What to Do in Lefkada

The town of Lefkada is the perfect place to begin your

exploration. Stroll along the waterfront promenade

with its wooden bridge—the island’s trademark and

a beautiful backdrop for photos, especially at sunset.

Lose yourself in narrow alleyways lined with

blooming courtyards and colorful houses of rare

architectural charm, admire 17th- and 18th-century

churches, and let time flow at a pace that balances

history and everyday life.

No visit is complete without exploring the Castle of

Agia Mavra and then the museums in the historic

center: the Folklore Museum of Orfeas, the Archaeological

Museum, and of course, the Museum of

Angelos Sikelianos.

Just outside town lies the Monastery of Panagia

Faneromeni, patron saint of the island and beloved

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

by locals. The panoramic view from here is breathtaking,

while the tranquil courtyard shaded by

trees—home to small animals—invites moments

of peace and contemplation.

Venture into the mountain villages and you’ll

discover a very different rhythm. Stop in the main

village of Karya for a traditional Greek coffee in

the cool shade of centuries-old plane trees. Don’t

miss Exanthia, boasting one of the island’s most

impressive viewpoints. And if you want to feel as

though you’ve stepped into a time capsule, head

to Englouvi, a village seemingly untouched by

time, famous for its exceptional lentils.

A trip to Lefkada would not be complete without

a dip in its enchanting beaches. From the

world-renowned Porto Katsiki and the dramatic

Egremni to the cosmopolitan Kathisma,

each beach offers a unique experience. Turquoise

waters, golden-white sand, and imposing cliffs

create scenes of striking beauty. For something

quieter, the beaches near town are perfect for a

relaxed afternoon swim—even on foot. To enjoy

the coastline without the crowds, choose early

morning hours or sunset.

Lefkada’s gastronomy is a journey for the senses

in itself. Traditional recipes—sometimes simple,

sometimes more elaborate—carry within them

centuries of history and everyday wisdom.

From rustic tavernas in the mountain villages

to seaside eateries that set their tables right

by the water, choices abound. Here you will

savor fresh seafood alongside the local Vardea

wine, as well as regional specialties not easily

found elsewhere: the famous Englouvi lentils,

fragrant thyme honey, Lefkadian salami spiced

with garlic and whole peppercorns, or the traditional

rozoli liqueur infused with orange, citron,

and aromatic cinnamon.

Tips for Solo Travelling in Lefkada

• Lefkada is one of the safest destinations for solo travelers. You truly

have nothing to worry about: most locals, regardless of age, speak English,

and even if you meet someone who doesn’t, Lefkadians will surprise

you with their warmth and willingness to help.

• The islanders love their slow pace of life and never skip their midday

siesta. Don’t be surprised if many shops are closed during those hours.

Restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets remain open, but it’s worth

planning your schedule with the siesta in mind.

• If you don’t drive, it’s best to base yourself in Lefkada

Town or nearby areas, especially in spring and

autumn. During summer, local buses run frequently

to villages and beaches, but off-season timetables

are more limited. Alternatively, taxis are widely

available — a practical choice for destinations not

covered by public transport.

• It’s also a good idea to opt for bottled water

instead of tap water.

• Most importantly, as a solo traveler, embrace

your freedom to the fullest: wander through the

picturesque alleys, discover hidden corners, enjoy

peaceful walks along the beaches, and savor local flavors

at traditional tavernas — all at your own pace, without

compromise.

4 reasons why

you will fall in love

with Lefkada

Stroll Lefkadas’s small neighbourhoods

Start your saunter at the iconic wooden bridge, on the

coastal pedestrian street. Then weave your way through

the quaint alleys lined with centuries-old churches, traditional

Lefkadian residences and beautiful white-washed

yards. Don’t forget to visit the emblematic Santa Maura

Fort (Agia Mavra Castle) at the town’s entrance and your

pick of notable local museums including the Folklore

Museum of Orpheus, with objects from everyday life on

the island, the Archeological Museum of Lefkada with

artifacts dating from the early bronze age and the Angelos

Sikelianos Museum, where the unbridled spirit of one of

Greece’s most celebrated poets still holds court. When

you need a rest, grab a table at one of the adorable cafebars

and restaurants that dot the central market and side

streets and enjoy a refreshing drink and some delicious

local food.

Visit Lefkada’s dreamy beaches

The island is renowned for its west coast beaches,

Pefkoulia, Agios Nikitas, Milos, Kathisma, Egremni, Gialos

and, of course, Porto Katsiki. Some are cosmopolitan and

fully organised with beach bars and sun loungers. Others

are completely free, with deep blue waters and impressive

natural surroundings. Lefkada’s eastern coast is less

rugged and better protected from the prevailing summer

winds, making its beaches your best bet if it’s too breezy or you’re travelling

with young children. Three beaches close to the Old Town worth visiting are

Agios Ioannis, a favorite for surfers, as well as Kastro and Gyra, both reachable

by foot or bicycle. Finally, don’t miss the chance to see Lefkada’s southern

beaches: Vasiliki with its crystal clear waters, a windsurf enthusiast’s paradise

and tiny Agiofili. One thing’s for sure, no matter which beach you choose, you

will not want to leave!

Explore Lefkada’s alpine villages

Combine your beach adventures with trips to Lefkada’s picturesque mountain

villages where the island’s tradition and culture thrive to this day. Exanthia,

Karya and Egklouvi are three gems worth discovering. Explore their narrow

streets, admire the expertly crafted houses, traditional woodwork and flowerscented

gardens, enjoy the local cuisine and savor a Greek coffee in an oldschool

village kafeneio.

Discover amazing landscapes

Lefkada is the ideal destination for nature-lovers seeking pristine landscapes of

unparalleled beauty. So if you like a bit of adventure and enjoy wilderness treks,

get an early start and don’t forget to take a hat, water and your most comfortable

walking shoes. The Dimosari waterfalls, a monument of natural beauty, is

one of the island’s most popular hiking destinations. The waterfall spills into

a turquoise pool perfect for cooling off after your walk! Keep in mind that the

water level is higher in spring and lower during the summer months. Skaros

Forest is another enchanting destination where nature reveals its very essence

within a thick and orgiastic scenery of green and breathtaking views towards

the Prigiponisia islands.

Honeymoon

in Lefkada

20

Destination

LEFKADA

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

For newlywed couples who refuse to settle for the

ordinary and long for a destination where nature,

serenity, and emotion meet, Lefkada offers the perfect

backdrop for an unforgettable honeymoon. With

a remarkable rise in international travel searches

and a well-deserved place among the world’s top

honeymoon destinations, Lefkada is emerging as

the ultimate choice for those who want the start

of their shared life to be the opening chapter in a

love story they will cherish forever.

To enjoy the “island of poets” at its most romantic

and savour the charm Lefkada so generously

bestows on its visitors, avoid the August crowds.

June, as well as the period from late August to late

September, offers the ideal balance between mild

temperatures and true island tranquillity.

Dream Beaches and Mythic Sunsets

Lefkada is home to some of the most breathtaking

beaches in the world, offering the perfect romantic

backdrop for couples seeking peace and relaxation.

Porto Katsiki, the island’s star, lives up to every

expectation: its jewel-toned, crystal-clear waters

framed by towering chalk-white cliffs create a cinematic

setting, ideal for sunset gazing or quiet,

intimate vows exchanged just before the sun dips

below the horizon.

An Unforgettable Escape

Lefkada charms with breathtaking sunsets, intimate

seaside dining, and experiences that draw you closer

together.

For serene indulgence, surrender to a blissful massage

or elevate your well-being with a rejuvenating

yoga session. Wander hand-in-hand along guided

hikes through verdant landscapes, or explore

enchanting, emerald trails on an electric bike tour.

For the thrill-seekers, Lefkada is a playground of

excitement: glide through turquoise waters with

kayaking, waterskiing, or stand-up paddleboarding in

Nidri, feel the rush of jet skiing or dive into a vibrant

underwater world. Windsurfing and kitesurfing at

Vasiliki—celebrated across Europe for its perfect

winds—offer unforgettable moments, whether you

are a beginner or an expert.

At Egremni, the scenery grows even more captivating:

the sea stretches endlessly, merging with the sky, and

each dive into its turquoise waters becomes a ritual

of tenderness. For those seeking something quieter,

Lefkada’s lesser-known beaches, Avali, Megali Petra,

Afteli, Agiofylli, offer a sense of private paradise,

where the world feels paused.

Mylos Beach, located about 15 kilometers southwest

of the town, is a white-sand wonderland with

striking turquoise waters. It is the perfect place to

watch the dying embers of the sun on a warm summer

evening, wrapped in the magic of the moment.

Romantic spots beyond the beaches

Profitis Ilias

If you’re looking to capture the heart of that

special someone, look no further than Profitis

Ilias. From the top of this quintessential bluewhite

little church, you can enjoy one of the best

Lefkada views. Make sure that you arrive here

before sunset, to watch the explosion of colors

that takes place on the horizon. Pure magic!

Cape Lefkatas

The wonderful scenery of Cape Dukato aka cape

Lefkatas makes a superb setting for a romantic

getaway. In ancient times religious ceremonies

were held at Lefkatas in order to propitiate the

gods of the sea and to purify the city, at which

there were even human sacrifices. That little detail

shouldn’t prevent you from visiting Lefkatas when

the sun is beginning to set and the sky is covered

with vibrant blood-orange shades.

A romantic dinner under the Ionian sky

Lefkada offers an abundance of dining choices

to delight every couple during their honeymoon.

From intimate seaside tavernas to elegant restaurants

with sweeping views, the island presents

a multitude of options to suit all moods and

occasions. Whether you crave a cozy candlelit

ambiance, spectacular sunset vistas, or fresh

regional cuisine, you’ll find an array of enchanting

settings to elevate your romantic evenings.

The 6 Most Peaceful

Beaches of Lefkada

QUIET CORNERS WHERE LIGHT, WIND AND THE SEA SPEAK SOFTLY

24

Destination

LEFKADA

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

1. Agios Ioannis

Just minutes from Lefkada town, Agios Ioannis welcomes

you with lush, endless greenery and a landscape

that instantly captivates. Its crystalline waters

shift shades with the light — from aquamarine to

deep turquoise. Despite its proximity to town, the

beach maintains a rare sense of calm, even at the

height of the season. From midday onwards, the

wind takes center stage: shaping and stirring the

sea, raising waves that make this spot a favorite

among kitesurf enthusiasts.

The true reward comes as the sun dips lower: here,

sunsets are unobstructed, golden, and so naturally

stunning they need no Instagram filters.

2. Gyra

If you ask the locals where to spread your towel

for a quiet swim, most will point you toward

Gyra. After all, this is where the town’s residents

traditionally come for a refreshing dip, enjoying

both the beach’s proximity to Lefkada town and

its unmatched tranquility. Its name is no coincidence:

the beach “encircles” the lagoon in front

of the town, forming a natural loop that returns

to its starting point. For nature lovers, the route

is perfect for a walk, offering an intimate connection

with the landscape.

Its long, sandy stretch makes it ideal for families,

while visitors can choose between secluded

corners or organized spots with cafés, tavernas,

loungers, and natural shade. The water, crystalclear

and aquamarine, mirrors the Ionian light,

while in summer the dunes bloom with fragrant

sand lilies, a gentle reminder that here, nature

still leads the way.

Destination

LEFKADA 25

3. Kastro

Nestled just moments from Lefkada town, Kastro

Beach remains one of the island’s most peaceful

treasures, a place where time seems to pause. Families

come for the easy joy of swimming and laughter

under the sun, while early risers and locals savor

its quiet mornings before the midday glow. Despite

its closeness to the town, Kastro feels worlds away—

imbued with a gentle, nostalgic charm that captures

the essence of Lefkada’s slower rhythm. For

travelers seeking tranquility and authenticity, Kastro

stands as a timeless reminder of what summer by

the Ionian Sea should feel like.

4. Avali

For years, Avali has kept a loyal following, drawing

travelers in search of a quiet corner far

from August’s crowds. Nature here remains

untouched, the scenery radiating simplicity,

inviting moments of deep calm. Low-key and

unassuming, Avali feels as though it belongs to

another world, an exotic paradise on Lefkada’s

western coast, where you can recharge fully

before winter returns. And when the mood calls

for a little more, a small canteen nearby serves

cold beers, coffee, and light snacks, keeping alive

the beach’s authentic, laid-back character.

5. Nikiana

Nikiana is one of those places that make you relax

the moment you arrive. A quiet little village on

Lefkada’s eastern coast, it has everything you need.

Its sea is never rough. Calm and shallow, it’s perfect

for keeping children happily occupied by the

water’s edge while parents soak in the sun and the

peace. You won’t find loungers or umbrellas here,

but the trees along the shore do the job, offering

cool, natural shade. Cafés line the road above, ideal

for a late-afternoon coffee or drink, and parking is

simple. Time doesn’t matter here; you fall into the

rhythm of the place and, before you know it, you’ve

had the best summer “reset.”

6. Ammouso

At the southern tip of Lefkada, lies Ammouso,

unfolding like a whispered promise of serenity.

The beach, covered with white, coarse pebbles

that glisten under the sun, embraces waters of

crystalline clarity, sometimes turquoise, sometimes

emerald, depending on the light’s caress.

Half organized with loungers and umbrellas, half

left natural, Ammouso allows visitors to choose

between comfort or creating their own little summer

hideaway. Under the shade of trees, with the

cool breeze on your skin and salt still clinging to

it, time seems to stand still, perhaps the truest

luxury of summer.

The Castle of Agia Mavra

At the way in to Lefkada town, the fort of Agia Mavra stands proudly,

a model of fortification architecture of the Middle Ages, with a

central core in the shape of an irregular heptagon reinforced

at its seven corners with bastions and three external ramparts.

It protected the capital from the first decade of the fourteenth

century until 1684.

According to tradition the first rampart as built near the year 1300

by the Venetian ruler Giovanni Orsini, who was given Lefkada

as the dowry of his bride, the daughter of the Despot of Epirus

Nikiforos I.

Inside the fort ruins still stand of buildings from the days of

Venetian dominaton – barracks, ammunition stores, administrative

buildings, a hospital, dwellings – on which some work was

done during the British occupation. There is a lighthouse on the

small bastion of the NW side and Davis’s cenotaph, and on the

eastern is the church of Agia Mavra. The fort, the walled town and

the quarters on the outside took their name from this church.

Lefkada town today is the third capital of the island since the days of antiquity,

when it was ancient Nirikos, situated in the Kouloumos area and then medieval

Santa Mavra enclosed within the walls of the homonymous fortress.

In 1684 the island capital was transferred to its present location,

until then a small settlement of workers in Lefkada’s fishery and

salt pans. The choice of location was for defense purposes,

surrounded as it was by sea, providing the town with a

protective shield. Furthermore, the Venetian administration

whose seat was the fort, could more

easily exercise control over the town. When

the Venetians decided to establish the

capital where it is situated today,

they designed it on the model

of their own towns.

The layout of the town’s historical

center resembles a fishbone: the

central axis, the Agora or Pazari cuts

through in a north-south direction,

and plays an important role in the

conduct of daily life in Lefkada. The

side streets, perpendicular to the

Agora, are connected by debouching

into narrow streets running parallel

to the Agora.

Street blocks are formed in such a way

as to favour parallel lines in a northsouth

direction so as to expose the

town to the ventilating action of the

north winds for reasons of hygiene.

The street blocks are also favourable

for the creation of gardens round the

houses, which embellish the layout of

the town by making nooks of greenery

that look like a stage set.

Until World War II, the town limits extended

almost up to the church of Agios Minas.

The town grew from the end of the market

in recent times, to form the quarters of

Neapoli among others. Until the major

earthquake of 1948, in the neighbouring

area of Kouzounteli, other than a few country

coffee houses -facing Pefaneromeni

Avenue there was the refugee settlement of

the Greeks who sought shelter in Lefkada

Island in the aftermath of the Asia Minor

catastrophe of 1922.

It is thanks to the festival that significant artists have performed in Lefkada; the great Maria Callas, in

1964, made an unscheduled appearance in the town’s square, in what was to be her last live performance

in Greece.

Provincial Marriage Feast of Karya

It takes place every summer in Karya. The first day is the day of the presentation of all the customs that

are preceding the mystery. It is a series of preparations concerning the dowry of the bride, the house,

her costume and everything needed for the mystery and revelry.

Lentil Festival at Englouvi

Every August the famous Lentil Festival takes

place at the yard of Agios Donatos church. The

festival is dedicated to the harvest of the new

lentil crop. The women of the village cook in large

caldrons the famous lentils of Englouvi and offer

it to the participants. The feast finishes with a

big traditional festival.

Varkarola

A traditional Ionian custom that is reenacted every

August. A small boat decorated with lanterns sails

across the canal of the western beach while the

White sands and sunny shores

Best beaches

in Lefkada for 2026

Here’s our pick of the top 8 beaches you need

to visit this summer in Lefkada

Porto Katsiki

One of Greece’s most iconic and most photographed beaches, Porto Katsiki will captivate you from

the moment it comes into view. Sheer cliffs rise majestically skyward from the white pebble beach

and its crystalline waters. The iridescent sea seems an impressionistic masterpiece as it flickers from

54

Destination

LEFKADA

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

deep blue to bright turquoise while the entire scene can only be described as breathtaking. Swimming

here is without a doubt the experience of a lifetime. Keep in mind that the waters deepen abruptly.

Although reaching the beach requires descending quite a few stairs, you’ll be amply rewarded. If you’d

rather make an easier approach, you can hire a boat or visit the beach on a day cruise.

Destination

LEFKADA 55

Pefkoulia

Embraced by a lush pine forest that stretches

to the coast, Pefkoulia is the lesser-known

gem of Lefkada’s west coast. Bathe in its

pristine cyan waters and discover the bohemian

charm of this off-the-beaten-path

beach. Once a popular free-camping spot,

Pefkoulia now offers a section with sunloungers

and umbrellas. If you prefer to

bring your own shade or just lay in the sun,

there’s plenty of room. If, again, you prefer

skinny-dipping to wearing a swimsuit,

you’ll find a welcoming environment at the

far end of the beach.

56

Destination

LEFKADA

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

Egremni

If you’re dreaming of milky blue seas and otherworldly

landscapes, this stunning and expansive

beach is sure to become your favorite destination.

Egremni retains its pristine charm and

is the picture-perfect setting for utter repose.

Much like Porto Katsiki, its “ri val” in beauty,

E gremni demands you break a sweat to reach

it. But a rejuvenating dip in the sea will make

you quickly forget the effort and immerse you

in the splendid embrace of mother nature.

Tip: A great part of its charm is the

absence of facilities, so make sure

you carry whatever you need for an

enjoyable beach day, an umbrella or

tent for shade, water and snacks.

Kathisma

An endless sandy beach with astounding and

irresistible ultramarine seas. Add to that a lively,

cosmopolitan aura and you’ll understand why

this coastline has a dedicated following. The

beach attracts a mainly young crowd and is

fully organized with sun loungers, umbrellas,

beach bars and restaurants offering a full

range of services to visitors. Try to come early

if you’re here in July or August as it can fill to

capacity, especially on the weekends.

LEFKADA 57

Agios Nikitas

If you’re looking for the quintessential beach,

you’ll find it on the coast of Agios Nikitas. Its dreamy

shore of silky sand, peppered with tiny pebbles,

stretches along translucent emerald seas perfect

for snorkeling, so don’t forget to pack your gear!

Much beloved for its picturesque scenery and

close proximity to Lefkada’s Old Town, Agios Nikitas

is also a top destination for families and anyone

who prefers the calm seas of an always sheltered

cove. You won’t find much natural shade on

this pristine beach so it’s best to bring your own.

Mylos

No matter how much you’ve heard about the island’s

energy and unbridled charm, words can’t describe

the exhilaration of diving into the sparkling azure

waters here for the first time. Lush vegetation

stretches to the shore of this stunning sandy

beach. The cyan cove, that until recently was visited

strictly by locals and very few informed travellers,

can be reached by footpath or boat from

the village of Agios Nikitas. No longer an insider’s

destination, Mylos now draws a more mainstream

crowd.

58

Destination

LEFKADA

www.lefkadaslowguide.gr

Agiofylli

It’s impossible to capture the magic of this place

in words. Agiofylli is a tiny, almost hidden beach

wondrously laced with lush vegetation. The idyllic

scene is made complete by the crystal waters

and impressive submarine life waiting to be discovered,

so don’t forget to bring your snorkeling

mask. You can reach the beach by boat from

Vasiliki. Get an early start if you want to beat the

crowds.

Vasiliki

Vasiliki is an international destination for windsurfers

on account of the region’s prevailing

winds. It’s also preferred by families with kids

because of the shallow waters and sandy seabed.

Here you’ll find an abundance of beach loungers

and umbrellas, snacks and refreshments, proper

food and a variety of water-sports for a gratifying

all-day experience.

Life’s Better

Lefkada Awaits

Every bay, a new story to tell

Imagine yourself sailing across the alluring, crystal-clear

waters of the Ionian Sea: swimming,

sunbathing on golden beaches, and waking up

somewhere new each morning. Explore charming

seaside villages, drop anchor in hidden bays,

and let the rhythm of the waves guide your days.

Lefkada is truly a paradise for sailors and this

summer, your dream voyage awaits.

The Ionian Sea unfolds as a chain of breathtaking

islands — from small untouched islets to vibrant

harbors full of life. Known among sailors as one

of the safest and most beautiful sailing regions

in the world, it offers gentle winds, calm seas,

and countless protected anchorages.

When to Sail the Ionian:

The sailing season stretches from April to October, with

each month offering its own charm. In April and May,

wildflowers paint the island in color, tavernas open their

doors, and the sea begins to warm, perfect for tranquil

exploration (and great value for yacht charters!).

By June, temperatures rise and the sea invites you in;

July and August bring the vibrant energy of summer, with

steady northwest winds ideal for smooth sailing. Unlike

the Aegean, the Ionian remains calm and welcoming,

untouched by the fierce Meltemi winds.

As autumn arrives, the tempo slows. September and

October are pure magic: gentle breezes, warm waters, and

peaceful anchorages all to yourself. It’s the perfect time

to experience Lefkada’s maritime soul at its most serene.

Bareboat, skippered or crewed?

Well, it’s up to you!

The bareboat yacht charter comes without a skipper, so you can be your own captain as long

as you are an experienced skipper with a valid international sailing license. Keep in mind that

in that case you should also need a co-skipper, an assisting crew member (up to 18 years old)

with some boating experience.

The skippered charter is a very common option for those who don’t have a boat license or

they just want to have more free time on board and fully enjoy their sailing vacations. You can

hire a sailing yacht with a professional skipper. With the freedom to create your own itinerary,

your skipper will help you explore the Ionian islands and discover a secret summer paradise

only a few knew about. Keep in mind that this option comes with an extra cost, the skipper

has to get paid.

The crewed yacht charter offers you a superlative sailing charter experience and a more luxury

vibe on board! Your yacht or catamaran comes with an experienced captain and hostess who

will take care of all navigation and organisational, as well as the cleanliness and the tidiness

of the boat, leaving you free to enjoy your tour.

roughly from noon until

dusk, the western and

northwestern winds paint

the horizon with sails in

motion, turning the coastline

into a living canvas

of colour and speed. As

the sun dips lower, golden

light dances across the

waves, and the rhythmic

hum of the wind becomes

the island’s evening song,

a siren call for those who

live for the freedom of the

open sea. Between the

scent of salt in the air and

boards skimming the surface,

Agios Ioannis exudes

an irresistible sense of

motion and vitality, capturing

the essence of pure,

unbounded adventure.

Vassiliki: Where the Wind Never Sleeps

Vassiliki stands among the world’s premier windsurfing

destinations, a sun-drenched bay where

energy and elegance collide. Here, the famed

Eric phenomenon, born from the area’s distinctive

topography, creates ideal conditions for all

skill levels: steady winds that build gradually in

strength, forming a natural rhythm between sea

and sky. Beginners glide across calm morning

waters, while seasoned athletes carve and dance

on the afternoon swells in a display of pure freedom.

As sails shimmer against the Ionian blue

and boards skim the surface, Vassiliki becomes

your own paradise.

Water sports

means playtime

If the sea means playtime

for you, Lefkada offers

endless ways to dive into

fun. Ride the Ringo across

sapphire waters, laugh for

hours on the Crazy UFO, or

take a Banana tour with

friends as you admire the

island’s dazzling coastline.

For a lighter workout, hop

on a Pedal Boat — the

perfect way to balance

fun and fitness under the

Ionian sun.

Underwater

Exploration

Lefkada is one of Greece’s

premier destinations for recreational diving. Its

striking seabed and crystal-clear waters mesmerise

divers of all experience levels. Colourful fish, coral

reefs, and seashells greet visitors instantly, while

gorges, rock formations, and hidden caves complete

the island’s magnificent underwater mosaic. Those

drawn to the aquatic world will find excellent diving

schools in Nikiana, Nydri, and Vassiliki.

Beaches

near Lefkada town

The beaches closest to Lefkada’s center may not enjoy the

status of the island’s west coast beaches, but they’re perfect

for refreshing dips and relaxation far from the crowds.

Ammoglossa

Crystalline sand, blue-green seas and a view of the emblematic Agia

Mavra Castle. What more could you ask from this splendid alternative

to Lefkada’s most visited beaches? Ammoglossa beach sits just to the

right of the floating bridge at Lefkada’s canal entrance. Though it’s

not organized and doesn’t offer natural shade, it’s a favorite choice

for those seeking calm waters. If you’d rather not walk (approximately

15 minutes from Lefkada Town’s old wooden bridge) you can take the

bus that runs along this route in summer – see the timetable for daily,

mostly morning, service hours. If you have a car, limited parking is

available at the beach.

Ammoglossa

Kastro

Adjacent to Ammoglossa you’ll find Kastro,

a fine-pebbled beach with dreamy translucent

waters perfect for hours of sun

bathing and exhilarating dips in the sea.

The once thriving TAOL winery, a regional

landmark, maintains a vivid dialogue with

the island’s past. The beach is relatively

quiet and attracts mostly locals that come

for a quick, refreshing, work-break. Sunloungers

and umbrellas are available on

a small portion of the beach where you

can also order coffee, snacks and anything

else you’d like to enjoy as you relax under

the sun. Like Ammoglossa, you can reach

the beach on foot as well as by car or bus.

Gyra

Further along, beyond Kastro, lies Gyra beach, a narrow

strip of land that embraces the lagoon and stretches

the few kilometers to Mylos and Agios Ioannis. Calm

and sheltered from the wind, Gyra is the ideal family

beach as it’s here that most of the locals first learned

to swim. There are large expanses between the organized

sections where you can enjoy the seaside undisturbed.

Take care to avoid submerged rocky areas and

sea urchins, a small nuisance that is nonetheless a

testament to the water’s purity.

Mili

Here luscious sand, petit pebbles and deep-blue

waters keep company to the 4 surviving windmills

for which this expansive beach is named. A small

portion of the beach is organized with umbrellas and

sun-loungers with plenty of free space in between. Mili

is the top choice for kite and windsurfers on account

of the thermal winds that blow here all summer long.

The colorful kites and sails offer a dazzling spectacle

as they sway in the water and though the waves might

keep you ashore some days, your photo opportunities

will more than make up for it.

Agios Ioannis

Agios Ioannis, with its emerald waters, is adjacent

to Mili beach and the absolute mecca

of kitesurfing. It attracts more and more visitors

each year, not just for the spectacular

swimming and easy accessibility, but for the

plethora of gastronomical experiences available

here. The water is crystal clear but care

should be taken to avoid submerged rocks in

certain areas. Swim shoes are recommended if

you have tender feet! At the beach’s edge, the

cliffs offer plentiful shade. Here swimmers can

take a break from the blazing Ionian sun and

enjoy the picturesque chapel Agios Ioannis

“Antzousi” for which the beach is named. The

view from this spot is sure to be one of the

highlight of your visit so don’t miss it. Along

the beach you’ll find elegant beach bars and

taverns where you can replenish the calories

you “burned” swimming with a cold bear and

a delicious meal! You can reach Agios Ioannis

by bus (only morning routes), bicycle or on

foot. If you come with your own car, please

note that parking is only available along the

road. It’s best to leave your vehicle as you

approach, rather than drive to the farther end

of the road where, if there are many visitors,

it may be difficult to maneuver.

East

Kalligoni, Karyotes

Lygia

The east side is predominantly green with

tranquil landscapes and calm seas. Setting out

from Lefkada town in the direction of Nydri, is

the community of Kalligoni, built on the site of

ancient Nirikos, the island’s first capital from

antiquity to the 13th century AD, when it was

given the name of Lefkada. There are still clear

traces of the enormous masonry blocks of the

Cyclopean wall at the site called Koulmos and

the remains of houses, the aqueduct, water

reservoirs and vaults.

Karyotes is the next village along the route.

It was built in its present location in the 50s,

and before then stood higher on the hill up

above. The ruins are still there.

Archaeologists have recently uncovered the

ruins of an almost unknown ancient Greek

theater in the area of Koulmos hill. Little is

known so far about the sizeable theater but

we will learn more in the future as the excavations

continue.

Katouna, Lygia, Episkopos, Nikiana, Perigiali, Skaros hill

Moving south from Karyotes, you come to the picture-perfect harbour of Lygia, the outlet to the sea of

the mountain village of Katouna. It is one of Western Greece’s most important fish-wharfs. Nowadays,

besides fishing and farming, the inhabitants find a lot of employment in the tourist sector and there

is a number of newly-built hotels, rooms to let and seafront taverns serving fresh fish and a variety

of other dishes.

It is worth making a detour from Karyotes area towards the Alexander’s Salt Marsh to see the remains

of the old salt works which were particularly important to the economy of Lefkada in the past. The

scenery here is interesting and unusual.

The beaches of the eastern side begin just after the picturesque harbour of Lygia which is 6 km from

Lefkada town. As far as Nydri you will find countless and quiet beach spots. The scenery is striking,

especially in the Nikiana area and the greenery reaches almost to the water’s edge. There are restaurants

and lodgings all along the coastline.

Skaros hill is one of the best spots in the interior of Lefkada with rare plants, a forest of a rare species

of oak with spectacular geological formation. The top of the journey will reward you with a magnificent

Nydri: The cosmopolitan village

that will astound you

Nydri is the embodiment of Lefkada’s worldly character,

boasting an island ambience, top-notch tourism

infrastructure and significant environmental

and archeological sites. Whether you’re a beach

fanatic or water-sports fan, a restless hiker or a

seasoned cyclist, a bar hopper or a foodie, you’ll

find everything you’re dreaming of.

To a large extent, Nydri owes its repute to Aristotle

Onassis’ private resort on adjacent Scorpios, a small

island purchased by the shipping magnate in 1963.

Here Onassis threw legendary parties and hosted

the crème de la crème of his jet set contemporaries,

spawning the rise of Nydri from a humble fishing

village to a cosmopolitan destination that gained

worldwide publicity.

During summer Nydri is abuzz with energy, with its

lively promenade and charming palm-tree lined

harbor where locals and visitors love to meet. Take

a leisurely stroll and absorb the divine raw beauty

of the picture-perfect surroundings, especially if

you’re a newcomer.

Once here, don’t miss the opportunity to take a

day cruise to Lefkada’s most popular beaches and

adjacent islets - Scorpios, Madouri, Prigiponisia - as

well as the closest Heptanese islands, Kefalonia

Dimossari Waterfalls

beyond the beaches

Lefkada island is home to a staggering

array of amazing beaches with fine, icingsugar

sand and inviting turquoise waters,

you know that right? What you may not

know about Lefkada is that this green,

lush and gorgeous island has a hidden

treasure called ‘’Dimossari’’. Well, to be

honest the place is not exactly a secret

because this beauty cannot be hidden

but believe me, these waterfalls create a

peaceful oasis of freshness that you won’t

forget. So a visit here is a must!

Dimossari waterfalls (aka Nydri waterfalls)

are located in the eastern part of Lefkada

island, on the outskirts of Nydri. Before

reaching the centre of Nydri you will see

in your right a ring road Follow that road

and after a while, on your right, find a sign

that leads to the waterfalls.

The water in this amazing natural spot is

refreshingly cool. Usually is not crowded

and the hike to get there is equally amazing.

The best time to visit Dimossari waterfalls

is from May to September.

Lefkada:

the home of Odysseus

according to W. Dörpfeld

He carried out excavations in Olympia and in many other areas of archaeological interest

in Greece. He worked together with his compatriot Heinrich Schliemann at the excavations

of Troy and Tiryns. In later life he maintained the theory that Lefkada is Homer’s

Ithaca. To support his claim, he drew on geographic observations and finds from excavations,

mainly from the area of Nydri, writing the work Alt Ithaka on the subject.

His theory is rejected by some and

accepted by others, one of his supporters

being the known contemporary French

buried on the promontory of Agia Kyriaki

on a hillock which he himself had named

‘’Lofos ton Nymfon’’ (Numphs’ Hill).

Choirospilia

In a cave south of the village Evgyros,

Wilhelm Dörpfeld had discovered traces of

prehistoric habitation, of life in the Neolithic

era, which led him to surmise that

this was the site of Eumaeus’ (the Odyssey’s

swineherd) stables. The cave’s name,

Choirospilia (frome the greek hoiros- pig)

Ancient Farmhouse

High up above the village of Poros, at the

site of Pyrgi on the outskirts of a vale of

olive trees, there are some ruins of an

ancient farm house, dating from the Hellenistic

period (325-100 BC), indicating the

construction of tower houses (pyrgospita).

Prehistoric tumuli at Nydri

South of Nydri there are sites of special

archaelogical interest. There are tombs and

ruins of buildings dating to the Proto-Helladic

II period of the third millennium BC. Among

the finds are objects suggesting a stratified

society and the existence of a ruling class.

The German archaelogist Wilhelm Dörpfeld

was the first to carry out excavations in the

Nydri plain from 1901 to 1913. Many of his

finds from these excavations are displayed in

the Archaelogical Museum, in Lefkada town.

Among the hidden gems of Lefkada lies a small

natural wonder: Dessimi Beach. Nestled in a

naturally sheltered bay on the outer side of Vlycho,

this beach doesn’t merely promise beauty;

it reveals it with rare generosity to visitors eager

to discover the secrets the island guards in quiet

devotion.

The sight that greets you at Dessimi feels almost

otherworldly: gleaming white pebbles cover

every inch of the shore, while the water transforms

throughout the day from deep emerald

in the early morning to dazzling turquoise as

the sun climbs higher. It is as if the sea itself

chooses which facet of its character to unveil

each time.

Encircling the cove, the Ionian’s signature vegetation

sets the scene: dense, fragrant trees that

reach almost to the water’s edge, offering cool

shade during the hottest hours of the day. Dessimi

is a free-access beach, so don’t expect rows

of umbrellas and loungers; instead, prepare for

pure tranquility, with only the ceaseless song of

cicadas as your soundtrack.

Here, you’ll find the authenticity many seek:

families enjoy the safety of the shallow, calm

waters, while couples, friends, or solo travellers

surrender to the poetic allure of exploration. By

canoe, small boat, or pedal boat, you can drift

along the shoreline, discovering hidden caves

and secluded coves accessible only from the

sea.

Mikros Gialos, Sivota, Ammouso

Below Poros village, on the road to the sea, there

is the pretty little beach of Mikros Gialos, a peaceful

and attractive beach with pebbles where the

sea is unpolluted, in sheltered Rouda Bay. Being

an organized beach, it is on the top of the visitor’s

list.

On the main road, some 6 km from Poros, a road goes

down to the sea and to Sivota. This enchanting

village is built right on the shore in the embrace

of green hills. It offers mooring and refuelling for

many boats and a rest for the crews. According to

Dörpfeld’s theory, this is where Odysseus landed

on his return home. Today it offers some of the

island’s best known fish tavernas serving delicious

fresh fish, lobster and seafood.

Ammouso is a beach worth visiting on the southern

A gem of a beach in Lefkada

This lilliputian treasure, with its turquoise waters and lush green coastline, lies thirty kilometres

while the other half is free. So whether you want to relax in a sun-lounger or prefer the privacy of

your own umbrella, there’s a place for you. If you arrive early, there’s plenty of natural shade. But

Due to its geographic location, Mikros Gialos is always sheltered from the wind,

so it’s a favorite among families with small children, especially on windy days.

The seabed is mostly sandy with some flat stones in places. The water is unbelievably

clear while the closed bay creates a pool-like impression that makes

you want to spend the entire day in the water. With ample activities like seacycling

and canoeing to choose from, you’re bound to do just that. All along the

beach you’ll find cafes, taverns and mini-markets to satisfy your needs.

If you visit Mikros Gialos during high season, you’ll need some luck finding a

free place to park. Our suggestion is to start early and park along the road.

Otherwise, look for one of the private car parks.

Nestled at the southern tip of Lefkada, Vasiliki is among

the island’s most iconic and well-developed destinations,

seamlessly blending its spellbinding natural beauty with

a discreet, unpretentious cosmopolitan charm.

The bay boasts mesmerising turquoise waters and shimmering

pebbles that in some spots give way to fine sand.

It is widely regarded as one of Lefkada’s safest and most

welcoming beaches for swimming. Its calm, warm waters

are ideal even for younger swimmers, while the beach

itself is fully organised, offering sun loungers, umbrellas,

beach bars, traditional tavernas, and a host of facilities

for water sports. One thing is certain: here, you will want

for nothing.

But Vasiliki is far more than just a picturesque beach, it

holds international renown as a premier destination for

water sports, particularly windsurfing. It proudly ranks

among Europe’s top three windsurfing beaches and

stands within the world’s top ten, thanks to the famous

thermal wind known locally as Eric.

Blowing steadily at around 5 to 6 on the Beaufort scale,

Eric makes its appearance from April through October,

picking up in the early afternoon and peaking as evening

approaches. This dependable breeze fills the sails with

vigour, creating a dazzling spectacle of watery acrobatics

that captivates all who witness it.

Each summer, hundreds of athletes and thousands of

visitors descend upon Vasiliki, whether to participate in

or simply marvel at the annual Watersports Festival and

the International Sailing Regatta—two standout events

that have become cornerstones of the Ionian summer

in Vasiliki!

Destination

LEFKADA 117

Beyond windsurfing, the area offers a wealth of other activities: sailing, kayaking,

diving, all provided through well-equipped schools and rental centers

catering to every level of experience. And if water sports are not your cup

of tea, fret not-the broader region abounds with scenic hiking trails, cycling

routes, and even opportunities for horseback riding.

The village itself is divided into two main areas: the traditional fishing harbor

of Vasiliki, clustered around the port, and the more recently developed Ponti

district, home to modern tourist amenities. The port of Vasiliki also serves as a

gateway to nearby islands and beaches, with regular ferry services to Kefalonia,

Ithaca, Agiofylli, and beyond, making it the perfect launch point for day trips to

some of the Ionian’s most iconic spots.

The area also holds significant historical interest. Archaeological finds in the

surrounding valley and within the Choirospilia cave of Evgiros testify to human

habitation dating back to the Neolithic era. Nearby, the dramatic Cape Lefkatas

where, according to legend, the poetess Sappho leapt to her death over an

unrequited love-imbues the landscape with a near-mythical aura.

Today, Vasiliki stands as a modern, multifaceted destination, offering comfort

and high-quality amenities while remaining true to its character. It effortlessly

combines relaxation, adventure, and authentic local cuisine within a landscape

of exceptional natural beauty.

Where’ve you been so long, Agiofylli?

You’ll fall in love with Agiofylli at a glance. Lilliputian,

charming, divine, it’s just what you

need to unwind this summer. This south coast

beach resembles Porto Katsiki. Though it’s not

included in Lefkada’s 3 super-star beaches, it’s

not to be missed, with its dreamy emerald water

and sparkling snow-white pebbles cradled by

lush green vegetation that clings to the coast.

Always sheltered from the prevailing winds, the

cove’s deep water remains unrustled and clear,

perfect for swimming and frolicking underwater.

The innumerable fish and impressive seabed are

perfect for snorkeling so don’t forget to bring

your mask and fins.

Take your beach umbrella!

A portion of the beach is free while the rest is

organized with beach umbrellas and loungechairs.

In July and August, it’s completely packed

so come early in the morning or in late afternoon

to avoid the crowds. There’s no natural shade

here until the sun starts to set, so you’ll need

an umbrella.

How do I get to Agiofylli?

During the summer months, boats depart Vasiliki

for Agiofylli about once an hour. The dreamlike

20-minute journey costs 7 Euros round trip. You

can also reach Agiofylli on foot. Drive southeast

from the marina at Vasiliki. Take care as the dirt

road is rough and narrow in places. There is a

private parking area close to the beach.

You can also park it anywhere you find space

without paying and walk the rest of the way.

Note that if you come on foot, you must descend

several steps to reach the beach. There is a

canteen near the parking area that offers cool

refreshments and snacks.

Cape Lefkatas

From Athani, the last stop has to be Cape Lefkatas or

Kavos tis Nyras or Kavos tis Kyras. The landscape takes

your breath away. Sheer cliffs and bottomless, ranging

seas create scenery of unimaginable wildness. They

say that it is these white cliffs that gave Lefkada its

name. Cape Lefkatas gives the impression of having

been touched by a divinity, evoking in the contemplator

a feeling of eternity: here the most ancient legends meet

Sappho, the most significant poetess of antiquity,

hemmed in by olive trees. There are gorgeous

views from there of the Ionian Sea from a number

of various different angles. Continuing along

best: Pefkoulia. Here the pine trees descend

down the slopes, all the way to the seashore.

The sea is wonderfully clear and the strand is of

fine, rice-like grains, as on almost all the beaches

At Pefkoulia you’ll realize “how much blue God spends so we cannot see him”

The only problem visitor’s encounter in Lefkada is choosing between so many incredibly beautiful

beaches. Let’s take Pefkoulia, for instance, a stunning beach that has the “misfortune” of being situated

on Lefkada’s superstar west coast. This year come see for yourself why Pefkoulia deserves to be

on your “must visit” list.

At the cusp of an emerald green pine forest and the infinite blue of the Ionian sea lies the small earthly

paradise aptly named Pefkoulia. This cool oasis of golden sand, sparkling pebbles and crystal clear water

in every shade of blue is the postcard perfect beach you’ll never forget, perfumed by the scent of pine.

A portion of the beach is organized with umbrellas and sun loungers, while the rest if free. There is

little natural shade, so if you don’t intend to rent an umbrella, be sure to bring your own. The perfect

spot for basking endlessly under the hot August sun, cooling off with a plunge and, naturally, exploring.

Pefkoulia - Bikini, 1 - 0

There’s room for everyone on this spacious beach

cohabited by families and groups of friends, romantic

couples and naturists. Even in August, you’ll find

a secluded niche. If you like to skinny-dip and bask

in the sun just as you came into this world, the

clothing optional “section” is just past the large

boulder on the left.

You’ll come for the sunset (too)

The magic doesn’t end with the aquamarine waters.

Make sure you plan to stay until sunset and see the

iridescent sea awash in every imaginable shade of

orange and red.

How do I get to Pefkoulia?

Pefkoulia lies on the island’s northwest coast,

between Lefkada’s old town and the seaside village

Agios Nikitas. The beach is just 10km from the

town and the road there is excellent. There is a free

parking area as you approach, but from mid-July

to mid-August, it’s likely you’ll have to park on the

roadside. If you don’t have your own vehicle, take

one of the buses that run frequently along this

route in the summer months.

Agios Nikitas

A few kilometres further on is Agios Nikitas,

listed as a village of the national heritage.

It has attractive stone-built houses,

shouldering one another with their roofs

almost touching, not only because of

limited space but also facilitating escape

in case of the pirate raids of the past.

Despite the unavoidable additional

buildings in the surrounding area, the

village preserves its charm. The sea that

laps the seafront is crystal-clean and is a

joy to swim in, with the added enjoyment

of its setting amid enchanting scenery.

Mylos

If we had to pick just one place that

embodies the essence of Greek summers,

it would be Milos Beach- a 730

meter stretch of thick sand and white

pebbles nestled beside dramatic rock

formations and cream sand dunes. No

matter how much you’ve heard about

the island’s energy and unbridled charm,

words can’t describe the exhilaration of

diving into the sparkling azure waters

here for the first time. The cyan cove,

that until recently was visited strictly by

locals and very few informed travellers,

can be reached by footpath or boat from

the village of Agios Nikitas.

AGIOS NIKITAS

Just 15 minutes away from Lefkada’s old

town is one of the island’s most enchanting

traditional villages, the seaside fishing

hamlet of Agios Nikitas. Located on

the northwest coast between Pefkoulia

and Kathisma, it’s a harmony of simplicity

and sophistication. Here, amid the

amphitheatrical cluster of stone houses,

the meandering cobblestone streets, the

gardens that overflow with bougainvilleas,

geraniums and basil plants and the

tiny crystal cove that beckons visitors for

a refreshing dip, you’ll feel as if you’ve

travelled back in time.

Swimming in an earthly paradise

Agios Nikitas beach is a favourite for Instagramers

and, when you set eyes on it, you’ll understand why.

Refreshing cyan waters, awarded Blue Flag status

year after year, golden pebbled sand and lush green

as far as you can see. The small cove offers shelter

from the prevailing winds, making Agios Nikitas the

perfect beach for families with small children. Of

course, the sea is quite deep here, as is the case

at all of Lefkada’s west coast beaches where care

should be taken by inexperienced swimmers.

The beach has very little natural shade, in the

afternoon only, and there are no beach umbrellas/

loungers for rent. So make sure you bring your own

umbrellas, mats, hats and sunscreen, of course! Also

keep in mind that this small beach usually draws

a large crowd between mid-July and mid-August,

so come early in the morning or in late afternoon

to enjoy this singular place.

From Agios Nikitas to Mylos

It takes approximately 20 minutes by foot,

along a beautiful shady path, to walk from

Agios Nikitas to Mylos beach. The route is

marked and begins at the pedestrian street

west of the village. Alternatively you can

take one of the small boats that run every

half hour and enjoy the same route by sea.

Mylos beach, named for the old windmill

at its edge, will take your breath away with

its wild terrain, its sparkling thick sand dotted

with white pebbles and its diaphanous

cyan waters.

How to get to Agios Nikitas

A 12km route leads to Agios Nikitas within a lush

green landscape. You can leave your car in the

parking area just over the road, or park roadside.

Keep in mind that cars are not allowed inside the

village. Another, greener option is taking the bus,

in which case you won’t need to look for a parking

space. Just check the timetable for the next,

frequent, departure when you’re ready to go. Find

the entrance to the village after the stoplight or

use the central pedestrian street and walk down

to the square.

Kathisma wears different colors throughout

After Kathisma, there is the village of Kalamitsi,

which has four beaches: Megali Petra,

Kavalikefta, Avali, and Theotokos. Porto Katsiki,

is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the

island’s remarkable coast. Steep cliffs lace

the pebbled shore and cyan waters of this

aptly named “Goat Cove”, which was, until

its recent discovery, inhabited exclusively

by adorable katsikia. Your awe will remain

undiminished, no matter how many times you

best silky, milky-powder-white sand beaches

of Europe with perfectly translucent clear

waters and dramatic white limestone cliffs.

For more than 6 years the only way to reach

remote Egkremnoi was by boat, but now the

Take a Boat - the easy way

During the summer months, small boats run

Take the Trail - the hard way

The more demanding way to reach Milos is on

seaside destination this summer. As soon as you

with its stark, almost “Caribbean” antithesis of

turquoise and white - you’ll discern the unique

aura that keeps people coming back for more. If

you’ve been dreaming for months about working

on a deep summer tan, you can rent a loungechair

and umbrella set or just lay your beach

towel anywhere there’s room in the golden sand.

After all, this queen of cosmopolitan beaches is

over a kilometer long, so there’s room for everyone.

You’ll get your fill of sunbathing, swimming,

diving and non-stop snorkeling while paragliders

launch from the lush slopes above and land on

the beach. Whenever you feel like having a bite or

just want a break from the hot August sun, you’ll

find beach bars, sophisticated restaurants and

cafes to choose from right by the beach.

Another of the beach’s highlight attractions is the

instagrammable sunset that paints the horizon a

scarlet red. If you visit the beach in the afternoon,

take care to prolong your heliotherapy until dusk

and experience this mesmerizing spectacle. As

the sun strokes the boundless sea, you’ll whisper

the vows of your eternal connection with Lefkada.

FYI - Kathisma Beach

There is a lifeguard on duty at

Kathisma Beach, but extra care should

be taken, especially if you are escorting

children, as the sea deepens abruptly.

Often, if it’s windy, the waves are quite

steep, so even if you consider yourself

a good swimmer, you should probably

avoid testing your skills in these

conditions.

“Don’t forget your hat. The sun really

burns at Kathisma!” is what our mothers

would say when we went to the beach,

and they were right. Remember to take

your sunscreen too, unless you prefer

the lobster look.

How to get to Kathisma

Starting from the Old Town, a lush 15

kilometer route through enchanting villages

and dense, aromatic vegetation

takes us to the incredible beach that

tops the charts of tourist guides across

the globe. Follow the sign for Kathisma

to the right, after the village of Agios

Nikitas. The road is paved and an easy

drive, but you may have some difficulty

finding space to park* between mid-

July and mid-August, something you can

avoid by going early in the day. If you

don’t feel like driving, you can take one

introspection. Alexandros was most likely named

for one of the three Holy Fathers that, in 325 A.D.,

founded Lefkada’s first Christian hermitage in a

cave between Nikiana and Alexandros. One of the

island’s oldest and most beautiful villages.

Alexandros will welcome you with the intoxicating

aroma of wild oregano. Soon after, its beloved

canine mascot “Spyros” will take the lead amidst

traditional stone houses and walls, faded pastel

shutters and nature’s explosive vitality that surges,

like an exuberant hymn to joy, through every nook

and cranny.

Here the landscape is in constant flux. Summer’s

thick vegetation offers a refreshing canopy for tired

hikers while autumn’s magical mosaic of gold and

orange is a true feast for the eyes. Alexandros was

once a vibrant village renowned for its “panigyri”

and impromptu musical gatherings that would last

‘til dawn in the small village square. Locals were

considered especially fun-loving and thought to

have a musical “bloodline”. In the early 1970’s many

residents abandoned the mountain settlement for

the coast, seeking alternative means of livelihood

in Nikiana.

Today Alexandros’ year-round residents are scarce,

but each summer the village is revitalised by travellers

who prefer this alternative and carefully curated

destination. Local organizations like “Fygos - The

Association of Friends of Alexandros” play an

important role in preserving the village’s traditional

architecture, spotlighting its rich cultural heritage

and ensuring authentic experiences for its visitors.

Forest of Skaros

To reach the age-old oak woods, take the road

towards Nydri, then follow signs for Alexandros after

the Nikiana intersection. Just before you reach the

village, you’ll see markers for the Skaros footpath.

A short hike will bring you to the heart of Skaros

Forest. The imposing site hosts rare forms of oak,

strange rock formations and a breathtaking view

of the Prigiponisia islets. Archaeologist Wilhelm

Dörpfeld believed this was the historical site of

Homeric Niion.

Hiking in Lefkada

By Colin Cooper

If you’re drawn to the idea of exploring Greece on foot, Lefkada is the perfect

destination. This Ionian island combines easy access with a network of old stone

paths and mountain tracks that connect villages, springs, chapels, and viewpoints.

In just a short walk, you can leave the bustle of the coast behind and find

yourself among olive groves, vineyards, and high ridges with sweeping sea views.

Thanks to the Lefkada Trails project, many of these routes have been carefully

mapped and described. Whether you prefer a gentle ramble through shady valleys

or a more ambitious mountain hike, the island offers trails for every pace

and mood. Walking here means slowing down, hearing goat bells in the distance,

and discovering an authentic side of Lefkada often missed by visitors.

A New Guide for 2026

For 2026, the Lefkada Trails project has written a

new hiking book to be published by Fagotto Books,

giving visitors a beautifully designed printed companion

to the island’s network of trails. It’s the

ideal resource for anyone eager to see beyond the

beaches and discover Lefkada’s hidden heart—step

by step, path by path.

What to Do on Foot

Begin with the central villages around Karya and

Englouvi, where paths climb through pine forests

to reach old windmills, threshing floors, and mountaintop

churches that look out across the island.

Skaros Mountain offers forested trails and dramatic

viewpoints across the Ionian Sea, while in summer a

walk to the Dimosari waterfalls near Nidri provides

a refreshing reward.

Another highlight is the Syvros Springs walk, a

shaded circuit along old stone paths that passes

several natural springs and waterfalls. Sheltered by

plane trees and cooled by running water, it’s one

of the best walks for hot summer days.

paths together here for a full day’s mountain hike.

The variety is one of Lefkada’s greatest charms:

from short paths that lead down to hidden beaches,

to ridge walks that follow the island’s spine, and

even the multi-day Lefkada Trail—a long-distance

route that runs from one end of the island to the

other. Every step reveals something unexpected:

a ruined watermill, a tiny chapel in the cypresses,

or a hillside filled with the scent of thyme and

oregano. With the new Lefkada Trails book in hand,

you can choose walks that match your time, energy,

and curiosity.

For those looking for higher adventure, the plateau

of Mount Elati, crowned by the peak of Stavrotas at

1,200 m, is crossed by routes that traverse open ridges

and the rocky high plateau. The views stretch from

Ithaca to Paxos, and experienced walkers can link

When to Hike

The most rewarding seasons are spring and autumn.

In spring the island comes alive with a carpet of

wildflowers, and on warm evenings fireflies dance

in the fields. Autumn offers softer light, rich colours,

and cooler days perfect for long walks. Summer, by

contrast, can be very hot—best reserved for short,

shaded routes or early morning and evening strolls.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR HIKERS

Footwear: Trails are often stony, so

sturdy shoes are essential.

Supplies: Carry water, a hat, and

sunscreen; village springs are

refreshing but not always on route.

Respect: Close gates, greet locals,

and tread lightly—these are living

landscapes, not museum pieces.

Hiking in Lefkada

Mellisa Gorge

Starting from Lefkada, we head towards the village

of Karya. After 6km we encounter the monument

of the village rebels against the English

rule in 1819. The road leads us after 2km to a

dirt road that is the beginning of our excursion.

We reach an arch who signifies the entrance

to the gorge. Right below is the cave’s spring

where we can refill our water bottles. Walking

on a beautiful path we reach a clearing and we

head towards Kako Langadi, a path paved with

small wooden bridges, waterfalls, small lakes,

watermills where everything creates a breathtaking

scenery.

What to buy

from Lefkada

Wine

Visit Lefkada’s wineries for an immersion in local viniculture and you’re sure to fall in love with two

native “stars” – the subtly fragrant, sprightly white Vardea, and the velvety red Vertzami, with its juicy

tannins and intense acidity.

Olive oil and oil cookies

Olive groves have always been a mainstay of Lefkada’s agricultural landscape, but olive oil production

really boomed during Venetian Rule, fortifying the island’s economy. Asprolia, a PGI certified olive that

produces excellent oil, is the dominant variety grown today. It’s also the main ingredient of two scrumptious

Lefkada delicacies, ladokouloura aka olive oil cookies and ladopita, a type of halva. Crispy, fragrant

ladokouloura with Greek coffee is a habit that’s hard to break, so be sure to stock up for your return home.

Olive oil pies

Olive oil pie or hoosmeri is a traditional sweet originally from Lefkada’s alpine villages. It’s prepared

for festive occasions and as a vasilopita for New Year’s Eve. This delicious, non-dairy, halva style pie

is made with extra virgin olive oil and sweetened with honey, sugar or petimezi, a grape molasses.

Eglouvi lentils

Cultivated for centuries on the Agios Donatos

plateau, Eglouvi lentils are likely Lefkada’s most

distinguished agricultural product, with their unbelievable

flavor, creaminess and short cooking time.

They are listed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural

Heritage catalog while both the United Nations and

the International Center for Agricultural Research in

Dry Areas hold specimens of the PGI certified legume.

Due to the region’s microclimate, soil quality,

organic farming and traditional hand-harvesting,

these petit, tender and multi-colored lentils are

often snapped up before they go to market. Each

year, on August 6 th, Eglouvi hosts the Lentil Festival

where local farmers cook huge cauldrons of

lentils for guests to enjoy, paired with salt-cured

sardines, olives and plentiful wine.

Sfina

Sfina is a hard and sharp white-brined cheese made

from sheep milk. Akin to feta cheese, it’s named for

the wedge shape formed by cheesecloths during

the straining process.

Karsaniki embroidery

The globally unique “Karsaniki Stitch” was first introduced

by Karya native Maria Stavraka in the early 20

th century. Despite crippling childhood injuries, her

trademark embroidery technique was destined to

leave a mark on generations of young apprentices.

Today, Lekfada’s visitors can find wonderful handiwork,

including jewelry and design objects that feature

Karsaniki embroidery, for sale in the shops of Karya.

Pasteli and mantolato

Montolato and Pasteli, signature Heptanese sweets, hark back to the age of Venetian rule. Mantolato,

a flavorful, fluffy nougat, prepared with beaten egg whites, honey, sugar and crunchy whole roasted

almonds, carries this history in its name, as mandorla is Italian for almond. Nouveau Mantolato

variations include recipes with mixed nuts, raisins, even chocolate. Lefkada pasteli, a super crunchy

brittle made with whole almonds, is yet another exception to the standard sesame seed bar pastelis

found on other Greek islands. One more interesting piece of pasteli and mantolato history: decades

ago, these sweets were made not by bakers or confectioners, but by barbers! Today you’ll find them

in shops dedicated to Lefkada’s gastronomical traditions.

Salami

Salami Lefkadas, with its light garlicky notes, whole peppercorns and delicate, supple texture is an

Italian style cold-cut sieved through the island’s unique gastronomical history. One of the first branded

local foods available throughout Greece, it remains a delicacy for generations of food-lovers. Enjoy

it sliced to your desired thickness with a glass of wine and sharp cheeses, in sandwiches or even

cooked in sauces. Another appetizing treat to sample is Lefkada sausage.

Soumada

Soumada, or somada, as it’s pronounced in Lefkada, used to be served on joyous occasions, like wedding

engagements and weddings, as its color was considered a good omen. In fact, it was so closely linked to

weddings that people would toast “to your soumada” if you were unwed. This sweet and refreshing beverage

is found throughout Greece. In Lefkada, it’s made with bitter almond and served with a glass of cold water

and two semi-sweet coriander biscuits for dipping.

Rozoli

Rozoli is a traditional local liqueur made with orange, citron and cinnamon. Full of aroma and flavor, it’s

perfect as a digestif or as a fragrant addition to cakes and cookies.

Honey from Athani

Most of Lefkada’s honey is produced in the villages Dragano and Athani, in the island’s southwest region.

You’ll find phenomenal, directly-sourced beehive products in several kiosks along the road to Porto Katsiki,

like amber-colored thyme honey, aromatic pine honey, golden wildflower honey, propolis and royal jelly.
