THINGS
to do in Rome
THIS CHRISTMAS
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and here in Rome jolly doesn’t even begin to
explain the level of yuletide cheer and spirit you’ll feel after completing
our top ten list of Christmas must-dos.
Look out for
Christmas Trees in Rome
Nothing says Christmas quite like a traditional
decorated tree, and undoubtedly the most
symbolic one is the Christmas tree in St.
Peter’s Square. This year, the tree, a majestic
red fir, 25 meters tall, comes from Val d’Ultimo
in Trentino.
Another iconic Christmas tree in Rome is usually set up in Piazza Venezia, but this year, due to
construction work on Metro Line C, it will be moved to Piazza del Popolo and, as per tradition,
will be inaugurated on December 8.
After years signed by major fashion houses, this year no luxury brand will sponsor the
Christmas tree in the historic centre: lights and decorations are in the hands of local
shopkeepers, in collaboration with Lpgled, a company specialised in light design. The tree in
Piazza del Campidoglio will be inspired by the values of peace, while on the Spanish Steps a
12-metre ecological fir tree is planned.
Indulge in Panettone
or Pandoro
By now you have probably noticed the
colorful boxes of large round cake-bread
stacked in every available corner of Rome’s
supermarkets, pasticcerie, and even the
local “cinese.” Although it is considered
perfectly acceptable by Italian standards to
go hard on the panettone or pandoro of your
choice before, during and after Christmas, be
advised: not all panettone and pandoro were
created equal. Here are some of the best
places to purchase pandoro and panettone
in Rome:
• Le Levain, Via Luigi Santini 22/23
Via Piave, 9
• Antico Forno Roscioli, Via dei Chiavari 34
Walter Musco, Largo Bompiani 8
• Gruè, viale Regina Margherita 95/99
• Panificio Bonci, via Trionfale 34/36
• Cresci, Via Alcide de Gasperi, 11-17
• Casa Manfredi, Viale Aventino, 91/93– Via
dei Conciatori, 5
Christmas World
at Villa Borghese
After the success of previous years,
Christmas World returns once again to
Villa Borghese, and it does so in grand
style, spreading over an area of 40,000
square meters. Christmas World 2025
at Villa Borghese is a true Christmas
playground, with new attractions
designed for both children and adults.
Among the highlights are the “Snow
Twister,” a large ice slide in aquapark
style, the “North Pole Raceway” with
baby cars for the little ones, and the
sweet “Little Carousel.”

One of the best ways to spread some

for those of us who were not given the gift

would we suggest caroling around Rome
for that matter. Thankfully, the Gospel

also offer a chance to explore the Museum’s historical sections. Visitors can also admire major
Italian breakthroughs in technology and science, such as Guglielmo Marconi’s original radiotelegraphic

For the first time since
its inauguration in 1940,
the Museo del Genio -a
building covering over 4,000
square meters – reopens
to the public as a cultural
center. Also known as
the Historical Institute of
Culture and Engineering, the
museum launches its artistic
journey with two important
exhibitions: “Vivian Maier.
The exhibition” dedicated
to one of most beloved
American photographer, and
“Pop Air” by Ugo Nespolo,
presented in a national
preview, with remarkable
site specific sculptures
by the celebrated Italian
contemporary artist.
Visitors will find Maier’s
photographic exhibition
on the ground floor while
Nespolo’s inflatable
sculptures are easy to spot
in the circular courtyard
of Saint Barbara. Both
exhibitions offer an engaging
and accessible experience,
perfect for an afternoon visit
with family or friends.
Vivian Maier. The Exhibition
Over 200 colour and monochrome photographs,
legendary images, personal belongings, neverbefore-seen
documents, interactive and immersive
spaces, audio recordings, and Super 8 films will
guide the public through the world of one of the
planet’s most cherished artists, whose extraordinary
story has surprised and continues to touch millions
of visitors.
Curated by Anne Morin, the major expert on Maier’s
work and life, the exhibition offers an opportunity
to see the “American way of life” across the 1950s
to the 1990s from a different perspective: the gaze
of a full time nanny who roamed New York and
Chicago’s most popular neighbourhoods with her
Rolleiflex and the children she cared for.
Pop Air di
Ugo Nespolo
Lightness, colours and floating shapes
are at the center of Saint Barbara’s
courtyard whose tower is ranked as
the fifth tallest building in Rome. At
the Museo del Genio, Ugo Nespolo
is able to decode the symbolic and
historical setting of the institute with
humor and wit. The visual impact of
his work is simply stunning, especially
in comparison with the architectural
frame of the Institute.
Nespolo presents eight site specific
statues inspired by some of the
most visionary artists of our times –
from Pomodoro to Koons, Kusama,
Modigliani without forgetting Milo’s
Venus, Botero and Louise Bourgeois.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: a bar with
elegant French salon accents and pompous chandeliers,
and a restaurant with the coziness of a Roman trattoria.
But it’s not just the décor that’s impressive. When you
walk into Il Marchese you step inside Europe’s first Amaro
bar with more than 500 different Amaro labels.
During the recent G20 in Rome, Il Marchese had two
special customers: the American First Lady Jill Biden
and the French Première Dame Brigitte Macron. The two
ladies said they were “delighted with the lovely welcome”,
complimenting the staff and the quality of the products.
ll Marchese takes its name from the Marchese del Grillo,
a symbol of Rome’s inimitable spirit– a true gentleman,
but always inclined to irony, a lover of tradition, but also
appreciated by those who come from different cultures.
Here, with Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure to have a
fantastic dining experience. The culinary philosophy has strong Roman roots and is inspired
by traditional recipes that are lightened according to a contemporary taste, also offering
vegetarian dishes. Quality is always a priority. Ingredients are purchased from local producers.
The amaro and cocktail bar at Il Marchese pays tribute to the elegance of 19th-century
French aristocracy, with precious stuccoes, wallpapers, and velvets. The cocktails here are
perfect for an after-dinner drink or as an aperitif. Each signature drink is crafted with premium
ingredients expertly mixed. Leading the cocktail bar is Fabrizio Valeriani, a bartender with
extensive experience.

Located just a few steps away from the Vatican City,
yet hidden in a cosy street, Nakai offers something
increasingly rare in Rome’s historic center: exceptional
quality and a very welcoming venue.
The space itself reflects a commitment to being
different from the nearby trattorias. Two main dining
areas showcase clean, contemporary design, while
a soundproofed private room, Sala Kiwami, can host
groups seeking an intimate setting for special occasions
or business gatherings.
Behind Nakai stands chef and restaurateur Koji Nakai,
whose culinary journey began in Kobe following the
example of his grandfather, a professional chef. Chef
Nakai spent his early years between restaurant kitchens
and the city’s bustling fish market – an education that
encouraged both technical skill and an understanding
of ingredient quality. Growing up, Nakai specialized in Italian cuisine and decided to move to
Italy to further his knowledge. Eighteen years later, he’s still here, participating into the city’s
diverse culinary life.
Nakai’s menu brings together the best of both worlds: Japanese cooking methods using fresh
Roman ingredients. The result is a thoughtful blend of two great food traditions.
The drink menu deserves attention too. There’s a wine list with about 30 Italian options as
well as international labels, but sake is the real star here. Nakai offers over 20 different types
of sake, chosen with the help of a sommelier – sake pairing courses are also available upon
booking.

Nestled within the evocative walls of Rome lies a
sparkling jewel that has transformed the city’s nightlife:
the Conventicola degli Ultramoderni. The brainchild of the
visionary duo Mirkaccio and Madame De Freitas, this venue
is far more than a mere nightclub — it is a stage where
vaudeville meets variété, where café chantant intertwines
with cabaret, and where each evening becomes a timeless
performance. At the Conventicola, aficionados of black-andwhite
cinema, vintage allure, and songs from bygone eras
will discover their sanctuary. Every night, a dozen diverse
artists — singers, comedians, musicians, and burlesque
performers — take turns gracing the stage in a whirlwind of
elegance, wit, and theatrical flair.
Every element — from the cabaret-inspired décor to the
glimmering cushions — is meticulously curated to enchant. Yet beyond the sparkle lies an
unwavering dedication to the authenticity of the performing arts. At the Conventicola, nothing
is contrived; the talent is raw, profound, and timeless. Mirko, who rejects the term “vintage” as
a fleeting trend, pursues a deeper, enduring standard of artistic excellence.
While the spotlight is rightfully on the stage, the bar contributes with equal grace. Crafted in
homage to the great tradition of classic cocktail culture, the drinks are prepared with precision
and elegance. Every sip evokes a bygone glamour, transporting guests further into the
immersive experience. If you are seeking an experience beyond the ordinary — a plunge into
enchantment, sensuality, and the sheer beauty of live performance — the Conventicola degli
Ultramoderni awaits.

THE TREASURES OF THE PHARAOHS SPARKLE AT THE SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE
Treasures of the Pharaohs is the most
anticipated exhibition of the season, and it’s
finally lighting up the Scuderie del Quirinale
with the brilliance of three thousand years of
history.
Running until May 3, 2026, the show brings
together amulets, jewelry, and sacred objects
that trace the evolution of Egyptian civilization
through power, faith, and everyday life. Among
its highlights are the gilded sarcophagus of
Queen Ahhotep II and the famous Necklace of
Golden Flies — an ancient military honor for
bravery in battle — displayed alongside the
ceremonial collar of Psusennes I. Together,
they open a window into the world of Egypt’s
elite, where gold was not just beauty but
authority made visible.
Curated by Tarek El Awady, former director of
the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the exhibition
moves through rituals of life and death, tracing
how the Egyptians understood mortality as
transformation. The monumental sarcophagus
of Tuya, mother of Queen Tiye, anchors a
section dedicated to funerary beliefs and the
promise of rebirth. Nearby, shabti figurines,
canopic jars, and an astonishingly wellpreserved
Book of the Dead papyrus reveal
how art, science, and faith worked together to
guide the soul into the afterlife.
The show also turns its gaze toward
everyday humanity – the tombs of nobles
and artisans that illuminate the devotion,
labor, and continuity behind Egypt’s grandeur.
Among them, the gilded armchair of
Sitamun, daughter of Amenhotep III, stands
out: used in life and then placed in her
grandparents’ tomb, it speaks of affection
across generations. A section dedicated to
Amenhotep III’s “Golden City,” discovered in
2021 by archaeologist Zahi Hawass, captures
the world of the craftsmen who built the
monuments we still marvel at today.
The final rooms celebrate divine kingship,
where sculptures of Hatshepsut, Thutmose III,
and Menkaure embody both mortal presence
and godlike ideal. The exhibition culminates
in the luminous gold mask of Amenemope
– serene, perfect, eternal. Completing this
journey is a remarkable loan from Turin’s
Museo Egizio: the Mensa Isiaca, an ancient
bronze altar that symbolizes the enduring
bond between Egypt and Rome.

Piazza Santa Croce
Everyday 10am-11pm
This year, the traditional Mercatino di
Natale returns to Santa Croce square, from
November 15th to December 21st. The
Weihnachtsmarkt tradition originally came
from Germany and has been a part of the
city’s Christmas celebration for the past
500 years. Today it is still a display of color,
lights, and aromas that welcomes everyone
and celebrates the culture and products of
northern Italy and northern Europe.
Wooden cottages serve as stands that offer
a great variety of delicacies, baked goods,
ornaments, and clothing from all over. You
can find nice cups and plates to decorate,
jewellery, and precious stones that can
make the perfect gift. Good quality jackets,
socks, mittens, gloves, and scarves, to
keep you warm. Local artisan shops with
aromatic soap and perfumes, art Christmas
decors from Belarus and even a Guinness
stand for all the Irish brewery fans.
