and zest for life.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that your
energy isn’t quite what it used to
be. Your sleep feels lighter, your
mood fluctuates more, and your
drive – both in life and in the bedroom
– has dropped slightly. It
happens to many men in midlife,
and it’s rarely just about stress
or a busy schedule. The body is
changing, and what’s known as
andropause – the male equivalent
of menopause – gradually begins
to make itself felt.
While women’s menopause often
comes suddenly, men’s hormonal
transition tends to happen
much more slowly. Testosterone,
the male sex hormone, declines
little by little. It’s the hormone
that gives strength, energy, drive
and vitality – and it also plays an
important role in bones, muscles,
the heart and the brain. When
levels drop, many start to feel
heavier in the body, less focused,
and perhaps a bit “flat” in spirit.
Your body is trying to tell you
something
It’s perfectly natural for hormones
to change with age. The speed of
this change, however, depends
a great deal on lifestyle. Men
who stay active, eat healthily,
and get proper rest and sleep
often experience a gentler transition.
Genetics also play a part.
Conversely, inactivity, excess
weight, alcohol and stress can
accelerate the process.
Stress plays a special role. When
the body produces high levels of
the stress hormone cortisol for
extended periods, testosterone
production is inhibited – making
symptoms more noticeable:
fatigue, reduced libido, poor
sleep, and mood swings. It’s the
body’s way of signalling that
it needs rest, balance, and an
acceptance of life’s natural flow.
It’s not just about hormones
There’s more to it than testosterone
alone. A substance in the
blood called SHBG increases with
age and binds part of the testosterone,
leaving less of it free
and active. At the same time, the
hormone prolactin – which is normally
kept in check by the neurotransmitter
dopamine – can start
to rise under stress or imbalance.
This can further reduce energy
and affect mood and sex drive.

The good news is that there’s
much you can do to support
your body through this phase of
life. Physical activity – especially
strength training and walks in the
fresh air – naturally stimulates
testosterone. Sleep and regular
meals help stabilise blood sugar
and lower stress hormones.
