The city council’s updated dog bylaw and policy came into effect on Monday. Under it, dogs are prohibited from Te Ihutai Avon Heathcote Estuary and parts of Styx Mill
“We’ve listened to community
feedback that wildlife in these
areas need protection from
dogs – a lot of dog owners
shared that sentiment.”
The city council dog bylaw
The Star, January 23, 2025
and policy was reviewed during
2024 and 2025. It included public
consultation.
As a result some rules are
new, some haved stayed the
same, others changed and
others have been relaxed,
Bridger said.
Dogs must now be leashed on
paths in green spaces such as
parks. There is also a limit on
the number of dogs a person
can walk together in a public
space – four dogs, with only two
off leash at a time in off-leash
areas, including dog parks.
“We’re working on an
exemption process for people
who have the skills required to
exercise multiple dogs safely,
and will have that ready in May
2026,” Bridger said.
He said Christchurch has
changed a lot over the past 10
years.
“We have more focus on
habitat restoration and wildlife
protection, and there are many
more paths and other areas
that are shared between people
walking, biking, scooting and
so on. We also have more dogs
than ever before.
“The rules have been
tightened in some places to
keep people, wildlife, stock, the
environment and dogs safe.”
He said the city has about
45,000 dogs registered to about
39,000 owners.
“Per capita, that’s about one
dog for every nine people.
“That is why we rely on people
knowing the rules and doing the
right thing,” Bridger said.
the city council’s website was
updated on Monday.
The city council is required by
law to update its dog bylaw and
policy at least every 10 years,
meaning it is likely the rules
in place now will remain until
about 2035.
Cat on the Road to Findout by Yusuf/Cat Stevens
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the life, music and spiritual adventures
ofYusuf/Cat Stevens, one of the iconic figures of our time. This is more than a memoir
- it’s a profound exploration of identity, faith, and the universal search for meaning.
Cat Stevens was launched to fame in the swinging sixties, and his early career was
drastically interrupted by a mortal battle with TB - a turning point that ignited his
quest for peace and understanding. This unveils the untold chapters of his remarkable
journey, illustrated with dozens of drawings in Yusuf’s own hand. Self-penned with raw
honesty and poetic insight, he reflects on the challenges, controversies, and triumphs
that have defined his life, offering readers a rare glimpse into the soul of a man who
has lived multiple lives in one - finally shedding light on all those hidden ‘in-betweens’.
Mana by Tame Iti
In Mana, iconic Maori activist, artist, and performer Tame Iti shares his extraordinary
life, defined by resistance, resilience, and rangatiratanga. Lyrical, wise, and deeply
personal, Mana traces Tame’s journey from a Tuhoe child silenced from speaking
his native tongue to becoming a lifelong crusader for self-determination and an
outspoken champion of te reo Maori. From marching for land rights in the 1970s to
being imprisoned under controversial charges during the Tuhoe raids, Tame’s memoir
is a raw and powerful reflection on what it means to live with mana - dignity, integrity,
and authority - in a world that often seeks to strip it away. Woven throughout with
te reo Maori, humour and moments of unexpected tenderness, this is the korero of
a man who has never stopped challenging the status quo.
Exploring Antarctica
from the classroom
Students have been exploring
Antarctica’s rich history as they
test out a new virtual Minecraft
world.
The project was launched
on Monday as part of the
Antarctic Heritage Trust’s
inspiring explorers education
programme. Minecraft is a
virtual sandbox game that
allows players to build and
explore immersive 3D worlds
using digital blocks. It is a
powerful tool for education
which is increasingly used in
classrooms across the globe.
The Shirley Intermediate and
St Andrew's College students
have been exploring Captain
To create the Antarctic
world, the trust partnered
with WDekkers Digital and
12 students from Shirley
Intermediate who helped build
the initial version of the hut.
Designed as a collaborative
classroom activity, the
students’ journey started
aboard Scott’s ship, RRS
Discovery, before going ashore
to meet early explorers and
learn about life on the ice. St
Andrew's College students
tested the Minecraft world in
small collaborative groups.
Shirley Intermediate
students were then the first to
explore the finished Minecraft
world when it was officially
launched.
Football-focused
study a winner for
academy students
A unique education programme
based around football is about
to end its first year. Bella
Dowling reports
“It’s not about what the teachers
want, it’s about what the
students are asking for.”
That is the guiding philosophy
behind the one-of-a-kind
football institute, where Ao
Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery
school students combine academic
learning with a passion
for football.
The football-focused programme,
launched earlier
this year in partnership with
Christchurch United FC, allows
students to earn NCEA levels 1,
2 and 3 through English, PE and
tailored football training.
All of the students transferred
from other schools specifically to
join the institute – including one
who moved alone from Invercargill
to take part.
Football is not the only specialised
pathway offered at Ao
Tawhiti. The Prosillo Dance
Academy provides students with
a route into professional dance,
while other specialist options
include the digital media special
programme and the senior
college of philosophy – each
designed around students’ interests
and aspirations.
While the school follows the
official New Zealand curriculum,
every student’s plan is individually
tailored to meet their
learning needs.
Football Institute learning
advisor Steve Hunt said studentdriven
learning was at the heart
of the programme’s success.
“So to sustainably grow and
get the best out of (the football
institute), we need to co-construct
plans with the students for
what they want to achieve.
“And we’ve had really high
levels of success with a lot of
students getting ‘excellence’
grades at NCEA achievement
standards.”
Students spend three days a
week training and studying at
the Christchurch United sports
centre, and two days in class at
the school.
Hunt said the balance allowed
them to meet NCEA requirements
while pursuing their
sporting ambitions.
Looking ahead, the school
is considering expanding the
Ao Tawhiti football academy students spend three days a week at the Christchurch United sports centre and then attend
school for the rest of the week.
PHOTO: CHRISTCHURCH UNITED
programme to
include years 7-10.
“And then we
are hoping to get a
full 11-a-side team
running next year
that would have
the boys competing
within the
Mainland secondary
school
Ian Hayes
competition,” said Ao Tawhiti
senior leader Ian Hayes.
“The school, the club, and the
students themselves are saying,
this would be the next cool
progression.”
Hunt said
students were
initially wary
of taking on too
much but had
grown confident
in balancing their
commitments.
“Although the
students were Sam Sheppard
cautious about
overloading themselves at the
beginning, they can now see that
they can make it happen.”
Year 12 student Sam Sheppard
said introducing a first XI team
would give players something
tangible to work toward.
“It will give us something to
train for, something that will
drive us as players.”
Hayes said plans were already
forming for what might come
next.
“And then after that, what can
we do? Getting the boys out to do
internships at sporting facilities
around the city? Getting visiting
speakers in? Sports psychologists?
What can we start adding
to the package to make the boys
well-rounded footballers?”
Changes to the programme are
expected to happen next year.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
This beautifully presented 3-bedroom,
2-bathroom home offers modern comfort
and effortless living in the heart of the
sought-after Milns Estate.
Built in 2021, this thoughtfully designed
residence blends contemporary style with
everyday functionality. The spacious openplan
living area forms the heart of the home,
featuring a modern kitchen with quality
appliances, a larger oven and rangehood,
and an extensive use of drawers rather than
cupboards for optimal storage. A good-sized
walk-in pantry with benchtops adds further
convenience. The generous dining and lightfilled
lounge open seamlessly to a sunny,
private outdoor patio, thoughtfully oriented
for all-day sun and easy indoor-outdoor
living - ideal for entertaining or relaxing in
your own haven.
The master bedroom includes a stylish
ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, and sliding
doors out into the garden. The third bedroom
has been designed as a versatile multipurpose
space - complete with extra windows
and currently used as a second living or
study area with a sofabed. The home also
features two heat pumps, one at each end of
the house, ensuring year-round comfort.
Quality finishes abound, including wool
carpet, dual-track drapes, and honeycomb
blinds throughout. The garden is rich and
organic, filled with natives, fruit trees and a
raised vegetable bed, all designed for easy-care
living with no lawns to mow (only the berm).
Practicality continues with excellent storage
options and a double internal-access garage
complete with added shelving.
Set on a manageable 382sqm section, the
property provides the perfect balance of
space and simplicity. Located within walking
distance to Halswell's shops, cafes, parks,
and local amenities, and with a new primary
school confirmed for Milns Road (opening
2027), this home offers an enviable lifestyle
in a friendly, well-established community.
With the vendor deciding to downsize, this
is your opportunity to secure a near-new,
low-maintenance home in a highly desirable
location - simply move in and enjoy.
