and support to community partners to offer a variety

of services to individuals throughout Nevada, including

Nutrition Services to older adults, transportation, and

caregiver support.

APS (Adult Protective Services) Serve vulnerable

adults (age 18 to 59) & older adults (60+) who

are: Abused, Neglected, Exploited, Isolated, and

Abandoned; Assistance is provided by investigating,

providing, or arranging for services to alleviate and

prevent further maltreatment while safeguarding civil

liberties.

ATAP (Autism Treatment Assistance Program) Assists

parents and caregivers with the expensive cost of

providing Autism-specific treatment to their child with

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

NEIS (Nevada Early Intervention Services) Provides

early intervention services to families with eligible

children ages 0-3 years old with a diagnosed disability

or developmental delay; Support includes service

coordination, special instruction, occupational therapy,

physical therapy, speech therapy, nutrition services,

nutrition services, hearing services, vision services

family training, and counseling.

LTCOP (Long Term Care Ombudsman Program)

Advocates for residents in long term care facilities;

Services provided include assistance to residents of

communities in regards to long term care, education of

beneficiaries in paying for their monthly prescription

drug costs.

From Despair to Hope:

One Patient’s Journey through Specialty and Rehabilitation Care

In 2023, Fritz Fontenot came

to PAM Health Specialty

Hospital of Las Vegas for

continuation of care following

abdominal surgery, orthopedic

surgery, and cardiac

monitoring. Mr. Fontenot’s

story began when he fell from

a second-story roof while at

work and suffered a traumatic

orthopedic injury requiring an

open patellar repair. Soon after,

When Mr. Fontenot first came to PAM

Health Specialty Hospital of Las Vegas,

he was very weak and experiencing

tremendous amounts of pain.

he suffered a cardiac arrest caused by a massive bilateral pulmonary embolism.

As he was recovering, he had one setback after another, including recurring

deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), coagulopathy (impairment in the blood’s

ability to clot) from the tPA (medication to break up blood clots in the brain

and restore blood flow after a stroke) requiring an abdominal surgery for a liver

lobe repair, and ventilator support due to respiratory failure.

Miraculously, Mr. Fontenot pulled through it all, and after weeks at the

acute care hospital, came to PAM Health Specialty Hospital of Las Vegas

for extensive therapy, pain management, and aggressive wound care.

When he first came to PAM Health Specialty Hospital of Las Vegas, he was

very weak and experiencing tremendous amounts of pain. One of his biggest

challenges was orthostatic hypotension, which is when blood pressure drops

when upright. This condition made it difficult for him to simply sit up in bed,

much less get out of it. Staff needed to reposition him and sit him up whenever

he wanted to move. After a few weeks of making minimal progress, he pushed

through those barriers in therapy and was finally able to sit up, stand, and even

walk. In addition to advancing his mobility, Mr. Fontenot’s multiple surgical

wounds healed significantly. He received aggressive wound care, dressing

changes, and education on the importance of repositioning. As his surgical

wounds healed, his pain also decreased.

Throughout his recovery, his greatest support was his wife Tammy,

who was by his side every day. Together, Tammy and the clinical team pushed

Mr. Fontenot to participate in therapy and give his all. He went from tolerating

20 minutes sitting at the edge of the bed

to sitting himself up, standing, and walking

with a walker.

“I can’t express what a joyous thing it was

to see and how grateful I am for everything

they’ve done for him here,” Tammy said.

After about two months at PAM Health

Specialty Hospital of Las Vegas,

Mr. Fontenot transferred to PAM Health

Rehabilitation Hospital of Centennial Hills

to continue his journey toward recovery.

The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations

in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several

visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.

Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence:

As you arrive at the residence, do you like

its location and outward apppearance?

Did you receive a warm greeting from

staff welcoming you to the residence?

Does the administrator/staff call residents

by name and interact warmly with them as

you tour the residence?
