Marble & Interiors Company Of The Year 2025

The Art of Restoration

In this issue of Building & Construction Review, we

are pleased to feature Ashton's Marble Restoration

Ltd as our Marble & Interiors Company of the Year.

appearance we filled them using resin in three

carefully selected colours to match the natural

variations within the stone. The process involved

detailed preparation, colour blending, and a

controlled application to ensure the repaired areas

integrated seamlessly with the original material.

Once cured, the surface was refined and polished to

restore a smooth, high-quality finish.”

Their comprehensive stone repair service is carried

out by experienced stonemasons who repair

cracks, chips, and areas of failing masonry using

traditional techniques that stabilise the stonework

while preserving its original character. Providing a

Ashton’s Marble Restoration Ltd is a family-run

London specialist with more than a decade of

expertise in restoring, repairing, and polishing

natural and composite stone. Working with materials

such as marble, granite, terrazzo, and limestone,

the company brings new life to floors, countertops,

façades, and other architectural features across

both residential and commercial settings.

We sat down with the company’s Director- Nicolae

Corjuc, to discuss how the last 12 months have been:

“Over the past 12 months we have successfully

delivered a consistent range of restoration

and polishing projects, reinforced our client

relationships, and further improved our on-site

planning and execution. Overall, this year has

represented stable performance and continued

development for the business.”

Ashton’s Marble Restoration provides a fullspectrum

marble restoration service, combining

advanced techniques with meticulous

craftsmanship, designed to revive and protect

high-value stone surfaces across. Their specialists

tackle everything from deep cleaning and chip

repair to grinding, honing, and precision polishing,

using professional-grade equipment to return worn

or damaged marble to its original architectural

quality. Finished with a durable sealing process that

enhances longevity and appearance, the service

ensures that stone installations not only regain their

visual impact but continue to perform reliably within

demanding built environments.

Nicolae explained a recent project where they

successfully carried out this service for a client:

“One notably challenging project involved coin

marble. The surface had multiple cavities of varying

depths, and to achieve a uniform and authentic

cost-effective solution that maintains architectural

integrity, this meticulous approach not only

revitalises the appearance of stone façades and

surfaces but also helps safeguard the long-term

performance and safety of the building itself.

Their expertise also includes precision resin repairs,

high-accuracy polishing and resurfacing, and

multi-stage sealing processes that ensure long-term

protection and durability. What sets the company

apart however, is their dedicated team who are

extremely experienced in tackling technically

demanding projects, including surfaces with

significant imperfections, intricate stone patterns, or

material inconsistencies. What’s more, every project

begins with thorough site preparation and a focus

on achieving a consistently high standard of finish

across all areas of work.

As the company remains focused on sustainable

growth, broadening its portfolio, and incorporating

new restoration technologies, their market presence

will only grow stronger as they continue to establish

their reputation for high standards of workmanship

and reliable project delivery.

In closing, we asked Nicolae how he felt receiving

the award:

“It represents a meaningful recognition of our quality,

dedication, and precision. It also reflects the trust

our clients place in our work. We take great pride

in our craft, and we remain committed to providing

clients with a reliable service, careful workmanship,

and consistently high-quality results.”

Company Of The Year 2025

Strengthening Infrastructure,

One Seal at a Time

its operational capabilities and grow

its distribution network across the

country.

We caught up with Tina, to see how

the last 12 months have been for the

company:

In this issue of Building & Construction Review,

we are pleased to feature Service Sealing

Solutions Ltd as our Sealing Systems Company

of the Year.

Based in the heart of Shropshire, Service

Sealing Solutions Ltd is a trusted leader in

high-quality utility sealing systems, supplying

innovative solutions to both public and private

sector projects across the UK. Unlike traditional

distributors, the company goes beyond supply

— providing complete support throughout

every stage of a project to ensure contractors

achieve the best outcomes in safety,

performance, and compliance.

Founded by Company Director, Tina McAra,

the business was created in response to

a growing demand for advanced sealing

technologies that safeguard buildings and

infrastructure. Recognising the opportunity

to expand nationally, Tina welcomed her

husband Jim into the company to strengthen

“The last 12 months have been

extremely positive. Inquiries are

on a parr with last year, though

our conversion rate to order

has improved. We have slightly

exceeded forecast with inquiries

and expected orders, likely to stay

strong into the early part of next

year.”

Correct sealing plays a crucial role in ensuring

that utilities such as power, water, and

communications remain accessible throughout

a building’s lifespan. Not only does this simplify

maintenance with minimal disruption, but it

also protects structures from the costly and

harmful effects of water ingress. Wherever

ducts pass through walls, floors, or ceilings,

advanced sealing systems help prevent

moisture penetration, mitigating risks of

structural decay and maintaining

the integrity of assets for the

long term.

As the exclusive UK

distributor for two of

the sealing industry’s

most respected

manufacturers —

DOYMA and HKD

— Service Sealing

Solutions Ltd delivers

premium products

engineered for durability,

watertight performance, and

compliance with the highest industry

standards. Their extensive

portfolio of sealing solutions

supports a wide range of utility

applications, offering reliability

recognised by contractors

nationwide.

“The primary range of products

we sell has an industry leading

25-year manufacturers backed

guarantee. DOYMA have had

sealing products in service since

the 1970's which continue to

perform, and we are extremely

proud to be technical partners

and distributors for DOYMA

GmbH. We also have some

exciting product launches due

for 2026!” added Tina.

One of DOYMA’s most popular products is the

DOYMAfix® which incorporates an innovative

design that guarantees simple, fast, and safe

installation of connection pipes for heat pumps.

This product is the first professional aboveground

entry for air-to-water heat pumps,

and can be installed in a short time. With this

unique system, DOYMA enables thermal to be

maintained, transmitted noise from the heat

pump is reduced and building air tightness is

assured aiding the fabric of the building

to meet Part L of UK Building

Regulations.

With personalised support,

technical expertise, and a commitment to

exceptional product quality, Service Sealing

Solutions Ltd continues to set the benchmark

for service duct sealing across the UK.

Royal London Awarded

Platinum level WELL

Certification for 80 Fen

Office Space

Royal London has achieved WELL

Certification at the Platinum level for its

colleague workspace at 80 Fenchurch

Street in London – the highest level of

certification under the WELL Building

Standard (WELL v2), as awarded by the

International WELL Building Institute

(IWBI).

The WELL Building Standard focuses

on the belief that workplaces should

be developed with people's health and

wellness at the centre of the design,

and the assessment includes over 100

criteria points. Features supporting the

certification at 80 Fenchurch Street

include the use of natural materials, such

as sustainably sourced timber and cork;

design elements that enhance physical

comfort through temperature initiatives

and lighting that mimics natural qualities;

and ‘biophilic’ features that help create

a connection to nature, considered

beneficial to reducing stress and

improving wellbeing.

There are four levels of WELL

Certification: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and

Platinum. Royal London's workspace at

80 Fenchurch Street is the fifth project

in the UK to be certified Platinum under

WELL v2.

Darren Smith, Procurement and

Workplace Director at Royal London,

said the achievement reflects a

commitment to creating healthy,

inclusive environments that support

physical and mental health, noting that

design, construction, operations, people

policies, and colleague benefits all

contribute.

Royal London worked toward the

certification with support from Overbury

and Wallace Whittle Limited.

Furniture & Interiors

Schluter® - Systems ready

for any sticky situation

It is widely known that uncoupling

membranes have become popular among

installers aiming to provide customers

with durable and stable flooring solutions,

but recent advancements are simplifying

installation and solving problems that

once caused countless call-backs,

with Schlüter®-Systems’ Peel & Stick

technology heralding a revolution in the

marketplace.

The latest addition is an advancement to

Schlüter’s original DITRA. The new DITRA

Peel & Stick maintains the uncoupling,

waterproofing, load-distribution and

vapour pressure equalisation properties

of the original, while bringing simple, clean

and quick installation, also available for

electric and hydronic underfloor heating.

While substrates must still be clean,

dust free, rigid and load-bearing, Peel &

Stick is ideal for installations over ‘green

chipboard,’ which tiling adhesive will not

adhere to. With no adhesive required,

installation is cleaner and quicker. The

membrane can be cut with a craft knife,

repeatedly repositioned, and walked on

immediately after installation.

Its speed, simplicity and versatility

appeal to contractors, builders,

bathroom specialists and DIY users, with

opportunities for offsite and bathroom

pod manufacturers. Product Manager

Andrew Saxon notes that widening the

range offers installers greater choice

and quicker, cleaner, less demanding

work, and is strongly promoted through

distributor training sessions.

The system accommodates 4mm electric

cables or water pipes within the studded,

fleece-backed membrane, providing

uncoupling, sound reduction and

targeted, controllable warmth. The Peel

& Stick range offers ideal solutions for

troublesome substrates while ensuring

lasting tile and stone installations.

Outdoor Building

Outdoor Building

David Connacher, Marketing Manager of West

Fraser, discusses how inhabitant behaviour is

integral to a building's success and performance

People spend 80-90%* of their time indoors so

internal spaces and environments are incredibly

important to quality of life and wellbeing. They

can affect mental health and may trigger allergies;

even the fact of being too hot or too cold can

influence productivity. Frustratingly, understanding

the relationship between buildings and those that

occupy them is not an exact science.

While poor indoor air quality and overheating

are well known problems,

architects, designers and

M&E consultants cannot

necessarily predict patterns of

occupant behaviour. Building

users are fickle and often

override or even tamper with

the devices and components

installed to make systems

work effectively. This can

range from the simple act

of adjusting thermostats

or air condition controls to

disconnecting devices that

they perceive to be noisy or

wasteful of energy, such as

MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation

with Heat Recovery) systems.

Poor performance also results from maintenance

being neglected, for example, ongoing servicing

and filter cleaning.

An over-reliance on technology to solve inherent

building design issues is not the answer when it

comes to creating healthy and energy efficient

buildings. While fabric first principles must always

be at the forefront of building design, they must

also be coupled with the education of building

owners and occupiers, especially when focusing

on reducing energy use.

Paradoxically, the belief that we are being efficient

tends to lead us to consume more energy. The

knowledge that lightbulbs are low energy often

means there is far less incentive to turn them off,

so the overall energy used is little different from

before. This idea that increased energy efficiency

results in increased energy consumption is widely

accepted and is dubbed the Khazzoom-Brookes

postulate. At its extreme, people may put the

money saved on energy in their home towards

overseas holidays involving flying - hardly the most

sustainable option.

End Of Year Review

Joint managing

directors acquire

Frameclad

Light steel specialist Frameclad

announced that, following a transitional

period, Joint Managing Directors

Nicholas Teagle and Martin Jamieson

have acquired the company from

founder Mark Munns and his wife Diane.

In 2022, they were invited to become

joint Managing Directors as the founder

planned to step back from daily

operations. Over the past two years,

they worked collaboratively to ensure a

smooth handover.

"We are excited to share that this

transition is complete, and we have

officially acquired Frameclad," said

HVAC installations, incl. hot water sealed-system

boilers and unvented cylinders, require discharge

devices for P/TRVs (Pressure/Temperature Relief

Valves). Critical for compliance, safety, efficiency

and maintenance. The hotun® dry-trap tundish

with the hotun detect® audible/visual alarm unit

sets a new standard for best practice.

You can terminate to an internal waste or soil

pipe and you will need a tundish followed by a

trap:

▲ A wet trap will dry out then toxic fumes can

enter a living space.

▲ A membrane trap is a great solution but it takes

up space, is expensive and you cannot see

inside should it be blocked or fail.

The hotun® dry trap tundish is your best

practice option:

▲ Smallest solution in class (from 73mm between

pipes) with comprehensive options (size, colour,

fittings, etc);

▲ World first patented hot water solution,

award winning, accepted for use by major

manufacturers (e.g., Worcester Bosch, Vaillant,

Ideal, Ariston, OSO and many more)

▲ Independently tested and approved, also flowrate

tested

Teagle. "We plan to build on

the success Mark and Diane

achieved, continuing our longterm

strategy of ‘investment

and innovation.’ There will be no

major changes in management,

output, or procedures, and

delivering high-quality light

steel frame systems remains

our priority."

Martin added: "We thank

our team for their incredible

support. People are at the

heart of our operation, and we look

forward to growing relationships with

clients, partners, and suppliers while

delivering cost-effective, safe light steel

solutions."

In line with Frameclad's strategy,

following the launch of the Lightweight

Engineered Adjustable Frame (LEAF),

the new owners purchased five

additional cold-roll forming machines

and expanded their design and

engineering team from 12 to 14.

A new design to honour

'the paras'

Yorkshire-based manufacturer ACS

Stainless Steel Fixings is raising

money for the Army Benevolent

Fund (ABF) again this autumn with its

fourth annual steel Silhouette Soldiers

Remembrance Day campaign.

The 2024 initiative aims to raise

more funds with a new order system

inviting donations in exchange for a

free steel soldier, created in a brandnew

design honouring ‘The Paras’.

The design was unveiled at an ABF

event in Liverpool; ABF is the national

charity of the British Army, supporting

soldiers, veterans and families.

ACS has created over 630 soldiers

since 2021, distributed across UK

Mainmark: The first-choice ground engineering and

asset preservation partner

Subsidence presents one of the most

underestimated and costly risks to properties and

infrastructure, spotting it can reduce excessive

repair costs and even irreversible damage to vital

structures.

Subsidence is the gradual sinking or shifting

of the ground, can cause cracks in walls and

floors, collapsing foundations, uneven surfaces

and compromised structural integrity. When left

untreated, its effects only worsen, often leading to

more expensive repairs and in severe cases, the

collapse of structures.

Cracks, uneven floors, doors and windows

sticking, sagging or sinking foundations, and

persistent pooling water are all early indicators of

ground movement.

Mainmark Ground Engineering (UK) Ltd has three

decades’ experience and has established itself

as a pioneering force in the industry, developing

and delivering cutting-edge solutions. The

firm provides ground improvements and level

correction methods allowing Mainmark to raise,

Synergie

Airtightness

System

If you specify and install the Synergie

Airtightness system, you will get all of the

following benefits:

Synergie Airtightness System

Benefits:

▲ Removes Draughts

▲ Cuts Heating Bills

▲ Prevents condensation

▲ Protects and improves the

performance of your thermal

insulation

▲ Protects from damage caused by

mould – Health Benefits

▲ Ventilation system works more

efficiently

▲ Lower CO2 emissions

▲ Helps lock out odours, noise and

unpleasant summer heat

▲ Safe and quick to install

▲ Environmentally friendly

▲ No harmful toxins or solvents

▲ Helps attain good Building Energy

Rating (BER)

▲ Helps increase the value of your

property

Remove Draughts:

Research shows that up to half of all

heat loss in buildings can be due to

uncontrolled ventilation and air leakage

through the external fabric of the

building envelope. Despite increased

insulation values due to improved building

regulations, warm air can leak out and

cold air can still enter through joints in the

building fabric in the form of draughts.

The main air leakage points that attention

should be paid to are:

▲ Joints between walls, roofs and

ceilings

▲ Joints between foundation and wood

structure in timberframe

▲ Overlaps and interruption of

membranes

▲ Joints between walls and window/

door frames

▲ Penetrations in the external envelope

– pipes, cables etc.

▲ Unplastered blockwork, such as

between intermediate timber floor

joists

A well installed airtightness system is the

control of this air leakage.

Abloy Academy breaks

records amid growing

access control training

demand

Abloy UK has achieved record-breaking

attendance at its Academy, with more

professionals than ever attending training

courses to enhance their knowledge

of access control standards and

compliance.

Between January and April 2025, the

Academy welcomed 188 attendees to

its Foundations course—more than the

161 trained during the whole of 2024.

Attendance has more than doubled

compared to the same period last year,

rising from 72 to 188.

In response to demand, Abloy has

added extra course dates. This increase

demonstrates industry awareness of the

importance of access control compliance

and the need for ongoing training to keep

up with developments in standards.

The Academy offers a range of training

options, with the Foundations course

providing insight into legislation and

standards including EN 179, EN 1125,

EN 13637 and BS 7273. Sessions are

tailored for security installers, specifiers,

architects, facilities managers and end

users.

Founded in 2009, the Academy has

long advocated for compliant electronic

locking systems over non-compliant

electromagnetic solutions. Legislative

developments, including the Construction

Products Regulation and its UK

counterpart, have helped align the market

with Abloy’s standards-driven message.

Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at

Abloy UK and the Academy’s pioneer,

Head of Learning Strategy at Joblogic.

“By anticipating these peaks, firms can

optimise scheduling and deliver more

reliable service.”

Rethinking Winter Safety

in a Sustainable Built

Environment

As the construction industry continues

its shift toward safer, cleaner and

more sustainable practices, winter

maintenance is an area undergoing quiet

but meaningful innovation. Traditional

rock salt, long relied upon for ice control,

is increasingly under scrutiny for its

corrosive impact on concrete, metal

and surrounding ecosystems. EcoGrit,

a UK-based specialist in eco-friendly

de-icing solutions, is offering a compelling

alternative.

EcoGrit’s flagship de-icer is produced

using by-products from the cereal

industry and includes a processed form

of salt that delivers high performance

without the corrosive effects of

conventional de-icing salt. The result is

a biodegradable and non-toxic solution

that is safe for pets, plants, waterways,

and infrastructure alike. More than just

environmentally responsible, the product

is also highly effective, remaining active

at temperatures as low as –20 °C —

significantly outperforming conventional

salt.

For construction sites, developers and

facilities managers, the benefits are clear.

Reduced corrosion means longer-lasting

concrete, fewer repairs to metal fixtures,

and less damage to drainage systems

and surrounding landscapes. Longer

residual performance also means fewer

applications and improved site safety

during prolonged cold spells.

In an industry where sustainability is no

longer optional but essential, EcoGrit

demonstrates how practical innovation

can protect people, projects and the

planet. By rethinking something as routine

as winter gritting, EcoGrit is helping

redefine best practice across the built

environment.

CITB strengthens

commitment to

ensuring that the Levy

system operates fairly

The Construction Industry

Training Board (CITB) has

reinforced its commitment to

ensuring fairness in the Levy

system with new measures to

address the practice of passing

on the Levy to subcontractors.

The move reflects collaboration

between CITB, the Levy Strategy

Committee, three Nation

Councils, and 14 Prescribed

Organisations to protect industry

equity.

CITB has launched an anonymous online

reporting platform for subcontractors

affected by Levy deductions. Reports

are confidential, and CITB can follow

up with contractors to request that

improper deductions cease. This initiative

aims to better understand the scale of

the practice and uphold the integrity of

the Levy system, which funds training

and skills development across the

construction sector.

Deb Madden, Executive Director of

Nations Engagement at CITB, said:

“Passing the Levy down the supply

chain reduces investment in workforce

development and undermines its

purpose. We need support from Levypaying

employers to provide long-term

career opportunities and grow a skilled

workforce.”

CITB encourages industry selfregulation

Vert: the red-oak route to

a cooler, greener city

AHEC, Diez Office and OMC°C unveil

modular urban-cooling structures for

London Design Festival

With temperatures rising and heatwaves

set to intensify, coupled with dwindling

biodiversity, there is an urgent need to

rethink urban development. In a three-way

collaboration between Diez Office, the

American Hardwood Export Council

(AHEC), and urban greening specialists

OMC°C, Vert is an experimental modular

structure addressing both issues.

Unveiled at Chelsea College of Art

during London Design Festival, Vert is a

timber structure that cools the city while

integrating into existing infrastructure.

Tall sails covered in climbing plants fix

CO 2 , provide shade, and create sheltered

spaces. Built from sustainable red oak

glulam, Vert combines aesthetic appeal

with environmental benefits, featuring a

decked floor in thermally modified red

oak.

The triangular design supports

biodegradable nets for climbing

plants, allowing modularity, structural

robustness, and wind resistance. Vert is

projected to cool surrounding air by up

to 8ºC, cast four times more shade than

a 20-year-old tree, and produce as much

biomass as an 80-year-old lime tree.

This collaboration merges AHEC’s

timber expertise, Diez Office’s design,

and OMC°C’s urban-greening

knowledge, offering a multifunctional,

climate-adaptive solution that enriches

biodiversity, creates human-friendly

urban spaces, and showcases the

structural and environmental potential of

red oak.
