BUTTON DOWN

LORAN SMITH: ON GUNNER STOCKTON

Gunner Stockton, a 6-1, 215 lb. quarterback from Tiger is

a small-town boy with big-time dreams. As a redshirt junior,

he has already reached one of his goals—to be the starting

quarterback for the University of Georgia.

There is respect and humility prominent in his makeup,

which is easily noted when he says that playing high school

football was one of his greatest accomplishments: “I loved

playing with all the friends I grew up with. It was amazing to

play in a community that loves football.” Growing up with an

ear cocked to the music of Jason Aldean, he is a big fan of

country music, drives a pickup truck and owns a growing

herd of cattle.

With a degree in sports management (“A degree from

UGA is very, very special,” he says.), his options are

considerable but right now he could not be any happier.

In addition to football, he loves golf but comes with this

disclaimer, “if I am playing well.”: he loves Tex-Mex food

and says that his pet boxer, named “Moose” would “make

anybody’s day.”; the sports figure he would most like to

meet is Michael Jordan; “Because he is the G-O-A-T.”

EDITOR IN CHIEF

StarkVegas came up all 777s, now ‘It’s Time to Bulldog Bevo!’ in Sanford!

The roadie to Starkville was just what the doctor ordered for

both the Bulldog Nation and 2025 Georgia Bulldogs team.

Some fortunate Georgia fans enjoyed world class golf at Old

Waverly Golf Club and Mossy Oak , while all Red and Black

fans experienced some of the best hospitality in the SEC. I’ve written it

before in this space … a road trip to Starkville is a must, if you enjoy a

fun environment and some of the nicest folks around.

On the field in Starkville, our Dawgs put on a clinic after first allowing

an opening touchdown to the home team. 35 points straight and the

game was basically over, which was a delight for all Georgia fans that

have endured a ton of thrillers this season.

How ’Bout Them Dawgs … Georgia 41 Mississippi State 21!

Now all eyes turn to Athens this week as the Texas Longhorns arrive

with everything on the line (for both teams). Like the nice folks in

Starkville, Georgia fans are also very hospitable, so let me be one of the

first to welcome all Texas fans to the best college town in America. We

hope you will find it as charming as we do … welcome!

However, the niceties will have to come to an end when toe meets

leather at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. As our cover says …‘It’s Time to

Bulldog Bevo!’ When BI’s Rob Saye captured this terrific photo of Uga

XI a few weeks back, I immediately decided it must be our cover for the

Texas game. After all, who can forget when Texas’ mascot, Bevo, tried to

dust it up with Uga X a few years back at the Sugar Bowl.

So here we go … two of college football’s most storied programs

with both having two of the most elite mascots squaring it off

Between the Hedges. Man, this is going to be a whole lot of fun.

This issue of BI will certainly get you ready …

Beyond our normal sports coverage, both Jeff Dantzler (page 10)

and Loran Smith (page 24) are waxing poetically about past battles

between the Dawgs and the Horns. Sorry Texas fans, there is a

heavy dose about the 10-9 Georgia victory in the 1984 Cotton Bowl.

Touchdown John Lastinger … point after good by Kevin Butler …

Dawgs win!

In our Social section, you are going to enjoy getting to know our

Georgia Girls participant Tina Taylor (pages 28, 29). Tina played hoops

for the Lady Dawgs back in the early 2000s and now applies the skills

she learned on the court to being a Tax Professional.

And we have a first for our Proust Q&A (page 64) this time out …

profiling the sitting governor of Georgia … Brian Kemp. What more

can you say about Governor Kemp? He’s a stand up man and Bulldog,

who proves that hard work can take anyone a very long way. Thanks

for your service and for taking the time with our interview.

Finally, enjoy our MIXTAPE featuring Brennan Cox (page 63). It’s no

surprise (for the folks that know him) that this articulate Carlyle scholar

would also include unique podcasts to his music selections. Thanks

Brennen!

Alright Georgia fans … get your work done early this week because

Athens is the place to be. See you out on the town and on the gridiron.

The mission and message is clear … ‘It’s Time to Bulldog Bevo!’ See you

in Sanford … Go Dawgs!!

It doesn’t get any better than Georgia-Texas Between the Hedges!

The Hype Machine has been full

speed ahead on this one for a

long time, as two of the most

storied programs in college

football history collide Saturday night

Between the Hedges, with the Georgia

Bulldogs hosting the Texas Longhorns.

This will be just the eighth all-time

meeting between these blue bloods, but

the third in the last two seasons.

Texas joined the Southeastern

Conference a year ago, and the Bulldogs

visited Austin for a highly anticipated

matchup. The two then had a rematch in

the SEC Championship Game.

The first time these two met was in the

1949 Orange Bowl. Led by hall of fame

head coach Wally Butts and hall of fame

quarterback Johnny Rauch, the Bulldogs

were SEC champions and 9-1 on the

season. It was Georgia’s third SEC title

of the decade, as the Bulldogs had also

captured the crown in 1942 and 1946.

The Longhorns came in with a record of

6-3-1. It was a back and forth affair, but

Texas scored the final two touchdowns

and pulled away to win 41-28.

One of the standout players for the

Longhorns that day in Miami was

talented senior running back Tom

Landry, who rushed for 117 yards and

scored a touchdown in the Longhorns

victory. For the future iconic head coach

of the Dallas Cowboys, it was his final

game as a player for Texas.

In 1957 and 1958, the Bulldogs and

Longhorns squared off. Georgia was in

a dismal state, having lost eight straight

to the Yellow Jackets in the midst of an

awful decade. It was so bad, that instead

of playing Texas in Athens, the game was

played in Atlanta in hopes of drawing

better crowds. Georgia lost. The next

season in Austin, the Bulldogs lost.

Georgia and Texas would not meet

again until playing on arguably the

greatest day in the history of college

football.

It was January 2, 1984.

A Monday.

When New Year’s Day would fall on

Sunday, college football’s biggest games

would be played on either the 31st of

December, or January 2.

In this era where the regular season

meant almost everything, and

conference champions were tied

into certain bowl games, there was a

harmonic convergence of destiny.

First things first, after Georgia beat the

Yellow Jackets to go 9-1-1 and earn the

Cotton Bowl berth, when I found out

that we had school on January 2 and the

game kicked off early in the afternoon,

I went into full fledged panic mode. My

dad assured me that I’d see the game,

he’d pick me up a little after 11:00. With

a half day, I’d get full attendance credit.

My good friend Brad Lanier got to skip

the whole day.

Texas was the Southwest Conference

champion, ranked No. 2 at 11-0, locked

into the Cotton Bowl. Mighty No. 1

Nebraska was undefeated, champions of

the Big Eight and bound for the Orange

Bowl to play once-beaten Miami. Auburn

was ranked third at 11-1, and as SEC

champion, in the Sugar Bowl, where the

Tigers played Michigan.

The twists here - Georgia (which also

tied Clemson) had lost only to Auburn.

Auburn had lost only to Texas (the day

of the 16-16 Georgia-Clemson tie).

Miami was 10-1, losing only to Florida.

The Gators, who went 9-2-1, lost only to

Georgia and Auburn.

Well you know the history of the

fumbled punt, John Lastiner’s 17-yard

scoring jaunt, Kevin Butler’s PAT, the

defensive stand and the fourth down

conversion to run out the clock. If you

don’t it was an epic ending. In fact, all of

that good stuff started to happen when

my dad had to run outside to talk with a

guy about paving our gravel driveway. I

then implored him to stay outside, not

to jinx anything, as things were finally

turning Georgia’s way in the epic 10-9

victory.

Later that night, Auburn edged

Michigan 9-7 in New Orleans, and - in

one of the all-time great college football

classics - Miami upset Nebraska 31-30 in

… Miami.

Who would be voted No. 1 the next day?

The Hurricanes jumped all the way to

the top spot, winning their first national

championship. Nebraska wound up No. 2,

losing only to Miami. Auburn, unhappy,

stayed at No. 3. Georgia was No. 4. Texas,

which lost only to the Bulldogs, was No. 5,

and for the Longhorns, they knew if they

had beaten Georgia, after what happened

in Miami, the crown would have been

theirs. Florida would be No. 6. What a day.

Three games that had a bearing on the

national title were decided by a total of

four points.

It would be another 35 years before

the Bulldogs and Longhorns played

again, with Texas beating Georgia

28-21 in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. The

Bulldogs, crestfallen from a crushing SEC

Championship Game loss to Alabama

which kept Georgia out of the College

Football Playoff, were outplayed by

upstart Texas. Lessons were learned, and

for surefire future Hall of Fame Bulldogs

Coach Kirby Smart, his Bulldogs would

then reel off seven straight bowl/CFP

victories over the next five years.

Dynasty.

Georgia played one of its best games

last season in Austin, beating the

Longhorns 30-15. In an instant classic in

Atlanta, the Bulldogs persevered 22-19

in overtime. Both would go on to make

the College Football Playoff, but It was a

game that took a lot out of both teams.

Georgia suffered significant injuries.

Now here we go again, these two

blue blood programs who have rarely

played, teeing it up for the first time ever

Between the Hedges. The ramifications

are huge. Both are still in the playoff

hunt and dreaming big. They might not

have played much, but an Orange Bowl,

a Cotton Bowl, the SEC Championship

Game, and a top ten matchup, when

these two do get together there tends

be a lot on the line. Check that box again

for Saturday night.

GEORGIA VS TEXAS

BY: JEFF DANTZLER

Two of college football’s most storied programs square off

Saturday night, as the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Texas

Longhorns. It’s a Southeastern Conference mega showdown

with major stakes for both teams.

Georgia is 8-1 on the season, 6-1 in Southeastern Conference

play. The Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 41-21 victory

at Mississippi State. Under the watch of future Hall of Fame

head coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs are now 65-6 in their

last 71 games, and 39-3 in the Bulldogs 42 most recent SEC

contests. The victory in Starkville was Georgia’s 900th all-time,

as the Bulldogs are now one of just nine major college football

programs to reach that milestone.

Texas heads to Athens with a record of 7-2, 4-1 in the SEC.

The Longhorns have posted 968 wins all-time, the fifth most in

college football annals.

Both teams have been involved in a slew of razor thin, tight

games, par for the course this season in the toughest league

in the land. The Bulldogs and Longhorns are still in the mix

for everything, and for the winner of this one, it’s a huge step

towards college football’s ultimate destination.

Texas is hunting a third straight trip to the College Football

Playoff. The Longhorns opened the season with a 14-7 loss

to Ohio State in Columbus. It was a second straight meeting

with the Buckeyes, who topped Texas 28-21 in the semifinals

of the CFP last season. The lone league loss was at Florida. The

Longhorns followed that up with their best performance of the

season, a 23-6 victory over arch-rival Oklahoma, ranked sixth

at the time, in Dallas.

That triumph over the Sooners has been followed up by three

thrilling nail-biter victories. In a low scoring affair in Lexington,

the Longhorns topped Kentucky 16-13 in overtime. In the

fourth quarter a week later in Starkville, the ‘Horns trailed

Mississippi State by 17. But Texas came back and prevailed

45-38 in an overtime shootout. Last time out, two Saturdays

ago, the Burnt Orange and White raced to a 34-10 lead over

Vanderbilt and hung on for a 34-31 victory over the then ninth

ranked Commodores.

This will be the eighth all-time meeting between the two,

with Texas leading the series 4-3. Last season, Georgia and

Texas played twice. The Bulldogs won 30-15 in Austin, then

came out on top 22-19 in overtime in one of the greatest SEC

Championship Games ever. The Longhorns took four of the

first five meetings, including a 28-21 win in the 2019 Sugar

Bowl. Georgia’s other victory came in the Cotton Bowl on

January 2, 1984.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH

BY: ANNA WILLIAMS/BI

KIRBY SMART (HC) - Kirby Smart has beaten Texas twice in his head

coaching career, and he’ll look to make it three straight when Georgia

faces the Longhorns on Saturday. Both of those wins marked milestone

moments for Smart and the program, and this matchup carries similar

weight as the Bulldogs push toward another playoff run. Georgia’s

preparation and discipline under Smart have been defining traits all

season, and his ability to manage in-game momentum could once again

be the difference. The pressure is on to uphold the momentum versus

Texas, and Smart’s track record in big-time games speaks for itself.

DILLON BELL

WIDE RECEIVER

GUNNER STOCKTON

QUARTERBACK

DILLON BELL (WR #86) - Dillon Bell continues to be one of Georgia’s

most reliable and versatile offensive weapons. Whether lining up wide

or motioning into the slot, Bell’s physicality and smooth route running

make him a consistent target for Gunner Stockton. He’s shown the

ability to win on deep balls and make contested catches in traffic – a

combination that gives this offense a steady presence on the perimeter.

Against a Texas secondary that has seemed to struggle with coverage

consistency this season, Bell’s ability to create separation and extend

drives could be a major factor. Expect him to be heavily involved in

Georgia’s early game plan as Stockton looks to establish rhythm through

the air.

CHAUNCEY BOWENS (RB #33) - Redshirt freshman Chauncey

Bowens continues to carve out a big role in Georgia’s rotation. He made

a strong impact last week with a four-yard touchdown run that gave

the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead over Mississippi State. Bowens runs with power

and leverage, rarely going down on first contact. His physical style

complements Nate Frazier’s explosiveness perfectly, giving Georgia a

one-two punch in the backfield that defenses have to respect. Against

a tough Texas defensive front, Bowens’ ability to grind out yards will be

essential, especially in short-yardage and red-zone situations.

GUNNER STOCKTON (QB #14) - Gunner Stockton continues to

prove why he belongs under center for Georgia. Coming off a strong

performance against Mississippi State – three touchdown passes to

three different receivers – Stockton appears poised and confident

heading into a game that already carries personal history. The last time

Georgia faced Texas, Stockton came off the bench in the 2024 SEC

Championship after Carson Beck went down with an injury. All he did

was lead the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime win, sealing one of the most

memorable comebacks in recent program history. Now as the full-time

starter, Stockton will look to replicate that same calm under pressure

in Saturday’s game. His leadership and ability to spread the ball around

will be key in testing Texas’ secondary and setting the tone for Georgia’s

offense.

BY JEFF DANTZLER

In Georgia’s 10-9 victory over Texas in the Cotton

Bowl on January 2, 1984, John Lastinger scored

the lone touchdown of the game, and Kevin Butler

delivered the point after.

Georgia defeated Texas 30-15 in Austin in 2024,

with Butkus Award winning linebacker Jalon Walker

recording three sacks, a fumble recovery and seven

quarterback pressures.

Led by legendary coach Manuel Diaz, the Bulldogs

defeated Texas in the finals of the 2008 NCAA

Men’s Tennis Finals, capturing the sixth national

championship in program history.

FOOTBALL

SPORTS

DAYLEN EVERETTE (DB #6) - Daylen Everette has become one of the

anchors of Georgia’s defense. The senior defensive back continues to grow

more each week, using his physicality and length to disrupt passing lanes.

Everett will have his hands full with a talented Texas receiving corps that

loves to attack vertically, but his technique and discipline give Georgia that

stability on the outside. Expect him to be tested early and often, especially

on deep shots down the sideline. If he can hold his own in one-on-one

coverage, it will free up the rest of Georgia’s secondary to be aggressive and

mix up looks against the Longhorn passing game.

RAYLEN WILSON (ILB #5) - Raylen Wilson’s speed and instincts were

on full display last week, as he led the charge in Georgia’s front seven with

six tackles. His range allows him to chase plays sideline to sideline, and his

closing burst helps shut down running lanes quickly. Against Texas, Wilson

will be critical in limiting explosive plays from both the run game and

quarterback scramble. His ability to diagnose and react in real time makes

him one of the most valuable players on this defense.

BRETT THORSON

PUNTER

BRETT THORSON (P #92) - In games where every yard matters, field

position can quietly decide the outcome – and that’s where Brett Thorson

shines. The senior punter continues to be one of Georgia’s most reliable

specialists, consistently pinning opponents deep and giving the defense

favorable situations. His precision and hang time can flip the field in a

single kick, and that could be huge in a matchup expected to be physical

and tightly contested. Thorson’s steady presence has been an underrated

strength for Georgia all season, and his ability to control field position could

once again play a key role in keeping the Bulldogs in command from start

to finish.

LONGHORNS TO WATCH

BY: MATTHEW HERREN/BI

STEVE SARKISIAN (HC) - Coach Sarkisian has been with the

Longhorns since 2021 and has brought life back to a program that had

been searching for success. Sark has brought in high-profile talent and

taken Texas to the College Football Playoff the last two seasons. His

team sits just outside of the current playoff picture, but a win against

Smart and the Bulldogs would boost their chances at a third straight

appearance.

ARCH MANNING (QB #16) - Manning entered the 2025 season with

some of the highest expectations for a player in college football history

after being named this year’s starting quarterback for the Longhorns.

With poor showings early in the season in losses to Ohio State and

Florida, Manning has shaped into a solid quarterback for Texas. In his

STEVE SARKISIAN

HEAD COACH

last four games, he has thrown seven touchdowns and one interception

to lead the Longhorns back into the College Football Playoff

conversation. The Bulldogs were in Manning’s final six schools during

the recruitment process, so look for him to continue his recent success

and show Georgia what they missed out on under center.

QUINTREVION WISNER (RB #5) - The junior running back has

missed time this season due to injury, but has been an efficient piece of

the Longhorns offense when healthy. He leads the team with 88 carries

and 338 rushing yards. While Georgia’s defense is one of the toughest

in the nation to run against, Wisner will need to get going on the road

for Texas to establish an offense.

RYAN WINGO (WR #1) - Wingo has been the Longhorn’s most

effective wide receiver with 593 yards and five touchdowns on the

season. The sophomore can be an explosive playmaker, averaging 19.1

yards per catch. This matchup will provide him with chances to be a

ARCH MANNING

QUARTERBACK

dagger against a vulnerable Georgia secondary. Look for Wingo to

make some explosive plays when the offense needs it most.

BY JEFF DANTZLER

When it comes to Texas Longhorns football legends,

Earl Campbell is at the top of the list, as “The Tyler

Rose” won the 1977 Heisman Trophy and led the

‘Horns to an 11-0 regular season.

The most decorated Texas baseball alumni ever is

“The Rocket” Roger Clemens, who won 354 major

league games, and captured a record seven Cy Young

Awards for four different teams.

PARKER LIVINGSTONE (WR #13) - This redshirt freshman has been

great for Texas this season with 351 yards and five touchdowns. His best

game this season came in a win over San Jose State where he scored twice

and had 128 receiving yards. With a lot of attention to likely go on Wingo

out wide, look for Livingstone to be a reliable target for Manning in the

passing game.

ANTHONY HILL JR. (LB #0) - Hill Jr. has been a force on the defensive

side of the ball for the Longhorns. Along with a team-high 64 tackles, he

has tallied four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. If Texas wants

to upset the Bulldogs on their home turf, Hill Jr. and the defense will need

to force Stockon and the offense into uncomfortable situations and force a

turnover or two.

COLIN SIMMONS (LB #1) - Simmons has been most effective for Texas

with his ability to bring the quarterback down, leading the Longhorns

defense with eight sacks. Though Stockton does not go down easy, he will

need to at least get pressure on the Georgia quarterback in order to throw

the offense off rhythm.

THE

Five

Georgia vs. Texas

BY: JEFF DANTZLER

1. Four Guys, Three Wins - So in Georgia’s three wins over Texas,

a total of four players have scored against the Longhorns. On

January 2, 1984, the Bulldogs upset 11-0, second-ranked Texas

10-9. John Lastinger, on an option right, went 17 yards into the

corner of the end zone for the lone touchdown of the game.

Kevin Butler, who had knocked through a field goal earlier in

the game, hit the go-ahead extra point. The victory boosted

the Bulldogs record to 10-1-1 on the year, and Georgia finished

No. 4 in the national polls. In 2024, the Bulldogs and Longhorns

met twice. Georgia won 30-15 in Austin in October. Trevor

Etienne scored three touchdowns, and Peyton Woodring made

three field goals and three extra points. In the Southeastern

Conference Championship Game rematch, Etienne scored both

Bulldog touchdowns, including the game winner in overtime,

while Woodring made three field goals and the extra point after

Etienne’s first TD (In OT, Texas had the ball first and made a field

goal, so the touchdown by Etienne ended the game with no PAT

attempt).

2. Herschel and Earl - The Greatest College Football Player

ever and one of the best running backs of all time … Herschel

Walker of Georgia and Texas’ Earl Campbell. The Goal Line Stalker

and The Tyler Rose. Two absolute legends. In the golden era

of running backs in college football in the 1970s and 1980s,

there were a slew of unforgettable runners across the country,

including Archie Griffin, Tony Dorsett, Billy Sims, George Rogers,

Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson. Herschel Walker and Earl Campbell

stand at the very top of this illustrious list. Campbell won the

1977 Heisman Trophy for the Longhorns, who went 11-0 and

were No. 1 headed to the Cotton Bowl, where they fell to Notre

Dame, costing Texas the national championship. The Bulldogs

beat the Fighting Irish for the 1980 national title, with Herschel

finishing third in the Heisman voting (behind Rogers and Pitt

defensive end Hugh Green) as a freshman. The following year,

he finished second to Marcus Allen. With a third straight SEC

championship and perfect 11-0 regular season in the books,

Herschel Walker won the 1982 Heisman Trophy, finishing ahead

of John Elway and Eric Dickerson. I’ll contend always that’s the

strongest Heisman finalist trio of all time.

3. Athens and Austin - America’s Greatest College Town, Athens,

GA will be electric all week long with the Longhorns and Bulldogs

squaring off Saturday night. Austin is a great place as well, but

it’s become a big city. Both are famous for their great universities

and football programs. Both are loaded with great restaurants.

Both have vibrant nightlives with tremendous music scenes. A

few pretty good golfers have also attended these two proud

universities.

4. My friend Cutts - That includes my good friend Cutts Benedict.

Cutts was a longtime golf pro in Athens and loves the Bulldogs. He

went to school and played golf at Texas and loves the Longhorns.

Cutts is our “A View From” guest this week in the BI. Amongst his

Longhorn teammates were Brandel Chamblee of the Golf Channel

and 1996 PGA Championship winner Mark Brooks. The ‘Horns may

have produced Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Brooks, Justin Leonard,

Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler, but my favorite Longhorn

golfer ever is my friend Cutts Benedict. Earl Campbell and Roger

Clemens are my other favorite Texas legends.

5. Car with no driver - So my good friend David Johnston

and I were going to Terry Black’s Bar-B-Que (per Cutts’

recommendation) last spring when we were in Austin for

baseball. I ordered the uber, not realizing that the vehicle was

one of those driverless cars. There were about 20 of them in the

city I was told. DJ asked me “did you mean to do this?” I did not.

But we got in, and we got there. It was very strange. We both sat

in the back seat and got a phone call from the all powerful Oz

telling us to buckle our seat belts. I remember thinking, gosh,

what if there’s a Terry Black’s in Dallas and I punched that in by

mistake? Well we made it safe and sound and ate great. Then got

an uber with a driver back to the hotel.

FROM THE

Georgia returns home

from Starkville with

a 41-21 win over

Mississippi State. In what many

people across the country

considered to be a trap game,

Coach Smart and the Dawgs

passed the test and got a key

road win. For the fans, they

finally got to take a breather

and watch a game without

much stress.

There were many factors that

Georgia had to overcome this

weekend. Not only is Davis

Wade Stadium one of the most

hostile environments in college

football, but an 11 a.m. kickoff

can be tough to get up and

going for. Georgia did start the

game down 7-0, causing the

cowbells to ring down early.

However, Georgia’s ability to

dominate the trenches on both

sides of the ball was always

going to be enough in this one.

Mississippi State’s starting

quarterback Blake Shapen sat

on the bench for most of the

second half, while freshman

Kamario Taylor showed off

his dual-threat abilities with

three rushing touchdowns

at the quarterback position.

It seems to me like State has

a quarterback battle, and I

wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor is

the starter going forward.

Have a day, Nate Frazier!

The sophomore running back

had a career day with 181

rushing yards on 12 carries

and a touchdown. It felt like

it was only a matter of time

before this talented back got

going, and I’m sure this kind of

performance will be welcomed

quite often by Bobo and the

offense.

Though most focus will be

on Frazier, Gunner Stockton

had a quiet three touchdown

afternoon with 264 passing

yards. Wide receivers Zachariah

Branch and Noah Thomas

both had over 60 yards and

INTERN

PRIMETIME SHOWDOWN AWAITS!

a touchdown. If we’re being

honest, I think we can put the

Bobo criticisms in the past and

realize that this offense can be

as good as any in the country.

Now, Georgia welcomes

Arch Manning and the Texas

Longhorns into Athens for

one of the most anticipated

matchups this season. While

many people haven’t bought

into this Texas team, they

have won five straight games

after falling to Florida in early

October. With the current

College Football Playoff format,

the teams that can get hot in the

second half of the season are in

prime position for a berth. Texas

is still considered to be a long

shot bid considering they still

have No. 3 Texas A&M looming

on their schedule, but a win

over Georgia pits them against

an Aggies team that might be

looking ahead to a date with the

Tide in the SEC Championship.

This one is shaping up to be a

classic Between the Hedges

on Saturday night, with both

teams eyeing a return to the

College Football Playoff and a

national title.

‌HOT TAKE OF THE WEEK:

Georgia’s offense under the

leadership of Gunner Stockton

has been all you can ask for. It

just seems like the group has

caught a groove over the past

few weeks, taking pressure off

the defense. The Texas defense

hasn’t exactly looked that great

the past few weeks, giving up

38 points to the Mississippi

State offense we just saw. My

hot take of the week is that

Stockton and the Bulldogs

score at least 40 points en route

to a huge victory over Sark

and the Longhorns. Look for

Stockton, Branch and Frazier to

lead the way with explosiveness

to get the Sanford crowd

rocking under the lights on

Saturday.

Cutts Benedict, my close friend, for a second straight year

is our Texas expert for A View From. Cutts was a standout

golfer for the Longhorns and went on to a highly successful

career as a teaching pro, including a quarter century of

expertise in Athens. He knows his sports, especially golf

and college football. He loves the Longhorns. He loves the

Dawgs. We are grateful for his insight.

BY JEFF DANTZLER

A VIEW OF...

Georgia vs.Texas

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF

LIFE IN THE SEC?

As a fan, it’s been fantastic.

For Texas to compete in the

greatest conference in college

athletics is so cool. And not

just in football, but all sports.

Besides playing old rivalries

like A&M and Arkansas, Texas

is slowly establishing some

history versus schools like

Kentucky, Miss State, and of

course the Georgia Dawgs!

WITH SO MUCH OF YOUR

HEART IN BOTH OF THESE

SCHOOLS, WHAT DOES THIS

GAME MEAN TO YOU?

Without any doubt, this is

THE GAME of the year for me.

Being honest, I’d love to see

Texas get a win in Athens,

but that certainly comes with

mixed emotions. We went to

every home game in Sanford

for 15+ years and I am all-in

as a big Georgia fan with the

exception of this game. That

said, my time in Austin at

UT runs deep. Gameday will

be super nerve racking, but

no matter the outcome, I’m

always a winner :)

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE

TEXAS FOOTBALL PLAYER

EVER?

Tough question. Earl

Campbell. My freshman year

at Texas was Earl’s Heisman

Trophy year. It was nothing

short of insanity. Texas started

the year unranked and

vaulted to #1 behind Earl. It

was quite the indoctrination

for me into the magnitude of

Texas football. We had some

unforgettable times that Fall,

with an unparalleled player.

WHAT DOES TEXAS NEED

TO DO TO WIN?

At the risk of sounding cliche

Texas must get off to a fast

start. Texas must win the

turnover battle. Texas has

to get some yards rushing

and stay ahead of the chains.

Manning will not survive “3rd

and longs” with the way Kirby

and Schumann disguise and

bring pressure. Texas on a

bye this week should help,

but they’ll have to play their

best game to have a shot in

Sanford.

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON

THIS GEORGIA TEAM?

Georgia looks the same as

always. On defense, they

are fast, aggressive and

well coached -- rarely out of

position. The offense looks

better every week. Gunner has

settled in nicely, he seems to

have great composure and the

moment never seems too big.

The run game has developed

with Bowens and Frazier,

which gives Coach Bobo

options downfield in the pass

game. It won’t be surprising if

we see the Dawgs in Atlanta

on December 6th.

LET’S TALK GOLF, SCOTTIE

AND ALL THESE DAWGS,

WHAT A YEAR ON TOUR.

In spite of all the surrounding

debate with the LIV Tour, the

PGA Tour had a great year in

2025. Rory completing the

career Grand Slam in April

at Augusta, and then Scottie

winning two majors on the

way to his 2nd consecutive

6-win season. On top of

everything, the Dawgs continue

their dominant presence on

Tour with Russell Henley,

Harris English, Brian Harman,

Sepp Straka, Chris Kirk, Davis

Thompson, and Keith Mitchell

all finishing in the top 75 on the

FedEx Cup points list. And the

icing on the cake, with Henley,

English and Straka making

Ryder Cup teams!

WHAT IS YOUR SCORE

PREDICTION?

31-16 Dawgs. I think the home

field will be too much for the

Horns to overcome. Sanford

Stadium at night will present

quite a challenge.

WHADDAYA GOT

LORAN

LORAN SMITH

Texas fans never forgave their coach for 10-9 in the 1984 Cotton Bowl!

Any seasoned college football aficionado with an

exposure that has no geographic limitations usually

will settle on a handful of schools which brings about

a consensus that spawns “can’t miss” appraisals.

Darrell Royal, who dominated the college scene at Texas,

always reminded young coaches that to land the best head

coaching job, you needed to make sure that “the university of”

preceded the name of the school you preferred to work for.

In other words, the best jobs were those schools that were the

state university of the state in which they are located. There are

other factors such as alumni support, plethora of talent in the

high school ranks, and tradition. Texas has always had it all.

Several years ago, once I became settled into a couple of roles

with the University of Georgia, I made a point of traveling to

other campuses in the fall when there were open dates on the

Bulldog schedule. And, of course, travel opportunities around

the country for various reasons in the spring and summer

allowed for widespread introductions.

By joining the American Football Coaches Association and

attending its annual meeting, there was an exposure to the top

coaches in college football.

I visited other campuses and interacted with the top coaches,

interviewing them and having meals and small talk with them.

Early on, I saw that it was easy to conclude that, POTENTIALLY,

Texas offered the best opportunity for extended championship

success. There were super rich alumni, an abundance of the

best talent in the high school ranks, and a fine and wellestablished

tradition. But you must hire the best coach, which

the Longhorns did with Darrell Royal.

Royal won three national championships and 11 Southwest

Conference titles in the 20 years he was the Longhorn’s

head coach. He left behind an enviable legacy and enjoyed

retirement to the fullest, playing golf with his longtime friend

Frank Broyles, the head coach and athletic director at Arkansas,

and his buddy, country music icon Willie Nelson.

An avowed country music fan, Royal was very much at home

with country stars such as Kris Kristofferson, Larry Gatlin, Charlie

Pride, Bob Wills, and, of course, Nelson.

He was admired by successful people from novelist and Hall

of Fame writer Dan Jenkins to President Lyndon B. Johnson who

eagerly offered to help Royal recruit.

This native Oklahoman was about barbecue, country music,

and fundamental football, which is why he adopted the

wishbone formation which one of his assistants, Emory Bellard,

brought to him after he learned about the formation from a

Texas high school coach.

The wishbone formation had a “three yards and a cloud of

dust” image but by recruiting to fit the system and being way

out front of the competition for years, Royal’s teams dominated

the league like one else had ever done before.

However, the Southwest Conference was known historically

for wide open football with legendary performers such as

Sammy Baugh, Bobby Lane, Doak Walker and Davey O’Brien

making national headlines.

It was Texas Christian coach, Dutch Meyer, who came up with

the modern spread formation.

With all members of the conference in its golden years being

from the state of Texas, except for Arkansas, the rivalries were

unrelentingly intense and the competition overtly fierce.

The goal was to win the conference championship and play in

the Cotton Bowl. For years the Southwest Conference champion

was the host team for the Cotton Bowl and one of the most

memorable games for the University of Georgia was the 1984

Cotton Bowl game with Texas, with the Bulldogs scoring late on a

touchdown run to upset the No. 2 ranked Longhorns, which caused

consternation among the Longhorn faithful. It lasted for years.

For the longest time, you bring up that game in Texas, and you

got a head shaking reaction with deep and abiding contempt.

It was a game Texas could not get over. Longhorn fans never

forgave the head coach, Fred Akers.

In case you have forgotten that afternoon game in Dallas

was followed by the nighttime Orange Bowl where No. 1

ranked Nebraska played Miami with the Hurricanes, upsetting

the Cornhuskers to vault into No. 1. The way Texas partisans

looked at it, had their No. 2 ranked team defeated Georgia, the

Longhorns would have become the national champs.

For three quarters the only scoring was by field goals, with

Texas making three and Georgia one, but with time running out,

Coach Vince Dooley was faced with a fourth and long situation

with less than five minutes left in the game.

Texas, thinking the Bulldogs were going to gamble with a

desperation play, left their regular defense on the field which

meant that a defensive back, Craig Curry, had to field Chip

Andrews punt. Curry was not their regular returner. He fumbled

the punt, recovered by Gary Moss, which led to one of the

greatest victories in UGA bowl history. Based on the pattern of

the game, however, Texas still had the advantage, even with the

fumble.

Georgia had not dented the Texas defense all afternoon and

soon was faced with a third down challenge. Dooley spoke to

offensive coordinator and play caller George Haffner, saying,

“Put it up and hope for the best.”

However, Haffner, now living in Belton, Texas, went with

his gut, which was to run the option. So, Charle Whitemore,

who signaled the plays to quarterback on the field, flashed

the signal for “54 Option,” which called for the quarterback to

fake a handoff to the fullback and then head down the line

of scrimmage, either keeping the ball if there were a hole or

pitching to the tailback wide.

Guy McIntyre, who, as Whittemore says, “collapsed the entire

left side of the Longhorn’s defensive line,” Lastinger sprinted

through the hole and crashed over the endzone pylon for a

touchdown and a 10-9 victory.

Several years later while on a trip to Austin, Mack Brown

hosted my family for dinner at a popular restaurant in town.

Mack told the owner of my Georgia affiliation, and a big frown

came over his face as he said in disgust, “Worse coaching job in

Texas history.” Texas fans never forgave Akers.

One of the things I have always thought was significant about

the game that with a critical situation facing Vince Dooley, he

made a conservative call for a punt when gambling was likely

going to be futile. His percentage call for a punt with time

running out, enabled Georgia to win against all odds. For the

longest time, if someone asked a Bulldog supporter the time, he

would always say, “In Dallas, it is10-9.”

playlist featured by Brennan Cox

brought to you by BULLDAWG ILLUSTRATED + LAST RESORT GRILL

In honor of Athens’ distinction as one of the best music towns in the nation and the original

Last Resort opened as a music club in 1966. Those who can still remember the tunes of such

passionate performers as the Reverend Pearly Brown, Towns Van Zandt, Doc Watson, Jimmy

Buffett, and even Steve Martin may feel nostalgic at the mere mention of the club’s name.

Today that passion is found in Last Resort Grill’s menu and atmosphere, pulling directly from

the building’s eclectic history. - Compiled by: Cheri Leavy

COMPILED BY: HAMILTON CULPEPPER

NAME: Brian P. Kemp

FAMILY: Wife Marty and daughters Lucy, Jarrett, and

Amy Porter

HOMETOWN: Athens, Georgia

CURRENT TOWN: Athens, Georgia

SCHOOL/DEGREE: University of Georgia/ Agriculture

ACCOLADES: Governor of Georgia, Secretary of State,

Georgia State Senator, Chair of the Republican Governors

Association (RGA)

WHAT LIFE LESSONS DID YOU LEARN WHILE AT UGA?

Perseverance: learning how to overcome tough obstacles

and keep at a task through challenges has served me well

throughout my career as both a small business owner and

elected official.

WHAT PROFESSOR DID YOU ADMIRE MOST?

Cecil Beggs taught me a lot both in and out of the classroom. On

the weekends, he employed students in his pole barn building

business which helped me gain practical life experience.

WHO ARE YOU HEROES IN REAL LIFE?

Growing up, two men had a huge influence on my life: Billy

Henderson and Vince Dooley. Practically growing up in the Dooley

home, and then playing under Coach Henderson at Clarke Central,

those two

taught me so

much about

what it meant to

work hard and not

take things in life for

granted.

QUOTE TO

LIVE BY:

“Tough times don’t last; tough people do”

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS?

The Dawgs beat Alabama! We need to do it more often!

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MARKED CHARACTERISTIC?

I would say hard work. I’ve faced a lot of challenges, whether it was

sitting at our kitchen table at the end of a work week wondering

if Marty and I could make it another week in our small business

or leading the state during a global pandemic and civil unrest.

Through them all, I’ve found that the three yards and a cloud of

dust mentality has always helped me grind through tough times.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN YOUR FRIENDS?

All of my closest friends are loyal people. Life is full of highs

and lows, and through some of what we’ve faced it would have

been easy for people to walk away. Sticking by someone’s side,

no matter what they’re facing, and being there for them is what

sets a true friend apart.

Pittsburgh +10.5 over Notre Dame Saturday, Nov. 15,

12:00 PM

Since a 2-2 start, the Panthers have won five straight

games and control their own destiny for a trip to the ACC

Championship and the College Football Playoff. While this

game has no impact on the ACC standings, Pittsburgh

needs to play well ahead of their last two games against

Georgia Tech and Miami. The Irish have won seven

straight of their own, but this will be their toughest

matchup in quite some time, not to mention they will be

on the road. Roll with Pittsburgh +10.5 over the Irish.

Georgia Tech -17.5 over Boston College Saturday, Nov. 15

3:30 PM

The Jackets travel to Massachusetts for a matchup with

the Boston College Eagles who are 1-9 and winless in the

ACC. After suffering their first loss of the season against

NC State two weeks ago, Coach Key had a bye week to

regroup and get ready for this one. While road games can

be tricky, Georgia Tech is miles better than Boston College

and will take care of business in this get-right game. Roll

with Georgia Tech -17.5 over Boston College.

Alabama -6.5 over Oklahoma Saturday, Nov. 15 3:30 PM

The Tide found a way to win in an ugly game against their

rival LSU last weekend. This team has seen one of the

biggest resurgences in recent memory, rattling off eight

straight wins since their loss to Florida State. The Sooners

beat Tennessee on the road in their last game to keep their

slim CFP hopes alive, but I think this Alabama team is too

much to handle. Roll with the Tide -6.5 over Oklahoma.

Ole Miss -13.5 over Florida Saturday, Nov. 15, 7:00 PM

The Gators were embarrassed last weekend 38-7 for

their sixth loss of the season. DJ Lagway was benched

for Tramell Jones, so it just feels like this team is counting

down the days until the season is over. Aside from the

Georgia loss, Kiffin and the Rebels have cruised through

this season with little adversity. I expect this one to be

a blowout from the start. Roll with Ole Miss -13.5 over

Florida.

Northwestern +9.5 over Michigan Saturday, Nov. 15

12:00 PM

Michigan continues to squeak by against their inferior

Big Ten opponents. They need to win out before their

matchup with Ohio State at the end of the month for

a shot at the Big Ten Championship. Northwestern has

been one of the lesser teams in the conference, but

noon kicks with high spreads are always worth a look.

At the very least, watching this game in Wrigley Field

will be fun to watch. Roll with Northwestern +9.5 over

Michigan.

Ohio State -30.5 over UCLA Saturday, Nov. 15 7:30 PM

This might seem like a lot of points, but this is a tale of

polar opposite defenses. UCLA gives up 31 PPG, while the

Buckeyes give up around a touchdown. I could see this

game being in the 45-0 range with Ohio State dominating

from the opening kickoff. The best team in the nation

puts on a show on national television. Roll with Ohio State

-30.5 over UCLA.

JD’S

BY: JEFF DANTZLER

There were some tremendous games this past weekend around the country. Two

games in the Big Ten stood out, with Indiana winning at Penn State, and a classic

in the rain between Iowa and Oregon. The SEC is stacked, and there is not an easy

out. Texas Tech was very sharp against Brigham Young. There are great conference

races all around the country, with so many teams fighting to get one of those 12

coveted spots in the College Football Playoff.

1. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes defense was

outstanding again in a 34-10 win over Purdue in West

Lafayette to make it 9-0. The defending champions can

essentially clinch a playoff berth Saturday against UCLA in the

horseshoe.

2. TEXAS A&M - The Aggies followed up their

extremely impressive win at LSU (with an open

date in between) with a victory on the road against

another set of Tigers, Mizzou in Columbia. This team is explosive

offensively and boasts an outstanding defensive front.

3. INDIANA - The Hoosiers had a tremendous come

from behind win over Penn State in Happy Valley.

Indiana is a perfect 10-0 and into double digits in the

win column for a second straight campaign. Wisconsin

heads to Bloomington this Saturday.

4. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide handled LSU 20-9,

pushing the record to 8-1 with an eight-game winning

streak since losing the opener to Florida State. Ty

Simpson is an outstanding quarterback. Oklahoma

heads to T-town for a big SEC clash.

5. OREGON - The Ducks mounted a tremendous

comeback victory in Iowa City to edge the Hawkeyes

18-16. An overruled two-point conversion after Iowa

took a 16-15 lead was huge. Oregon is now 8-1 and

will be in action Friday night at home against Minnesota.

6. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs played one of their

best games of the season this past week in Starkville,

defeating Mississippi State 41-21 in Starkville. Now

Kirby Smart’s team is 8-1 and all the focus is on Texas for a highly

anticipated showdown Between the Hedges.

7. OLE MISS - The Rebels, led by their high octane

offense, easily defeated The Citadel in a tune up game.

Next up is talented Florida in Gainesville, with interim

coach Billy Gonzalez. Last season, the Gators upset Ole Miss in

Gainesville.

8. TECH - The Yellow Jackets were off this past week

following their first loss of the season, which came at

N.C. State. Haynes King is a tremendous quarterback,

leading a high powered offense. Tech heads north to play Boston

College Saturday.

9. TEXAS TECH - The Red Raiders have bounced

back in strong fashion since losing at Arizona State.

The highlight win came this past Saturday, as they

dominated Brigham Young 29-7 in Lubbock. Texas Tech can score,

and is in the Big XII driver’s seat.

10. TEXAS - The Longhorns were off this past week,

fine tuning for the highly anticipated matchup against

Georgia in Athens. Steve Sarkisian’s team has loads of

talent, and has won four straight, beating Oklahoma, Kentucky,

Mississippi State and Vandy.

11. OKLAHOMA - The Sooners have faced one of

the toughest schedules in college football, and are

7-2 on the year. Oklahoma had this past week off after

beating Tennessee in Knoxville. Now comes a huge

test at Alabama, which will be seeking revenge.

12. JAMES MADISON - Welcome to the Top 12

James Madison. These Dukes are some kind of tough.

They beat Marshall 35-23 to improve to 8-1 and 6-0 in

the Sun Belt. James Madison leads the Sun Belt, losing

only to Louisville. The Dukes host App. St. Saturday.

Tune into the Bulldog Brunch every Sunday at 10AM with Jeff Dantzler,

Old & In The Way

BY GREG POOLE

HAS GEORGIA FOOTBALL TURNED A CORNER? THE STATEMENT WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR …

The first half against Mississippi

State looked like a team choosing

which identity it wants to project down

the stretch. Georgia’s growth has been

incremental over the fall, but the opening

30 minutes screamed “we’re done

tinkering.”

Georgia’s script emphasized immediate

rhythm throws and pairings that married

the run game to play-action. That early

commitment forced Mississippi State to

declare numbers and leverage, and the

Bulldogs (the Athens kind) consistently

won the pre-snap math. Gunner Stockton’s

command showed up in the little things:

protection IDs, snap-to-throw decisiveness,

and a willingness to take the profit. When

a quarterback plays on time, the offense

feels bigger. It did.

The other early tell was how comfortably

Georgia toggled between gap and zone

concepts. Nate Frazier pressed the line

with patience, and when the crease

appeared, he blazed north-south instead

of sightseeing to the sideline. That kind

of early run efficiency is jet fuel for a

coordinator’s menu—suddenly you’re

living in second-and-fives where anything

is on the table. Add in timely tags to the

perimeter, and you get a first half that felt

less like a hunt for answers and more like a

syllabus for November.

If you’re searching for proof of a corner

turned, start with the offensive line. The

middle of the season posed this group

some tough questions—consistency

in combos, communication against

movement, and finishing through the

echo of the whistle. This week, the answers

were loud and clear. Inside, Georgia did

the unspectacular things that make

coordinators sleep at night: they kept

the pocket firm, landed hips on double

teams, and climbed to linebackers with

balance. It felt less like five independent

contractors and more like one organism—

hat placement synced with footwork,

timing synced with the QB’s drop. That’s

the whole ballgame.

Georgia’s perimeter group reinforced the

message by playing grown-man football.

Noah Thomas’ catch radius turns tight

windows into honest ones, encouraging

throws that keep the offense on schedule.

Zachariah Branch emphasized the

importance of leveraging both horizontal

and vertical approaches, forcing safeties to

think twice before nosediving into the box.

With that spacing, Oscar Delp found grass

up the seam and on crossers. The lesson

is simple: when

your line protects

and your skill guys

are dependable

on rhythm, the

quarterback

becomes a point

guard with a

driving lane and

two shooters in the

corners. Efficient

football looks easy

because all the

hard work is already

baked in.

We’ve seen this

program win rock

fights with fourthquarter

resolve.

That’s in the DNA.

What’s new, and

critical as the

calendar narrows,

is how Georgia is

front-loading control.

Sprinting out of the

tunnel with a layered

structure forces

opponents to chase

a moving target. It

turns the second half

into a negotiation

on your terms: bleed

the clock when

you want, open the

throttle when you

choose. That agency

is how good teams become ruthless

ones. The most encouraging metric isn’t

a stat line; it’s sustainability. Early-down

success, clean pockets on must-pass snaps,

and a run game that stays on schedule

regardless of front, all of that travels. Cold

weather, hostile noise, and weird bounces,

none of it matters if your base holds up. An

O-line that can win straight up is the builtin

answer to football chaos.

Funny thing about a confident first

half: it shortens the night for your

defense. Georgia’s opening tempo forced

Mississippi State to expand its call sheet,

and when you’re chasing, mistakes

multiply. CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson were

freer to run because the game script wore

down the opponent’s patience. Jordan

Hall’s presence inside mattered; when

interior push pairs with a lead, offenses

lose the option to be stubborn. Daylen

Everette handled money downs like a

veteran, funneling throws into tighter

windows. The defense didn’t need to be

heroic—they just needed to be themselves

while the offense handled the heavy

lifting early. Complimentary football isn’t a

slogan; it’s a time-management strategy.

You could also feel the staff’s growing

comfort with the identity of this group.

The protections were tailored to the

front; the run pairings were coherent;

the sequencing told a story. There was

a refreshing absence of impatience.

Even when a play didn’t pop, the next

call wasn’t a panic switch—it was a

thoughtful counter from the same family.

That patience is a neon sign of trust in

the offensive line and a quarterback

who’s seeing it clean. It’s the difference

between trying on outfits and finding

your uniform.

So, has Georgia turned the corner? It isn’t

about fireworks at the end; it’s about the

first 30 minutes telling the truth. Georgia

came out decisive, physical, and precise.

The offensive line owned downs one and

two. The quarterback played on script.

The skilled players reduced volatility by

winning leverage and securing catches.

That cocktail turns Saturdays into process

wins, not personality tests.

From here, the mandate is simple: rinse

and repeat. If this first-half blueprint

holds, Georgia’s ceiling doesn’t just look

reachable; it looks routine. That’s the

scariest version of a contender: the one

that makes dominance feel like a habit.

This was grown-man ball up front, and

it changed everything. If the early-down

engine stays this clean, Georgia won’t

need miracle finishes; they’ll be building

insurmountable leads by halftime and

closing with a sledgehammer.

In November, that’s what turning the

corner looks like.

KEVIN BUTLER’S

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

COMPILED BY VANCE LEAVY

OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Nate Frazier – the sophomore out of Compton, California ran like Gavin

Newsom was trying to explain how his new tax plan will effect Nate’s NIL

deals. Nate did it like no other this past Saturday in Starkville against the

overmatched, baby Bulldogs, all to the sounds of fading cowbells. Frazier’s

59-yard sprint was just one of the many highlights Nate introduced to

the state of Mississippi. Nate’s production was a direct result of a young

offensive line coming into their own at a perfect time - when the games

are being WON in the trenches. His 12 carries for 181 yards is the highest

production from a running back this year and that was only matched by

the 303 yards total rushing yards turned in by the Georgia O. Nate led the

way with a strong 15.1 yards pre carry, but it all started in the trenches and

those stars in the trenches will pave the way to the college football playoff.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER

KJ Bolden - the 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore safety from Buford.

Georgia came back from a targeting call last week to record 10

tackles in a tremendous performance against the Mississippi State

baby Bulldogs. KJ is a physical ball player and his six assist and four

solos combined with his great coverage. Ths helped the Bulldogs

eliminate any threat from the baby dogs as the game progressed.

KJ’s inexperience is no longer a factor, he is a starter in the SEC and

performances like this one Saturday solidifies him moving forward

for the Georgia Bulldogs defense. The secondary has been suspect

earlier this year but with each game played the Bulldogs secondary

is getting better with every pass attempt. It is important to progress

with each game and KJ is doing just that and the defense is

following. Dawgs... follow KJ’ lead... to the top of mountain!

SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER

Peyton Woodring - once again on Saturday in Starkville, Payton was

perfect when the situation needed him the most. Woodring continues

his consistency with two field goals of 49 and 46 yards to help the

Bulldogs to a key SEC victory on the road In Starkville. You cannot be

successful in the SEC without a solid kicking game, and Peyton has

brought that to the University of Georgia since he arrived two years

ago. The University of Georgia has been able to take field goal kicking

for granted, but Kirby Smart and his coaching staff don’t take it for

granted. They have all the confidence in the world in their kicking

game. As we continue the march to the College Football Playoff,

Peyton Woodring will be a key offensive weapon for the Bulldogs. He

can’t do it without a great snap, a great hold and great protection, but

in the end he gets to be in the magazine either way.., keep it up Peyton.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE GAME

UGA offensive line - the call we heard this past week was “we need

more cowbell”… well, that song and dance is over. When a baby

Bulldog wants to step up and play with the big Bulldog the baby

Bulldog will be in for a rude awakening. That rude awakening

came in the form of an offensive line that truly dominated an

inferior Mississippi State defensive line. We have had a few injuries

in our offensive line but our motto is “next man up” proved to be

right again. Freeling, Morris, Bobo, Calhoun, Green, Meriweather,

Hughley, Uini, Daniels and Jackson are the unsung heroes that work

their asses off every week and continue to improve, which improves

UGA’s chances at a championship. I love my BIG UGLIES!!!!!!

PICKUP &

STATS THAT

MATTER

GEORGIA - 41, MISS. STATE - 21

BY: ANNA WILLIAMS/BI

A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and Miss. State.

3- TD PASSES FROM GUNNER STOCKTON

Gunner Stockton had quite the game against Mississippi

State, throwing three touchdown passes to three different

targets – Oscar Delp, Noah Thomas and Zachariah Branch.

Stockton looked comfortable and in command, spreading the

ball around and keeping Mississippi State’s defense on their

toes. Each score came at key points in the game, showcasing

Stockton’s rhythm and coordination within the offense. His

performance against the Maroon Bulldogs was another sign of

his growth as a leader and playmaker this season.

8-CATCHES FROM ZACHARIAH BRANCH

Zachariah Branch led all the receivers with eight catches for

68 yards and a touchdown, displaying his explosiveness that

makes him dangerous in open space. Stockton trusted Branch

early and often, finding him on quick-hitting routes that kept

drives alive. Branch’s speed and sure hands made things tricky

for Mississippi State’s defense, and his presence this season

has added a new layer of versatility to Georgia’s offense

heading into the stretch run.

10-TACKLES FROM KJ BOLDEN

KJ Bolden led the way defensively with 10 tackles, once again

proving that he’s one of the most exciting young defenders

to watch on the field. The sophomore defensive back was

all over the field, delivering key stops and showing great

instincts in both run support and coverage. His ability to

anticipate plays quickly and close with authority helped

limit Mississippi State’s big-play potential. Bolden’s effort

and energy proved to be high, helping Georgia’s defense

stay dominant from start to finish.

181- RUSHING YARDS FROM NATE FRAZIER

It was a career game for Nate Frazier, who ran for 181 yards

and a touchdown on the ground. His 59-yard scoring burst

in the game put Georgia ahead 31-7. Frazier showed a

blend of patience, power and breakaway speed that made

it almost impossible for Mississippi State to contain him.

His performance highlighted how deep Georgia’s backfield

really is, and it gave the Bulldogs a physical edge that wore

down Mississippi State’s defense as the game went on.

567- TOTAL YARDS OF OFFENSE

Georgia’s offense put together its most complete showing of

the season, racking up 567 total yards – 264 passing and 303

rushing. The Bulldogs established dominance early, moved

the ball consistently, and kept Mississippi State guessing all

afternoon. It wasn’t just the yardage total that stood out,

it was the efficiency and playmaking ability behind it. With

both the passing game and ground attack firing at this level,

Georgia reminded everyone why they’re one of the most

dangerous teams this season.
