Our detailed masterplan
for the Cultural Oasis
District outlines the
roadmap for revitalizing
and renewing both the
mudbrick Old Town and
Historic Oasis.
Complementing this
plan is an agricultural
approach designed to
promote sustainable
farming practices,
empowering local
farmers to sustainably
steward the historic oasis
for generations to come.

GO GREEN
Type: BArch thesis
Year: 2020
Location: Saint - P, Russia
Size: 2,230,000 Hectares
In 2020 the competition
for the park in the
centre of the city was
announced. An important
role in the selection
of the site for design was
played by its historical
significance, as its location.
The territory is part
of the” green corridor “
of the city.
Besides, the surrounding
infrastructure will be quite
well developed in the
near future. Despite the
fact that the site is now
empty, it is potentially
attractive for tourists and
citizens.
Rain garden
In 20th century the area was
divided into two islands - Tuchkov
Buyan and Vatniy Island.
Therefore the artificial island
is named as Vatniy Island to
remind citizens about its history.

Masterplan
The territory formed in 1726
is a cluster of islands that
merged with Petrogradsky
Island. Since the beginning
of the 1890s, the islands
have been connected to the
mainland by filling channels.
In 2020, the name of the
territory was officially
approved as “Tuchkov Buyan”.
It was also recognized as a
historical district.

Roof System
A large-span self-supporting
wooden structure was used to
cover part of the underground
space. To illuminate the greenhouse,
a translucent material
ETFE - ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene
is used.

Farm cluster
All clusters are bottom-up,
farmer-led initiatives funded
by their own community trusts,
private donors, the Game and
Wildlife Conservation Trust,
and the Natural England
Facilitation Fund - this grant
requires a minimum area of
2000 hectares to encourage
the formation of clusters.
These clusters work together
to increase woodland, reduce
agricultural pollution, connect
habitats through woodland
and implement natural flood
management techniques.

ReGenesis transforms an
abandoned quarry into a
nature and community
sanctuary. Rain gardens,
greenhouses, and
wildlife zones support
biodiversity, while ecofriendly
paths and an
outdoor amphitheatre
provide spaces for
relaxation and activities.
The site features solar
power, off-grid systems,
and local materials, with
energy generated from
solar panels and kinetic
panels.

The project is rooted in
the concept of Bulgarian
shevitsa, a traditional
embroidery technique
where patterns emerge
from careful stitching. In
the same way, the master
plan weaves heritage into
the contemporary fabric
of the market.
The design introduces
cafés, administration
areas, and community
pavilions that strengthen
the civic identity of the
market. The canopy
draws on Bulgarian
ornamental traditions,
using layered timber slats
for shade, ventilation, and
depth.
