From hip pain to cancer
Rugby-loving dad told he has three to 12 months left
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Two months ago, Rick Illes
was still struggling with
ongoing hip pain after slipping
on the running board while
getting into his vehicle in
August last year.
The 59-year-old had seen a
number of doctors, and was
on medications and cortisone
injections in a bid to fix it, but
nothing worked.
Finally, he was sent for an
MRI to find out why the pain
wasn’t improving.
The scan revealed a lump.
A biopsy confirmed it was a
cancerous adenocarcinoma
tumour growing on his left
hip.
Initially, Rick was told he
had a life expectancy of 18
months. But two weeks ago,
the news became more grim
– doctors said three to 12
months was more realistic.
“All of a sudden, it’s lifechanging,”
he said.
“There's been quite a few
tears, and in your head you're
going, ‘well, why me?’
“I've never smoked, I’ve
never taken drugs, I’ve lived a
reasonably clean life.
“I obviously had a few
drinks every now and again,
but I’m like, ‘how did this
happen to me?’”
His wife Lou was with him
for the diagnosis.
Consider taking
Vitamin K2 is needed to move the calcium from the
blood vessels into the bones. As we age, vitamin
K2 levels decline. This causes calcium plaque to
build in the blood vessels, increasing the chances
of a heart attack or stroke. Blood pressure also
increases. Only K2, as MK-7, has been shown to
support both bone and heart health.
VITAMIN K2 as MK-7 SUPPORTS:
- Reducing plaque buildup in blood vessels,
helping prevent a heart attack, stroke or organ
- Healthy blood circulation and blood pressure
- Correct calcium metabolism for strong bones
Underarm infamy to charity
gold for ‘awful’ beige kit
BY DIANE KEENAN
The retro beige cricket kit worn
by former cricket and rugby
international Brian McKechnie
during the infamous 1981
underarm incident has found a
new home – and raised $22,000
for charity.
The uniform, one of the most
recognisable in Kiwi sporting
history, went under the hammer
at the annual BrainTree
Charity Golfing with the Stars
tournament at Clearwater.
After a bout of spirited
bidding, the famous outfit
was snapped up by Brendan
Prendergast, an original
BrainTree board member and
tournament founder, with Jason
Millar from Charter Transport,
fellow board member Dave
Gibbons, and Murray and
Andrew Smith from Mitre 10.
Donated by Arrowtown’s
David Skeggs, the kit’s sale
will help fund BrainTree,
the Papanui wellness centre
supporting people living with
neurological conditions such as
multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s
and dementia.
Prendergast said the group
was keen to see the kit end
up somewhere like the New
Zealand Cricket Museum or at
Te Papa.
“We would also consider
on-selling it to the right buyer
with profits going to BrainTree.
We bought the kit, which holds
a special place in New Zealand
history, to ensure it gets looked
after and ends up in the right
place,” he said.
The underarm incident
remains one of sport’s most
infamous moments.
With New Zealand needing six
off the final ball to tie the third
match of the 1981 World Series
Cup at the Melbourne Cricket
Ground, Australian captain
Greg Chappell told his brother
Trevor to bowl underarm –
leaving McKechnie helpless
to do little more than pat the
ball away, handing the win to
Australia.
The move sparked outrage
around the world, even drawing
condemnation from then-Prime
Minister Rob Muldoon.
Brian McKechnie, right reunited with the beige kit from cricket’s
infamous underarm incident, alongside new owner Brendan
Prendergast (middle) and volunteer Murray Burgess. The $22,000
piece of Kiwi sporting history was sold at auction following the
BrainTree charity golf tournament.
McKechnie, one of 36 stars
from seven sporting codes who
teed off in the tournament, said
he originally gave the kit away
for a charity function about
30 years ago when Sir Clifford
Skeggs, David Skeggs’ father,
bought it.
“I hoped the incident would
be over the next day, but for
about 25 years I used to get calls
on February 1 saying ‘do you
know what day it is?’,” he said.
“The beige uniform itself
was awful to wear. That day at
the MCG it was around 35degC
at ground level and the outfit
stuck to you in the heat.”
Despite the memories,
McKechnie was delighted the
uniform has raised funds for a
good cause.
“I’m thrilled it has come to
BrainTree, which does a terrific
job for people with neurological
conditions.”
Former All Black and
Crusader Ben Blair and his GVI
Logistics team took the golf
tournament honours, edging
out a side led by former NZ
Warrior and Kiwis rugby league
star Joe Vagana, also from GVI.
Golfing with the Stars
organiser Michelle Morrow said
she was “overwhelmed and
humbled” by the support for
the tournament.
“Around 240 people are
involved at so many levels, with
180 players, including stars,
along with our sponsors and
volunteers. The feedback is
positive – everyone is looking
forward to next year’s event.”
The tournament, now in
its fifth year, provisionally
raised $285,000 – a figure
which Morrow said makes
Golfing with the Stars the
highest-earning charity golf
tournament in the country.
Among the star-studded
field were cricketers Mark
Greatbatch, Mark Richardson,
Paul McEwan, Rod Latham,
Chris Harris and Stephen
Fleming; Olympians Hamish
Kerr, Eric Murray and Moss
Burmester; rugby players Willi
Heinz, Christian Cullen, Taine
Randell, Colin Slade, Israel
Dagg, Graeme Bachop and Casey
Laulala; league legend Mark
Graham and former Kangaroo
Julian O’Neill; and footballers
Alan Stroud and Wynton Rufer.
Proceeds from the early
tournaments helped fund
BrainTree’s $8.1 million
wellness centre, which opened
in 2022. Now, the money
supports its operations and
services – vital, as BrainTree
receives no central government
funding and relies on
community events like the golf
tournament to keep running.
Contactless
payment
on public
transport
starts in Chch
BY KEILLER MACDUFF
The first stage of a national
integrated ticketing system
on buses and ferries has been
rolled out in Christchurch.
Motu Move was launched
on Monday.
The option to pay with
contactless debit or credit
cards and digital payments
like Apple Pay and Google Pay
on phones or smart watches
will work on three hundred
buses, and ferries, across
Christchurch, Waimakariri
and Selwyn – but only for
those paying full fare.
Concession holders will
have to continue to use their
Metrocards until the next
phase of the $1.4 billion
project is rolled out.
Card readers allowing
users to ‘tag off’ will be
introduced in later stages, as
will a physical Motu Move
card.
Wellington is up next. It
is hoped the whole country,
except for Marlborough and
the West Coast, will be part
of the integrated system by
the end of 2027. – RNZ
Community rallies around family
“You both look at each other
and you just see your whole life
go, just like that,” Lou said.
“And these people sitting in
front of you are just to the point
– they’re clinical, they gave a
box of tissues and said ‘we'll
leave you to it, take a minute
to process what we’ve just told
you.’
“I think we were both just in
shock.”
When the MRI first showed a
lump, doctors thought it might
be a giant cell tumour, a benign
bone tumour typically found in
joints.
“We were thinking, ‘great,
once this is confirmed, they’ll
just open it up, cut it out, close
it up, business as usual’,” Rick
said.
“It wasn’t until they did
the biopsy (about two weeks
later), and came back about
a week after that and said it’s
cancerous.”
The cancer in Rick’s hip was
secondary. The primary tumour
was later revealed to be throat
cancer in his oesophagus.
The Rolleston resident had
noticed swelling in his neck
in the past, but doctors had
brushed it off as a thyroid issue.
“I said, ‘look, it’s sore to push,
it’s sore if I yawn’, but it sort of
got fobbed off as more thyroid
stuff and other bits and pieces.”
A year ago, his GP referred
him for a CT scan on his neck,
which was declined by Health
New Zealand due to high
The Illes family’s focus is on taking care of Rick, who is battling stage four throat cancer. From left: Liam, Rick, Lou
and Tyler.
demand for the service.
Rick believes an earlier scan
could have revealed the cancer
sooner.
“They’re obviously busy,
whatever it is, but for me, that’s
not really an excuse,” he said.
“If it had been cottoned on to
earlier, it would have raised a
whole lot more around maybe
the hip and the throat.
“I don’t know how it exactly
works, but maybe rather than it
now being at stage four, maybe it
was at stage three, I don’t know.
“I’ve never smoked, I’ve
never taken drugs, I’ve
lived a reasonably clean
life, I obviously had a
few drinks every now
and again, but I’m like,
‘how did this happen to
me?’”
Rick Ills
“Maybe there were options for
it to be cured then, rather than
12 months later.”
Lou said there were other
signs something more serious
was going on than just a sore
hip and a swollen throat.
“Over the space of this 12-18
months, he’s lost like 20kg, and
not one doctor has investigated
that other than asking if it was
‘intentional’.”
Said Rick: “The hip was the
one that was causing me grief.
It’s one of those ironic things,
because the hip is secondary
cancer, whereas the oesophagus
is the main cancer, but I hadn’t
had a sore throat, I hadn’t had
anything other than (swelling).”
Four weeks ago, when a stent
was put in his throat to allow
him to eat, Rick was told by the
surgeon he had just 18 months
to live.
But two weeks later, his
oncologist gave him a new
estimate – three to 12 months.
left reeling after shock diagnosis
“Probably one of the worst
things is that when you go
along to see the doctors, you're
waiting for just a little glimmer
of something to go, ‘oh, that's
good’,” he said.
“Then he says ‘three to 12
months’. What do you mean?
That’s the hardest thing to take
in.”
“That hit hard,” said Lou.
“Because suddenly you’ve lost
six, eight, 10 months of what
you’ve been told.
“We just kept getting
slammed with something every
time we went to the doctor, so
we started dreading these visits
because you think, ‘well, what
are we going to be told now?’”
Rick is unable to continue his
job in recruitment, while Lou
now works from home in land
registration. Their sons, Liam,
25, and Tyler, 22, live with them
and do what they can to help.
“Telling the boys was the
hardest part,” said Lou.
“Your friends is one thing, but
telling your boys or your family
is very different in the way that
they respond.
“We just sort of sat and
watched their faces, and you
could see, we had just had our
world ripped out from under us
– and we’ve just done the same
to them.”
The family is selling their
house and downsizing, and also
selling their caravan to adjust
to a single income. Christmas
plans to go camping in Twizel
with extended family have been
shelved.
Rick Illes with his sons Tyler, left, and Liam after a rugby game for Rolleston this
year. The family have been part of the club for 20 years through playing, coaching
and volunteering, and club president Nicky Ruki has set up a Givealittle page to
support Rick.
Rick is currently undergoing
radiotherapy and trying other
ways to slow the cancer’s
spread – taking vitamin C
pills and other supplements
while also cutting sugars and
carbohydrates from his diet,
which some cancers can feed
on. He said the cost of that is
around $700.
“It’s quite tough to gather that
together, but our friends so far
have been great and I’ve got a
big family, so they’ve been good.
“The idea is to beat it, obviously.
The doctors don’t get to
play God in this case.”
The family has a long
association with the Rolleston
Rugby Club. Liam and Tyler
played for the division 2 side
this year. Rick has played
golden oldies and coached his
sons’ junior teams, while Lou
has helped out on club days.
President Nicky Ruki, a close
friend of the family, has set up a
Givealittle page to help them.
“We were pretty overwhelmed
with that sort of
offer,” said Lou.
“That’s that community spirit
– the boys were five when they
started playing there, so they've
grown up through the grades,
and you do become really good
friends with the parents as
well.”
Rick said he was feeling okay
and taking things one day at a
time. His only restriction is the
pain in his hip – he has had a
pin put in his thigh because the
bone there has become brittle.
“A little bit sore, a little bit of
pain, but in general I feel okay.
If I could move on this leg, I
could hop in the car and go to
the mall for a wander around.
I’m not feeling like I have to
vomit or anything else like
that.
“Part of me almost feels some
of the things we’re doing are
working. It’s only been a couple
of weeks, but it's so early on
I could just be fooling myself
with that conversation too.”
Rick said he appreciates the
help he has had from friends
and family.
“It does become quite a
challenge. We've been very
fortunate because we’ve got
really good friends that have
always just been there, all the
time, for anything, which makes
such a huge difference.
“They’ll buy biscuits for the
dogs, knowing that it’s just
another thing for us to have
to worry about, or other little
things just to help out.”
‘Pain now for gain later’ mantra as
BY GEOFF SLOAN
Frustrated at being held up by
roadworks across Christchurch?
You are not alone.
Several large-scale projects
are taking place at once, creating
lane closures, detours and
extra congestion for drivers.
Some have taken to social
media to express frustration
over the number of roadwork
sites.
“Yes it is the first time I have
seen an entire city basically
shut down, but also yes, people
are very angry . . . And I’m one
of them.”
“Yeah this is a big problem.
Try to take an alternative route
to avoid roadworks only to run
into more roadworks!”
“Halswell was ridiculous. Not
only did they do Halswell Rd
but they felt it was a great time
to also cut off Sparks Rd which
was the alternative route. Crazy
to do both at once.”
Cyclists are also joining the
debate.
“I’m having a great time on
my bike. Zooming past cars. You
all should try it.”
“I regularly bike by 80-100
cars along Moorhouse between
Tower Junction and Durham
St New World/Colombo-ish in
afternoon rush hour.”
The city council says road
resurfacing projects are prioritised
each year between October
1 and March 31, as the work
requires warmer ground and
One way east-bound traffic on Sparks Rd at the Hendersons Rd intersection, Halswell. Inset – Halswell Rd improvements
surface temperatures, as well as
stable weather conditions.
It owns and maintains 3938
roads that stretch for more
than 2000kms, and is the road
controlling authority for most
within Christchurch.
New Zealand Transport
Agency Waka Kotahi also owns
and operates a network of roads
throughout the city, including
SH75 Halswell Rd, which has
been undergoing improvements
since May 2024.
The two-and-a-half year project
to upgrade the key bus
route with new bus lanes and
safer options for walking and
cycling involves significant
work on underground services
such as drainage and wastewater
systems.
The project is expected to be
completed in October 2026.
Preparations for increased
foot traffic ahead of the new
stadium Te Kaha opening in
April have prompted upgrade
work at two of the city’s busiest
intersections.
Key route Moorhouse Ave
sees around 24,000 vehicle
movements daily.
Work started last month to
improve the intersection of
Moorhouse Ave, Gasson St and
Madras St. At the same time, the
intersection of Moorhouse Ave,
Barbadoes St and Waltham Rd
is receiving the same treatment
– just a few hundred metres
away.
The intersections are key
access points for Ara students,
as well as people who will be
heading to Te Kaha.
City council infrastructure
general manager Brent Smith
said they were making the two
intersections more accessible
for the growing south-east
central neighbourhood.
“We’re putting in new
crossings to make the
intersections safer for people
moving around this busy part of
town,” he said.
While roadworks around the
stadium are largely complete,
the final phase of the Te Kaha
Surrounding Streets project has
seen lane closures put in place,
reducing Madras, Tuam, and
Barbadoes Sts to one lane.
It is to allow a final layer of
asphalt on footpaths adjacent to
We’re investing in your electricity network
Have your say on our plans
To continue providing the safe, reliable and resilient
power supply that you depend on, we must invest
more. This includes renewing ageing assets,
expanding capacity, and strengthening resilience.
Electricity use is changing, so we’re also making
the network smarter to support two-way energy
flows and technologies like solar and batteries –
giving you more choice and us more flexibility to
meet demand. While this means a small increase in
electricity distribution charges, you’ll benefit from
a reliable and future-ready network.
roadworks cause delays
Safety upgrades for two of the city’s busiest intersections on Moorhouse Ave are
expected to be finished this month.
the stadium and the installation
of street furniture, bike stands,
and a new bus shelter.
Work is expected to be
completed in mid-December.
The city council said it
co-ordinates road renewal
projects with other works, such
as upgrading underground
pipes or utility maintenance, to
avoid having to dig up newly
resurfaced roads later.
On the city council website,
it says the ‘pain now for gain
later’ approach can lead to
more extensive, but less frequent
disruptions.
Many parts of the city have
ageing infrastructure, particularly
pipes, that need
replacement or upgrading
to accommodate population
growth and create a more resilient
network, they said.
The city council advises
motorists to be patient, plan
their route ahead of time and
drive to the speed limits to keep
themselves and those working
on the roads safe.
Safety and water upgrades on
Harewood Rd start next week.
The roading work includes
installing traffic signals at the
intersection of Harewood, Gardiners
signalised pedestrian crossing
at Harewood School, and
widening the pedestrian refuge
“These improvements will
make this busy stretch of Harewood
users,” said city council planning
and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury.
Stormwater and water supply
pipes in the area are also being
upgraded.
“Our transport and three
waters teams have co-ordinated
their work in the area to minimise
disruption by taking a ‘one
ensures that once we leave, we
won’t need to carry out planned
road works in these streets
again for a number of years,”
Bradbury said.
A ‘super week’ is planned
for seven days from January
Quick-thinking volunteer prevents
blaze from spreading to building
BY KEES CHALMERS
An information centre volunteer
transformed into a firefighter
when a vehicle parked outside
started to go up in smoke.
John Thacker
was sitting
behind the desk
at the Lyttelton
Information
Centre a when
he saw smoke
spilling out
from under
the bonnet of
a white fourwheel
drive.
John Thacker
Fearing it could spread to the
information centre or the car
could explode, he grabbed a fire
extinguisher off the wall.
“It was the first time we’ve
had the extinguisher off the
wall,” he said.
Thacker told an onlooker to
call 111.
After checking no-one was
inside, he started extinguishing
the side of the vehicle closest to
the Oxford St building, as he was
concerned the verandah could
catch fire.
“It would’ve gone up like a
packet of crackers,” he said.
The flames still managed to
melt the guttering, while smoke
went into the building.
Just when Thacker thought his
work was done, the fire began
Lyttelton Information Centre volunteer John Thacker sprang into action when he
saw smoke coming from a nearby car.
to flare up again. He kept going,
but eventually the extinguisher
ran out of powder.
Luckily, the fire brigade
arrived soon after, about 15 minutes
after the original call, and
quickly controlled the blaze.
They opened up the bonnet
“like a can” and used water to
extinguish the flames, Thacker
said.
Meanwhile, the driver and
passengers – two women and a
young child – came around the
corner and saw what had happened
to their car.
Thacker invited them into the
centre for a glass of water.
“I think they got a bit of a shock,
but they were grateful for what
everyone had done for them.”
Garage fire
came close
to reaching
family home
BY KEES CHALMERS
A double garage fire in Sumner
came within minutes of
spreading to an adjacent house
where a family was sleeping.
The couple, and their nephew,
were woken by firefighters,
knocking on a window of their
Denman St house about 4am last
Thursday.
A neighbour raised the alarm
after smelling smoke, and when
the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
arrived, the double garage
was already engulfed in flames.
The householder told The Star
the incident was a “bit of a blur”.
Firefighters wearing breathing
apparatus used two hose lines
to bring the blaze under control,
taking about an hour to fully
extinguish it.
Sumner fire chief Daryl Sayer
said quick action by neighbours
prevented the fire from
spreading.
“This was a good example
where prompt action by neighbours
in calling 111 resulted
in the fire being contained to
the garage, with the adjacent
house suffering no significant
damage.”
“It was imminent – if it had
been left for much longer, it
would have caught onto the
house.”
Back in the garden at last
Sue spent three years watching
her beloved garden slowly turn
into what she calls “a beautiful
mess” – not by choice, but
because kneeling had become her
enemy.
“I’d always been the gardener in
our family,” Sue explains from her
now-immaculate vegetable patch.
“My husband jokes he has black
thumbs. But there I was, pointing
and instructing like some sort of
garden general who couldn’t get
into the trenches.”
The 66-year-old retiree had
gradually surrendered tasks
she once loved. First went the
By last year, she was directing
operations from a chair while
her husband did his best with the
spade.
The frustration peaked when her
three grandchildren visited.
“They wanted to plant
strawberries with Nana,” Sue
recalls. “I had to sit on a stool
and supervise. My 5-year-old
granddaughter asked why I
couldn’t get down with them. That
hurt more than my knees ever
did.”
Sue had tried various remedies
over the years. “Nothing quite
worked. Some helped a bit, but I’d
given up on getting back to proper
gardening.”
That changed when a friend
mentioned Koru FX. “She raved
about this natural cream made
here in New Zealand. Said it was
the only thing that helped her
tennis elbow.”
Sceptical but desperate, Sue
picked up a bottle from her local
pharmacy. “I figured I’d tried
everything else. What was one
more cream?”
What impressed Sue was
the natural formula. Koru FX
combines 16 natural ingredients
in a triple-action approach.
Warming oils like black pepper
She applied it morning and
night to her troublesome knees.
“The first thing I noticed was it
didn’t smell medicinal. Just a nice
peppermint scent. And it absorbed
quickly, not greasy like others I’d
tried.”
Within a week, Sue noticed
something remarkable. “I was
deadheading roses and realised
I’d been bending for five minutes
without thinking about it. That
hadn’t happened in years.”
Two weeks later came the real
test. “The grandkids were visiting
again. My granddaughter asked if
we could plant spring vegetables.
I said yes without thinking, then
panicked.”
But Sue managed 40 minutes
in the garden with them. “Proper
gardening, on my knees in the dirt.
My granddaughter’s face when I
got down beside her – priceless.”
The improvement has been
steady since. Sue’s garden, once
he’s been demoted from head
he still helps with the heavy
When asked what she’d tell
others in similar situations, Sue
was my new normal.”
She pauses at her garden gate,
Families feeling
the pinch as beef
mince price soars
BY TIM CRONSHAW
Beef mince is shifting from
a budget-friendly staple to a
luxury item for families battling
steep grocery bills.
Once a reliable way to stretch
the food budget, beef mince has
risen by about $3.50 a kilogram
in the past year.
Statistics New Zealand
data shows the average price
climbed 17.5% to $23.11
per kilogram in the year
to September.
Shoppers are now buying
smaller portions,
shopping around, or turning
to chicken and pork
to make their money go
further.
However, the Christchurch
City Mission said
the escalating weekly
grocery bill was leaving many
low-income families with few
otheroptions to cover their
needs.
City Missioner Corinne
Haines said mince had become
too expensive for low-income
families.
“It was always known as the
cheap meat option, but now our
foodbank and financial mentor
clients can’t afford it.
Corinne Haines
“Sausages and chicken are
probably the cheaper options
now. The high cost of food is a
significant problem for all our clients,”
she said.
Families already struggling
with bills and debt had long relied
on trimming food costs to get by,
but that was no longer possible,
she said.
“Mince used to be a way you
could buy a pack and split it into
two or three meals by
adding extra bits, like vegetables
or pasta, to make it
go further, but price rises
are making this way of saving
money more difficult.”
Haines said the mission
valued all its meat donations,
but mince was prized
because it could be used in
so many ways.
Priority was being given
to large families ahead of individuals
to help maximise the benefit.
Infometrics principal economist
Brad Olsen said the high beef
mince prices were hitting everyone
at the moment.
“There was a period where we
were completely losing our minds
over butter, and mince appears to
be the new butter at the moment
in terms of the price increases
coming through,” he said.
The price of budget-friendly beef mince is becoming out of the range of everyday New Zealanders.
Olsen said beef
mince prices
had continued to
push up during
the past 18
months because
of international
supply and
demand.
“You don’t have Brad Olsen
nearly as much
supply of beef in the global
market, and if you look at the
likes of the US, even with the
tariffs they are still having to
take a fair amount of NZ beef
because they don’t have as
many cattle themselves.”
Olsen said it could be worse
as increased prices for cattle at
slaughter were higher over the
past year.
Mince prices were unlikely to
drop any time soon as there was
little change in beef demand
around the world, he said.
In comparison, sausages
average $13.52/kg, pork loin
PHOTO: GETTY
chops $16.82/kg and chicken
breast $15.54/kg.
A Stats NZ spokesperson said
lamb chops averaging $21.70/
kg were similar to $23.11/kg for
beef mince, but beef blade steak
was $28.70/kg and porterhouse
steak averaged $43.26/kg.
A year ago, sausages averaged
$12.50/kg, pork loin chops were
$17.14/kg, chicken breast was
$15.65/kg, lamb chops $18.31/
kg, blade steak $24.88/kg, and
porterhouse and sirloin $36.65/kg.
Vacant Arthur’s Pass lodge
to be reopened as a pub
The Chalet, an unoccupied twostorey
lodge at Arthur’s Pass, sold
at auction for $250,000 – more
than $1 million below its RV.
It was bought by hospitality
entrepreneur Peter Whittaker,
who owns The Rockpool
and Bridies Bar & Bistro, in
partnership with a West Coast
restaurateur.
“We’re going to renovate the
place and open it up as a tavern,”
Whittaker told The Press.
“It’s in a nice spot, right in a
national park.”
Whittaker
said he did not
have a timeline
for the
renovation.
The 2024 rating
valuation
for the chalet
was $1.26m.
Bayleys listing
agent Kate Mullins, who
Kate Mullins
marketed the property with colleague
Ben Deans, told OneRoof
the price reflected the lodge’s
condition and the seller’s
motivation.
“They wanted it gone and they
wanted to meet the market (and)
move on,” she said.
Mullins’ listing urged buyers
to “bring your builder, your
architect and your imagination”,
warning the property was “not
for the faint of heart”.
“It needs some TLC, that’s for
sure,” the agent told OneRoof.
The Chalet was built by Swiss ski
instructor Hans Bohny and his wife
Patricia in the 1960s. The two-storey
building was sitting empty and sold
as-is, where-is.
The vendors paid $595,000
for the property in 2009,
and then leased it to an
accommodation provider who
ran it as The Chalet before
closing it 10 years ago. The
lodge had a dining room, a
commercial kitchen, a bar, and
13 guest rooms, but had been
empty for years and required
significant work, Mullins told
OneRoof.
She said it had attracted
inquiries from around New
Zealand before selling late last
month.
The European-inspired
property on SH73 has a long
history in the village. It was built
by Swiss ski instructor, climber
and stonemason Hans Bohny and
his wife, Patricia, in the 1960s.
The couple opened it as a coffee
shop before expanding into an
800sq m building with a pub and
accommodation. They ran it
for 30 years before selling it in
the 1990s.
Support for a ban
on fireworks sales
Thanks for the opportunity to
complain about this issue.
We got such a shock by the
loud bangs, we thought they
were explosions from a factory
or something. My partner even
got the car to have a look what
on earth was going on.
In the meantime, our dog,
crawled under our bed shaking
like a leaf the entire time and
for an hour afterwards.
Ban all fireworks.
- Tanya Jenkins
Fireworks must be banned.
Guy Fawkes has no relevance
today.
They’re a fire hazard, cruel to
animals, annoying late at night
and a waste of money.
- Juliette Jones
I have no issue with public
fireworks displays.
However I strongly feel
fireworks sales to the general
public should be banned.
People stock up on the three
days they are able to purchase
them (November 2-5).
This means they are let off
at any stage of the year, often
really late. Inconsiderate to
people and a real issue for
family pets.
and Canterbury Next Week
Once again, the gold and collectables buyers from
Wellington company John Bertrand Collectables are
visiting Christchurch and Canterbury next week. Mr
Tony Grant from the company says, “If you are
downsizing or wanting to dispose of things because
they no longer serve any purpose to you or your family
bring them in”. “Next week will be a great opportunity
to have any items you want to sell assessed by our
buyers” said Mr Grant. Particularly wanted are Gold
and Silver (in any of its forms) and Collectables such as
Coins, Banknotes, War Medals,
Old Wind-up Watches and
other interesting Small
Collectables.
“We are keen buyers,
especially of the items in the
list below” said Mr Grant.
“Nothing is too small for our
consideration. We are just as
happy buying 1 item as we are
buying 1,000 items” he said.
The buyers will be in
Christchurch and Canterbury
next week. (see details below).
As Tony Grant points out “If
you are in doubt about any
items you may wish to sell,
bring them along for an instant
appraisal.”
Gold & Silver
At Historically
High Prices
D uring these
uncertain times
we have seen a sharp
increase in the price of
precious metals. The gold price in New
Zealand is at near record levels so gather
up all your unwanted items and take
them along to the buyers. Tony Grant says
“We can buy gold items in all forms,
including Jewellery (Rings, Chains,
Brooches etc), Coins (Sovereigns and the
like), Alluvial (River Gold), virtually
anything, even Gold Teeth! We also need
all Sterling Silver including Cups, Tea
Services, Cutlery and Old Coins” he said.
Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes
arly New Zealand Banknotes dated
Ebefore 1932 are currently fetching
big money! This is according to Mr Tony
Grant, author of the John Bertrand New
Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue.
Mr Grant is in Christchurch and
Canterbury next week on a buying trip
for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and
would be very keen to see any of these
issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any
undamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound
T
Interesting Small
Collectables Wanted
he buyers from John Bertrand
(Collectables) Ltd, visiting Christchurch
and Canterbury next week, are happy to
look at any interesting items, for example
Rolex, Men’s Omega, Breitling and gold
watches etc. Also wanted, pre 1920’s picture
postcards, Maori and Pacific artefacts, old
fountain pens and other small antique or
historical items.
“If you have something unusual which
you would like to sell, please bring it
into one of our venues, we would like the
chance to at least have a look at it” said
Tony Grant, buyer for the Company. “We
will consider anything which may be of
interest to a collector” he said.
banknote from a New Zealand trading
bank dated 1932 or before.
Denominations of five pounds and higher
would be worth from $700. “Any banknote
dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least
$1000” said Mr Grant.
Also purchased are any Reserve Bank
of New Zealand pre-decimal issues,
especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas
banknotes are also wanted, especially
Collectors Need War Medals
ADVERTISEMENT
urrently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big
demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all
wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the
Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later
Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and
Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa
around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are
needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New
Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.
General service medals from both the First and Second
World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined
these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group
of medals has any special award for bravery such as the
Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for
Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add
great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John
Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals,
some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure
what to do with. These are better off in the hands of collectors
who will look after them. We will be happy to look at any war
medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.
Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity
o you have a bunch of old coins sitting around in your
drawers and cupboards? You just never know what
rarities may be lurking there. The advice from Tony Grant
from John Bertrand (Collectables) Limited is to “bring them
in and let us have a look”. “No need to sort anything out just
bring them in ‘as is’ and please don’t clean them! We can go
through coin accumulations and collections fairly quickly”
he said. The buyers are particularly keen to buy pre 1946
New Zealand Silver Coins and World Silver Coins. “In any
event we will buy All Coins,” said Mr Grant.
New role for returning Hammett
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Former All Blacks and Crusaders
hooker Mark Hammett has
returned to St Thomas of
Canterbury College as director
of rugby to oversee the school’s
programme.
The 53-year-old was head
coach of the school’s first XV from
2021-2024 before taking up a
short-lived role at Christchurch,
departing before the start of the
club season to take time out while
recovering from the effects of
what he believes was long Covid.
Hammett said
his new role would
involve a broader
focus across all levels
of the sport at
the college, rather
than just the top
team.
“From a personal
perspective,
it’s great fun coaching
because it’s
Kieran Coll
what I love doing, but in terms
of bang for buck for what I can
offer across the board for all
the coaches, I wanted to bring
myself up so I could continue to
upskill and support the wider
programme.
“So that’s what we have
designed this year and what we
would really like to do.”
Hammett, who has also coached
the Hurricanes and Highlanders
in Super Rugby, said he always
felt he would end up back at St
Thomas.
“I had an absolutely fantastic
four years in my previous role. I
Mark Hammett will officially start as St Thomas of Canterbury College’s new director of rugby next year.
stay pretty connected to the place
and it was probably something I
was always going to move back
to,” he said.
“For me it’s a wonderful challenge.
I’m passionate about
trying to support young people
and upskill coaches within their
strengths.
“I don’t want to turn them into
Mark Hammetts but if we can
help them with their coaching
and teaching pedagogy then everyone
succeeds.”
Hammett, a St Thomas old boy,
said it was meaningful to be able
to help out at the school.
“When I went back, it felt like
home, it was really easy to fit in.”
First XV head coach Kieran
Coll, who was Hammett’s assistant
before taking over this year,
said he was looking forward to
working with him again.
“It was awesome working
alongside him and I learnt a lot.
He helped me grow as a coach
through that time and it will be
good to have him back in the
mix,” Coll said.
“It will be in a different
capacity, but it’s going to be
really beneficial for all our
coaches.”
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Hammett’s new role officially
begins next year, but
he is already helping with
preparations.
“I’m probably in there two
days a week at the moment. A
lot of planning is happening
this side of Christmas.”
He was excited to get into the
job properly.
“I love seeing the growth
of our young men, I think it
(rugby) is such a powerful
tool, particularly around our
engagement and our ability for
that to support the academic
side of the college.”
Comeback
win boosts
valiant Park
BY SAM COUGHLAN
A remarkable come-from-behind
win has seen Lancaster Park
climb the Metro premiership
table ahead of a crunch match
with defending champions
Burnside.
Lancaster Park defeated Riccarton
by 45 runs on Saturday
despite facing a 193-run firstinnings
deficit.
Player-coach Scott Duggan led
the fightback with a century as
his side posted 343, before Riccarton
were bowled out for 105,
with Zach Hedgcock taking five
wickets.
Riccarton will meet St Albans
tomorrow.
Burnside and Old Boys drew
after Old Boys batted through
the day, with Nic Clark and Solomon
Nash both scoring centuries.
Burnside next face East Shirley.
United’s final hopes fade
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Christchurch United need a miracle in
their final three games if they are to
reach next month’s National League
final.
The Rams’ 3-0 loss to Birkenhead
United on Sunday dropped them to
seventh on the table, seven points
behind second-place Wellington
Olympic, who have a game in hand.
A loss to Western Springs next week
would officially rule them out of
contention for a top-two finish – a sharp
decline for a side that won its opening
two games but has gone winless in the
five games since.
United would need to win their
remaining matches and hope for a string
of favourable results elsewhere to qualify
for the final.
Meanwhile, Coastal Spirit will take on
Wellington Phoenix Reserves as they aim
to climb off the bottom of the table after
a 3-1 loss to Miramar Rangers on Sunday.
Coastal and the Phoenix occupy the
bottom two spots on four points each,
Big win seals fourth straight
Canterbury AFL title for Blues
The Blues Football Club celebrated captain
Jay Johnson’s 150th appearance with a
fourth consecutive grand final victory,
beating Christchurch Bulldogs 85-39 in
Saturday’s decider at QEII Park. The Blues
kicked 13 goals and seven behinds to the
Bulldogs’ six goals and three behinds to
run away with the 46-point win, the first
time a team has won four years in a row.
but the Phoenix have the edge on goal
difference.
The Canterbury United Pride will look
to snap a four-game losing run away at
fellow strugglers Petone on Saturday.
The Pride sit in ninth after a 5-0 defeat
to West Coast Rangers at the weekend,
while Petone are eighth.
They said it
“It will be a battle
of attrition. In years
gone by they’ve
been known for
chucking the ball
about, but they’ve
got some big
physical lumps in
there now so we’ll
relish that.”
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Why most people over fifty should consider taking Vitamin K2
Vitamin K2, particularly the
menaquinone-7 (MK-7) form, is
recognised for its role in regulating
calcium and promoting cardiovascular
health.
Atherosclerosis is a chronic
inflammatory disease characterised
by the buildup of plaque in the
arteries. This process causes the
arteries to narrow and stiffen, which
restricts blood flow, causing blood
pressure to rise, increasing the risk
of serious cardiovascular events like
heart attack and stroke, as well as
organ failure.
The benefits of vitamin K2,
specifically the MK-7 variant, are
tied to its role in regulating calcium:
it prevents calcium from depositing
in arteries and directs it to the
bones, where it is required for bone
strength. Clinical studies have
demonstrated that supplementation
with MK-7 can help reduce arterial
stiffness, a marker of atherosclerosis
that is associated with an increased
risk of cardiovascular events. Several
studies have also demonstrated a
link between high vitamin MK-7
intake and a reduced risk of coronary
artery calcification. In the Rotterdam
Study, a higher intake of MK-7 was
associated with a lower risk of death
from coronary heart disease. Another
three-year placebo-controlled trial
involving healthy postmenopausal
women demonstrated that a daily
dose of 180 mcg of MK-7 significantly
improved arterial stiffness and
elasticity. Yet another study has
shown a remarkable reduction in
arterial stiffness in just 24 weeks
using a daily dose of 375 mcg.
The MK-7 form of vitamin K2
is primarily found in fermented
foods, such as natto (a traditional
Japanese dish made from fermented
soybeans), and to a lesser extent, in
certain cheeses. The dietary intake
of MK-7 is often low in Western diets,
which is why supplementation is
typically recommended, especially in
the form of MK-7, as it has superior
bioavailability and remains active in
the bloodstream longer than other
forms.
Anyone on anticoagulant
medication, such as warfarin, should
consult a doctor before taking a
vitamin K2 supplement, as it can
interfere with the medication.
As vitamin K2 is fat-soluble, for
optimal absorption, it should be taken
with a meal rich in healthy fats, such
as avocado or olive oil. Consistency,
however, is the most essential factor
by taking the MK-7 regularly.
Numerous clinical studies have shown vitamin K2 to be one of the most essential supplements to take
if you are over fifty years old. Vitamin K2 is necessary for calcium metabolism, allowing calcium to
be effectively absorbed into bones and transported to where it is needed. As we age, vitamin K2 levels
decline, and calcium remains in the bloodstream, leading to the buildup of plaque in blood vessels and
their hardening (atherosclerosis), which restricts blood flow. This causes blood pressure to rise
and increases the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Research indicates that vitamin K2, specifically
menaquinone-7 (MK-7), has superior bioavailability and remains active in the bloodstream longer
than other forms. Studies show that 180-300 mcg of MK-7 can significantly reduce arterial stiffness and
improve blood vessel elasticity over time, supporting healthy blood pressure.
- Correct calcium metabolism
- Strong bones & teeth
- Reducing plaque buildup in blood vessels,
helping prevent a heart attack, stroke or organ
failure
- Healthy blood circulation & blood pressure
- Improved health & longevity
Chch’s best kept noisy little secret
ALE House Rock No. 9 is
on tomorrow night. Hosted
by David orpe, the event
has been running monthly
throughout the year in
Altiora, the former Arts
Centre gym.
“If you know about the
Aussie ‘Pub choir’
phenomenon, then you’ll
understand the concept, for
those that don’t, simply it a bunch of folks
having a drink and a bloody good singsong
with surprising results,” said Davey.
Led by local music veteran David orpe
AKA, Davey Backyard, e Skeatles, Li’l
Chuck, e Black Velvet Band etc), he says
the sessions are proven to
be fantastic social sonic fun
for all.
A few key points...
everyone is welcome to be
part of this casual
community focused choir.
You do not need to be able
to sing. Davey says that’s all
part of the fun. Pop
material.
“We choose popular songs with lots of
nice bits you can hum, holler, sing or
Clear the Area: Remove dead grass, moss, and
weeds using a rake. For heavy weed growth, apply
weed killer.
Wait for Weeds to Die: Allow 7–14 days after
spraying for the weeds to fully die before planting
grass seed.
Prepare the Soil: Spread lawn preparation mix over
bare patches. Pack it down with a lawn roller and
level it with a straightedge.
Sow the Seeds: Dampen the area, evenly spread
grass seed, and lightly rake over it.
Water Regularly: Water daily while seeds germinate.
On hot days, water in the morning and evening.
