There are quite a few perks to living in

America, as compared to my birthplace

of Scotland. (And some of

them are going to sound very superficial.)

One is the weather. When

people tell me, “Oh, I love the rain! Living in

Scotland would be perfect for me!”... I say,

“No, it wouldn’t. Not when it rains almost

every day, for at least part of the day.” I call

my old mum once a week (give or take a

week), and her first complaint is always the

weather. Take it from a native... loving the

rain is not a real thing.

There are, to be sure, quite a few other

things I like about America (vintage pickup

trucks, national parks, Manhattan, Northern

California, baseball) but let’s skip to the

relevant one: Thanksgiving, that glorious

ritual where we gather with people we love/

like/loathe, eat until we resemble upholstered

furniture, then argue about the correct

way to load a dishwasher. I like that it

heralds the beginning of the holiday season

in a way that doesn’t happen back home. I

feel sorry for my fellow Scots/Brits that the

end of November just kind of fades away...

So, if you’re one of those people who

complains about Thanksgiving, be a little

more thankful! There are extra days off

from work, along with the excuse of being

able to hang your Christmas decorations

earlier than most folks around the world.

Of course, the funny thing is that it was

actually Brits who are responsible for the

whole thing in the first place, thanks to the

folks who landed in Plymouth and decided

to throw a harvest feast in 1621. Not that it

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

was a turkey-centric afternoon of naps and

football. Rather, it was three days, partly

diplomatic, partly recreational, and mostly

about not dying. There were around 50 British

colonists and roughly 90 Wampanoag

guests. Deer was the headline protein; wild

fowl and local seafood rounded it out. Think

less Norman Rockwell, more “we made it

another year, let’s eat everything that isn’t

nailed down.”

But it took a very long time for the holiday

to become a national event. States held

their own thanksgivings whenever governors

felt like it. George Washington tried to

wrangle the idea into something national

in 1789, declaring a day of public thanks for

the new republic, but it never really caught

on. The holiday we know today really owes

its existence to one extremely persistent

woman: Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s

Lady’s Book. For 36 years she wrote editorials,

published Thanksgiving menus,

and pestered presidents with letters arguing

that a shared day of gratitude could knit

the country together. Eventually Abraham

Lincoln, in the grinding horror of the Civil

War, said yes. In October 1863 he proclaimed

the last Thursday of November a

national Thanksgiving Day, explicitly aiming

to offer unity and a pause for reflection.

And just when you think America

finally agreed on something, along came

Franklin Roosevelt in 1939, staring into the

abyss of the Great Depression and thinking,

“You know what this holiday needs? More

shopping!” Because November that year

had five Thursdays, moving Thanksgiving

up a week would lengthen the Christmas

retail season. Chaos followed. States split

into pro- and anti- “Franksgiving” camps.

Football schedules got mangled. Families

argued about calendars instead of politics,

which, in retrospect, sounds almost quaint.

By 1941 Congress solved the mess by fixing

Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of

November, where it’s remained ever since.

We don’t celebrate because history was

simple. We celebrate because it wasn’t.

Because people scraped by, helped each

other, failed each other, tried again, and

kept finding reasons to be grateful anyway.

Which reminds me of another (very superficial)

thing I like about America... the Hallmark

Channel. Watch out for a movie called

Melt My Heart This Christmas, which features

an image of Cape May Stage and Rotary

Park. Hat tip to Pete Baldwin for pointing

that out on Facebook.

Now all that’s left to say this week is,

HAPPY THANKSGIVING... y’all.

Q&A

Lou Paradise, President Of

Kiwanis Club Of Cape May

It’s the Giving Issue, so Jack Wright chatted with Lou Paradise,

president of the Kiwanis Club of Cape May, which has

been giving to the local community for more than 100 years.

Lou, what is the mission of the Kiwanas Club?

We are a group of volunteers, from all walks of life,

and every single thing that we do is all based on

children — education, food, supporting children

in any way that we can. Anything from a program

where we supply lights for bicycles to our scholarship

program.

How often do you meet? We have a members’

meeting once a week, on a Wednesday evening at

6.30. We are open for people to come and spend

time with us to see what the club is like, what

membership would be like.

You have a bar so does it function as much as

a social club as it does a place that raises money? I

would say so, yes. We also have a pretty good-sized

commercial kitchen. So we are able to cater parties

and functions as well.

How much, on average, does the Cape May

club give away each year? As an example, last year

we donated scholarships totaling $20,000 to various

young people who had submitted a paper —

that’s how we qualify who we can give to. We want

to raise that amount substantially because educational

costs are off the charts.

How many people are on your board? There

are seven of us, including myself, as the president

of the club this year.

Why do you elect a new president every year?

We want to be able to always bring in new and fresh

ideas.

How many members do you have? Around 75,

and we’re looking to increase that.

What is the age range? We recently had someone

join who is in their 20s, and we go all the way

up to people in their 80s. We have a good core, a

vibrant group of adults, but we are definitely looking

to recruit younger members.

I Googled and found out there are more than

7,000 Kiwanis clubs in the country and about

19,000 incorporated towns and cities in America.

So, that works out at one club for every two-anda-half

towns. Yeah, it’s very good coverage.

Where are the nearest clubs to Cape May? In

Wildwood and then up in Linwood.

I read that the Kiwanis only voted to allow

women in 1987. What’s the male-female split in

Cape May, would you say? The split is pretty even,

both in the membership and on the board.

How does one become a member? Do you have

to be vetted? We do vet people because we do a lot

of our interaction with children, so there’s a background

check as part of the process. People have to

come to at least two meetings to see the club, to get

a feel for it, to talk to its members. After that, we

nominate them for membership.

I read that the Kiwanis bought this clubhouse

we’re sitting in for $120 in 1924. You’re presumably

sitting on several million dollars worth of

equity. Has the club ever thought of just selling it

and giving away all the funds? Ha-ha, yes it’s been

talked about over the years, but it’s not something

that’s going to happen. We’re proud to be the only

Kiwanis organization in the country that

owns its clubhouse. And not only that, but

it’s right on the beachfront, too!

Seriously? How is that possible?! Other

Kiwanis clubs either rent their property or, in

many cases, hold their meetings in restaurants

and places like that.

A quick change of gears... where did you

grow up? In Westchester County, New York.

What was your career? I joined the

Marine Corps in 1963 and served in Vietnam

in ’64 and ’65. I had gotten some injuries

while I was in combat and I went on to

invent a topical healing technology to heal

the damage caused by cumulative trauma

injuries. That propelled me into an entrepreneurial

career with my wife. We formed

a natural medicine company, with most of

our work being done in the orthopedic area

— regenerative medicine, integrative medicine,

regenerative oncology. We did a lot

with sports franchises, especially on injury

prevention. Our focus was always on how

do we help the patient heal, as opposed to

symptom relief.

That’s impressive. When did you first

visit Cape May? My wife Aurora has cousins

who live locally so she’s been coming since

she was eight years old. I was a New York

boy so it was the likes of Jones Beach for me

when I was growing up. We started coming

here together around 1992.

What did you think of Cape May? I was

impressed. First of all, the ocean to me is like

the most life-giving thing. I love the mountains,

too, but the ocean’s always going to

take priority. When we first started coming,

they rolled up the sidewalks after Labor Day.

Then over this period of time, we saw the

town adding more attractions and events —

things like the jazz festival — and, well, you

know the rest of the story.

When did you move here full time? We

bought our house in 2018, with the intention

of mainly using it as a rental, and keeping our

home in New York. Then COVID came and

we ended up transitioning to a permanent

move here.

What does Cape May not have that

you think it should have? Resources. If you

look at the amount of taxes that come out

of this county and go to the state, it seems

like it doesn’t trickle back down in the form

of resources, but instead seems to stop at

Atlantic City. We don’t have affordable housing,

and that’s something we urgently need.

What do you like most about Cape May?

It’s a very peaceful place. It’s a wonderful

place for children and families. I think that

element has always been important for me

— it’s a safe harbor. You know you’re going

to be safe here, you know you’re going to

have fun, you know you’re going to have good

food. And the only problem that we have now

is that we don’t have Exit Zero Filling Station!

Ha-ha, well thank you for saying so.

Speaking of food, what would be your last

meal on earth? I mean, if I’m going to revert

to my Italian roots, we make our own ravioli,

we make our own lasagne and that kind

of thing. But, hmmm, it’s a very good question.

I have to think that somewhere between

amazing Thai food and classic Italian food is

what I would be looking for.

Well, it’s your last meal, so you can do

what you want. So, it’s a mash-up of Thai

and Italian? Yes, that sounds good to me!

us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee

and contemplate the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

For 10 years my husband and I have

spent Thanksgiving with our former neighbors.

When we lived in Pennsylvania, we

did everything together and continued the

friendship after we moved to Cape May.

I realized as Thanksgiving neared that I

hadn’t heard from them and reached out

by phone, Facebook and email, with no

response. Finally, I contacted their son,

thinking something was wrong, health

wise. Finally, she texted me — which I hate

in the best of times — that neither she nor

her husband want anything more to do with

us. She asked that I stop contacting her. I

am shocked. I have no idea what we did to

deserve this and wondered if you thought I

Dear Ostracized

The Answer Lady has no patience

with this behavior. You and your husband

deserve to know what your crimes are. But,

that said, it’s over. You might as well move

on. Try not to obsess about the cause of this

abrupt break. Instead, think about what a

nice Thanksgiving you are about to enjoy.

Make your reservation now. Congress Hall

is serving a buffet from 1-6pm. Ocean 7 at

the Inn of Cape May is serving holiday fare

with everything from roast turkey to prime

rib. Sapore Italiano is also open. Be thankful

for the friends you do have.

Dear Answer Lady

I recently came out to my parents

who had already picked out the person

they thought I should marry — a doctor

of course. I want to bring my partner to

Thanksgiving but have been told she is not

welcome, though they expect me to show or

be shunned. I love my parents and cannot

imagine a life without them. But I also love

my partner and cannot imagine a life without

her. What do I do? — Torn

Dear Torn

Your partner is your future. Your parents

have no right to make such demands of

you. Make your excuses — you will not be

attending and send them an array of candies

from The Original Fudge Kitchen. Hopefully,

they will reconsider the “shunning.”

Breakfast with Santa, Vendor Village, Carousel Rides & More

In most places, fall migration tapers off

with fewer and fewer birds drifting south.

In Cape May the migration ends with a

flurry — or, more accurately, a tidal wave

of southbound sea ducks and other waterbirds

cutting the corner on the north end of

Avalon. You’ve heard Avalon’s boast “cooler

by a mile.” The foundation of this is the mile

or so seaward jut off Seven Mile Beach relative

to the beaches of Sea Isle City on the north end

of Towsend’s inlet. Southbound birds hugging

the coast are suddenly confronted by a

barrier of coast so to avoid crossing land must

tack east, passing close to the parking area

between 8th and 9th streets in Avalon.

It’s at this point where, from October 1

to December 22, Cape May Bird Observatory

counters stand ready to tally the 800,000 or

so migrating scoter, gannet, loons and other

seabirds that make up the coastal flight. Six

thousand birds a day flights are not uncommon.

Mornings are best.

The near albatross-sized Northern Gannet

is a crowd pleaser. Cliff nesting birds

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

from coastal Canada and Greenland, these

grand black-and-white birds will winter for

the most part off the Carolinas, where circling

high over fish rich waters they will arrow into

the sea in spectacular dives. Here, the birds

are mostly passing single file in rollercoaster-like

strings of rising and falling birds.

Another favorite of mine is Red-throated

Loon, a slender, rapier-billed bird that flies

with its head drooped and with rapid elastic

wings beats. Breeding on small tundra

ponds, the birds are able to get airborne even

if grounded on land.

With so many eyes trained seaward, it

is not uncommon for hump-backed whales

to make the day’s tally sheet. And on the sea

wall, Ruddy Turnstone and Purple Sandpiper

are clambering. Purple Sandpipers are the last

Arctic shorebirds to migrate. A good place to

see them and Red-throated Loons up close is

the Second Avenue Jetty in Cape May.

“Cooler by a mile” takes on a whole new

meaning as fall migration winds down. If

winds are blowing northwest, the hawk watch

at Cape May Point State Park will continue

see migrating hawks through November.

Study the circling vultures. Migrating hawks

and eagles will join them. Goshawks and

Golden Eagles are always possible late in the

season. But a day filled with Red-tailed and

Red-shouldered Hawks is satisfying enough.

Mid-day when thermals are perking and skies

are cloud pocked provide peak numbers and

optimal viewing conditions.

While the rest of us are diving into

our deliciously predictable dinner

plates this week, some lucky

diners will be enjoying the Wild

Game Dinner at the Richmond

Room of the Virginia hotel. The Virginia is

known for inventive, quality cuisine that is a

step beyond ordinary, but this week they’ve

taken it further with the Wild Game Dinner.

A group of 18 diners will be treated to a “feast

for the senses” and “a celebration of the hunt,

tradition, and craftsmanship.”

The dinner is an opportunity for Chef

Jason Hanin to showcase the “artistry and

precision” required to elevate wild game for

the fine dining table. Wines and spirits will

be served with each course to enhance the

experience.

The menu begins gently enough, with

a prosciutto made from duck, and a soup

course featuring game birds, but then you

are taken into something resembling a Hunt

Ball at a Gilded Age estate, circa 1880. Rabbit

— a staple of European cuisine — is rein-

a dozen species of rabbit and hare native to

North America, and they were standard on

the pre-colonial menu, but modern American

diners, perhaps dissuaded by thoughts

of Bambi’s friend Thumper, often overlook

this “lean, nutritious meat which has been

bred for food since antiquity,” according to

culinary experts.

Then, the adventure ramps up with

Texas Antelope Heart Yakitori, prepared

with a honey-soy glaze, scallion and sesame.

Whether it’s the North American pronghorn

or the more exotic nilgai, antelope is a low fat

meat said to taste like veal. Forbes claims it’s

one of the top five meats to try. Last, we go

big, with elk, served with foie gras, chocolate

mole rojo, beetroot, and mission fig. The

American elk, likely a cousin of the red deer,

is second only to the moose in size.

Elk “can weigh up to 1100 pounds and

stand up to five feet tall at the shoulder,” and

their antlers can add four feet of height. They

are called “wapiti” by some Native Americans

in reference to their white rumps. Elk

are migratory beasts who prefer the high

altitudes of the Rockies but can roam as far

east as Michigan and Kentucky. Finish the

meal with a more familiar dessert, an apple

crostata and vanilla ice cream. Learn more

Four cat-tastic felines from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

PENNY found herself at the shelter through

no fault of her own, and this beautiful calico

deserves a loving home to call her own.

Friendly and eager for companionship, she’s

the kind of cat who just wants to be someone’s

forever pal. She is house-trained, vaccinated,

and spayed, making her ready for a

fresh start.

SIMON says “please adopt me!” He was

rescued along with his siblings who were

born on the beach. Simon is very sweet and

affectionate but will need time to adjust to a

home. He is about eight months old, healthy

and ready for a real home. Simon can be a

little slower to warm up but, once he does he

melts into your arms like butter.

MAYBELLINE & L’OREAL were born with it

– charm, adorable looks and plenty of kitten

energy. These healthy, house-trained kittens

are vaccinated and neutered, ready for a fresh

start in a loving home. They brighten every

room with their playful energy and gentle

affection. Adopt them both for double the

love – they’re worth it.

DUKE was surrendered when his previous

owners realized they did not have the experience

to manage his training needs. Potential

adopters should expect to visit him several

times before he feels fully comfortable. Once

Duke trusts you, he is incredibly affectionate.

He would do best in an adult home with

German Shepherd experience.

HONEY B is a shy girl who came to the shelter

when her owner could no longer care for

her. She spends her days quietly watching

people pass by her kennel. Honey B wags

her tail softly when it’s time to go outside

and explores the yard with curiosity.

She would do best in a calm home with older

children and a peaceful routine.

BENJI was surrendered when his owner

could not physically care for him anymore.

All Benji wants is a lap to sit on. He is quiet,

affectionate and good with other animals

and kids. Benji weighs 19 pounds but could

afford to lose a few of them. He is estimated

to be between 10-12 years old but he looks

much younger.

Happy Wanìshi Thanksgiving Day

y’all. Wanìshi is the Lenape word

for thank you. But let’s move past

the widespread revisionist history,

elaborate parades, second helpings

of stuffing and the pumpkin pie. What are

you and the gang going to watch?

There’s a good chance that if you want to

stream something or go to the movies, you’ll

“run” into Glen Powell. He is quickly becoming

Hollywood’s favorite lead, and up until

just a couple years ago, I really overlooked

him.

The guy has been acting since he was a

kid, with an appearance in Spy Kids 3 (2003).

Not exactly something I would’ve been glued

to the TV to watch. He played John Glenn

in Hidden Figures (2016) and the character of

Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

It wasn’t until the 2024 reimagining of

Twisters did he enter my consciousness! The

film was good, worth watching. Now, he stars

in a new TV series and movie. The TV show is

Chad Powers, a Hulu original about a disgraced

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

football player who gets a second chance to

play, but in disguise. The first season was

only received lukewarm by Rotten Tomatoes

critics, but audiences enjoyed it more — and I

would slightly lean with the audience on this

one. A second season is coming.

The movie is The Running Man, the second

adaptation of the Stephen King novel. The

first came in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger

in the lead. Enthusiast for this flick —

please don’t give me a hard time. It was only a

vehicle for Schwarzenegger — it did not stay

true to the book at all.

When Jesse Ventura is one of the soldiers

out to kill the lead in the 1987 version, you

get a flick that’s cartoonish and… silly. And

when you have a villain played by Richard

Dawson, the Hogan’s Heroes guy, you can’t tell

me this is cinema’s finest. Still, for nearly 40

years ago, it was great fun. I’ll give you that.

But please don’t compare these two.

Glen Powell’s running man is elevated

storytelling, much darker, and way more

true to the book (although it takes its liberties

as well). Powell plays the lead with a

LOT of anger and Colman Domingo rocks

as host of The Running Man show, Bobby T

(he always delivers!). This film is definitely

worth checking out over the holidays, and it

could certainly use the boost at the box office.

In the end, The Running Man 2025 is more

hopeful than the book, giving us all optimism

that we can resist an evil regime and succeed!

I’ll take it — hell, I need it!
