Colin Brown
Layers of colour,
fragments of life,
a world reimagined
Colin Brown
Colin Brown’s practice is marked by a rare trust in the unpredictable. Entering each painting without a
predetermined destination, he begins instead by building a surface—layered, textured, interrupted by marks
that act as provisional anchors.
From these modest starting points, a conversation gradually unfolds between gesture and structure, between
intuition and refinement, between what the painting proposes and what the artist allows. Nothing is fixed until
it needs to be. Each element is scrutinised, adjusted, and reconsidered, until a delicate equilibrium of surface,
rhythm, and form finally emerges.
Brown's materials—acrylic and oil paints, collage, glazes, varnishes—are enlisted not only for their physical
qualities but for the conversations they open. Applied to wood panels, and often leaning toward the palette of
the urban rather than the purely natural, they contribute to works that celebrate the restless vitality of
contemporary culture. Found fragments, layered meanings, and the Dadaist delight in reassembling the world
in pieces all find their place in these paintings.
Over more than thirty-four years, Brown has sustained an inquisitive and internationally recognised practice.
Exhibitions across the UK, Europe, and the United States have shaped and expanded his career, alongside
formative periods spent living and working in Florence and Düsseldorf. Now based in Stonehaven on Scotland’s
north-east coast, he continues to pursue new directions in his studio. His achievements include numerous
awards, among them a major Artist’s Grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in New York.
Also featured in this catalogue is The Birmingham Collection—exclusive originals and signed editions created
for Forward Gallery. These works pay tribute to the city’s cultural icons: from the pioneering musicians of Black
Sabbath and The Beat to a celebratory homage marking Aston Villa Football Club’s 150th anniversary. In these
pieces, Brown channels the same spirit of exploration and reinvention, fusing graphic resonance, musical
heritage, and local identity into vibrant contemporary forms. Together, the works assembled here chart a
practice committed to discovery, dialogue, and the enduring power of visual culture—past, present, and
always in motion.

The Birmingham Collection
The Birmingham Collection presents a series of exclusive originals and signed editions created by
Colin Brown for Forward Gallery, celebrating the cultural identity and creative legacy of the city. In
these works, Brown turns his signature visual language toward Birmingham’s most influential icons—
most notably the groundbreaking musicians of Black Sabbath and The Beat. By combining collage,
layered surfaces, and bold graphic elements, he captures not only the energy of their music but the
spirit of innovation that shaped the city’s artistic landscape.
The collection also features a tribute to Aston Villa Football Club in recognition of its 150th
anniversary. Brown approaches this milestone with the same blend of respect and reinvention that
characterises his wider practice, weaving together emblematic motifs, colour, and texture to create a
contemporary homage to a historic institution.
In addition to the originals and signed editions,
Forward Gallery offers a special series of hand-finished editions.
In these, commissioners can supply their own photographs or personal images, which Brown then
integrates directly into the work using his paints, collage techniques, and varnishes. Each addition is
layered, altered, and harmonised with his visual language, creating a deeply personal and
completely unique piece that blends the commissioner’s memories with Brown’s contemporary
artistry.
Together, these pieces form a dynamic portrait of Birmingham—its sound, its culture, and its
enduring influence—reimagined through Brown’s distinctive modern lens.
