Pictures by
Numbers
American artist Trey Speegle creates his art
from paint-by-number paintings, completely
transforming them to suit his vision.

You might remember paint-by-number
pictures from your childhood. In the 1950s,
this phenomenon spread across the world
from the US, Canada and UK. Now, they
serve as inspiration for American artist
Trey Speegle’s own art. He uses original
vintage kits and gives them his personal
twist. He has approximately 3,000 of them
in his studio in Jeffersonville, New York:
landscapes, seascapes, ballerinas,
cowboys, horses, dogs, cats—you name
it, he has one. So, he’ll be able to keep
going for quite some time.
Speegle puts them through his own
filter by first digitally adjusting the drawing
lines, then choosing a new color palette
and manually filling in the sections with
wall paint. He then often adds a message
to the viewer; sometimes good advice,
sometimes politically charged, such as
the word ‘grab’ superimposed on a
drawing of a cat, referencing a Trump
quote. Or: ‘It’s not my fault’, because
the artist thinks many people nowadays
don’t take enough responsibility. What
should we call Speegle’s work? Pop
conceptualism, he says.
