Where is Lyttelton, exactly?
BY KEES CHALMERS
It appears Government
bureaucrats in Wellington
need a geography lesson.
Housing Minister Chris
Bishop announced three
weeks ago more than 65 new
affordable homes will be
delivered in Canterbury by
community housing providers,
including in Lyttelton.
National’s Banks Peninsula
MP Vanessa Weenink jumped
on the bandwagon, trumpeting
the plan on Facebook: “Great
news Banks Peninsula! More
state housing is on the
way.”
She said the houses
would be in Lyttelton,
Merivale, Somerfield
and Linwood.
But there was a
big problem with the
announcement: The
social housing is on Lyttelton
St, Somerfield
Vanessa
Weenink
– not in Lyttelton.
The social homes are at
Three Lanes Lyttelton St,
provided by Ōtautahi
Community Housing
Trust and are well
under way.
There are currently no
plans for social housing
in Lyttelton.
The gaffe was spotted
by former Banks Peninsula
MP, now list MP,
Tracey McLellan who
The Government said
social housing was planned
for Lyttelton, instead of
Lyttleton St, Somerfield,
the location of Ōtautahi
Community Housing
Trust’s community housing
development (above).
wasted no time attacking the
Government.
Said McLellan on Facebook:
“Just in case you were excited
about social homes coming to
Lyttelton . . . turns out, there
aren’t any.”
McLellan was skeptical
of the announcement
and submitted written
parliamentary questions to
get more detail about the
supposed Lyttelton homes.
Heritage
park cuts
staff to
lower
costs
BY KEES CHALMERS
Two Ferrymead Heritage Park
workers have had their fulltime
employment cut to casual
contracts to reduce costs.
It comes after a bid for
$320,000 from the city council’s
strengthening communities
fund failed, leaving the park in
financial trouble.
Park general manager Ian
France said the park had
received $1.5 million from the
strengthening communities
fund over the past 10 years.
“We were disappointed,
a bit surprised as well,” he
said about missing out this
year.
It was on the back of missing
out in June on $700,000 to $1.2m
a year for the next three years
as part of the city council’s
Annual Plan.
The two full-time staff were
from the maintenance and
education departments. One
has since decided to leave
the park and take up another
opportunity.
Auction nets $80k for school
BY KEES CHALMERS
The Peninsula Art Auction
raised more than $80,000 over
the weekend with 120 artists
from around the harbour
donating pieces to the cause.
The auction is held once
every two years to raise money
for Lyttelton Primary School.
Since it was first held in
2005, it has raised more than
$500,000, including $70,000 in
2023.
The art was on show at
the school on Saturday and
Sunday. The auction gala on
Sunday night was sold out.
Two pieces by the late
Lyttelton artist Bill Hammond
went for $9000 and $8500.
Said event organiser Taff
Givlray: "It was awesome,
obviously our hearts were
filled.
"That’s what we do it for,
community spirit, creativity
and the kids.”
Givlray said the auction
gained attention after the
event’s advertising banners
were stolen and vandalised
last month.
A large banner was taken
from Norwich Quay on
October 5. A replacement was
put up and then vandalised a
week later.
Police appealed for
information about a woman
seen on CCTV footage at
Norwich Quay. The woman
came forward to police and
assisted with their inquiries.
The original sign was
Sarah Pauli and Kerstin Ghizel hold up the second untitled piece by late Lyttelton artist Bill Hammond which was auctioned
off by Joe Bennett for $9000 on Sunday night.
PHOTOS: CHLOE LANGLEY PHOTOGRAPHY
handed back to organisers.
No charges have been laid
after the incidents.
Gilvray was stunned by
the community support,
which included offers of free
advertising. Lyttelton Scout
members also braved the rain
to fix the damaged banner.
Sheep used to combat
Port Hills fire risk
Sheep grazing is being trialled
as a way to reduce fire risk
on the Port Hills. The popular
Kennedy’s Bush track was
closed on Sunday for three
days to allow sheep to graze
the dry grass. City council
head of parks Rupert Bool said
residents suggested the idea,
believing sheep could create
more effective firebreaks than
mechanical mowing.
Lyttelton pair triumph
at music awards
Marlon Williams won the ARPA
Silver Scroll Award for his
song Aua Atu Ra, co-written by
fellow Lyttelton artist KOMMI
(Te Pononga Tamati-Elliffe).
It was Williams’ second Silver
Scroll Award after he won it
in 2018 for Nobody Gets What
They Want Anymore. The award
adds him to the exclusive list of
multi-winners, which includes
Lorde, Dave Dobbyn and Don
McGlashan.
‘It was a simple
screw-up’ – Bishop
› From Page 1
She told Bay Harbour News
the reply she received said
the Ministry of Housing and
Urban Development incorrectly
advised Bishop’s office that new
social housing was planned for
Lyttelton.
“I think when
you are crowing
about a very
small number of
social houses, not
nearly as much as
any government
could be investing
in, the least you
can do is know
where they are,”
said McLellan.
Tracey
McLellan
“They’re not serious about
providing social housing if
they’re not really across the
detail about where those houses
are needed.”
Weenink said the ministry
forgot to add ‘St’ on the end of
Lyttelton.
“It was a simple mistake, easy
to make in a document,” she
said.
“The new social houses in
Lyttelton was news to me too,
I’m glad it was cleared up and
apologise there was confusion
caused.”
The press release and
Weenink’s post has since been
updated but no official apology
for the error had been made by
the Government or Weenink as
of noon yesterday.
McLellan said
the Government
would not have
known an error
had been made
if she had not
inquired about
the housing.
“People hear
the original Chris Bishop
announcement,
but they don't then go back onto
the beehive website to check if
any updates have been made,”
she said.
“There will be people assuming
that there's going to be
some social housing provided in
Lyttelton, which is an area that
could do with some investment.
Said Bishop: “It was a simple
screw up by the department.
People make mistakes.
Despite the media demanding
perfection, not everyone can
achieve it.”
Park’s Halloween
night a big success
› From Page 1
The park now has five fulltime
staff. It is not looking to
cut more jobs, general manager
Ian France said.
Instead, it is exploring general
cost-cutting measures, and
potential income streams like
corporate sponsorship and
grants.
Admission prices increased
by $5 in September. Adults now
pay $20; children between 5-15,
$15.
The park is looking to hire
two or three more staff on
casual contracts and has advertised
for more volunteers
through the Volunteering Canterbury
website to help with the
park’s operations.
It has had six new volunteers
join the park already.
The park is also looking to
bring in external directors for
both the trust board and the
company, after resignations
from two company directors
and a trustee over the past year.
It is also putting together
a case for funding to be considered
in the city council’s
2026-27 Annual Plan.
France expects its requested
amount to be considerably less
than what it applied for this
year.
Ferrymead Heritage Park is not looking to cut more jobs, general manager Ian
France said, rather it will focus on alternate funding streams. The park raised
$24,000 from its Halloween night on Friday – its biggest event in two years.
The funding would be used
for long overdue infrastructure
repairs and introducing
new exhibits to the park,
which they have not had
the means to do.
“It’s about how do you
enhance the visitor experience,”
said France.
Going forward, the
park is focusing on its
upcoming events, including
the Nostalgia event in
February and the 175th
Canterbury anniversary over
Ian France
December 13 and 14.
The park hosted its annual
Halloween event on
Friday and was a roaring
success, raising $24,000.
France said it was the
park’s biggest event in
two years.
Accompanied by
its night market on
Saturday, France
estimated about 2000
people walked through
the doors over the
weekend.
NEWS Bay Harbour News, November 6, 2025 | 5
Dogs banned from Estuary under bylaw
Dogs are now banned from the
Estuary, including at the beach
around Southshore Spit Reserve
and near Shag Rock, as well as
parts of Styx Mill Conservation
Reserve.
The rule changes came into
effect on Monday for Banks
Peninsula and Christchurch
dog owners, as part of the city
council’s updated dog bylaw
and policy.
New rules have also been
set for the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor and for Te Kuru
Wetlands in Halswell.
The rules aim to balance
wildlife protection and
recreational access in these
developing areas, city council
animal management manager
Lionel Bridger said.
“Some areas across the
district are vital habitats
where birds roost, rest, breed
and/or feed, and dogs pose a
significant threat to them. This
is the case in estuary, wetland
and riverbank environments,
especially for ground-nesting
birds.
“We’ve listened to community
feedback that wildlife in these
areas need protection from
dogs – a lot of dog owners
shared that sentiment.”
The city council dog bylaw
and policy was reviewed during
2024 and 2025. It included public
consultation.
As a result some rules are
new, some haved stayed the
same, others changed and
others have been relaxed,
Bridger said.
The city council’s updated dog bylaw and policy came into effect on Monday. Dogs are now prohibited from the Estuary, including at the beach near Shag Rock.
PHOTOS: RNZ, GETTY
Dogs must now be leashed on
paths in green spaces such as
parks. There is also a limit on
the number of dogs a person
can walk together in a public
space – four dogs, with only two
off leash at a time in off-leash
areas, including dog parks.
“We’re working on an
exemption process for people
who have the skills required to
exercise multiple dogs safely,
and will have that ready in May
2026,” Bridger said.
He said the city has changed a
lot over the past 10 years.
“We have more focus on
habitat restoration and wildlife
protection, and there are many
more paths and other areas
that are shared between people
walking, biking, scooting and
so on. We also have more dogs
than ever before.
“The rules have been
tightened in some places to
keep people, wildlife, stock, the
environment and dogs safe.”
In some parts of the
country, dogs must be leashed
everywhere, except in specified
off-leash areas. Bridger said the
city council did not want to take
this approach.
“We’d rather that restrictions
are in place only where necessary,
so that there are lots of
opportunities for dogs to be
exercised both on and off-leash.
He said Christchurch has
Updated
map shows
most at risk
areas
A map showing which parts of
the city could be hit hardest in
a major flooding event has been
updated to include new modelling
data.
The city council has mapped
the latest data for flood events
predicted to happen on average
once every 10, 50, and 200 years.
Said head of three waters
Gavin Hutchison: “Anyone
making decisions about a property
or about flood readiness
for their home or business
can search the map and see
whether the land may be
affected by a specific predicted
flood event.
“Similarly, people who are
building or undertaking major
renovations can check the calculated
minimum floor level
they may need to protect their
house from floodwater. Where
this isn’t yet available on the
map, we can calculate it if people
contact us.”
The flood map provides separate
computer models for the
different urban river catchments
– the Avon, Heathcote,
Styx, and Halswell rivers – as
well as for the Sumner coastal
catchment.
Students tackle flooding issue
BY KEES CHALMERS
Two 18-year-old students
have come with a plan to help
keep Sumner’s streets clean in
instances of flooding – but it
may not be implemented.
Joel Barrie and Jasper King-
Smith proposed building a rain
garden outside the Sumner
Redcliffs Anglican Church on
Nayland St, with the church’s
support.
“A rain garden is a simple,
sustainable design that uses
plants, soil and natural filtration
to slow down and clean
stormwater before it enters the
drains,” said Barrie.
The year 13 Shirley Boys High
School were tasked with a class
project to influence a policy
change by carrying out social
actions to address an issue in
their community.
Barrie lives in Sumner and he
has seen firsthand the impact
flooding has on the community’s
daily activities and the
coastline’s health.
“With Sumner’s exposure
to rising sea levels and more
intense rainfall events, the issue
is likely to worsen unless a sustainable
solution is introduced
soon,” he said.
The pair submitted the rain
garden proposal to former
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton.
Head of council’s three waters
Gavin Hutchinson said the
proposal was added to the city
council’s considerations for
Sumner’s coastal adaptation
Joel Barrie and Jasper King-Smith have designed a rain garden to help combat flooding on Nayland St, Sumner.
planning, but more work was
needed to look at options and
benefits as part of the programme
planning.
“At this stage, we do not have
an undertaking to build this
rain garden,” he said.
Said Barrie: “We believe
prompt action is needed.
Flooding continues to affect
residents and public spaces on
Nayland St, and our proposal
offers a sustainable way to start
addressing the issue now rather
than waiting for large-scale
infrastructure upgrades.”
He said in rainfall events, the
stormwater accumulates along
Nayland St, particularly around
the church.
The students looked at
surveys and mapping and
interviewed residents, community
leaders and city council
staff as part of their project.
They discovered the main
issues were the limited capacity
of the existing stormwater
infrastructure and lack of green
space to absorb run off.
They then developed the plan
for the rain garden.
“It uses natural processes
to slow and clean stormwater
before it reaches the drains.
It’s also something that can be
built on a small scale but still
make a visible impact,” said
King-Smith.
“We liked that it’s sustainable,
relatively low-cost, and
community-friendly, and that it
improves flooding, water quality
and the look of the street.”
The design includes native
plants suited to coastal conditions,
helping attract
biodiversity.
“Small, local actions can
inspire change and show others
what’s possible when people
care about their surroundings,”
said Barrie.
He plans to study a Bachelor
of Social and Environmental
Sustainability at Canterbury
University next year.
King-Smith is taking a gap
year to travel in Asia, despite
receiving a scholarship to Otago
University.
However, tertiary education
in the environmental and land
management sector is still
something he wants to pursue
in the future.
Pilbara
by Judy Nunn
A stunning tale of loyalty and survival from Australia’s No.1 bestselling author of Black
Sheep and Khaki Town
In this ancient, harsh place, faint hearts will not last.
The Pilbara, late 1800s: Frontier country, the wild west of Australia – a lawless, violent
place where treachery is a way of life.
Widower Charles Burton arrives in this forbidding corner of the world with his three young
children. They’ve travelled half the globe, from the lush, rolling hills and dales of Yorkshire,
on a mission to save their family’s sheep and cattle property. Rebuilding the fortunes of
Burton Station will ask everything of Charles and his children, particularly his daughter,
Victoria, who will at times threaten to bring about their downfall.
Here in the oldest landscape on earth, survival has always proved a battle. And when
greed takes over, the battle only intensifies. Aboriginal people are robbed of their lands
and their very way of life as every new arrival fights for the riches on offer – the grazing
territory, the pearls and the gold. Amid all this brutality, the Burtons and their allies must
fight to conquer the savagery that surrounds them.
From Yorkshire to Cossack in Western Australia, and London to Tahiti in French Polynesia,
Pilbara is the tale of a family on a mission to restore the honour of its name.
What do Chch’s luxury homes sell for?
High-profile property developer
Richard Peebles says his
Fendalton mansion, Brenchley,
year at more than $10 million.
look at the other highest-price
Christchurch homes sold in 2025
Richard Peebles has poured
millions into restoring the St
Barnabas Ln heritage building.
If the sale ends up higher than
$10m, it would far surpass other
luxury homes sold this year.
The average house price
in Christchurch is $752,357,
significantly below the national
average of $881,508.
The following list only includes
homes publicly listed as sold on
Heazlewood could not reveal
the exact price of this sleek,
upmarket home but suspects it is
the highest sale in Christchurch
this year.
He said the August 11 sale was
“considerably above” the capital
“It is simply one of
Christchurch’s best homes. It
warranted the result.”
Tyro sets sights on world tour
BY KEES CHALMERS
Jack Tyro has been riding a
surfboard longer than he can
remember.
His father Steve first put him
on a longboard when he was
two. He pushed Tyro onto his
first wave and he cried then fell
off and went under.
Now 19 and a three-time
national longboard champion,
surfing did not always come
naturally for Tyro (right).
Steve was a handy surfer,
competing at national championships
and on the former
professional Hyundai Longboard
Tour series.
The sport is a family affair.
Tyro’s mum Jen met Steve
at a surf competition. Tyro’s
younger brother Sam, 16, also
surfs.
Tyro was born in Sumner
but moved to Raglan when he
was 4. Steve worked on wind
turbines there and Jen was a
teacher.
Steve was told if he wanted
to continue working on the
turbines, he would have to relocate
to Wellington. The family
did not want to move there so
they shifted back to Sumner
instead when Tyro was 8.
Tyro would go surfing with
his mates while he lived in Raglan.
The Waikato town is world
famous for its left-hand breaks
at Manu Bay, Whale Bay and
Indicators.
The waves in Sumner are not
as big as Raglan, but the small
swells can give surfers a competitive
edge if the ocean is flat
during competitions, Tyro said.
When he moved to Sumner
Tyro started surfing almost
daily. “I remember having fun,
I remember being scared, being
pushed, finding mates and
experiences.
"There was definitely some
days where I didn't want to go
out because it was massive,
but I did anyway and I learned
from it.”
Tyro remembers tagging
along with his father to surf
competitions, where he would
watch the talented riders and
try to implement their styles
into his own.
He describes his style as traditional
and reminiscent of
surfers from the 1960s and 70s.
He takes each wave as it comes
rather than having a calculated
plan.
Tyro does not have any well
known surfing idols, but gets
his inspiration from friends in
Sumner.
“I honestly look up to anyone
I surf with,” he said.
He started entering competitions
when he was 10. Despite
finishing near the bottom a few
times, he enjoyed pushing himself
to his limits.
"I'm almost screaming when
I'm doing turns. I’ve got this
really angry face so I liked the
fact that I could put everything
into something,” he said.
He trained hard and
improved quickly. By 13 he
had won the under-14 National
Scholastic Surfing Championships,
his first New Zealand
title.
"I almost thought I was going
end up with my dad and come
second all my life,” he said.
“It was definitely a cool feeling,
like, I have a shot.”
He won the open men’s
national title at 15, establishing
himself as one of the country’s
top up and coming surfers. He
has claimed two more open
men’s titles since then.
After surfing in Australia
for four months last summer
Tyro is back home in Sumner.
But he plans to go to Noosa on
Queensland’s Sunshine Coast
in December for two months in
preparation for the Noosa Festival
of Surfing in March.
Last summer, he finished
tied for ninth at the WSL Bells
Beach Longboard Classic in
Victoria, Australia. He entered
as a wildcard after one of the
surfers was unable to compete
and went toe to toe with current
world No 1 Kai Ellice-Flint
from Australia. He narrowly
lost to Ellice-Flint by a score of
12.17 to 12.10. It was his second
time competing in a World Surf
League event.
He set a goal last year to win
a permanent position on the
world tour. But unfortunately
Tyro finished third in the Oceania
qualifying series in March,
one place away from claiming a
spot on the tour.
He said failure comes with
the territory and results are
often dictated by what waves
come your way.
"If it's meant to be, it's meant
to be, and the ocean kind of
decides that.”
PHOTO: KEES CHALMERS
He puts pressure on himself
to train hard so when he competes
he knows there is nothing
else he could have done, regardless
of the result.
It was his third attempt at
qualifying for the world tour
and he improved on his previous
finishes of 10th and ninth.
His goal for next year is to
finish in the top two at the
Noosa Festival of Surfing and
claim a permanent spot on the
tour. He feels better placed to
qualify with the result at Bells
Beach behind him.
He also plans to move to
Dunedin next semester to start
a diploma in construction at
Otago Polytechnic.
He will study part time to
accommodate his surfing
adventures.
He expects it will take two
Jack Tyro riding a 2.5m wave at the Bells Beach Longboard Classic in Victoria.
PHOTO: WORLD SURF LEAGUE/ED SLOANE
and a half years to get his
diploma.
"I like being where I need to
be for what I want to do,” he
said.
He spent four months Noosa
last summer and found the
experience had a profound
effect on his surfing.
“Watching people who knew
what they were doing, it helped
a lot,” he said.
He started using his arms
more to balance on the board.
Tyro has also focussed on
working in the gym to try and
put on weight.
"The boards are kind of massive,
so having a bit of weight to
throw them around is definitely
a big pro.”
Tyro aspires to be a world
champion.
“My intention isn't to beat the
other person or win the heat,
my intention is to do the best I
possibly can,” he said.
"The best I possibly can
in terms of contest is literally
world champion, so that's
where I want to take it.”
Tyro competed at the ISA
World Longboard Championship
for the second time in April
and finished 19th.
He has already qualified for
next year’s championship in
El Salvador, which will cost
him $7000. He is waiting for
the competition dates to be
announced to see if they line up
with a break from his studies.
The competition is not a priority
at this stage, but would be
a step toward qualifying for the
2032 Olympics Games in Brisbane
if surfing is included.
The financial pressure of
entering and travelling to competitions
is stressful
“I'm saving as much as I can,
I'm frugal as,” he said.
Two weeks ago in Sumner
Tyro competed in the fifth edition
of an event he co-founded
– The Tuawera Longboard
Classic. He took out the open
men’s title. He started the classic
when he was 14 with fellow
Sumner surfers Will Jamieson
and Charlie Wise.
"We were just surfing with
each other almost every day
and dad was like why don't you
guys make a surf comp? We
were like, okay, we'll do that,”
Tyro said.
It has grown into a significant
event with more than 70
competitors this year.
Dutchman flying high at Heathcote
BY KEES CHALMERS
Philippe Boissevain has well
and truly experienced the highs
and lows of cricket.
From being on the receiving
end of the highest one day
international total in history
to scoring a six fuelled maiden
century for Heathcote last
Saturday.
The leg spinner announced
himself as a batter scoring
107 not out from 64 balls to
put Heathcote in a dominant
position heading into the
second day of their two day
premier metro match against St
Albans.
Heathcote was sent in to bat
first and scored 305/7 off 60
overs, while St Albans ended
the day on 145/7.
Boissevain started his innings
off slow with nine runs from
19 balls, finding the soft pitch
tough to bat on with 18 overs
left in their innings. Then he
made a tactical change.
"Instead of trying to see how
many singles I could get, I was
just waiting for balls in my area
and trusting myself to hit them
for six which came off pretty
well,” he said.
He went on to hit 10 sixes off
St Albans’ bowlers.
Boissevain took a particular
liking to the short boundaries
down the ground and at cow
corner on Heathcote Domain.
Boissevain said he felt as if he
could predict where the bowler
was going to bowl before the
ball left his hand.
As he was approaching three
figures, the thought of a century
was not on his mind as he was
trying to close out the innings
with a bang.
"I’ve had multiple times
where I lay in bed and think,
s***, it must be so awesome to
score a century,” he said.
"At the end of the day it's
just another run you score, it
doesn't really feel a whole lot
different than all the other
shots I've been hitting. It was a
bit of a weird experience.”
On 97 with five balls left in
the innings, St Albans’ Jack Dry
bowled a full delivery which
Boissevain hit to square leg for
four to bring up his century.
But Boissevain knows all
too well what it is like to be on
the receiving end of a batting
onslaught.
He has played six one day and
eight T20 internationals for the
Netherlands.
During his last game in 2022,
the Dutch side conceded 498 in
50 overs to England, the highest
one day international total ever
Philippe Boissevain at home studying for his environmental science degree.
Left – Boissevain bowling for the Netherlands in a T20 friendly match against
County Cricket side Glamorgan in Cardiff, Wales.
made. Boissevain conceded 108
runs for no wickets off 10 overs,
the sixth most expensive spell
in a one day international. His
last over went for 32.
“A bit of a bitter pill to
swallow, but looking back I
would not have missed it for
anything in the world,” he said.
Boissevain said England allrounder
Moeen Ali put his arm
around him after the game.
"He was like, don’t worry,
this is only going to bring you
forward in your career.”
About five years ago he called
his good mate, Black Cap Ish
Sodhi, for career advice.
He told him to spend a
season playing club cricket in
Christchurch. Boissevain sent
emails to all the different clubs
and received a reply from
Heathcote.
The current season is his
fourth season at the club.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
"I never look back with any
regrets because I really enjoy
the environment at Heathcote,
the family-feeling we’ve created
away from my actual family in
the mainland, it’s a cool thing to
have,” he said.
He played for Canterbury
A last season and has been
training with the Canterbury
side alongside fellow leg
spinners Sodhi and Michael
Rippon.
"You learn how to bowl to
the best in the world basically,
if you slightly miss your line
and length, they’ll let you know
and I think it makes you more
disciplined,” he said.
Playing for Canterbury is
firmly in his sights. Outside
of cricket, Boissevain studies
environmental science online
with the Open University of the
Netherlands, which is based in
Amsterdam.
Family’s farm legacy draws to a close
BY KEES CHALMERS
It is the end of an era for the
Shields family, who have lived
on a Heathcote Valley tomato
farm for more than 100 years.
Ted Shields, 90, and his wife
Dawn, 87, are selling their
property, leaving behind the
rural lifestyle for a retirement
village.
Ted said the decision to leave
the place he has called home
for most of his life was very
difficult.
With Dawn a few years
younger, he did not want to
leave her with the task of
maintaining the property after
he isgone.
“I’m very much attached to
this property, but in the interest
of what’s going to happen over
the next few years, we thought
we should move on,” he said.
Ted’s father, Cecil ‘Cis’ Shields
bought the 6-acre (2.4ha) block
of land in 1922, after serving as
a machine gunner in Egypt
during World War 1.
The property initially comprised
of 500 fruit trees and 24,000
outdoor tomato plants.
Following World War 2, an
influx of residents into the
Heathcote Valley drove the
demand for fresh produce. The
work involved intense manual
labour – and even then, the
success of a crop often relied on
luck with the climate.
The property has been subdivided
over the years, with Ted now
owning a 0.8ha block.
Ted grew up on the farm with
Ted Shields is selling his Horotane Valley Rd property in the Heathcote Valley, which has been in his family for more
than a century. Top right - Ted with his father Cecil ‘Cis’ Shields, who bought the property in 1922. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
his father, his mother Thelma
and sister Brenda.
He recalled roaming the hills,
shooting rabbits and building
huts as a kid. Back then, Port
Hills Rd seldom had any traffic,
so he and his friends from Heathcote
Valley School would attach sails
to their carts built from wooden
apple cases and pram wheels
and ride them down the road.
The sound of silence filled the
valley, interrupted only by the St
Mark’s Church bells in Opawa on
Sundays and chains rattling as
the horses further up the valley
turned to plough in the opposite
direction.
Ted has spent all of his life on
the farm, apart from two years
boarding at Waitaki Boys’ High
School, and another two living
just around the corner.
He recalled receiving 127
strokes at Waitaki Boys’ for
“typical schoolboy stuff”.
He remembered the number
because the schoolboys used to
carve a small v-shaped notch
in their leather belt for every
stroke they received.
“I held the record for many
years,” he said.
After leaving school, Ted worked
at home before doing a carpentry
apprenticeship.
At 21, he started his own
company, building residential
properties in Christchurch and
North Canterbury.
He and Dawn got married
when he was 24 and built a
house on Port Hills Rd.
They lived there for two years
before moving back onto the
family farm, building a house of
their own on the property – and
have not left it since.
Ted went into semi-retirement
at 60 and grew tomatoes
commercially, until the fruit
started being imported from
Australia.
“This valley was full of tomato
plants and orchards, but when
they started bringing them in
from Aussie, it killed the whole
valley,” he said.
The property is no longer farmed
commercially.
The family legacy living on
through Ted and Dawn’s children
was not something that was ever
considered, with all three moving
away from Christchurch.
“This is the way life goes, your
kids take a different career and
that’s it,” Ted said.
He is going to miss the day-to-day
maintenance of the property and
is unsure as to how he will fill
the time.
“We’ll find something,” he said.
The property was listed on the
market on Tuesday with Lynton
Hubber and Jo Hoogervorst of
Harcourts Grenadier Ferrymead
and has a rateable value of
$1.45 million.
MOTORING Bay Harbour News, November 6, 2025 | 13
Evolution not
revolution for
Škoda’s Superb
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 8, Build Quality 8, Comfort 8, Passenger and Load Space 9,
Value for money 7, Fuel Economy – On road test average, 8.9L/100km, Safety, ANCAP crash rating, Five star
Price: $77,300
Overall points out of 10: 8
One of the more interesting
recent arrivals is the fourthgeneration
Škoda Superb
wagon, which takes an
evolutionary rather than
revolutionary path, building on
the strengths of its acclaimed
predecessor — no small feat
given the high bar it set.
The only area where there’s
less is in the range itself, now
trimmed to just two models.
The entry-level variant tested
here starts at $77,300, with a
$9k step up to the Sport Line.
While significantly more
expensive than its predecessor,
this latest Superb now competes
in a price bracket alongside
several well-priced rivals.
Still, as one of the few
genuine large wagons left in the
market, Škoda believes it can
command a premium.
Slightly larger in every
dimension than its predecessor,
the new Superb faces its rivals
with a smartly evolved design
and a suite of new technologies.
A modern powertrain and
improved aerodynamics make
it more efficient, while the
clean, spacious interior makes
greater use of sustainable
materials.
In fourth-generation trim,
the Superb features features
a distinctive octagonal grille
and sharply drawn LED Matrix
headlights that deliver more
light than before.
This is also the most
aerodynamic Superb ever,
gliding through the air with
minimal wind noise at highway
speeds.
A 195kw 2.0 litre turbo petrol
motor seems potent enough
on paper, although being a
reasonably hefty wagon its size
and weight seemed to be a bit of
an anchor on the test vehicles
performance.
Power comes from a 195kW
2.0-litre turbo petrol engine
– potent on paper, though the
wagon’s size and weight slightly
blunt its performance.
Still, it offers an appealing
mix of smoothness and
refinement, sprinting from
0-100km/h in around 6.5
seconds.
Acceleration feels purposeful
across the rev range, ideal for
tackling New Zealand’s varied
roads. With 350Nm of torque
available between 2000 and
5400rpm, and a seven-speed
DSG automatic that shifts with
precision, the powertrain feels
well-matched.
The Superb has grown by
40mm in length and gained 30
litres of luggage space, making
it a superb load hauler with an
expansive, modern cabin.
A freestanding central
infotainment display
incorporates the vehicle’s
navigation system and other
controls.
For the first time, Škoda has
fitted new nano radar sensors
in the Superb’s front corners to
enhance systems such as front
assist and crossroad assist,
which detect crossing traffic,
cyclists, and pedestrians,
braking automatically if
needed.
A new multifunction camera
provides a wider field of
vision, enabling features like
predictive cyclist protection
and turn-assist braking.
Other systems include
exit warning, which alerts
occupants to approaching
traffic before opening a door,
and swerve support, which
helps steer around obstacles if
the driver’s reaction is too slow.
Adaptive lane assist now
works on unmarked rural
roads, while adaptive cruise
control uses navigation data
to anticipate bends and
intersections.
Attention and drowsiness
assist monitors driver
behaviour, assesses their risk of
fatigue and triggers visual and
acoustic warnings when these
go beyond a pre-determined
threshold.
It uses an innovative
algorithm to recognise shortterm
inattention (distraction)
and long-term inattention
(fatigue).
It detects deviations from
normal steering expectations
at speeds above 65km/h and
continuously evaluates the
driver’s alertness in order to
draw conclusions about their
fitness to drive.
If the driver fails to respond,
emergency assist tightens
seatbelts, applies brief braking
jolts, activates hazard lights,
and safely slows the car to a
stop.
Ride quality is reasonably
compliant even over badly
worn and poorly cambered
road surfaces.
Handling is nimble for such
a large wagon, effectively
managing power delivery
across a range of conditions.
Body roll is well contained
in corners, and the steering is
crisp, responsive, and perfectly
weighted – giving the Superb a
level of poise and composure
that lives up to its name.
Positioned on sought-after Beachville Road, this apartment designed by Dalman
Architecture and completed in 2018 offers the ultimate in modern, lock-and-leave
living. Beautifully maintained and thoughtfully designed, it delivers both comfort and
convenience in equal measure.
Expansive floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows frame the ever-changing outlooks, filling
the home with natural light and creating a seamless connection to the outdoors. The
generous lounge extends out to a spacious, westerly-facing deck - perfect for relaxing or
entertaining - while a built-in entertainment unit enhances functionality and style. The
modern kitchen and dining area feature a neutral palette and quality finishes, ideal for
those who love to cook or entertain. A walk-in pantry adds everyday practicality and extra
storage. This is a warm and inviting home with double glazing, extensive insulation and a
heat pump. Two double bedrooms provide restful retreats, each with excellent storage.
The primary suite enjoys direct access to the large deck, patio, and landscaped garden
- your own sunny and secure haven. Constructed in a striking blend of Cedar and steel,
the home’s contemporary exterior complements its coastal setting. Additional highlights
include two toilets, a single garage and off-street parking.
