From hip pain to cancer
Rugby-loving dad told he has three to 12 months left
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Two months ago, Rick Illes
was still struggling with
ongoing hip pain after slipping
on the running board while
getting into his vehicle in
August last year.
The 59-year-old had seen a
number of doctors,and was
on medications and cortisone
injections in a bid to fix it, but
nothing worked.
Finally, he was sent for an
MRI to find out why the pain
wasn’t improving.
The scan revealed a lump.
A biopsy confirmed it was a
cancerous adenocarcinoma
tumour growing on his left
hip.
Initially, Rick was told he
had a life expectancy of 18
months. But two weeks ago,
the news became more grim
– doctors said three to 12
months was more realistic.
“All of a sudden, it’s lifechanging,”
the Rolleston
resident said.
“There's been quite a few
tears, and in your head you're
going, ‘well, why me?’
“I've never smoked, I’ve
never taken drugs, I’ve lived a
reasonably clean life.
The new council looks like its
getting off to a good start.
Councillors will today discuss
a less of an iron glove
approach to issuing parking
tickets (page 3).
That will be good news,
obviously, to motorists in
what is a new era of enforcement.
Prior to 18 months ago,
you would rarely see a parking
officer.
It would be fair to say the
council parking officer or
officers have taken an enthusiastic
approach to their
work. Others might say it
has been a take no prisoners
strategy.
Parking ticket enforcement up for debate
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A more pragmatic approach for
issuing parking fines may be on
the cards.
Latest data shows the council
issued 2806 infringement
notices valued at $392,739 from
November 1, 2024 to October 31,
2025. Of those, 427 were later
cancelled, valued at $85,863.
The data also shows the top
reason for a ticket is not having
a current registration (521), followed
by not having a warrant
of fitness (484). Both come with
a $200 fine.
There were 392 tickets issued
for parking on a grass berm or
verge, down about half compared
to the previous 12 months.
Overall, it marks an increase
from the previous year, when
the council issued 2070 infringement
notices totalling $199,528
from October 1, 2023, to September
30, 2024.
Kā Puna Springs Ward councillor
Aaron McGlinchy said he
had been made aware of several
tickets being issued for cars
without a WoF outside the Auto4
garage in Lincoln, while waiting
to get one.
“A proactive approach would be
to go and talk to the person in the
garage and say, ‘these cars don’t
have warrants, what is the plan
for them? ' rather than piss everybody
off,” McGlinchy told council
staff at a briefing last week.
Auto4 confirmed cars were
ticketed, but declined to
comment.
Council acting development
and growth executive director
HAVE YOUR SAY: Send your parking ticket story in 200 words
or less to daniel.alvey@alliedmedia.co.nz
A parking warden issuing a ticket in Rolleston earlier this year for vehicles parked on a footpath; Mayor Lydia Gliddon and
deputy mayor Brendan Shefford in council chambers.
Emma Larsen said there was no
record of tickets being issued
outside the garage in the system.
“It is also relevant to note
that there is no consent for the
business to use the public road
and parking spaces for private
business activities, including
for storage for operating a
business.”
Deputy mayor Brendan Shefford
described parking tickets as
“revenue gathering” and said he
would support a change.
“There is a time and place for
it, at Saturday sports day, that’s
not a time and a place for it. On
a berm on a narrow street, that’s
not a time and a place for it,”
Shefford said.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said
fines could be avoided by having
a conversation or issuing a
warning.
“I do believe a more pragmatic
approach should guide how
parking tickets are issued, particularly
for things like cars
parked on verges.
“Parking is challenging in
some areas, especially where
roads are narrow or there’s limited
designated parking. I do see
the need for a parking bylaw, as
it provides clear guidance where
it’s genuinely required. But in
many day-to-day situations, if a
bit of commonsense and discretion
were to be applied, there
might not be major issues.”
In February, Rolleston resident
John Boulton failed to appeal a
$40 fine for parking on the verge
outside his Lucca Cres property.
He argued he had parked on the
berm to allow enough space for
vehicles to pass through and had
been doing so for four-and-ahalf
years.
Larsen said staff do try and
take a pragmatic approach and
use warnings to remind people
about parking safely.
“However, parking on berms
can damage infrastructure,
which costs ratepayers to repair.
It can also obstruct pedestrian
access and compact the berms,
which reduces their effectiveness
in soaking up stormwater
runoff,” she said.
Gliddon said councillors will
have a chance to discuss the
matter further at a briefing later
this month.
“That session will be an
opportunity to ensure our
approach is balanced, clear
where rules are needed,
but flexible enough to allow
staff to use judgement and
work constructively with the
community.”
Rural scholarship
Mayor Lydia Gliddon’s election
campaign manager Tracey
Perkins has been awarded one
of four Nuffield Scholarships
alongside other rural leaders.
Perkins lives in Darfield on a
1050-cow dairy farm and is the
founder and lead facilitator
of AgriThrive. The prestigious
scholarship allows recipients to
attend rural events overseas.
Diwali noise complaint
The council did not tell Selwyn
Diwali organisers to turn off
the music at the festival last
Saturday in Lincoln, a council
spokesperson said. Diwali
organisers told Selwyn Times
last week the council’s noise
control officer told them to
switch off the music part way
through the final performance,
but now acknowledge a
miscommunication happened
between event staff and the
officer, who attended the event.
LED light project completed
All 10,000 streetlights across
the district have now been
converted to LED lights. The
five-year project by the council
with the majority of funding
from the New Zealand Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi, saw
about 5000 lights upgraded.
About 10% of the council’s
energy use is from streetlighting.
The conversion has meant
about $536,000 has been saved
on power bills over the past
four years.
Community rallies around family
› From Page 1
“I obviously had a few drinks
every now and again, but I’m
like, ‘how did this happen to
me?’”
His wife Lou was with him for
the diagnosis.
“You both look at each other
and you just see your whole life
go, just like that,” she said.
“And these people sitting in
front of you are just to the point
– they’re clinical, they gave a
box of tissues and said ‘we'll
leave you to it, take a minute
to process what we’ve just told
you.’
“I think we were both just in
shock.”
When the MRI first showed a
lump, doctors thought it might
be a giant cell tumour, a benign
bone tumour typically found in
joints.
“We were thinking, ‘great,
once this is confirmed, they’ll
just open it up, cut it out, close
it up, business as usual’,” Rick
said.
“It wasn’t until they did
the biopsy (about two weeks
later), and came back about
a week after that and said it’s
cancerous.”
The cancer in Rick’s hip was
secondary. The primary tumour
was later revealed to be throat
cancer in his oesophagus.
He had noticed swelling in his
neck in the past, but doctors had
brushed it off as a thyroid issue.
“I said, ‘look, it’s sore to push,
it’s sore if I yawn’, but it sort of
got fobbed off as more thyroid
stuff and other bits and pieces.”
A year ago, his GP referred
him for a CT scan on his neck,
which was declined by Health
New Zealand due to high
demand for the service.
Rick believes an earlier scan
could have revealed the cancer
sooner.
“They’re obviously busy,
whatever it is, but for me, that’s
not really an excuse,” he said.
“If it had been cottoned on to
earlier, it would have raised a
whole lot more around maybe
the hip and the throat.
“I don’t know how it exactly
works, but maybe rather than it
“I’ve never smoked, I’ve
never taken drugs, I’ve
lived a reasonably clean
life, I obviously had a
few drinks every now
and again, but I’m like,
‘how did this happen to
me?’”
Rick Ills
now being at stage four, maybe
it was at stage three, I don’t
know.
“Maybe there were options for
it to be cured then, rather than
12 months later.”
Lou said there were other
signs something more serious
was going on than just a sore
hip and a swollen throat.
“Over the space of this 12-18
months, he’s lost like 20kg, and
not one doctor has investigated
that other than asking if it was
‘intentional’.”
Said Rick: “The hip was the
one that was causing me grief.
It’s one of those ironic things,
because the hip is secondary
cancer, whereas the oesophagus
is the main cancer, but I hadn’t
had a sore throat, I hadn’t had
anything other than (swelling).”
Four weeks ago, when a stent
was put in his throat to allow
him to eat, Rick was told by the
surgeon he had just 18 months
to live.
left reeling after shock diagnosis
But two weeks later, his
oncologist gave him a new
estimate – three to 12 months.
“Probably one of the worst
things is that when you go
along to see the doctors, you're
waiting for just a little glimmer
of something to go, ‘oh, that's
good’,” he said.
“Then he says ‘three to 12
months’. What do you mean?
That’s the hardest thing to take
in.”
“That hit hard,” said Lou.
“Because suddenly you’ve lost
six, eight, 10 months of what
you’ve been told.
“We just kept getting
slammed with something every
time we went to the doctor, so
we started dreading these visits
because you think, ‘well, what
are we going to be told now?’”
Rick is unable to continue his
job in recruitment, while Lou
now works from home in land
registration. Their sons, Liam,
25, and Tyler, 22, live with them
and do what they can to help.
“Telling the boys was the
hardest part,” said Lou.
“Your friends is one thing, but
telling your boys or your family
is very different in the way that
they respond.
“We just sort of sat and
watched their faces, and you
could see, we had just had our
world ripped out from under us
– and we’ve just done the same
to them.”
The family is selling their
house and downsizing, and also
selling their caravan to adjust
to a single income. Christmas
Rick Illes with his sons Tyler, left, and Liam after a rugby game for Rolleston this
year. The family have been part of the club for 20 years through playing, coaching
and volunteering, and club president Nicky Ruki has set up a Givealittle page to
support Rick.
plans to go camping in Twizel
with extended family have been
shelved.
Rick is currently undergoing
radiotherapy and trying other
ways to slow the cancer’s
spread – taking vitamin C
pills and other supplements
while also cutting sugars and
carbohydrates from his diet,
which some cancers can feed
on. He said the cost of that is
around $700.
“It’s quite tough to gather that
together, but our friends so far
have been great and I’ve got a
big family, so they’ve been good.
“The idea is to beat it, obviously.
The doctors don’t get to
play God in this case.”
The family has a long
association with the Rolleston
Rugby Club. Liam and Tyler
played for the division 2 side
this year. Rick has played
golden oldies and coached his
sons’ junior teams, while Lou
has helped out on club days.
President Nicky Ruki, a close
friend of the family, has set up a
Givealittle page to help them.
“We were pretty overwhelmed
with that sort of
offer,” said Lou.
“That’s that community spirit
– the boys were five when they
started playing there, so they've
grown up through the grades,
and you do become really good
friends with the parents as
well.”
Rick said he was feeling okay
and taking things one day at a
time. His only restriction is the
pain in his hip – he has had a
pin put in his thigh because the
bone there has become brittle.
“A little bit sore, a little bit of
pain, but in general I feel okay.
If I could move on this leg, I
could hop in the car and go to
the mall for a wander around.
I’m not feeling like I have to
vomit or anything else like that.
“Part of me almost feels some
of the things we’re doing are
working. It’s only been a couple
of weeks, but it's so early on
I could just be fooling myself
with that conversation too.”
Rick said he appreciates the
help he has had from friends
and family.
“It does become quite a
challenge. We've been very
fortunate because we’ve got
really good friends that have
always just been there, all the
time, for anything, which makes
such a huge difference.
“They’ll buy biscuits for the
dogs, knowing that it’s just
another thing for us to have
to worry about, or other little
things just to help out.”
Councillors to set salaries at first
meeting as induction continues
New councillors have been
coming to grips with key issues
at a briefing ahead of their first
official council meeting today,
where they will decide their
salaries. Daniel Alvey reports
The new council will have its first
official meeting today since being
sworn in last month – and a key
item on the agenda is to decide
how much they will get paid.
The Remuneration Authority
has allocated $754,690 to be
split among 10 councillors.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon’s $167,420
salary is set separately by the
authority – a 5.9% increase from
the $158,082 former mayor Sam
Broughton was paid.
The salary pool for councillors
has risen 26% from last
term, who earned $58,613.
Today, councillors have three
options to choose on how they
want to split the $754,690.
The first would see deputy
mayor Brendan Shefford get
$90,000, finance and performance
chair councillor Aaron
McGlinchy get $80,000, and
other councillors get $73,086.
Option two would see no
bonus for McGlinchy, while
each councillor would get
$73,854.
Councillors have been briefed on the district’s growth and the legislation that has
shaped it.
Option three is all councillors,
including Shefford, receive the
same rate of $75,469.
Council has no control over
how much the Remuneration
Authority allocates for the salary
pool, which is rates-funded.
Councillors will also decide
whether to add an allowance
of up to $4500 to install home
security at their houses, which
was added by the Remuneration
Authority in June to allowances
for elected members and would
be rates-funded. Allowances
include travel and some childcare
costs.
Deep dives start
While this week marks the
start of official meetings, councillors
have already begun
briefings on key considerations
as part of the induction process.
At the first briefing last week,
council staff highlighted the
way growth in Selwyn has
largely been out of council
control due to Government legislation
dictating what councils
can zone and where.
This started in 2016 with the
Housing Accord and Special
Housing Areas Act, which enabled
rural land to be subdivided
outside normal planning rules.
“There were two areas that
picked up this special pathway,
one is Acland
Park in Rolleston
and parts
of Faringdon,”
council
acting development
and
growth executive
director
Emma Larsen
Emma Larsen
said during the
briefing.
“It enabled about 1000 additional
homes in Rolleston.”
Jump foward to 2020, and the
Covid-19 Recovery (Fast-track
Consenting) Act was introduced
to assist the country’s recovery
from the pandemic.
“It allowed some major housing
projects to bypass normal
RMA processes for faster delivery,”
said Larsen.
Faringdon South West, Faringdon
South East, and Faringdon
On today’s agenda is whether to add
a home security allowance of up to
$4500 for councillors.
Oval were all consented under
this act, equating to about 2100
homes.
Also in 2020, there was a
change to the Government’s
National Policy Statement for
Urban Development.
It required the council to
consider any rezoning requests
that would contribute to development
capacity.
This resulted in about 16 private
plan change requests.
Among those were the
beginnings of the 2100-home
Earlsbrook subdivision in
Lincoln.
It was controversially
approved through the District
Plan review while under appeal
by community advocacy group
Lincoln Voice.
Back in the garden at last
Sue spent three years watching
her beloved garden slowly turn
into what she calls “a beautiful
mess” – not by choice, but
because kneeling had become her
enemy.
“I’d always been the gardener in
our family,” Sue explains from her
now-immaculate vegetable patch.
“My husband jokes he has black
thumbs. But there I was, pointing
and instructing like some sort of
garden general who couldn’t get
into the trenches.”
The 66-year-old retiree had
gradually surrendered tasks
she once loved. First went the
weeding. Then the planting.
Koru FX
By last year, she was directing
operations from a chair while
her husband did his best with the
spade.
The frustration peaked when her
three grandchildren visited.
“They wanted to plant
strawberries with Nana,” Sue
recalls. “I had to sit on a stool
and supervise. My 5-year-old
granddaughter asked why I
couldn’t get down with them. That
hurt more than my knees ever
did.”
Sue had tried various remedies
over the years. “Nothing quite
worked. Some helped a bit, but I’d
given up on getting back to proper
gardening.”
That changed when a friend
mentioned Koru FX. “She raved
about this natural cream made
here in New Zealand. Said it was
the only thing that helped her
tennis elbow.”
Sceptical but desperate, Sue
picked up a bottle from her local
pharmacy. “I figured I’d tried
everything else. What was one
more cream?”
What impressed Sue was
the natural formula. Koru FX
combines 16 natural ingredients
in a triple-action approach.
Warming oils like black pepper
help ingredients penetrate deep,
while peppermint and eucalyptus
provide cooling relief. Mānuka,
calendula, arnica and other
botanicals offer sustained support
throughout the day.
She applied it morning and
night to her troublesome knees.
“The first thing I noticed was it
didn’t smell medicinal. Just a nice
peppermint scent. And it absorbed
quickly, not greasy like others I’d
tried.”
Within a week, Sue noticed
something remarkable. “I was
deadheading roses and realised
I’d been bending for five minutes
without thinking about it. That
hadn’t happened in years.”
Two weeks later came the real
test. “The grandkids were visiting
again. My granddaughter asked if
we could plant spring vegetables.
I said yes without thinking, then
panicked.”
But Sue managed 40 minutes
in the garden with them. “Proper
gardening, on my knees in the dirt.
My granddaughter’s face when I
got down beside her – priceless.”
The improvement has been
steady since. Sue’s garden, once
“My husband’s relieved
he’s been demoted from head
gardener,” she laughs. “Though
he still helps with the heavy
digging!”
When asked what she’d tell
others in similar situations, Sue
doesn’t hesitate. “Don’t accept
that this is just how things are
now. I spent years thinking this
was my new normal.”
She pauses at her garden gate,
surveying rows of silverbeet and
spring onions. “When you get
back something you thought was
gone - whether it’s gardening,
walking, playing with grandkids -
that’s everything.”
Halls, swimming, Selwyn Awards on the table
› From Page 7
The process was a reason
why Lincoln Voice committee
members Denise Carrick,
McGlinchy and Tracey Macleod
decided to successfully stand
for council.
In 2021, the Government
brought in the Enabling Housing
Supply Amendment Act,
which forced the introduction
of medium-density
zoning in Rolleston, Lincoln and
Prebbleton.
Across the three towns,
1922ha of land was intensified,
and 716ha was rezoned from
rural to medium-density.
In 2022, the Government
introduced the National Policy
Statement for Highly Productive
Land.
“It made it much more difficult
to rezone highly productive
land, and it could only proceed
if there is a need for development
capacity.
“The gate was open for a
period of time, and now it
has been sort of shut in terms
of rezoning rural land for
residential development,”
Larsen said.
Highly productive land meant
a business park bid on the outskirts
of Lincoln failed to get
approved after an Environment
Court process.
Community halls
Public consultation on five
underutilised community halls
is likely to happen in the next
12-18 months.
The consultation on Mead
Hall, Tawera Hall, Sheffield
Hall, Greenpark Hall and
Greendale Hall
were among
13 the council
started assessing
the future of
in 2023.
“A community
group is more
likely to travel
to a newer,
warmer, or
more suitable
Catherine
Parker
venue for their activity rather
than a local hall,” council head
of venues and events Catherine
Parker said at the briefing.
Parker said for most of the
halls, the cost of keeping them
open was outweighing the revenue
returned.
She said those five were
chosen because there is interest
in either the land next to the
halls or the community groups
to which the ownership could
be transferred.
Once the future of the first
five is decided, the council will
work through the remaining
eight.
Swimming success in Selwyn
Selwyn’s Learn to Swim is
now one of the largest singlevenue
swimming programmes
in the country.
There were 13,525
participants in the Selwyn
Aquatic Centre programme in
the 2024/25 financial year, with
about 3300-3500 people a term.
“This is the largest single
facility swim school in the
South Island and pushing
Sheffield Hall is one of five underused community halls the council is planning
to consult on over the next 12-18 months. Above – the council’s Learn to Swim
programme is now one of the largest of its kind in the country.
towards the largest in New
Zealand; there are only one
or two in Auckland pushing
around the high 3000 mark,”
head of sport and recreation
James Richmond said at the
briefing.
Richmond said Christchurch
City Council has about 6000
participants across its six pools.
The programme brought in
$1.93m of revenue and cost
$1.61m to put on, largely due to
parts of the programme being
heavily subsidised.
Survey on Selwyn Awards
The council has launched a
survey to get feedback on the
Selwyn Awards.
The biennial awards were
held in August, and councillors
were briefed on it last week.
The event cost the council
$316,102, of which $125,875 was
recovered through sponsorship
and ticket sales.
It was raised at the briefing
that not all businesses, community
groups and individuals felt
they were eligible to enter or
may not have been well represented
at the event.
As a result, a short survey
has been launched that
asks questions about the
development of award
categories, eligibility criteria,
judging process, and event
production.
Toot for
tucker on
tonight
BY DANIEL ALVEY
If you hear a lot of honking and
sirens tonight, do not be alarmed,
it is all for a good cause.
The annual Toot for Tucker
appeal – which gives a vital boost
to local foodbanks – will take
place in Lincoln tonight and in
Rolleston on November 26.
Volunteers will drive through
neighbourhoods tooting their
horns to encourage people to
come out with donations. The
event is a joint effort by Rolleston
Rotary, the Rolleston and Selwyn
Lions, and Property Brokers.
Rolleston Rotary secretary
Amanda van der Kley said 233
boxes of food were donated
across the two towns.
“This year, more than a lot of
the other years, we’ve got no
expectations because it is pretty
tough out there for people.”
Donations are split between
the Salvation Army in Rolleston,
Greenpark Foodbank in Lincoln
and the Ellesmere Foodbank in
Leeston.
“What we are hearing from
the food banks is that need has
significantly increased.” van der
Kley said.
Volunteers will be out collecting
from about 6pm. If you miss the
run, donations can be made at
No budget to progress emergency hub
BY DANIEL ALVEY
An all-in-one emergency
services hub appears likely to
be shelved.
The hub was proposed to put
fire, police and ambulance all
in one building at ouncil-owned
Helpet Park in Rolleston.
The idea was formalised with
a memorandum of understanding
between the council, police,
Hato Hone St John and Fire and
Emergency New Zealand in
December 2023.
So far, the council has spent
$155,634 on a feasibility study
for the hub.
Options for
it and Helpet
Park are set to
be presented to
councillors early
next year.
Sources told
Selwyn Times
while there is
interest in the
project, none of
Sarah Sinclair
the emergency services want to
pay for it.
While the police are struggling
for space in their Rolleston
station, there is a short-term
plan to put temporary buildings
in place on its current site.
Rural Canterbury area
commander Inspector Peter
Cooper referred questions
about the hub to the council,
but confirmed police had only
invested time at this stage and
are “exploring options”.
FENZ asset and programme
delivery deputy chief executive
Sarah Sinclair said funding
A feasibility study with options for Helpet Park in Rolleston will be presented to councillors early next year. A hub was
proposed to put fire, police and ambulance all in one building.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
cannot be committed until a
formally approved business case
is in place.
“(FENZ) continues to assess
the most effective way to meet
future operational needs in the
Rolleston area. The location of
the proposed emergency services
campus falls within the area we
are considering,” she said.
FENZ’s funding is currently
under scrutiny, with it facing
issues over pay for firefighters
and underinvestment in its
firetruck fleet.
Rolleston Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief fire officer Marty
Tier said he had heard nothing
from FENZ or the council
about the hub.
He told Selwyn Times in June
FENZ had been
“caught with their
pants around
their ankles”
in regards to
underinvestment
in Selwyn.
St John said it
has committed to
working alongside Sharon Mason
its emergency
services partners, but did not
respond to the question about
whether it had committed any
funding to it.
Council chief executive Sharon
Mason said fitting in with the
different capital budgets of the
emergency services was an
added layer of complexity in
progressing the concept.
“We are continuing to develop
options for Helpet, which will be
workshopped and shaped
by councillors’ input in early
2026. This approach allows
the newly elected council
time to review the project
and determine its preferred
direction before engaging with
the community.”
Mason would not say what
the options were, and if they
included the council funding
the project in a similar way
to the Selwyn Health Hub in
Rolleston. The council spent
$14.7m to build it in 2022 as
a commercial investment to
lease out to health providers,
including a GP practice and
radiology clinic.
Music festival returns to
raise funds for dojo
BY KEES CHALMERS
Jordan Luck and The Eastern are
topping the bill for Saturday’s Little
River Music Festival at Western Hills
Farm.
It is back for its second year in a row –
and is close to selling out.
The festival was resurrected by The
Exponents frontman after a 10-year hiatus,
to raise money to restore what is
commonly known as the old ‘recycling
shed’.
The building was purchased by the Little
River Ju-Jitsu Club in 2018 with plans
to convert it into a community facility
with a focus on martial arts.
But the club has struggled to come up
with the funds to refurbish it.
Joining Luck and The Eastern are
Adam Hattaway and the Haunters,
Patients, The Late Starters, Assembly
Required, The Western Valley Road
Band, Al Park, Dangerbaby, the Wairewa
Rūnanga Choir, and Steph McEwin and
Rosanna Harvey.
Last year, it was a tight turnaround to
put the festival together, with consents
and alcohol licenses only coming in the
day before.
Festival director Mario Downes could
not provide exact figures, but said it
broke even on costs, plus a bit more.
From the proceeds and what the club
has put into the building, he estimated
between $10,000 and $15,000 has been
raised for materials and floor covering.
Since then, Downes and his team
have been working away in the background,
putting more time and focus on
advertising.
Last year’s festival hosted about 500
out of a possible 2000. But, with the current
trajectory of ticket sales, Downes
expects close to a sellout crowd on
Saturday.
“It’s looking pretty awesome, it’s going
to be a huge day out,” he said.
Downes originally started the festival
in 2001 at his former property in
Cooptown and ran it annually until 2013
when he sold the venue.
Legal Matters
Increase of probate threshold
from $15,000 to $40,000
Probate is the legal process under which a High Court
application is made to validate a Will and authorise
executor/s to administer the deceased’s estate.
Probate was required if the value of the deceased’s assets
with any one institution (eg a bank) exceeded $15,000. This
meant that if the deceased had one or more accounts in their
sole name with a bank and the balance of all the accounts
at that bank at the date of death totalled more than $15,000
it would be necessary to seek a grant of probate or to apply
for letters of administration from the High Court before
institutions like banks or investment providers would release
funds.
The $15,000 threshold was established in 2009 before
widespread KiwiSaver balances and other retirement savings.
Many modest estates have triggered the court process which
increases the estate administration costs and erodes the
balance left for the beneficiaries.
As of 24 September 2025 the threshold requiring a probate
application in New Zealand increased from $15,000 to
$40,000. The update is in alignment with a recommendation
by the Law Commission in its 2021 review of succession
law. It means that estates with solely held bank accounts or
insurance policies etc of up to $40,000 in value may be dealt
with without going through the formal court process.
The update is likely to benefit the High Court and many
New Zealand families allowing modest estates to be dealt
with more efficiently and cost effectively.
Every
drop
counts
The trial recycling station at Darfield train station accepts clean household recyclables including paper,
cardboard, plastics 1, 2 and 5, as well as clean glass and cans.
Council trial brings drop-off
recycling station to Darfield
Together, let’s keep Selwyn’s
water flowing this summer
Summer is on the way, and forecasts suggest it could
be hotter and drier than usual. Now is the time to
start good water-saving habits. We’re already seeing
demand rising across our water network, and when
we all make small changes, it adds up to a big impact
that helps reduce the risk of water restrictions.
Water is precious. Every litre must be treated, stored,
and delivered to your home. When we use less,
we help reduce pressure on local supplies, treatment
systems, and the environment.
Selwyn residents use an average of 313 litres per
person each day, that’s about one and a half baths,
and above the national average of 229 litres. By being
water wise at home, we can save money and keep
water flowing for everyone.
Darfield is now home to a new recycling
station trial.
A 20-foot recycling container has been
installed at the township’s train station,
accepting clean glass bottles and jars,
plastic containers numbered 1, 2 and 5,
aluminium and steel cans, plus paper
and cardboard.
It will operate in a similar way to the
successful remote rubbish and recycling
centres at Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill,
but this is the first time one has been
placed in an urban township.
Council resource recovery and waste
manager Andrew Boyd said the trial
aims to close the gaps for properties
around Darfield that do not have
kerbside services at their gate.
“Residents have told us they want to
recycle, and we’ve noticed the public
recycling bins in the area are being used
to recycle a lot of household rubbish.
“People have also told us it needs to be
easy and convenient, so by trialling this
recycle station in Darfield, they have an
easier option available,” Boyd said.
The station will be monitored and is
not for use by businesses or households
that already have kerbside recycling.
The trial will be reviewed regularly
to ensure it is working effectively and
supporting the community, and its
success will rely on only clean recyclable
items being deposited, Boyd said.
Firefighter proud after pushing his
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Chris Peat was left exhausted after completing the World Firefighter Challenge
course four times in four days. The course included bashing a steel beam with a
sledgehammer, dragging a charged 20kg hose and hauling a 74kg dummy.
Chris Peat has returned from
what is described as ‘the
toughest two minutes in sport
for a firefighter’, calling the
experience a success after
testing his strength, speed, and
endurance to the limit.
Peat, who volunteers for the
Rolleston brigade and works in
the Christchurch Airport Fire
Service, recorded a best time of
2mins 0.41secs on day three of the
World Firefighter Challenge in
Dallas, Texas, his first time competing
on the international stage.
“I walked away head high,
and I was happy with that,” Peat
said.
The competition tests the
strength, speed and endurance
of firefighters by simulating realworld
tasks in full turnout gear.
It starts with carrying a 20 kilogram
hose up six storeys, then
hauling another 20kg of hose up
by rope.
Competitors then descend the
stairs and use a sledgehammer
to drive a 70kg steel beam along
1.5m of rollers. That is followed
by a 42-metre sprint through
a slalom course, dragging a
charged hose back 22m, and
then finishing by hauling a 74kg
dummy down a 32m course.
Peat ran the course four times
over four days. On his final run,
he was on track to break the
two-minute barrier, but a fall
prevented him from doing so.
“I gave everything I had (on
the dummy drag), and right
Peat recorded his best time of 2mins 0.41secs on the day three of the four-day event.
before the finish line, I fell –
the legs just went. You get to
a point where your legs go to
jelly, and before the mind could
overcome, I was on my bum.
But I got up and still got to the
finish,” he said.
Peat, 40, was 24th out of 38 in
his age category and 149th place
overall.
limits on world stage
New Zealand finished third
on the medal table behind the
United States and Canada.
Peat said one of the challenges
was adjusting to the course,
which was slightly different from
others he had completed, including
a slightly different scaffolding
layout in the six-storey tower.
“It is the microseconds that
can make or break winning a
race, breaking a PB or smashing
a record.”
He admitted there was a “truck
ton of nerves” for his first race,
but said they eased as the event
went on.
After competing, Peat spent
time sightseeing in New York,
including a visit to the former
World Trade Center site, where
343 firefighters were among the
2997 people killed in the September
11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Peat last visited the site in 2003.
“At the time, there were no
memorial pools, buildings
around the area were covered,
there was armed police on every
corner – that was quite a strange,
surreal experience,” he said.
“This time, it was a very serene
spot… walking around there, it is
pretty emotional.”
Peat said the trip would not
have been possible without
the people who donated to his
Givealittle page and sponsors.
Peat and other firefighters
from the district are set to
compete in the United Fire
Brigades Association Mid
Canterbury challenge in Lincoln
on November 22.
Peat took some time out to visit the memorial site for the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks on
the World Trade Center where 343 firefighters were among the 2997 people killed.
Students pull together
for tractor day tradition
How many Darfield High School
students does it take to pull a
tractor? The answer is 30.
Now in its fourth year, Bring
a Tractor to School Day has
become a much-loved tradition.
Eleven tractors – driven by
current and former students
– lined up on the school lawn,
where students had the chance
to check them out and even try
to move them by hand.
It took 30 students to shift
one tractor, while a larger John
Deere model didn’t budge at all.
The event was organised by
Tawera Rural College, a specialist
department within the
school. Rural college administrator
Pip Deans said it was
a great way to celebrate the
school’s rural community spirit.
“A huge thank you to our
amazing whānau who support
this fun rural tradition and
make it possible each year.”
Vacant lodge at
Arthur’s Pass to
reopen as a pub
The Chalet, an unoccupied twostorey
lodge at Arthur’s Pass,
sold at auction for $250,000 –
more than $1 million below its
RV.
It was bought by hospitality
entrepreneur Peter Whittaker,
who owns The Rockpool
and Bridies Bar & Bistro
in Christchurch, in
partnership with a West
Coast restaurateur.
“We’re going to renovate
the place and open
it up as a tavern,” Whittaker
told The Press.
“It’s in a nice spot,
right in a national park.”
Whittaker said he
did not have a timeline for the
renovation.
The 2024 rating valuation for
the chalet was $1.26m.
Bayleys listing agent Kate Mullins,
who marketed the property
with colleague Ben Deans, told
OneRoof the price reflected the
lodge’s condition and the seller’s
motivation.
“They wanted it gone and they
wanted to meet the market (and)
move on,” she said.
Mullins’ listing urged buyers
to “bring your builder, your
architect and your imagination”,
Kate Mullins
warning the property was “not
for the faint of heart”.
“It needs some TLC, that’s for
sure,” the agent told OneRoof.
The vendors paid $595,000
for the property in 2009, and
then leased it to an accommodation
provider who ran
it as The Chalet before
closing it 10 years ago.
The lodge had a dining
room, a commercial
kitchen, a bar, and 13
guest rooms, but had
been empty for years
and required significant
work, Mullins told
OneRoof.
She said it had
attracted inquiries from around
New Zealand before selling late
last month.
The European-inspired property
on SH73 has a long history
in the village. It was built by
Swiss ski instructor, climber and
stonemason Hans Bohny and his
wife, Patricia, in the 1960s.
The couple opened it as a
coffee shop before expanding
the premises into an 800sq
Pipes, pride and passion attract
A record crowd of about
11,000 people turned out to the
Hororātā Domain on Saturday
for the 14th Hororātā Highland
Games – an annual celebration
of Scottish and Kiwi culture.
One of the day’s most
memorable moments
came during the chieftain’s
welcoming ceremony, a mix of
Māori and Scottish traditions
that set the tone for the event.
The kapa haka group Ngā
Puāwai Ō Tāwera welcomed
this year’s chieftain, Michael
Fraser Milne, before 20 pipe
bands joined in a mass salute.
The games once again relied
on a huge community effort,
involving 21 Scottish clans, 800
competitors, 230 volunteers,
13 market stalls, and 19
community organisations
raising money for local causes.
For some, the event is a
source of inspiration, sparking
new passions and lifelong
involvement.
Rachelle McDowell shared
how the event has shaped her
daughter’s journey.
“Nine years ago, Charlotte
made us sit there and watch
bagpipes and highland dancing
all day at the Hororātā Highland
Games,” said McDowell.
“Now she was beyond excited
to be playing the bagpipes
there for the first time – in four
separate events – and coming
away with a third-place medal.”
Hororātā Community Trust
executive officer Cindy Driscoll
said that kind of story reflects
The welcoming ceremony for this year’s chieftain, Michael Fraser Milne, saw kapa haka group Ngā Puāwai Ō Tāwera perform, before
what the event is all about.
“I love that the games inspires
people to take up new passions
– whether it’s playing the
bagpipes or drums, highland
dancing, or heavy athletics,”
she said.
“This is also true for
our volunteers. When the
community started the
games back in 2011, most of
the committee hadn’t even
attended a Highland Games, let
alone run one. Now they know
all the ins-and-outs and have
developed their own passion
for creating something that is
truly special.”
Driscoll said the sense of
community around the games
extended far beyond the
Hororātā Valley.
“There’s a real sense of
belonging that isn’t just based
on geography. Yes, we have lots
of locals, but people also come
from all over to be part of Clan
Hororātā because they love being
part of this family.”
Money raised through the event
helps fund community projects,
including the ongoing renovation
of the Hororātā Hall.
dressed lad and lass competition – mum
Krista Ryken with Jasper, Delilah and
Isabella Traynor and grandad Graham
Gold & Silver
At Historically
High Prices
D uring these
we have seen a sharp
increase in the price of
precious metals. The gold price in New
Zealand is at near record levels so gather
up all your unwanted items and take
them along to the buyers. Tony Grant says
“We can buy gold items in all forms,
anything, even Gold Teeth! We also need
all Sterling Silver including Cups, Tea
Services, Cutlery and Old Coins” he said.
Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes
arly New Zealand Banknotes dated
Ebefore 1932 are currently fetching
big money! This is according to Mr Tony
Grant, author of the John Bertrand New
Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue.
Mr Grant is in Selwyn, Christchurch and
Canterbury next week on a buying trip
for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and
would be very keen to see any of these
issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any
undamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound
Collectors Need War Medals
ADVERTISEMENT
urrently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big
demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all
wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the
Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later
Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and
Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa
around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are
needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New
Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.
General service medals from both the First and Second
World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined
these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group
of medals has any special award for bravery such as the
Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for
Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add
great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John
Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals,
some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure
what to do with. These are better off in the hands of collectors
who will look after them. We will be happy to look at any war
medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.
Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity
o you have a bunch of old coins sitting around in your
drawers and cupboards? You just never know what
rarities may be lurking there. The advice from Tony Grant
from John Bertrand (Collectables) Limited is to “bring them
in and let us have a look”. “No need to sort anything out just
bring them in ‘as is’ and please don’t clean them! We can go
through coin accumulations and collections fairly quickly”
he said. The buyers are particularly keen to buy pre 1946
New Zealand Silver Coins and World Silver Coins. “In any
event we will buy All Coins,” said Mr Grant.
Chamberlain knock leads
Weedons to dominant win
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Weedons have held their
position at the top of the
Canterbury Country premier
competition thanks to a
blistering knock from star batter
Harry Chamberlain on Saturday.
Chamberlain took a liking to
the Peninsula-Harbour bowlers,
smashing 194 runs off just 116
balls to propel Weedons to an
imposing 367 for six from their
45 overs. The total was defended
with ease as Peninsula were
bowled out for 129.
Sefton’s Mackenzie Smith
and Ohoka’s Rhys Mariu are
the only other players in the
country competition to have
scored more than 150 runs in an
innings since 2022.
It was Chamberlain’s second
century in as many weeks, following
his 118 against Ohoka
in the previous round, and it
means Weedons maintain a fivepoint
lead over Pleasant Point at
the top of the table.
Chamberlain raced to 62 from
his first 24 balls, slowed through
the middle stages, then finished
with a bang – adding 72 runs
from his final 27 deliveries.
He was well supported by
Felix Naish, who made 99 off 81
balls before falling just short of
a maiden Weedons century.
Leg-spinner William Jull
claimed three wickets as Peninsula-Harbour
were dismissed
Weedons’ Harry Chamberlain, pictured playing for Canterbury in 2021, blasted 194 runs
off just 116 balls including 16 sixes against Peninsula-Harbour on Saturday.
for 129, 238 runs short of
Weedons’ total.
Meanwhile, Pleasant Point
stayed within touching distance
of the leaders after edging
defending champions Ohoka by
one wicket after chasing down
204.
Sefton and Cheviot recorded
wins over Kaiapoi and Oxford
respectively, while Darfield had
the bye.
There are no matches this
weekend due to Canterbury
Anniversary Day, with the
competition set to resume on
Weedons will play host to
University to sponsor
Matatū rugby team
Lincoln University is poised
to announce its sponsorship
of South Island professional
women’s rugby team Matatū.
Signage for the team has
already gone up at the western
end of the university, where the
franchise is based.
Earlier this year, the council
contributed $60,000 from its
parks and reserves budget for a
field upgrade at the university.
The field will primarily be
used by Matatū under an agreement
signed in May between the
franchise, the council, and the
university.
In return, the council gets 40
hours of community use from the
field, which is expected to be used
primarily for Ellesmere Rugby
Sub Union representative games.
Matatū, which is part of the
Crusaders Limited Partnership,
said the sponsorship details
were still being finalised and
could not confirm when the
announcement would be made.
“It is still not finalised, but we
will be sure to put an advisory
out. There is just not too much
to say on it at this stage,” a
spokesperson said.
Council staff approved the
$60,000 spend, which they are
able to do without consulting
councillors.
Alongside the field use,
Matatū will also host a Girls
on the Go holiday session and
the council will get 10 tickets to
local Matatū games, which are
expected to be available for the
community.
We’re investing in your electricity network
Have your say on our plans
To continue providing the safe, reliable and resilient
power supply that you depend on, we must invest
more. This includes renewing ageing assets,
expanding capacity, and strengthening resilience.
Electricity use is changing, so we’re also making
the network smarter to support two-way energy
flows and technologies like solar and batteries –
giving you more choice and us more flexibility to
meet demand. While this means a small increase in
electricity distribution charges, you’ll benefit from
a reliable and future-ready network.
FOOD
The never-ending joy of roast lamb
From a hot roast one day to a
never-ending joy of cold cuts,
lamb is a versatile special treat,
writes Nigel Slater
I rarely roast a shoulder or leg
of lamb – they are expensive –
but like any roast, it feels like a
celebration. A special treat not
only to eat warm, but for the
meals that follow.

ROAST LAMB
Serves 5-6. Ready in 2 hours
Slow cooking produces a
particularly tender result,
although it is unlikely to be pink
inside, as it would be with a cut
roasted at high temperature.

Ingredients
2kg lamb shoulder
a little olive oil
8 anchovy fillets
3 bushy rosemary sprigs
8 thyme sprigs
200ml vegetable or chicken stock
or water
350g spring greens
250g shelled peas

Method
• Heat the oven to 180°C. Lay
the lamb in a large roasting tin,
then thoroughly rub all over with
olive oil.
• Season with sea salt and black
pepper. Pierce the fat in 15 or so
places, pushing 3-4cm deep into
the flesh.
• Finely chop the anchovies.
Pull the leaves from the rosemary
and thyme, then chop them
finely and mix with the chopped
anchovies. Push these down into
the slits in the lamb with your
fingers.
• Roast the lamb for an
hour and a half until the fat is
translucent, the colour of pale
honey.
• Remove the lamb from the tin
and set aside on a warm platter
to rest. I like to cover it with foil
at this point, to keep it nicely
warm.
• Trim and roughly chop the
stems of the greens, removing
the tender leaves and setting
them aside. (They will be used
later.) Place the roasting tin over
a moderate heat and pour in the
stock or water.
• Bring to the boil, then stir
with a wooden spatula or spoon
to dislodge all the roasted meat
juices from the pan, then add
the peas and stems of the greens
and cover the pan with foil to
allow the vegetables to cook in
their own steam. Leave for 4 or 5
minutes, turning once.
• Add the leaves of the greens
now, turning them in the hot
juices until they have wilted. Lift
all the vegetables on to a serving
dish.
• Turn up the heat under the
roasting tin and let it bubble for
a minute or two, then check the
seasoning. I like to add a little
red wine vinegar sometimes, or
perhaps a trickle of honey.
• Carve the lamb and serve
with the greens, peas and
roasting juices.
ROAST LAMB SANDWICHES WITH
CRUSHED PEAS AND WASABI
Enough for 4 open sandwiches
Lamb works very well when
eaten as a cold cut, but I think
it benefits from being used at
room temperature or, even
better, still slightly warm, rather
than fridge cold. So that will
make this a recipe for a Sunday
evening sandwich rather than
Monday night.
Ingredients
250g peas
1 tbsp wasabi paste
40g butter
4 thick slices sourdough bread
a little olive oil
salad leaves – mustard,
watercress, little gem lettuce
4 handfuls leftover roast lamb
roasting juices optional, but good
if you have some leftover
Method
• Put a saucepan with 100ml
water in it on to boil, salt it
lightly, then add the peas. Cook
until the peas are tender (3-4
minutes only if you are using
frozen peas, but 4-10 minutes if
using fresh, depending on their
age.)
• Drain the peas, add the
wasabi paste and butter, then
crush with a vegetable masher. I
like them to retain quite a bit of
texture, while others may prefer
to mash them to a smoother
consistency. Taste the mixture
and season if necessary.
• Toast the pieces of sourdough
bread lightly on both sides. I
have a preference for a few
charred edges on the crust.
• Sprinkle the surface of the
toast with a little olive oil, then
lay a few of the salad leaves on
each slice.
• Place a couple of spoonfuls
of the crushed pea mixture on
top of the leaves then add some
slices of the cold roast lamb.
• Salt the lamb generously,
then trickle over a few spoonfuls
of either olive oil or the delicious
hot roasting juices.
Get your pool in top condition
As summer approaches and the long,
hot days arrive, there’s nothing quite
like taking a refreshing dip in a pool. To
ensure your pool is in its best condition,
be prepared early and maintain both
its appearance and water quality. By
having your pool water tested regularly
at Swimart, you can eliminate the
guesswork involved in managing it and
enjoy peace of mind knowing that the
water is safe and healthy for swimmers.
Regular testing and chemical
treatment of pool water are essential
for maintaining water quality. Swimart
offers FREE in-store computerised water
testing and detailed reports to assist
you with your routine water testing.
Take a 200ml water sample to Swimart,
and you will receive a comprehensive
and accurate analysis that informs you
of the balance of your pH, calcium,
and total alkalinity levels. Glenn from
Swimart is available to discuss the
results and offer advice on your water
chemistry, including which supplies
and quantities you may need to keep
your pool in optimal, healthy condition.
Pools are a wonderful asset, and having
the correct water treatments not only
enhances your swimming experience
but also protects your pool equipment
from premature wear and tear.
This summer, Swimart can
improve your swimming experience
by transforming your pool into a
therapeutic mineral oasis. By adding
magnesium minerals along with your
regular water balancing chemicals,
you can enjoy the proven therapeutic
benefits of a magnesium-enriched
pool. Magnesium minerals help reduce
inflammation problems in the skin,
muscles, and nervous system, and
relieve tired and aching muscles. Water
with these minerals can also make
skin feel soft and smooth, improving
hydration, easing eczema and
psoriasis, and reducing roughness and
inflammation.
Keeping your patch productive
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Celery can be planted during
the next three or four weeks.
The old method of digging a
trench and filling it with compost
or manure mixed with soil
before planting has much to recommend
it, but celery will grow
well in any good soil.
Keep the plants well watered
to prevent them from running to
seed.
Cucumbers also need rich,
moist soil. Raised beds are best if
the soil is heavy.
This does not need to be
sophisticated - make a flat-topped
heap, starting with a couple of
sacks of horse manure to a depth
of 15cm to 20cm, then well-rotted
lawn clippings or compost and a
layer of soil.
A heap about 30cm high is sufficient.
Sow seeds in groups of
three at 60cm intervals along the
middle of the bed.
Covering with a cloche or
flower pots will speed germination
and shelter seedlings from
cold winds.
Once they are growing, remove
the covers and control growth of
side shoots by cutting them off,
one leaf beyond a fruit.
Cucumber plants need regular
watering. After rain, feed fruiting
plants with weak liquid manure,
the colour of Chinese tea.
Gardens benefit from regular
hoeing, especially as the ground
starts to dry after heavy rain at
this time of year.
Stirring the soil thoroughly
allows air and sun to enter and
keeps the weeds down. It also
reduces the amount of water
required as the loose soil acts as
mulch, reducing evaporation of
moisture in the soil.
Broccoli is hardier than its
close relative, cauliflower, and is
Nasturtiums will thrive and produce more flowers than leaves in the poorest
soils, provided they are in a warm, sunny position.
Not a true spinach, New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa) is invaluable for gardens that dry out in late summer. Allow 60cm
between plants and sow in groups of two or three seeds, thinning later. This plant prefers a hot, dry, sunny situation. PHOTOS: GETTY
easier to grow. Broccoli seed can
be sown now to mature in the
coldest months of the year.
Varieties include Shogun,
Purple Sprouting and the decorative-looking
Italian Precoce.
Ground cleared of early potatoes,
broad beans or peas can be
used for broccoli.
Plant seedlings out at the end
of December and during January.
Not a true spinach, New
Zealand spinach (Tetragonia
expansa) is invaluable for gardens
that dry out in late summer.
Allow 60cm between each
plant and sow in groups of two or
three seeds, thinning later.
This plant prefers a hot, dry,
sunny situation.
Growth is rapid and when
plants begin to spread, the growing
tips should be nipped out
so plenty of leafy shoot tips will
grow.
Cut these frequently and
always cook before eating.
FLOWERS
Roses appreciate heavy
manuring. This can be done by
mulching, watering with liquid
manure or top-dressing with
commercial rose fertilisers.
Make liquid manure from
sheep droppings or cow pats
by half-filling a bucket with
raw manure, topping up with
water and leaving for a couple
of weeks.
Dilute to the colour of weak
tea before applying to the base
of the plant after rain or a good
soaking with the hose.
Chrysanthemums can have
their centres pinched out,
encouraging them to send out
three or four strong side shoots
for good flowers in autumn.
Half-hardy annuals such as
asters, French marigolds and
zinnias can be planted out now,
ideally in rich soil.
Nasturtiums will thrive and
produce more flowers than
leaves in the poorest soils, provided
they are in a warm, sunny
position.
There are two types, trailing
- which can cover a large
area and will climb shrubs and
fences - and the compact varieties,
such as the Whirlybird
strain, sold in individual colours,
as well as mixes.
Salmon Baby is a semi-double
variety suitable for hanging
baskets, while Alaska and
Jewel of Africa have variegated
foliage.
The large seeds and fast
growth make nasturtiums a
good choice for introducing
young children to growing
flowers.
Fuchsias will benefit from a
top-dressing of compost or old
animal manure applied in early
summer to keep the soil in good
condition and retain moisture.
Gladioli should now be growing
strongly in warm districts.
Stake the plants if strong winds
are expected.
FRUIT
Pears, plums, apples, peaches
and nectarines on heavily-laden
trees should be thinned.
Unless this work is done
thoroughly, the crop will be
plentiful but small-sized and
often misshapen because of the
pressure from neighbouring
fruit.
Remove the centre, or king,
fruit first.
Thinning is also important
to maintain balance in doubleand
triple-grafted fruit trees.
If one graft looks weaker,
remove all the tiny fruit so
energy goes into strengthening
it, not into fruit production.
Gooseberry bushes put in this
year should be summer-pruned
soon in order to build up a wellshaped
bush for sun and air to
penetrate.
Pears, plums, apples, peaches and
nectarines on heavily-laden trees should
be thinned. Unless this work is done
thoroughly, the crop will be plentiful but
small-sized and often misshapen.
RAV4 rolls on:
Toyota’s hybrid
hero remains
the benchmark
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 7, Build Quality 8, Refinement 8, Space 7, Styling 6, Fuel Economy; on road
test average consumption 6.4L/100km, Value for money 7, Safety - 5-star ANCAP rating based on 2019 testing criteria
Price: $59,990
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
As in previous versions, the
Limited remains the luxury
standard-bearer in Toyota’s topselling
RAV4 SUV range – the
brand’s most popular passenger
vehicle globally. It’s poised for
another sales surge when the
all-new version arrives next
year.
The current model continues
to sell exceptionally well for a
vehicle that’s been on the urban
SUV scene for six years. Despite
its age, it remains a dominant
force. The switch to a hybridonly
lineup a few years ago has
kept it performing strongly well
into the twilight of its model
cycle.
Toyota’s hybrid systems are
among the best in the business,
thanks to decades of expertise.
For drivers wanting a greener
option, the RAV4 Hybrid offers
carbon emissions roughly 30%
lower than its petrol-powered
equivalent.
The next-generation RAV4
is expected to add a plug-in
hybrid option, already available
in some overseas markets
including the UK.
A well-balanced five-model
range means there’s something
for everyone.
The lineup starts with the
$48,790 GX and climbs to the
$59,990 flagship Limited tested
here – a price shared with the
off-road-focused Adventure
model.
The Adventure brings an
aggressive front end, 19-inch
wheels, and a commanding
stance, adding some X-factor to
the RAV4 stable. However, it’s no
hardcore off-roader and can’t
match the Subaru Forester’s
class-leading 220mm ground
clearance.
Powering the Limited is
Toyota’s acclaimed fourthgeneration
self-charging hybrid
drivetrain, based on a highly
efficient 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle
four-cylinder petrol engine
paired with a power-dense
electric motor.
Together, they produce a
healthy 163kW of combined
output. The result is lively,
responsive acceleration and
strong mid-range pulling power,
though performance tapers off
at higher revs – a common trait
among hybrids.
Hopefully, the next generation
(due within 9-12 months) will
address this with even more
advanced hybrid tech.
For now, the current model
remains an impressive showcase
of how far Toyota’s hybrid
systems have come in both
refinement and performance.
The well-sorted continuously
variable transmission (CVT)
performs almost flawlessly,
handling everything from
smooth highways to rough
gravel roads with control and
composure.
Throughout the test, it
consistently found the right gear
ratios for the terrain, leaving its
reputation further enhanced.
One reason buyers worldwide
continue to love the RAV4
is its practicality. There’s an
extraordinary amount of
passenger space and a generous
574-litre cargo area, plus plenty
of in-cabin storage.
Soft-touch surfaces add to the
Limited’s premium feel, while
the slim, low-profile dashboard
improves forward visibility.
Night driving is safer and
more relaxing thanks to
projector LED headlights and
fog lights. The front seats feature
10-way power adjustment,
heating, and ventilation – ideal
for both frosty mornings and
long trips.
Toyota’s comprehensive Safety
Sense suite provides strong
peace of mind, with features
including a pre-collision system
(with pedestrian and cyclist
detection), dynamic radar
cruise control, road sign assist,
blind-spot monitoring, rear
cross-traffic alert, reversing
camera, parking sensors, and
seven airbags.
The safety tempo remains
upbeat, with all-speed
dynamic radar cruise control,
a pre-collision system with
autonomous emergency braking
including pedestrian detection
and daylight cyclist detection,
and road sign assist.
“Limited” could also describe
its off-road ability – it’s happiest
tackling ski-field access roads
rather than rugged tracks. Still,
the independent suspension
delivers confident, nimble
handling across a range of New
Zealand road types.
It’s among the best-handling
vehicles in its class, effortlessly
managing both tight corners and
sweeping bends. Even on poorly
cambered or rough roads, the
suspension stays balanced and
composed.
Ride comfort is equally
impressive. The suspension
provides just the right blend of
travel and suppleness, creating
a well-cushioned, quiet ride that
glides over even rough rural
roads.
The test vehicle constantly
reminded me how much
Toyota has improved its chassis
dynamics – transforming the
RAV4 from a capable all-rounder
into a genuine front-runner.
It’s proof of what this
automotive giant can achieve
with its vast resources and
engineering know-how.
Notice for consultation on a proposed Enrolment Scheme amendment for
Leeston School
The Ministry of Education, after engagement with the board of Leeston School, has established a proposed
enrolment scheme amendment under the Education and Training Act 2020 to clarify boundaries. As part of this
process, we are consulting with the school’s community and with people living in the area for which the school is
a reasonably convenient school.
Under this scheme, students will be able to enrol if they live within the proposed home zone. The enrolment of
out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
A copy of the proposed enrolment scheme is available at https://www.education.govt.nz/have-your-say
If you have any feedback about the proposed enrolment scheme, please visit the website, read the information
and complete the survey before 12 December 2025.
NEW LISTING
498 LEESTON ROAD, SPRINGSTON
ADD VALUE HERE!
Located in the popular Springston area, this 8ha property offers the rare opportunity to add value. It would make a
fantastic first lifestyle property with plenty of scope to be rewarded for your input. The permanent four-bedroom
home is somewhat original, having had one owner from new, and would respond well to some enhancements.
The functional kitchen is set to capture the morning sun and leads through to a dining area and beyond to a large
living room with an open fire and sliding doors to a west-facing area complete with a veranda and shelter from
mature trees. The four bedrooms are all doubles and serviced by a centrally located bathroom with an adjoining
separate toilet and laundry. Outdoors, there is a large separate double garage and several sheds, comprising one
with a concrete floor and a high-span roof. This shed would make a great storage area with some TLC, and there is
also a hay barn-type shed ideal for additional storage. The land is in one paddock, leaving scope for you to subdivide
into multiple paddocks.
This property is being sold as a Deceased Estate by the Executors and is to be sold as viewed.
relax or entertain. Both bedrooms are generously proportioned, while a log burner and stylish kitchen with
gas cooking anchor the heart of the home.
Fully off-grid, the property runs on solar power with generator backup, a biolytix septic system, its own well,
Outdoor
Splendour
Just as any other room in
your home requires planning,
so do outdoor spaces. We
look at a few areas that bear
some careful consideration to
achieve a functional, stylish
and relaxing backyard retreat
this summer.
Outdoor rooms have their own
unique challenges. As well as giving
thought to architectural style,
colour palettes, traffic flow, spatial
requirements and comfort, it’s
important to factor in shelter from the
elements and privacy from the nextdoor
neighbours.
Important things to consider if you
are reinventing your outdoor area from
scratch or embarking on a big project
are orientation and layout. Exposure
to sun and protection from the wind,
proximity to the house, pool, and
views, and consideration for the kinds
of activities to accommodate cooking,
dining, entertaining, lounging, and sun
bathing, are also essential elements to
think about.
If you’re contemplating tackling
VONDOM
a large-scale project or even if your
outdoor area could benefit from some
bespoke elements, employ a landscape
architect and an interior designer
(many of whom have experience
designing outdoor areas). Many have
the ability to successfully design and
manufacture custom-made furniture
to suit your specific needs or have
access to discounted products that will
save you money. By bringing in the
professionals, you can rely on their
extensive knowledge and experience to
design a functional and beautiful space
you will love entertaining and relaxing
in.
Consider access between indoor
preparation areas to outdoor dining
areas for optimal practicality. Ideally
your outdoor area should be easily
accessible from the house, with food
preparation areas located near your
indoor kitchen to reduce trips back
and forth.
If this is not a viable option you
may want to think about designing a
dedicated area outdoors to a combined
cooking and dining area.
Heating is an additional benefit,
which will enable you to enjoy your
outdoor areas in comfort for longer.
Investigate the variety of options
on the market that best suits your
requirements and current set up.
Integrate an awning or sun sails to
patios adjoining the house or a sturdy
multi-directional umbrella for shade
over dining and lounge areas.
Gazebos and pergolas are standalone
structures at the bottom of the
garden or beside the pool are a good
way to provide respite from the sun
and wind.
Always work together with your
designer or builder to ensure the style
of any stand-alone structure is in
keeping with the architecture of your
home for a cohesive look.
Show your outdoor furniture at its best
The sun is starting to appear more regularly,
and temperatures hint at the warm summer days
ahead and time spent outdoors. It’s time to sort and
clean your outdoor furniture and be ready to take
advantage of outdoor living and entertaining. Here
is a simple guide to cleaning your furniture:
• Remove winter covers from outdoor furniture or
bring them out from inside storage.
• Check the manufacturer’s guidelines or
labels on your furniture for specific cleaning
recommendations.
• Remove any loose dirt, leaves, or cobwebs from
the furniture’s surface using a vacuum, broom or
brush.
• Mix a cleaning solution of mild detergent with
water. When cleaning, pay special attention to
areas with stains, bird droppings, or mould/mildew
growth.
• Clean stainless steel furniture using a sponge, a
soft brush and the cleaning solution. Metal furniture
might benefit from a coat of outdoor metal paint or
rust-resistant spray to prevent corrosion.
• Wooden furniture should be cleaned with a
damp microfibre cloth and solution. Once cleaned,
apply a wood sealer or protective finish (oil) to
prevent UV rays and moisture damage.
• The best way to clean wicker furniture is to
brush off or vacuum as much surface dust and grit
as possible. Then, use soapy water and cloth to
scrub away mildew.
• For fabric outdoor furniture, vacuum first, then
use soapy water and cloth.
• Rinse your furniture thoroughly with a garden
hose or the low-pressure setting on a pressure
washer.
• Outdoor furniture cushions should be removed
and cleaned according to their care instructions,
e.g., spot cleaned or gentle machine wash. Remove
and wash covers separately if they can be.
• Dry furniture completely with an old towel or
rag; leaving iron furniture wet may cause rust.
Extend your outdoor furniture’s life and keep it
fresh and inviting to make the most of your outdoor
living with regular cleaning and maintenance.
Outdoor feature ideas
Creating an attractive outdoor living
space you want to spend time in doesn’t
have to be expensive or require you
to be a landscape guru with advanced
landscaping skills.
In Selwyn, it is important to choose
more hardy plants that can withstand
the occasional frost, direct sunlight, and
strong, northwest gales. Native plants from
around the area are often suitable, as they
thrive in the weather, temperatures, soil,
and environment and generally require
less maintenance and watering. They also
attract native birds and insects. Another
option is alternatives to lawns that require
less maintenance and watering.
With the ever-increasing cost of food,
many homes are now opting for vegetable
or edible gardens or fruit trees. Fresh,
nutritious food grown at home is becoming
increasingly popular. Apart from lowering
the carbon footprint used to transport
produce, establishing home composting is
also a great way to use food scraps.
With smaller sections, your neighbours
are often closer to your fence line than
ever. Therefore, privacy is an important
consideration, and using privacy screens
or planting tall shrubs or trees can
help create a comfortable and secluded
environment. Plants also add to your
landscape design and act as effective
windbreaks and shade areas.
New builds often require landscaping,
allowing you to put your personal touch
on your section and make your space
your own. There are many ways to make
the most of your layout, and by adding
unique features, you can create an eyecatching
spot. One way is to install a water
feature. This can add visual interest and
provide a sense of serenity and calm.
More gardeners are now opting for
sustainable water management systems,
such as rainwater harvesting systems with
water tanks or drip irrigation systems,
to conserve water, especially during
summer. These features can minimise
the environmental impact of continual
watering. Another effective way to make
your space different is to place garden
sculptures from local artists in areas of
your yard to create a visual focal point.
By incorporating various features in
your outdoor living spaces, you can create
a functional yet inviting and relaxing
outdoor environment where you will love
spending time.
Accelerating success.
Walk this way
When renovating and designing your
home, it’s easy to get swept away in
colour schemes, lighting options, and
statement furniture pieces, but don’t
forget to take a look down and pay some
attention to what is underfoot.
Flooring helps set the foundation
for your home’s style, comfort and
functionality; but with so many options
to choose from you’ll need to carefully
consider what look you’re aiming for,
the cost and what will suit your lifestyle
best.
Most homeowners will opt for a mix
of flooring types – such as cosy carpets
for the bedroom, hardwearing tiles for
bathrooms, and easy to clean wooden
flooring for hallways.
An easy way to make your home feel
more cohesive and well-thought out is
to keep the same flooring throughout
the main ‘high traffic’ areas such as
hallways, bathrooms and kitchens.
For rooms that see a lot of footfall,
hard flooring is a great option – and
there are plenty of types to choose from.
Synthetic laminated flooring is
hardwearing, cost-effective and fade
resistant. Upgrades to technology mean
that laminates can now look almost
identical to real wood, or even marble,
floors but without the expensive price
tag.
Engineered wood flooring, which
comprises one layer of thin hardwood
on the surface and a solid layer of
plywood on the bottom, is another costeffective,
durable option and looks like
the real deal when its laid. However,
because it has that real timber top layer,
it can be prone to scratching. Some
engineered wood flooring can be sanded
and refinished, but as the layer is thin
this might only be possible once or
twice. As such, you should check
with the manufacturer before
attempting this and if in doubt,
give it a miss.
If wood isn’t your thing, then
tiles are available in huge range
of finishes, colours, textures and
materials meaning you’re bound
to find something to suit your
tastes and budget.
Brighten up your bathroom
with some colourful Portugueseinspired
tiles or keep things chic
and simple with large format
tiles in a marble-effect. They’re
also water resistant making them
ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and
laundries.
While carpets are ideal for
rooms that benefit from a cosy
touch, such as bedrooms and
lounges, a decent high-quality
carpet is suitable throughout your
home and offers warmth, comfort
and great sound absorption.
