The future of CNC carcass processing:
FORMAT4’s creator 1250 redefines efficiency
Perfectly timed to mark FORMAT4’s 25th anniversary, the Felder Group presents a
new CNC machining centre that sets the highest standards in carcass processing
With its premium brand
FORMAT4, Felder Group
is once again pushing the
boundaries of woodworking
technology with the
introduction of its creator 1250. Succeeding
the proven creator 950, this new machine
represents not just an evolution but a
revolution – elevating efficiency, precision
and flexibility to an entirely new level.
COMPACT POWER MEETS INFINITE
POSSIBILITIES
The creator 1250 proves that outstanding
performance doesn’t require a large
footprint. Thanks to innovative space
management, the machine is capable of
complete and complex carcass processing
in under 8m². With a standard workpiece
length of 2,800mm – optionally extendable
to virtually unlimited length – and an
impressive processing width of up to
1,250mm, there’s now no limits to modern
interior design projects. Even the production
of wide interior doors is easily achievable.
PRECISION & EFFICIENCY IN EVERY DETAIL
At the heart of this new CNC machining
centre lies a massive welded machine frame,
providing a vibration-optimised foundation
for exceptional precision. Driven by a
powerful 9kW milling spindle – optionally
12kW – the creator 1250 handles even the
most demanding machining tasks with ease.
Increasing efficiency was a key focus during
its development. The proven horizontal
workpiece transport system ensures
maximum process reliability and ergonomic
operation. An intelligent pneumatic system
automatically adapts to component
thickness, drastically reducing processing
times and energy consumption. A special
highlight is the optionally extended X-axis,
which minimises reclamping cycles and
significantly increases machining quality
for long components.
INNOVATIVE FEATURES FOR MAXIMUM
FLEXIBILITY
The creator 1250 is engineered for versatility
and productivity, featuring the following:
• Expanded tool changer: Up to 16 tool
positions, including four for aggregates
and a C-axis, which reduces setup times
to a minimum.
• Enhanced workpiece measurement:
A new fork light sensor reliably detects
a wide range of colours, surfaces and
edge geometries for optimal precision.
• Versatile drilling heads: In addition
to proven models, a drilling head with
interfaces for Lamello Clam-XP tools
is now available.
• Integrated dowel unit: Optional fully
automatic insertion of 8mm dowels
increases automation and process
reliability.
THE DECISIVE ADVANTAGE
OVER CONSOLE CNC MACHINES
Compared with traditional console systems,
the creator 1250 offers clear advantages:
it requires significantly less space, eliminates
the time-consuming manual positioning
of vacuum pods and delivers a higher degree
of automation through features such as
automatic dowel insertion. Meanwhile,
the gentle workpiece transport on plastic
rollers ensures damage-free processing
of even the most sensitive surfaces.
By investing in the new FORMAT creator
1250 CNC machining centre, woodworking
companies can transform their production
processes in addition to gaining a decisive
competitive edge.

Reducing stair accidents: Evidence for
behaviour change & safer design
BWF Technical Director Kevin Underwood reveals why urgent action on stair
design and safety could prevent hundreds of serious injuries each year
New research conducted by the
BWF shows that stair accidents
are common, with many people
slipping or falling at home. While
younger adults recorded the
highest number of accidents, older people
experienced the most serious – and
sometimes fatal – injuries.
In this article, I’ll highlight evidence that
demonstrates why behaviour change and
safer stair design are essential as well as
reflecting on research commissioned by
the Ministry of Housing, Communities and
Local Government (MHCLG) to inform
updates to Approved Document K. This
research supports enhanced stair design
standards, improved handrail provision
and better step dimensions, helping
to drive regulatory change that could
reduce accidents as well as saving lives.
In September, the British Woodworking
Federation launched its Speak Up for Stair
Safety campaign in response to research
showing that 43% of UK adults had
experienced a slip, trip or fall on stairs in
the previous 12 months, with 60% of those
incidents occurring in their own homes.
Younger adults displayed a higher risk,
with more than 60% of those aged 18-34
reporting accidents, compared with just 33%
of over-65s. However, while younger people
experience accidents more frequently,
older people face a greater risk of fatal
injury. Data from the Office for National
Statistics (ONS) shows that in 2023, more
than 850 people aged over 65 died from
a “fall on or from stairs and steps.”
Despite 84% of people acknowledging
that device use increases the risk of falling,
nearly a third admit to scrolling social media
or using messaging apps while on the stairs.
A similar proportion admit to leaving items
such as laundry or parcels on the stairs,
even though 40% recognise this as a
hazard and 6% say it’s caused them to fall.
The BWF’s research shows that awareness
of risks isn’t translating into behaviour
change, highlighting the need for broader
awareness-raising and better education
about the real dangers presented by
slips, trips and falls on stairs.
A 2024 report from the Royal
Society for the Prevention of
Accidents (RoSPA) also found
that accidents are becoming
the leading cause of preventable
death for people under 40, and
that almost half of accidental
deaths in 2022 resulted from falls.
Regular stair maintenance is
also essential: almost a third of
accidents were linked to broken
safety features or poor upkeep.
The top five hazards reported
were as follows:
• Slippery surfaces (40%)
• Poor lighting (32%)
• Items left on the stairs (29%)
• Uneven steps (26%)
• Lack of handrails (23%)
While the BWF data indicates that individuals
must take greater responsibility for their
own stair safety, many incidents could be
prevented by safer stair design. RoSPA has
stated that adopting the recommendations
of British Standard BS 5395-1:2010
– currently voluntary – could reduce
the risk of stair falls by up to 60%.
To support proposals to update
Approved Document K to align with
BS 5395-1:2010, MHCLG has published
the final report from the Rise and Going
Consultancy, titled ‘Evidence to Support
Potential Changes to Approved Document K
Guidance on Domestic Stairs’. The research
was commissioned to provide objective,
evidence-based information on step
dimensions, consistency and handrail
provision, in support of the Building Safety
Regulator’s duty under the Building Safety
Act 2022 to ensure Approved Documents
reflect current knowledge of safety risks
in the built environment.
The research explored:
• The optimal rise and going dimensions
for steps;
• Whether tolerances should be allowed,
and to what extent;
• Whether adding a second handrail
to stairs under 1,000mm wide could
support usability and reduce risk.
The findings showed that increasing the
minimum going from 220mm to 275mm
significantly improves safety, even allowing
slight variations between steps without
increasing risk due to better foot placement.
The provision of a handrail on each side
of the stair was shown to help users who rely
on support and to prevent falls among those
who typically don’t use handrails but would
instinctively reach for one if they slipped. The
research also found that the current 900mm
height requirement for private stair guarding
is too low to protect most adults, especially
when descending and is insufficient to
deter children from attempting to climb it.
Combined, the BWF and MHCLG research
demonstrates that both safer stair design
and changes in user behaviour could
substantially reduce accidents, hospital
admissions and deaths.

Dust Control Environmental (DCE)
marks major manufacturing milestone
DCE’s 1,000th dust extractor
– an Envirojet W-Series –
leaves the factory
The Wakefield-based manufacturer recently celebrated a major production milestone
as its 1,000th dust extractor – an Envirojet W-Series unit – rolled out of the factory
Established 15 years ago by
owner and Managing Director
Martin Gill, DCE began life in a
small office and garage space
in Morley, West Yorkshire, where
the very first prototype dust extraction
unit was developed.
As the business grew and prototypes
evolved into market-ready products, it soon
became clear that the UK lacked sufficient
high-quality manufacturers in this sector.
To ensure reliability and long-term
sustainability, DCE decided to bring key
elements of its manufacturing process
in-house, which prompted a move to
larger premises.
In December 2015, DCE relocated to its
current 14,000sq.ft facility in Wakefield.
This move enabled vital production
processes – such as powder coating – to be
completed on-site. The result was improved
manufacturing time-scales, enhanced
product quality and a more cost-effective,
environmentally friendly operation.
The new space also allowed the company
to grow its skilled workforce, expanding
from an original team of five to a current
staff of 28. This steady expansion reflects
DCE’s deepening expertise across design,
engineering, installation and customer
service, solidifying its reputation as a
trusted name in the dust and fume
extraction industry.
Fast forward to present day and we see
DCE celebrating its 1,000th dust extractor

Advanced automation: How HOMAG is transforming
fire door manufacturing at Hugh Stirling
As part of a strategic expansion into fire door manufacturing, Glasgow-based construction and fit-out specialist,
Hugh Stirling has invested in a HOMAG CENTATEQ P-110 CNC and EDGETEQ S-200 edgebander. This move supports
the company’s growing fire door division while maintaining quality across its wider joinery operations
F
or more than 60 years, Hugh
Stirling has built its reputation on
personal pride, high standards and
a collaborative approach, delivering
bespoke interiors and construction
projects across the commercial, hospitality
and industrial sectors. The company employs
around 130 skilled tradespeople and staff,
combining traditional craftsmanship with
advanced manufacturing technology.
A GROWING FOCUS ON FIRE DOORS
The investment in HOMAG machinery
comes as Hugh Stirling increases its fire door
production capacity, as Managing Director,
Brian Muslek, explains: “We’re a multifaceted
business and do everything from
bespoke joinery and facilities management
to full interior fit-outs – anything from pubs
to power stations. Our fire door division
has been growing and our existing CNC
was reaching capacity with bespoke joinery
work. The HOMAG CENTATEQ P-110 is a
dedicated solution for fire door production.”
The new EDGETEQ S-200 is enhancing
joinery operations, while the previous
edgebander has been redeployed to the
fire door line. Together, the machines help
balance production as well as supporting
increased throughput.

HOMAG QUALITY & LOCAL SUPPORT
For this investment, Hugh Stirling was keen
to find a solution that delivered reliability,
precision and strong local support.
“Our other machines are from different
manufacturers, all of which continue to serve
us well,” says Brian. “One thing that drew
us to HOMAG for this investment was their
locality. They have a local sales and service
partner in Scotland, AWMS, who have been
fantastic throughout the process. Kenny
from AWMS has been a great point of
contact, guiding us through the process
and providing technical information
during the purchase and installation.
“Alongside the local support, build
quality was a major factor in the decision.
Our experience with other high-quality
machinery meant we knew what to look
for. It was clear that HOMAG’s kit would
suit our needs.”
SMOOTH INSTALLATION & EARLY
RESULTS
Despite some infrastructure adjustments
on Hugh Stirling’s side, the installation
proceeded smoothly, as Brian confirms:
“HOMAG and AWMS were incredibly
flexible; they managed the installation
around us without any issue.”
Once operational, the CENTATEQ P-110
immediately began delivering results:
“It’s a really impressive piece of kit,” Brian
continues. “Our production team reports
that features like the LED setup guides
and tandem table machining are helping
reduce setup times and improve throughput.
We’ve seen an increase in output per hour
and we expect further gains as our team
fully familiarises itself.”
USER-FRIENDLY PRECISION
Ease of use has been another key advantage:
“The woodWOP 9 software and PC 87
operating system are fantastic,” says Brian.
“According to our operators, they’re intuitive,
app-based and quick to learn. Some CNCs
require a lot of training and experience to
operate, but with woodWOP, any operator
can program a job in under a minute. It’s
as simple as clicking what you want the
machine to do, with no fuss whatsoever.
“We also added an aggregate tool, which
has halved the time it takes to run and pilot
hinge holes, all in a single pass. It’s boosted
both speed and accuracy and gives us the
flexibility to carry more tooling options.”
PARTNERSHIP & SUPPORT
Brian is eager to point out that the
experience of working with both HOMAG
and AWMS has been extremely positive:
“It’s early days, but
so far, anything we’ve
needed has been dealt
with promptly and
professionally.
Between HOMAG’s
quality and AWMS’
local support, we have
a lot of confidence
moving forward.”
LOOKING AHEAD
With the new HOMAG
machinery now fully
operational, Hugh
Stirling is well positioned
to expand its fire door
production in addition
to strengthening
bespoke joinery
operations, as Brian
concludes: “It’s
an exciting time for
us. The new machines
support our growth
and help maintain
the quality our clients
expect. We’re looking
forward to seeing the
full impact over the
coming months.”

Stop waiting for January: Why woodworking
businesses should act before 2026
David Ward, Woodworking Manager at BPI, discusses why delaying decisions until
the new year holds businesses back, and how selling unused machinery today can
free space, release capital and set woodworking companies up for success in 2026
David Ward,
Woodworking
Manager
at BPI
E
very November, the same
refrain starts to echo: “We’ll look
at that after Christmas.” For many
woodworking businesses, that
means delaying the difficult
but important decisions – upgrading
equipment, freeing up workshop space
or even planning for retirement.
But the truth is simple: if you wait
until January, you’ve already lost ground.
If you want to start 2026 in a strong
position, the time to act is now.
At BPI, each week we work with
woodworking companies that wish they’d
moved sooner. Some are chasing growth
but need capital for a new CNC router;
others want to streamline workshops by
reducing older, inefficient kit; and some
are owners preparing to step away after
decades of hard work. In every case,
outcomes aren’t decided by luck; they’re
decided by how early and decisively
action is taken.
YOUR WORKSHOP COULD BE SITTING
ON HIDDEN CAPITAL
Unwanted machinery, underused saws,
even old vans – these don’t just take
up space; they tie up cash. They’re not
gathering dust; they’re holding potential.
The sooner this equipment is brought to
market, the sooner that capital can start
working for you – whether it’s reinvested
in modern machinery, used to reduce debt
or put aside as part of a retirement plan.
SELLING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SLOW
OR COMPLICATED
Many owners hesitate because they
think disposing of equipment is timeconsuming
or risky. That may have
been true years ago, but not anymore.
At BPI, we’ve streamlined the entire
process into a fast, transparent and
profitable system. Our online platform
reaches more than 700,000 unique
users each year, including over 180,000
registered bidders competing 24/7. More
eyes on your machinery means better
results than traditional disposal routes.
Take A.M. Products in Somerset, for
example. When owner Andrew Willment
decided to retire, he asked us to help.
Within two days, we catalogued more
than 125 lots of woodworking equipment,
promoted them to the right buyers and
delivered a hammer price of more than
£147,000. Andrew was able to step away
on his own terms – not months later, but
within weeks.
ACTING NOW GIVES YOU OPTIONS
Waiting until January limits your choices
and increases pressure. By taking stock
now, identifying what’s underused and
putting it to work, you give yourself the
flexibility and momentum to start the
new year in control.
With BPI, there’s no upfront costs,
no middlemen and no need to move
machinery off-site unless you choose
to do so. You can set reserves to protect
asset value, making the process risk-free
and completely under your control.
And while some business owners are
waiting to see what the budget brings,
the bigger risk is doing nothing. Whatever
policies are announced, businesses that
act decisively today will always be better
positioned tomorrow.
So, here’s my challenge to woodworking
businesses across the UK: stop waiting.
Whether you want to reinvest, restructure
or step away entirely, the decisions you
make in November and December will
shape your business in 2026. Sitting on the
fence is the only choice guaranteed to hold
you back. The woodworking businesses that
act now will be the ones ready to seize
the opportunities of the year ahead.

Premier Forest Products embraces Ecogate® efficiency
with Extractly
Headquartered at Alexandra Docks, Newport, South Wales, Premier Forest Products has, over the last three decades,
evolved into one of the UK’s leading independent timber companies
Operating multiple sites
across the UK, with over
450 employees, Premier
Forest specialises in the
importation, distribution,
machining, engineering and processing
of timber and timber products.
The company’s extensive product range
covers almost every conceivable timber item.
However, as with any business delivering
more than 400 tonnes of timber goods on
a daily basis, a significant volume of dust
waste is inevitably produced through its
various manufacturing processes.
This impressive growth has been fuelled
by a combination of strategic acquisitions
and ongoing investment in high-speed
production machinery. Integrating new
machinery into the production area
inevitably places fresh demands on the
extraction systems. In 2023, Ian Rayner,
UK Sales Manager for dust extraction
specialist Extractly Ltd, was invited to
assess requirements for upgrading
Externally-sited 75kW

the extraction system at
Premier Forest’s three-acre
manufacturing site in
Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
– formerly Merlwood Timber.
In addition to supplying a
wide range of sawn timber
products to landscapers and
builders, Premier Forest’s
substantial machinery
investments have expanded
capacity to include the production
of hardwood and softwood
mouldings and claddings.
SIGNIFICANT
EFFICIENCY GAINS
Extractly Ltd, the master UK
distributor and installer of the
globally proven Ecogate ® ‘ondemand’
extraction technology,
identified an opportunity for
Premier Forest to benefit from
significant efficiency gains.
“With the addition of new
machinery and increased
production, dust and wood
waste extraction capacity
was being pushed to its
limits at the Haverfordwest
site,” explains Ian Rayner.
Although the existing filter
unit had reached capacity,
it remained serviceable.
Extractly’s brief was to design
and install a new ductwork
system throughout the factory
to efficiently service the upgraded
and reorganised production lines,
while also providing an option to
incorporate Ecogate ® technology.
“With an Ecogate ® extractionon-demand
system, instead
of running at full speed all
day, every day, fan speed is
automatically reduced whenever
machines are idle,” says Ian. “In most
woodworking factories, fan usage can
typically be reduced by at least 20%.”
Due to the laws of physics, a 20%
reduction in fan speed equates to
a 50% reduction in electricity usage.
With Ecogate ® controlling a powerful
55kW main fan at Haverfordwest,
40,000m³/hr ATEX 4+1

incorporates 326m2 of
PNF filter sleeve media
the resulting energy savings quickly become
substantial. Reduced operating hours also
mean lower maintenance requirements
and extended fan life.

isolation valve, as recommended
by ATEX guidelines, and a ‘bullet’
magnet removes any metal
contaminant from the wood waste
The Ecogate ® system is programmable
to start extraction automatically at the
beginning of the day, run filter cleaning
cycles at optimal times, and shut down
safely at day’s end. Improved efficiency,
reduced fan speeds and better cleaning
cycles extend the life of the filter media.
Another noticeable benefit has been
lower noise levels throughout the factory.
The filter unit is currently housed in a
separate building below the main production
area – a factor that originally required
a high-powered fan. When the filter unit
is eventually replaced, relocating it closer
to the factory floor will allow for a smaller,
more cost-effective fan and an even quieter
working environment.
To ensure that all Premier Forest LEV
systems remain compliant with HSE HSG258
guidelines and COSHH regulations, Extractly
Ltd has also been commissioned to review
and service extraction systems across the
company’s multiple manufacturing sites.
Extractly’s experienced engineers now
conduct scheduled LEV testing and
routine maintenance.

Cornwall, Extractly supplied
and installed a new extraction
system featuring a 10,500m³/
hr ATEX filter unit – first
seen at the 2024 Materials
& Finishes Show – alongside
an 18.5kW main fan, full
ductwork and an ATEX
non-return explosion valve.
Most recently, Extractly
completed a comprehensive
new extraction system for
Decorpanel, Premier Forest’s
panel-processing division
at Newport. This branch
offers extensive processing
services – from cutting, drilling,
routing and edging, to laminating,
veneering, painting and lacquering.

The Newport system features a 75kW
externally mounted ‘clean side’ fan,
capable of drawing up to 40,000m³/hr
of air into an ATEX 4+1 chain filter unit.
Waste material is discharged via a rotary
valve and a 15kW fan transports the
collected dust and shavings to a dual-trailer
storage system with automated diverters.
Internally, Extractly installed Nordfab
Quick-Fit ducting, a non-return explosion
valve and additional safety features,
including a spark detection system and
a steel bullet magnet.
As with the Haverfordwest site and
other Decorpanel operations in North
East England, Ecogate ® on-demand
technology was again installed to manage
the system. Each machine sends a signal
to a greenBOX Nxt controller, which in
turn instructs the Ecogate ® PowerMaster
Variable Speed Drive to adjust fan speed
in real time to match extraction demand.
“At Premier Forest Products, we take
site safety very seriously,” affirms Gareth
Howells, Health & Safety Manager. “From
my experience with Extractly’s design and
installation teams, I’m confident that our
dust extraction systems are of the highest
standard, delivering safe, clean
environments for our employees.”

Speed & precision: Western Joinery transforms
fire door manufacturing with Essepigi
Nestled in the scenic town of Ennis, County Clare, Western Joinery has long been a respected name in bespoke joinery
and door manufacturing
Having set out to dramatically
increase the company’s fire
doorset production, Western
Joinery directors, Dave Burke
and Paudie O’Callaghan,
quickly realised that their existing setup
– based on standard pod and rail CNC
machines – couldn’t deliver the required
throughput or efficiency. As such, the
logical next step was to start looking at
viable solutions to solve this problem.
“We were producing good quality
doors, but the volume just wasn’t there,”
Dave explains. “We needed to scale up
fast without compromising on quality.”
After evaluating machinery from several
suppliers, Western Joinery found that
most options were simply variations of
what they already had – until they came
across the Essepigi Doormatic at a trade
show. This throughfeed door production
system stood out immediately owing
to its speed, automation and versatility.
With fully automated setup between
jobs and the capability to handle every
aspect of door machining – including
squaring, splayed edges, 3-point locks,
hinges, drop seals, top closers,
letterplates, window cut-outs and
spyholes – the Doormatic offered
a complete solution.
A visit to the Essepigi factory in Fano,
Italy, sealed the deal. Watching the
Doormatic handle a variety of firerated
doors with remarkable speed
and precision convinced both directors
that they’d found the right fit, and as
Paudie confirms: “It was unlike anything
we’d seen. The speed, the automation,
the flexibility – it ticked every box. We
placed an order straight after the demo.”
However, once production ramped up,
a new bottleneck appeared: the existing
frame production process couldn’t keep
pace with the door line. Once again,
Essepigi had the answer. The Horizon Plus,
a fully automatic frame machining centre
with an integrated loader, twin saws for
straight or mitre cuts, end drilling, a CNC
milling head and a secondary pilot-hole
drilling head, fit seamlessly into Western
Joinery’s workflow.

“Adding the Horizon Plus was essential,”
Paudie notes. “It completed the workflow
and eliminated the bottleneck.”
Since installation, the results have been
outstanding. “Thousands of fire-rated
doorsets have already been delivered
across Ireland,” Dave reports. “Without a
doubt, this has been the best investment
we’ve ever made.”
Paul Parker, Sales Director at JJ Smith,
who supplied the equipment, reflects on
the success of this collaboration: “Western
Joinery had a clear vision to dramatically
increase output without sacrificing quality.
With the Essepigi Doormatic and Horizon
Plus, we delivered exactly that. It’s really
rewarding to see a forward-thinking
company achieve such rapid success
with the right technology.”
With increased capacity, streamlined
operations and a rapidly expanding
nationwide customer base, Western
Joinery is now firmly positioned as one
of Ireland’s most agile and capable fire
doorset manufacturers.

Driving efficiency: Browns 2000 invests in advanced
HOMAG storage & cutting technology
For more than 40 years, Browns 2000 has been at the forefront of manufacturing made-to-measure doors and glass
splashbacks for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms
From its 350,000sq.ft facility in
Northumberland, the family-owned
business produces over 25,000 doors
and glass splashbacks each week.
Committed to continuous
investment in cutting-edge technology,
Browns 2000 recently took a significant step
forward by integrating a HOMAG STORETEQ
& SAWTEQ Cell into its production line.
The STORETEQ features
a gantry frame with
moveable lifting device,
which is capable of feeding
single or multiple machines
THE NEED FOR INCREASED
AUTOMATION & EFFICIENCY
Among its wide range of products,
Browns 2000 manufactures Glacier, a
laser edgebanded product that’s entirely
processed in-house, including board
lamination, cutting and further processing.
As demand for this product grew, the
company sought to enhance production
efficiency and flexibility while maintaining
the high quality it’s known for.
“We wanted to increase our capacity for
producing Glacier while also gaining all the
benefits that come with a HOMAG machine
– quality, accuracy and efficiency,” explains
Graeme Brown, Sales Executive at Browns
2000. “Previously, everything was processed
on a beam saw. This new investment was
a shift towards automation and a greater
degree of flexibility.”
WHY HOMAG?
Having worked with HOMAG for years,
Browns 2000 turned to them first when
considering this latest investment, as
Graeme confirms: “They were our primary
port of call, without question. HOMAG is
a global leader in this type of machinery
and yet, the service you get is what you’d
expect from a smaller firm.
“It’s that personal, one-to-one relationship
that really goes such a long way. From Alan
Betteridge in sales to the engineers who
visited our site, everyone has been a
pleasure to deal with.”
With Alan Betteridge’s support, Browns
HOMAG’s STORETEQ & SAWTEQ
Cell comprises a STORETEQ P-300
single-axis storage and retrieval
system that feeds a SAWTEQ S-320
panel-dividing beam saw, all
powered by woodStore 8 software
2000 selected the ideal solution: HOMAG’s
STORETEQ & SAWTEQ Cell, comprising a
STORETEQ P-300 single-axis storage and
retrieval system that feeds a SAWTEQ S-320
flexTec panel dividing saw, all powered
by woodStore 8 software.
STORETEQ & SAWTEQ: A POWERFUL DUO
The STORETEQ & SAWTEQ Cell is engineered
to increase production efficiency, maximise
layout flexibility and eliminate board
damage. It manages board storage and
provides a just-in-time feed to the machine,
all within a compact footprint.
The STORETEQ features a gantry frame
with moveable lifting device, which is capable
of feeding single or multiple machines.
Its lifting unit uses a crossbeam with suction
cups to handle boards up to 250kg,
rotating them up to 90°, which ensures
optimal material alignment.
To gain first-hand insight, Browns 2000
visited HOMAG’s facilities in Germany,
as Graeme recalls: “Seeing the Cell in
action was breathtaking. The robotics
are so advanced; they don’t move like
typical machines that stop and start.
Instead, they flow seamlessly, almost
human-like. And the speed is incredible.”
A SEAMLESS INSTALLATION PROCESS
Despite the complexity of the STORETEQ &
SAWTEQ Cell, the installation went smoothly,
consistent with Browns 2000’s long-standing
experience with HOMAG. “In all the years
we’ve worked with them, installation has
never been a concern. There’s protocols
in place to ensure a seamless process
and any challenges are tackled together.
Everything just flows from start to finish.”
BOOSTING PRODUCTION & ELIMINATING
BOTTLENECKS
Since installing the STORETEQ & SAWTEQ
Cell, Browns 2000 has seen a substantial
improvement in production efficiency,
and according to Graeme: “It’s delivered
on all that we were expecting, and more.
We’ve been running the new Cell for a few
months now and haven’t encountered any
disruptions or bottlenecks in production.
“With Glacier, we start by laminating the
boards in-house. Using HOMAG software,
we create nests and cut the boards into
components – and that’s where these
machines come in. The components are
then immediately loaded onto our laser
edgebander and finished using the latest
laser edgebanding technology.
“In other words, this Cell sits at the heart
of our production line. If we didn’t have the
speed or reliability there, it would create
serious issues – but thanks to the Cell,
we’ve been able to increase our output
across the board,” Graeme enthuses.
LOOKING AHEAD
Browns 2000 remains committed to

FRIES Group optimises
space with custom OHRA
storage platform
FRIES, one of Germany’s leading wholesalers of wood
and floor coverings, has literally taken logistics at its
Kiel headquarters to a new level
Founded in 1959, FRIES is one of
Germany's leading wholesalers of
wood and flooring. With over 600
employees, it supports tradespeople
in their sales to end customers
By installing a storage platform,
the company can now fully
utilise the hall’s ceiling height.
The new installation created an
additional 270sq.m of usable
space on a second level at a height of
3.8m, where bulky pallets of insulation
material are now stored in blocks. This
expansion has also made room for a new
work area, thus eliminating the need to
construct an additional hall.
Each pallet of insulation material
measures 2.4m high with a volume of
3.5m³, which poses a logistical challenge
– not because of its weight, but its
dimensions. Previously, FRIES stored the
pallets on a cantilever racking system
designed for 2m panels, which significantly
limited storage capacity. In addition, the
racks were located under an open-sided
roof, providing only limited protection
from the elements.
To optimise space and improve storage
conditions, FRIES decided to add a second
level to the existing hall. A storage
platform offered a cost-effective and
flexible solution.
The freestanding steel structure can be
easily adapted to on-site requirements.
As FRIES had already equipped a
significant portion of the warehouse with
OHRA shelving and was highly satisfied
with its robustness, the company once
again commissioned the Kerpen-based
specialist for heavy-duty racking systems
to supply and install the new platform.
OHRA designed a custom storage
platform tailored to the hall’s specific
requirements, including payload capacity,
stair positioning, along with the goods
transfer point.
The platform measures 33.8 × 8m and
can handle 1,000kg per square metre
– well above the load required for the
relatively lightweight insulation pallets.
The supports are arranged in a 5 ×
4m grid, leaving a clear height of 3.5m
below the structure to create a spacious,
flexible workspace. The platform flooring
consists of chipboard panels with a
white lacquered underside, which,
combined with ample lighting and
generous headroom, ensures a pleasant
and ergonomic environment for staff
working below.
NEW WORKSPACE & EXPANDED
CAPACITY
With the new storage platform, FRIES
has taken full advantage of the hall’s
height for the first time. Previously,
work was confined to the ground level,
leaving valuable vertical space unused.
Now, the platform not only provides
additional storage capacity but also
creates a new work area, all without the
expense and disruption of constructing
a new hall. The upper level is used for
block storage of insulation materials,
while the existing cantilever racking
remains in use for items that require
individual access and are less suited to
block storage.

racking solutions, see www.ohra.co.uk.

Just the right fit: SashWise shares the truth behind
implementing integrate software from EndtoEnd IT
For those thinking of investing in window and door software, it’s important to know what to expect, and once in place,
you need to be confident of securing the necessary support, so that it works for both yourself and customers
Managing

Sashwise
Ltd, Dan

T
here’s no doubt that the right
window and door software
will help your business: it’ll
save time, money, as well
as preparing you for growth.
EndtoEnd IT has seen this time and
again when businesses choose its
integrate software. Quoting, pricing,
designing, invoicing and CRM processes
are brought together in one place, doing
away with multiple spreadsheets and
paper notes.
However, it’s important for customers
to see integrate in action, and one
such business owner who’s recently
implemented this system is Dan Johnston,
Managing Director at SashWise Ltd.
Having installed integrate across the
business, he was happy to share his
experience of what it’s really like to work
with EndtoEnd. After all, transparency
matters in the window and door industry.
SASHWISE LTD
SashWise is a specialist timber joinery
and glazing business, based in London
and established 20 years ago.
The company provides beautifully
crafted timber doors and sash windows
for homeowners and heritage properties.
Like many specialist craftspeople, Dan
and the SashWise team pride themselves
on the quality of their work and service.
“Customers come to us because they know
that we’ll meet their specific requirements,”
Dan explains.
THE NEED FOR DEDICATED
WINDOW & DOOR SOFTWARE
With a growing number of customer
enquiries and quotes, SashWise needed
a more streamlined way in which to
manage leads and track jobs.
“There’s a tipping point where growth
becomes tricky if you’re always reaching
for different folders, using multiple
spreadsheets, or relying on just one
or two people to know your processes.
So, we spoke to EndtoEnd about whether
their window and door software could help
us – and that’s where integrate came in.”
SASHWISE & INTEGRATE SOFTWARE
Initially, the company started by looking
at integrateCONNECT – which seemed to
fit the bill – but Dan then decided to add
integrateCRM and FIT. “That’s the beauty of
it: the software can cover all your business
processes, some of them, or more of them
over time,” he confirms.
At this point, Dan and the team are only
recently “over the line” with the software.
Their systems have now all been moved to
the integrate modules, and
time has been spent trying
to navigate the changes.
“You’re getting a proper
picture of what it’s like
at the beginning,”
Dan explains.
PROGRESS SO FAR
Overall, SashWise
find the software to
be user-friendly, and
importantly, it’s simplified
their work processes.
Comparing it to the last
CRM system used – which
happened to be Joinerysoft
– Dan is sure that other
companies in the window
and door industry will be
able to relate. “Previously,
we had loads of different
bits of information to fill
in for each lead or client
– half of them weren’t
relevant, but you still had
to go through the process.
”In my opinion, the
integrate program
offered by EndtoEnd IT
is more streamlined
and straightforward.
”The main benefit has been getting
the quoting system populated, so we
can automatically pull out stored pricing
information and generate the numbers
our customers – and the people in
accounts – need to see,” Dan continues.
SOFTWARE SETUP SUPPORT
Although software might be good in
theory, the real question is whether it
works in reality. It’s also inevitable – and
right – to experience hiccups as well as
needing to ask questions or get clarification.
When Dan met EndtoEnd’s Director, Gareth
O’Brien, it was obvious he understood
specialist companies like SashWise. “We
were confident the system would be
tailored for our timber manufacturing
and installation,” Dan comments.
During the onboarding process, the
support received from EndtoEnd was
exemplary. Not only were the team
quick to respond, but they were also
understanding and accommodating in
terms of being asked to tweak different
parts of the costing templates.
SashWise is a trusted
name in timber sash
and casement window
replacement and repair
across West London
“There’s never been a sense of ‘one
and done’ – it’s more like a partnership.
Customers want to get it right, and that takes
time, so they support you as promised.”
DELIVERING FEEDBACK
According to Dan, the communication has
been excellent. As mentioned, the team have
been happy to update pricing and costing
templates as things have been tweaked
during the setup.
One area of discussion involves the
email system and whether a preview pane,
similar to Outlook, can be implemented.
Another suggestion has been adding
an easy filter for viewing completed jobs.
This feedback has been welcomed, and
Dan is looking forward to seeing his ideas
incorporated. The software team deliver
regular updates, which is the benefit of
having bespoke industry software rather
than an off-the-shelf option.
A DIFFERENCE FOR CUSTOMERS
As it’s still early days, it’s unlikely that
customers will comment on the quotes
themselves, as they’re more concerned
with the service and price.
According to Dan, “In some ways, you
could say it’s impressive that we’ve had a
major system change and our customers
haven’t noticed. Everything is where it
should be. But from our side, it’s made
a noticeable difference, and I have no
doubt that it’ll also help us make the right
first impressions with new customers.”
ADVICE FOR OTHERS
In terms of giving advice to other
companies considering integrate, Dan
says that time spent getting to grips
with the software is 100% beneficial.
“Don’t be scared of it – take the plunge.”
A major piece of advice is to plan time
to dedicate from the outset. The initial
period of transferring information to
the new system, particularly quoting
and past leads, is in-depth but time
invested is entirely worth it.
ACT EARLY & IMPLEMENT NOW
Dan also advises to act now and don’t
delay: “We reached a point where we’d
grown and needed better software. Some
companies will choose integrate from the
very early days and massively benefit.”
Being in the window and door industry,
Dan had heard a lot about integrate, read
customer case studies and carried out his
homework. As he already knew what the
software was required to do, in some ways
this made it harder to tick all the boxes,
but he’s pleased to report that integrate
is doing exactly what’s needed.
Gareth O’Brien, Director at EndtoEnd,
thanked Dan for the great feedback and
commented on the positive working
relationship: “Dan’s right: at EndtoEnd,
we know our industry, and working with
our customers is like a partnership.”
Dan mentioned two common
situations that similar businesses
might find themselves in:
1. Starting out and considering
investing in software.
2. Having experienced growth
and weighing up whether
to invest ‘now’ or ‘later.’

software, visit www.endtoendit.com.

A decade in the elements: Teknos explains what 10
years of outdoor testing reveals about timber coatings
According to the Teknos experts, a decade of testing is providing rare insights into long-term coating performance
In 2015, a benchmark outdoor exposure
programme was established in Arnhem,
the Netherlands, to provide data on how
timber coatings truly perform after years
in the elements. Now, a decade later,
the results are delivering rare, real-world
evidence for Teknos, joinery manufacturers,
specifiers and the wider coatings industry.
WHY OUTDOOR TESTING MATTERS
Accelerated weather testing in laboratories
offers controlled conditions, but it can’t
fully replicate the complexity posed by
real-world exposure.
Panels were prepared according to EN
927-3, the European standard for assessing
the durability of wood coatings over one
year. They were mounted at a 45° southfacing
angle, with sharp edges included
to accelerate coating breakdown.
However, one year proved insufficient
to produce significant results. Teknos and
Accsys therefore extended the testing period
to three years, five years, and now 10.
As Steve Ashton, Technical Services
Manager at Teknos, explains: “Certain
things simply can’t be replicated in a lab.
To truly prove the performance of a coating,
hands-on testing is the only option.”
Teknos has also operated test sites for
more than 10 years in Denmark, the UK
and Malaysia to provide further climatic
perspectives.
WHAT’S BEEN TESTED
The trial included a wide range of species
and substrates: meranti, merbau, pine,
thermally modified timbers, in addition
to Accoya and Tricoya. Both translucent
and opaque coating systems were applied,
at varying film builds, to capture how
different systems performed when
faced with real-world conditions.
WHAT THE DATA SHOWS
Some findings confirmed expectations.
More dimensionally stable substrates, such
as Accoya and Tricoya, showed reduced
timber movement, placed less stress on
coatings and extended performance.
Less predictable was the impact of
care and maintenance. Regular cleaning
– even with just water and a sponge – made
a notable difference, improving both surface
appearance and long-term performance.
According to Justin Peckham, Regional
Head of Sales at Accsys: “One thing we’ve
seen consistently is that coatings last
significantly longer on Accoya and Tricoya
than on other, less stable substrates. The
more stable the timber, the less stress
the coating is under.”
WHY IT MATTERS TO THE INDUSTRY
For manufacturers, the results provide
reassurance that coating specifications
can be trusted over the long term. For
homeowners, it means better advice on
care and maintenance, potentially lowering
lifetime costs. For the wider industry, the
greatest value may be confidence: proof
that warranties and performance claims
are backed by robust, authentic data.
LOOKING AHEAD
The panels remain in the field; some will be
recoated and returned for further exposure,
extending the dataset and building an even
clearer picture of long-term performance.
As product development specialist, Alireza
Boustani, explains: “On most of the samples,
we still see very good coating performance
even after 10 years. The idea is to continue
outdoor exposure of those samples.”
10 years marks an important milestone,
but the work is far from finished. With more
timber types, coating systems and climates
still to assess, outdoor
testing will continue
to deliver lessons no
laboratory can replicate.

How West Fraser’s carbon-negative wood panels
support sustainable construction
As with any conscientious organisation, West
Fraser’s approach to sustainability is rooted in
science and guided by global standards, ensuring
that forests, products and innovation work together
to address climate change. Here, David Connacher,
West Fraser’s UK Marketing Manager, explains more

accounting in the forestry industry, West
Fraser – a global leader in sustainability –

emissions and carbon sequestration.
Looking ahead, the company is
advancing efforts to accurately and
credibly characterise its carbon story in
collaboration with industry leaders and
community partners.
Progress has already been made through
the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi),
with West Fraser validating its 2030
commitments and planning the key
steps required to establish a clear
net-zero pathway.
In 2024, the team continued its work on
a land-use carbon emissions assessment
and developed a governance framework
for a comprehensive transition plan
covering all emission scopes.
West Fraser’s carbon story begins in
the forests, where biogenic carbon is
naturally sequestered as trees grow.
Through harvesting and manufacturing,
this carbon is transferred into wood
products used in low-carbon construction
and other applications. Reforestation
restores forest cover, thus continuing
the carbon
sequestration cycle.
The harvested
wood products,
widely distributed,
act as long-term
carbon reservoirs.
Even at end-of-life,
a significant portion
of biogenic carbon
remains stored in recycled materials or
landfills, with only part released back into
the atmosphere.
