Score Notes:
The piece is meant to be read as you would a standard march. Omit or take repeats as
needed/wanted.
Program Notes:
When speaking with my friend Junior, the director of the Janitell Middle School Band, I
mentioned how I wanted to try my hand at a march, with a classic Sousa form. We continued to
talk and we got to talking about Aaron Copland and my personal love for specifically
Appalachian and fiddle music. He mentioned it could be cool to sort-of combine those two
things, and I thought it would be a fun project. The intro of course takes its influence from
Appalachian Spring, but from then on I relied a little more on the form of a march, and the sound
of fiddle tunes. The first and second strains I wanted to be joyous and adventurous, but the trio
(as custom) is a little calmer. The dogfight is loud but joyful and sets us up for the 3rd strain,
complete with a typical “piccolo solo”. I tried to form this woodwind soli into more of a “fiddle”
sound, and then the piece ends with a classic stinger.
