BY KEES CHALMERS
The Government made an
error in its announcement of
social housing development
in Christchurch, confusing
Lyttelton with Lyttelton St.
Housing Minister Chris
Bishop said on October 10
more than 65 new affordable
homes will be delivered
in Canterbury by community
housing providers, including
in Lyttelton.
The news was shared by
Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink on
Facebook,
who said the
homes will be
located in Lyttelton,
Linwood,
Merivale and
homes said to
be developed
The blunder was called out
by Labour List MP Tracey
McLellan, who is based in
Banks Peninsula.
“Just in case you were
excited about social homes
coming to Lyttelton . . . turns
out, there aren’t any,” she
wrote on Facebook.
McLellan was skeptical
of the announcement
and submitted written
parliamentary questions to
get more detail about the
Lyttelton homes.
She told The Star the reply
she received said the Ministry
of Housing and Urban
Development incorrectly
advised Bishop’s office new
social housing was planned
for Lyttelton.
“I think when you are
crowing about a very small
number of social houses,
not nearly as much as
any government could be
investing in, the least you can
do is know where they are,”
McLellan said.
Mayor Phil Mauger is
remaining tight-lipped about
why he chose a new deputy,
rather than retaining Innes
Ward city councillor Pauline
Cotter in the role.
Right-leaning Mauger
appointed political ally Victoria
Henstock as deputy mayor after
Cotter, a left-leaning The People’s
Choice member, had the
job for three years.
People’s Choice chair Paul
McMahon is concerned Henstock’s
appointment could
represent a turn by Mauger
toward a less collaborative
council table with an ally in the
deputy role.
Henstock and Mauger are
both independents but mostly
vote in alignment and share a
focus on fiscal discipline.
Mauger did not answer specific
questions from The Star on
why he replaced Cotter or any
political considerations he had
in the appointment.
In an emailed statement he
said: “As mayor, it’s my decision
who I appoint and I believe
her (Henstock’s) approach and
strong legal background will
complement my style well,
and that we'll work effectively
together to deliver for
Christchurch.”
Updated flooding map shows most at risk areas
A map showing which parts of
the city could be hit hardest
in a major flooding event has
been updated to include new
modelling data.
The city council has mapped
the latest data for flood events
predicted to happen on average
once every 10, 50, and 200
years.
Said head of three waters
Gavin Hutchison: “Anyone
making decisions about a property
or about flood readiness
for their home or business
can search the map and see
whether the land may be
BY DYLAN SMITS
Former city councillor James
Gough says he will likely make
the overdue donation of his
nearly $100,000 in directorship
earnings in the next few weeks.
He expects
the earnings
he received on
the Transwaste
director’s
board will be
donated to
the Mayor’s
Welfare Fund
“well before James Gough
Christmas”.
It is a requirement
for city councillors to
annually donate the earnings
they received for directorship
appointments to council-company
boards.
Gough has not done so since
his appointment to Transwaste
in February 2023.
In April, Gough promised to
donate the earnings at the end
of his term, which finished a
week ago, or “as close as practicably
possible”.
He was the only city councillor
to not donate their
directorship earnings during
the past city council term.
The Mayor’s Welfare Fund is a
last resort for people in financial
hardship who can
not receive the government
affected by a specific predicted
flood event.
“Similarly, people who are
building or undertaking major
renovations can check the calculated
minimum floor level
they may need to protect their
house from floodwater. Where
this isn’t yet available on the
map, we can calculate it if people
contact us.
“Checking our flood map
is a great first step, but it
doesn’t replace getting sitespecific
advice about the
suitability of the land for any
intended purpose, as well
support they need.
Gough did not seek re-election
in the October local body
elections as a city councillor,
but was elected as a Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board member.
When asked by The Star
about the outstanding donation
on Monday, Gough argued his
term had only ended two working
days previously.
“Nothing has changed for me
and as I’ve said from the outset,
I will be donating them to the
Mayor’s Welfare Fund.”
He said the tax and
as getting information from
other sources, such as a Land
Information Memorandum
(LIM), property file, or
insurance assessments.”
The flood map provides
separate computer models
for the different urban river
catchments – the Avon,
Heathcote, Styx, and Halswell
rivers – as well as for the
Sumner coastal catchment.
Gough promises to donate
$100k director income soon
Gough says he will donate his nearly $100,000 in outstanding directorship earnings as required, likely in the next few weeks.
accounting work necessary
before making the donation is
in progress.
“I don’t expect it to be too
long, probably a few weeks I’d
expect. I have discussed this
with the chair of the MWF only
a few days ago and he is totally
comfortable with this.”
Gough has said there is an
additional tax complication in
donating the Transwaste earnings
when compared to other
city councillor directorships.
Earnings are paid directly
to city councillors because the
company is not majority-owned
PHOTO: CCC
by the city council. Instead, it is
a joint venture of multiple Canterbury
councils.
Gough has said it makes more
sense for him to donate all
three years of earnings at once,
rather than annually.
“As soon as the work is done
with the tax elements taken
account of and offset, then I can
donate the full amount. This
includes ACC, tax and other
expenses.”
Gough received $13,363 in
directorship earnings for 2023,
$41,091 in 2024 and $43,967
in 2025.
Henstock says deputy role about who is
best for job ‘not which team you are on’
› From Page 1
Mauger noted former mayors
Garry Moore, Sir Bob Parker
and Lianne Dalziel all had a
change of deputy during their
tenure.
“Changing deputy mayors
is common practice in local
government,” he said.
The most recent deputy
mayors to serve two terms were
Cotter’s predecessor Andrew
Turner from 2016 to 2022 and
Lesley Keast from 1998 to 2004.
Mauger did not reveal which
other city councillors he might
have been considering for
deputy mayor when asked by
The Star.
McMahon,
who was
Waitai Coastal-
Burwood-
Linwood
Community
Board chair
last term,
questioned Paul McMahon
whether
Henstock could help bridge
divides on issues between leftleaning
city councillors and the
mayor.
He believes Cotter did this
well.
“She (Henstock) is a capable
person. We have to give her a
chance but Pauline was widely
regarded as an excellent deputy
Phil Mauger has appointed political ally Victoria Henstock as deputy mayor.
mayor, and was in her nature a
bridge builder,” he said.
“It’s unfortunate that the
mayor has used his power to go
in a different direction.”
Henstock, a former lawyer
now entering her second term,
says she can work well with all
city councillors.
“While I will be a key partner
in this work, alongside the
mayor, there are others around
the table from across the political
spectrum with experience
and mana, who also have this
responsibility.”
Mauger said he has “complete
confidence” in Henstock’s ability
to foster collaboration across
the city council table.
Henstock said while Cotter
was part of People’s Choice, her
own independent status does
not stop her from working with
the group’s members.
“I don’t see that as being a
barrier to me working with
them to try and find those common
grounds at all.”
Henstock said “people will
have their own opinions”
about any political considerations
from Mauger in the
appointment.
“I know that Phil ended
up choosing me because he
thought that I was the best
person for the job. It’s not about
which team you are on.”
McMahon says it is an “open
question” whether Henstock
can help foster a collaborative
council table in the deputy role.
Henstock sees the the job
primarily as supporting
Mauger.
“He has a very heavy load. So
if I can assist in any way, that’s
what will be most important.”
She will work through the
decision agendas with Mauger
to help them both gain a deep
understanding of the issues
before city councillors.
Henstock, like all deputies,
will chair meetings in Mauger’s
absence and attend public
events he can not fit into his
schedule.
Cotter believes Mauger
wanted to switch to a deputy
more aligned with his views
for his second term but insists
there are no
hard feelings
and she still
has a good
relationship
with the mayor.
“He spoke
very nicely
about my supporting
him last
Pauline Cotter
term,” she said.
“He’s chosen to put one of
his team in there, and he has a
right to do that, and that's just
the way it is.”
Mauger thanked Cotter for
her work in his inauguration
speech.
“Pauline, the support,
knowledge, and mana you
bought to the role of deputy
mayor cannot be understated,”
he said.
Cotter said her political
differences with Mauger,
and bridging the divide with
People’s Choice city councillors,
was not the main factor in her
appointment in 2022.
“He did want me there due
to my experience and helping
him settling into the new role of
being the mayor.”
But Cotter did say her and
Mauger “thinking differently”
has helped her be an effective
relationship builder between
city councillors of different
views.
Williams jailed for sexually violating 15yo
BY AL WILLIAMS
Kelvin Williams had already
spent more than 20 years
behind bars and amassed more
than 100 convictions when he
messaged a vulnerable teen on
social media.
Just five hours after adding
each other on Snapchat, Williams
picked the 15-year-old up
and took her back to his place.
Now, that teen has been left
angry, withdrawn and unable
to cope after he sexually violated
her.
The High Court at Christchurch
heard on Monday how the
girl was in the care of Oranga
Tamariki when the 51-year-old
started chatting with her on
Snapchat.
Williams was sentenced to
two years and four months’ jail.
The teen told him she had
been through the youth justice
system and asked how old he
was.
Williams told her he was 45
but not an “old man”. She told
him she was in an Oranga Tamariki
home.
They discussed meeting in
person, and it was arranged
for Williams to pick her up and
take her to his Christchurch
address.
They discussed using cannabis
and methamphetamine
together while Williams
indicated several times his
intentions to have sex with her.
She told him she was 15 to
which he responded “s*** that’s
pretty young lady” and “I feel
like a dirty old man lol”.
It was May 28 last year when
Kelvin John Williams at sentencing in the High Court at Christchurch.
he picked her up in the morning
and drove her to his place.
She again told him she was 15.
Once they got back to his
place, he took her to his
bedroom and started smoking
“crack”, offering her some,
which she declined.
As he began touching her, she
told him “no, I just came here
to hang”.
Williams started undressing
the victim, ripping her dress
and accidentally elbowing her
in the mouth before sexually
violating her.
He fell asleep for a period
before waking and again
sexually violating the victim.
He then forced the victim to
give him oral sex before falling
asleep again.
During the assault, he punched
her in her side in response to
her accidentally touching some
wounds on his shins.
Williams admitted the
outlined circumstances;
however, he denied any sexual
connection until DNA found on
the victim’s clothes matched
his.
Crown prosecutor William
Taffs said there was a
persistent predatory nature to
the offending.
While Williams didn’t have
a history of sexual offending,
he did have a violent offending
history and had spent a
“startling” amount of time in
custody, Taffs said.
“The impact on the victim has
been significant and has had
lasting consequences,” Taffs
said.
The court heard he had been
behind bars for 22 years and
had more than 100 convictions.
Williams was sentenced
to life imprisonment in 1996
after being found guilty of
murdering Clinton Strong in
Motueka on New Year’s Day
1995. Strong died after being
kicked and punched during a
fight over cigarettes.
In 2017, the Court of Appeal
found a miscarriage of justice
had occurred and Williams
should have been convicted of
manslaughter and jailed for
eight years.
Given the number of years
since the offending and time
already served in prison, a
retrial was deemed neither
feasible nor necessary.
In 2019, Williams was jailed
again, this time for assaulting a
female.
Defence lawyer Tony
Bamford said Williams suffered
“serious and significant” abuse
while in state care as a youth.
“He was let down in a
number of ways by the system.”
Bamford said the sexual
offending was “one off”.
Justice Rachel Dunningham
said while there was no victim
impact statement, a social
worker said the victim was
vulnerable on the day, and was
now angry, withdrawn and
unable to cope.
Justice Dunningham
suppressed some details
around the impact on the
victim.
“There was an age difference
of 36 years; you tried to
minimise it.”
Williams was added to the
child sex offender register.
Weenink said
Retired farmer’s comeback
Danny thought his active days
were behind him. Retired from
farming due to dodgy knees and
hips, he’d been watching his wife
handle the calves and drive the
tractor.
“Great woman,” he says with a
grin.
Then the incident ‘that October’
happened.
“I fell off my chair while she
was docking lambs and broke my
arm,” Danny recalls. “Couldn’t
even hold a bottle of draught, let
alone get the top off.”
His wife’s response? “She
couldn’t stop laughing.”
When the cast finally came off,
Danny’s arm was weaker than
before.
He began searching for
something to help online. That’s
when he discovered Koru FX, a
natural New Zealand-made cream
that’s gained a following among
active Kiwis.
What happened next has
become legend at Danny’s
local golf club - just like Danny
himself.
“My golf handicap improved
by four strokes in the first week,”
Danny says, still amazed. “Never
been around in under 100, and
suddenly here I am getting pars
and birdies. Everyone at the
club thought I was on something
illegal!”
The improvement wasn’t just
about golf scores. Danny found
his confidence returning with
each swing. The natural cream,
containing arnica, mānuka and
other botanical oils, had given
him the support he needed to play
without hesitation.
Word spread through the
clubhouse. An elderly couple
who typically needed two days to
complete nine holes approached
Danny about his secret.
After trying the cream, Danny
claims “they’re now cycling the
trails twice a week – impressive
for a pair of 80-year-olds.”
His enthusiasm even extended
to the local priest, pulling Danny
into the confessional with an
unusual request.
“He tells me his elbow was sore
from ‘dishing out communion and
shaking hands with parishioners’,”
Danny roared. “He’d heard I had
some magic potion.”
Danny gave his blessing along
with two bottles of Koru FX. The
result? “The fella beat me at golf
on Saturday.”
Now back from an extended
hunting and fishing trip
(“Couldn’t do that before” he
claims), Danny’s discovered
what thousands of other New
Zealanders have found – that
natural support can make a real
difference to staying active.
“It’s not about being
Superman,” Danny reflects. “It’s
about getting back to doing what
you love. Whether that’s helping
on the farm, breaking par, or just
opening your own beer again.”
His wife, still amused by the
whole saga, and even more so at
Danny’s interview, has suggested
they could “sell a truck load”
given how popular it’s become at
the golf club. But Danny’s more
focused on his next round.
“Life’s too short to watch from
the sidelines,” he says with a grin.
Relatives of decorated nurse, forgotten
A highly decorated war
nurse and four servicemen
lie in unmarked graves.
The Remembrance Army’s
Christchurch co-ordinator
Terry McLaughlin is looking
for their relatives, so they can
be honoured with headstones.
Geoff Sloan reports
Sister Blanche Helliwell was a
highly-decorated Christchurch
nurse who served overseas
during World War 2 – but today,
she lies in an unmarked grave
at Bromley Cemetery.
Remembrance Army Christchurch
co-ordinator Terry
McLaughlin is searching for
relatives of Helliwell and four
former servicemen also in
unmarked graves, after recently
receiving a donation from a
local RSA to provide service
headstones.
“They deserve to be properly
remembered,” he said.
The Remembrance Army
needs to show all efforts have
been made to try and find any
living relatives before Veterans'
Affairs New Zealand can accept
an application for a headstone,
McLaughlin said.
The Remembrance Army
is a nationwide volunteer
group dedicated to restoring
and maintaining the graves
of people who served in the
military, and discovering and
retelling their stories.
“Because whether they were
conscripted or volunteers, they
served this country,” he said.
Helliwell died aged 96 on February
24, 2005, and was buried
in her family’s plot.
“There’s a
family headstone
and a
plaque, and
she’s not on it.
I think being
unmarried
with no children,
there was
no one left to Blanche Helliwell
arrange it,” he
said.
“It’s quite sad really, because
she was possibly the last of her
line to die.”
A chance purchase of a
nursing history book listing
Christchurch Hospital-trained
nurses inspired McLaughlin to
investigate where they were
buried.
“That’s how I got onto Blanche
Helliwell.”
Helliwell started her training
at Christchurch Hospital in
the late 1920s and was working
at St George’s Hospital in 1939
when war broke out.
She enlisted in 1941, and after
training at Burnham Camp was
posted to the Dutch hospital
ship HS Oranje.
The Oranje served in the
Pacific, Mediterranean and Middle
East, and could take up to
800 patients.
After the war, Helliwell
returned to civilian nursing,
becoming head nurse of the
Christchurch Plunket Society.
She died 60 years after WW2
ended.
“I’ve been through her will,
and as far as I could see, there’s
nothing saying that she’s not to
have a headstone. But it would
be good if we could find her relatives,”
McLaughlin said.
Trooper Frederick Cleave Jones,
Rifleman James Samuel David
Byers and Transport Warrant
Officer, 2nd Class James Alexander
Middleton.
McLaughlin said arranging a
headstone for a war grave is a
long and expensive process.
“The whole process could cost
up to $1800 each time.”
He said commissioning the
headstone needed approval
from the city council and Veterans
Affairs New Zealand.
“Once the work is completed,
a laying ceremony takes place,
and any located relatives are
invited to attend.”
McLaughlin, a former registered
nurse, joined the
Remembrance Army in 2021,
after being asked to take
responsibility for Sydenham
Cemetery near his home.
“I said, oh yeah, that’ll be
fine. In my mind I had pictured
the small Addington Cemetery,
not the huge 16,000 burials
at Sydenham Cemetery I had
agreed to.”
He said it took him eight
months to narrow down people
who could have potentially
served in either the Boer War,
WW1, WW2, or both world
wars in some cases.
Over the past four years,
McLaughlin has helped maintain
and restore 450 service
graves at Sydenham, with 44
still unmarked.
“It’s as much a learning experience
as anything. Looking
into these people’s lives, how
they lived and died, gives you
a better perspective than just
reading a history book.”
McLaughlin plans to keep
going as long as he can.
“My mobility’s not great now,
but it would be good to see
the remaining unmarked war
graves at Sydenham Cemetery
recognised with headstones
before I finish,” he said.
“They deserve to be
remembered.”
McLaughlin is also seeking
relatives of the four servicemen
buried at Sydenham Cemetery:
the 8th Contingent of the New
Heritage
park cuts
full-time
positions
BY KEES CHALMERS
Two Ferrymead Heritage Park
workers have had their
full-time employment cut to
casual contracts to reduce costs.
It comes after a bid for
$320,000 from the city council’s
strengthening communities
fund failed, leaving the park in
financial trouble.
This came after the park
missed out in June on between
$700,000-$1.2 million a year for
the next three years as part of
the city council’s Annual Plan.
The two full-time staff were
from the maintenance and
education departments. One of
the workers has now decided
to leave the park and take up
another opportunity.
The park now has five fulltime
staff. It is not looking to cut
more jobs, general manager Ian
France said.
Instead it is exploring general
cost-cutting measures, and
potential income streams like corporate
sponsorship and grants.
The park is also putting
together a case to be considered
for funding in the city council’s
2026-27 Annual Plan.
France expects its requested
amount to be considerably less
than what it applied for this
year.
High-profile property developer
Stokes at ‘full tilt’
in club cricket
training session
BY SAM COUGHLAN
It is every aspiring cricketer’s
dream to be able to foot it with the
best, and a number of Sydenham
club players got the opportunity to
do just that with England captain
Ben Stokes.
Stokes, who lived in Christchurch
until he was 11, was visiting family
in the garden city before departing
to Perth on Tuesday to prepare
for the Ashes test series against
Australia.
Sydenham president Graham
Harris said Stokes said he was keen
to get some training under his belt
before departing. He has history
with the club, having trained with
them in 2019 and 2020 during
previous visits.
Stokes’ brother James plays
in one of Sydenham’s social T20
teams, and mum Deborah is also a
former player.
"(Stokes) is a very dedicated
cricketer and a very humble guy,
and the guys love training with
him,” Harris said.
“He's very helpful, very
constructive both with batting and
bowling. If he felt he could add
value he would with the players, so
I think they had a very, very, very
good experience.”
Stokes had three training sessions
with Sydenham premiership and
championship players on Friday,
Sunday and Monday.
Sydenham captain Mitchell
Gardner, who played against Stokes
during a season in the UK in 2016,
was at the Sunday session at the
Hagley Oval nets. Gardner said it
was a challenge to go up against
Stokes. But his troops held their
own against one of the world's best
all-rounders.
“On the Sunday he was cranking
it up with his bowling full tilt, and a
few of the boys said it was coming
down pretty quick. The batters liked
the idea of it until they kind of got in
the nets but they all enjoyed it.”
All-rounder Dylan McArdle
bowled and batted against Stokes
on Friday and Sunday and said he
enjoyed some success.
“I was lucky enough to catch
an outside edge or two, but
there would have been 100 runs
in between those, and he was
probably running off about three
hours sleep,” he said.
"Especially on that Sunday when
he was really charging in, you
Dylan McArdle bowled to Ben Stokes at Lincoln University on Friday, while Stokes also fired in a few balls.
PHOTO: ASH HART/HARTLAND IMAGES
can hit the ball, but he bowled a
bumper at me, and I sort of got
halfway into hooking it and it was
already flying into the back of the
net.”
McArdle felt lucky to train with a
player like Stokes. "There will be a
lot of cricketers far better than any
of us who haven't trained with a
player of his calibre,” he said.
Despite the English captain’s
help, McArdle was backing Australia
to be too strong in the
upcoming Ashes.
“Aussie are always tough to
beat at home, if I had to make a
prediction, I'd say 3-1 Aussie.”
Hay joins elite club Cashmere
player may
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Burnside West-University
captain Matt Hay has become
just the sixth player to bring
up 200 premier caps for the
club.
Hay, 28, reached the
milestone in their ongoing
two-day game against Old
Boys Collegians which
resumes on Saturday. He
played for the club as a
junior before attending
Christchurch Boys’ High,
before making his senior
Burnside debut in 2016.
Hay (right) has won seven
titles – six of them as captain
– making him the most
successful skipper in the
club’s history.
He said the trophies,
including the last three twoday
titles, are the highlight of
his time at the club so far.
"The winning's great, but
also probably how we have
turned the team from being
sort of a struggling side into
pretty consistent winners
over the last few years has
been the big highlight for me.
“It's obviously much more
enjoyable winning, and
with that we've been able to
attract and maintain good
people and good players.”
Hay has scored more than
5000 runs and taken over 350
wickets with his off-spinners.
But his past feats did not stop
him being caught behind
for a duck in his milestone
match last Saturday.
The all-rounder has played
nine times for Canterbury
between 2020 and 2023,
and has been a regular in
the Canterbury A set-up for
several years.
He hopes to continue his
representative career while
helping keep Burnside at the
top.
"They are the key things
for me, really just enjoying it
and trying to contribute.”
Burnside hold a 64-run
first-innings lead over Old
Boys, scoring 296 in response
to 232, thanks to Nick Gibb
(86), Tom Turner (67) and
Adam Winter (66).
Old Boys’ batter Josh
Tromp scored an unbeaten
125.
Riccarton siblings Lachie
and Angus Jemmett had a
day to remember against
Lancaster Park. Lachie took
seven wickets to bowl Park
out for 82 before Angus
scored 57 in support of Nick
Kwant’s 73 to help Riccarton
to 275.
Lachie added another
two wickets in the second
innings, with Lancaster Park
on 32/3 at stumps.
Heathcote’s Dutch
all-rounder Philippe
Boissevain thumped an
unbeaten 107 off 64 balls,
with 10 sixes as his side
declared on 305/7 against St
Albans, who were 145/7 in
response at stumps.
Sydenham are in control
against East Shirley. After
declaring on 255/8 they
bowled their opponents out
for 84 and have them 28/2,
still 143 runs behind.
Matches resume at
10.30am on Saturday.
face brother
BY DIANNE KEENAN
Cashmere’s Tyler Leonard will
take on his home club and
possibly his younger brother
in this weekend’s round of
interclub tennis.
Leonard returns home to
Ashburton to take on his former
club Mid Canterbury. Leonard’s
father Peter is the Mid
Canterbury president and his
brother, Riley Breen, is among
their players.
Leonard is so far unbeaten
in the men’s competition.
Cashmere dominated Edgeware
last week, only dropping one
game, to sit in second place on
the competition ladder.
Edgeware play Bishopdale
who scored their first win
against Te Kura Hagley on
Saturday. Competition leader
Burnside Park/Sumner, who
toppled Mid Canterbury at the
weekend, play Elmwood at
Burnside Park.
In the women’s competition,
Elmwood play table leader Te
Kura Hagley, who are coming
off a convincing 5-1 win against
Cashmere.
Cashmere will have their
hands full against Edgeware,
who currently sit second after
beating Bishopdale on Saturday.
Bishopdale will play Waimairi
this weekend.
DIABETES AWARENESS
Know more and do more for people with Diabetes at work
Diabetes and Well-being is the ongoing
theme for November’s Diabetes Awareness
Month 2025. The Diabetes Christchurch
Society campaign is focusing on “Diabetes
and the Workplace.” With appropriate
access to care and support for people with
diabetes, everyone with diabetes has the
chance to live well.
In collaboration with the International
Diabetes Federation (IDF), our society
is calling on employers, employees,
policymakers, and the diabetes
community to “Know More and Do More
for People with Diabetes at Work”. Our
campaign highlights the challenges faced
by people with diabetes and those at risk
at work.
People with diabetes face daily
challenges managing their condition at
work, including stigma, discrimination
and exclusion. This can have a negative
impact on their well-being. Join our call to
‘Know More and Do More for Diabetes at
Work’.
• 7 in 10 people living with diabetes are
of working age.
• 3 in 4 people living with diabetes
have experienced anxiety, depression or
another mental health condition because
of their diabetes.
• 4 in 5 people living with diabetes
experienced burnout.
Many workplaces are an unhealthy
environment for employees. The lack of
access to physical activity, healthy food
choices and support for mental well-being
is harmful for people with diabetes or at
risk of type 2 diabetes.
Employers should create a safe,
supportive and healthy work environment
for people with diabetes. Diabetes
Christchurch has a range of educational
diabetes resources to help your workplace,
and for everyone to better understand
diabetes, including “Knowing the
different types of diabetes, Type 2 sickday
management, Workplace tips/help,
Knowing your rights/responsibilities.
Workplaces are welcome to contact our
society on 925-9972 or can arrange to
call in to obtain printed copies of these
documents.
DIABETES CHRISTCHURCH SUPPORTING PEOPLE
WITH DIABETES People with diabetes must
be resilient, organised, and responsible,
impacting both their physical and mental
well-being. Diabetes care often focuses
only on blood sugar, leaving many
overwhelmed.
• 36% of people with diabetes experience
diabetes distress.
• 63% of people say that the fear of
developing diabetes-related complications
affects their well-being.
• 28% of people with diabetes find it
hard to remain positive in relation to their
condition.
Everyone knows someone with diabetes
… a family member, relative, colleague
or a friend - YOU all can help support
and spread the word about diabetes and
well-being.
Just over 31,000 people have diagnosed
diabetes in Canterbury. 10% have type 1,
approximately 86% have type 2 and 4%
have other types. Diabetes is the result of
the body not creating enough insulin to
keep blood glucose (sugar) levels in the
normal range (between 4-8). Everyone
needs some glucose in their blood, but
if it’s too high, it can damage your body
over time. The two most common types of
diabetes are type 1 and type 2.
Type 1 Diabetes is an ‘auto-immune’
condition where the body attacks the
insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Insulin must therefore be delivered
several times daily by injection or insulin
pump. There is no known cause and no
cure to date.
In Type 2 Diabetes, your body makes
insulin, but it isn’t used efficiently. This
is also called insulin resistance. As the
condition progresses, a lack of insulin
may also develop. The most common
cause is excessive body weight and not
enough exercise. For many people (but not
all) type 2 diabetes may be prevented by
making healthy food choices and staying
active. Diabetes that happens during
pregnancy is called Gestational Diabetes,
and while it usually disappears following
the pregnancy, it may lead to Type 2
diabetes later in life.
Our Diabetes Christchurch membership
offers you contact with other people,
exercise/activities, discounted shop
products. Staff can help you find further
information about various aspects of
diabetes care or make an appointment for
subsidised podiatry toenail clipping, PAD
(Peripheral Artery Disease) Screening and
Community Retinal Screening.
Our diabetes shop has a wide range of
medical products, including blood glucose
testing meters, blood glucose test strips,
finger pickers and lancets, ketone test
strips, continuous glucose sensors, hypo
treatments, medical grade shoes/socks,
insulin travel bags, Jams/Sauces, and
diabetes/ gluten free recipe books.
Diabetes Christchurch has an armchair
exercise group led by an experienced
instructor, Janet Straight, and we also have
an older person’s support group for people
living with all types of diabetes. Join us for
this fantastic opportunity to connect with
others living with diabetes, move your
body, and most importantly, have fun!
DIABETES EVENTS: The society is
hosting several activities alongside and
collaboratively with the Region 402E
Lions Groups. There will be “Bee-Active
PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) SCREENING TESTS
AVAILABLE: BOOK NOW at Diabetes Christchurch.
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a common type of cardiovascular disease, which
affects many people. It happens when the arteries in the legs/feet become clogged with
fatty plaques through a process known as atherosclerosis.
While some people with this disease experience minimal
symptoms, the most classic symptoms are pain, cramps,
numbness, weakness or tingling that occurs in the legs during
walking – known as intermittent claudication.
These problems affect around 30% of people with PAD.
Intermittent claudication is more common in adults over 50,
especially males, or who have diabetes and people who
smoke. The management of PAD varies
depending on the disease severity and
symptoms. Treatment options for PAD
include lifestyle changes, cardiovascular
risk factor reduction, pharmacotherapy,
endovascular intervention, and surgery.
gets amazing feedback!
“Since using the Aircycle the swelling
in my legs and feet have decreased
dramatically, my ulcerated toe has started
to heal and all the pain from my toe has
gone. The toes on my other foot have
stopped tingling and getting sore on the
tips and they are back to a healthy pink
colour. I am now able to walk much
further without pain.”- Richard UK.
• “ Within two weeks of using the
Aircycle my ulcer was starting to heal and
in six weeks it was completely healed.
My physio said it was because I was
exercising more. It’s good to be able to
do something whilst sitting, especially
when it’s so easy yet effective.”- Jane,
• “The Aircycle is even better than the
information says. The pain in my knees
has gone and although I use a walker I
don’t need it around the house anymore.
I can move more freely and have much
less pain in both my hands and feet. My
Breaking barriers in
Diabetes care
New Zealand’s progress in Diabetes
Technology is being driven by people
who understand it from the inside out,
using personal experiences to create
better tools for others.
By people living with Diabetes, for
people living with Diabetes
Our journey began during COVID-19,
when founder Sam Leathwick, with 25
years of lived diabetes experience and
a background in social science, spent
his lockdowns with the online diabetes
community around the world. Seeing
the advanced technology others were
using to manage their diabetes, he
asked a simple question: “Why don’t
New Zealanders have access to the same
tools our friends overseas use every
day?”
Determined to change that, Intuitive
Therapeutics was founded to remove
barriers to diabetes technology, and
make innovative, life-enhancing tools
accessible to people across Aotearoa.
that meet the needs of the diabetes
that fits seamlessly into daily life, and
the LinX Continuous
Glucose Monitor (CGM)
option for real-time
glucose tracking.
United skipper heads
to UK for club trials
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Christchurch United skipper Jago
Godden is looking forward to putting his
best foot forward in the United Kingdom
after playing his last game for the club.
United’s 2-2 National League draw
with Auckland City at home on Saturday
was Godden’s final appearance before
leaving New Zealand on Monday. He is
planning to trial for a number of clubs
once he arrives in the UK and wants to
play at “as high a level” as possible.
"Playing and earning a decent whack
and living off it, I’ll take whatever I can,
basically, and we’ll just see where we get
to with it as an overseas experience.”
Godden, 21, put in a star performance
against 10-time Oceania champions
Auckland, who drew 1-1 with Argentine
powerhouse Boca Juniors at this year’s
Club World Cup in the United States.
The midfielder was awarded man of
the match and said it was a shame he
would not be around for the remainder
of the National League.
“I wanted to (stay), but the timing’s just
in line, that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
United sit third in the National League.
The top-two will contest the final at the
end of the season. United trail secondplace
Western Springs by five points with
four games remaining, starting away
to Birkenhead United in Auckland on
Sunday.
Godden had no doubt his side could
put together a run of results and finish in
the top-two.
“Way crazy things have happened.
Western Springs have got a couple of
campaign against Miramar Rangers
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
Matt Doocey
MP for Waimakariri
Around the Electorate
Belfast joins communities taking
their streets back through CCTV
It was fantastic to team up with Belfast Area Residents’ Association (BARA) chair
Charlotte Gavin to host a public meeting in September at the Belfast Bowling
Club where we discussed the implementation of community-led CCTV across
northern Christchurch. Following successful rollouts elsewhere in the electorate,
beginning with Sovereign Palms in Kaiapoi in 2023, it’s great to be involved
with another community working towards safer streets. Charlotte has worked
incredibly hard in this space and I am grateful to her for her efforts to improve
safety, reduce antisocial behaviour and stand up for her local community. I look
forward to helping any other community that would like to explore similar projects
to eliminate boy racers and other antisocial activity.
Woodend Bypass construction under way
As everyone knows, I have been a staunch advocate for the Woodend Bypass
for many years, so it was exciting to visit the site of the geotechnical drilling
back in June, ahead of the actual road construction starting. The last National
Government announced building the new motorway in 2017, however the project
was cancelled by the incoming Labour Government the year later, in 2018. I
know people in my electorate were as excited as I was to see contractors on site
starting this planning work as it just signalled another milestone for this vital
infrastructure. Not only will the bypass vastly improve safety for the residents
of Woodend, but it will be a game-changer for anyone travelling to and from
Christchurch from the Waimakariri and further north.
Significant funding boost for wildlife
visitor experiences
I enjoyed hosting my colleague and Conservation Minister Tama Potaka in the
electorate earlier in the year, which included a visit to the Isaac Conservation
and Wildlife Trust facility and an announcement of $22 million to support native
species and tackle invasive pests. The money will come from the International
Visitor Levy and will be put into restoring unique wildlife in national parks, islands
and other popular visitor sites over the next three years. We are fortunate to have
places like the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust on our doorstep, where a
small team of dedicated staff run captive breeding programmes to ensure our
most vulnerable and treasured species are not at risk of extinction.
Around the Electorate
I enjoyed celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with Consul General
Madame He Ying, Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown and Steven Wong President
Federation of NZ Chinese Associations.
Attending the sod turning to officially mark the start of construction on
a new mental health facility at Hillmorton Campus with Health Minister
Simeon Brown.
It’s always fun to attend the annual Kiwi Indian Excellence
Awards organised by the Canterbury Punjabi Association.
Thanks to the team at the Canterbury Museum for the tour around their
warehouse where thousands of exhibits are stored ahead of the Museum
rebuild opening.
Excellent to open the Rangatahi Connection Centre
at Odyssey House, a dedicated space for young
people to access mental health and addiction
services.
It was an honour to lay a wreath
on behalf of the Government
at the Canterbury Earthquake
Civic Memorial Service in
Christchurch.
It is always a privilege to host Prime Minister Christopher
Luxon in the Waimakariri.
