obby S. Phillips Sr., the youngest child of Chester Arthur and
Willie Mae Wilkes Phillips, was born on March 1, 1939. He
was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings:
Willie, Inez, Mattie, Rose, Addie Mae, Ada Lee, George, and
Harold. He was also predeceased by two sons, Bobby Samuel Jr. and
Tommy Lee, as well as three grandchildren: Jarvis, Toki, and Antonio.
Bobby accepted Christ at an early age and joined his family church,
where he sang with the family group, The Phillips. His love for music
remained throughout his life as he continued to share gospel songs, the
blues, and heartfelt hymns. He blessed many through his singing on the
family prayer line with songs such as Thank You, Lord, Let It Be Real,
Jesus Build a Fence Around Us, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and I Am
Going to Leave You in the Hands of the Lord.
Bobby also leaves behind treasured memories through the sayings he
was known for, including:
“You need to take six months to mind your own business and six
months to leave mine alone.”
“If I tell you the huckleberry is ripe, get your bucket.”
“Mind how you treat me—you might need me sometime.”
Bobby moved to Florida around 1967, where he became employed with
the Palm Beach County School Board. He dedicated 33½ years of service
before retiring in 2001. He was well known by many as “The Pony
Man”. He also served and assisted employees through his work with the
Firemen and Oilers Union, where he held the position of Executive Vice
President of the Firemen and Oilers Union.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Dulce
Harding Lunsford Phillips, and his children:
Sons: Bruce (Zena), Anthony (Atlanta, Georgia)
Daughters: Sandra Lynn, Susan (Atlanta,
Georgia); Bonus Sons: Patrick Lunsford Sr.
(Lar Nique) of Huntsville, Alabama; Marcus
Lunsford (Jennifer) of Sanford, Florida
He is also survived by his favorite niece,
Darlene Smith, and his son-phew, Rocky
Smith, both of Mableton, Georgia; as well
as a host of nieces, nephews, grands,
great-grands, great-great-grandchildren,
relatives, and friends.
Bobby’s life was one of music, laughter,
wisdom, and service. His presence touched
many, and his memory will forever remain
in the hearts of those who loved him.
