When it comes to
love languages,
mine is quality
time. Sure, acts
of service are
appreciated (it’s a delightful day when
my husband does the dishes!) and gifts
are always welcome (dainty gemstone
rings are my thing!), but the real way to
my heart is through shared adventures
and memory-making. It’s no surprise
then that come Christmastime,
my favorite gifts—both to give and
receive—are experiences: museum
memberships, concert tickets, cooking
classes…
My most memorable childhood
Christmas was the year my parents
skipped the toys altogether and
surprised my siblings and me with
a trip to Hawaii. We each opened a
clue—a beach-themed calendar, flip-flops, and sun hat—before unwrapping the
big reveal: our island itinerary. We were overjoyed and quickly forgot about all the
tangible (ahem, plastic) “things” on our holiday wish lists.
Whatever your idea of the perfect present may be, I’m certain you’ll find it in
this issue’s “Holiday Gift Guide” (page 58). Carefully
“
Your children
need your
presence more
than your
presents.”
—Jesse Jackson
curated by yours truly and our associate editor, Caitlin
Emmett, it’s packed with 50-plus ideas—experiences
included—for everyone on your list: the animal lover,
trendsetter, wellness warrior, cool kid, homebody, and
host. The best part? Everything can be purchased at a
mom-and-pop shop or is handmade by somebody who
lives locally. Talk about a purchase with purpose.
If you’re searching for festive ways to celebrate the
season, our Calendar (page 28) highlights the region’s
most joyful happenings, from twinkling tree lightings and cheerful train rides to
Santa fun runs and ice-skating outings.
And if the holidays don’t feel complete without baking at least one batch of
something sweet (I see you, fellow flour-dusted friends!), we have you covered. Flip
to “4 Must-Make Christmas Cookies” (page 80), featuring delicious recipes courtesy of
beloved local bakeries—perfect for gifting or, let’s be honest, keeping all to yourself.
Finally, because this time of year has a way of stretching our mental health
thin—overspending, overindulging, and overcommitting rarely spark joy—
contributor Emily Peter-Corey put together “12 Days of Wellness” (page 34), a
simple, doable guide to cultivating a happier, healthier, more balanced you. I’ve
been following the very first tip (“drink a glass of water before your morning cup
of coffee”) since the beginning of 2025 and can confidently say it’s made a massive
difference.
As you dive into this issue—and into the holiday season—may you find
moments that matter, gifts that feel good, and memories that last long after the
wrapping paper is gone. After all, presence really is the greatest present of all.
Cheers!

“Heading to Apple Hill to cut down our

ourselves to something
sweet at Snooks. It’s a
special tradition that my
family and I truly treasure.”

Christmas with our baby girl,
so we’re just beginning
to build traditions. One I
already love, though, is
creating and sending out

“Setting up the house for
Christmas. There's something
magical about decorating
the tree with all our
cherished ornaments—
cozy fire crackling,
Christmas music filling
the air, and a hot toddy in
hand.”—Debbie Juhos
“When I was little, my parents always
let me open one small gift on
Christmas Eve. I remember
the excitement building up
all day long—it was such a
sweet tradition. Though we
haven’t done it in years,
now that I have little ones,
I’m excited to bring it back!”
—Emily Peter-Corey

when family members put

simply enjoy each other's
company and celebrate
the season that I cherish the

Reno
Explore
E Spot
by MEGAN WISKUS
Once beloved for its
buffets, late-night
blackjack tables, and
neon nostalgia, today’s
Reno buzzes just as
bright outside the
casino walls. Thanks
to a recent wave of
revitalization, “The
Biggest Little City in the
World” is now home
to walkable districts
brimming with buzzy,
SLEEP IN STYLE
independently owned
restaurants, craft
breweries, and cool
coffee shops; public art
at every turn; museums
worth musing over;
and endless outdoor
escapes. Here’s your
cheat sheet to 10 mustdos
in this multifaceted,
high-desert destination.
Breathe easy at Whitney Peak
Hotel (whitneypeakhotel.com), Reno’s
first non-smoking, non-gaming hotel—and
arguably its hippest. With plush bedding,
mountain views, and Sierra-inspired
décor, it’s a breath of fresh (non-casino)
air. In between snoozing, you can scale
the world’s tallest artificial climbing wall (164
feet!), relax in the Club Level Lounge with
complimentary sips and snacks, or refuel at
the on-site restaurant. Once you check in,
you may never want to check out.
A SCIENCE EXPERIENCE
Feed your sense of wonder at Terry Lee
Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, aka “The
Discovery” (nvdm.org)—a multi-level, handson
science museum where both kids and
grown-ups can geek out. Explore interactive
exhibits about astronomy, human anatomy,
and green energy; climb a three-story
“jungle gym” that teaches visitors about the
water cycle; or partake in maker labs and live
demos. This isn’t your average “look, don’t
touch” museum—it’s full-contact curiosity
at its best.
FEAST FAMILY-STYLE
If you’ve never tried Basque cuisine,
Reno’s legendary Louis Basque
Corner (louisbasquecorner.com) is the
place to dig in. Since 1967, this downtown
institution has been dishing up hearty,
family-style feasts served at long communal
tables where strangers quickly become
friends. The prix fixe dinner includes a
surplus of sides—Basque beans, bread,
soup, salad, and fries—plus a glass of wine,
entrée, and dessert. Come hungry and a
little thirsty—the signature Picon Punch
packs a delightfully bitter, boozy punch.
GO WITH THE FLOW
Reno’s renaissance shines along the
Riverwalk District (renoriver.org)—a scenic,
strollable stretch hugging the banks of the
Truckee River. Lined with lush parks, vibrant
public art, charming bridges, and inviting

DRINK LOCAL
Just off the main drag sits the state’s oldest
green spaces, it’s the heart of downtown’s
outdoor life. Along the way, pop into local
restaurants, pubs, shops, museums, and
more; when the weather warms, join Float
Reno (floatreno.com) for a self-guided, allinclusive
tubing adventure that’s sure to float
your boat.
Ceasars Entertainment
operating brewery, Great Basin Brewing Co.
(greatbasinbrewingco.com)—a hoppin’ place
that pours Nevada pride by the pint. Awardwinning
brews aside (the Ichthyosaur
“Icky” IPA is a must!), they also serve hearty
pub grub (juicy burgers, hand-tossed
pizzas, and beer cheese mac with garlic
breadcrumbs)—all in a cozy, lodge-like
setting that’s fun and family-friendly.
GET LUCKY
If you’re craving the quintessential Reno
experience—gambling, headline shows, and
24-hour dining—don’t miss Eldorado Resort
Casino, Circus Circus Reno Hotel & Casino,
and Silver Legacy Resort Casino. The trio of
resorts is conveniently connected (no need
to brave bad weather between blackjack
hands) and operates under the Caesars
Entertainment umbrella (caesars.com/reno).
Thanks to 2,500-plus slot machines, 84 table
games, and Reno’s only Topgolf Swing Suite,
you’ll find plenty of ways to test your luck—
and your swing.
FUEL UP
Ask a local where to eat clean, colorful, and
delicious, and they’ll likely point you to Great
Full Gardens (greatfullgardens.com). This
MidTown hotspot hums with good energy
and even better food. Don’t let the multipage
menu overwhelm you, either—quantity
and quality is their special sauce. From
vegan Buddha bowls and a grass-fed beef
banh mi to hearty benedicts with pastureraised
eggs and bright, fresh beverages,
everything is as nutritious as it is delicious.
BE ART SMART
Swap the casinos for culture at the Nevada
Museum of Art (nevadaart.org)—the Silver
State’s only museum accredited by the
American Alliance of Museums. Inside the
120,000-square-foot structure, discover an
ever-rotating lineup of thought-provoking
exhibitions across four floors, plus
panoramic city views from the rooftop and a
craveable café.
HIT THE SLOPES
Skip the more touristy Tahoe ski resorts
and head to Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe (skirose.
com), a locals-loved mountain with serious
altitude…and attitude. With a base elevation
of 8,260 feet (the highest in the region),
you’re guaranteed snow day success. Add
in wide-open runs, jaw-dropping views of
both Reno and Lake Tahoe, and a friendly,
no-fuss vibe, and you’ve got yourself a
mountain that’s all thrill, no frill.
GET OUTSIDE
Roughly 45 minutes from downtown, you’ll
find “America’s Most Beautiful Bikeway”—

Day in the Life
Ananda Rochita
by CAROLINE KINGS
Emmy Award-winning investigative
reporter and former Division 1
golfer Ananda Rochita is a natural
storyteller with an inquisitive mind
and a community-focused outlook.
With a career that spans both
journalism and leadership, she’s
worked with major organizations
like ABC10 and the California
Manufacturers & Technology
Association, covering critical issues
and uncovering stories that matter.
Today, Rochita brings her wealth
of experience to her new role as
president and CEO of the Roseville
Chamber of Commerce, where she's
continuing to make waves and drive
meaningful change in the region.
Prior to your current role, you
were a trusted news anchor
and investigative reporter. What
attracted you to journalism?
Indonesian is my first language, and I learned
how to speak English through broadcast
news. I always thought it was an important job and envisioned it being a
great career.
When I was 10 years old, attending a small Catholic school, I was
really upset when they changed the uniform from ankle socks to kneehigh
socks—ankle socks were popular at the time!
There was no explanation why, so I decided to write a story about it and
interview the people who made the decision. It was incredibly controversial
and received a lot of attention, but the school ended up changing the
uniform back to give students different options.
The experience provided a glimpse into the power of journalism and the
importance of asking ‘why?’ when certain decisions are made.
How did you find stepping away from journalism?
When I became the VP of communications at the California
Manufacturers & Technology Association (CMTA), I was tasked with

20 stylemg.com | DECEMBER 2025 | /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags
changing the narrative of manufacturing
with my storytelling skills—making
manufacturing exciting for younger
generations and educating the public
about how much manufacturing
contributes to the local economy.
One of the things I started was the
“Coolest Thing Made in California”
campaign, where the public nominated
California-manufactured products. The
first year Tesla won; and the second
year it was a company that made the
world’s fastest microchip!
FAVORITES
COFFEE SHOP:
Fourscore Coffee House. I
always ask them to surprise me
whenever I go, but I do love
their avocado toast and iced
London fog with brown sugar.
RESTAURANT:
Sienna! I appreciate that they
have a gluten-free menu and
always accommodate my dietary
restrictions.
Top photo courtesy of California Manufacturers & Technology Association. Other photo courtesy of Ananda Rochita.
WAY TO RELAX:
Working out. I wake up at 5 a.m.
and start my day at the gym.
WORK PERK:
The community and all the
wonderful people in it who have
welcomed me with open arms.
What drew you to the Roseville
Chamber of Commerce?
One of the things that excited me
about manufacturing was the many
facets of it. One day I was talking
about aerospace, and the next day I
was talking about almonds!
There were so many
opportunities, and I could see
that the Chamber has ample
opportunities, too. I loved the idea of
telling stories about the incredible
things happening in Roseville.
Here, city council and businesses
get along. They're extremely
passionate about the region, and
that's what really excites me—not to
mention all the investment coming
into the area.
You’ve had such an interesting
career so far, how does golf fit in?
I grew up playing with my dad, got
more competitive in high school, and
attended Mount St. Mary's University on
a D1 scholarship. Recently, I’ve started
playing again, though it’s more for fun!
As a wife and mom, how do
you balance your career and
family life?
I'm a planner! I love that in my new
role I'm able to plan out my
meetings and have events put
on my calendar weeks or days in
advance, so I can be present for
my team and family. There are
some unpredictable days, but it's
more predictable than not, and I
find fulfillment knowing my work
is serving the community.
I'm also lucky that my parents
don't live very far away and support
my husband and me with our
daughter. We try our best to carve
out date night weekends once a
month and/or an overnight trip.
I also wake up at 5 a.m. to
work out. Classes (barre, cycling,
and/or lifting) help me commit to
entering the studio at a certain
time. After my class is over, I
head straight home, go into ‘mom
mode,’ and help get my daughter
ready for school.

Spotlight on
Sidne Allinger
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
At a time in life when many
are looking forward to
retirement, Sidne Allinger
went back to college.
Choosing a major was easy.
“The only thing that kept
my attention was art,” says
Allinger. “I was filled with
fear, sitting in the front
of class with my reading
glasses, but the brilliant,
creative youth embraced
me with an enthusiasm I
did not expect. I was truly
at home.”
More than just an
academic or creative
pursuit, returning to
college was an opportunity
to heal an old wound.
“My son dropped out of
college in the middle
of his sophomore year,
surrendering a substantial
scholarship. I was
devastated,” she recalls. “I
did some therapeutic work
around my pain regarding
his decision, realizing I
had dropped out of college
during my sophomore year
for much the same reason.
The best way to heal this
wound was to return to school.”
Allinger graduated in 2020,
but remains a student at heart. In
September, she spent two weeks
in Italy, learning about the art of
sculpting stone and “exploring
the alleyways Michelangelo walked” centuries ago. She also opens her
studio to other artists, giving them access to clay, glazes, tools, and supplies.
“People are meant to work independently, but I am there to problem-solve or
suggest,” she says.
Allinger’s work is on display at Auburn’s Persimmon Art Gallery and on
her website (sidnefineart.com).
How did you get your start as an artist?
I was born with the soul of an artist. I do not remember a time I was not
dabbling in something with my hands. As a child in the early ’60s my
mother would make clay with us out of flour, salt, and food coloring. My
wandering, rebellious spirit was always easier focused and managed when

given a creative outlet. However, I was discouraged to pursue art as
a higher learning. My parents meant well, [but] I sometimes wonder
what could have been if I had majored in art after high school.
What do you enjoy about working with clay?
I love the forgiving nature of clay in its building phase. The feel
of it in my hands connects me to a childhood of mud pies and
homemade flour-salt clay. If I do not like what is happening, I
can fold it back into itself and start all over. I’m also forced to
practice the spiritual act of surrender and patience through the
entire process. Until a piece makes it through the drying time,
then one, often two firings, anything can go wrong. Surrender
and acceptance are the constant lessons.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Nature. I love hiking and am always examining how our outdoor
environment smells, is shaped and colored, or sounds. My high
school friend and host in Italy, Neal Barab, is also an inspiration.
He is doing things in stone I haven’t seen anywhere else. In
addition, I'm heavily influenced by Mexican sculptor Sergio
Bustamante, the grand work of Louise Bourgeois, and the spirit
of Frida Kahlo.
4.
5.
How do you approach each piece?
I typically have pictures or
sentiments in my head that I want
to express. When falling asleep
at night, I send up a prayer for
direction. If I wake up clear and
excited about that vision, I get to
work. You must work with patience
and respect for the medium. The clay
will not do certain things if you are
asking too soon. For instance, thin legs
cannot hold a heavy body if the clay
is too wet. Or if you have not prepped
properly, you are more apt to have a
kiln failure. So, I must work with the
clay, not on the clay. Finally, I surrender
expectations of exactly how it will look
until that final firing.
What do you hope viewers will
experience through your art?
I want them to find my work interesting enough to spend
time with it and evoke a feeling—sorrow, empathy, hope,
humor, and so on. Humor is a vital piece of me and my life,
so I try to elicit that sentiment as much as any.
Tell us about your recent trip to Italy.
Everywhere I turned, there was a deep, reverent love of
art. The lifestyle is rich—not just materially, but in rhythm,
beauty, and intention. My first week was spent in Pietrasanta,
a working-class town at the foot of the Apuan Alps and the
quarry where Michelangelo excavated the marble for his
masterpieces: David and Pietà. Walking the same narrow
alleyways and mountain paths he walked connected me to
a history of excellence and incredibly difficult work. It was
such a rich experience, but I missed my family and sculpture
work here. Our foothills are steeped with beauty I do not
take for granted. I’m ready to get back to work and express
the influence that is Italia!

12 Days of Wellness
by EMILY PETER-COREY
The season of giving is here—but have you
remembered the most important person on
your list? You! Sure, a little retail therapy
never hurts, but the greatest gift you can
give yourself is the gift of wellness. To help
you unwrap a healthier, more balanced
you, we spoke with four experts—Heather
Moss, LMFT, founder of Soul Journey
Therapy (souljourneytherapy.com); Sara
Aghamohammadi, MD, Chief Wellness
Officer at UC Davis Health (health.ucdavis.
edu); Pamela Connor, functional medicine
nutritionist, founder of Connor Wellness Clinic
(connorwellnessclinic.com); and Nancy Ryan,
MA, LMFT, CEO of Relationship Therapy
Center (therelationshiptherapycenter.com). In
the spirit of the season, they helped us gather
12 simple ways to nurture your body, mind, and
spirit. On the first day of wellness, my true love
gave to me...
1. HYDRATION
Start your morning with a full glass of water
before coffee or tea. Proper hydration boosts
energy, supports digestion, and helps regulate
mood and focus throughout the day.
2. MOVEMENT
Establishing and maintaining an exercise
routine is difficult. If you’re just starting out, or
perhaps you’re trying to create more time for
exercise in your busy life, set one small goal
to move your body for 15-20 minutes every
day. You can even break it up into shorter
segments scattered throughout the day. The
physical break will allow you to problemsolve
while reducing stress and fatigue. Over
time, increase the intensity of the movement
(like taking the stairs) or the amount of time
(adding five minutes). Also, remember that
movement can be fun: playing with your kids

or your pets, a walk-and-talk with
a friend or colleague, or an evening
stroll with your partner after dinner
can help you connect with others
while also taking care of yourself.
3. JOY
Each day, choose one small activity
that makes you smile—listening to a
favorite song, sipping tea, or savoring
sunlight. Intentionally weaving in joy
strengthens resilience and reminds
you that wellness can be simple.
Top photo © nuzza11 - stock.adobe.com. Bottom photo Alliance - stock.adobe.com.
4. CLEANLINESS
Pick one small area—your desk, a
drawer, or a bag—and tidy it for five
minutes. Clearing physical space
often brings a sense of mental clarity
and calm.
5. HEALTH
Aim for at least three different
colors of fruits or vegetables at one
meal. Each color represents unique
antioxidants and nutrients that fight
inflammation and boost immunity,
which is good for the body and the
brain. It also makes your plate more
vibrant and satisfying!
6. CONNECTION
Reach out to one person each day—a
quick text, call, or chat all count. Even
the smallest moments of connection
build belonging and support your
mental well-being.
7. BREATHING
Take three slow breaths before
shifting tasks—whether opening
email, starting your car, or walking
into a room. This small pause lowers
stress hormones, grounds you in
the present moment, and creates a
natural reset for your mind and body.
8. AWARENESS
Throughout your day, give someone
a compliment. Look for times when
you can genuinely point out what
went well. Of course, this could be
aimed at your partner or a family
member, but it could also be given to
the friendly clerk who got your order
right or a person who went out of
their way to help you. As a result of
creating a positive connection and
spreading goodwill to others, your
mood will improve.
9. RESET
Every hour, stand up and move for
two minutes—walk, stretch, or climb
stairs. These mini movement “snacks”
improve circulation, boost focus, and
reduce stiffness from sitting too long.
Bonus: they add up to the equivalent
of a 20-minute workout.
10. UNPLUG
Pick a time each evening, at least 30
minutes before bed, and power down
all your screens. Use this time to
read, check in with your partner, drink
a cup of decaf tea, or stretch your
body. Undoubtedly, this cues your
nervous system that it’s safe to wind
down and will help improve your sleep
and reset your brain.
11. GRATITUDE
Each day, write down one thing you’re
grateful for—big or small. Focusing on
moments of appreciation shifts your
brain’s attention toward positivity,
boosting mood and resilience over time.
12. SLEEP
Getting adequate sleep is so
important to maintaining a healthy
life. It impacts your memory and
allows you to learn new information,
while also improving your physical
fitness. A full seven to eight hours
of sleep allows your brain and body
to integrate new physical skills
and reduces stress by helping you
regulate cortisol (a stress hormone),
which contributes to carb cravings,
water retention, and weight gain. One
small step toward getting more sleep?
Try going to bed 15 minutes earlier
each night. ”

Mount St. Helena Trail
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATION:
Robert Louis Stevenson State Park
(Calistoga).
DISTANCE:
9.8 miles out and back.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Hard.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
This hike offers incredible Wine
Country views, a satisfying workout,
and proximity to world-class
wineries—what’s not to love? Soak
in the breathtaking scenery, then
reward yourself with an awardwinning
sip of vino afterward.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
With 2,116 feet of elevation
gain, this trail calls for some
endurance. Mark your route once
you reach the fire road leading to
the summit (or use GPS) so you
don’t miss your turn on the way
down. It’s an ideal winter hike,
thanks to mild temperatures,
but always bring layers and be
ready for changing weather. Wear
sturdy shoes with good traction,
pack plenty of water, and (always,
always, always) leave no trace.
FUEL UP:
Named after Lovina Graves
Cyrus—a Donner Party survivor
who once owned the home
and property the restaurant
now occupies—Lovina
(lovinacalistoga.com) is womenowned
and led. Beyond its cozy
ambiance and delicious bites,
the restaurant provides full
benefits to all employees
(whether full- or parttime)
and offers a tipfree
dining experience.

A Brief
History of
Calistoga
Long before European
settlement, the area now known
as Calistoga was home to the
Wappo people, who cherished
its hot springs for their
medicinal properties.
Calistoga’s modern story began
after the Gold Rush, when
California’s first millionaire,
Samuel Brennan, visited and
recognized the area’s potential
as a resort destination centered
around the healing waters.
Inspired by Saratoga Springs
in New York, Brennan intended
to declare it the “Saratoga of
California,” but legend has it that
a slip of the tongue produced the
phrase “Calistoga of Sarafornia”—
and the name stuck.
Typical of the era’s tragic
pattern, the indigenous people
were seen as an obstacle to the
acquisition of the land. Violence
ensued, the Wappo people
were displaced, and laws were
passed to allow the indenture
of indigenous people. Disease
took the lives of many more,
and those who remained were
moved to reservations. Much of
their ancestral lands became
privately owned.
Tourism quickly flourished,
transforming Calistoga into
a fashionable retreat for San
Francisco’s elite. The arrival
of the railroad further fueled
its popularity, earning it the
nickname “Saratoga of the West.”
Agriculture soon began to thrive
alongside the spa industry,
thanks to the region’s fertile,
volcanic soil—particularly
grapes (most notably cabernet
sauvignon, chardonnay, and
merlot). Eventually, the area had
a dual identity: synonymous
with spa and viticulture.
Today, Calistoga stands as a
premier destination for those
seeking world-class wines,
luxurious resorts, farm-to-table
dining, and a restorative escape.

Belt It
Some trends come 2 Out
and go, cycling
in and out every few years—but a
great belt is always in style. Lately, I’ve
noticed women rediscovering just how
transformative this simple accessory
can be. A belt can define your waist,
elevate a casual dress, or give new life
to a favorite pair of jeans. Thinking
outside the box with your belt helps,
too. For a grunge vibe, use a shoelace;
for a flirty touch, go with a piece of lace
or ribbon; for a casual, laid-back look,
a scarf or bandana does the trick. The
possibilities are endless! I always tell
customers: it’s not just about holding
things together—it’s about pulling a
look together. In fact, one customer
recently loved my belt so much, she
tried to buy it right off of me (and I
almost let her!). Whether bold, subtle,
classic, or just there to hold your pants
up, the right belt adds a perfect touch
of confidence and polish. It’s proof that
timeless style is always on trend.

ASK THE
EXPERT
Q: WHAT'S THE SECRET TO
MAKING EXCEPTIONAL HOT
CHOCOLATE?
A: Great, homemade hot chocolate
starts with Nestlé Abuelita; originally
invented in Mexico, you can’t miss
the iconic logo of a grandma holding
a cup. To make it, add the thick, rich
chocolate to milk, letting it boil and
whisking the mixture until melted.
Next, add two cinnamon sticks and a
splash of vanilla. If you like it sweeter,
feel free to incorporate a bit of brown
sugar. Some people throw in a couple
of cloves for a holiday-worthy aroma,
though I personally don’t. When it’s
time to serve, top the hot chocolate
with a sprinkle of powdered chocolate,
a swirl of whipped cream, or mini
marshmallows—whatever you like.
After all, presentation is everything!

Behind Closed Doors
TOP CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS
by KOURTNEY JASON
If opening your closet feels like
opening Pandora’s box, you’re
not alone. Between overflowing
hangers, mismatched bins, and
the growing pile of “maybes,”
it’s easy for closets to become
the most chaotic (and hidden!)
space in the home. But with
thoughtful planning, as well
as guidance from local
organization and design pros,
your closet can become both
beautiful and functional.
Three local experts—Kristina
Lewis, owner of Blitz
Organization (blitzedh.com);
Cathy Tonks, owner and interior
designer at Designs With You
in Mind (designswithyouinmind.
net); and Barbara Brown,
designer at Closet Factory
(closetfactory.com)—share
their best advice for achieving
closet calm, no matter the
size or style of your space.
Purge with Purpose
Before any organizing magic can begin,
all the pros agree—you must start fresh.
“Empty out the entire closet, sort, and
decide what stays, goes, and gets relocated,”
Lewis says. “Separate and remove clothing
that no longer fits appropriately or objects
that are no longer used. Donate to your
favorite charity organization.”
Tonks agrees. “Always start with
purging,” she says. “Think about the last
time you wore something; if it’s not a staple,
such as a little black dress or something
serving you consistently, it’s best to let it go.”
This first step clears space for what
really matters and reveals how much room
you truly have.
Let the Space Lead
Once you’ve pared things down, Lewis
says to let your closet’s size and layout
guide your next steps. “Allow your
closet space to lead what stays,” she
says. “When your clothes can breathe, it
makes getting dressed and out the door
much easier. Keeping the hanger spacing
consistent and using a uniform style of
hangers will help with visual clutter and
create a nice layout for your closet.”
And remember, not every system
works for everyone. “There is no onesize-fits-all
organization for closets,”
Lewis adds. “If you’re not a fan of folding
and won’t keep up with it, hang as many
items as you can and utilize thin hangers
to maximize as much space as you can. If
you’re a folder, fold in such a way that you
can see everything within your drawer
or bins. File folding—when you fold a
clothing item to a square or rectangle
then stand it up on its side—is a great
way to view everything you have.”

Design Meets Function
While functionality is essential, Tonks
says that design details can transform a
closet into a personal sanctuary. “Built-in
drawers in your closet allow you to free
up space in your bedroom from bulky
dressers,” she says. “If your closet has
enough room for an island, be sure to
include a bench on each side for easy
seating to get ready and put on shoes.
If you don’t have room for an island,
consider a long bench.”
Lighting can make a difference, too.
“Adding linear lighting to the space
creates an ambiance but also lights your
clothes without needing direct overhead
lighting that can feel harsh,” Tonks says.
“This adds an additional layer to the
space that provides warmth and a highend,
finished look.”
Even color and materials play a role
in creating a closet you love. “Remember,
your closet doesn’t have to be white!”
Tonks says. “You can make your closet
feel like a true extension of your primary
bath by using pre-finished materials that
save on costs while retaining the design
of your space. Consider adding stone or
quartz countertops on closet cabinets to
preserve them and provide a place for
you to set things.”
Smart Storage Solutions
Strategic use of bins, drawers, and
hangers can elevate your organization
game. For Lewis, visual cohesion is
key. “For linen closets, placing bed sets,
towels, and beach towels in labeled bins
or organizers so they’re easy to identify
when you need to change them out
is key to maintaining order,” she says.
“Take it a step further and use matching
bins for a more cohesive look that will
lessen the visual clutter.”
Tonks also recommends a touch of
luxury in the details. “For your jewelry
and small accessories, line drawers in
your closet with black velvet. Not only
does this feel luxurious, but it gives you a
place to stay organized,” she says.
And don’t overlook the space you
already have. “For coat closets, utilize
the space underneath,” Lewis says. “Tall
boots, shoes, and baskets can live in the
space below, while seasonal or bulky
items can go up on the shelf. Finally, don’t
be afraid to use the door for storage.” She
recommends using an Elfa over the door
rack for its versatility.
Color Code
According to Brown, "One of the
best and easiest ways to organize
your closet is to color code it. When
clothes are grouped by color it saves
time looking for a piece, simplifies
outfit planning, and creates a visually
calming space." She recommends
emptying everything out then either
sorting by the colors of the rainbow;
or, for a sleeker, more minimalistic
look, hanging items from light to dark.
Tonks also loves the look and function
of a color-coded closet. “Color coding
your clothing will make it appear more
organized and give you a more finished
look, while making it easier to find what
you’re looking for based on what color
you’d like to wear that day,” she says.
Keep it Seasonal
As the seasons change, so should your
closet. “Keep items that you wear more
frequently close to the door of the closet
and at eye level,” Lewis says. “Anything
you don’t need to access on a regular
basis can be placed in labeled bins up
top to utilize your vertical space.”
For kids’ spaces, she suggests a
more practical approach. “Keeping
everything used on a daily basis
accessible is especially important to
foster independence,” she says. “Create
systems that work for your child and
set them up for success as they put
their own items back.”
And above all, patience pays off. “Do
what works best for you and your family
and be patient with the process,” Lewis
says. “It’s not always easy organizing a
closet, but the beautiful and functional
end result is worth it!”

6 Surprising Facts About Alzheimer’s Disease
Rehabilitation,
Resilience, and Renewal
SPECIAL AD SECTION
“Alone, you are
strong, but together,
you’ll be stronger
than ever!”
When her pulmonologist, Dr.
Ravi Chopra, first referred
Ruth Weeks for pulmonary
rehabilitation, her lung function
was just 19%. She arrived at
her evaluation appointment at
Marshall’s Placerville Pulmonary
Rehabilitation facility on October
26, 2024, in a wheelchair, unable
to walk or drive.
Ruth was determined to be able to
exercise to qualify for the double
lung transplant she was told she
needed. At the time, she did not
qualify for the life-saving procedure
because of her weight. With the
support of family and her medical
teams at Marshall and Stanford
Hospital, she persevered and was
soon able to build up her stamina,
using the rehabilitation clinic’s
NuStep exercise equipment for up
to 40 minutes without stopping.
Session after session, Ruth
increased her stamina as she
worked toward a goal of getting
out of the wheelchair and
reclaiming her independence. With
work, she was ultimately able to
walk more and even drive herself
to appointments.
On March 4, 2025 – just 129 days
after her pulmonary rehabilitation
evaluation – the call from Stanford
came; her new lungs were ready
for transplant. She was packed
and ready, but in a cruel twist,
when the donated lungs arrived
at Stanford, the transplant team
determined they were not up to
standard. Ruth left disappointed
but not discouraged.
The delay was only a matter of
days. Ruth received a successful
double lung transplant on March 8
at Stanford Hospital with her family
beside her. Following the surgery,
Ruth was relying on a ventilator
to breathe and was expected to
be unconscious for three weeks.
After only nine days, however, she
was able to leave the hospital. Her
resilience and the support of her
care network had paid off.
“It took about three days to adjust
to my new lungs once I was taken
off the ventilator,” Ruth said. “But
very quickly, I felt self-sufficient.
Talk about a breath of fresh air!”
Ruth returned to Marshall to
continue her rehabilitation, and
her lung function increased
to 80%. Just months after her
transplant, Ruth was able to climb
the 160 feet of stairs at the bluffto-beach
access point to Seal Cove
beach. She recently went on her
first camping trip in 12 years.
Ruth is especially grateful to her
daughter-in-law Georgia, who
was by her side throughout the
entire journey, and whose support
helped make everything seem
possible. She is looking forward
to enjoying her family, including
a 15th grandchild, and to getting
out and living the active lifestyle
her network of family and medical
partners has helped her achieve.

6 Surprising Facts
About Alzheimer’s
Disease
Here is some lesser-known
information about this
increasingly common condition.
When most people think of Alzheimer’s
disease, memory loss is the first thing
that comes to mind. But although
it’s true that forgetfulness is a major
symptom, there’s much more to this
condition than simply misplacing keys or
forgetting names.
Alzheimer’s affects the brain in many
different ways, and new research
continues to uncover surprising details
about how it starts, how it progresses,
and what might increase or lower your
risk. Understanding these lesser-known
facts can help you spot early warning
signs, support loved ones, and even
make lifestyle changes that may protect
your brain.
Here are six surprising things about
Alzheimer’s that may change the way
you think about this disease:
1. Alzheimer’s doesn’t always start
with memory loss. Early symptoms
can sometimes show up in areas other
than memory. Changes in language,
vision, or decision-making can
appear first. A person might struggle
to find the right words, misjudge
distances, or make choices that seem
out of character. These non-memory
symptoms are often overlooked but can
serve as early warning signs.
2. Sleep plays a bigger role than you
think. Getting good sleep isn’t just
about feeling rested. It helps the brain
clear away harmful proteins that are
linked to Alzheimer’s. Even one night
of poor sleep can increase the levels of
these proteins. Over time, missing out
on deep, restorative sleep may raise the
risk of developing the disease.
3. Misdiagnosis happens more than
you’d expect. Because symptoms
overlap with other conditions like
depression or vitamin deficiencies,
Alzheimer’s is sometimes mistaken for
something else. In fact, research shows
that as many as one in four diagnoses
may be incorrect. Getting a second
opinion from a specialist can help
ensure the right diagnosis and care.
4. Alzheimer’s can strike younger
people. Although it’s much more
common in people over 65, Alzheimer’s
can appear in people as young as their
40s or 50s. This is called early-onset
Alzheimer’s, and while it’s rare, it can
be especially challenging because
symptoms may be dismissed as stress
or other issues.
5. Women are at higher risk than
men. Almost two-thirds of Americans
living with Alzheimer’s are women.
Part of this is because women tend
to live longer, but researchers believe

Books Into the Exam Room to Boost
Childhood Health and Literacy
Thanks to generous grants from
Arata Brothers Trust and the Marshall
Foundation for Community Health,
Marshall Pediatrics is launching
an innovative program to promote
health literacy and underscore the
importance of reading among parents
of infants and young children.
In June 2025, Marshall Pediatrics
became a program site of Reach Out
and Read (ROAR), a transformative
nationwide program designed to
intertwine literacy with healthcare by
integrating book sharing and reading
aloud into pediatric care. Through
this program, at yearly check-ups and
kindergarten screenings, Marshall
pediatric providers will discuss with
parents the difference that reading
aloud to their children can make in
their development. Children will then
be given the opportunity to select a
free, age-appropriate book from the
clinic’s library shelf. Marshall’s goal is
to distribute 5,000 books annually.
“Something as simple as a book can
be one of the most important things
I give to a parent,” said Dr. Courtney
LaCaze-Adams, pediatrician and lead
for the ROAR initiative at Marshall.
“With approximately 80% of a
child’s brain development occurring
by the age of 3, early exposure to
reading is pivotal in maximizing
a child’s developmental potential.
Reading aloud improves language
development, increases listening
skills, grows curiosity, and strengthens
families.”
Since the June selection, staff have
been trained, and books have been
purchased. The hope is that the
program can expand throughout
Marshall and its family medicine
clinics in El Dorado Hills and
Georgetown’s Divide Wellness Center.
Focusing on children aged 0-5
years, ROAR leverages the trusted
relationship between medical
providers and families to foster a
culture of reading at home, critical for
early brain development and future
academic success. This initiative is
not just about distributing books;
it is about educating caregivers on
the significance of reading aloud
and its profound impact on a child’s
developmental trajectory.
Marshall is only the second ROAR
site in El Dorado County. With more
than 3,700 patients between 0 and 5
years old in 2024, and an anticipated
increase in well-child visits, Marshall
is poised to implement ROAR to
benefit our region’s youngest and
most impressionable residents.

How Diabetes
Affects Your Heart
If you have diabetes, it can
increase your risk of heart-related
issues, but these tips can help.
It’s no secret that managing blood sugar
levels is a key part of staying healthier
when you have diabetes. But do you
know why keeping blood sugar under
control is so important? High blood
sugar can take a toll on many parts of
the body over time, especially the heart.
In fact, people with diabetes are at a
much higher risk for heart disease and
stroke than those without the condition.
The connection between diabetes and
heart health may not seem obvious,
but understanding it can help you
make choices that protect your heart
for years to come. Here is some
insight into how diabetes can affect
your heart, as well as what you can do
to keep your heart healthier.
How Diabetes Affects Your Heart
Diabetes creates changes in your
blood vessels and circulation that may
result in:
• Blood vessel damage. High blood
sugar can injure the lining of the large
blood vessels that provide circulation
to your heart and brain. Over time,
they can become stiff or narrowed,
which makes it harder for blood to
flow freely. This increases the risk of
heart attacks and strokes.
• Weakened heart muscle. Diabetes
also causes narrowing of the small
blood vessels going directly to the heart
muscle, making it harder for the heart
to pump blood effectively. This can
lead to heart failure, which may cause
fatigue, swelling, and shortness of
breath.
• Other health issues. People with
diabetes often also have high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, or obesity.
Each of these conditions adds strain
to the heart and speeds up damage.
Because diabetes can damage nerves,
some people don’t feel classic warning
signs of heart trouble, such as chest
pain. That means heart disease may
be more advanced by the time it’s
discovered.
Steps You Can Take to Protect
Your Heart
The good news is that although
diabetes raises your risk of developing
cardiovascular issues, there’s a lot you
can do to protect your heart. Small daily
habits make a big difference, and these
tips can help:
• Keep blood sugar in range.
Monitoring your levels, following
your care plan, and taking
medications as prescribed all help
prevent damage to your blood vessels.
• See your doctor regularly. Routine
visits give your care team a chance
to check your blood pressure,
cholesterol, and kidney health and
run tests to spot heart problems early.
• Eat with your heart in mind. Fill
your plate with fruits, vegetables,
whole grains, lean proteins, and
healthy fats. Cutting back on
processed foods and sugary drinks
helps too.
• Stay active. Moving your body helps
in many ways. It improves how you
use insulin, lowers blood pressure,
helps control weight, and boosts
overall heart health. Even a daily walk
counts.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Losing
even a small amount of weight can
improve blood pressure, cholesterol,
and blood sugar levels, all of which
lighten the load on your heart.
• Quit smoking. Smoking damages
blood vessels and speeds up heart
disease. Quitting is one of the best

A Comeback
Story With
Heart
But considering it was less than six
months after Patty’s open-heart surgery,
it was quite an accomplishment!
Patty is an avid cyclist, something she
and her husband have shared since they
met. Parents to six and grandparents to 11,
they rode their birthday and anniversary
years in miles each year. At 57, she started
running because her daughter, Emily,
was training for the CIM and Patty didn’t
want her to run alone. A new passion
was born.
In 2024, Patty was training for
Sacramento’s Shamrock’n Half
Marathon when she underwent a heart
catheterization. The procedure revealed
that although her arteries were clean,
Patty had severe aortic stenosis, a
condition where the valve that controls
blood flow from the heart to the body
becomes narrowed. In March 2025, Patty
had open-heart aortic valve surgery.
Patty wanted her active lifestyle back. Her
doctor was hesitant to refer her to cardiac
rehabilitation because she was such an
accomplished athlete and so, surely, she
could do the work on her own. Patty’s
surgeon and her running coach, however,
strongly encouraged her to enroll in
Marshall’s cardiac rehabilitation program.
SPECIAL AD SECTION
On September 13, 2025, Patty Vander
Dussen completed the El Dorado Hills
Gold Country Run. Completing a local “fun
run” might not seem like a tremendous
accomplishment for someone who has
participated in the California International
Marathon (CIM), the Boston Marathon, the
American River 50 Mile Endurance Run,
the Kauai Half Marathon, and a 100K 24-
hour run in San Francisco (she stopped at
62.33 miles – her age at the time), among
countless others.
Marshall’s Pritikin Intensive Cardiac
Rehabilitation has three core pillars:
exercise, nutrition, and a healthy
mindset. For some, adopting a healthy
mindset means establishing new active,
healthy habits. For Patty, however, it
6 | FOR YOUR HEALTH | www.marshallmedical.org
meant slowing down to allow her heart and her chest
incision time to fully heal and recover. Marshall’s cardiac
rehabilitation tailors its program to fit the needs of each
patient, and Patty credits the team with teaching her to
pace herself during her recovery.
“Honestly, cardiac rehab saved me from myself mentally
as well as physically,” Patty said. “I was feeling pretty
down about staying home, hurting, not working, and
doing my regular routine. It was a very emotional time
for me. With the help of a heart monitor and nurses
and qualified medical staff watching me, I knew I was
in a safe place to push myself and see what I could do.
I am forever grateful for this team who lovingly cared
for each one of us in class … all of us on our own fitness
journeys. Through cardiac rehab, I am stronger mentally,
emotionally, and physically. I have an insatiable need to
be strong, and these classes, this amazing team, and the
new friends I have met through this process gave me an
excellent start to getting my strength back.”
...story continued from page 3
there may also be biological and hormonal reasons that
increase women’s risk compared with men.
6. Many people die with Alzheimer’s, but not
necessarily from Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is one of
the top causes of death among older adults, but it isn’t
always listed as the direct cause. That’s because people
with Alzheimer’s often develop other health problems
along the way. On average, someone may live four to
eight years after diagnosis, although some live much
longer.
Today, more than 7 million Americans over 65 live with
Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to nearly double
by 2060. As people live longer, this complex disease is
becoming more common, and the more we understand
about this condition, the better prepared we are to face it
and support those affected.
...story continued from page 5
things you can do for your heart and overall health.
• Manage stress. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure and
make healthy habits harder to follow. Find ways to relax,
such as deep breathing, meditation, or talking with friends.
Diabetes may increase your risk of heart problems, but by
understanding the connection and taking steps to manage
your health, you can help keep your heart stronger. Focus on
what you can control, such as blood sugar management, diet,
activity, and stress reduction, and partner with your doctor to
stay on track. Small choices add up, and each step you take is
a step toward a healthier heart now and in the future.
Healing
Garden
Dedication
Honors Legacy
of Janet
Nachtman
This fall, Marshall hosted a special celebration to honor the
completion of the Janet Nachtman Cancer Healing Garden
at the Marshall Cancer Center, a UC Davis Health affiliate.
What was once a bare dirt field has been transformed into a
serene and beautiful garden, the result of years of planning,
planting, and a true community effort.
Kat Olah, Marshall Infusion Center charge nurse, said, “This
garden brings peace and comfort to our patients and their
families. It symbolizes hope and healing, giving patients a
sense of calm during some of the most challenging times of
their lives.”
The Healing Garden, made possible through countless
volunteer hours and the generosity of donors through the
Marshall Foundation for Community Health, honors Janet
Nachtman, a longtime El Dorado County resident and wife
of former Marshall CEO Frank Nachtman. Janet passed
away from cancer in 2003. Her vision and passion to find
a better pathway for cancer patients laid the foundation
for the Cancer Center itself. The Healing Garden continues
her legacy by offering patients undergoing transfusion and
chemotherapy a therapeutic space to view and enjoy.

Kiku
Japanese
Cuisine

RYAN MARTINEZ

More than once,
I had to close my
eyes to fully absorb
the beauty of what
I was tasting—no
sauces, no spices,
just the essence of
the ocean itself.
In traditional Japanese kitchens,
chefs spend years mastering
the most mundane of tasks before
becoming an expert sushi chef, and
the journey often begins with the
simplest of ingredients: rice.
Chef Kong of Kiku Japanese
Cuisine is no exception. His passion
didn’t begin with cooking itself, but
rather with witnessing the mastery of
his teacher—the precision, artistry, and
reverence behind every piece of sushi.
Determined to achieve that same level
of perfection and one day open his own
sushi restaurant, he dedicated an entire
year solely to making rice. Unpaid
and undeterred by the monotony,
he worked tirelessly to perfect it—
achieving just the right balance of
flavor, texture, and stickiness—before
finally advancing to work alongside his
mentor in San Francisco.
Now, Chef Kong’s vision has come
to life. Kiku serves as a sanctuary for
anyone seeking traditional Japanese
sushi. While the menu includes some
familiar staples like rolls and bento
boxes, the focus is on a rotating selection
of the freshest, in-season fish available,
which means much of it changes weekly.

precision—the omakase experience
at Kiku is where true sushi fanatics
will find bliss.
Translated as “I leave it up
to you,” omakase entrusts the
chef to curate a meal at the
highest standard. At Kiku, expect
approximately 15 courses: four
delicacies, eight pieces of nigiri,
two pieces of sashimi, and a dessert.
I watched in awe as Chef Kong
demonstrated his impeccable knife
skills, slicing a cucumber into a
paper-thin sheet before beginning
to prepare a symphony of flavors.

it was a testament to tradition, precision,
creativity, and the divinity of raw flavor.
More than once, I had to close my eyes
to fully absorb the beauty of what I was

essence of the ocean itself.
My courses included everything
from oysters and shirako (bring a sense
of adventure with you!) to A5 wagyu
and caviar. The experience? Daring,
tantalizing, and transformative—a
glimpse into mastery and the tradition
it embodies.
My expecting wife, unable to indulge
in the omakase, was served a beautifully
plated sukiyaki nabe: a Japanese-style
hotpot dish featuring thinly sliced beef,
chicken, tofu, scallops, and seasonal
vegetables simmered in a sweet and
savory broth. And she certainly didn’t feel
deprived; in fact, this dish has officially
taken a top spot as one of her favorite
soups in the area.
It makes me happy
to see a growing
interest in omakase
and more traditional
Japanese cuisine,
and Kiku is quickly
gaining traction among food

Korean fried chicken chain Bonchon opened this
past May in El Dorado Hills, marking its fourth
location in the region. Talk about making an
impression! This is, hands down, some of the crunchiest, tastiest, freshest fried
chicken around: hand-battered, double-fried, and cooked to order—no sad,
warmed-with-a-heat-lamp vibes here. The chicken also comes hand-brushed with
your choice of flavor: soy garlic, spicy, Korean BBQ, yangnyeom (sweet & spicy), or
classic crunch. My friend and I stopped by for lunch and indulged in the Seoul
Sampler, which included two drumsticks and four wings (we opted for “classic
crunch,” which delivered a slight vinegary tang that had us hankering for more),
bulgogi fries (crispy seasoned fries topped with melty mozzarella, scallions,
tender bulgogi beef, and a drizzle of spicy mayo), pork potstickers (super crispy,
super good!), Korean street corn (a warm, gooey mix of grilled corn, Kewpie mayo,
mozzarella, Korean red chili flakes, and scallions), and refreshing coleslaw. This
spread was more than enough to satisfy the two of us, but we also added a

Sugar Rush
by SHARON PENNY
10BEST
CONFECTIONERIES
My top five confectionery-themed
songs—completely unsolicited, but highly
recommended—are: “Big Rock Candy
Mountain” by Harry McClintock, “Sugar,
Sugar” by The Archies, “Lollipop” by The
Chordettes, “Candy Girl” by New Edition,
and “Cherry Pie” by Warrant. If all this talk
of sweets has made you hungry, then mission
accomplished! Now, let’s dive into a list of the
best local spots for all your confectionery
cravings. Get ready for a sugar high with
these 10 (yes, 10) sweet destinations. Just
remember—pace yourself!
Annabelle’s Chocolate Lounge
Family-owned Annabelle’s Chocolate
Lounge (annabelleschocolate.com),
sited in enchanting El Dorado, focuses
on handmade dark chocolates,
including truffles, caramels, carmallows,
buttercreams, bark, turtles, dipped
candied fruit, and even sugar-free
options. Their cozy, rustic “lounge” also
includes a wine bar with local vinos—
the perfect chocolate pairing (!)—so
you can stay, sip, and relax a while.
TRY THIS: Cayenne & Cinnamon
Dark Chocolate Truffle (made onsite
daily, this gourmet, preservative- and
wax-free treat is equal parts sweet
and spicy).
Snooks Candies & Chocolate
Factory (snookscandies.com) has
been operating since 1963, and
to the best of our knowledge,
they’ve never turned a child into a
blueberry. (Your move, Wonka.) Drop
by their beloved brick and mortar
in Historic Folsom and indulge in
tasty bestsellers: honeycomb candy,
peanut brittle, English toffee, chewy
caramels, salted caramels, supersmooth
fudge, beautiful truffles, and
even Gunther’s ice cream. Satisfy
all your sugar cravings at once, all
under one roof.
TRY THIS: Dark Chocolate
Honeycomb (a light, crunchy seafoam
center of delicious handmade
honeycomb covered in smooth dark
chocolate).
Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates
(gingerelizabeth.com), with locations
in Folsom and Sacramento,
specializes in exquisite handmade
chocolates, macarons, ice cream, and
to-die-for hot chocolate (it took the
top spot on Yelp’s 2022 “Best Hot
Chocolate in the U.S.” list!). Drop by
one of their lovely storefronts and
swoon over their heavenly sweets!
TRY THIS: Almond Rocher Frozen
Macaron Sandwich (Alison’s
Organics almond praline frozen
custard with a fudge sauce swirl
between macaron cookies dipped in
dark chocolate).
Snooks Candies & Chocolate Factory
Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates
El Dorado Hills-based Crack’d Toffee Company
(crackdtoffee.com) sells their award-winning, artisanal, smallbatch
English toffee online and at Dry Diggings Distillery and
Nibbler’s Popcorn Co. Expect semi-sweet, dark chocolate,
white chocolate, distilled bourbon, premium dark roast, and
vegan dark; plus, toffee popcorn! If you love old-fashioned
English toffee, Crack’d is a mouthwatering must-try.
TRY THIS: Distill’d Bourbon Toffee (“black label” toffee that
combines extra-dark chocolate with Engine 49 Barrel Strength
Straight Bourbon Whiskey).
Roseville-based online business Choco De Bon (chocodebon.
com) specializes in beautiful, handcrafted luxury chocolates:
choose from oh-so-smooth Dubai chocolate bars or filled
chocolate bonbons with divine fillings like peanut praline,
molten caramel, toasted hazelnut, and pistachio. Order and

TRY THIS: Dubai Bar (made with couverture
milk chocolate and filled with crunchy
knafeh and pistachio praline).
Apple Hill’s Fudge Factory Farm
(fudgefactoryfarm.com) is a thirdgeneration,
family-run farm making
incredible confectionery, as well as
homegrown apples, berries, and walnuts.
There are 75 fudge flavors, 27 kinds of
candy-coated apples, plus peanut brittle,
English toffee, chocolates, caramel corn, hot
fudge and caramel ice cream sundaes, pies,

jams, jellies, and more!
TRY THIS: Dark Chocolate Raspberry Swirl
Fudge (raspberry fudge made from Fudge
Factory’s own organic-grown raspberries,
swirled with homemade dark chocolate
fudge).
Secret’s out: Shorty’s Gelato & Bakery
(shortysgelatoandbakery.com) in Placerville
also specializes in delicious handmade
chocolates—from dipped candied fruit and
rocky road and toffee smore’s, to Dubai
chocolate, caramels, filled chocolates,
chocolate bars, and even caramel chocolate
apples. So many chocolates, so little time!
And they’ve got countless killer bakery
items, gelato, and hot chocolate, too. Drop
by for a fix of…well, everything!
As her business name hints, Becki DeKoning
Tyner—founder of The Chocolate Architect
(chocolatearchitect.com)—really is a licensed
architect—who also has a passion for chocolate
design. From her Folsom-based kitchen, she
crafts melt-in-your-mouth confections in an array
of flavors and styles, each as artfully balanced as
a well-built structure. Silky smooth and utterly
irresistible, her creations make the perfect wine
(or beer!) pairing, special-occasion indulgence,
or just-because treat. Local pick-up and delivery
are available, as is nationwide shipping, and you
can often find the goods at community and/or
winery events.
TRY THIS: Chocolate Silk (fresh, velvety
European-style ganache made with no added
preservatives, trans fats, or edible wax; available
in more than 80 varieties).
Le Grand Confectionary
(legrandconfectionary.com) began making
delectable chocolate truffles in 1982; while
their Lyon Village location closed in 2024, their
truffles live on—thanks to a partnership with
Ticket Chocolate (ticketchocolate.com) in
Loomis! Shop online and savor their handcrafted
goodies (hot chocolate sticks, gourmet
marshmallows, chocolate bars, and truffles
included) to your heart—and stomach’s—content.
TRY THIS: Cherry Cheesecake Truffle (white
chocolate ganache with just a touch of cherry and
a covering of impossibly smooth milk chocolate).
Rising Simplicity (risingsimplicity.com) offers
online ordering for local pickup in Roseville,
Rocklin, Lincoln, Granite Bay, and surrounding
communities. The talented baker behind the
treats trained at Le Cordon Bleu, and she really
does it all—from classic cookies, brownies,
scones, and muffins, to gourmet sweets like dark
chocolate sea salt caramels, cake pops, granola,
nuts, and more.
TRY THIS: Brookie Cookie (chocolate
chip on one side and a delicious brownie
flavor on the other, all topped with a dark
chocolate drizzle).

Congrats to this month’s
nonprofit of the month:
HART OF
FOLSOM
VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT:
Denise Gregorini
What inspired you to volunteer for
HART of Folsom?
Seeing the unhoused on our streets.
Everyone deserves a safe place to live—it’s
a basic human right. Knowing I can make a
difference, even in a small way, is my ‘why’.
What do your volunteer duties entail?
I currently assist with fundraising for
HART’s two annual events—soliciting for
donations, whether it’s a sweet treat for
the dessert raffle in May or for products,
art, and services for the Fall Festival. Every
day, I’m in awe of the generosity from our
local businesses.
Is there training required?
Fundraising is like sales, which I do believe
can be taught, but is not required. If you
love people and are passionate about
why you’re asking for a donation, the
request tends to come naturally. I truly
enjoy meeting local business owners, retail
clerks, and office staff who appreciate
HART’s mission. For those who aren’t
comfortable knocking on doors, there are
plenty of other ways to serve—no matter
your skillset.
What’s the time commitment?
It’s completely flexible. Volunteers can
contribute as much or as little as they’d
like; some dedicate countless hours and
others step up as needed for specific tasks
or on event days. HART is grateful for any
time or support people can offer.
HART of Folsom’s primary goal is
to walk alongside the unhoused
in our community, guiding
them toward self-sufficiency
and lasting independence. The
small but mighty nonprofit
offers transitional housing and
assistance with a variety of other
needs. Every winter, during the
coldest months, HART hosts a
shelter, which often serves as a
vital stepping stone for clients
to transition off the streets and
into essential programs.
For more information, including
ways you can donate or
volunteer, visit hartoffolsom.org.
What’s been the best day of
volunteering so far?
The events! Months of preparation come
to fruition, spirits are high, and love is in
the air. We’re surrounded by smart, kind,
and generous people, and HART's events
truly celebrate that.
What’s one of the biggest challenges?
Seeing that the need is so great can
be overwhelming, but lives are being
transformed, which is what I remain
focused on.
