UNDERSTANDING
STRESS:
How to manage it —
and when to seek help
Stress is something we all experience, but when life becomes
overwhelming, its effects can be felt in every corner of our wellbeing -
from our mood and sleep to our relationships and physical health.
While a small amount of stress can
sharpen focus and motivate us, long-term
or intense stress can take a toll. Learning
how to manage it effectively is crucial,
especially during busy or emotionally
demanding times.
RECOGNISING THE SIGNS
Stress looks different for everyone, but
there are common signs to watch out for.
You may feel irritable, anxious, or unable
to concentrate. Physically, stress can
show up as headaches, muscle tension,
sleep disturbances, stomach issues, or
a constant sense of fatigue. Emotionally,
it can leave you feeling overwhelmed or
detached from things you usually enjoy.
Being aware of these symptoms is the first
step in taking control.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO MANAGE
STRESS
One of the most effective ways to manage
stress is to take small, consistent steps
that support everyday wellbeing:
1. Prioritise rest. Sleep is vital for
emotional resilience. Create a
calming bedtime routine, avoid
screens late in the evening and aim
for a consistent sleep schedule.
2. Move your body. Exercise releases
endorphins — natural mood
boosters — and helps clear the
mind. You don’t need a gym
membership; even a brisk walk,
cycling, yoga or gardening can make
a big difference.
3. Create boundaries. Stress often
builds when we take on too much.
Learning to say no, limiting screen
time, and setting small, achievable
goals can help you maintain a
healthier balance.
4. Stay connected. Talking to friends,
family or colleagues can provide
perspective and support. Sharing
how you feel is not a sign of
weakness — it’s a coping strategy.
5. Practice mindfulness or relaxation.
Simple breathing techniques,
meditation, journalling or even a few
quiet minutes with a cup of tea can
help calm the nervous system.
6. Take breaks. Whether it’s
stepping outside for fresh air,
taking a weekend off or simply
pausing between tasks, breaks
prevent stress from building to
unmanageable levels.
Lifestyle choices also play a role.
Reducing caffeine and alcohol, staying
hydrated, and fuelling your body with
nourishing food can stabilise energy levels
and mood.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP
While everyday stress can often be
managed with self-care strategies, there
are times when professional support is
important. Consider seeking help if:
• Stress is affecting your work,
relationships or daily functioning
• You feel persistently anxious, low, or
unable to cope
• You’re experiencing panic attacks or
overwhelming physical symptoms
• You’re relying heavily on alcohol,
food, or substances to cope
• Sleep is consistently disrupted
• You feel hopeless or lose interest in
things you normally enjoy
Speaking to your GP is a good first step.
They can offer support, recommend
talking therapies, or signpost local
services. Counsellors, therapists and
wellbeing practitioners can help you
understand your stress triggers and
develop tools to manage them more
effectively.
Stress is a natural part of life, but you
don’t have to face it alone. By recognising
the signs early, prioritising self-care and
reaching out for support when needed,
you can build resilience, protect your
wellbeing and regain a sense of balance.

What is occupational
therapy - and how
can it help me?
Gemma Kenney and Kaylee Mowatt from
Ocupa explain occupational therapy and how
it can help people live more independently,
whatever challenges and goals they have.
What exactly is occupational therapy?
GEMMA: People have often heard of occupational therapy, but
most don’t know what it is! Occupational therapy helps anyone
facing physical or cognitive difficulties do the things that matter
most in their daily lives. It’s about finding practical ways to make
life easier when age, illness, or injury make tasks harder. That
could mean introducing aids and equipment, adapting a home,
or rebuilding strength and confidence after a hospital stay. It is
a broad type of professional therapy tailored around individual
circumstances and goals.
Do I need to go through my GP or the NHS?
KAYLEE: Not at all. A lot of people don’t realise that you can
access private occupational therapy directly, with no waiting list
or referral needed. It means we can see people quickly, often in
their own homes, and focus on what they really want to achieve.
What kinds of things can you help with?
GEMMA: We support people to stay in their homes safely
and comfortably for as long as possible. That might involve
designing adaptations with trusted local tradespeople, giving
moving and handling guidance, or helping someone regain
confidence in accessing their local community. We also review
care arrangements to make sure the right level of support is in
place - we call that “right-sizing” care. If there is something you
are struggling with in daily life, chances are we can help adapt to,
or overcome it.
What makes Ocupa different?
KAYLEE: Combined, we’ve worked in occupational therapy
for more than 35 years in the NHS and local authorities. We’re
independent, experienced, and genuinely care about helping
people stay in control of their lives. Every plan we make
embodies clinical excellence and reflects the highest standard
of therapeutic care, but it’s also personal - and that combination
makes a real difference.

Is your business ready for the new era of payment reporting?
Transparency in payment practices is no longer optional - it’s
the law. New reporting requirements have come into force
this year to help promote greater fairness and speed in how
larger companies pay smaller contractors and suppliers. The
rules are there to address the potentially huge impact on
small firms and the self-employed of late payments from their
bigger business customers.
Your company will have to comply with the new rules if it has
turnover over £54 million, more than £27 million in total
assets or more than 250 employees. The duty to report
extends to charitable companies limited by guarantee.
You will also need to make declarations on e-invoicing
availability, supply chain finance, deduction practices and
whether or not the business is a member of a payment code,
giving the name of the code if so.
All reports must be submitted via the government’s online
portal within 30 days of each reporting period’s end and
approved by a named director.
This isn’t just about ticking boxes, it’s about building trust
throughout supply chains. Transparent payment practices
can strengthen supplier relationships, enhance your
reputation and demonstrate your commitment to ethical
business conduct.
Compliance means that from 6 April 2025 you must publish
detailed reports on payment terms and performance every six
months.
Don’t wait until the deadline looms. Start preparing now and
turn compliance on transparency into a competitive
advantage.
What you need to report:
average payment times
percentage and total value of payments made within 30,
31–60 and more than 61 days
payments not made within agreed terms
disputed invoices
standard payment terms and any changes
dispute resolution processes

HONDA CR-V PHEV
The Ultimate Family SUV
Becoming a parent for the first
time has taught me two important
things: one, sleep is now a luxury,
and two, babies come with a lot of
stuff. I used to pack light—purse,
phone, keys—and that was me
sorted. These days, I look like I’m
moving house every time we leave
the driveway. So, when we started
looking for a new family car, space,
practicality and a bit of peace and
quiet were top of the wish list.
Enter the CR-V 2.0 i-MMD HYBRID
PHEV ADVANCE TECH. Bit of a
mouthful, I know, but once you get
past the name, this car is honestly
a dream for new parents. From the
moment we picked it up, it felt like
Honda had been peeking into our
baby-brained lives.
This car delivers in all the areas we
expected, but really goes over and
above in its many thoughtful features.
I knew we’d experience practicality
and comfort, but I wasn’t prepared
for how refined and efficient it would
be, particularly considering I live in a
very hilly part of the country, where
cars usually work overtime just
getting from A to B.
Let’s talk efficiency. I’ve been
getting just over 60 MPG, which
is remarkable for a car this size—
especially when factoring in the
elevation changes around here.
On shorter journeys, it glides along
in full electric mode thanks to the
plug-in hybrid system, meaning
it’s near-silent and emits nothing
at the tailpipe. When the petrol
engine does take over, it does so
without fuss, offering a smooth and
composed drive whether you’re
climbing a hill or cruising on the
dual carriageway.
The i-MMD hybrid powertrain
is genuinely clever. It switches
between electric, hybrid and engine
drive seamlessly, depending on
what you’re doing, and it feels
responsive and effortless behind the
wheel. There’s no drama—just quiet
competence.
The Advance Tech trim brings
plenty of kit to the table. The
12.3” digital driver display is
bright and easy to read, and the
central touchscreen infotainment
system is intuitive, with both Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto available
wirelessly. You also get a wireless
charging pad, a premium audio
system, and plenty of USB-C ports
for both front and rear passengers.
One feature I didn’t know I needed
until I had it is the My Honda+ App.
It’s brilliant. You can check your fuel
and charge levels, lock or unlock
the doors, and even set the climate
control remotely—ideal on a cold
morning or sweltering afternoon.
It gives you peace of mind, too; if
you’re ever unsure whether you left a
window cracked or forgot to lock up,
a quick check on your phone puts
your mind at ease - how about that
when the baby has nap-trapped you!
In terms of space, the CR-V really
shines. The boot is vast—easily
swallows luggage, shopping, or
in my case, a growing assortment
of baby gear. The rear doors open
a full 90 degrees, which makes
loading car seats or climbing in to
buckle a child a breeze. And the
soft-close doors are a surprisingly
welcome touch—especially when
someone’s napping in the back.
All in all, the CR-V is more than
just a sensible family car—it’s
smart, efficient, and extremely well
equipped. It’s a car that feels like
it was designed by people who
actually use one every day. Whether
you’re tackling hills, the school run,
or just trying to stay one step ahead
of life’s chaos, it’s a very capable
companion.

Road Test Review
2025 FORD EXPLORER EV
Ford’s all-electric Explorer makes
a confident entrance into the
mid-size SUV world — combining
solid family practicality with the
peace of mind offered by Ford’s
Power Promise. Sleek, modern and
unmistakably capable, it feels like
a car designed to take the chaos of
daily life in its stride.
DESIGNED FOR EVERYDAY
ADVENTURES
At first glance, the Explorer looks
every inch the modern family
companion: upright stance, smart
LED lighting and just enough
ruggedness to reassure you it
can handle muddy football fields
or a windswept trip to the coast.
Step inside, and it’s clear Ford has
thought carefully about how families
actually live.
There’s generous space for five,
plus a boot of around 470 litres
— enough for school bags, a
pushchair and the weekly shop.
Fold the rear seats flat and you’ve
got space to slide in bikes, camping
gear or, in our case, an entire
flat-pack wardrobe when your
partner decides to ‘redecorate’. The
materials feel solid, and the highmounted
touchscreen brings a dose
of techy sophistication.
CALM, CAPABLE, CLEVER
On the road, the Explorer is quiet,
confident and surprisingly smooth.
The Extended Range version
offers up to 374 miles on a charge,
making family weekends away a
genuine option without constant
range-worry. It’s swift off the line
too — enough torque to beat the
morning traffic light shuffle, but
without the drama that makes little
passengers queasy.
You really notice the difference
between this and a traditional SUV
the first time you set off. It has the
presence and power you’d expect
from a big family car — plenty of
acceleration for joining a fast-moving
dual carriageway — yet it’s quiet
enough for whisper conversations.
The usual engine growl is replaced
by a smooth hum that makes even
short trips feel calmer.
FORD’S POWER PROMISE
Electric motoring still feels new to
many, but Ford’s Power Promise
aims to remove the anxiety. It
includes home-charger installation
support, access to thousands of
public chargers through one app,
and an eight-year battery warranty
for extra reassurance. There’s also
24-hour helpline support — handy
for those inevitable ‘first charge’
questions. Knowing that help is
on hand makes ownership feel
simpler, especially for those juggling
school runs, after-school clubs and
weekend road trips.
VERDICT
The new Explorer isn’t trying to be
flashy — it’s trying to be useful,
reliable and a pleasure to live with.
And in that, it succeeds brilliantly.
It may not boast seven seats or
luxury-SUV plushness, but it nails
the essentials: comfort, range,
practicality and genuine ease of
use. For busy families looking
to make the leap to electric, the
Explorer feels like a natural next
step — a car built not just for the
journey, but for the everyday life
that happens in between.

Winter Motoring:
Is Your Car Ready
for the Cold?
Winter in the UK brings darker days,
dropping temperatures and unpredictable
weather - all of which can put extra
strain on your car.
From heavy rain and icy roads to low winter sun and fog, now
is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is prepared.
A few simple checks - or better still, a professional winter
service - can keep you safer and help prevent costly
breakdowns when you least expect them.
Start by looking at your tyres, which are crucial for
maintaining grip on wet and icy roads. Ensure they have at
least 3mm of tread and are inflated to the right pressure; cold
weather causes pressure to fall quickly. If you’re unsure what
to look for, a garage can assess your tyres and advise on
replacements or winter tyres if you do a lot of rural driving.
Cold weather is particularly tough on car batteries. Older
batteries can struggle on frosty mornings, leading to those
dreaded non-starts. A winter service includes a battery test
to check its health - a quick, inexpensive check that can save
you from being stranded.
Your lights, wipers and fluid levels are also vital for winter
visibility. With long nights and frequent rain or fog, it’s easy
to miss worn wipers or a dim headlight. A service will ensure
bulbs, wipers, oil, screenwash and coolant (antifreeze) are all
topped up and in good condition.
It’s also worth keeping a winter emergency kit in the boot,
including a torch, blanket, de-icer, ice scraper, phone charger
and snacks - small items that make a big difference if you’re
delayed.
Booking a winter service gives you peace of mind that your
car is thoroughly checked by professionals. It’s a simple step
that can help keep you safe, comfortable and confidently on
the road all season long.

Nine Mistakes to Avoid
When Separating and
How to Fix Them by
instructing One Solicitor
in the One Couple, One
Lawyer Process
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Separation doesn’t have to be a struggle. Here’s how to
avoid the common pitfalls of divorce and find a fair and
cost-effective way forward together.
A Better Way to Separate
Separation and divorce are among the
most difficult transitions any family
can face. Yet more couples today are
discovering that it’s possible to part ways
with dignity, fairness and compassion
without the stress, hostility and cost of a
traditional court process.
At Just Family Law, we believe that
separation should protect family
relationships, not destroy them. Our “Just
One Couple, One Lawyer” approach
offers a calm, transparent and fair
alternative to the traditional two-lawyer
model, helping couples make informed
decisions about their future together with
support and legal advice.
Mistake 1: Assuming Divorce Must Be
a Battle
Many couples believe conflict is
inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be that
way. The moment each partner instructs
a separate lawyer, the tone can become
adversarial. Letters fly back and forth,
positions become entrenched, and
communication breaks down.
FIX: Choose a process where both of you
work with one neutral lawyer. You’ll stay
focused on solutions, not blame.
Mistake 2: Thinking You Can’t Share a
Lawyer
It’s a common misconception that
couples can’t use the same solicitor. In
fact, some experienced family solicitors
are trained to represent both partners
where there’s trust, transparency and a
shared intention for a fair outcome.
FIX: Our “Just One Couple, One Lawyer
model ensures both voices are heard,
and the advice given benefits you both.
Mistake 3: Believing a 50:50 Split Is
Always Fair
A fair division isn’t always mathematically
equal. It depends on needs,
contributions, child arrangements and the
type of assets.
FIX: A neutral lawyer will guide you
through financial disclosure and help
you reach an agreement that balances
competing needs and considers your
family’s circumstances.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Pensions and
Future Income
Pensions are often a family’s biggest
financial asset after the home, yet they’re
frequently overlooked.
FIX: Get expert legal advice and financial
guidance to ensure long-term security for
you both
Mistake 5: Trying to Do It Yourself
DIY divorces can seem simpler, but they
often lead to unenforceable or unfair
agreements.
FIX: Early professional advice protects
your rights and prevents costly mistakes
down the line.
Mistake 6: Forgetting the Children
Children thrive when their parents
communicate respectfully. High conflict
damages that.
FIX: A joint process promotes coparenting
and helps parents focus on
their children’s wellbeing.
Mistake 7: Making Decisions based on
Emotions
Separation is emotional, but decisions
made under pressure can have lasting
consequences.
FIX: Take time, seek balanced legal input
and ensure every choice supports your
long-term future.
Mistake 8: Overlooking Confidentiality
Court proceedings are increasingly
public, exposing private details.
FIX: A joint lawyer process keeps your
personal and financial information private,
protecting your reputation and family
relationships.
Mistake 9: Believing it is too expensive
to instruct a solicitor
The typical costs of a court process are
prohibitively expensive and can run to
tens of thousands of pounds each
FIX: The Just One Couple One Lawyer
process is affordable. It is suitable for
cases involving high value and complex
assets as well as straightforward cases
with a high level of agreement. Typically,
the average cost is less than 5% of fully
contested court proceedings to reach an
agreement together and obtain a binding
financial consent order.
How the “One Couple, One Lawyer”
Process Works
You each begin with a confidential
discovery call to check the process is right
for you. Then you’ll provide full financial
disclosure, attend an individual and joint
meetings with your lawyer, explore options
together, and reach an agreement that’s
legally binding and court approved.

Raising Resilient Children
How Schools and Families Can Work Together
Resilience has become one of the
defining qualities we hope to nurture in
today’s children. In a world that feels
increasingly fast-paced, high-pressure
and unpredictable, helping young people
develop emotional strength, confidence
and kindness isn’t simply a “nice to
have” — it’s an essential part of preparing
them for adolescence and adulthood.
Across the UK, both independent
and state schools are placing greater
emphasis on pastoral care, wellbeing and
character education, recognising that
emotional resilience is just as important
as academic achievement. But the most
powerful results come when schools and
families work together.
Independent schools, in particular, have
the scope to take a holistic approach
to pastoral support. Many now embed
wellbeing into the curriculum, teaching
pupils how to recognise and regulate
their emotions, manage setbacks and
practise empathy. Programmes such
as mindfulness sessions, reflective
journalling and outdoor learning
help children to slow down, build
self-awareness and develop coping
strategies. Increasingly, schools are
training teachers in mental health first aid
and investing in dedicated pastoral teams
who work closely with pupils from early
years upwards. Crucially, these schools
recognise that resilience isn’t built
through avoidance or ‘bubble-wrapping’
but through gentle, supported exposure
to challenge.
State schools, too, are doing vital work
— often under tighter constraints. Many
have embraced restorative practices,
peer-mentoring programmes and nurture
groups to give children safe spaces
to talk, problem-solve and strengthen
relationships. While resources may
differ, the shared goal remains the
same: helping children understand that
mistakes, setbacks and difficult emotions
are part of life, and that asking for help is
a sign of strength, not weakness.
The role of the family is equally crucial.
Parents and carers set the emotional tone
at home, modelling how to respond to
disappointment, frustration or conflict.
A resilient child learns not from perfectly
calm environments but from seeing
adults handle imperfect moments with
honesty and compassion. Something as
simple as narrating your own problemsolving
— “I’m feeling overwhelmed, so
I’m going to take a moment before I try
again” — teaches emotional literacy more
powerfully than any worksheet.
Schools consistently report that resilience
flourishes when home and school
communicate openly. Regular check-ins,
shared language around emotions, and
collaborative approaches to behaviour
help ensure children receive a consistent
message. When a child knows that the
adults in their world are working as a
team, they feel safer and more secure —
and secure children are naturally more
confident and adaptable.
Kindness, too, is a cornerstone of
resilience. Teaching children to be
compassionate towards others begins
with encouraging compassion towards
themselves. Schools that celebrate effort,
not just results, help pupils recognise that
growth matters more than perfection.
Families that prioritise kindness at home
— through volunteering, gratitude rituals
or simple acts of helpfulness — reinforce
the idea that resilience is not only
about personal strength, but also about
contributing positively to the community.
Ultimately, raising resilient children is
a shared responsibility. It’s not about
shielding them from life’s bumps but
equipping them with the emotional toolkit
to navigate them. When schools and
families work in harmony — combining
structured pastoral support with warm,
supportive home environments —
children learn that they can handle
challenges, express their feelings and
care deeply for others. And in a changing
world, those are the qualities that will
carry them far.

CHRISTMAS
Crackers
Delicious recipes for the big day, from the
eggs-perts at Clarence Court
Butternut Squash,
Burford Brown &
Chestnut Strudel
This recipe is a great vegetarian
Christmas alternative to a nut
roast. Sweet and spicy squash and
chestnuts encased in rich pancakes
and flaky pastry. Cut through the
strudel to find beautiful soft-boiled
Burford Brown eggs hiding inside as
an added treat.
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours
Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
1.5kg butternut squash
Sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon chilli flakes
½ teaspoon smoked paprika, plus a
little for sprinkling
½ teaspoon ground cumin
Whole nutmeg
1 onion, peeled and grated
150g vac-pac chestnuts
50g breadcrumbs
2 sprigs rosemary, leaves picked
5 Burford Brown eggs
3 ready-made crêpes
2 × 500g ready-made puff pastry
METHOD
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/360°F/
gas mark 4. Roast the squash for
around 1 hour until cooked through.
Halve the squash, scoop out the
seeds, then scoop the flesh into a
large mixing bowl.
Add the spices, grated onion,
crumbled chestnuts and rosemary,
then stir in the breadcrumbs. Allow
the mixture to cool.
Soft-boil 4 of the eggs, cool and
peel.
Pre-heat the oven to 200°C/400°F/
gas mark 6. Line a baking tray with
greaseproof paper.
Roll out one block of pastry into a
35cm × 20cm rectangle and place
it on the lined tray. Lay over 2 of the
crêpes so they slightly overlap.
Spoon half the squash mixture into
a log shape on top of the crêpes,
leaving a 3cm border around the
edge.
Arrange the eggs in a line over the
mixture and spoon the remaining
filling over to encase them.
Lay the remaining crêpe over the
top and wrap the base crêpe edges
up and over. Whisk the remaining
egg and brush a little over the
crêpes to seal them in place.
Brush beaten egg around the pastry
border. Roll out the second pastry
block and drape it over the filling.
Gently press to remove air bubbles.
Trim and crimp the edges with a
fork. Brush all over with beaten egg
and cut 3 slits in the top. Sprinkle
with sea salt and smoked paprika.
Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour, until
golden and cooked through. Allow
to rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Twice Baked Cheese
& Mushroom Soufflés
This is a fantastic recipe to make as
a starter or light lunch (though it’s
pretty indulgent!). You can make the
soufflés a day or a few hours before
serving, then reheat in cream and
extra cheese. Serve with a citrus
and peppery leaf salad.
Prep Time: 40 minutes, plus chilling
for a few hours or overnight
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
125g mixed wild mushrooms (wiped
clean)
1 clove of garlic
1 tablespoon butter
Sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
a few sprigs of thyme (leaves
picked)
50g butter plus extra for greasing a
small handful of finely grated mature
cheddar
40g plain flour
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
250ml milk
a good grating of whole nutmeg a
pinch of chilli powder
a few chives (finely chopped)
3 Clarence Court Large Burford
Brown eggs (separated)
200g mixed-strength grated cheese
(add some crumbled cheese if you
like, such as a little soft goat’s or
blue)
150ml double cream.
METHOD
Start by preparing the mushrooms.
Place a medium-sized frying pan
over a medium heat and add the
butter. Let it froth a little, then stir
in the garlic followed swiftly by
75g of the mushrooms. Stir-fry for
a minute, then season with salt
and pepper and pick in the thyme
leaves. Fry gently for a few minutes
until softened, then set aside on a
plate.
Take six ramekins or tea cups and
brush well with butter. Sprinkle the
inside of each with grated mature
cheddar, then tap out any excess.
Place a medium saucepan over a
low heat and add the butter. Allow
it to bubble, then stir in the flour
and mustard. Cook for one minute
until frothing, then slowly pour in
the milk, whisking continuously until
the sauce has thickened. Stir in the
nutmeg, chilli powder, chives, and
150g of the cheese. Whisk until the
cheese has melted, then whisk in
the egg yolks.
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/
gas mark 6.
In a clean bowl, whisk the egg
whites until they form stiff peaks.
Fold a spoonful of the whisked
whites into the sauce to loosen
the mixture, then gently fold in the
rest using a metal spoon until just
combined.
Fill a kettle and bring it to the boil.
Divide the fried mushrooms between
the ramekins, then fill each with the
soufflé mixture. Place the ramekins
in a deep roasting tray, then
carefully pour boiling water into the
tray until it reaches halfway up the
ramekins. Bake for 15–20 minutes,
or until golden and risen. Remove
from the oven and allow to cool
completely. Run a knife around the
edge of each soufflé, turn out onto a
tray, cover, and chill overnight.
When ready to serve, preheat the
oven to 220°C/420°F/gas mark 7.
Place the soufflés in a baking dish,
pour over the cream, and sprinkle
with the remaining cheese. Bake for
10–15 minutes until golden.
Meanwhile, pan-fry the remaining
mushrooms. Remove from the oven,
scatter over the mushrooms, and
serve with a winter leaf salad.

Spiced Snowflake
Cookies
This quick and easy recipe
has all the flavour of traditional
gingerbread without having to
make a hot mix or chill the dough.
The pretty white royal icing piping
brings them to life
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 20–30 mixed-size cookies
INGREDIENTS
120g soft brown sugar
80g molasses sugar
200g soft unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
1 Clarence Court Burford Brown
egg
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger
½ teaspoon mixed spice
375g plain flour
For the icing:
250g icing sugar
1 Clarence Court Burford Brown
egg white
Juice of one lemon
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Beat
the sugars, butter and vanilla
together until combined. Add the
egg and beat until incorporated.
Mix the spices into the flour to
distribute evenly, then add to the
bowl and beat on slow speed
until just combined.
Tip the dough onto a surface and
bring it together into a ball.
Roll out to an even thickness
of approximately 5mm (use
marzipan spacers or guide sticks
for consistency).
Cut out snowflake shapes
and place on the parchmentlined
trays, leaving a couple of
centimetres between each.
Bake for 12–15 minutes until a
darker golden brown and firm to
the touch. Leave to cool on the
trays for 5 minutes, then transfer
to a wire rack to cool completely.
To decorate, mix the royal icing
to soft-peak consistency and
pipe over the cookies to create
snowflake designs.
Add edible glitter or shimmer
if desired, and leave to dry
completely overnight before
wrapping.

Why UK Homeowners Are
Focusing on Design, Flow and
Value — Not Just Size
There’s a quiet revolution happening in
British home renovation. For years the
default mindset was: “Let’s go as big
as possible.” Build out, build up, build
across — more square metres meant a
better home.
But with build costs rising, planning rules
tightening and homeowners becoming
more design-savvy, priorities are shifting.
The new goal isn’t size for its own sake.
It’s space that genuinely works.
Across the country, more homeowners
are discovering that a thoughtful,
well-planned 18–25 square metres
can outperform a sprawling 40–45m²
extension in liveability, comfort and resale
value. And that shift — from quantity to
quality — is reshaping the way we think
about renovating.
Here’s how to approach your project with
clarity, confidence and good return on
investment.

1. UNDERSTAND THE REAL
COST OF EXTENDING
Let’s get straight to numbers. For most
regions in the UK:
Single-storey extensions typically cost
£2,000–£3,000 per m²
Higher-end finishes or complex structural
changes can push it above £3,200/m².
Simpler builds may come out closer to
£1,800 per m², but relying on the lower
end is risky.
That means:
20m² = £40,000–£60,000
25m² = £50,000–£75,000
30m² = £60,000–£90,000+
And that excludes VAT, professional fees,
new kitchens, glazing upgrades and
landscaping. Add those in, and you begin
to see why a focus on thoughtful design
— not just brute size — is the most costeffective
path.
2. WHY BIGGER ISN’T
ALWAYS BETTER
It’s an easy trap: assume that extending
by 40m² automatically doubles the value
added compared to 20m². But in reality:
Poorly placed extensions create dark,
awkward rooms.
Too much open-plan space can feel
cavernous and echoey.
If the garden is swallowed, buyers may
be put off.
A huge extension can make the original
house feel unbalanced.
Good space beats more space. A small
extension with great flow and plenty
of light can dramatically improve your
lifestyle — and command stronger resale
value.
ASK YOURSELF: WHAT
PROBLEM AM I SOLVING?
Upgrading your home should start with
lifestyle, not measurements:
DO YOU NEED:
A larger kitchen for family cooking?
A better connection to the garden?
Space for homework or remote
working?
A utility area to hide the chaos?
A dining area that works year-round?
GoodHome Garcinia Gloss Sandstone kitchen cabinet doors
A good architect will design a solution
around these needs. They may even
recommend a smaller footprint once they
see how to reorganise existing space.
That kind of strategic planning can save
£20,000–£40,000.
3. THE VALUE EQUATION:
WHAT REALLY ADDS TO
YOUR HOME’S WORTH
Estate agents often quote a 10–20%
uplift from a well-executed extension. But
the value added depends on:
a) Your street’s ceiling price
If similar properties top out at £550,000,
spending £250,000 on an extension is
unlikely to return its cost.
b) The type of space created
Living-kitchen-diner spaces, extra
bedrooms and bathrooms, and improved
rear access usually rank highest.
c) Light and layout
Buyers make emotional decisions.
Light-filled, well-flowing spaces feel
“expensive,” even if they’re modestly
sized.
d) Balance
If your 3-bed semi becomes a 5-bed with
a tiny garden, value may fall.
Important: Estate agents repeatedly
report that buyers prefer well-planned,
medium-sized space to large but clumsy
additions.
4. WHERE TO SPEND (AND
WHERE TO SAVE)
SPEND ON:
STRUCTURE AND INSULATION
There’s no point adding space that’s
cold in winter or roasting in summer. Wellinsulated
walls, a proper roof structure
and airtightness are essential.
GLAZING
Large windows or sliding doors transform
even a modest extension. Prioritise energyefficient
glazing with good u-values.
KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS
They don’t need to be luxury, but they
should be robust and attractive. Midrange
quality makes a strong impression.
LIGHT
Rooflights, clerestory windows, glazed
corners — features that bring light deep
into the home are worth every penny.
PROFESSIONAL DESIGN
A small spend on clever planning can
save thousands later.

SAVE ON:
INITIAL FINISHINGS
Choose sensible flooring and lighting for
now. Statement pieces can wait.
LANDSCAPING
You don’t need a Chelsea Flower Show
garden on move-in day. Simple and tidy is fine.
OVER-SPECIFYING MATERIALS
Brushed brass taps and Italian marble
tiles look amazing — but rarely add
matching value.
5. HOW TO DESIGN SPACE
THAT LIVES WELL
A good extension doesn’t just add square
metres — it improves how you live.
FOCUS ON FLOW
Think how you move through the home:
enter, hang coats, drop bags, cook, eat,
relax, step outside. Put the extension in
service to those rhythms.
PRIORITISE DAYLIGHT
Natural light is the number-one ingredient
in making modest spaces feel generous.
LINK TO THE GARDEN
Indoor-outdoor connection is one of the
biggest value drivers for modern buyers.
DON’T CREATE LEFTOVER
ROOMS
Avoid narrow slivers of space or unused
corridors — they cost money but add
nothing.
CONSIDER FUTURE
FLEXIBILITY
Could today’s snug become tomorrow’s
small office? Could the dining area host
elderly parents in future? Flexible space
holds value.
6. THE PLANNING MINDSET:
THOUGHTFUL OVER HUGE
If there’s a guiding principle in UK
renovations today, it’s this:
“Build better, not bigger.”
Homeowners who rush into large
extensions without considering:
• light
• proportions
• ceiling height
• garden size
• resale value
• heating efficiency
• the flow of old-to-new
… often end up with costly regrets — and
overruns.
Those who take time to plan small but
beautifully designed additions enjoy better
results and calmer building experiences.
FINAL WORD
A home extension is one of the biggest
investments you’ll ever make — emotionally
and financially. But it’s also one of the most
rewarding, when done with clarity and
intention.
Forget the old mantra of “bigger is best.”
The new truth is far more practical — and far
more exciting:
Beautiful, well-planned space beats brute
square footage every time.
It improves daily life, enhances your home’s
feel, and often adds more value than a much
larger (and far more expensive) build.
Plan smart, design thoughtfully, and extend
in a way that makes your home a joy to live
in — today and for many years to come.

NOTES FROM THE GARDEN
Escape to the garden
The end of a year and the beginning of a
new one is a time for reflection.
If you are getting a bit ‘stir crazy’ over the Christmas period
you can escape to the garden, breath the air, listen to the
birds and there are always jobs to be done. If you don’t have
a garden, a walk in the park is a great refresher.
The greenhouse or shed is a
lovely retreat when the weather
is really inclement and there
are so many things you can do.
Pot washing might seem dull
but diseases lurk and there is a
real joy when needing a pot to
have a range of clean stacked
pots to choose from! Got lots
of bits of wood and bamboo
canes, pine cones etc? Go on,
build a bug hotel- the best fun
ever!
If you planted bulbs for indoor
flowering now is a good time
to check their progress - easy
to forget.
Bird feeders need topping up - and cleaning too, hygiene
is so important for our avian chums, and there are some
excellent websites and books to check on what to feed them
with to ensure good health.
After this years bumper crop, it is time to prune apple and
pear trees - the freestanding plants not the ones trained
against walls - and if you have space to stack some
pruning’s, insects will thank you!
Make sure any winter protection that you have put in place,
mulch, straw coverings etc is still secure - and reward
yourself by snuggling up with a garden book or magazineyou
deserve it!

CHRISTMAS CARE
CONSIDERATIONS:
How to Spot When a Loved One
May Need More Support
The festive season is a time of
togetherness – families reunite,
homes are filled with laughter, and
routines often shift as everyone
relaxes into holiday mode. But amid
the celebrations, Christmas can
also shine a light on changes in
the wellbeing of older relatives or
loved ones who may be struggling
more than before. Noticing the
subtle signs that someone might
need additional help is crucial, and
knowing what support is available –
including respite care – can make all
the difference.
Recognising the signs that more
care may be needed:
For families who don’t see each
other regularly, spending time
together over Christmas can reveal
changes that have gone unnoticed
throughout the year. Here are
some key signs that a loved one
might need a care assessment or
additional support:
Changes in personal appearance
or hygiene
If someone who is usually wellgroomed
appears unkempt, wears
the same clothes for days, or
neglects basic hygiene, it may
indicate they’re struggling with daily
routines such as washing, dressing,
or doing laundry.
Weight loss or poor appetite
Keep an eye on eating habits –
unopened food in the fridge, expired
items, or weight loss could suggest
difficulty preparing meals, reduced
appetite, or even underlying health
issues.
Confusion or memory lapses
Occasional forgetfulness is
normal, but if a loved one seems
disorientated, repeats questions,
forgets familiar names, or becomes
easily confused about time or place,
it could signal cognitive decline or
the early stages of dementia.
Withdrawal or changes in mood
If someone who is usually sociable
appears withdrawn, anxious, or
unusually irritable, it might reflect
loneliness, depression, or the
emotional strain of coping alone.
Mobility or safety concerns
Look for bruises, unsteady walking,
or hesitation when climbing stairs.
These could suggest falls or fear of
falling – a major risk for older adults
living independently.
A home that’s no longer cared for
An untidy or cluttered home, unpaid
bills, or unopened post can be
indicators that managing household
tasks has become too challenging.
If you notice several of these signs,
it may be time to arrange a care
assessment. This free assessment,
carried out by your local council,
evaluates what level of help
someone needs with daily living –
from occasional home visits to more
regular personal care support.
When Christmas plans change -
considering respite care:
The festive period can also bring
practical challenges. Perhaps
your usual carer is away, or your
family routine has shifted. Respite
care offers a short-term solution,
providing professional support while
giving family carers a well-earned
break.
Respite options vary – from in-home
carers who provide help for a few
hours or days, to temporary stays
in a care home where round-theclock
support is available. It can
be particularly valuable for families
balancing holiday travel, illness, or
increased responsibilities during
Christmas.
Planning ahead:
If you think a loved one may benefit
from extra help, start by contacting
your local authority’s adult social
care team. Even if full-time care isn’t
yet needed, a care assessment can
open the door to practical advice,
home adaptations, and support
services that make independent
living easier.
Christmas is a moment to reconnect
– and sometimes that connection
reveals that it’s time for more care,
compassion, and support for those
we love most.

CLEAN YOUR
HOME
The Smart Way
The Hoover 2-In-1 Robot Vacuum Cleaner & Mop –
HG4 Hydro is a smart, well-rounded option for anyone
looking to maintain clean floors with minimal effort.
Combining strong suction power with an effective
mopping function, it’s designed to tackle everyday
messes across a range of floor types, making it
particularly suitable for busy households or anyone
wanting to streamline their cleaning routine.
Setup is refreshingly straightforward. The companion
app guides you through connecting the robot to your
home Wi-Fi, mapping your rooms, and setting up
schedules. Once running, the HG4 Hydro uses precise
navigation to move efficiently around furniture and
edges, rarely missing patches or becoming confused
by obstacles. Its suction power is impressive for a robot
at this price point, picking up crumbs, dust and pet
hair with ease. The 2-in-1 mop feature is a welcome
addition: while it won’t replace a deep manual mop, it
does a very capable job of freshening hard floors and
lifting light marks.
Battery life performs well too, generally covering an
average UK home’s downstairs area in one go. If it does
run low, it returns to its dock, recharges, and resumes
where it left off — a small touch that makes a big
difference in day-to-day use. Noise levels are moderate,
never intrusive, and the dustbin is quick to empty.
There are a few considerations: like most robot
vacuums, it performs best on clear floors, and deep-pile
carpets can reduce its effectiveness. The water tank is
also modest, meaning larger homes may need a refill
mid-clean.
Overall, the Hoover HG4 Hydro offers excellent value for
money. It’s reliable, easy to use, and genuinely reduces
the amount of daily floor cleaning required — a practical,
well-designed helper for modern living.
