When you hear the words
Memorial Day weekend,
what comes to mind? The
offi cial start of summer?
Time at the pool or beach
with friends and family?
The smell of burgers and
steaks on the grill? Or is it a
quiet time to stop, pause and
refl ect on the thousands of
American service men and
women who, whether they
volunteered or were drafted,
swore an oath to support
and defend our nation?
President Abraham Lincoln
observed at Gettysburg, “that from these honored dead we
take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the
last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that
these dead shall not have died in vain.”
Sadly, the true meaning of Memorial Day seems to get lost
amidst the hustle and bustle of life today. We are overloaded
by information in our high-tech society. We’re so busy texting,
tweeting and posting pictures from our weekend escape to
Facebook – while trying to drive or engage in conversation
with our family – that we often forget there are times when
we need to unplug and disconnect from these distractions. We
need time to focus on what’s truly important. We need time to
pause, refl ect and remember.
Did you know that in December 2000, Congress passed
the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution that
asks on Memorial Day for all Americans at 3 p.m. local
By Jewell Hicks
502nd Air Base Wing Safety chief
Memorial Day weekend is an opportunity
for us to honor the brave men and
women who have made the ultimate
sacrifi ce for our freedom. It also marks
the beginning of the Critical Days of
Summer, which continues through Labor
Day weekend.
According to Air Force Safety Center
offi cials, the next 15 weeks have historically
been a period of increased off-duty
activities and risk-taking that often result
in an increased number of injuries
and fatalities.
As a result, safety centers across the
Department of Defense launch campaigns
during Memorial Day weekend to
COMMENTARY
Memorial Day: Time to pause, refl ect, remember
increase safety awareness and promote
risk management during this critical
period.
During the Critical Days of Summer
last year, the Air Force experienced 18
fatalities. Bringing that closer to home,
18 families lost loved ones and their
lives will never be the same.
We often seem to think these tragedies
happen only to other people.
The reality is if you could ask families
"Take the time to pause, refl ect and
remember the families of the fallen.
And fi nally, take the time in that
moment of silence and refl ection to
thank them for their selfl ess service
and sacrifi ce."
time “to voluntarily and informally observe in their own
way a Moment of Remembrance and Respect, pausing
from whatever they are doing, for a moment of silence
or listening to Taps?” In the course of a 72- or 96-hour
weekend, setting aside a few minutes to remember and
honor the fallen is the least we can do to honor and
respect these American sons and daughters.
In the past 13 months, Joint Base San Antonio supported
dignifi ed transfer ceremonies for nine fallen warriors from the
South Texas area, including Army 1st Lt. Clovis Ray, Marine
Lance Cpl. Benjamin Schmidt, Navy Seabee Trevor Stanley
and Air Force Maj. Jeff Ausborn.
I encourage all of us to spend time this weekend – even if it
is only that moment of refl ection on Monday at 3 p.m – remembering
our family members, wingmen, battle buddies and
all of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who’ve made
that ultimate sacrifi ce in the defense of our nation.
Take the time to pause, refl ect and remember the families
of the fallen. And fi nally, take the time in that moment of
silence and refl ection to thank them for their selfl ess service
and sacrifi ce.
who’ve lost a loved one, I’m sure their
story would be quite different.
It is unfortunate but in many fatal circumstances,
our military members lost
their lives as a result of poor decisions.
Even worse, there were several
instances where a wingman or battle
buddy could have intervened and prevented
the impending disaster, but they
did not step up.
Summer program provides reading fun
By Alex Salinas
Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Public Affairs
The Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph
Library got summer started May 18 in
a tasty fashion with “Reading is so Delicious!”
– the 2012 Summer Reading Program’s
theme. In attendance were Col.
Scott Peel, 902nd Mission Support Group
commander, and guest speaker Terrye
Heagerty, 902nd Force Support Squadron
services director.
The program encourages children
and young adults to read as many
books as they can during the summer
break, which presents a unique challenge,
Rudy Rodela, 902nd FSS supervising
librarian, said.
“There can be a lull in students’ summer
breaks when they aren’t required
to read anything,” Rodela said. “This is
when we’d like them to read as much
as possible.”
Rodela believes the driving force to
break the lull is parents.
“They are the ones who bring the kids
into the library,” he said. “Parents help
prevent backslides with their kids’ reading
during the summer months, when
they encourage them.
“Our key demographic is younger
children – once they get into the habit
of reading regularly and get the feel for
the library, they can become lifelong fre-
quenters of libraries.”
When children become library patrons,
their parents tend to become more involved
and interested in what the library
offers to them, Rodela said.
The dependence between children and
their parents becomes important to summer
reading programs such as the one
offered at Randolph, he said.
The theme for this year’s program
was selected for libraries across the
Department of Defense and encompasses
how everyone should approach
reading and learning from books, Gail
Trevino, 902nd FSS programming librarian,
said.
“Reading books is such an important
activity,” she said. “It keeps you busy and
engaged. You could learn something new
every time you read.”
This doesn’t only happen by becoming
engrossed in a book’s plot; frequent readers
become better readers by expanding
their vocabulary, Trevino said.
“Part of reading is learning ‘delicious’
new words, which is something we’ll
stress in this year’s campaign,” she said.
The program is open to children of
all ages, including high school-aged children,
who are dependents of Department
of Defense ID cardholders. Signup for the
program is ongoing at the base library,
Bldg. 598, and is free.
A large part of the Summer Reading
By Airman 1st Class Lincoln Korver
Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Public Affairs
Program at Randolph is contests geared
to engage participants of all ages.
A few of the contests include a
poetry contest and a bookmark design
contest with various prizes contestants
can earn. High schoolers
in grades 9 through 12 will have a
chance to win a Barnes & Noble Nook
(electronic book reader) if they register
for a book review contest, where
they will be required to read five out
of eight books on a reading list and
submit book reviews.
With school nearly out of session and summer arriving
quickly, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph’s 902nd
Force Support Squadron is proud to announce the
opening of the two base pools.
The Center Pool at the Parr Club, located at Bldg.
502, will be open from May 26 to Sept. 5. The South
Pool, located at Bldg. 980, adjacent to Chapel 2 on H
Street, will be open from June 4 to Aug. 19.
“The pools will be open to all ID cardholders,” Bonnie
Runge, Community Services flight chief, said.
The South Pool offers swim lessons, lap swimming,
day camp through the youth center and private pool
parties, she said. The Center Pool's activities include
aerobics classes and open recreational swims.
In order to hold the pool programs to the
highest standard, its management makes sure to
stress safety for both swimmers and staff, Runge
said. All of the lifeguards are fully certified and
know the proper safety protocol.
Janet Trevino, 902nd Force Support Squadron librarian, reads a story to children from the Joint
Base San Antonio-Randolph Child Development Center at the Randolph library May 18.
For parents, there will also be opportunity
to swap recipes with each other,
which ties in to this year’s campaign
theme, Trevino said.
Prizes will be awarded Wednesdays
beginning May 30 through July 18 and
a finale party is scheduled for July 28.
Registration for contests began Wednesday
and all due dates will be June 28.
Thirty-eight children signed up during
the kickoff, Trevino said, and she expects
more than 100 participants to join this
year’s summer reading program.
Runge also addressed comments made last year
by pool-goers on seeing lifeguards sitting down
and relaxing by the side of the pool. She explained
that those lifeguards are on their break. Due to
their long hours in the sun, rest is a necessity to
employees, especially when their job is to ensure
the safety of other people. There are rules and
regulations for the ratio of swimmers to lifeguards
on deck, and those will always be met, she said.
“For one thing, I think it’s a great opportunity
for families to get together and enjoy swimming,”
Runge said. “It’s a safe environment; all of our lifeguards
are completely certified; it’s easy for base
residents; it’s inexpensive compared to downtown
community pools; and it has a nice military community
environment.”
“The pools are a great family-friendly place to relax,
play and cool off during the hot Texas summer
months,” Ashley Murphy, 902nd FSS staff member,
said. “The location is convenient and the admission
is inexpensive, so they are a top choice for military
families in the area.”

Thirteen of the 18 fatalities last
summer involved automobiles and
motorcycles. The other fi ve deaths
were by sports, recreational and
other preventable fatalities.
It is not a surprise that alcohol,
speed, fatigue, lack of profi ciency and
personal risk management were all
contributing factors in most of these
instances.
Here are some simple but effective
reminders that could help keep you
from becoming a statistic during the
Critical Days of Summer:
• Don’t talk on a cellphone while
driving unless using a hands-free device.
• Buckle up. It’s the law and it’s
proven that seatbelts save lives.
• Be aware of surroundings and anticipate
the unexpected.
• Don’t speed to arrive early – it’s
better to arrive late than not at all.
• Don’t drink and drive – the odds
are against you.
We encourage everyone to go out and
have a good time this summer, doing
everything possible to ensure that the
good time does not turn into a preventable
tragic mishap.
Law enforcement members
honor fallen police offi cers
Fifty years ago, President John
F. Kennedy signed a proclamation
designating May 15 as Peace Offi
cers Memorial Day and the week
around it as National Police Week.
Every year, thousands of police
offi cers around the world participate
in events created to honor
those who have given the ultimate
sacrifi ce.
Last week, Joint Base San Antonio
security forces members
and military police offi cers came
together and joined local police
services to honor their comrades
who have perished.
From there, participants completed
a 5K walk and run that
led into their attendance of the
local police department’s memorial
services and candlelight
ceremonies.
Police officers perform many
tasks in their job duties that expose
them to great potential for
harm.
National Police Week is an observance
during which those who
risk their lives can be recognized
and honored.
What more could a high school coach
ask for than to go to the state championship,
compete against the top eight schools
in the state and then walk away with a
gold medal?
That’s exactly what Stacy Bessire, Randolph
High School Lady Ro-Hawks head
track coach, got to do May 11 at the University
Interscholastic League state track
meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium, University
of Texas at Austin.
“Going into the final race, we were 10
points behind,” Bessire said. “Our 4x400
relay had to win the race to win the
state championship, but I didn’t stress
that to them. Sometimes when you do
that, the team can get real nervous instead
of just relaxing, running and doing
what they need to do.”
The funny thing was that the kids
didn’t know, she said. When they raced,
they raced because they wanted the gold
medal.
“My senior who was the last leg ran a
phenomenal 55.74; that brought us from
fifth place to winning it,” Bessire said. “She
said it wasn’t about winning the championship,
although that was a plus; she said
it was her goal for everyone to go home
with a gold medal. I thought that was really
neat for her to say that.”
Along with the 4x400 relay, the Lady Ro-
Hawks also took first place in the 4x200
relay race.
The female track team hadn’t won a
state title since their three-year winning
streak ended in 2008, she said.
“This was a big accomplishment for
them because coming in as freshmen, they
had never won a state title until their senior
year,” she said.
The team improved its relay times each
meet, Bessire said. She thought as long as
the team stayed consistent, they would be
fine. They ended up running their fastest
times at the state championship, managing
to knock two seconds off their 4x200
Lady Ro-Hawks bring home state title
“I didn’t know anything about the state title,
I didn’t know anything about the points
and I didn’t know where we stood.
I just went to run the race.”
Jasmine Waring
Randolph High School senior and Lady Ro-Hawks track team member
relay and three seconds off their 4x400
relay.
“I knew they had it in them,” she said.
“All year long I felt they weren’t being
pushed. I kept telling them, ‘you guys do
not know how talented you are because
you haven’t been pushed to your limits
yet.’ That just goes to show that when they
were at state, they were pushed and they
did their very best.”
The team knew that for a lot of them
it was going to be their last time running
together, Jasmine Waring, Randolph High
School senior, 4x200 and 4x400 relay team
member, said.
“I didn’t know anything about the state
title, I didn’t know anything about the
points and I didn’t know where we stood,”
she said. “I just went to run the race.”
