Cat on the Road to Findout by Yusuf/Cat Stevens
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the life, music and spiritual adventures
ofYusuf/Cat Stevens, one of the iconic figures of our time. This is more than a memoir
- it’s a profound exploration of identity, faith, and the universal search for meaning.
Cat Stevens was launched to fame in the swinging sixties, and his early career was
drastically interrupted by a mortal battle with TB - a turning point that ignited his
quest for peace and understanding. This unveils the untold chapters of his remarkable
journey, illustrated with dozens of drawings in Yusuf’s own hand. Self-penned with raw
honesty and poetic insight, he reflects on the challenges, controversies, and triumphs
that have defined his life, offering readers a rare glimpse into the soul of a man who
has lived multiple lives in one - finally shedding light on all those hidden ‘in-betweens’.
Mana by Tame Iti
In Mana, iconic Maori activist, artist, and performer Tame Iti shares his extraordinary
life, defined by resistance, resilience, and rangatiratanga. Lyrical, wise, and deeply
personal, Mana traces Tame’s journey from a Tuhoe child silenced from speaking
his native tongue to becoming a lifelong crusader for self-determination and an
outspoken champion of te reo Maori. From marching for land rights in the 1970s to
being imprisoned under controversial charges during the Tuhoe raids, Tame’s memoir
is a raw and powerful reflection on what it means to live with mana - dignity, integrity,
and authority - in a world that often seeks to strip it away. Woven throughout with
te reo Maori, humour and moments of unexpected tenderness, this is the korero of
a man who has never stopped challenging the status quo.
Exploring Antarctica
from the classroom
Students have been exploring
Antarctica’s rich history as they
test out a new virtual Minecraft
world.
The project was launched
on Monday as part of the
Antarctic Heritage Trust’s
inspiring explorers education
programme. Minecraft is a
virtual sandbox game that
allows players to build and
explore immersive 3D worlds
using digital blocks. It is a
powerful tool for education
which is increasingly used in
classrooms across the globe.
The Shirley Intermediate and
St Andrew's College students
have been exploring Captain
Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery
Hut, the first expedition base
built on Antarctica’s Ross
To create the Antarctic
world, the trust partnered
with WDekkers Digital and
12 students from Shirley
Intermediate who helped build
the initial version of the hut.
Designed as a collaborative
classroom activity, the
students’ journey started
aboard Scott’s ship, RRS
Discovery, before going ashore
to meet early explorers and
learn about life on the ice. St
Andrew's College students
tested the Minecraft world in
small collaborative groups.
Shirley Intermediate
students were then the first to
explore the finished Minecraft
world when it was officially
launched.
CHRISTMAS?
Here’s how we can get it done!
I’m not one to say “Now’s the
best time to sell!” — but I do
know that Christmas has a way
of creating its own deadline.
If you’ve got that end-of-year
goal in mind, here’s what the
next couple of months could
look like:
Now – mid-November
Request an appraisal, sign
paperwork, and organise a
building inspection if needed.
Show Weekend
(14–16 November)
Use the long weekend to get
everything market-ready —
gardening, decluttering, and
taking care of any maintenance
If selling by deadline:
Two weekends of open
If selling by auction:
Plan for three weekends of
December.
It’s amazing how quickly the
year disappears, so if you want
to be sold (or at least well
start lining things up.

Football-focused
study a winner for
academy students
A unique education programme
based around football is about
to end its first year. Bella
Dowling reports
“It’s not about what the teachers
want, it’s about what the
students are asking for.”
That is the guiding philosophy
behind the one-of-a-kind
football institute, where Ao
Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery
school students combine academic
learning with a passion
for football.
The football-focused programme,
launched earlier
this year in partnership with
Christchurch United FC, allows
students to earn NCEA levels 1,
2 and 3 through English, PE and
tailored football training.
All of the students transferred
from other schools specifically to
join the institute – including one
who moved alone from Invercargill
to take part.
Football is not the only specialised
pathway offered at Ao
Tawhiti. The Prosillo Dance
Academy provides students with
a route into professional dance,
while other specialist options
include the digital media special
programme and the senior
college of philosophy – each
designed around students’ interests
and aspirations.
While the school follows the
official New Zealand curriculum,
every student’s plan is individually
tailored to meet their
learning needs.
Football Institute learning
advisor Steve Hunt said studentdriven
learning was at the heart
of the programme’s success.
“So to sustainably grow and
get the best out of (the football
institute), we need to co-construct
plans with the students for
what they want to achieve.
“And we’ve had really high
levels of success with a lot of
students getting ‘excellence’
grades at NCEA achievement
standards.”
Students spend three days a
week training and studying at
the Christchurch United sports
centre, and two days in class at
the school.
Hunt said the balance allowed
them to meet NCEA requirements
while pursuing their
sporting ambitions.
Looking ahead, the school
is considering expanding the
Ao Tawhiti football academy students spend three days a week at the Christchurch United sports centre and then attend
school for the rest of the week.
programme to
include years 7-10.
“And then we
are hoping to get a
full 11-a-side team
running next year
that would have
the boys competing
within the
Mainland secondary
school
Ian Hayes
competition,” said Ao Tawhiti
senior leader Ian Hayes.
“The school, the club, and the
students themselves are saying,
this would be the next cool
progression.”
Hunt said
students were
initially wary
of taking on too
much but had
grown confident
in balancing their
commitments.
“Although the
students were Sam Sheppard
cautious about
overloading themselves at the
beginning, they can now see that
they can make it happen.”
Year 12 student Sam Sheppard
said introducing a first XI team
would give players something
tangible to work toward.
“It will give us something to
train for, something that will
drive us as players.”
Hayes said plans were already
forming for what might come
next.
“And then after that, what can
we do? Getting the boys out to do
internships at sporting facilities
around the city? Getting visiting
speakers in? Sports psychologists?
What can we start adding
to the package to make the boys
well-rounded footballers?”
Changes to the programme are
expected to happen next year.
The never-ending joy of roast lamb
From a hot roast one day to a
never-ending joy of cold cuts,
lamb is a versatile special treat,
writes Nigel Slater
I rarely roast a shoulder or leg
of lamb – they are expensive –
but like any roast, it feels like a
celebration. A special treat not
only to eat warm, but for the
meals that follow.

ROAST LAMB
Serves 5-6. Ready in 2 hours
Slow cooking produces a
particularly tender result,
although it is unlikely to be pink
inside, as it would be with a cut
roasted at high temperature.

Ingredients
2kg lamb shoulder
a little olive oil
8 anchovy fillets
3 bushy rosemary sprigs
8 thyme sprigs
200ml vegetable or chicken stock
or water
350g spring greens
250g shelled peas

Method
• Heat the oven to 180°C. Lay
the lamb in a large roasting tin,
then thoroughly rub all over with
olive oil.
• Season with sea salt and black
pepper. Pierce the fat in 15 or so
places, pushing 3-4cm deep into
the flesh.
• Finely chop the anchovies.
Pull the leaves from the rosemary
and thyme, then chop them
finely and mix with the chopped
anchovies. Push these down into
the slits in the lamb with your
fingers.
• Roast the lamb for an
hour and a half until the fat is
translucent, the colour of pale
honey.
• Remove the lamb from the tin
and set aside on a warm platter
to rest. I like to cover it with foil
at this point, to keep it nicely
warm.
• Trim and roughly chop the
stems of the greens, removing
the tender leaves and setting
them aside. (They will be used
later.) Place the roasting tin over
a moderate heat and pour in the
stock or water.
• Bring to the boil, then stir
with a wooden spatula or spoon
to dislodge all the roasted meat
juices from the pan, then add
the peas and stems of the greens
and cover the pan with foil to
allow the vegetables to cook in
their own steam. Leave for 4 or 5
minutes, turning once.
• Add the leaves of the greens
now, turning them in the hot
juices until they have wilted. Lift
all the vegetables on to a serving
dish.
• Turn up the heat under the
roasting tin and let it bubble for
a minute or two, then check the
seasoning. I like to add a little
red wine vinegar sometimes, or
perhaps a trickle of honey.
• Carve the lamb and serve
with the greens, peas and
roasting juices.
ROAST LAMB SANDWICHES WITH
CRUSHED PEAS AND WASABI
Enough for 4 open sandwiches
Lamb works very well when
eaten as a cold cut, but I think
it benefits from being used at
room temperature or, even
better, still slightly warm, rather
than fridge cold. So that will
make this a recipe for a Sunday
evening sandwich rather than
Monday night.
Ingredients
250g peas
1 tbsp wasabi paste
40g butter
4 thick slices sourdough bread
a little olive oil
salad leaves – mustard,
watercress, little gem lettuce
4 handfuls leftover roast lamb
roasting juices optional, but good
if you have some leftover
Method
• Put a saucepan with 100ml
water in it on to boil, salt it
lightly, then add the peas. Cook
until the peas are tender (3-4
minutes only if you are using
frozen peas, but 4-10 minutes if
using fresh, depending on their
age.)
• Drain the peas, add the
wasabi paste and butter, then
crush with a vegetable masher. I
like them to retain quite a bit of
texture, while others may prefer
to mash them to a smoother
consistency. Taste the mixture
and season if necessary.
• Toast the pieces of sourdough
bread lightly on both sides. I
have a preference for a few
charred edges on the crust.
• Sprinkle the surface of the
toast with a little olive oil, then
lay a few of the salad leaves on
each slice.
• Place a couple of spoonfuls
of the crushed pea mixture on
top of the leaves then add some
slices of the cold roast lamb.
• Salt the lamb generously,
then trickle over a few spoonfuls
of either olive oil or the delicious
hot roasting juices.
