PINTOS OY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2024
IN SUSTAINABILITY WORK, PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
Major changes rarely happen overnight, and significant
improvements usually require several years of
determined and well-planned work. At Pintos, one such
long-term project has been the reduction of carbon
dioxide emissions. Pintos switched to using carbonfree
electricity in 2024, which led to a significant drop
in Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
We are continuously developing our operations. One
major recent area of improvement has been
strengthening reinforcement design. When considering
reinforcement solutions for a construction site, we
support the customer and can assist in designing the
most suitable reinforcement package for the project.
The builder saves time, money, and natural resources
with tailored reinforcement solution. Another important
area of change has been the development of our own
production processes. Over the past year, we have
especially focused on the production processes of our
industrial nail factory, successfully modernizing and
streamlining them. The result is a product with a
smaller carbon footprint and improved quality.
One of the most current and significant topics in our
industry today is the sustainability of steel suppliers.
Increasingly, steel is being imported to the Baltic Sea
region from very distant locations, even from North
Africa and China.
This is a worrying trend. Long sea transports create
large emissions, and it is difficult to verify the
sustainability of the factories. Steel mills in North Africa
use fossil fuels for energy, and billets can be shipped
to rolling mills from very far away. Sustainability cannot
be achieved in the construction sector if not everyone
plays by the same rules. It also distorts competition
and damages the reputation of the entire construction
industry.
At Pintos, we only use products from well-known
European steel manufacturers. The scrap material is
traceable and primarily comes from by-products of
European industry. The billets are produced in
European steel mills and rolled into wire and
reinforcing steel in the mills' own rolling facilities.
European legislation and its enforcement ensure that
occupational safety standards in these factories are
high. Increasingly, these factories also prefer European
carbon-free energy in their production—just like we do
at Pintos.

PINTOS OY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2024
DEVELOPING OPERATIONS
THROUGH INVESTMENTS
We believe that economic sustainability
forms the foundation for all other
dimensions of sustainability. A
sustainable company takes care of its
own profitability and competitiveness to
ensure long-term viability.
In addition to profitable and sustainable
business operations, economic
sustainability also encompasses risk
management and governance practices.
This means achieving good results
through sustainable means. The
economic impact of our operations is
significant for our stakeholders and for
society.

Market conditions and the resulting
changes in the operating environment can
shift rapidly. Pintos has protected itself
against these risks by steadily developing
its operations and adapting flexibly to
changing circumstances when needed.
A solid financial foundation enables
continuous investment, which has made
Pintos a technological and productionefficiency
leader in its industry. At the
same time, we are strengthening our
sustainability. The goal of our investments

INDUSTRIAL NAILS – SUSTAINABLY MANUFACTURED
Each year, we carry out several investments aimed at improving efficiency, enhancing
occupational safety, reducing energy consumption, and optimizing raw material usage.
In 2024, we invested in nail production at our Eura factory. As part of these improvements,
we removed outdated wire drawing machines, modernized a wire drawing line while
improving its safety, built a new control room and tool station, made layout changes to the
production facilities, enhanced dust extraction, and replaced lighting with LED fixtures.
These investments brought various improvements. The primary goal of investing in nail
quality was to secure the continuity of nail production and the preservation of jobs. At the
same time, it enabled safer work in improved conditions and the production of higherquality
products for our customers.
Thanks to the modernization, the reliability of the nail wire drawing line has increased,
making the machine more cost-effective to operate. The improved quality of the wire
allowed us to eliminate unnecessary production steps, which reduced lifting operations on
the machine and thus enhanced occupational safety.
We also focused on improving safety through enhanced dust extraction and protective
fencing. The new control room and tool station enable better quality control while also
supporting improved workplace comfort.

A NEW ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING SYSTEM
BRINGS RELIABILITY
At the heart of today’s business operations are modern information technology solutions. At
Pintos, up-to-date ICT services support both equipment investments and new service
concepts, thereby also enabling the development of work practices and methods to
become more productive and sustainable. As part of this development work, Pintos
implemented a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system—Microsoft Business
Central—at the end of 2024. This system now serves as the foundation for all business
processes.
The renewal of the ERP system is Pintos’s largest ICT investment in the past 20 years,
both in terms of financial cost and workload. The project had been under preparation for
the past three years and culminated at the end of 2024 with a six-month deployment and
testing phase.
The new ERP system manages all business processes related to sales, production, and
procurement. With modern solutions, all company operations can be managed through a
single platform. This improves information flow, enhances knowledge work, and facilitates
the adoption of new and increasingly modern methods in the future. Thanks to this up-todate
software, Pintos will also be better equipped to respond to market changes—greater
reactivity and scalability will increase both the company's productivity and operational
reliability.
As a system that cuts across all company operations, this new investment improves
internal communication, reduces the potential for errors, increases traceability, and
enhances data security. It also makes knowledge work easier, which reduces work strain
and thereby contributes to better employee well-being.

PINTOS OY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2024
PINTOS GENERATES BROAD ECONOMIC WELL-BEING
Pintos delivers economic prosperity not only to its own
personnel, but also to society at large. Our production
plants are located in Eura and Rauma, in the heart of
the Satakunta region. In 2024, we had a total of 120
employees at our plants, in addition to indirectly
employing a number of partners in logistics,
maintenance and information technology, for example.
We are a prominent employer in our area and, through
corporate taxation, we strengthen regional economy in
particular.
Around 87 per cent of our turnover is from sales of
reinforcements, lifting loops and industrial nails
manufactured in our own production facilities. The most
significant product group by far is reinforcement mesh
for concrete construction, for which we are the market
leader in the Nordic countries.
Even though we operate internationally, we are a local
actor deeply rooted in the Satakunta region. Our own
plants manage everything from planning and production
to sales.
Local presence is not only a matter of honour, it also
ensures that we operate sustainably: with our
production sites close by and people who are familiar
with each other, we can manage our operations in a
transparent and sustainable way.
We prefer partnerships with Finnish suppliers and
partners wherever technically and economically
feasible. However, raw materials account for by far the
largest share of procurement costs each year, and the
main raw material, wire rod, is not available in Finland.
Pintos expects that all its partners are operating
responsibly, both locally and overseas, and only
purchases raw materials from trusted, established steel
suppliers.
The challenges in the construction sector and the
stagnation of the market were also temporarily reflected
in our domestic content. While in a typical year,
domestic purchases have accounted for around 20 per
cent of all acquisitions, in 2024 the share reached 38
per cent as steel purchases decreased.

TAX FOOTPRINT BOOST SOCIETY
We support the operation of the society by paying taxes and creating jobs. We
handle tax returns and other legal obligations properly and promptly. We comply
with the current legislation in paying, collecting, accounting for and reporting taxes.
The accuracy and legality of the information are ensured through financial
management audits conducted by an independent party.
The tax footprint consists of two main areas: direct taxes paid by the company and
taxes paid by the company. Direct taxes include income tax and vehicle and
transfer taxes. Taxes paid by the company include withholding tax and VAT.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
PINTOS OY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2024
EFFICIENT OPERATION MINIMIZES
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
We at Pintos are constantly looking for new
environmentally friendly operating models and
we work towards minimizing the environmental
load. We think that when efficient, high-quality
operation is combined with well-managed
modern processes, we create impactful
changes.
Efficient use of raw materials, energy and
packaging reduces unnecessary use of natural
resources and raw material waste. High-quality
products to measure such as tailored
reinforcement components also reduce waste
for our customers. We also manage
reinforcement design for the projects, which
speeds up product installation, reduces safety
risks on the construction site, and minimizes
material waste.
Our environmental work is guided by a certified
ISO 14001 management system. The largest
share of the used raw materials is recycled and
the packaging of our products are fully
recyclable.
Pintos has taken producer sustainability for its
packaging by entering into an agreement with
producer associations managed by RINKI Oy.
In 2024, Pintos used recycled, scrap-based
steel in 96 per cent of all steel materials in its
production. The proportion has increased each
year: In 2023, the corresponding number was
95 per cent, in 2022 it was 92 per cent, in 2021
it was 91 per cent and in 2020 it was 90 per
cent.
We organize the transportation of raw materials
and ready products as efficiently as possible
and as full loads. Optimizing transportation
reduces costs and saves the nature.

RECYCLING TOWARDS A MORE
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
At Pintos, all waste generated is either recycled or utilized for energy production, enabled by
an efficient waste management system. Approximately 93% of our waste consists of metal
scrap, which is returned to the recycling loop. Our goal is to minimize the amount of waste
and material loss at every stage of the production process.
The amount of metal scrap generated from our production is directly proportional to
production volume, which is why in 2024 we produced less scrap than in previous years. The
volume of other waste types varies annually regardless of production output, often influenced
by investment projects.
Pintos invests heavily, and new machines frequently replace older ones. When equipment is
upgraded, older hydraulic devices are often replaced with electric ones, as they are more
user friendly and environmentally friendly. Our primary objective is to extend the lifecycle of
older machines by passing them on for continued use. When production machinery has
reached the end of its lifecycle, we aim to carry out dismantling work in-house. This allows
us to ensure the efficient recycling and reuse of various machine components.

USE OF ENERGY
In 2024, the total electricity consumption in our production
operations was 6,180 MWh. Pintos transitioned to using
carbon-free electricity in 2024. The energy intensity figure,
which describes energy efficiency and is measured as
electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours per kilogram of product
manufactured, increased by 4% compared to the 2023 figure.
This rise is mainly due to a significantly reduced production
volume relative to electricity consumption, similar to the
previous year. The shift in production focus toward increasingly
customer-tailored products has also contributed to the change.
For heating our factory buildings, we use domestic bioenergy in
the form of wood chip heating.
As part of our sustainability goals, we have committed to
ensuring that all forklifts with a lifting capacity under five tons
will be electric by 2028. By the end of 2024, 52% of these
forklifts were electric. The forklifts’ fuel consumption, measured
in liters per kilogram produced, increased by 9% compared to
2023.

Pintos assessed its climate emissions for 2024 in
accordance with the GHG Protocol, using the
Climpactor 2.0 carbon footprint tool.
Scope 1 emissions include the company’s own
direct emissions, such as fuel and refrigerants
used in operations. Scope 2 covers emissions
from purchased energy, including electricity,
heating, steam, and cooling. Scope 3 includes
indirect emissions originating from the company’s
value chain.
These include, for example, emissions from the
production and transportation of raw materials.
The majority of our carbon footprint—86% of the
total—comes from the production of our main raw
material: steel.
Scope 1–2 emissions decreased significantly
compared to 2023. This change was especially
due to the transition to carbon-free electricity. The
increase in Scope 3 emissions is solely the result
of a rise in the volume of raw material purchases.

SUSTAINBLY UTILIZING
NATURAL RESOURCES
In our production at the Eura factory, we also utilize emission-free solar electricity
generated by Pintos’s own solar power plant. The solar plant was commissioned
in 2020 from a local partner, Paneliankosken Voima. Its average annual
production is approximately 70 MWh, which corresponds to the total yearly
electricity consumption of about four electrically heated single-family homes.
Water consumption in Pintos's production processes is very low. It consists
almost entirely of sanitary water. The cooling water used in production lines
operates in a fully closed internal circulation system.
The combined total water consumption of Pintos’s production facilities in Eura
and Lappi in 2024 was 2,019 m³.

We reward our employees annually for
years of service, special milestones, and
retirement. Length-of-service recognition
begins after just three years at Pintos
and continues at regular intervals
throughout the employee’s career.
Milestone birthdays are also celebrated
when employees turn 50 and 60.
We don’t forget our employees after
retirement either. Pintos has a longstanding
tradition of hosting a dedicated
annual event for retirees, where they can
catch up with one another and hear the
latest news from the company.

PINTOS OY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2024
A LONG-TERM EMPLOYER
We operate productively and in balance when
the personnel includes both experienced
professionals and young newcomers in the right
proportion. This allows us to combine solid
expertise with fresh knowledge.
At Pintos, long careers are common. In 2024,
29% of our employees had been with the
company for 11–20 years. Another 24% had
worked for the company for over 20 years. Of all
employment contracts, 95% were permanent.
The remaining 5% consisted of fixed-term, parttime,
or agency work. All of our employees are
covered by collective labor agreements.
We employ young people even during economic
downturns. Each year, Pintos hires several
summer workers and interns for both production
and office roles. In 2024, Pintos also supported
two thesis projects—one focused on product
safety related to CE marking for lifting loops,
and the other on improving working conditions
at production sites through better noise control.
In 2024, employee turnover was 14%, including
fixed-term contracts.
We actively participate in local recruitment
events aimed at young people to promote our
open positions. Many summer workers are
offered the opportunity to continue with us after
their fixed-term employment or internship
period. The company supports career
development and offers responsibility when the
employee’s motivation and attitude are right. In
2024, employees under 30 made up 8% of our
total workforce.
To promote an open, transparent, and safe
working culture, we implemented the Valu
whistleblowing channel in spring 2024 for
reporting suspected misconduct. The name
“Valu” comes from our values: Vastuullinen
(Sustainable), Aikaansaava (Productive),
Luotettava (Reliable), and Uudistuva
(Innovative). Whistleblowing refers to raising a
concern or reporting a suspected violation.
The purpose of the reporting channel is to
protect employees, the company, and other
internal and external stakeholders. In addition to
Pintos staff, the channel is available to
customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and other
business partners. No suspected misconduct
was reported in 2024.

CE MARKING OF LIFTING LOOPS
IMPROVES CUSTOMER SAFETY
Pintos is committed to promoting
workplace safety for its customers as well.
Our prefabricated, precisely measured
reinforcement products reduce heavy and
hazardous work phases both in precast
concrete factories and on construction
sites.
One of the most significant improvements
made last year was the CE marking of
lifting loops. Unlike our other products, a
lifting loop installed in a concrete element
or product is classified as a lifting
accessory and therefore requires CE
marking in accordance with the Machinery
Directive. The CE marking of lifting loops
serves as proof that the products comply
with the relevant requirements.
Until now, the lifting capacities of Pintos
lifting loops had been determined through
calculations and material testing. These
values have now been verified through
tensile testing directly from concrete
elements, simulating real-life usage
conditions. Nearly 150 tests were
conducted, covering a range of lifting
scenarios and use cases, such as wall
elements and concrete piles.
The testing model was developed by Riku
Kröger as part of a master’s thesis at
Tampere University, based on applicable
industry standards. Systematic testing of
the lifting capacities of loops and concrete
components began in February 2024 and
was completed in spring 2025.
With the CE marking, more
comprehensive user instructions are now
available for the lifting loops, making their
design, installation, and use easier than
before. The clear instructions provided to
precast factories, construction sites, and
designers help enhance overall customer
safety. The operational conditions and
limitations of the products have been
carefully evaluated with a safety-first
approach. The stated lifting capacities of
various loop types include high safety
factors, ensuring durability even in the
event of unexpectedly high loads during
lifting.

SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN ACCIDENTS
In 2024, the lost-time injury frequency (LTIF1)
was 11.0 accidents per one million working
hours. This marks a significant decrease
compared to 2023, when the LTIF was 33.0.
There were two work-related accidents in 2024
that resulted in at least one day of absence.
The decrease in these figures is the result of
continuous identification and mitigation of workrelated
risks. Employees are encouraged to
report even the smallest factors that could
compromise safety. We review all accidents,
near misses, and safety observations together
with our staff.
We also regularly monitor sick leaves and their
causes, and we have implemented an early
intervention model. The percentage of absences
due to illness and accidents dropped to 4.0% of
all working hours in 2024. Absences caused by
work-related injuries accounted for 1.8% of all
sick and accident-related absences, compared to
9.5% in 2023.

SAFER WORK THROUGH TRAINING
In 2024, our training efforts focused heavily on
improving occupational safety. A
comprehensive training program titled
"Ironclad Workplace Safety" was conducted
under the guidance of industry experts, with an
emphasis on proactive safety practices. The
training included topics such as identifying
safety deviations and understanding the
influence of psychological behavior patterns
on workplace safety. Participants also
practiced analyzing the root causes of
accidents using various methods.
The training also covered the 5S model from
the Lean system, which is designed to help
organize the work environment and
standardize working methods. The lessons
and practices from these trainings have been
implemented at both of Pintos’s production
plants. In total, 552 hours of training were
recorded in 2024—an average of 4.6 hours per
employee
Genuine, everyday interaction is part of our
working culture and is reflected in our
company values. We have improved our
meeting practices to support daily
communication, with the goal of enabling more
efficient information flow and open dialogue.
Regular development discussions also support
communication, and every Pintos employee
participates in them. In production roles, these
discussions are held at least every two years,
while for office personnel, they are conducted
more frequently.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN’S
AND YOUTH HOBBIES
Pintos actively supports local sports clubs and other organizations.
Our primary focus in sports sponsorship is children and young people.
Local clubs that do extensive youth work include Euran Raiku, Panelian
Raikas, and Euran Pallo. We have supported these clubs financially for
several years.
Pintos aims to work with these clubs to ensure that children and youth can
participate in sports regardless of their background—gaining joy and
experiences through physical activity and learning the value of teamwork.
In 2024, youth sports accounted for 56% of all the support we provided. In
total, we supported 31 different organizations.
