The Directory
The Coach Tourism Association is, in many ways, the quiet engine
room of British group travel. Not loud. Not flashy. Just relentlessly
practical. If coach tourism were a long-distance vehicle climbing a
steep hill, the CTA would be the torque: not always visible, but
absolutely essential.
At its core, the Association exists to make life easier for the people
who actually make coach tourism happen. Operators, wholesalers,
destinations and suppliers all sit around the same table, which in
itself is no small achievement in an industry where time is short and
margins are tight. The CTA gives that table structure, purpose and
more importantly direction.
What makes the CTA work is its focus on real-world outcomes. This
isn’t an organisation built on vague aspirations. It’s built on parking
bays that actually fit coaches, drop-off points that don’t involve
three-point turns across bus lanes, and attractions that understand
what a 50-seat vehicle really means in terms of toilets, timing and
tea. It’s the difference between theory and practice, between
marketing copy and operational reality.
Over recent years the CTA has quietly become one of the most
influential voices in domestic tourism. As destinations have started
to understand the economic and environmental value of group
travel, the Association has been translating industry needs into
something local authorities and policymakers can act on. Coaches
now sit right at the heart of conversations about sustainable
tourism, regional visitor dispersal and off-peak travel not as an
afterthought, but as a serious solution.
It’s also a community. Not the vague, social-media kind of
“community”, but the practical kind. Members share routes,
warnings, wins, losses and lessons. There’s a culture of swapping
knowledge that still feels refreshingly old-fashioned in the best
sense: people helping people because it improves the whole
industry.
The CTA’s events have become fixtures in the calendar. They aren’t
about glossy brochures or sales pitches. They are about connectors.
Drivers meet hoteliers. Operators meet attraction managers.
Planners meet people who actually run the day-to-day reality of
destinations. Conversations happen that would never fit into an
email chain or a spreadsheet.
The CTA doesn’t shout about it. It simply keeps
the wheels turning. Quietly. Efficiently.
Effectively.

The NYMR is ready to welcome groups to experience a nostalgic journey
through 24 miles of stunning Yorkshire scenery aboard its fleet of heritage
locomotives.
Groups can explore the line; being transported back in time to 1930sthemed
Pickering station, the operating and engineering world of the
NYMR at Grosmont, and Goathland, the station that became Hogsmeade
Station in the first Harry Potter film. At the end of the line is Whitby, with
its bustling harbour, and the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.
NYMR’s group fares include single and return 1-Stop, 2-Stop, 3-Stop and
All Line Tickets. An All Line adult return is £40 and an All Line child return
is £20.

South Devon Railway
South Devon Railway, the longest established steam railway in the southwest,
is an all-weather destination. Nestling in breathtaking scenery
adjacent to the River Dart, visitors can enjoy nostalgic steam train journeys
on heritage rolling stock, meandering along a seven-mile branch line built
in 1872. Embark on an adventure, discovering a wealth of wildlife and rail
traditions, much of which is unseen from the roads!
Able to disembark at three stations – Buckfastleigh, Staverton, and Totnes
– travellers have options of riverside walks, gardens, a fascinating museum,

The exquisite Italianate Garden was originally laid out in the 1920s by
Ethel Labouchere in memory of her husband. The Fountain Court and
surrounding terraces sit gracefully below the croquet lawn, enclosed by
topiary, octagonal pools, grottoes, and stone statues. Inspired by Harold
Peto’s Italianate style, Labouchere combined classical formality with
softened planting, enhanced by yew and box hedges, local Blue Lias
paving, and honey-hued Hamstone walls.
The garden evolved further under Victor Montagu in the 1960s with the
addition of a gilded orangery, its glass roof sheltering roses, begonias, and
exotic plants, while offering sweeping views across the valley. From here
the garden descends to a lower terrace with a 17th-century summerhouse,
spring-fed ponds, and the beginnings of the wild garden. The Arboretum
and woodland walks unfold with magnolias, dawn redwoods, tulip trees,
and dogwoods, with steep valleys and headlands stretching to the sea a
few miles away.
A small chapel dating back to the 12th century sits within the grounds,
and the Coach House café provides refreshments – using produce from the
Kitchen Garden - for visitors.
The House and Gardens form the centre of a working rural estate of
around 1,800 acres of grassland, ancient woodland and Mapperton’s
Wildlands, Dorset’s most spectacular rewilding project. Promoting

Daish’s From Island Roots to National Reach
Daish’s story is one of gentle evolution rather than revolution. “During the
1980s the business really took off,” recalls Paul. “Coach groups were
growing in popularity, and Mrs Wilson saw the opportunity. By 1985 she
had purchased her own coaches and started running tours herself.” Those
instincts proved spot on. By the time others were scaling back, Daish’s was
rolling forward, steadily expanding its network of hotels and routes across
the country.
Today, Daish’s operates 12 hotels across 10 destinations in England and
Wales, including the grand Imperial Hotel in Eastbourne and the muchloved
Esplanade in Scarborough. Their 35-strong fleet of luxury coaches,
resplendent in white and gold, collect guests from 18 different pick-up
points across Britain, from Yorkshire to Cornwall. “Guests can also choose
to self-drive,” adds Sam Wilson, Jeanne’s son and now Head of Estates,
who runs the business alongside his brother George Brown, Managing
Director. “Our goal is simple: to continue Mum’s legacy — offering
Daish’s has always been proudly British. Their holidays champion the joys
of the homegrown seaside promenades, piers, and a hint of nostalgia
wrapped in the comfort of modern hospitality. “Our most popular
destination is Eastbourne,” admits Sam, “but every one of our locations has
its loyal regulars. Guests come back year after year because they know
exactly what to expect great service and a stress-free break.”
Daish’s also plays a quiet but important role behind the scenes. “We host
up to £4 million of business each year from other operators,” says Paul,
referring to partnerships with InterChoice Holidays, Dunwood Travel, and
Shearings. “It keeps our hotels thriving and the business connected to the
wider travel community.”
And for Paul, when he’s not juggling schedules or fine-tuning operations,
there’s always time for a different kind of ride – his Triumph Bonneville.
“Just me and the open road,” he grins, “a single-seater version of what we
do best.”
Asked what he’d change if given the power for a day, Paul doesn’t hesitate.
“Social care,” he says. “It’s something we all need to look after – each
other.” It’s a sentiment that feels entirely in tune with Daish’s itself: a
business built on care, comfort, and a belief that the best of Britain is still
worth touring.

The Devil’s Porridge Museum
Is one of those places that makes you wonder how on earth we’ve managed to
forget half the country’s best stories. Tucked away in Eastriggs, it tells the tale of
the enormous wartime factory where thousands of women mixed an explosive

paste cheerfully nicknamed “devil’s
porridge” because “mildly worrying
porridge” apparently didn’t capture the
mood.
For groups, it’s a gift. The exhibits are
hands-on, the guides know every
anecdote worth knowing, and the

most seasoned group organiser awake.

Elton Hall is a fascinating mixture of styles and has been home to the
Proby family since 1660. The house contains wonderful furniture,
porcelain and magnificent paintings. Artists represented in the
collection include Gainsborough, Constable, Reynolds and Old Masters
from the early Italian Renaissance. The library is one of the finest in
private ownership and contains such treasures as
Henry VIII’s prayer book.
The award winning formal gardens have been restored during the last
40 years and include a Gothic Orangery, a Flower Garden with
spectacular fountain, Shrub Garden and Box Walk. Billowing borders
surround the lily pond, while topiary, parterres and immaculately kept

Hertfordshire, often described as London's back garden, is in fact a mosaic
of nature reserves and green open spaces known as the Lee Valley Park,
which stretches 26 miles from London's East End all the way to
Broxbourne.
The historic city of St. Albans is a fascinating place, with its Georgian
houses, antique shops and bustling market. The magnificent cathedral
would be reason enough for groups to visit. It is dedicated to St Alban, a
Roman who became the first Christian martyr when he died for his beliefs
in the 3rd century.
Hatfield House, childhood home of Queen Elizabeth I, is one of the jewels
of England's heritage. To the north, Knebworth House sits in 250 acres of
parkland and is well worth a visit.
