4 St Cross College, University of Oxford

It is astonishing how quickly my

second year is coming to a close.

After a first year experiencing the

life cycle of a graduate college, I am

now clear what we need to do to

bring about the changes requested

in a comprehensive survey of our

students, Fellows and the wider St

Cross community. There is much to

be done to deliver our vision for the

College, which is now captured in a

new College Plan for 2025-2028.

Principal improvements will include

better facilities, reduced impact on the

environment, a more flexible catering

offer, more college accommodation,

a more active year-round events

programme, a stronger identity and

higher profile for St Cross and more

active alumni networks.

“Let’s call it a College refresh -

watch this space!”

Supporting me over this period will be

our new Vice-Master, Professor Matt

Jarvis, who took on the role in April.

Matt is a distinguished astrophysicist

who has been a Fellow at St Cross

since 2012. We are indebted to

Professor Kevin Marsh for his

dedicated service as Vice-Master over

the past four years.

This year we celebrated the

achievements of our current

Fellowship with Professor Sibel

Erduran and Professor Steve Strand

being appointed Fellows of the

Academy of Social Sciences and

Professor Paul Shearing a Fellow of

the Royal Academy of Engineering.


Our distinguished Emeritus Fellow,

Rev. Prof. Diarmaid MacCulloch, was

named an Honorary Fellow of the

Royal Society of Literature. We also

gained four new full Professors in

Robert Carlisle, Michael Biggs, Tom

Scott-Smith and Corneliu Bjola as

their new titles were conferred under

the Record of Distinction scheme.

We were delighted to welcome six

new Fellows and four new Research

Fellows (having dropped the “Junior”

label) in the year: Dr Rebecca Brown,

Prof Nandini Chatterjee, Dr Chloe

Chessell, Prof Manuel Fernández-

Götz, Dr Tracey Gale, Dr Giovanni

Italiano, Dr Sara Maleubre Molinero,

Dr Mehrunisha Suleman, Prof

I should particularly like to thank those

Fellows who have given service to the

College by serving on its Committees

and, in particular, to the Dean, Prof

Heather Hamill, the President of the

Common Room, Fr Mark Stafford, the

Garden Master, Prof Mark Robinson,

and the Sports Fellow, Prof James

Taylor, who underpin our operations

with their wisdom and expertise.

Our newly appointed volunteer Art

Registrar, Dr Rodney Mearns, is

providing invaluable support and we

were very grateful to Ally Trowell,

from Pusey House, who took the

role of Carol Service choir-master

and Sasha Travers who handled the

administration. We appreciated

as ever the expert nose of Graham

Harding, our Wine Steward, who

ensures every special dinner dish is

complemented with its perfect pair.

Michaelmas Term saw the

appointment of our new Director of

Development, Milos Martinov, who

joined us from Merton College. Milos

has reignited fundraising at St Cross

with great vigour and the two of us

have already hosted alumni events in

New York, Edinburgh and Tokyo! Milos

masterminded the first fundraising

appeal for 5 years and secured full

match funding for a generous pledge

of £125,000 from longstanding friend

of St Cross, David Scrymgeour.

“Thank you to all who

donated this year, many for

the first time. We are hugely

appreciative and will invest

carefully in improving the

student experience at the

College. “

We were sad to say goodbye to Sharon

Durno, Academic Registrar for 8

years. Sharon’s retirement legacy to

the College was an in-depth student

survey, which we will run each year

from now on to make sure we are

doing all we can to meet the changing

needs of our student community – our

top priority!

And finally, I should like to pay tribute

to the staff of the College, and our

catering colleagues, all of whom are

being asked to adapt to the changes

we are bringing in. Their contribution

in terms of new ideas, their energy,

flexibility and willingness to embrace

the new are what will fuel the exciting

transformation to come in the years

ahead. We could not do it without

them!

2024-25


The past academic year brought an

extraordinary run of achievement

across the St Cross community - from

major academic distinctions and

national honours to sporting triumphs,

creative success and community

awards. The following is a snapshot of

some of the year’s highlights.

“St Cross Fellows

won wide recognition

for scholarship and

leadership.”

Professor Sibel Erduran was elected to

the Academy of Social Sciences for her

influential work in science education.

Rev. Prof. Sir Diarmaid MacCulloch

was elected an Honorary Fellow of

the Royal Society of Literature and

Professor Paul Shearing was elected to

the Royal Academy of Engineering for

his contributions to electrochemical

engineering. In addition, Professor

Steve Strand was awarded an OBE in

the New Year Honours and in early

September was elected a Fellow of

the Academy of Social Sciences in

recognition of his work as Professor of

Education. Several Fellows were also

awarded professorships through the

University’s Recognition of Distinction:

Michael Biggs (Sociology), Tom

Scott-Smith (Political Anthropology),

Robert Carlisle (Biomedical Sciences)

and Corneliu Bjola, who becomes

the world’s first Professor of Digital

Diplomacy and now leads the Oxford

Digital Diplomacy Research Group.

Together, these honours underline

the remarkable breadth of expertise

represented within the College.

The College’s contribution to public

engagement and research culture

was also celebrated. The TORCH

Medical Humanities Research Hub -

to which St Cross Fellow Dr Alberto

Giubilini contributed - won the Vice-

Chancellor’s Research Culture Award

for its interdisciplinary, inclusive

approach. Vice-Master Professor Matt

Jarvis was also shortlisted as a finalist

for the Commitment to Equality,

Diversity and Inclusion Award and

spoke at the awards showcase.

The Wolfson/St Cross Boat Club

achieved a historic Summer Eights

headship, a campaign celebrated with

the club’s traditional boat-burning

ceremony. These shared celebrations

- academic, cultural and sporting -

reflect a college that prizes excellence,

community and curiosity in equal

measure.

St Cross warmly congratulates

everyone mentioned here and thanks

all members of the College for making

2024–25 such a vivid and rewarding

My first full academic year at St

Cross – and what a year it has

been! We’ve said some fond farewells,

put the College Strategic Plan in

place and already made a start on the

underpinning projects.

This year we’ve welcomed Jenny

Davies as our Conference & Events

Manager. The team have worked

closely with a number of University

departmental teams this year

including AfOx, the Paediatric

Infectious Diseases (PID) programme,

and Continuing Education. As always

they have supported events for

both Fellows, students and College

departments, and helped Pusey

House to deliver their largest ever

conference in July, with over 300

onsite daily for 3 days of talks, dinners

and networking. The year has been

rounded out by the summer Soiree

– a huge success with 250 students

and their guests enjoying a range of

entertainment – even a silent disco

in Pusey Chapel! The chapel has also

been used for a number of weddings

co-hosted with Pusey – we’re always

delighted to welcome alumni back for

such special occasions.

the Lodge as Paul’s successor who is

making a fantastic start at St Cross.

We also extended our warmest wishes

to Judith Ledger on her retirement

after an incredible 39 years of service.

Stepping into Judith’s shoes was never

going to be easy, but we’re thrilled that

our very own Tim Doran has embraced

the challenge and taken on the role of

Accounts Officer.

In a year marked by significant staffing

transitions, we also celebrated

the contributions of Suzy Hodge,

Domestic Bursar, and Kenny Cox,

Estates Manager, as they moved on

to new chapters. Both were valued

members of the College community,

and their dedication and contribution

to St Cross will be greatly missed.

Our new Domestic Bursar, Harriet

Quint, joins us from Green Templeton

College in September, just in time for

Michaelmas Term!

We have made a positive start on plans

to deliver the new College Strategy.

We’ve started on governance reviews;

begun a review of our catering

provision; and started to reviewing our

internal space allocations to make best

use of our limited footprint to offer

an environment in which our students

and Fellows can thrive. We’ve

increased our room stock by 17% by

taking on more nominations from

the University to offer opportunity

for more St Crossers to live together,

including new family accommodation.

The College has made successful

applications for College Contribution

Scheme funding, and has received

support to enhance our Development

teams, our marketing strategy and

rebrand, upgrades to the Lecture

Theatre, and developing a proposal

to potentially take on significant

additional accommodation – hopefully

more to report on that soon!

As always, none of this could

have been delivered without the

unfailing enthusiasm, support and

conscientiousness of the team, all of

whom are so very proud of St Cross

and all our Fellows and students – so

a huge thank you to all of them for

everything they make possible.

was delighted to join St Cross

in September 2024, just before

the start of Michaelmas term. Over

the past year, I have enjoyed getting

to know the College and meeting

alumni and friends from all corners

of the world. Thank you to everyone

for the universally warm welcome.

The Development team and I feel

energised about the future of St Cross,

particularly with the College’s 60th

anniversary coming up in the next

academic year.

The Development Office has a two-fold

mission:

• Raising funds to support current

and future generations of St

Crossers.

• Helping alumni and friends realise

their lifelong membership of the

College.

On the fundraising front, I am pleased

to report that St Crossers have

collectively raised £475,359 in gifts and

pledges in the 2024-25 financial year.

A huge thank you to all our donors,

whose support makes a wonderful

difference. We would like to extend

particular thanks to Career Essentials

Inc (2005) and our great friend David

Scrymgeour, whose generous matching

gift campaign inspired many to donate.

We are thrilled to have completed

this campaign in July, ahead of the


December 2025 deadline. Causes

supported by donors include our

general fund (for areas of greatest

need), buildings, bursaries for students

in hardship, the History and Philosophy

of Physics (HAPP) centre, and of

course, scholarships.

On that note, the College remains

enormously grateful to the Uehiro

Foundation for their generosity.

We were delighted to welcome the

first cohort of eight Uehiro Future

Generations Scholars in Practical

Ethics this year, alongside two Visiting

Scholars from Japan. Special thanks

We had a busy schedule of 18 events,

hosting hundreds of St Crossers.

Annual gatherings in College, such

as Fred’s Lunch and Encaenia, were

complemented by vibrant events

further afield in London, New York,

Edinburgh and Tokyo. We were

honoured to host Lord Bilimoria and

Debbie Wosskow as speakers for

Professionals in Residence, a wonderful

programme established by Doug

Wigdor. Our schedule also included

an exciting Uehiro Lecture Series in

Practical Ethics, featuring Walter

Sinnott-Armstrong, Helen Frowe

and Michael Sandel. We extend our

thanks to the Uehiro Foundation for

supporting this series and to our Fellow

Alberto Giubilini for his expert curation

We kept our community up-to-date

with a termly e-newsletter and the

annual College magazines (Crossword

& Record). It has been a real joy to learn

about, and report, all the exciting things

St Crossers are getting up to – our

community never ceases to amaze! The

membership of our alumni LinkedIn

Group (St Cross College, Oxford) has

also grown. With more than 1,000

members, it serves as an alumni

directory, helping St Crossers maintain

old connections and make new ones.

I would like to close by paying tribute

to the Development team – James,

Savi, Julia and Ben – for their stellar

support throughout the year. Thank

Report

ollowing a very busy admissions

F round, we welcomed a record

number of Freshers to St Cross in

2024-25, with over 290 students

joining College for the academic year.

Our matriculation ceremony will be

remembered for the 282 students

in attendance. We continued with

the traditional St Cross Freshers’

Fortnight which provides an excellent

opportunity over an extended

period for our new students to get

to know each other. Many thanks

to the members of the Student

Representative Committee from

2023-24 who organised an excellent,

varied programme of events and

activities, to ensure the new students

had a positive experience on arrival.

The introductory talks led by the

Master ensured the students were

welcomed into the College community

and provided with the key information

on college life, and briefly introduced

to staff teams, the Junior Deans,

College Counsellor and College GP

Dr Laurence Leaver. The College

GP practice continue to provide an

excellent, easily accessible service to

our students supporting their physical

and mental wellbeing.

Our Communications team provided

timely targeted bulletins to our

Freshers and returning students, and

mechanisms for students to link up

with other St Crossers before arrival

and during the Freshers’ fortnight.

We are very grateful to Judith Palmer,

our Communications Officer for

her creative use of social media,

and development of informative

newsletters to ensure students


receive key messages relating to both

their academic life and social activities

in the wider university and College.

Our Admissions Administrator

Eamonn Deeley undertook the

challenging task of processing 626

offers to applicants, and offers were

converted to unconditional at the

earliest opportunity for students.

With our students navigating the

University offer process, and in

many cases also applying for visas

and undertaking all the logistical

challenges of moving from overseas,

we continue to seek to refine the

process within our scope.

In 2024-25 our new students came

to us from 63 different countries.

Registration is encouraged in person

in College where programme start

dates and travel logistics make

this possible, and this continues

to facilitate the opportunity for

connections with other St Crossers to

be developed before the start of term.

New arrivals had the opportunity

to ask any immediate questions of

the academic office team, our IT

support team Leslie Isaac and Dominic

Rudman. On behalf of the College I

would like to express our thanks to the

Welcome Team for 2024-25 for their

vital contribution to making those first

days and weeks at St Cross easier for

our new intake. Tours of College were

offered to students and our Librarian,

Philippa Taney once again provided

advice and guidance, on the library,

study space facilities in College and

an introduction to the library system

in Oxford, and we are grateful to

Philippa and Serafijn Gentils the Library

Assistant.

The Student Representative

Committee for 2024-25, led by

President Jamie McIntosh and

Vice President Maxime Bourdier,

worked very hard to ensure a diverse

programme of activities and events

for Freshers with something for

everyone. From visits to museums,

picnics in the park, evening socials. We

are extremely grateful for their input.

The organisation of Freshers’ fortnight

was again a success due to the efforts

of the Events Manager, Justine

Shepperson and Events Assistant,

Justyna Skalska. The Events and

Catering team Baxter Storey again

provided excellent catering offerings

across a wide range of events.

As Head of Welfare at St Cross,

I work closely with the staff and

student welfare team in College,

and University wellbeing services to

support students and signpost them

to the most appropriate source of

support. We thank Student Disability

Rep, Marsha Shaily for her work in

supporting students with disabilities in

College. College Counsellor Kai Yang

continued to support our students in

College, offering in-person and online

appointments, and further supported

students in her Counselling role with

University Counselling Service. Kai

has been a key member of the Welfare

team at St Cross during 2024-25, and

we are extremely grateful for her work

in College.

Academically 2024-25 was again a

successful year. At the time of writing

the results of 139 Masters and BPhil/

MPhil students are published. Of our

DPhil students 62 received Leave to

Supplicate during 2024-25 and we

congratulate all on their exceptional

achievement.

Degree Day ceremonies were held

throughout the year. Academic Office

Secretary Sasha Travers again used

her detailed knowledge to support

the 306 graduands through the formal

processes of attending a ceremony

and oversaw the day itself ensuring

a memorable day for graduands and

their families and friends.

We thank our Deans of Degrees;

Francis Leneghan, Joerg Friedrichs,

Stanley Ulijaszek and An Van Camp,

for presiding over the Degree

Days in 2024-25, and the smaller

matriculation ceremonies held

throughout the academic year. Finally,

we must thank our team of Student

Ambassadors who helped out at all

of our events: Saba Ishrat (Junior

Dean), Vrinda Jariwala, Vidushi

Chugh, Alberto Olliaro, and Tharreq

Barasbha.

We look forward to working with staff,

Senior Tutor (Academic Affairs

The past year has seen the College’s

intellectual life flourish through

academic events, study skills sessions

and subject lunches building links

between students and Fellows.

Bursaries”

The College’s study skills programme

to support students in their studies

has been developed further to

optimise academic progress

with student input on areas of

interest. Many of these skills were

demonstrated at the annual Research

Presentation Prize Competition for

students in Hilary Term with talks

in five minutes using only three

PowerPoint slides.

The 11th Lorna Casselton Memorial

Lecture was held on the 15th of May

and given by Dr Andrea Hinwood

(Chief Scientist, United Nations

Environment Programme) on “The

Role of Fungi in Solving Planetary

Crises”.

The St Cross Centre for the History

& Philosophy of Physics (HAPP) has

continued to thrive especially with

livestreaming of in-person events


enabling the participation of several

hundred attendees worldwide. The

termly one-day conferences were

“Paradoxes in Physics” (Michaelmas

2024), “Physical Origins from the Big

Bang to Earth” (Hilary 2025) with a

follow-on online lecture on “Origin

of Life on Earth” and “Measure for

Measure: A History of Measurement”

(Trinity 2025). HAPP celebrated its

tenth anniversary in 2024-2025

with the HAPP 10th Anniversary

Commemorative Volume, edited by

Dr Jo Ashbourn, published by the

Institute of Physics Publishing.

Amongst a number of academic

lectures and talks throughout

the academic year, some popular

highlights were the Discussion

Panels on “Sustainability and Oxford

Heritage” chaired by Governing Body

Fellow Professor Paul Shearing and

on “AI and Peacemaking: Rethinking

Conflict Resolution in the Digital Age”

chaired by Governing Body Fellow

Professor Corneliu Bjola as well as

the lecture by His Excellency the

Ambassador of the Republic of Austria

to the United Kingdom, Bernhard

Wrabetz on “Austrian Neutrality in a

Changing Geopolitical Environment”.

It also was the turn of the College to

host the annual St Cross-Clare Hall

Fellows’ Exchange Dinner with guests

from our Cambridge sister college at

a very convivial event on the 16th of

June to round off the academic year.

Cultural Activities

Report

he College has continued to

T develop its cultural life which

comprises both musical and artistic

activities. In Michaelmas Term 2024

Governing Body Fellow, Dr Shailendra

Bhandare gave a talk entitled “How

Money Talks: Power, Culture and

Politics” on the 29th of November

about the exhibition he curated

at the Ashmolean Museum, which

showcased more than a hundred

objects from around the world,

including renowned artworks and the

new phenomena of cryptocurrency

and NFTs. The talk outlined the

tensions between the playfulness of

Art and the power of money to bring

out the tensions and juxtapositions

the two share, and provided unique

insights into how Art can be used as

a lens to appreciate and analyse the

position Money occupies in our social

history.

The end of Michaelmas Term saw

the annual St Cross Carol Service

in the Pusey House Chapel on the

10th of December 2024 to welcome

the festive season with the St Cross

Choir in hearty voice. The following

term had a fascinating talk by Ben

Hebbert entitled “Connoisseurship:

A Violin Expert’s Show and Tell” on

the 30th of January 2025 on the

knowledge used to judge a range of

elements from quality to authenticity

including a show and tell with a variety

of instruments and tools on hand for

comparison, in particular a violin made

for Catherine de Medici’s musicians

at the French court of Charles IX in

1572 and two instruments ostensibly

from the English court of Charles I for

discussion.

The Students’ Musical Evening was

held on the 12th of March 2025,

organised by the current Helene La

Rue Scholars, Christos Yiallouros and

Eliana Dunford, which had a medley of

accomplished vocal and instrumental

musical performances by St Cross

students with the programme below:

The College’s annual Photography

Competition was held in 2025 with a

theme of ‘Four Corners of the World’

which was interpreted broadly.

Forty eight entries were received,

which were judged by the College’s

Art Committee with a prize of £150

being awarded to the winning entry

by Daniel Herszberg, entitled ‘In

Search of a Better World’ and taken in

Merzouga, Morocco on the edge of the

Sahara Desert (shown below).

At the end of Trinity Term 2025

Governing Body Fellow, Professor

Eben Kirksey held a poetry reading

by Christina Thatcher on her book

“Breaking a Mare” on the 18th of June,

which was an investigation of silence,

goodness and girlhood, inviting

readers into the barn, the sawdust

mill and the rodeo arena. The poems

exposed the hard work women do on

farms, the loss of rural landscapes and

the role death can play in these spaces.

SRC Report

Community was a key focus for

this year’s student representative

committee to ensure that students

at St Cross had a memorable and fun

experience. The academic year kicked

off with a very busy Freshers’ week

featuring popular social events such as

an inter-college bar crawl, a pub quiz

and ballroom dancing.

At the end of the brilliant two weeks

the SRC bop themed ‘Saltburn’ was

a sell out with fun themed cocktails

and a brilliantly decorated dining

hall. Throughout the rest of the

year the SRC worked tirelessly to

produce weekly social events such as

Welfare Tea and Cake, fortnightly Pub

Quizzes, formal exchanges and family

orientated events.

The Social Secretaries introduced

and ran a St. Brigid’s day céilí dance in

February, celebrating Irish culture in

college. We had live musicians playing

and calling for us on the night, and the

sold-out event was attended by 75

people. The LGTBQ+ representatives

also hosted their annual formal dinner

which fell on Valentine’s Day which

was sold out with attendance from the

As always, sports remained a key

aspect for this year’s St Cross

members. The St Cross & Wolfson

boat club impressive results

throughout the year with a main

highlight being that the men achieved

headship at the Summer Eights.

Our cuppers teams were impressive

with teams formed for basketball,

cricket, volleyball, and touch rugby

allowing those who had never

played the sport to play in a fun and

competitive way.

The annual Sports Dinner organised

by Sienna Tounger, the Sports and

Society Representative was a huge

success with an attendance of 100

people with by speeches Holly Bihun

Soirée

This year, I also had the privilege of

running the annual St Cross Soirée

with the help of the rest of the committee.

“With help from

college we quickly sold

250 tickets - selling out

in under a minute.”

Following the theme of ‘Star Crossed

Lovers’ the SRC turned the college

into a beautifully decorated and

magical place. The evening began

with canapes and drinks with a string

quartet playing classical music in the

West Wing Quad. The magician and

the tarot card reader were two of the

more popular forms of entertainment

(ice hockey captain), Jack Johnson and

Jared Martin (blues runners), James

(blues ballroom) and Sienna (blues

basketball) herself.

and provided guests with mind tricks

and fortune telling.

As the evening progressed, catering

provided a delicious array of bowl food

with pizza, ravioli and arancini being

served at various stands around college.

After that, the dancing started!

The hall - which had been gorgeously

draped by the estates team - turned

into a BOP whilst Pusey Chapel hosted

the Silent Disco. Overall, the event

was a massive success and I am very

grateful to the SRC and the college

for all their help witj putting together

such an amazing event to celebrate

the end of the academic year.

It was a great year for sport at the

college, with participation and

achievements in a wonderfully rich

variety of sports.

Full Blues were awarded by the

University to the following members

of St Cross: Holly Bihun (ice hockey),

Emma Godden (modern pentathlon),

Jack Johnson (athletics 5000m), Jared

Martin (cross-country), and Sienna

Tounger (basketball). Holly, Emma and

Jared must also be congratulated on

representing their countries in their

chosen sports. To be awarded a Half

Blue is also a terrific achievement,

and this level was attained by the

following college members: Johnny

Dewan (lacrosse), Tamsin Greene

Barker (touch rugby), Thomas Joyce

(baseball), Caleb Klein (fencing), James

Moore (dancesport), Nicole Schafer

(mountain biking), Marcel Schliebs

(triathlon), and Jianming Wang (clay

pigeon shooting).

However, perhaps the most impressive

aspect of the rowing club is the

high numbers of college members

participating in this sport. Indeed,

one has to wonder how many other

colleges can boast that their bursar

rows for them.

won Head of the River

in both Torpids and

Summer Eights”

Huge thanks must go to Sienna

Tounger, who did a fantastic job as

Sports and Societies Rep, overseeing

and promoting sport at the college,

managing the sports budget, and

organising a thoroughly enjoyable

sports dinner.

A big thank you must also go to Rachel

Walker, who, as College Accountant,

provided invaluable help with the

financial side of sport at the college.

Obituaries

Dr Michael

(Mick) Blowfield

(1957 – 2025)

St Cross Fellow Dr Michael (Mick)

Blowfield died on 30th August

2024. Mick was a Fellow by Special

Election between January 2009 and

September 2013 and an Emeritus

Professor at Wolverhampton

University. He was also Director

of the International Institute for

Environment and Development

(IIED)’s Shaping Sustainable Markets

group until December 2017.

He lived and worked in more than 20

countries worldwide over his lifetime

and brought an anthropological

perspective to understanding business

in society, and to helping companies

manage that relationship.

His work is widely published, and he

worked for many years convening

dialogues with the private sector

about sustainable development,

climate change, and other major

challenges.

Charles Mould

(1928 – 2025)

St Cross Emeritus Fellow Dr Charles

Mould died on 25th May 2025.

Charles had a long and distinguished

association with St Cross, having

served as a Professional Fellow from

1981 to 1995, during his tenure as

Secretary of the Bodleian Library. He

brought with him an extraordinary

breadth of experience. Before coming

to Oxford, he had a 20-year career

in the British Army, retiring as a

Lieutenant Colonel and expert in

guided weaponry and electronics,

serving on the staff of the Royal

Military College of Science.

In 1966, he moved to Oxford to take

up a role at what was then Oxford

Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes),

where he later became Registrar. He

joined the Bodleian in 1980, where

he served as Secretary with great

distinction for fifteen years. Charles

played a pivotal role in modernising

Library administration during a period

of considerable change, overseeing

finance, building works, and the


introduction of new technologies. His

energy, intellect and administrative

skill left a lasting impact on one of

the University’s most treasured

institutions.

Alongside this formidable professional

life, Charles was a gifted and

passionate musician. An authority on

English harpsichords and organs, he

earned a doctorate in the field and

was the editor of the revised edition

of Makers of the Harpsichord and

Clavichord 1440–1840. He was also

a skilled organist and conductor,

regularly playing at Blenheim Palace

and taking an active role in the life

of the St Cross Choir, which he

conducted for several years and

continued to sing with well into

retirement.

Charles remained a familiar and

generous presence at College after his

retirement, and many will remember

his warm and thoughtful conversation,

his wit, and his dedication to

the College community. He also

contributed to wider Oxford life as a

town guide and enthusiastic speaker

on the library’s history.

Brian

Woolnough

(1937 – 2025)

St Cross Emeritus Fellow Brian

Woolnough died on 1st July 2025.

Brian was elected to a Fellowship

at St Cross in 1984 and remained a

respected and active member of our

community for over four decades. A

physicist by training, he spent much of

his academic career working in science

education, with a particular focus on

the teaching and learning of science in

schools and universities.

After early research in solid-state

physics and extensive involvement

with computing in the physical

sciences, Brian turned his attention

to how science is best taught and

learned. He was known for advocating

for more holistic, student-focused

approaches to science education, and

his work was both practical and deeply

thoughtful. He supervised numerous

postgraduate students and published

widely on curriculum development,

educational philosophy, and the role of

science in society.

His many publications reflect a career

dedicated to improving understanding

of how students engage with science,

and how education systems can better

support curiosity and critical thinking.

His contributions have left a lasting

legacy in the field.
