Dogs are now banned from the
Estuary, including at the beach
around Southshore Spit Reserve
and near Shag Rock, as well as
parts of Styx Mill Conservation
Reserve.
The rule changes came into
effect on Monday, as part of
the city council’s updated dog
bylaw and policy.
New rules have also been
set for the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor and for Te Kuru
Wetlands in Halswell.
The rules aim to balance
wildlife protection and
recreational access in these
developing areas, city council
animal management manager
Lionel Bridger said.
“Some The Star, areas January across 23, 2025 the
district are vital habitats
where birds roost, rest, breed
and/or feed, and dogs pose a
significant threat to them. This
is the case in estuary, wetland
and riverbank environments,
especially for ground-nesting
birds. The Star, January 23, 2025
“We’ve listened to community
feedback that wildlife in these
areas need protection from
dogs – a lot of dog owners
shared that sentiment.”
The city council dog bylaw
and policy was reviewed during
2024 The and Star, 2025. January It included 23, 2025 public
consultation.
The city council’s updated dog bylaw and policy came into effect on Monday. Dogs are now prohibited from the Estuary and parts of Styx Mill Conservation Reserve.
PHOTOS: RNZ, GETTY
As a result some rules are
new, some haved stayed the
same, others changed and
others have been relaxed,
Bridger said.
Dogs must now be leashed on
paths in green spaces such as
parks. There is also a limit on
the number of dogs a person
can walk together in a public
space – four dogs, with only two
off leash at a time in off-leash
areas, including dog parks.
“We’re working on an
exemption process for people
who have the skills required to
exercise multiple dogs safely,
and will have that ready in May
2026,” Bridger said.
He said Christchurch has
changed a lot over the past 10
years.
“We have more focus on
habitat restoration and wildlife
protection, and there are many
more paths and other areas
that are shared between people
walking, biking, scooting and
so on. We also have more dogs
than ever before.
“The rules have been
tightened in some places to
keep people, wildlife, stock, the
environment and dogs safe.”
He said the city has about
45,000 dogs registered to about
39,000 owners.
“Per capita, that’s about one
dog for every nine people.
“That is why we rely on people
knowing the rules and doing the
right thing,” Bridger said.
An email outlining the rules
has been sent to registered dog
owners and information on
the city council’s website was
updated on Monday. starnews.co.nz
The city council is required by
law to update its dog bylaw and
policy at least every 10 years,
meaning it is likely the rules
in place now will remain until
about 2035.
Exploring Antarctica
from the classroom
Students have been exploring
Antarctica’s rich history as they
test out a new virtual Minecraft
world.
The project was launched
on Monday as part of the
Antarctic Heritage Trust’s
inspiring explorers education
programme. Minecraft is a
virtual sandbox game that
allows players to build and
explore immersive 3D worlds
using digital blocks. It is a
powerful tool for education
which is increasingly used in
classrooms across the globe.
The Shirley Intermediate and
St Andrew's College students
have been exploring Captain
Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery
Hut, the first expedition base
built on Antarctica’s Ross
Shirley
Intermediate
students Quorra,
– Captain Robert
Falcon Scott’s
Discovery Hut.
Island more than 121 years ago.
To create the Antarctic
world, the trust partnered
with WDekkers Digital and
12 students from Shirley
Intermediate who helped build
the initial version of the hut.
Designed as a collaborative
classroom activity, the
students’ journey started
aboard Scott’s ship, RRS
Discovery, before going ashore
to meet early explorers and
learn about life on the ice. St
Andrew's College students
tested the Minecraft world in
small collaborative groups.
Shirley Intermediate
students were then the first to
explore the finished Minecraft
world when it was officially
launched.
Football-focused
study a winner for
academy students
A unique education programme
based around football is about
to end its first year. Bella
Dowling reports
“It’s not about what the teachers
want, it’s about what the
students are asking for.”
That is the guiding philosophy
behind the one-of-a-kind
football institute, where Ao
Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery
school students combine academic
learning with a passion
for football.
The football-focused programme,
launched earlier
this year in partnership with
Christchurch United FC, allows
students to earn NCEA levels 1,
2 and 3 through English, PE and
tailored football training.
All of the students transferred
from other schools specifically to
join the institute – including one
who moved alone from Invercargill
to take part.
Football is not the only specialised
pathway offered at Ao
Tawhiti. The Prosillo Dance
Academy provides students with
a route into professional dance,
while other specialist options
include the digital media special
programme and the senior
college of philosophy – each
designed around students’ interests
and aspirations.
While the school follows the
official New Zealand curriculum,
every student’s plan is individually
tailored to meet their
learning needs.
Football Institute learning
advisor Steve Hunt said studentdriven
learning was at the heart
of the programme’s success.
“So to sustainably grow and
get the best out of (the football
institute), we need to co-construct
plans with the students for
what they want to achieve.
“And we’ve had really high
levels of success with a lot of
students getting ‘excellence’
grades at NCEA achievement
standards.”
Students spend three days a
week training and studying at
the Christchurch United sports
centre, and two days in class at
the school.
Hunt said the balance allowed
them to meet NCEA requirements
while pursuing their
sporting ambitions.
Looking ahead, the school
is considering expanding the
Ao Tawhiti football academy students spend three days a week at the Christchurch United sports centre and then attend
school for the rest of the week.
PHOTO: CHRISTCHURCH UNITED
programme to
include years 7-10.
“And then we
are hoping to get a
full 11-a-side team
running next year
that would have
the boys competing
within the
Mainland secondary
school
Ian Hayes
competition,” said Ao Tawhiti
senior leader Ian Hayes.
“The school, the club, and the
students themselves are saying,
this would be the next cool
progression.”
Hunt said
students were
initially wary
of taking on too
much but had
grown confident
in balancing their
commitments.
“Although the
students were Sam Sheppard
cautious about
overloading themselves at the
beginning, they can now see that
they can make it happen.”
Year 12 student Sam Sheppard
said introducing a first XI team
would give players something
tangible to work toward.
“It will give us something to
train for, something that will
drive us as players.”
Hayes said plans were already
forming for what might come
next.
“And then after that, what can
we do? Getting the boys out to do
internships at sporting facilities
around the city? Getting visiting
speakers in? Sports psychologists?
What can we start adding
to the package to make the boys
well-rounded footballers?”
Changes to the programme are
expected to happen next year.
‘I Want’ vs. ‘I Will’:
Desire and Responsibility in Real Estate
What’s wanted by everyone? Real estate has its
fair share of ‘I want’ moments: I want the best
agent, I want a sale, I want a listing, I want
this price, I want that school zone. The list is
long and getting longer with demands coming
from every stakeholder involved in the process
of buying and selling property.
Consultants who want a list of things to match their
goals or business plan, matched by owners who want
one very specific thing and that’s MORE!
This word is usually followed by others, most often
‘Money’ and ‘Care’.
It’s a simple enough request and it makes perfect sense,
but like all simple matters the devil is not just in the
detail but the tone and delivery.
Words I don’t hear enough of are:
I will. I will do what it takes. I will open the home for more
than 30 minutes once a week!!
I will work longer, harder and smarter, putting you – my
client – and your interests over my own.
I will keep in touch, not just in the dizzy, early days, but
way down the track when buyers start to feel rare and
difficult.
I will be transparent, reporting the good, the hard and
the painful to hear, not just the short and sanitised.
[As I write this, I’m reminded of a property we are
endeavouring to sell in another region. We haven’t
heard from our agent or their team in over three weeks,
so there are some strong ‘I want’ conversations coming!]
I will also market your home with intelligence and flair,
and if I do utilise AI, I will ensure the marketing content
still makes sense.
I will chase every lead and liaise with every agent (in our
own brand that means 500 consultants) who may have
someone with interest.
You see, I regard the ‘yes, I will do this’, as a commitment
that should comprise part of every realtor’s DNA.
Now some ‘I will’ commitments for the owners:
I will acknowledge your expertise and recommendations
on how to get the best result.
I will provide you with all the information you require
to satisfy a purchaser's due diligence. For example,
I will explain clearly to you that the insulation is not
throughout the whole house (even if I initially told you
that it was) or that the underfloor heating is limited to
the bathroom and kitchen.
I’ll also do my best to ensure my home is presented in
a manner that attracts and maintains the attention of
potential buyers.
As an owner selling, I will do all these things – and the
vast majority do this and more.
There are also some ‘I will’ statements for buyers:
If I make an appointment to view a property with you, I
will turn up, so you don’t have to drive for miles and/or
stand waiting for me at a home I’ve moved on from.
I will also let you know if there’s a chance that even after
saying I want a modern three-bedroom townhouse I
might buy a 100-year-old villa!
Yes, all these things happen – and frequently.
If these things can be achieved, I’ve got my own personal
‘I wants’ and ‘I wills’:
I want to remain an integral part of an industry I love and
have worked hard in and on for over three decades.
And I will do everything I can to sustain that whilst
balancing 50 balls in the air, trying not to fall over or be
hit by one.
Not easy.
