One of the most important meetings

of my 23 years in Cape May

happened in the bathroom of the

pool bar at Congress Hall during

the summer of 2002. That’s when

I was introduced to a young Latvian man

named Aleksey Moryakov. I met him

through his younger brother Leo, whose job

at that time was gathering all of the used

towels from Congress Hall customers on

the beach and around the pool, and getting

them laundered. At the time, I was manager

of the pool bar, a role I performed with

a fairly consistent level of mediocrity.

These days, Leo’s job is mixing drinks

and pouring wine and beer for customers

at the Ebbitt Room at The Virginia hotel,

where he’s been holding court for two

decades.

As for Aleksey, maybe you heard that

he ended up being the photographer for this

little rag you are holding in your hands (or

reading online!). It’s a job he’s been doing

for 20 years, and I’m paying tribute to him

this week by calling this the Photo Issue

and running an interview with him (pages

10-12). Aleksey is probably the most reliable,

diligent and efficient person I’ve ever

worked with (although I need to add that

my office colleague Kayla Jordan is right up

there, too). The fact that Aleksey always has

a smile on his face doesn’t hurt, either.

I’ve been asking Aleksey to shoot jobs

ever since April of 2005. In that whole time,

he’s only ever said no because he was either

shooting a wedding or traveling abroad

(usually back to Riga, Latvia). Not once has

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

he said he’s not feeling well or has something

else going on. Not once has he failed

to answer a call or text. It’s unbelievable,

really, especially since I’ve endured 10 years

of the restaurant business, which must

attract the most unreliable people of all, the

type of folks who think they should receive

a medal for turning up five days in a row,

and who think nothing of failing to show up

for work without so much as a call or even

a pathetic little text (and yet will actually

walk into work the next day and expect that

everything will be just dandy). Anyway, I

digress. Aleksey is a force of nature, possibly

from a dying breed (though I hope I’m

wrong about, ahem, the youth of today).

If I hadn’t met Aleksey, I would likely

be on to my 15th photographer by now, and

no doubt we would miss half of the jobs

we were hoping to cover. In this season

of being thankful and all that good stuff,

I’m extremely glad he swept and mopped

his way into my life back in the summer

of 2002. His younger brother’s not so bad,

either. I hope to see you at the Ebbitt Room

bar soon, Leo.

I spent Saturday evening riding a float

³ with the wife and kid for Stone Harbor

and Avalon schools. The occasion was the

Stone Harbor Christmas Parade, which is

to the West Cape May version what David is

to Goliath. My wife prefers her parades on

the smaller side, with the fire truck quotient

at a very manageable handful, as opposed to

the 325 which turn up on our island. As for

me, I’m looking forward to this Saturday’s

Big Kahuna and am already plotting how I

can drive home in less than two-and-a-half

hours. There is still time for you to donate

to the West Cape May Christmas Parade,

and there really is a need for it. I’m glad to

say there is now a giant DONATE button on

their home page (westcapemay.us) so get

on there and add your two cents, or $50.

As I write, I’m preparing, for the second

time, to take a trip to Manhattan so the kid

can see The Lion King on Broadway. (He’s a

big theater fan but has never been to NYC

before.) I say “second time” because our

first trip had to be abandoned after I spilled

boiling hot water over the most vulnerable

part of a man’s body (while I was attempting

to make tea), suffering second-degree

burns. After two weeks of extremely painful

rehabilitation, my manhood is once

again intact, I’m pleased to say. And, yes, I

am still making myself hot tea. Some things

are impossible to give up.

Maybe I’ll see you at the Christmas

parade. Enjoy!

Q&A

Aleksey Moryakov, The Man

Behind The Lens At Exit Zero

It’s the Photo Issue, so Jack Wright chatted with Aleksey

Moryakov, who first picked up a camera for this magazine

20 years ago. The rest is Cape May photographic history.

When did you first arrive in Cape May? It

was June of 2002. One of my friends in Latvia had

been in the US to work the previous summer and it

sounded like a great idea. I would rather spend the

summer making money in the US than just going to

the beach every day in Latvia.

So this was the J1 work program. Had you ever

been in the US before? No. This was my first time.

We flew from Latvia to JFK, spent the night somewhere

in New York then got the bus to Wildwood,

where we were staying for the summer.

So you only stayed in New York for one night?!

Yeah, but we went back to visit a couple times.

So what was the job you had? I worked the

night shift stacking shelves from 11 to 7 at ShopRite

in Rio Grande. Then I quickly got another job at

Congress Hall. I think I worked from 3-11 at Congress

Hall, then went to ShopRite. And I biked

everywhere! I had no idea there were buses.

From Wildwood to Cape May then back to Rio

Grande every day. That’s a lot of miles. I know, tell

me about it!

What job did you do at Congress Hall? Houseman.

Basically cleaning the floors, and changing

the bags in the trash cans.

That’s when I met you for the first time. I was

managing the pool bar at Congress Hall and you

were cleaning the floors of the toilets. Yeah, like 23

years ago, it’s crazy.

What did you study in Latvia before coming

here? Electrical engineering, with a master’s

degree in environmental engineering. Crazy, right?

Were you always interested in photography,

though? Yeah. My dad used to be photographer for

a newspaper and my grandad was a photographer

for the army during World War Two.

When were you born? In 1980.

So, the Berlin Wall was still up, and you were a

Communist! Ha-ha, no, I was never a Communist!

I guess I was about eight or nine when the Soviet

Union started to fall apart. I remember Soviet tanks

in the street and lots of shooting.

Do you remember Latvia regaining its independence?

Yeah, I do. It was 1991. It was scary, a lot

of uncertainty at the time.

How often do you go back to Latvia? I try once

a year, but it’s difficult with the two kids.

What would people from Cape May enjoy

about the capital city, Riga? The whole town is

beautiful, very historic. It’s beautiful right now —

you know, Riga was the first place in the world to

have a Christmas market!

I did a Google check, and it wasn’t the first

Christmas market but it WAS the first place to

have a public Christmas tree, in 1510 apparently.

Oh, okay, I was almost correct.

How did you get the job at Exit Zero? I think

it was back in April of 2005. Someone from your

office called and asked if I could take a couple pictures

at the Pilot House because the regular photographer

wasn’t available any more.

Why did we ask you? I honestly can’t recall.

You knew that I had a camera — you had seen me

with it at Congress Hall and I told you I had started

taking some pictures.

continued from page 10

In those early days, did a lot of people

refuse to have their pictures taken, maybe

not knowing what Exit Zero is? No, not

really. That’s never been much of a problem. I

mean, sometimes even today people will say

they don’t want their picture taken because

they’re with someone they’re not supposed

to be with!

Has anyone ever asked you out on a date

while you were shooting? Oh, many times.

Most recently about two weeks ago at Congress

Hall and this girl was like, “Come have

a drink with me.” And I’m like, first of all, I’m

on the job. And I’m married with kids. She’s

like, “That’s okay, come have some champagne.”

I had to walk away. It used to happen

a lot, back in the day.

Did you ever say yes? Back in the day,

sure! That was a long, long time ago.

What is the best thing about being Exit

Zero photographer? Everyone is alway so

happy to see you. And you’re usually surrounded

by people in a good mood. It’s

always positive.

What’s the worst thing about being the

Exit Zero photographer? Having to be in

five places at once and, in July, trying to find

parking. I have my ways and my secret places

to park, but it’s becoming really tough.

You’ve been our photographer for 20

years. How many more years before you

retire? I don’t know. I guess as long as I can

keep moving.

When did you start doing weddings?

Back in 2017. Before that, I used to help Tim

Joyce and Mary Pat Myers with their weddings,

and I learned a lot of stuff from them.

I’m still doing weddings and family photos

on the beach in the summer, almost every

night. Sometimes in the morning, too.

How many weddings do you shoot every

year? My biggest year I did about 80 and I

would never want to do it again. I almost

killed myself. These days, it’s usually around

30-35.

Are they always in Cape May? Oh no.

I’ve shot weddings in California and Mexico,

and I have one in Baltimore next year.

What do you do when you’re not shooting

photography? I’m pretty much taking

pictures every day, except in January, which

is when I like to reorganize my stuff. In the

summer, though, I will try to make time to go

to the beach a lot.

Do you have a favorite beach? I like

Broadway and behind Convention Hall — I

discovered that they call that the Bulgarian

Riviera!

Have you noticed big changes in Cape

May in the 23 years you’ve been here? Oh,

yeah, a lot of changes. Some I like, some I

don’t. I prefer to see families running their

own businesses and when you come to the

business, you see them and say hello. But

I think these days, Cape May is becoming a

little more corporate and in danger of losing

its soul.

Got any exciting travel plans? I want to

go back to Japan. I loved it there. And I want

to go to Fiji and Spain. I would love to be able

to travel two, three times a year if I could.

What would be your last meal on earth?

That’s such a strange question. I don’t want

to think about that. I want to live till I’m 100.

Okay, but you still have to answer it.

Everybody does. If I have to cook it myself,

I’ll make myself a steak or a swordfish. If I

go out, I would have sushi from Port, if they

are still in business when I’m 100. Or halibut

from Washington Inn or Peter Shields.

Dear Answer Lady

I very much want to enjoy the West

Cape May Christmas Parade. I have always

gone house to house along the parade and

enjoyed a cocktail or two along the way.

I also intend to go to Congress Hall and

enjoy the tree-lighting ceremony. I’ll see a

lot of friends at both these events. The difference

is that I now realize I have a history

of enjoying cocktails way too much and six

months ago swore off the stuff. How do I

resist the temptation and not be pressured

by good-intentioned friends who want to

buy me a drink? — Teetotaler

Answer Lady thinks the solution to traveling

house to house is easy — ask for a soft drink.

You can share that you are cutting back on

the booze without going into detail. Otherwise,

just say a soda will be good. As to Congress

Hall, order a Virgin Bloody Mary. It

looks festive. Your friends can buy you one if

they insist, but make sure they understand

the “virgin” part. Bonus, it’s pretty healthy.

Dear Answer Lady

My mother died earlier this year. Dad

died a couple of years ago. Mom always

hosted Christmas. She was Martha Stewart

on steroids and my dad not far behind. He

could make a mean Old Fashioned. Thanksgiving

we ate at Hemingway’s, but we want

Christmas to be in one of our homes. There

are five of us and we are going back and forth

about who should host. We all inherited our

parents’ love of entertaining. How do we

settle this so there are no hurt feelings? —

Holiday Hosts

Dear Hosts

Put your names in a hat and pick out all

the names and decide who’s next based in

order of selection. That way, you’ll be set

for a few years. Or... pick a host but all the

siblings can contribute. Not quite pot luck.

The host would supply the main entrée. The

other brothers and sisters contribute the

rest, and you decide collectively the menu.

Make sure someone stops at Sunset Liquors

and brings the Old Fashioned components.

CHRISTMAS CHEER!

Sunday, December 14 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm

The story unfolds on Christmas Eve

when a kind young woman, new

to the neighborhood, attempts to

return a misdelivered package, and

in doing so, meets her elderly neighbor

experiencing a quiet loneliness. What

begins as a small act of kindness blossoms

into a shared adventure as they try to fulfill

his one Christmas wish: to catch Santa

Claus.

The simplicity of that premise belies the

emotional depth of the play: it’s about connection,

trust, vulnerability and believing

in something bigger than ourselves. Right

from the opening moments, the chemistry

between the two leads is unmistakenable.

They bring authenticity and warmth to

their characters, and their evolving relationship

carries an emotional weight that

genuinely moved me.

As their trust builds and their shared

sense of wonder grows, I found myself

swept up in their hope, laughter, and rediscovery

of child-like belief.

Visually, the production sparkles and

the stage feels alive and festive. In this inti-

mate theater setting, the creative set design

and holiday lighting craft a cozy, magical

world with a shimmering glow, warm

windows of the neighborhood home, and

touches of whimsy that evoke a nostalgic

Christmas Eve. Every detail transports the

audience directly into a moment of holiday

wonder.

At its core, Let’s Catch Santa delivers a

message that resonates deeply: the idea of

believing in something bigger than yourself;

opening your heart, to genuine connection,

and embracing hope even when loneliness

or doubt creeps in. Watching these two

characters go on this journey together is a

great reminder that when we believe, miracles

can feel within reach. That message

of hope, magic, and connection stayed with

me long after the curtain fell.

Let’s Catch Santa is a holiday triumph

filled with heart and hope. It’s funny, tender,

and magical, and it reminds us all why the

holiday season matters. The show put me

in the Christmas spirit, and I left the theater

smiling and humming a holiday tune.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking

for a Christmas experience that’s genuine

and uplifting. And if you need a reason to

believe in Santa again, you just might find

that too..

Written by Dan McCormick and

directed by Roy Steinberg, Let’s Catch Santa

runs now through December 28, with performances

Wednesday through Saturday at

7pm and Sunday at 3 pm. Tickets are available

When Europeans first landed on

these shores, “bustards,” as wild

turkeys were mistakenly called,

were common. But by the mid-

1800s, they were gone from New

Jersey, the victims of unregulated hunting

and deforestation. By the 1970s a few wild

birds from Pennsylvania had reestablished

in northwestern New Jersey, but it wasn’t

until active NJ-based reintroduction efforts

began, in 1977, that wild turkey populations

rebounded.

Flocking birds, turkeys spend much of

their time on the ground, foraging for acorns

and other nuts. When searching for tubers,

the birds can turn a lot of soil in a garden but

remain for the most part in woodlands and

adjacent fields where males gather to display

for females as early as March. At night, the

birds take to the safety of trees, perching as a

flock above the leap range of coyotes.

While not aggressive, the males have

been known to attack their reflections in car

hubcaps and well-polished car doors. And

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

I am aware of one bird tour leader who was

gored in the thighs by a displaying male ocellated

turkey, a Central American relative of

our bird. Trying to shoo the displaying bird off

the road, the guy made the mistake of turning

his back on the hormonally fueled bird.

It should be noted that the regal turkey

was likely not the celebratory centerpiece at

that first thanksgiving feast between the Pilgrims

and Wampanoag people in 1621. More

likely it was the then common (now extinct)

Heath Hen that served as the feast’s centerpiece.

It wasn’t until 1863, when Lincoln proclaimed

the last Thursday in November a day

of Thanksgiving to celebrate the Union victory

at Gettysburg, that the turkey assumed

celebratory status. What you may have heard

about Benjamin Franklin’s advocacy of turkey

as our national bird over Bald Eagle is apparently

false. The myth seems to stem from a

letter to his daughter in which he extolls the

noble virtues of the turkey while vilifying the

low character of the eagle.

While a noble bird, the handsome

bronze-colored fowl is better represented on

a platter surrounded by dressing, cream-pearl

onions and baked sweet potato than superimposed

upon a presidential podium. And while

Thanksgiving has become a battleground

pitting family members of differing political

persuasions against each other, in our house

the only battle is the one waged between

white meat vs dark. More gravy always solves

the problem.

It’s easy to get caught up in “the way we’ve

always done it” at holiday time, but some

traditions are newer than we realize.

Although December gift giving predates

Christianity — the early Romans

exchanged gifts during Saturnalia, after all

— the details change. Queen Victoria’s gifts

weren’t wrapped, and Santa didn’t visit her

kids.

The “something you want, something

you need, something to wear and something

to read” notion sounds like something Ma

Ingalls might have espoused, but it gained

traction on early 2000 parenting blogs. The

Icelandic people have an ancient story-loving

history, but the Christmas Book Flood,

or Jolabokafloo, is relatively recent. It began

because paper wasn’t rationed during World

War II. The “Yankee swap” or “white elephant”

gift exchange probably dates to about

1890 but game moved to the workplace in the

middle of the twentieth century, and now is

often conducted completely online.

Your gift traditions can also change.

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there and enjoying this island

Start or end a grab bag. Cut off the adults, or

don’t. Add a dollar limit — the spirit remains

the same. For the littlest, consider experiences,

like a trip to the zoo or to play mini

golf, perhaps conveniently timed to allow

Santa to wrap gifts. The Gen Z folks embrace

sustainability, so they, too, welcome experiences

— consider tickets to Cape May

is anti-tech — the “Brick” which disables

time-wasting apps for a set period. Show

your reading friend you were listening when

she bemoaned the end of her book series —

introduce her to a new series, preferably one

with many, many books. For the beach lovers

in your life, consider upgrading that rusty

beach chair, or adding a basket to the trusty

beach bike — try the Beach and Kite Shop on

the way into town on Route 109.

Seniors, meanwhile, might appreciate

a payment on a subscription, 2026 seasonal

beach tags, or a house cleaning or landscaping

service.

ICHABOD is two months old and under

three pounds. He was found alone at a trailer

park and brought to the shelter for some

much needed TLC. His eye was ruptured

when he arrived and he is scheduled to have

it surgically fixed at the end of December. It

would be ideal for him to be adopted before

surgery so he can recover in his new home.

SQUID spent many years living at a campground,

being chased away. He was found

hungry and injured. It is believed he was once

a domestic cat that had to become “feral” for

survival. Squid has FIV and suffers a viral

infection called Stomatitis. It is treatable an

Squid is doing great. All he needs now is to

find a quiet, kind, loving home.

SKITTLES is a friendly and affectionate cat

who loves having a companion nearby. She

enjoys gentle attention and settles in quickly

with people she trusts. This adorable girl is

house-trained and easy to care for. With her

vaccinations up to date and already spayed,

Skittles is ready for her forever home. Contact

DUKE was surrendered when his previous

He would do best in an adult home with

HONEY B is a shy girl who came to the shelter

when her owner could no longer care

for her. Now she spends her days watching

people pass by her kennel. Honey B wags

her tail softly when it’s time to go outside

and explores the yard with curiosity.

She would do best in a calm home with older

children and a peaceful routine.

ARROW is searching for a new home after

being left with a family member by his previous

owner. He lived happily with a woman

and her six-year-old grandson, who adored

him but could not keep him long term. Arrow

has lots of energy, is easy to harness, and

walks nicely on a leash. He will thrive with

someone who can keep him busy.

Are your house guests gone yet? Did

you give them all kinds of hints

they didn’t take? I got news for you.

Frank and Betty are not leaving!

Hey, here’s an idea. Go see a movie

without inviting them! There’s plenty to

see. Wicked for Good, Zootopia 2, and the third

installment of a franchise you didn’t want:

Now You See Me, Now You Don’t. All three are

being well received.

The other strategy is to stay home and

play a movie that is terrible, but that makes

you have to sit through something unwatchable.

So here is a movie that’s quite good but

may have your guests scratching your heads

asking themselves why you chose it.

The only reason I watched last year’s

The Good Half is because of its mixed scores

on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave it a 96.

Hello, that’s a 96, pretty impressive. Critics

gave it a score of 48, a big-time splat. You

know what that means. I’m probably going

to like it, even love it. And, indeed, I did rate

it pretty high.

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

The movie stars Nick Jonas — yep, from

the poppy band Jonas Brothers. I like their

music, some of it’s really catchy. But can he

act? It turns out he really can. He plays Ren,

a struggling comedy writer in LA. But it’s

the first scene that captured me and didn’t

let me go for the rest of the movie.

Ren, as a young boy (played beautifully

by Mason Cufari), sits sulking in the car

with his mother, played by Oscar-nominated

Elisabeth Shue. She is begging for

his forgiveness because she left him abandoned

in a mall. This hit a nerve for me, as

I lost my daughter Aly in a mall when she

was little for just a few seconds. It was hell

for me. Eventually, young Ren forgives his

mother, but makes her pinky swear that she

will never leave him in the mall again. Actually,

he makes her pinky swear that she will

never leave him. Like ever.

Heaven help me, I just had to grab a couple

tissues. You know what happens next.

In the very next scene, a grown-up Ren

(Jonas) receives the phone call. His mother

has died after a battle with cancer. He needs

to fly back to Cleveland and face his stepfather,

as well as his sister who has been caring

for his mother all along.

So this may not be the lightest movie to

watch, but it has its laughs — and ultimately

it’s an outstanding relationship flick.

And your houseguests might actually

not get it…and leave.

Hey, it’s a win-win!
