How ESS is transforming
commercial heating and cooling
stablished in 2000, ESS has evolved from a
Especialist HVAC distributor into the UK’s leading
supplier of commercial heat pump systems. Partnering
with global brands such as Samsung and Panasonic,
alongside innovative manufacturers including Maxa
and Volta, ESS delivers tailored, high-performance
solutions to meet the complex needs of modern
commercial environments.
The demand for heat pumps across commercial and
industrial sectors continues to accelerate, driven by
the global push toward decarbonisation and net zero
targets. In both the UK and Europe, government policy
and corporate sustainability commitments are reshaping
the heating landscape. As organisations transition away
from gas and other fossil-fuel systems, ESS stands at the
forefront – providing efficient, low-carbon alternatives
that enable businesses to reduce emissions, cut
operating costs, and future-proof their operations.
Over recent months, ESS has intensified its focus
on deploying large-scale heat pump systems for
commercial and industrial properties – including
offices, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.
With a deep understanding of the operational
demands and environmental challenges unique
to these sectors, ESS helps organisations enhance
building energy performance and transition
seamlessly to low-carbon heat pump technology. In
doing so, the company enables clients to cut energy
costs, improve efficiency, and meet their ESG and
sustainability commitments.
In the industrial and logistics sectors, the shift is already
underway. Businesses operating low-temperature
industrial processes, distribution centres, and
temperature-controlled warehouses are increasingly
investing in large heat pump systems – achieving
measurable gains in energy efficiency, long-term cost
reduction, and carbon footprint reduction.
Maxa Heat Pumps represent one of ESS’s most
recent strategic partnerships, bringing cutting-edge
heating and cooling technology from Italy to the UK.
Manufactured by the Ferroli Group, Maxa products
are imported and distributed across the UK, offering
industrial, commercial, and residential clients highperformance
climate control solutions.
Founded in 1992 by Luciano Tredicesimo Ferroli,
the company has grown into one of Italy’s top five
heat pump manufacturers and a leading player in
the domestic air conditioning sector. Today, Maxa
is recognised globally for its expertise in residential,
commercial, and industrial air conditioning solutions.
At the core of Maxa’s mission are environmental comfort,
sustainable growth, and ecological responsibility.
These values underpin every stage of their design and
production processes, ensuring that each system delivers
efficiency, reliability, and long-term value.
Heating & Cooling Systems
Maxa’s versatile portfolio of heating and cooling
solutions can be applied across a wide range of
environments – from domestic homes and commercial
offices to public facilities – whether for new-build
projects or retrofits. With a comprehensive selection
of heat pumps, Maxa provides reliable, adaptable
solutions tailored to every installation requirement.
Through ESS, these advanced systems can be supplied
and installed wherever high-quality climate control
is needed – from cold, temperate environments to
tropical conditions – ensuring environmental comfort
and human wellbeing wherever they are deployed.
ESS is also recognised for its deep expertise and
extensive product knowledge across a wide range of
air source heat pumps and air conditioning systems.
Beyond supply, ESS provides end-to-end support,
including pre-sales consultations, expert system
design guidance, comprehensive after-sales
technical assistance, and some of the industry’s most
respected ongoing training programs. With a strong
commitment to low-carbon and eco-friendly solutions,
ESS is helping businesses – one heat pump at a
time – to achieve and exceed their net zero and ESG
objectives.

Warehouse, Materials & Handling Automation
Europe’s largest independent tabletop retailer chooses
Autrix for major warehouse automation deployment
Phase 1 success at Wayland Games drives
expansion to a fully automated packing
solution.
utrix, the intelligent warehouse technology
Aspecialist, today announced the successful
completion of Phase 1 of a major automation
deployment with Wayland Games Limited, Europe’s
largest independent retailer for tabletop hobbies,
at their new 50,000 square foot facility in Essex.
Phase 1 has deployed Autrix’s flagship Automation
Control System (ACS) alongside an advanced
Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) based goods-to-person
solution, transforming operations across Wayland
Games’ new warehouse near Brentwood. The integrated
system is now operational, handling the company’s
extensive range of tabletop gaming products, including
Games Workshop, Warcradle, and Lego merchandise.
Proven results drive Phase 2 expansion
“Phase 1 has delivered exactly the business impact we
needed for our expansion,” said Richard Lawford, MD
& Founder of Wayland Games. “We’re processing
significantly more orders with the same team size, and
our customers are seeing faster dispatch times during
peak periods. What sets Autrix apart is their genuine
partnership approach – they didn’t just install equipment
and leave. They’ve worked alongside us to optimise
operations and ensure we’re getting maximum value
from the investment. The success we’ve achieved gives us
complete confidence to move forward with Phase 2 and
continue building our automation capabilities together.”
Building on the success of Phase 1, Phase 2 is
scheduled for November 2025. It will introduce fully
automated packing technology, further streamlining
the order fulfilment process and supporting Wayland
Games’ continued growth trajectory.
The AMR goods-to-person solution addresses the
unique challenges of specialist retail fulfilment,
bringing products directly to ergonomically designed
picking stations rather than requiring operators to
walk extensive distances. This approach enables
faster and more accurate order processing while
reducing physical demands on warehouse staff.
Strategic partnership approach
“Seeing the immediate impact of Phase 1 validates
everything we believe about making intelligent
automation accessible to growing businesses,” said
Joseph Daft, Director at Autrix. “Wayland Games
represents the best of British speciality retail – they’ve built
something remarkable in the tabletop gaming community.
Our job is to ensure their operational capabilities can
scale with their ambitions. The success of Phase 1 and
their commitment to Phase 2 demonstrates how the right
technology partnership can drive sustainable growth.”
The deployment aligns with both companies’
commitment to sustainability. The new facility features
solar panels and energy-efficient lighting, while the
operational ACS optimises operations to reduce
waste and improve resource utilisation through
intelligent order consolidation and optimised
picking routes.
About Wayland Games
Established in 2008, Wayland Games Limited is
Europe’s largest independent retailer for tabletop
hobbies, serving a passionate community of gamers
and collectors across the UK and Europe. With over
127,000 social media followers and consistently
high customer satisfaction ratings, the Essex-based
company has established itself as a trusted partner

Flow Measurement
Katronic: Ultrasonic flow measurement specialists
Katronic was contacted by a Water
treatment works to verify the flow
conditions within a single pipeline. The
client requested this service due to the
uncertainty of the reliability of the flow
readings that were reported from their
internal measurement system. The lack of
certainty was hindering daily operations,
and one potential solution was to shut
down operations temporarily in order to
install an in-line reference meter.
Rather than do this, they reached
out to Katronic. Katronic’s ultrasonic
technology offers a cost-effective, noninvasive
solution. Our engineer attended
the customer’s site to complete the
measurement service. The purpose of the
visit was to provide accurate, traceable flow
verification data for operational reference.
Once on-site, armed with the portable
KATflow 210, our engineer completed a
successful set-up within minutes. The
built-in set-up wizard ensures accurate
placement of sensors by entering the
external pipe diameter, wall thickness and
temperature. The set-up wizard calculates
and instructs the recommended spacing
for optimal performance. The diagnostic
indicators remained stable, confirming
consistent signal quality and validating the
accuracy of the setup. Making the KATflow
210 a user-friendly, reliable and accurate
measurement solution. The enhanced
battery performance of the KATflow 210,
using saver mode, measurements were
logged at a 1-second interval, the unit
could be stand-alone on-site for the 24
hours required by the customer.
Returning to the site the following day, it
was found strong and stable signal was
maintained throughout the measurement
period. The recorded flowrate values
provided a good indication of expected
performance. On average, the flowrate
was observed at approximately 430L/s,
later increasing to around 520L/s. The
recorded ranges were within the expected
flowrates for the site. Each flowrate
change persisted for several minutes,
with measurements taken every second,
demonstrating steady and dependable
performance from the flowmeter.
Comparing the data to the customer’s
internal measurement system showed
that the accuracy of the internal system
was off by 2%. This difference was deemed
to be within the range of compliance
accepted by the customer, resulting in no
further investigative action being taken.
Katronics’ non-invasive technology,
coupled with its highly skilled team of
experts, resulted in accurate, reliable, and
instantaneous flow measurements. Without
the need to halt or hinder daily operations.

8 Bishopsgate
Architect: Wilkinson Eyre
Installer: Brown and Carroll
Product: Gustafs Panel System and Gustafs Linear Rib
Photography: Liam Hammond
SA worked with architects at Wilkinson Eyre and the
Lteam at Brown and Carroll on the design and scope
for multiple areas at 8 Bishopsgate which completed
in 2023. Initial enquiries started during 2020 for our
timber panels and ribs in the entrance lobby as well as
communal dining spaces and meeting rooms.
The key element LSA were approached to supply
was the acoustic wall panels in the 50th floor Lookout
viewing platform. Given the location and purpose of
the space acoustic performance and fire resistance
were key factors when the architects were choosing
a cladding product.
The Lookout is accessed using a high-speed lift from
both the designated visitor lobby
as well as the main lift core and
has views across central London
including the river Thames, the
Shard, and St Pauls Cathedral.
Natural Walnut veneered panels were chosen in this
space to give the wall space colour, texture, and
warmth, in contrast with the panoramic windows.
The panels have a nano acoustic perforation for
high acoustic performance with minimal visual
impact making it perfect for photography and video
backdrops.
The standout feature of this space is the decorative
black stripes on the panels. This was initially designed
by the architects to be routed into the dark core
gypsum panels but after extensive samples and full
scale mock up preview it was decided that a solid
black inlay piece would give the more dramatic
effect they were looking for.
LSA also supplied Gustafs acoustic wall and ceiling
panels in matching Walnut veneer to the private
executive lounge and events space at the Lookout.
LSA also supplied Oak timber
ceilings to the common area
restaurant and breakout café
bar space on the 26th floor.
Ceiling panels in this area were
interspersed with black service
channels giving contrast against the
natural texture of the timber panels.
Linear ribs were used in the side
corridor on this floor leading from
the seating area to the lift lobby and kitchens. Ribs are a
great versatile alternative to traditional flat panels ideal
for the incorporation of invisible doors for services and
storage as well as giving flexibility of positioning on site
without the modifications required to do this with panels.
Standard module 38mm wide ribs with 12mm gaps
were used throughout to suit easy-up invisible fix
installation using Gustafs’ Base-W and Base-C grid
system. Deeper 44mm ribs were used for a dramatic
effect on the ceilings whilst low profile 22mm deep ribs
were used for the more functional ribs on the walls.
The use of Gustafs panels continues through to the
impressive meeting rooms and the green room at 8
Bishopsgate, providing acoustic performance and
textural detail to the rooms.

St Sidwells
Architect: Space and Place
Installer: New Barton Contracts Ltd
Product: ‘Shiluvit’ by Oranit
Photography: Adam Coupe
1 ,158m2 of Oranit panels were supplied for the
walls and ceilings of the award winning leisure
centre and spa in Exeter. St Sidwell’s Point opened
to the public in April 2022, providing state-of-the-art
sports and leisure facilities to the community.
The project achieved Passivhaus status, encompassing
healthy and environmentally sustainable practices
during design and build as well as ensuring ongoing
facility efficiency for energy use.
In addition to the Passivhaus status the site has won
numerous construction awards for its Environmental
Impact; earning accolades for ensuring reduced
ongoing energy usage (70% reduction compared to
similar size facilities), supporting the local economy,
and working towards carbon neutral building
practices.
LSA are proud to have contributed towards these
efforts, supplying sustainably sourced timber panels
from Oranit. Shiluvit panels from Oranit come with
PEFC certification for sustainably sourced timber
as well as Cradle-to-Cradle Bronze award for the
assessment of environmental risks in manufacturing
and optimising the running of the supplying company.
Oranit panels in 2 custom module formats were
used at the project for the walls and ceilings with
horizontally and vertically oriented blades. Yellow
Pine with a standard lacquer finish was used
throughout to retain the striking natural grain structure
of the wood throughout the space.
Panels used in the swimming pool and spa areas of the
facility, requiring additional lacquer finishing to protect the
panels from humidity and water damage in these areas.
This is a unique service offered by Oranit allowing for
more versatile product installation across more areas than
traditional panel systems including external areas.

High-quality airtightness products at
unbeatable prices
ynergie is a wholesale distribution company,
Sproviding airtightness products into the construction
industry. With over 30 years of experience operating
in the construction sector, Synergie have built a
reputation for top quality products, attention to
detail and impressive customer service.
or solvents in construction or installation. This
sustainability also extends to the overall buildings
CO 2
emissions, as increased airtightness in
buildings helps to lower energy usage and
supports the building in attaining good Building
Energy Rating (BER).
The company offers a comprehensive range of wind
tightness membranes, airtight membranes, airtight tapes,
sealants and other products for achieving optimum
rain tightness, wind tightness and airtightness results.
All its products are manufactured in Germany to the
highest standards by manufacturers with over 20 years
of experience in the development of breathable roofing
membranes, airtightness membranes, airtightness
window and connection tape, adhesives and primer.
Especially celebrated is the company’s Synergie Sd
Variable Airtightness Membrane and Vapour Control
Layer. This product has the ability to change its water
vapour performance (SD value). The membrane
becomes more diffusion open depending on the
relative humidity (RH) in the area. In the colder,
winter months, the micropores of the membrane stay
diffusion tight, preventing vapour from the warm
interior of the building diffusing into the timber roof
or wall structure, or insulated layer. However, in the
summer months, the micropores of the membrane
open, allowing any vapour or moisture trapped in the
insulated material to escape back into the building
interior and ventilate naturally. In the long run, over
a few years, this ability to act as a barrier in winter
and a breathable membrane in summer, helps to
protect the building from structural damage caused
by excessive moisture trapped in the building fabric.
The Synergie Sd Variable membrane is ideally
suited to flat roof make-ups which are not adequately
ventilated or diffusion tight towards the outside.
The Sd Variable membrane is also suitable in new
buildings where excessive moisture accumulation has
occurred during the initial construction phase of the
building process where timber elements and thermal
insulation have suffered an unplanned wetting.
The Synergie airtightness system carries several
benefits for clients. Firstly the removal of draughts
helps to cut heating bills, prevents condensation and
protects and improves the performance of thermal
insulation. The effective use of Synergie products
also helps to protect against mould development and
allows ventilation systems to work more efficiently.
Synergie’s airtightness products are also
environmentally friendly. Using no harmful toxins
With these products being used extensively in both
residential and commercial construction projects,
the company carries a large range to cater for all
possible scenarios on a building project in traditional
masonry construction, timber frame construction,
steel frame construction and modular build.
Building companies of all sizes use Synergie to
achieve national building code standards and to
build energy efficient and passive buildings to the
highest of standards. All Synergie’s products are
built in line with European harmonised standards for
energy saving; as well as carry CE Markings, where
required, under the Construction Products Regulation.
Beyond providing the highest quality products,
certified across Europe; Synergie has also garnered
a reputation for impeccable customer service. Its
long tenure in the industry means the company has
a wealth of experience with a variety of different
products and the projects they could be used in.
Utilising this bank of knowledge allows Syngerie to
offer bespoke advice to clients and point them in the
right direction when it comes to airtightness.

In some cases we also reuse rather than
recycle.
For example, we have a Recycled
Plastic Compost Tumbler/Compost
Bin – appropriately named, ‘The
Compost Creator.’ For this we reuse a
food grade plastic drum previously used
to transport food products.
Reuse is vastly superior to simply
recycling
There is no significant consumption of energy,
as there is no manufacturing process involving
heavy use of energy. We just drill a few holes
in the drum and clean it up as best we can.
Both recycling plastic as well as reusing it
keeps large amounts of plastic waste out of
expensive and now difficult to find landfill.
This results in a lower carbon footprint
and reduced human contribution to global
warming and climate change.
Recycled Mixed Plastic Lumber, recycled

Introducing the Eco Clipper
Electric Mowing Systems
co Clipper offers large area mowers that help field
Emanagers minimise mowing costs while producing
a professional finish. The Eco Clipper mowing system
was originally developed to replace the cylinder
mower in turfgrass production. The aim was to retain
the cutting performance of a well-tuned cylinder
mower, but not the high maintenance requirements
and sensitivity to mowing conditions, such as wet
grass and weeds.
The system
The smooth cutting decks with fast spinning small
blades ensure a high quality of cut and a good
distribution of clippings. Thanks to the electrically
driven blades, the mower is very economical and
quiet. The large wheels and smart mower deck linking
system ensures good contour following and enables
high mowing speeds.
The benefits
Users report high productivity gains and appreciate
the low maintenance requirements and the ability to
schedule mowing even under less favourable mowing
conditions, such as early morning dew and wet
autumn, which can often prevent removal of grass
clippings.
The models
Municipalities and sports field and park managers
have discovered the advantages of the Eco Clipper
mowing system. For them, Eco Clipper now offers
two versions: the 4.11m wide EC-FM4 Sport and
the 3.43m wide EC-FM343. Both
are positioned in front of the tractor,
providing excellent visibility and comfort
for the tractor driver.
The EC-FM4 Sport has four independent
mowing decks, mows till 4.11m wide
and folds up to 2.5m width. It only
needs 50hp, but fits best to small size
agricultural tractors. To meet the demand
for more lightweight mowers suitable for most park
tractors from 40hp upwards, the Eco Clipper FM343
has been developed. This three-part Eco Clipper front
mower cuts 343cm wide and folds to a transport
width of 170cm. As with the larger 411cm wide
EC-FM4, electricity is provided by a PTO-powered
generator behind the tractor.

Varnish
Le Tonkinois Varnish & Flexidisc Sander:
Trusted tools for lasting finishes
& D Murkin is the main UK importer for Le
B Tonkinois Varnish and the Flexidisc sander.
Established in 1992 by three brothers Derek,
Brian and Roy Murkin, the company is based in
Maidenhead and imports a range of products that
are used by professionals and amateurs to produce
fantastic finishes. Its main products have been
demonstrated and sold at numerous shows throughout
the UK for over 30 years and have proven reliable
and resilient over this time.
Le Tonkinois Varnish is an environmentally friendly
natural oil-based yacht varnish, that uses a Chinese
formula dating back two or three centuries. Designed
to remove brush-marks, bring out the natural beauty
of the timber without cracking or flaking off, this
permanent varnish is simple to use and only requires
an additional coat every few years. Proven as the
perfect solution for the amateur user seeking a
professional product, Le Tonkinois Varnish comes
available in three separate forms.
Le Tonkinois Classic is a high-quality finish known for its
exceptional penetration, even on oily timbers, creating
a strong and lasting bond without leaving brush marks.
It forms a tough, non-porous, and weatherproof coating
that is highly resistant to UV rays, sea water, and other
harsh elements. Free from harmful or irritating ingredients,
it is ideal for indoor use but also surpasses many
competitors in outdoor applications. Ecologically friendly
and free of petroleum solvents, it can be applied over
most existing finishes (excluding wax), and enhances
the natural beauty and colour of bare wood. Especially
suited for boats and garden furniture, it remains flexible
and will not crack, chip, or peel. Its natural, brilliant gloss
can also be adjusted to a matte finish if desired.
Le Tonkinois Marine No. 1 is a further refined version
of the Classic, offering enhanced purity and superior
performance. It dries faster, penetrates wood more
effectively, and is easy to apply. With improved UV
protection and greater resistance to abrasion, it provides
a more durable and long-lasting finish. Marine No. 1
also delivers a higher gloss compared to the Classic and
is less prone to skinning in the can, making it an excellent
choice for demanding marine and outdoor applications.
Le Tonkinois Parquet is ideal for flooring and employs
a strong synthetic Alkyd resin and Ester oil to return
a harder-wearing surface for foot traffic. The finish
is a little less glossy than the other two, just slightly
opaque. Furthermore, all three can be matted or
semi-matted by including Gelomat in the final coat.
Le Tonkinois is also brilliant for use on boats in fresh
water sea or sludge. Le Tonkinois is brilliant for all
materials. Because it stays flexible, it moves with the
Landscaping Products
timber, so it is even suitable for use on Oak or Cork
without cracking. Other areas of use include outdoor
and interior woodwork as well as kitchens because
it is fully waterproof, cannot be marked by hot cups
or plates, isn’t affected by water or alcohol, and is
classified safe to use in food areas.
Another notable product is the Flexidisc Sander/Grinder
that gives a superb finish on wood, metal, fibreglass, car
body fillers and all other hard materials. The Flexidisc
Basic pack includes a Flexidisc sander, steel locking nut,
abrasive discs, and cleaning rubber. In its basic state
it’s a general sander, however its capabilities are varied
meaning it converts in seconds to be used as a super-fine
finishing sander, a bench grinder, a general-purpose
sharpener, a partial angle grinder, a polish applicator/
polisher, as well as a grinder for glass and nails.
The Flexidisc Sander/Grinder is a 5” (125mm) disc
sander attachment that fits into any drill. Its flexible,
vibration-free shaft provides full control without skidding
or scuffing, ensuring smooth results with minimal effort. It
uses reusable, velcro-backed discs coated with ultra-hard
Corundum – each lasting as long as 100 standard discs.
These discs handle everything from soft plaster to steel,
and can polish rough timber faster than conventional
sanders, all while generating minimal heat, making it
safe for materials like GRP and old paint.

Motor Technology
Crane Hoist Operators have ready solution
for replacement of Obsolete Motors
Many companies that have been
operating their ageing though reliable
hoists have found that when they need to
replace hoist motors the original OEMs
either no longer exist or the motor rating
size has long since been dropped from their
production portfolio.
Who can they turn to, in order to get their
hoist back up and running as in many
cases if the slipring motor that has served
them well for 20-30 years can not be easily
replaced it could lead to an extremely full
overhead crane upgrade.
Menzel have seen this scenario grow over
the years with SME’s not able to afford a
complete new hoist just for the loss of a
motor, scratching around looking for second
hand or refurbished motors.
As such it has seen an increase in
opportunities to supply replacement motors.
Though certainly not the largest unit we have
shipped into the UK this year the pictured
motor here has a certain special relevance
to UK companies wanting to replace hoist
motors.
This cute little MEBSGR200L Crane Hoist
17kW, 415V, 730rpm Slip Ring motor
with an S4 40% Duty cycle was recently
configured to match the existing motor
envelope and delivered on time.
There are not many suppliers capable of
supplying a slip ring motor of this size so

www.menzel-motors.com
MENZEL Motors has just recently
designed and manufactured three
powerful 6,600V squirrel cage motors
as integral components for mining
pit fans.
The customer specified cylindrical motor
casings as compact as possible for its
underground ventilation system. The
greatest challenge was to implement the
required rated power of 1,700kW in
cylindrical casings.
Menzel therefore designed TEFC fin-cooled
squirrel cage motors (cooling type IC 411)
in frame size 630, an extremely unusual
design for motors this large.
The manufacture is complex, but the result is
optimal for the constricted installation
conditions in the mining industry.
In order to save additional space, all
connection cables are routed out of the pit
fan motors and the terminal
boxes are mounted outside
the fans.
Since the driven fan wheels
are mounted directly on
the motor shafts, the motor
bearing must compensate additional high
loads: radial loads up to 20,700N and
axial loads up to 27,000N.
For the required bearing service life of
100,000 hours, Menzel implemented a
special rolling bearing setup.
In addition, the motors have a second shaft
end for a holding brake. The three-phase
squirrel cage motors are designed for
operation on a frequency converter
(duty type S9) with speed changes and
reversal of the rotation direction.
This allows the pit fans not only to ventilate
the mine, but also to extract dangerous
firedamp if necessary.

Platforms
IAS for your perfect
access platform
ccess Platforms are indispensable for working at
Aheights or hard-to-reach places, providing workers
with a robust structure across many industrial sectors.
Many essential services such as air conditioning
units, pipes, and ductwork are often stored high in
the roof and access platforms are key to installation
and essential repairs/maintenance throughout the
year. With health & safety in mind, the steady, wellfabricated
structures give extra reassurance to workers,
throughout the operation period.
Independent Access Sales (IAS) is a relatively new
company but with decades of expertise behind it.
Established in 2020 by Managing Director: Richard
Martin, the Huntingdon-based company is set to take
the country by storm.
IAS is a distributor of access platforms across the UK
and Ireland and Richard brings more than 35 years of
industry experience, from scaffolding, cradle platforms,
erection, surveyor, to supervisor, “We are getting
noticed now across the industry. We have won three
awards in the last twelve months, including a Golden
Award from Media2. We’ve been to numerous trade
shows and generated a lot of interest.”
“We are excited to reveal that we have exclusively
signed with SOCAGE: producer of globally-leading
aerial platforms to distribute their truck-mounted
platforms, up to 100 metres. A truck-mounted platform is
a mobile elevating platform, which can be attached to a
road-licenced chassis and is great when you require an
access platform to be adaptable, as it can be switched
from site to site easily. We are looking forward to
adding this to our growing portfolio and by the New
Year, expect to be selling a wider range of Easylift
Spider Platforms, SOCAGE Truck Mounting Platforms
and Leonardo HD by Bravi HD to new and existing
customers across: facilities management, construction,
heritage restoration to tree surgery and many more.”
The existing SOCAGE truck line has been flying off
the shelves with customers already this year: the
SOCAGE 20T carries loads up to 230kg and is a
favoured mounted platform for working at height. The
SOCAGE 21DJ works up to 20.3m and is a second
popular choice for many applications.
For those working in facilities management or heritage
restoration, the Easylift srl Piattaforme Aeree R360
provides a turret rotation of 360° for cleaning and
delicate work in limited spaces. Designed to work at
a height of 35.4m, it is also preferred by tree surgeons
for all aspects of arboriculture. The R260 model works to
a maximum height of 26m, with an outreach of 13.5m,
precision-designed for maintenance and installation jobs.
The Bravi Platform HD meanwhile is the default choice
for tight spaces and doorways, offering a sturdier
alternative to scaffolding or ladders.
IAS offers a full consultancy service for new customers,
to source the perfect access platform and moving
forward, offers six-monthly inspections, servicing and
maintenance, meaning you can just get on with the
job at hand.
“It is a real pleasure to hear repeat custom across many
sectors. We take great pride in customer service, from our
expert, technical know-how, to quick lead delivery times.”
“In the near future, we are hoping to begin talks with
a dealership of little truck booms. These are ideal for
a variety of one-day applications from street work,
signage, windfarms to pest control. Look out for our
Spring demo road tour round the UK! We look forward
to meeting new and existing customers then.”
The company currently has an extensive range of
used machinery for interested customers, including:

Hoists Company of the Year
Direct Hoist enters renewables market
n this issue of Building Update, we are
Ipleased to feature Direct Hoist as our Hoist
Company of the Year.
Now in its 11th year, Direct Hoist has been providing
hoists for construction since 2014. As a small, familyowned
business, Direct Hoist has over 40 years of
experience in the industry, offering competitive rates on
hoist hire, installation, servicing and repairs.
At Direct Hoist, the commitment goes far beyond simply
providing equipment – it’s about delivering longterm
value through quality, safety, and expertise, not
competing to be the cheapest. The team takes pride in
doing things right the first time, to the highest standards
and with safety always front of mind.
In addition to equipment rental, Direct Hoist offers
tailored, end-to-end solutions designed to keep a
project running smoothly and safely. From initial
consultation to installation and ongoing support,
every stage is managed by experienced specialists.
Free site visits and expert advice are given to also
ensure the right hoist is selected from the outset,
helping to avoid costly delays or mistakes.
In the construction industry, there can be ebbs and flows
when it comes to periods of high activity and periods of
relative calm that businesses experience. With factors
like economic uncertainty and supply chain issues
affecting performance, Direct Hoist has had to adapt the
business to find new avenues for continued success. We
asked Robert Wilson, Managing Director of Direct Hoist,
if he could expand on what avenues these are, “There
are new opportunities for growth in areas like renewable
energy and infrastructure projects, and with this in
mind, we have added Böcker inclined hoists to our
hire fleet following discussions with many loyal clients,
especially roofing clients.”
The Böcker inclined trailer ladder hoist is a petrolpowered,
trailer-mounted hoist that is highly
versatile. It can be used directly against
a building or scaffold, and features
a tilting basket that allows for safe
transportation of materials onto roofs.
Other key features include a
quick setup process and easy
repositioning, making it ideal for
dynamic work environments. The
system also requires a ground
space of just 5m x 5m, allowing
it to fit comfortably on most sites
without taking up excessive room.
In accordance with health and safety
regulations, hoists must be inspected annually
for goods-only use, and every six months for
passenger and goods use – or each time the hoist
is relocated. When hiring a hoist from Direct Hoist,
customers can be assured of full compliance with these
requirements and the added benefit of direct access to
one of its experienced engineers. This ensures that, in the
unlikely event of a fault, downtime is kept to a minimum.
This is where the Direct Hoist support team truly stands
out. Unlike larger companies where speaking to a
qualified engineer can take days, they fast-track their
customers straight to a technical expert and certified
hoist installer. Direct Hoist’s responsive, hands-on
approach reflects the advantage of working with a
smaller, more personable business – offering a level
of service that’s both efficient and reassuring.
To further meet the demand of its clients, we asked
Rob what does the future hold for the company, and
what are some of their long – or short-term plans,
“Keeping our current fantastic team busy and happy
is a priority whilst also increasing their knowledge
with further training. We will continue to expand and
invest in more hoists, including more Böcker
hoists for the renewables market. We
are also happy to announce that we
have now fitted solar panels to the
workshop roof, and as a result
of this, the company will be
achieving net zero in 2026!”
In closing, we asked Rob
how he felt receiving the
award, “Following on from
achieving Constructionline
Gold membership this year
and gaining Safe Contractor
Accreditation, we are very pleased
to be selected for this award and feel
it reflects our team’s hard work. We are
also seeing this open some new doors into larger
construction firms.”

Fire & Security
Smarter safety, simplified: Fircroft Technologies’
ASYRA Wireless Lockdown Alarm System
ith more than 30 years of expertise in fire and
Wsafety signalling, Fircroft Technologies Ltd has
established itself as a UK leader in the design and
manufacture of audible and visual alarm systems.
Based in South Wales, the company delivers both its
own branded solutions and bespoke OEM designs,
combining innovation, reliability, and sustainability in
every product it produces.
In a world where safety demands
are evolving faster than ever,
Fircroft Technologies is
meeting the challenge headon
with a new generation of
wireless alarm solutions.
At the heart of Fircroft’s
reputation is its commitment
to technical excellence. Its
products are designed and
manufactured to the highest
standards, with many certified
to EN54 specifications for fire
safety. Their flagship innovation, the
ASYRA Wireless System, demonstrates
this expertise in action – a dual-channel,
high-integrity wireless alarm platform that provides
dedicated lockdown, fire, and industrial safety
solutions without the need for cabling or expensive
control panels. The ASYRA Wireless System, is
setting new standards for lockdown and emergency
alert applications for construction sites and
temporary buildings.
Dedicated Lockdown Security –
Without the complexity
At the heart of Fircroft’s current focus is the
Lockdown Alarm version of the ASYRA Wireless
System – a dedicated solution purpose-built for
rapid, secure lockdown signalling. Unlike systems
that rely on existing infrastructure, ASYRA operates
as a standalone network, making it fully resilient,
hacker-proof, and independent from other building
systems. Its wireless design means there’s no
need for cabling, enabling installation over a single
weekend – a huge advantage for live sites such as
schools or operational facilities where disruption
must be minimised. The result is a reliable, easy-todeploy
system that enhances on-site safety without
compromise.
Performance and sustainability hand in hand
ASYRA’s high-output signalling technology allows
large areas to be covered with fewer devices,
cutting material use and reducing
environmental impact. Systems can
scale from just two devices to 254
units, with coverage spanning up
to 2km in diameter – ideal for
large campuses, multibuilding
sites, and
open construction
environments.
Seamlessly
linking
systems
together can
provide even
larger system
solutions.
Powered by standard AA and
CR123 batteries with lifespans
of up to four years, the system is
operated by using a mobile phone app
allowing for easy detailed reporting and
routine status monitoring. This streamlined
approach delivers significant savings in both
cost and maintenance, without sacrificing reliability
or system integrity.
Monitoring, integration and control made simple
ASYRA’s extensive fault monitoring ensures
continuous system oversight, offering real-time
reassurance that your network is always fully
operational. Thanks to universal I/O modules, the
system can be easily integrated with existing fire
or security systems if required – providing flexible
options for both standalone and hybrid applications.
For even greater convenience, the ASYRA Android
App allows users to check system status and review
event logs directly from a smartphone, eliminating
the need for expensive control panels and offering a
user-friendly interface for maintenance teams.
A complete wireless safety platform
The full ASYRA Wireless product range includes
Manual Call Points, Detectors, I/O and Fault Modules,
Sounders, and Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) – all
designed to work seamlessly together within one
cohesive system. Beyond lockdown protection,
ASYRA also supports emergency and medical alert
functions, ensuring rapid communication in any
critical situation.
Partnering for safer sites
Fircroft Technologies understands that every site
is different. That’s why they encourage customers
to discuss their specific requirements directly –
whether for a full turnkey installation or a project
managed through an approved local contractor.
Fircroft’s team provides full technical
support, ensuring the same high
standards of reliability and
performance regardless of
who installs the system.
By combining British
manufacturing quality,
cutting-edge wireless
technology, and
decades of specialist
expertise, Fircroft
Technologies continues
to set new standards in
safety system design –
making workplaces, schools,
and public spaces safer,
smarter, and more sustainable.

COVID-19 and the uncertainty of businesses staying

Maintenance in Balance
CMServices Global Ltd: At
the heart of Industry 5.0
or many industries, whilst Industry 4.0 is still
Fdominating with advancements in automation,
smart systems, robotics, big data analytics, AI, machine
learning and of course, the Internet of Things (IoT),
the focus for others is already on Industry 5.0. Defined
by the European Union as ‘placing the wellbeing of
the worker at the centre of the production process and
using new technologies to provide prosperity beyond
jobs and growth while respecting the production limits
of the planet.’ In short, we are shifting from economic
values to societal ones and embracing sustainability.
Condition monitoring is an important aspect of both
Industry 4.0 and 5.0 through the real-time tracking
of machine functionality but with the added bonus
of predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics
across a whole system.
AI now brings automated processing with faultless
accuracy, through seamless analysis of huge chunks of
data in real-time and identifying patterns proactively,
before a problem arises, such as pump cavitation. This
importantly allows on-site engineers to schedule checks
and repairs before a more costly machine failure or
malfunction occurs, later down the line, contributing
to the five Rs of the circular economy: reduce, reuse,
repair, refurbish and recycle.
CMServices Global Ltd is a market-leading
consultancy, offering AI condition monitoring to
diverse sectors from marine and offshore, automotive,
manufacturing, food and beverage, postal sorting
through to chemical, oil and gas. For decades, the
annual scheduling of manual maintenance has been
standard practice but with the advent of AI monitoring,
irregularities can be identified through early warning
prevention: smart analysis of sensor data and the
comparison to standard historical data.
The Maintenance in Balance (MiB) software service
from CMServices Global Ltd brings Machine Learning
and AI together to provide diagnostic support for
assets, through condition monitoring techniques that
identify irregularities and provide further diagnostic
guidance.
The MiB asset condition assessment software provides
a cutting-edge, integrated platform for foresighted ship
machinery maintenance and furthermore, drastically
reduces inspection and maintenance costs, up to £500
thousand per ship annually. Predictive fault monitoring
can decrease ship downtime from 7 to 1.5 days. With
existing shipping delays due to geopolitical conditions
in the Red Sea and Panama Canal, this is welcome
news for the shipping industry.
That’s not all: MiB helps shipping vessels meet
compliant seaworthy regulations, giving quality
assurance across the board. The real genius of MiB
is it supplies an extra layer of real-time prescriptive
maintenance outputs, based on accurate condition
and systems performance data and provides
next-level operational performance across safety,
regulatory, environmental and business areas.
With rising costs, the annual lifecycle costs of
operating one ship amounts to a staggering £60
million and a third of the annual budget is spent on
repair and maintenance, to keep ships buoyant and
operational. Research has found that as much as 60%
of all maintenance is in fact wholly unnecessary and
can even cause more issues going forward.
It’s no wonder then that MiB is in demand and when
we spoke to Simon, he said CMServices Global Ltd
was committed to ‘eight separate current pilot projects’
across cruise liners, container ships and oil and
gas industries, alongside a tender process in power
generation for three in Europe and two in the UK.
For more information on MiB and other
services, across any sector, please see the

MAINTENANCE IN BALANCE, THE ONLY SOFTWARE YOU’LL EVER NEED!
MiB is a product/service that builds in diagnostic support for multiple assets via Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
MiB incorporates the diagnostic knowledge of expert diagnosticians in the conventions of mature condition monitoring techniques and
aligns this with AI functionality to identify true outliers and then offer meaningful diagnostic advice.
As more assets are managed remotely and fewer onboard personnel are sufficiently experienced to deal with all scenarios, it is becoming
clear that a marriage of technology and experience is needed to balance the equation.
Objectives
Using our asset condition assessment software MIB, we will create an integrated software platform for undertaking prescriptive
maintenance on your ship’s machinery, structures, and auxiliary systems. This will be achieved by using data from existing condition
monitoring, diagnostic sensors and systems, the implementation of advanced predictive analytics and the integration of a maintenance
actions/prescription database.
Based upon advanced, artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning algorithms MIB will prescribe, the most appropriate maintenance strategy in
real-time for every asset under its control, based on the subtle but pre-alarm indications of emerging faults that will occur at a future time.
Specific objectives of MIB are to:
ä Establish the monitoring and maintenance needs of each vessel
ä Specify the software platform parameters based on each vessel’s requirements
ä Deploy our intelligent monitoring software module
ä Integrate the module into the MIB platform and provide routine updates to the crew
