added in 1978 to house its expanding
collection.
admire its permanent collection of
significant local and international works,
Clarks Mill
Showcasing New Zealand’s flour milling legacy
In the rolling countryside of the Te Waipounamu South Island, a hidden
gem of industrial history awaits those with a passion for heritage,
engineering, and innovation.
Located just a short drive south from Ōamaru, Clarks Mill stands as a
remarkable testament to Aotearoa New Zealand’s early industrial past.
Built in the 1860s, this rare surviving example of an originally water-powered
flour mill became a key player in the region’s agricultural success. Once
a vital hub for processing locally grown wheat, Clarks Mill represents the
ingenuity and craftsmanship of the era.
Family Fun
Clarks Mill has something for everyone, including families
with children who will love the machinery demonstrations.
The peaceful setting, with views of the surrounding sweeping
countryside, makes it a great spot to relax and learn about a
fascinating chapter in New Zealand’s history. Guided tours
offer insights into the mill’s operation and its significance to
the region’s development.
Built of timber and leather, the fully restored machinery, whirrs and cranks
to life on the last Sunday of the month over Summer, offering visitors a rare
opportunity to witness the workings of an original flour mill. The authentic
sounds and smells alongside the visual feast of four-storeys of Victorian
machinery, takes visitors back in time for an unforgettable experience.
At the heart of Clarks Mill lies a beautifully preserved complex of buildings,
where you can explore the flour-making process. These buildings tell the
story of a time when flour production was essential to feeding the growing
population. This beautiful, but imposing, mill offers a not-to-be-missed
glimpse into the industrial techniques that helped New Zealand transition
into a modern agricultural powerhouse.
Experience Flour Mill operating tours at Clarks Mill
Open Thursday 10am–1pm and Sunday 1pm–3pm | Operating tours on the last Sunday of each month
Pair your visit with
Totara Estate
A visit to Clarks Mill is the perfect complement to nearby Totara Estate,
a six-minute drive north and just eight kilometres south of Ōamaru.
Totara Estate played a pivotal role in establishing New Zealand’s frozen
meat industry, and transforming the country’s agricultural landscape.
With fun-filled activities for families, including a chance to hand-feed
the heritage sheep breeds and plenty of open space for children to run
around on vast green lawns.
It makes for a great picnic spot as well – don't forget to grab an ice
cream to go with the house-made scones with jam and cream.
Feed heritage sheep breeds at Totara Estate.
Together, these two heritage sites tell a story of Aotearoa New Zealand’s
transition from small-scale farming to a world leader in meat and flour
production
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS SPRING - SUMMER 2025 - 2026
Oamaru Penguins uncovered:
Experience hands-on conservation
with the new discovery centre
Looking for a getaway that’s heartwarming and
unforgettable? Trade the hustle of everyday life for the
charm of Ōamaru’s coast, where the world’s smallest
kororā (penguins), will capture your heart.
Ōamaru Penguins, formerly known as Ōamaru Blue
Penguin Colony, have long been a highlight of the
beautiful Waitaki region but now there’s even more
reason to visit. The newly opened interactive Discovery
Centre is a game-changer, offering a fresh, immersive
insight into the lives of these little locals. Whether
you’re a conservation enthusiast or looking for a unique
experience, this is one stop that deserves a place on your
itinerary.
Step inside the interactive Discovery Centre and you’ll
find yourself in a penguin’s paradise. Designed to bring
the science of penguin conservation to life, the centre is
kitted out with engaging exhibits and visuals to amaze
and inspire adults and children alike.
Build your own penguin using the Centre’s advanced
technology, give it a quirky name and release it onto a
huge screen, watching as it swims around before your
eyes. Get to know the cheeky personalities that call the
colony home with the Centre’s playful Flippr feature (a
clever twist on the dating app Tinder). Swipe left or right
through penguin profiles, based on real data, complete
with fun facts and personality traits to discover which
feathered friend stands out to you.
Once you’ve explored penguin life, step into the
Research HQ, where behind-the-scenes displays reveal
what it’s like to be a penguin scientist for a day. Meet the
passionate team of researchers and scientists who care
for Ōamaru’s little penguins while leading the colony’s
vital conservation efforts. Since 1993, the team has
carried out weekly monitoring of every nest, recording
microchip data, egg counts, and chick development to
build a comprehensive penguin database for visitors to
marvel at. Their work extends beyond the shoreline too,
using data loggers to track foraging behaviour, diving
depths, and time spent at sea. These insights help the
team understand breeding success, survival rates, and
the impact of environmental change, ensuring the colony
continues to thrive for generations.
While the Discovery Centre is a daytime delight, it’s
the evening viewings that steal the show. As the sun dips
below the horizon, visitors gather along the shoreline,
rugged up against the coastal breeze, waiting for the
town’s smallest residents. Guided by expert penguin
specialists, you’ll witness the nightly ritual of little
penguins waddling ashore as they return from a busy day
of fishing at sea.
To make the most of your visit, arrive early and explore
the Discovery Centre before the evening spectacle. It’s
a meaningful way to connect with the colony and the
science that protects it.
And if you find yourself smitten with these tiny
seabirds, there’s a way to take your connection even
further. Support the colony’s conservation programme
by adopting your very own penguin. You’ll receive a
personalised information pack, complete with a photo
and details about your penguin’s life and breeding
behaviour.
Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or adding a
wildlife twist to your Waitaki itinerary, Ōamaru Penguins
delivers an experience that’s both educational and
enchanting. Come for the penguins, stay for the stories,
and leave with a newfound appreciation for one of New
Zealand’s most treasured native species.
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS SPRING - SUMMER 2025 - 2026 MOERAKI - WAIMATE | 11
Waimate’s Tame Wallabies
While visiting Waimate, you must visit
the town’s famous Tame Wallaby Park
Sanctuary.
Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has dedicated
48 years to hand raising and caring
for orphan baby wallabies through to
adulthood, mostly brought to her by
hunters.
This requires much commitment as they
need constant warmth and food.
Gwen loves them all as much today as
she did when she got her first one all those
years ago. As visitors meander among
tame wallabies at their own pace, hand
feeding them special pellets, they are
fascinated by the animal’s gentle nature,
thus allowing you hassle-free time to feel
Moeraki magic
Best known for the mysterious Moeraki
Boulders, a collection of huge spherical
stones dotted along Koekohe Beach, the
seaside village of Moeraki offers a whole
lot more than just a photo opportunity
and the summer is the perfect time to visit
thanks to the long days, calm seas, and
relaxed coastal vibe.
Of course, a visit to the ancient boulders
when the tide is out is a must.
While they look impressive at any
time of day, the Moeraki Boulders are
particularly stunning in the early morning
and during golden hour. After getting a
look, and some snaps, of the boulders
take on a scenic walk around the Moeraki
Peninsula where you might be lucky
enough to spot some of the local wildlife
that call the area home, including fur seals
and little blue penguins.
If all that walking and exploring has
built up an appetite, make sure you visit
one of the local eateries where you can
tuck into fresh seafood, including blue
cod and green-lipped mussels, all washed
down with a glass of wine, or make the
most of the casual vibe in Moeraki and
grab yourself some fish and chips to eat
with the sea breeze in your face and your
feet in the sand. And be sure to finish off
your meal with an ice cream and walk
along the beach to soak up the sun.
If you’re looking for a break to
remember, without the crowds, then a trip
to Moeraki is a must this summer.
at one with nature.
The park is located off Highway 82, at
71 Bathgates Road Waimate. Watch out
for the Wallaby Park sign and don’t forget
your camera!
a heated swimming pool, event centre and
a Tame Wallaby Park – plenty to keep the
family entertained.
Camp in our beautiful parks – Knottingley
Park & Arboretum and Victoria Park – to stay
in a tranquil setting close to town. Or head
to Lakes Waitaki and Aviemore for a lakeside
spot that’s hard to beat. Revel in birdsong
at Kelceys Bush Holiday Park or take a large
group to Gunns Bush Camp. Enjoy the sea
air at St Andrews Recreation Reserve or head
to Glenavy’s Waitaki River Motor Camp for a
fishing trip.
Hit The Trails
Mountain bikers and keen walkers love our
routes to and from the White Horse Monument
high up on the hill behind town. With riverside
rambles, native bush walks and challenging
stage one (a 13km stretch) of a planned 67km
loop, The Waimate Trail, is due to open by
Christmas linking Waimate with the Waihao
Forks Hotel.
Be A History Buff
One of the first things you’ll do in Waimate is
marvel at the murals on the towering grain
silos that tell our town’s story. Waimate is
steeped in history with wide Edwardian
streetscapes. The 1906 Quinn’s Arcade has
its grand re-opening in November – sure to
attract visitors from far and wide. Learn the
history of the early settlers with a self-guided
tour of the old cemetery, visit our museum and
archives and step back in time at Bushtown.
Play Golf & Disc Golf
Maungati. We are also a hotspot for disc golf
with the 18-basket course in Knottingley Park
& Arboretum set to host
the NZ National Disc Golf
Championships in March 2026.
Nine-basket courses at Victoria
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS SPRING - SUMMER 2025 - 2026 CLYDE - ALEXANDRA | 15
Small town, big personality
Offering a blend of rich gold
rush history, stunning scenic
landscapes, and modern-day
leisure activities, Clyde is the
perfect spot for anyone keen
to explore a quieter, more
laid-back corner of the South
Island.
Clyde grew up around the
former settlement of Dunstan
during the 1860s gold rush
and once held the title of
most populous town in the
whole of New Zealand.
More than a century and a
half later, things are a little
quieter in Clyde, but visitors
can still connect to its fascinating past
through the town’s well-preserved stone
buildings. Grab yourself an ice-cream or
a locally brewed coffee and spend some
time walking through the town’s charming
old-time streets.
You can explore Clyde’s gold mining
past with a trip to the local museum,
or head out to the nearby gold mining
sites, where you can walk in the footsteps
of the early prospectors and witness
the remnants of their once-thriving
operations.
Clyde has some of New Zealand’s
best weather, so make the most of the
long sunny days by tackling one of the
numerous cycle tracks, including the
Central Otago Rail Trail, which begins or
ends here, and is one of most popular
cycling routes in the country. Meanwhile,
the nearby Lake Dunstan, offers waterskiing,
boating, canoeing, jet boating, and
boat cruises to get an up-close look at the
abundance of local wildlife.
Whether your summer plans involve
packing in as many activities as you can,
or simply slowing down and soaking in
the scenery with a delicious glass of Pinot
Noir, Clyde has got you covered.
A golden past
and a bright today
Alexandra may be small but it’s full of
heart. Once there, you’ll find friendly
locals, family-run businesses, and a laidback
vibe that will make you feel right at
home. With its historic charm, big open
skies, and sundrenched landscapes,
Alexandra is the perfect place to spend
some time this summer.
These days, Alexandra is the
quintessential small Kiwi town, but back
in the late 1880s it was a hotspot for
miners and gold-rushers hoping to strike
it rich. Although the Clutha River has long
run out of its precious gold, you can still
walk or cycle along the same track as the
original miners did on the Clutha Gold
Cycling and Walking Trail – a perfect way
to spend a sunny afternoon.
If you’re hoping for an active break,
check out the Otago Central Rail Trail
where you can enjoy short scenic walks, or
rides, with breathtaking views along the
way, or head down to on Manorburn Dam
where you can cool off with a refreshing
swim.
It goes without saying that no trip to
Central Otago would be complete without
a visit to the Pinot Noir vineyards, and
you’ll find several in Alexandra.
After a long day of walking or cycling,
head into the heart of the town where
you’ll find warm hospitality, delicious
regional wines, and hearty local cuisine,
the ideal way to relax and unwind.
Whether you’re passing through or
staying for a while Alexandra is the sort
of place that will stay with you for a long
time.
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS SPRING - SUMMER 2025 - 2026
Where the city
meets the sea...
Stories of New Zealand’s Castle
Nestled on the beautiful Otago Peninsula,
Larnach Castle is more than a historic
landmark. It’s a living place, shaped by
generations of people who have lived,
cared for, and visited here.
To bring our stories to life, our Larnach
Castle Guided Tour is now open to
everyone and is available daily. Led
by passionate guides, the guided tour
reveals the fascinating tales of the
William Larnach, Castle architecture and
craftsmanship and the restoration journey.
This 60-minute guided tour is a deeper
look into the legacy of one of
New Zealand’s most intriguing landmarks.
Of course, no visit is complete without
time in the award-winning gardens.
A Garden of International Significance,
the grounds are a delight in any season
– a place to wander, discover botanical
treasures, and take in panoramic views
across the harbour and peninsula.
Whether you’re seeking to learn more
about the history and architecture, or
simply a beautiful place to pause, Larnach
Castle offers something truly special.
LARNACH CASTLE GUIDED TOUR
Available daily, pre-bookings are essential.
If you’re looking for a
summer escape with a
quirky twist, then Dunedin
has got you covered, with
its rich heritage, vibrant art
scene, and stunning coastal
beauty.
While Dunedin is a
fantastic place to visit yearround,
it really comes alive
in the summer. Wander the
sun-soaked streets and take
in the Victorian architecture,
stop at one of the many
cafes and eateries to grab a
bite to eat, and discover the
hidden laneways crammed
with boutique shops and
cool street art.
Of course, no summer break to
Dunedin would be complete without
visiting one of the city’s beaches –
surfers can head to St Clair to ride the
waves, or you can get away from the
hustle and bustle at Sandfly Bay or
Tunnel Beach.
Nature lovers will feel right at home in
Dunedin, as the nearby Otago Peninsular
is a real haven for rare wildlife, including
The Royal Albatross Centre, nestled at
the tip of the Otago Peninsula at Taiaroa
Head, Ōtepoti Dunedin is home to the
only mainland colony of Northern Royal
Albatross.
At the centre visitors can experience
guided tours to the observatory, which
overlooks part of Albatross nesting area.
During the tour your guide will tell
you fascinating information about the
headland and the Albatross, while you’re
viewing the Albatross in their natural
breeding ground. The three metre
wingspan of the Northern Royals is
albatross, hoiho, seals and little blue
penguins, all with a backdrop of golden
beaches and dramatic coastal cliffs.
Dunedin is a true city of contrasts
– where Scottish heritage meets
contemporary street art, where grand
Victorian buildings overlook wild
beaches, and where you can spot an
albatross while out surfing, it’s even
got its own castle. In short, it’s got
something for everyone.
A wildlife tour steeped in history
surely impressive and best viewed whilst
albatross fly and socialise.
Hidden beneath the albatross colony
is Fort Taiaroa established in the 1880’s
to counter the perceived Russian threat.
As part of the Unique Tour, your guide
will walk you through the original
underground tunnels to see the fully
restored Armstrong Disappearing Gun
and learn about the human history of the
headland.
The centre includes galleries, giftshop,
café and viewing platforms for all to
enjoy.
