Next week, Ian Telfer will be back doing what he loves
most – being Santa. The 84-year-old has been Father
Christmas since 1963, still wearing the same suit his
mother-in-law stitched for him. On pages 4-5, Ian talks to
reporter Kees Chalmers about living the Santa life.
Couple left distraught after
beloved pet ram stolen
BY KEES CHALMERS
A couple is devastated after
their beloved pet ram, Bo, was
stolen from a paddock in Little
River.
Witnesses reported seeing
three men in a red sedan at
about 3pm on Friday, wrangling
the animal, with
one having a distinctive
bun-style
haircut.
Kathrine Calder-Ritchie
and
her husband said
it was believed Bo
was lifted over a
padlocked gate
and put in the
car’s boot.
“It just makes
Kathrine
Calder-Ritchie
me so angry and so upset. He
just doesn’t deserve that and I
really want these assholes to get
found,” she said.
The couple has had Bo since
his birth three years ago.
“He was such a nice pet
sheep, I would go talk to him
and go pat him and he’d come
up and be happy to see me.
“I don’t have any kids so he
was like my child. It’s really
heartbreaking,” she said.
The couple live on a farm in
Springston but are set to move
to Little River in two weeks
If you have any information on the incident or the whereabouts of Bo, contact
kees.chalmers@alliedmedia.co.nz
with their seven sheep, eight
former racehorses, and two
miniature horses.
Calder-Ritchie, a vegetarian,
treats her farm animals like
pets.
“If they can't find a decent
home, unfortunately they don’t
always get a good outcome,” she
said of the racehorses.
They moved the animals to
their new property on Puaha
Rd about a month ago while
they tidy their current home
before the settlement date in
two weeks.
Calder-Ritchie had moved all
the animals to higher ground.
Bo, who has bad knees and is
overweight, was fenced off in a
lower paddock as a diet area for
him and was even introduced
to a new sheep, Manuka, for
company.
About 10am on Saturday,
Calder-Ritchie went to check on
her animals and noticed Bo was
missing.
Knowing he could not have
escaped alone, she realised he
had probably been stolen and
contacted police.
She also posted on local Facebook
community groups, even
offering a $1000 reward for his
return.
Bo and Manuka were the only
sheep visible from the road,
leading Calder-Ritchie to suspect
Bo was targeted because
of his mobility issues. As it is
not currently breeding season,
she believes he may have been
taken for meat.
Community members have
come forward with tips.
A motorist said they were
dangerously passed by a red
sedan while driving towards
Akaroa.
Police are investigating CCTV
footage from the area about
3pm on Friday.
Despite the ordeal, Calder-
Ritchie said the community’s
support has been heartening.
Firefighter raises nearly
$10,000 for Movember
Akaroa firefighter Blake Thomson
has raised $9475 for Movember.
Thomson spent 24 hours over
breathing apparatus at the Akaroa
fire station.
are planning to build six to eight
‘I don’t believe I should be getting
BY KEES CHALMERS
Ian Telfer is preparing to take
on Santa duties for yet another
festive season – 62 years after
he first put on the iconic redand-white
coat.
It all began on Labour
weekend in 1962. Ian and his
parents, William and Jesse,
were staying at their holiday
house in Tikao Bay, which Ian
and his father had built seven
years earlier.
He met a girl on the beach
and the attraction was immediate
and mutual. By New Year’s,
they were a couple. That girl
later became his wife and the
mother of his two children. Ian
and Ally were married for 51
years before she died in 2017
from a pulmonary embolism.
Ian can’t remember exactly
what he said to her that first
day – only that “he was very
complimentary”.
Ian, now 84, taught her to
swim and water ski, while she
tried to teach him to dance,
“neither with much success”.
“I met this bird on the beach
and my life changed,” he said.
The following November,
while staying with Ally’s family,
he was handed a brown parcel
from his mother-in-law, Dulcie
Comfort. Inside was a red and
white coat Dulcie had handstitched
for him – without his
knowledge.
"She said, ‘there we go, you’re
Santa for family Christmas’,”
Ian said.
“I was a 16-stone prop, being
Father Christmas was nothing
I’d ever thought of.”
He argued his beard was
“black as spades” and he
couldn’t possibly play the iconic
figure, but Dulcie had anticipated
that too. She made him a
false beard to cover it.
“She had me right under her
little finger,” Ian said.
The scale of the Comfort family
Christmases was a shock to
Ian, who had grown up as an
only child. Dulcie was one of 12
children and Ally’s father, Ernie,
was one of 11.
“There were aunts and uncles
and cousins and whatnot coming
out the woodwork in all
directions,” he said.
“But, you know, I had a ball. I
thoroughly enjoyed myself.”
The next year he was roped
in again, this time to play Santa
for the family’s church – and
Ian and his late wife Ally met on at Tikao Bay in 1962. “I met this bird on the beach and my life changed forever,” he said.
“I was a 16-stone prop,
being Father Christmas
was nothing I’d ever
thought of.”
Ian Telfer
the gig grew from there.
Since then, he has impersonated
Father Christmas all over
the country at work parties,
playcentres, schools, and family
photoshoots, never charging a
cent.
“I don’t believe I should be
getting paid for having so much
fun.
“I just enjoy seeing the joy on
people’s faces.”
Ian still wears the same suit
Dulcie made in 1963 and insists
it has never been washed.
“I’m terrified if I wash it, the
thing will fall apart,” he said.
He dreams of reaching 70
years as Saint Nick. Mentally he
feels up to it, but physically he’s
less confident.
He is blind in one eye and
partially blind in the other, and
three years ago he fell down his
outdoor steps and broke 10 ribs.
When he eventually hangs
up his duties, he won’t be retiring
the coat – he plans to pass
it on to one of his great-grand
nephews.
Ian has played Santa at
Akaroa’s Christmas in the Park
since 1998, and used to wander
around New World on Moorhouse
Ave giving out lollies and
offering hugs.
“There was even businessmen
in suits – that was probably the
nearest they came to empathy
and compassion in their business
life,” he joked.
He has 14 “duties” lined up
in the weeks before Christmas
— six of them in Rotorua, where
he heads on Monday.
Ian worked as a BP
troubleshooter for 31 years,
mostly based at the company’s
Wellington head office, but his
job required him to travel wherever
issues arose. He said he and
his family lived in nine houses
in seven years.
Ian decided to take early
retirement in 1994, aged 52.
“I was losing count of the
number of mates that I had that
were falling to cancer,” he said.
“I thought, well, if we’re gonna
have any sort of retirement, we
need to start it soon.”
He and Ally had planned to
retire in Paraparaumu, but after
spending Christmas at their regular
holiday spot in Tikao Bay in
1997, Ally asked him a question
on the drive home.
“She said, ‘how long is it
from Paraparaumu to Wellington’,
I said about an hour. Then
she said, ‘how long is it from
Christchurch to Tikao’, I said,
well, about an hour.”
“She said, why the hell are we
moving to Paraparaumu.”
So they changed course and
moved back to where it all
began — into the house Ian and
his father had built. He still lives
there today.
Over the years Ian has had
many memorable experiences
while serving as Santa, but one
that stands out happened at a
specialist school in Wellington
in 1979.
After handing out presents,
a child told Ian there was still
Jesse who was waiting outside in
a hospital bed after her fourth
operation for spina bifida.
“I went out and there was this
Telfer playing Santa Claus at one of many family Christmases.
paid for having so much fun’
little kid with the biggest smile
I've ever seen. I go to give her
the present and she held my
hand and she held my hand and
she held my hand,” he said.
“I planned on being there for
about an hour and it was threeand-a-half
hours before she
fell asleep and I could quietly
disengage.”
He still makes memories, with
or without the coat.
Just last week at New World
in Halswell, he felt a bump on
his leg. It was a little girl.
“She said, are you going to
grow your beard down below
your knees? I said no.”
Why not? she asked.
“Because if it gets too long, it
gets in the way of saying ‘ho,
ho, ho’,” he replied, to the girl’s
amazement.
It’s not just children who get
into the festive spirit. Ian said
people in their seventies and
eighties have sat on his lap to
tell him what they want for
Christmas.
He recalled 85-year-old
Wainui farmer Vern Shadbolt
sitting on his lap and saying he
wanted “a good crop of ewes
that produced twins”.
Ally joined him for many
duties as Mrs Claus, reading out
the names of children when his
eyesight failed.
“She loved being Mrs. Santa,
absolutely thrived on it,” he
said.
Even after Ally’s death, Ian
was never tempted to hang up
the red and white coat.
When not in Santa-guise, Ian keeps himself busy building model boats, refurbishing
wooden dinghies and carving wood.
PHOTO: KEES CHALMERS
“Certainly Ally wouldn't have
wanted me to stop being Santa,
so I've just kept doing it,” he
said.
For aspiring Santas, Ian advises
simply being themselves and fully
believing in the character while
wearing the coat and beard.
Ian grew up in Christchurch,
raised solely by his mother until
he was four, while his father
served as a lieutenant during
World War 2, mostly fighting in
the Pacific.
His first memories are of his
father teaching him how to box
correctly.
“He started off with one hand
behind his back, up until I got
him right on the nose, from then
on it was both hands,” he said.
His grandmother Elizabeth, a
Presbyterian, insisted he attend
Sunday School at St Paul’s when
he was six.
He recalled an older boy who
acted as “commander”, hitting
him over the head whenever he
made a mistake.
“He probably hit me five or
six times and I just hit him once,
but I was the one banned from
Sunday school,” he said.
“I thought if that’s their bloody
attitude, they can stick it up
their jumper and I’ve thought so
ever since.”
He went on to become the
heavyweight boxing champion
at Christchurch Boys’ High.
Ian doesn’t see Santa as a
religious figure, comparing him
instead to Odin, a chief god in
Norse mythology.
“Compare what Odin reportedly
did, to what Santa does,
which is basically make people
happy all around the world,” he
said.
Ian played for the Boys’ High
first XV and Old Boys’ as a front
rower, alongside players like
John Graham and Tony Steele,
both future All Blacks.
But Ian’s job at BP stopped
him committing to representative
rugby.
After high school he completed
his national service
with the New Zealand Scottish
Regiment.
He recalled being in a bar,
buying drinks for his kilted
Scots companions, when two
patrons approached and asked
how things were “under the
skirt”.
“I put an arm around each of
them and banged their heads
together, picked up the glasses
and returned to the Scots,” he
said.
“These two then started to
fight one another and of course,
immediately that started the
whole place off, everyone was
suddenly having a punch up.”
Except for the Scots, who
sat up the back, observing
the chaos. They were the only
ones not barred from the
establishment.
Ian said his father’s selfdefence
lessons stayed with him.
“I’ve always been a big ugly
bugger, I’ve always hated bullies
and I’ve helped people when I
can,” he said.
Even at 84, he keeps busy
building model boats, refurbishing
dinghies and carving wood.
He also goes to a weekly book
club in Akaroa.
“Even though I can’t read the
books anymore, I still go along
and give them cheek,” he said.
Seal sighting first in
50 years for retiree
BY DYLAN SMITS
Rob Hardie has lived in
McCormacks Bay for 50 years
– but he had never seen a seal
until the weekend.
While eating lunch at home
about 1pm on Saturday, the
retiree spied something out of
the ordinary during high tide.
“I look out each day at the
birds that come and go. Then
I saw this image on the water
and I thought it was actually a
flotilla of baby ducks. But then
all of a sudden, I saw a head
pop up.”
The fur seal was slowly making
its way back out to sea
towards the Mt Pleasant Community
Centre when Hardie lost
sight of it.
“I thought ‘no way that can
be a seal’ and got some photos.
Seeing a seal just a couple hundred
metres from my house for
the first time in 50 years is quite
something,” he said.
The seal was playing and rolling
in the water.
"It seemed to be scoping out
some of the birds on the little
islands,” said Hardie.
“I was a bit worried it could
get stranded when low tide
came but it seemed to end up
okay.”
Department of Conservation
biodiversity ranger Mailee
Stanbury said fur seals are
fairly common on Banks
Peninsula.
“They breed all around the
peninsula so people are likely to
see them from time to time on
beaches close to Christchurch.”
Sumner lift charity paddle
The fur seal was spotted by Rob Hardie in McCormacks Bay on Saturday.
BY KEES CHALMERS
Sumner may have won the
match, but the community and
football were the real winners
of the inaugural Battle of the
Bays.
The community football
match between neighbouring
rivals Sumner and Redcliffs
was played on Saturday – with
the teams made up of parents,
teachers and community
leaders.
Hall said more than 700
spectators watched the match
and over $20,000 was raised.
Sumner became the first
team to lift the paddle trophy,
winning the penalty shootout
after the sides were deadlocked
at 2-2 at full-time.
The match on the Te
Raekura Redcliffs School field
was a fundraiser for Cure Kids
NZ and the school.
The idea came when Will
Hall and Michael Lough were
watching their children play
for the Ferrymead Bays under-
9s. They were brainstorming
ways to raise money for the
school while bringing the community
together.
Hall said both Sumner
and Our Lady Star of the Sea
schools had notable fundraisers
and he wanted Redcliffs to
have one of its
own.
Lough
pitched the
match to the
school’s PTA
six months
ago, and they
immediately
gave it their
backing.
Since then,
Will Hall
Lough, Hall, and other parents
have worked tirelessly to
organise the event and get the
field into top shape.
PORT NEWS
‘Albie’ the albatross makes
surprise visit to the Tug House
An unexpected visitor caused
a stir at the Port when the
Marine Team spotted an
albatross resting near the Tug
House in October, a rare sight
on land, which prompted them
to alert the LPC Environment
and Sustainability Team.
The bird, named "Albie", was identified as
a Salvin’s Mollymawk, a smaller species of
albatross known for breeding primarily on
the Bounty Islands off the coast of New
Zealand. These birds typically migrate to
the waters off the coasts of Peru and Chile,
making this sighting especially notable.
The Salvin’s Mollymawk measures
between 90 and 100 centimetres in length
and typically weighs from 3.4 to 4.4
kilograms. Its diet consists of fish, squid,
krill, salps, and offal from fishing vessels.
Rather than disturb the bird, LPC called
the South Island Wildlife Hospital, a not-forprofit
organisation dedicated to treating and
rehabilitating native birds.
Vet, Pauline Howard, thought this was a
juvenile bird that may have been pushed up
by the recent storm and was tired and hungry.
She said the Port can be a safe place for
wildlife to rest as it is away from disturbances
and many predators.
After a visit to the hospital for health
checks and some nutrients, Albie was cleared
for release.
Albie was released out to sea beyond the
Banks Peninsula on Saturday, thanks to the
help of BlackCat Cruises.
Lyttelton has achieved a
significant boost in our
operational efficiency, reducing
ship turnaround times.
LPC’s geographic
information system
(GIS) journey
Lyttelton Port Company is
making significant strides in
the digital space by rapidly
developing knowledge and
capability in Geographic
Information Systems (GIS).
The New Zealand Esri User Conference in
Christchurch enabled several LPC staff to
attend, expand their knowledge, and connect
with others using this software.
GIS is revolutionising how information
is displayed and shared, improving
communication and greater operational
efficiencies across LPC as staff embrace the
mapping technology.
Chief Information Officer, Jackie Dawson,
says she was thoroughly impressed by
the quality of the presentations and the
remarkable turnout of attendees.
“It was fantastic to see staff from various
teams present at the event. I left with a clear
sense of the vast potential and opportunities
that GIS presents,” said Jackie.
“It was a powerful reminder of the impact
of storytelling, highlighted by the excellent
examples of storymaps showcased at the
conference,” she added.
Environment and Sustainability Business
Partner, Kirsty Brennan, says it is essential
for multiple teams at the port.
“Engineers, asset managers, marine
specialists, and the environmental team
now rely on GIS to streamline their work,”
said Kirsty.
2 LPC UPDATE December 2025
“The technology allows people to visualise
asset locations, track maintenance needs,
and communicate complex data in a userfriendly
way,” Kirsty added.
Kirsty has been using ArcGIS software
throughout her science career.
Using GIS to analyse data at LPC, Kirsty
has developed a method to determine LPC's
impacts on nature and to track progress
towards the company's biodiversity-positive
ambition. This is a first in New Zealand, and
Kirsty presented on this at the conference.
Practical applications of GIS at LPC
include locating stormwater sumps for
maintenance or cleaning, to high resolution
imagery and crack detection mapping
to viewing bollard ratings and emergency
equipment locations, our teams are
enjoying the ability to visualise and
communicate data.
Kirsty says we are only scratching the
surface of what GIS can do, and it has
already saved significant time and costs.
Key learnings Kirsty took away from the
conference were how councils manage
assets, how drone images can be used for
analysis, and how AI is improving data
patterns and analysis.
“ GIS is revolutionising how
information is displayed
and shared, improving
communication and greater
operational efficiencies
across LPC as staff embrace
the mapping technology.”
In 2024, LPC recorded one of the largest yearon-year
improvements globally in the World
Bank Report.
LPC’s global ranking (CPPI) has risen from
385th to 273rd out of 403 ports worldwide.
Average vessel turnaround time at
Lyttelton has dropped from 52.7 hours in 2023
to 34.8 hours in 2024, a 33.6% decrease. This
turnaround time metric is a crucial indicator
of port performance and a global benchmark,
affecting berth availability, shipping
confidence, and overall terminal throughput.
Enhanced berth planning, real-time
decision-making, strong collaboration with
shipping lines, and operational resilience
have all contributed to delivering robust
turnaround time performance.
Our priorities for FY26 will focus on
further integrating digital systems across
LPC to improve capability, continuing to
invest in safe and efficient work practices,
and embedding a performance culture
through coaching and shared KPI’s.
KiwiRail: Partnering
to grow volume
and velocity
A KiwiRail freight train
leaves MidlandPort
KiwiRail plays a fundamental
role in New Zealand’s
economy, moving millions
of people and over 17 million
tonnes of freight every year
along its 3,700 kilometre
network. For exporters,
KiwiRail is a key enabler,
working in partnership
with LPC to connect Kiwi
businesses with their global
markets.
Around 18% of New Zealand’s total exports
are carried by KiwiRail, with a significant
portion flowing through Lyttelton Port. In the
past 12 months alone, KiwiRail has moved 1.9
million tonnes of freight to Lyttelton, running
60 train services into the Port weekly.
Alan Piper, Executive General Manager of
Freight Markets at KiwiRail, says LPC is the
ideal hub for getting South Island goods out
to global markets.
“Lyttelton offers a number of advantages
as an export gateway. It has a large local
consumer base, which supports efficient
container utilisation, combined with a central
location and a broad range of shipping lines.
It offers volume, velocity and speed of access
to markets – and that’s what matters to
exporters,” says Alan.
One product that has recently ramped up
its use of the KiwiRail-LPC corridor is wine
from Marlborough. With nearly 80% of all
New Zealand wine produced in the region,
exporting it efficiently is critical.
Marlborough wine begins its rail journey
at KiwiRail’s Spring Creek hub in Blenheim,
where containers are loaded directly onto
trains and then railed south to Lyttelton.
The model is particularly suited to bulk wine,
which is transported in insulated bladders
inside standard 20-foot containers. These
can be double-stacked on a single rail wagon,
offering a capacity advantage that trucks
can’t match.
The environmental benefits are also
significant. Despite the extra distance,
railing wine to Lyttelton emits less carbon
than trucking it to closer ports. “Rail is up
to 70% more carbon efficient than road
transport. That’s important for exporters,
because having a smaller carbon footprint is a
powerful selling proposition,” Alan says.
The partnership between KiwiRail
and LPC continues to strengthen as both
organisations invest in the future. With
an $8b cash injection from government,
KiwiRail is undergoing a major fleet
upgrade, including new wagons and
locomotives for the South Island. This will
increase capacity and improve reliability,
helping to shift more freight from road
to rail.
Port-side, LPC’s proposed infrastructure
investment will support greater freight
throughput, with rail playing a vital role in
moving containers on and off the Port.
“As ships increase in size, the freight task
becomes larger. That makes it even more
important for rail to operate efficiently,” says
Alan. “We’re working with LPC to connect
our rail-enabled infrastructure in the
region so we can move larger numbers of
containers in a coordinated way.”
While KiwiRail and LPC represent
different links on the export chain, both
organisations share the same goal.
“Ultimately, we both want to help
Kiwi exporters be more competitive and
successful in the global marketplace.
That means getting home-grown goods
out into the world with speed, efficiency
and certainty,” says Alan. “Together, we’re
working to make that happen.”
“ Ultimately,
we both want
to help Kiwi
exporters
be more
competitive
and successful
in the global
marketplace.”
OUR PEOPLE
Kiriana
Coleman:
Keeping the
Port secure
Kiriana Coleman’s dedication
and expertise have seen her
rise through the ranks. She is
responsible for ensuring the
safety and security of the
Port and overseeing a team
of 25 staff.
Kiriana has been integral to LPC since
joining as a casual security officer in 2004.
She quickly rose through the ranks, taking
on roles such as security administrator and
coordinator.
After a stint away from the Port, Kiriana
was lured back and has since led the
Security team as LPC Security Manager for
the past five years.
“My role is keeping the Port secure with a
team of 25 staff,” says Kiriana.
Kiriana oversees Port security and is also
responsible for regulatory compliance with
Maritime New Zealand. This involves
planning long-term security strategies and
following up on security incidents to ensure
they are resolved efficiently.
“I am kept informed of any incidents, seek
information and partner with key agencies
to make decisions – be it trespassing,
enabling or disabling access to the Port.”
Kiriana’s approach to security is proactive
and strategic. “I am focused on preventing
incidents before they occur to ensure the
Port remains safe.”
Cruise ship security improvements
One of Kiriana’s notable achievements has
been improving security measures for cruise
ship passengers.
Recognising the challenges posed by the
influx of thousands of passengers returning
to the Port following a day out on tourist
excursions, Kiriana successfully lobbied for
changes to LPC’s security checkpoint
procedures.
This resulted in implementing a new
system where ID checks for cruise
passengers were conducted at a barrier arm
near the vessel, streamlining the process
and reducing congestion at the main
entrance gate.
“This not only improved the efficiency of
the security process but enhanced the
overall experience for visiting passengers,”
says Kiriana.
Kiriana’s commitment to security extends
beyond the Port’s physical boundaries. She
has been instrumental in fostering
connections with external agencies such as
New Zealand Customs and New Zealand
Police, facilitating joint efforts to enhance
security measures.
“This collaboration has been valuable in
the current geopolitical climate, where the
need for robust security measures is more
critical than ever,” she says.
Kiriana has valued professional
development programmes offered by LPC,
which have allowed her to enhance her
leadership skills and advance her career.
As LPC continues to embrace new
technologies, Kiriana is excited about the
future of security at the Port. She envisions
a shift towards more digitised processes and
the use of artificial intelligence to enhance
security measures.
“I’d like the Port security at Lyttelton to
be a best-practice example of somewhere
that does it well and does it smart as we
move towards more artificial intelligence
and tech.”
Kiriana’s advice to those looking to join
LPC is simple.“Get your foot in the door.”
Once you are part of the LPC team, the
opportunities to grow and progress are
endless.”
Kiriana’s dedication, expertise and
forward-thinking approach have made
her an invaluable asset to LPC.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
This Contemporary Clifton Hill home rises
alongside Brownlee Reserve, combining privacy
and poolside living with panoramic views
over Moncks Bay and beyond.
Subdivided in 2014 and completed in 2017 to
a design by architect Neil Hey, the home sits
on 631sqm of freehold land, its modern form
drawing all-day sun and keeping the view in
constant reach.
Coloured brick and corrugated iron cladding give
the house its modern, low-maintenance edge,
matched by the hillside advantage of drive-on
ease into an internal-access double garage.
At 230sqm, the layout finds balance across
both floors. Three bedrooms occupy the
ground level, with one serving as a study or 4th
bedroom, while a tiled family-sized bathroom
offers scope for a ground-floor studio.
Upstairs, the master suite steps up in scale,
its walk-in wardrobe linking to an en-suite,
while a separate WC keeps day-to-day
practicality in play.
Driven by views, the top floor features a lightfilled,
open-plan kitchen, sitting and dining
room, where a built-in nook lends itself to
work or meals on the go, before moving into
a formal lounge that adds a further dimension
to daily living.
Both living spaces open to a partially sheltered
balcony with room to entertain, taking in a
coastal sweep from Moncks Bay and the
estuary to Pegasus Bay, with the pool directly
below completing the elevated outlook.
The swimming pool naturally claims the
summertime spotlight, strengthened by the privacy
of Brownlee Reserve along the boundary.
At the foot of the hill, Sumner Village folds
into daily life through cafés, bars, the beach and
everyday essentials, while city conveniences
are around twenty minutes away, keeping
life balanced between coast and connection.
Carried forward through time and design,
this Clifton Hill home is being offered for the
very first time, released by owners preparing to
downsize after decades in this prized position.
Please contact Chris for more information or
to arrange a private viewing.
