Dogs banned from Estuary under bylaw
Dogs are now banned from the
Estuary, including at the beach
around Southshore Spit Reserve
and near Shag Rock, as well as
parts of Styx Mill Conservation
Reserve.
The rule changes came into
effect on Monday, as part of
the city council’s updated dog
bylaw and policy.
New rules have also been
set for the Ōtākaro Avon River
Corridor and for Te Kuru
Wetlands in Halswell.
The rules aim to balance
wildlife protection and
recreational access in these
developing areas, city council
animal management manager
Lionel Bridger said.
“Some areas across the
district are vital habitats
where birds roost, rest, breed
and/or feed, and dogs pose a
significant threat to them. This
is the case in estuary, wetland
and riverbank environments,
especially for ground-nesting
birds.
“We’ve
The Star,
listened
January 23,
to
2025
community
feedback that wildlife in these
areas need protection from
dogs – a lot of dog owners
shared that sentiment.”
The city council dog bylaw
and policy was reviewed during
2024 and 2025. It included public
The consultation.
Star, January 23, 2025
As a result some rules are
new, some haved stayed the
same, others changed and
others have been relaxed,
Bridger said.
Dogs must now be leashed on
paths in green spaces such as
parks. There is also a limit on
the number of dogs a person
can walk together in a public
space – four dogs, with only two
off leash at a time in off-leash
areas, including dog parks.
“We’re working on an
exemption process for people
who have the skills required to
exercise multiple dogs safely,
and will have that ready in May
2026,” Bridger said.
He said Christchurch has
changed a lot over the past 10
years.
“We have more focus on
habitat restoration and wildlife
protection, and there are many
more paths and other areas
that are shared between people
walking, biking, scooting and
so on. We also have more dogs
than ever before.
“The rules have been
tightened in some places to
keep people, wildlife, stock, the
environment and dogs safe.”
He said the city has about
45,000 dogs registered to about
39,000 owners.
“Per capita, that’s about one
dog for every nine people.
“That is why we rely on people
knowing the rules and doing the
right thing,” Bridger said.
The city council’s updated dog bylaw and policy came into effect on Monday. Under it, dogs are prohibited from Te Ihutai Avon Heathcote Estuary and parts of Styx Mill
Conservation Reserve.
An email outlining the rules
has been sent to registered dog
owners and information on
the city council’s website was
updated on Monday.
The city council is
starnews.co.nz
required by
law to update its dog bylaw and
policy at least every 10 years,
meaning it is likely the rules
in place now will remain until
about 2035.
Exploring Antarctica
from the classroom
Students have been exploring
Antarctica’s rich history as they
test out a new virtual Minecraft
world.
The project was launched
on Monday as part of the
Antarctic Heritage Trust’s
inspiring explorers education
programme. Minecraft is a
virtual sandbox game that
allows players to build and
explore immersive 3D worlds
using digital blocks. It is a
powerful tool for education
which is increasingly used in
classrooms across the globe.
The Shirley Intermediate and
St Andrew's College students
have been exploring Captain
Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery
Hut, the first expedition base
built on Antarctica’s Ross
Shirley
Intermediate
students Quorra,
Falcon Scott’s
Discovery Hut.
To create the Antarctic
world, the trust partnered
with WDekkers Digital and
12 students from Shirley
Intermediate who helped build
the initial version of the hut.
Designed as a collaborative
classroom activity, the
students’ journey started
aboard Scott’s ship, RRS
Discovery, before going ashore
to meet early explorers and
learn about life on the ice. St
Andrew's College students
tested the Minecraft world in
small collaborative groups.
Shirley Intermediate
students were then the first to
explore the finished Minecraft
world when it was officially
launched.
CLUB CUP DAY
CUP DAY is coming to Hornby Club. Not just the
home of a massive 4x6m super screen, Hornby Club
is also a dedicated racing community.
“Cup Week has been a long tradition of the Club,” says
Hornby Club Manager, Tim Mathews.
“Clubs have always been a home of horse racing. With
many of our members being syndicated owners and avid
supporters of racing, there are plenty of tips and
commentary ying around the Club on big race days. As
a result, Canterbury Cup Week is a special day for
members and our local community. While we all can’t
make it to Addington, we ensure the Hornby Club has a
fantastic atmosphere to keep our local punters
entertained,” shares Tim.
Cup Day is Tuesday 11 November, and the day is sure
to be another fabulous actioned packed day.
For those heading to the races, Hornby Club offers a
breakfast to start festivities.
For just $25 you can be part of their buffet breakfast,
amongst the racing enthusiasts. All attendees will also go
in the draw to win a share of $100 in TAB vouchers,
raffles or a Christmas ham.
Racing proceedings kick off at 11.45am with the rst
race, from there the Hornby Club will have a full day of
horse racing, raffles, lucky loser draws and best dressed
prizes.
Looking for more? e Hornby Club has a manned
TAB and three pods, the perfect mix for those looking to
make the day a little more exciting.
“I think the TAB and our raffles really set us apart
from typical bars. You can really get in on the action and
have those same butteries you feel at the race. It’s an
exciting day and we can’t wait to celebrate with our
members.”
