Health and safety expert
urges homeowners to
check gas appliances
before Christmas
Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright
has advised Wolseley Plumb and
Parts (Wolseley) on its continued
operation and trade in relation to
health and safety, and planning
permissions, in the Channel Island
of Jersey.
Wolseley is one of the UK’s leading
merchants in plumbing, heating,
cooling and infrastructure. It has 560
branches in the UK and has been
supporting a variety of trades for
decades.
The merchant has been trading
from its unit in La Collette for
several years and before taking
occupancy had received assurance
from the Regulation Directorate in
Jersey that they could trade from
this unit. However, Wolseley was
recently informed by the Regulation
Directorate that it was obliged to
apply for planning permission, with
the Health and Safety Inspectorate
advising against this being granted
due to La Collette being a dockland
area with a fuel terminal which they
considered posed a danger to the
public.
Norton Rose Fulbright assisted
Wolseley in providing a counter
health and safety report to the Health
and Safety Inspectorate, as well as
securing the planning permission,
for its trade counter at its La Collette
branch in St Hellier, Jersey.
The multi-disciplinary team from
Norton Rose Fulbright included Head
of Planning, Sarah Fitzpatrick, who
advised on the planning application
and conditions within it; Head of
Health and Safety, Europe, Middle
East and Asia, Caroline May; and
senior associate, Andrew Swarbrick,
who prepared the counter health and
safety report.

With
Christmas
just around
the corner,
Derek
Bruce, a
leading
health and safety expert at SMSTS
Course, is issuing a timely warning
to homeowners: ensure your gas
appliances are in top condition to
avoid potential hazards during the
festive season. Faulty gas equipment
and overlooked maintenance can
lead to serious risks, including
carbon monoxide poisoning, gas
leaks, and fires.
“As the temperature drops and
homes gear up for the holidays, it’s
critical to make sure gas appliances
are safe and functional,” says Derek
Bruce. “A few simple checks can
make all the difference in keeping
your family warm, safe, and stressfree
this Christmas.”
Key gas items to check in your home:
1) Gas Boilers
Boilers work overtime during winter,
and a breakdown could ruin your
festive plans. Schedule a service
with a Gas Safe-registered engineer
to prevent leaks or malfunctions.
2) Gas Fires
Popular for creating a cosy
atmosphere, gas fires should be
inspected for signs of trouble,
such as yellow flames or unusual
smells.
3) Cookers and Ovens
With kitchens in high demand
for Christmas feasts, ensure your
gas cooker or oven operates
safely. Watch for uneven flames or
difficulty lighting burners.
4) Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Test or replace the batteries in
your carbon monoxide alarms.
These life-saving devices can alert
you to dangerous levels of this
odorless and colourless gas.
5) Gas Meters and Pipes
Inspect your gas meter and
exposed pipes for damage or
corrosion. If you spot anything
suspicious, contact a professional
immediately.

its attainment of the
IECEx Certification.
IECEx is the International
Electrotechnical Commission’s
(IEC) certification program for
equipment and services used in
explosive atmospheres. A globally
recognised standard, it ensures that
products and services comply with
the highest safety requirements for
use in hazardous environments.
In November 2024, Elta, a leading
specialist in air movement
equipment, achieved the certification
following a two-year auditing period.
Eurofins Scientific, a UKASaccredited

barriers to change. That’s where SHW Live
comes in. It is the only platform that provides
accessible, affordable, and sustainable inperson
opportunities for industry professionals
to connect.
In the world of health and safety, fire risk
management and workplace wellbeing, Safety,
Health and Wellbeing Live and Fire Safety Live

Farnborough has been synonymous with
pioneering triumphs for over a century and
provides the perfect home for SHW Live in the

operating in
potentially explosive
atmospheres such as

Although IECEx certification is
voluntary for manufacturers,
governments in Australia, New

Elta’s journey to IECEx certification
involved rigorous testing and

The Fire Safety Event Review
The Fire Safety Event
2025 – NEC Birmingham
The leading Fire Safety Event is scheduled to
return to the NEC Birmingham from 8th-10th April
2025. The event is dedicated to supporting fire
safety professionals in achieving and maintaining
the highest fire safety standards. It will feature
suppliers and manufacturers who will showcase
their extensive range of products.
The FSE event was launched in 2016 and has
exponentially grown as a true advocate for fire
safety, education, and training. With an expected
footfall of over 12,000 visitors, multiple seminars,
and live demonstrations, the FSE looks to provide
a more comprehensive and detailed program that
supports and promotes stronger fire safety.
The FSE provides an environment where the latest
advances and knowledge of fire safety can be
accessed, however the greatest opportunities lie in
networking. In previous events, the chance to mix
and learn from other professionals in the industrial,
commercial, and public sectors was invaluable and
the FSE recognised this. At the end of each day of
the 2025 event, visitors, partners, and exhibitors
will congregate in the Networking Café to share
knowledge, experience and work via the Connect+
Live hosted meetings program. This program will
foster interactions with digital and online activities
to encourage stronger knowledge share in an
informal background.
Education is at the centre of the Fire Safety Event.
Delegates can attend the three separate theatres
within the event that offer CPD accredited education
delivered by experts in fire safety management. The
agenda offers seminars based on three facets of fire
safety that delegates will find invaluable.
The Fire Safety Leaders’ Summit brings industry
leaders together to discuss the products,
innovations, safety standards, and compliance
regulations that are essential to modern Fire Safety.
There will be sessions such as how to shape
the future of fire safety, how due diligence can
build a safe environment and residential personal
emergency evacuation plans.
The Innovation and Compliance Theatre will focus
on industry best practices, standards, and fire
safety regulations. Compliance is key to fire safety,
and this is shown in sessions that look at subjects
such as how are compliant products certificated
within the smoke protection industry, domestic
fire safety hidden truths, and how to build a safer
environment.
The Passive Fire Conference addresses the
fire safety measures that are integral to a built
environment and general passive fire protection
topics. These will include subjects such as fire safety
products, installation and inspection of fire safety
equipment, and the design and digital innovations
that are changing the management of fire safety.
The Exhibition Zone will have over 250 exhibitors
who will promote products and solutions in Fire
Safety and give an opportunity for delegates to
engage in networking with other professionals.
The exhibitors offer a unique perspective on
differing but essential aspects of fire safety.
Hochiki has been world-class leaders in fire safety
for over 100 years. The company has led the
design and manufacturing of cutting-edge product
solutions, and its innovative commercial and
industrial life safety products and systems have
garnered worldwide attention. Hochiki are the
benchmark for reliability and integrity within fire
detection, emergency lighting and leak technology.
BLE Smoke & Fire Curtains have manufactured
smoke and fire curtains for over 30 years. The
curtains are designed prevent smoke inhalation
and control the spread of fire within the workplace,
ensuring safe extraction of personnel.
The Fire and Evacuation Services (F&ES) was
established in 2021 and operates within the
UK and internationally as a private fire service.
Staffed by operational firefighters, the service was
developed to assist in fire safety needs in events
and businesses. To become business compliant
in fire safety, F&ES offer courses in becoming a
workplace fire warden and additional courses for
fire extinguisher training.

Real firefighters, real experience: The future
of waking watch & evacuation management
Fire & Evacuation
Services is a private
fire service offering a
range of comprehensive
training and fire safety
solutions to businesses
around the UK. The
in-house team come
from a background of
frontline fire-fighting
expertise, including Fire Officers and Incident
Commanders, with over a century of combined
collective firefighting experience.
Introducing Waking Watch – an early warning
system designed to ensure residents have adequate
time to safely evacuate the buildings in question.
Waking Watch is a method of safety patrolling by
highly trained personnel across all floors and the
external perimeter for 24 hours a day. In the event
of a fire, the staff can raise the alarm quickly with
the emergency services and commence evacuation
management, to ensure the safe exit of all residents.
Fire safety has become a critical focus in reinforced
building standards, particularly in the wake of the
Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017. Since the COVID-19
pandemic, numerous companies have emerged
offering Waking Watch services. However, most
of these providers are security firms that lack
the hands-on experience and expertise that only
professional firefighters can offer.
Fire & Evacuation Services’ team consists of
experienced Firefighters with over 100 years of
UK company Ciqurix, have been designing,
developing and manufacturing innovative,
revolutionary video fire detection since 2012.
Boasting a global network, Ciqurix’s fire detection
solutions stand-out in industries and environments
where traditional systems are inadequate.
The company specialises in cutting-edge security
solutions that revolutionise global safety standards,
often making existing systems obsolete. Ciqurix
products are designed for seamless integration
with current hardware, eliminating the need for
costly overhauls while significantly reducing
security and fire response times. With simplicity at
its core, these versatile solutions work indoors and
outdoors, across short or long distances, without
requiring complex integration.
One of its most prolific products is the CORE
video flame detection system designed by Chief
combined frontline experience – actively responding
to and operating inside burning buildings. This
unparalleled expertise sets them apart, as no other
company in the industry can match their level of
firsthand knowledge and situational awareness.
The question then becomes: If you’re investing in
a Waking Watch, why wouldn’t you choose a team
with real, life-saving experience inside burning
buildings?
Fire & Evacuation Services has a trusted
Evacuation Management system that involves
wardens conducting 24 hour waking watch patrols
to ensure communal areas are kept clear from any
obstructions and combustible items.
Some other responsibilities of the fire wardens
include monitoring escape routes and fire exits to

Established in 1946 as Simpkin Machin, BLE was
founded in the late 1980’s. The company shifted
from industrial lagging to producing fixed fire
curtains and later expanded into automatic fire
and smoke curtains in the 1990’s.
The BLE Smoke and Fire Curtains are designed to
operate separately or together based on what an
individual building requires. They are put in place
to give residents, visitors and workers more
time to evacuate the building. Alternatively, a fire
curtain ensures complete fire separation between
building zones and often protects open stairways
for safe escape.
Though safety is the common goal, there are
notable differences. Each curtain is made
from dissimilar materials and evaluated with
specific safety ratings in mind. A smoke
curtain is intended solely for smoke exposure,
whilst a fire curtain is meant to withstand
higher temperatures associated with direct
exposure to fire. This is why fire curtains are
built to be exceptionally durable and withstand
temperatures up to 1,100 o C and up to 4hrs.
BLE fire curtains offer top-tier fire resistance
and containment properties, easily fitting into
any fire safety system. Approved to the highest
international standards, the modular fire curtains
suit all building layouts. Manufactured under ISO
9001:2015 certification, each curtain undergoes
rigorous testing to meet BS, EN, and UL
standards, ensuring global design compatibility.
The gravity fail-safe deployment has a high
technical specification and includes features that
integrate with building management systems,
offering a cost-effective and flexible solution for
smoke and fire control.
BLE provides a world-renowned service, although
active curtains are discreet and not immediately
noticeable, you can find BLE smoke and fire
curtains in hundreds of airports, shopping centres,
theatres, businesses, and museums worldwide.
Notable mentions of major projects over the years
are the NEC building itself, the Grade 1 listed
building of the National Museum in Edinburgh,
train and metro stations in Warsaw and Delhi,
Cape Canaveral and Space X facilities, one-of-akind
buildings like the U.S. Embassy in London,
the stunning Bibliotheca Alexandrina and lastly,
the tallest man-made structure ever made known
as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Discover how BLE can enhance your fire safety,
we will be exhibiting at The Fire Safety Event

Fire Safety Services & Solutions Company of the Month
Need risk assessments for
the residential and property
changes in the UK fire safety
legislation 2025-2029?
We are delighted in this issue of Safety, Fire
& Security Journal to welcome Imperium
Fire Consultancy as our Fire Safety Services
& Solutions Company of the Month
It’s been a busy year for David Murphy, Director
of Imperium Fire Consultancy, a Northamptonbased
company offering specialised fire safety
services such as: BAFE SP205 certified Fire Risk
Assessments, BlueSky UKAS certified Fire Door
Inspections, DSEAR Risk Assessments, EV charging
installation Risk Assessments as well as general
fire safety consultancy. David brings over 23 years
knowledge and experience in design, installation
and management across active and passive life
safety measures and systems.
We caught up with David to review how the last
twelve months have fared for the company and to
discuss plans for 2025 and beyond, “2024 has seen
sustained, strategic growth of our core offerings,
as well as the introduction of new services. We
have seen a 30% increase year-on-year in sales
with key existing clients as well as new client sales
direct and indirect. Our philosophy is simple: Stick
to what we are good at, never over promise, never
under deliver, integrity, honesty while keeping
communication and support open at all times. Our
client base is threefold: working in partnership
with fire alarm/fire safety providers as a specialist,
facilities management and lastly direct through the
likes of Property Management Companies (PMC),
residential care and other commercial businesses.
“Over the last few months alone, we have carried
out many EV charging installation risk assessments
for several PMCs, fire door inspections for major
FM clients, commenced a new Scottish contract
of over 80 sites for a nationwide residential care
company, as well as deliver services to a diverse
range of clients including hospices, residential
blocks and student accommodation.
“Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Electric
Vehicles and E Bike/E Scooter Lithium-Ion Battery
fires have seen a significant increase in the news
reporting this year and continue to do so as the
world decreases its dependency on fossil fuels
and move towards green fuels. Like all new
technologies though, they carry inherent risks. EV
charging installation Risk Assessments continue to
gain very good traction in an industry where there
are presently no defined codes of practice or little
thought given to fire safety by installers and some
clients alike. Insurers and HSE are seeing this and
there is a strong move by them ensure the risk
assessments are being now carried out. Failure
to do so could significantly increase premiums
or in some cases, see them withdraw insurance
altogether.”
Another concentrated growth area has been in
DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive
Atmospheres) Risk Assessments.
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive
Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) puts
an onus on employers to contractually control
and mitigate the risks associated with fire safety,
explosions and corrosive metal substances and
protecting workers and members of the public.
DSEAR requires a Risk Assessment of all workplace
activities that involves the aforementioned, with
subsequent measures that eliminate or reduce
identified risks, provide procedures and equipment
to deal with emergencies and accidents, provide
information and training to employees and mark
zones where explosive atmospheres may occur.
“DSEAR risk assessments are increasing, with HSE
recommending updates followed-up every 3-5
years and the list of dangerous substances and
processes are growing every year.
“Imperium Fire Consultancy originally started
out offering Fire Door Inspections and Fire Risk
Assessments but the company’s remit has
diversified over time to meet accommodating risk
assessment needs across their client sectors.
“The landmark publication of the Grenfell Tower
Inquiry phase 2 Report in September concluded
that the tragedy was avoidable, with grave failings
across the board. Blame was laid at the door of
multiple organisations such as the local and main
government departments, private commercial
businesses, fire and rescue service, TMOs etc.
“Fire safety is now understandably of paramount
importance across many sectors, with competency,
experience, honesty and transparency now
required. For example, Fire Risk Assessments take
time and cannot be rushed and yet certain sectors
still see these as a race to the bottom. They are not
tick box exercises! We often state that for every
hour spent on site, we will often spend 2-3 hours
write-up time after, then making sure we get it right.
I spend a huge amount of time and energy ensuring
all customers are happy with our deliverables. This
means delivering reports and survey documents
on time and within specification. Great emphasis is
made on maintaining key relationships but always
with high ethical and moral standards.”
Imperium Fire Consultancy is looking to continue
growing in niche sectors in 2025. This includes
the Property management sector, residential and
care home sector, green energy markets (BESS
and PV Farms) as well as the education sector. On
the back of this, continuing to educate and ensure
the business keeps up with the ever-changing fire
safety landscape.
“The UK body of fire risk assessors is a specialised
group and the future industry and government
changes, like competency-based codes of practice,
will be paramount to ensure that the identification
of hazards, delivering of precise information on
effective fire safety measures, and a firm grasp of
how to mitigate or prevent the likelihood of firerelated
incidents are key.
“Imperium Fire Consultancy has completed the
latest higher risk buildings fire safety course, and
in line with these changes and we’re interested in
working further with the property and residential
sector. We will be exhibiting at the National
Landlord Investment Show at Old Billingsgate,
London on the 19th March, 2025; we’d love to meet
interested parties from across the sector.”

Fire Detection Company of the Year
Protecting people with high
quality life safety products
In this issue of Safety, Fire & Security Journal,
we are pleased to feature Hochiki as our
Fire Detection Company of the Year
and stay at the forefront of innovation. Overall,
we are pleased with our performance in a
competitive landscape. While specific figures
are commercially sensitive, we can say that our
products have shown resilience, and demand
remains strong across our key markets.”
Hochiki’s focus on quality, innovation, and longterm
reliability has always set them apart from
the competition. By prioritising rigorous testing
to exceed industry standards, Hochiki works
hard to consistently deliver a peace of mind to
its customers.
Nathan Hudson
Hochiki was first established in Tokyo in 1918,
and over time, it has grown exponentially
to become a global-leading manufacturer
of commercial and industrial fire directions
solutions. In 1972, the Hochiki America
Corporation was founded, followed in 1993 by
the newest division: Hochiki Europe.
For over 100 years Hochiki has led the way in
the design and manufacture of innovative life
safety solutions. Its leading edge commercial
and industrial fire detection and emergency
lighting products have acquired global
acceptance as the benchmark for high-integrity
and long-term reliability.
With global group sales turnover exceeding
£400m, Hochiki is a wholly independent,
multinational, publicly listed company with
over 2,000 employees working across six
manufacturing plants, 38 sales offices and 14
subsidiaries.
Its ongoing commitment to manufacturing
innovation ensures customer satisfaction and
its production facilities in Japan, the USA and
Europe offer international continuity in quality,
service, and supply.
Hochiki Europe manufactures and distributes
products to Europe, the Middle East, India and
Africa, with a strategic focus on fire detection
systems, wired and wireless products and
emergency lighting. We managed to speak with
Nathan Hudson, Sales and Marketing Director,
Hochiki Europe, who briefly described how the
last 12 months have been for the company.
“The past year has been one of growth and
adaptation, with a focus on reinforcing our
commitment to high-quality fire detection and
safety standards. Despite a challenging market
environment, the whole Hochiki Europe team
has worked to meet evolving customer needs
“Every time we talk to our customers, one of
the most repeated phrases we hear is just how
easy they are to install while also being known
for their durability and precision engineering,”
stated Nathan.
What Nathan is referring to here is Hochiki’s
two recent product launches that have further
enhanced the company’s commitment to fire
safety: FIREscape Nepto Emergency Lighting
and the ACD multi-sensor ranges.
FIREscape Nepto is the latest generation of
intelligent, self-testing and self-monitoring
emergency lighting system. This unique,
cost effective and fully compliant emergency
lighting system is based around an addressable,
emergency lighting control panel and features
addressable, self-contained LED luminaires
and exit signs. Its extra-low operating voltage
together with its ability to continually selftest
and monitor itself makes installation and
maintenance of the system quick, easy and less
costly compared to central battery or mainspowered
systems. This is best green solution
as Hochiki has also considered the useful life
of the entire emergency lighting system, from
manufacture and installation, right through to
recycling. What’s more, using the FIREscape
Nepto’s standard LED luminaires means the
units consume less than 0.5W when charging,
and once the units are fully charged, they only
consume 0.1W.
The FIREscape Nepto range offers exceptional
flexibility, allowing the system to be tailored and
configured to suit any installation requirements.
Additionally, Nepto control panels can be
networked, enabling centralised management
and protection for extensive, multi-building
sites.
Furthermore, photometric data for the
FIREscape Nepto units have been third-party
approved and verified enabling the installer to
design an aesthetically pleasing emergency
lighting system which meets all legislative
requirements, for building owner’s total peace
of mind. Additionally, the range also includes a
variety of accessories, including an I/O unit and
a common luminaire/exit sign mounting base.
Secondly, the Addressable Multi-Sensor (ACD)
with CO Detection is marked as the most
sophisticated multi-sensor with smoke, heat
and CO sensing elements that is completely
unrivalled by its competitors. The ACD operates
with 24 modes, a CO cell designed for up to 10
years life expectancy, and the ability to detect
16
SFH is sponsored by PEVA UK – see them on pages 26-27
Fire Detection Company of the Year
the threat of COHb poisoning.
The ACD is also enhanced for false alarm
reduction. In the modes featuring the Reduced
False Alarm function (+RFA), the sensor will
automatically adjust the sensitivity of the optical
sensing element over time, learning from its
surrounding environment from the moment of
installation.
Its flexible settings ensure that each mode
utilises different fire detection technologies
either in combination or individually to generate
a fire condition. The ACD operates on Hochiki’s
world renowned, robust and reliable, ESP
open protocol, giving specifiers, installers and
end users an open choice on system design,
installation and maintenance, as well as
complete control over costs. Hochiki also offer
a UL approved variant, the ACD-V. This version
has 16 fully approved operational modes and
is fully compatible with today’s enhanced
FireNET Plus Control Panels and Loop Explorer
II Software.
Hochiki’s unwavering dedication to advancing
fire safety is something to be admired, and this
award only motivates the company as a whole
to continue innovating, setting the highest
standards in the industry. Hochiki place a large
part of its success on its ability to form strategic
and long-lasting partnerships. Nathan described
some notable customer success stories the
company received in 2024.
“The first of two projects was based in Qatar,
where we collaborated with Fire Cloud Qatar
to secure Outpost Al Barari, a luxurious resort,
using our Ekho Hybrid wireless system. This
project illustrated the flexibility of our solutions,
as the wireless technology seamlessly fit
the resort’s unique, high-end design and
requirement to change layouts with the everchanging
desert environment. Both projects
underscore our dedication to delivering tailored,
effective fire safety solutions in diverse settings.
“The second project was based in Belfast,
where we partnered with 365 Fire to protect
the historic Print Works building, a Victorian
warehouse dating back to 1890, by installing our
reliable ESP range of fire detectors. This project
highlighted our ability to integrate advanced fire
detection within heritage sites, preserving safety
without compromising architectural integrity.”
The Titanic Distillers, Belfast’s first distillery
in nearly 90 years, opened in the historic
Pumphouse building, presenting unique fire
safety challenges due to the flammable whiskeymaking
process. Fire safety specialist Atlas
World installed a tailored system using Hochiki’s
advanced fire detection technology.
Hochiki’s ESP multi-sensors and optical
sensors were chosen for their ability to adapt
to environmental factors like steam and heat,
reducing false alarms. Discreetly designed
loop-powered sounders and beacons provided
effective alerts in noisy areas while maintaining
the building’s historical integrity. Despite supply
chain challenges, Hochiki ensured timely project
completion, earning Atlas World’s trust and
becoming their preferred supplier.
This project underscored the importance of
collaboration between heritage experts, fire
safety professionals, and technology providers,
and ensured modern safety standards were met
while preserving the site’s history.
Going into 2025, Hochiki will continue exploring
new ways to improve user experience and
system integration while keeping an eye on
enhancing safety, reliability, and ease of use in
both existing and new environments. One area
in particular that Hochiki is keen to continue
integrating into its products and manufacturing
processes is sustainability.
Nathan expanded on this, “We have
established a dedicated sustainability team at
our headquarters in Japan, which is driving a
comprehensive global sustainability strategy.
This team is focused on key areas, including the
use of eco-friendly materials, waste reduction,
and optimising our manufacturing processes
to reduce our environmental impact while
upholding our high standards for product
quality. A great example of this would be with
our FIREscape Nepto range which is produced
from fully recyclable materials and incorporates
energy-saving LED technology that helps to
reduce CO 2 e emissions.”

The 100% wireless,
scalable, intelligent
solution rapidly detects
and alerts users to
signs of smoke or fire,
while being resilient to
false alarms.
Inside and Outside
The SITENET range has been extended
to include devices designed to be
more aesthetically suited for internal
environments, such as modular buildings,
often required on a construction project.
While the existing SITENET range has been
successfully used for both internal and
external purposes, Bull Products’ SITENET
has now evolved to include additional
solutions optimised for internal temporary
spaces, providing a professional, modern
and slimline appearance. This enhancement
is particularly relevant for spaces such
as office environments, offering robust
performance and reliability for both indoor
and outdoor settings.
The new devices are designed with the
same attention to detail and performance
as the existing range, ensuring reliable fire
detection and alarm
capabilities. With
this expansion, Bull
Products continues to
set the standard in fire
safety technology.
Cygnus Mesh Analyser
The new Cygnus Mesh
Analyser enhanced
diagnostic tool aids
the commissioning
and maintenance
process for the, EN
54 certified and 100% wireless SITENET fire
detection and alarm system. It delivers a
graphical display of mesh signal strengths
and connection paths for each device in
the system. Additionally, the Cygnus Mesh
Analyser can show the history of how the
devices have joined the network and their
previous connections to the network. The
software displays the structure and strength
of the wireless mesh network and suggests
actions to enhance the performance of the
system further still.
The software is utilised by our expert
engineer team nationwide when installing
and maintaining the SITENET system. It is
also freely available for our trained installer
partners to install and is easily loaded with
the mesh file from the SITENET control
panel. The outcome is a more efficient
installation and commissioning process,
ensuring installers and end-users have a
robust and stable network.
Cygnus ALERT
The Cygnus ALERT notification and
monitoring platform is a Cloud-based
solution designed to strengthen site safety
and seamlessly integrates with SITENET.
Cygnus ALERT is a subscription-based Cloud
portal solution, accessed through a 2G and
4G cellular hardware module, with easy user
management and notifications provided
through the Cloud portal via a Windows
browser or intuitive, user-friendly android
app. The ability for integrators to assign
engineers and also end users provides
enhanced support not only to the integrator
but also added benefit to on-site managers.
Designed for seamless integration with the
SITENET range of fire detection and alarm
systems, the Cygnus ALERT module can
be fitted into the SITENET control panel
on-site during installation and can also be
retrofitted into pre-existing installations.
Real-time information is automatically
communicated to site administrators through
the cloud portal to the app and via SMS,
enabling prompt action to be taken, thereby,
enhancing response times.
Each control panel allows for one module
to be installed. The Cloud portal can view
and notify on multiple sites, this level of
scalability ensures that the Cygnus ALERT
platform is adaptable to a wide range of
applications. It can also remotely display
system information once a fault is detected
to provide more in-depth detail on the issue,
such as, battery status faults, mesh status,
fault history.

The No Falls Foundation, the first and
only UK-based charity for the work
at height sector, is proud to have
launched its first ever ‘No Falls Week’,
a powerful campaign dedicated to
promoting safe working at height.
Taking place between 13 and 17 May
2024, No Falls Week's mission was
simple yet crucial; to raise awareness
about the importance of safe working
at height, prevent falls and ensure
everyone that works at height comes
down safely.
It is estimated over 1 million
businesses, and 10 million workers,
carry out work involving some
form of working at height every
year. No Falls Week will provide the
opportunity for organisations across
all sectors to place a focus on work
at height safety.
Falls from height are consistently the
leading cause of workplace fatalities
in the UK, with 40 people losing
their lives at work due to a fall from
height in 2022-2023. Latest figures
from the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) show that falls from height
were responsible for a third of all
workplace deaths last year, up from a
quarter the year before.
As awful as the fatality statistics are,
there are an even greater number of
non-fatal injuries resulting from a fall
from height, with over 5,000 people
in Great Britain having been reported
injured at work in 2022/23.

Aladdin EasyFit Isolator allows new metering
technology to overcome challenges for South
West Water Customers
South West Water (SWW) has announced
a successful collaboration with Kier Group
to improve the efficiency of water meter
installations. This partnership has addressed
a previous hurdle for some customers where
there is no isolation, or the isolation valve has
seized or failed.
The key to this success lies in the utilisation
of Aladdin EasyFit Isolators. These innovative
isolation valves act as a crucial tool for Kier
Group’s metering team, allowing them to
install meters in situations that would have
previously resulted in a frustrating ‘unable to
meter’ feedback for the customer.
Wendy Coomber, SWW Metering Manager at
Kier Group said, “By implementing Aladdin
EasyFit Isolator valves, Kier Group has
expanded its capabilities to serve a wider
range of SWW customers and ensure they
benefit from having a water meter.”
The use of water meters is crucial for both
water conservation and accurate billing.
By overcoming the stopcock obstacle, Kier
Group and SWW are demonstrating their
commitment to providing efficient and
accessible metering solutions for all their

Building engineers will save
more lives than doctors
A leading respiratory
illness expert has
claimed that facilities
management and
building services
engineering will have
a greater influence
on worldwide human
health and wellbeing
than the medical and
social care professions.
Dr Philip Webb, chief
executive of Respiratory
Innovation Wales (RIW),
told a technical briefing
hosted in London by
the CIBSE Patrons that the huge
scale of the indoor environmental
quality (IEQ) crisis meant that greater
investment in building and facilities
management would be more
effective than medical treatment
in reducing excess deaths related
to respiratory, cardiovascular and
mental health conditions.
He called for a fundamental
reassessment of the way public
money and resources were allocated
to address the areas of greatest
need, pointing out that air quality
was responsible for higher numbers
of excess deaths than the COVID-19
pandemic, cancer, heart disease and
mental health combined. However, it
Airzone HVAC control &
integration solutions
Airzone, Europe’s leading
manufacturer of HVAC control
and integration systems has
announced a formal UK launch.
The strategic decision comes at
a critical time for the UK in terms
of remaining on track with the
government’s net zero target.
Founded in 1997, Airzone has
gained industrywide recognition
for creating solutions that limit
energy used to heat
and cool buildings
– one of the most
significant contributors
to global CO 2
emissions.
Airzone proposes
to work with UK
HVAC installers, specifiers and
integrators to drive building
performance efficiencies to create
homes and commercial spaces
that provide the very best in
energy and cost-effective comfort.
To support the company’s growth
in the UK, Airzone has invested
in a designated UK-based sales
team. They will be working closely
with installers, specifiers and
integrators to provide the data and
receives a tiny fraction of the public
money and resources allocated to
health and wellbeing services.
According to data from Public Health
Wales, COVID-19 was responsible
for 38 deaths per 100,000 of the
global population, smoking annually
accounts for 180, and cancer 278,
but air quality is responsible for up
to 1,400 excess deaths per 100,000
every year.
Webb also pointed out that there
were 3,000 new occupational
asthma cases reported in the UK
every year linked to the air quality in
workplaces.

insights they need to ensure the
effective specification of solutions
that meet client requirements.
The team will also be promoting
solutions for multi-occupancy
commercial buildings, such as
hotels and offices, that provide
integration of heating, cooling
and indoor air quality to improve
efficiencies and occupier comfort.
The UK teams will be focusing on
Airzone’s residential solutions that
are designed to manage heating
including air source heat pumps,
as they become more prevalent

Wilo welcomes weeding
out of non-compliant
circulation pumps
Following revelations that the
Office of Product Safety and
Security (OPSS) found over 85%
of domestic heating circulators
it inspected last year were
non-compliant, distributors and
installers are being urged to look
out for ‘fake’ pumps as they could
pose a safety hazard to consumers.
The callout by Wilo,
the efficiency-first
pump manufacturer,
leads on from the
OPSS’ Delivery
report 2022-2023,
in which the UK
Government
department also
disclosed that it had
de-listed 38 domestic
heating circulation pumps from
sale.
Now, Wilo is urging distributors
and installers to think twice,
and check pumps hold the right
certifications and markings before
stocking or installing them in
homes and heating systems. The
manufacturer strongly advises that
if it is “too good to be true”, then
it is most likely non-compliant and
wants industry to spot the warning
signs.
Lee Tebbatt, Managing Director
of Wilo UK, said, “We’ve seen a
swathe of non-compliant pumps
make their way onto the market,
and in many cases, they are
manufactured to look like the real
deal. We welcome the work the
OPSS is doing to weed out these
fake heating circulation pumps, but
while the problem is still ongoing,
it’s imperative that distributors,
merchants and installers know how
to spot a fake.”

Hand Dryer Company of the Year
From hand dryers to fragrance systems: Velai
In this issue of Safety, Fire & Security Journal, we are pleased to feature Velair
Group Ltd as our Hand Dryer Company of the Year
Since 2012, Velair Group has supplied over 350
businesses with hand dryer packages, working
via partners and distributors who sell its range.
Knowing everything there is to know about hand
dryers, you’ll find their dryers in almost every
sector of the market, including those with the
highest standards – Food Manufacturing and
Education.
Known in the industry for providing innovative
products and solutions in the washroom arena,
we spoke to Matt Anderson, CEO Velair Group Ltd,
who explained to us how the last 12 months has
been for the company.
“The past 12 months have been exceptional
across the group. We’ve successfully completed
every key project we set out to, while acquiring
new customers and deepening relationships with
our existing ones by delivering the high-quality
products and services they’ve come to expect
from us. Our growth rate remains strong at around
20% annually, and we continue to consistently hit
and in some cases exceed our sales targets.”
“Alongside this, we’ve expanded the team,
introducing more structure and bringing in highly
skilled personnel to support our growth and
alleviate pressure on our existing staff, who have
been working incredibly hard. Looking ahead,
one of our immediate priorities is securing a
larger warehouse to accommodate our continued
expansion.”
We then asked Matt how sales have fared in
comparison to forecast:
“Sales have significantly outperformed our
forecasts, particularly following the acquisition of
Enviro-Save (UK) Ltd – a globally recognised, bestin-class
fragrance system distributor known for its
continuous fragrance Oxygen-Powered delivery
systems. This acquisition provided a substantial
boost in sales and, coupled with the ongoing
success of our hand dryer division, allowed us
to not only meet but exceed our projections. In a
challenging economic environment, where many
companies have struggled, we’re proud to have
remained resilient and continued to grow. Overall,
we’re extremely pleased with our performance.”
The purchase of Enviro-Save 18 months ago has
been transformative for the business. Before this
acquisition, Enviro-Save was generating close to
£1.2 million at the time of purchase and is now
exceeding £2 million and growing rapidly under
Velair Group. The fragrance system mentioned
by Matt was originally developed in Dubai and
has proven to be a phenomenal success. The
product is exclusive to Velair Group in the UK,

and complements its already strong hand dryer
offering, further strengthening its position in the
hygiene sector.
“Additionally, we’ve expanded into the electrical
wholesale market with our state-of-the-art panel
heaters and domestic ventilation products,
allowing us to serve a broader customer
base across multiple sectors,” added Matt.
“Interestingly, our fragrance and electrical
wholesale divisions are currently outpacing the
growth of our core hygiene business, likely due to
the limited number of companies in the washroom
sector and the challenges of competing with
continuous-revenue paper sales. Nevertheless,
our comprehensive packages – offering solutions
across hygiene and electrical markets – have been
very well received.”
Another product that has revolutionised the
hand drying sectors is the Plug & Play system,
developed by Velair Group as the world’s first
multi-dryer Plug & Play ® platform, named The
Terra4 Docking Station ® .
“The Terra4 Docking Station ® supports 75% of
our hand dryers. It allows for effortless servicing,
upgrades, and replacements without the need for
skilled labour – anyone can do it. This innovation
has played a major role in expanding our market
share and has helped us secure key partnerships,
including our global collaboration with Rentokil
Initial. It’s a unique selling point that continues to
set us apart in the industry,” stated Matt.
The Terra4 Docking Station ® is the first multi-dryer
Plug & Play ® platform, revolutionising hand dryer
technology with its innovative design and userfriendly
features. Boasting unmatched durability
and performance, once installed, the Terra4
Docking Station ® becomes a fit-and-forget product,
providing unrivalled convenience and reliability.
This platform allows any Plug & Play ® hand dryer
to be easily installed, upgraded, or replaced within
seconds, without the need for skilled labour.
What’s more, the Terra4 Docking Station ® is made
from materials known for their durability, rigidity,
abrasion resistance, and thermal dimensional
stability. Whether in a high-traffic washroom or a
demanding commercial environment, the Terra4
Docking Station ® and Plug & Play ® hand dryer will
deliver consistent, robust and reliable performance
day after day.
“The uniqueness of our Plug & Play ® Terra4 Docking
Station ® is a standout benefit – it offers unmatched
convenience, efficiency, and cost savings. Similarly,
our fragrance system is the only one on the market
that guarantees consistent and continuous fragrance
delivery for 30, 60, or 90 days. In a space where
many products are similar, these innovations provide
our customers with tangible advantages and have
been pivotal to our recent success,” added Matt.
The Terra 4 Docking Station® is compatible with
the Pebble Mini Entry Level Plug & Play®, Pebble+
Plug & Play that removes 99.9% of bacteria and
viruses, and the brand new for 2025 F4 Eco Plug &
Play. Watch out – the future of hand dryers is here!
With numerous achievements under its belt, Velair
Group remains driven to accomplish even more.
We asked Matt about the company’s short and
long-term goals.
“In the short term, our focus remains on delivering
exceptional service, technical support, and marketleading
products, supported by strong marketing
– core strengths we’ve maintained for over 14
years. Long term, we’re investing heavily in R&D
and innovation, with several exciting product
launches scheduled for this year and next. These
new offerings will further strengthen our market
position. Ultimately, our goal is to be the leading
company in the fragrance market, the number one
Ensuring sustainability remains a core part of the
business, Velair Group is proud to mark its fourth
consecutive year as a Planet Mark Certified business.
This is a fantastic achievement that reflects the
company’s commitment to sustainability and
reducing its environmental impact.
“Velair Group has achieved Planet Mark Certified
Year 4 – Business by reporting its measured carbon
emissions, reducing Scope 1, 2, and core Scope 3
emissions per employee (market-based) by 12.3%
compared to the previous reporting period, and by
committing to expand its measurement boundary
to achieve a full carbon footprint.”
“Sustainability is at the heart of our business, and
being recognised for our efforts to create positive
change means a great deal to us,” said Matt.
In closing, we asked matt how he felt receiving
this award on behalf of Velair Group and everyone
involved.
“As a company, we’ve never actively pursued
awards, so being named Hand Dryer Company of
the Year is truly special. Most of our recognition
has come via platforms like Trustpilot, where
we’ve received incredible feedback – particularly
around our service, which is a point of pride for us.
To be acknowledged for doing something we love
is a wonderful achievement and a testament to the
hard work and dedication of our team.”
“Everyone at Velair Group is passionate about
what we do – it takes a certain kind of person to
work here, someone who loves the business as
much as I do – and this award is for them. I’d like
to take this opportunity to thank the entire team for
their continued commitment.”

Material Handling Operations
Made Safer with Combilift
When choosing material handling equipment
for your loads and facilities, making a wellconsidered
decision is crucial. You should
consider factors such as effective and efficient
handling, financial cost, and sustainability, but
safety should be your top priority.
With advancing technology, it’s essential to
stay updated with market developments to
ensure you’re not falling behind due to relying
on outdated material handling equipment or
machinery.
Irish forklift manufacturer Combilift has over
26 years of experience in the material handling
sector and is an expert in assisting businesses
in maximising the capacity of their facilities,
enhancing efficient operations and most
importantly, making them safer.
Combilift has a
dedicated team of
R&D engineers who
continuously work on
creating innovative
solutions for safe, spacesaving,
and efficient
handling of industrial
loads. Their commitment
to innovation is evident
from the multiple patents
they have acquired over
the years.
Multidirectional forklift models such as those
in the C-Series and CB range are designed to
travel sideways while handling long and bulky
loads, for example, timber panels or steel
beams. The sideways function eliminates the
need for overhead carrying while navigating
tight spaces, which significantly reduces the
risk of injury.
This in turn allows for much better and costeffective
use of all available space which is
one of a company’s most valuable assets. An
additional safety feature is that these forklifts
are built with a very low centre of gravity,
allowing for a low-to-the-ground movement
of the load. The C-series also includes an
integrated platform, providing a stable base for
resting loads during transportation.
Combilift pedestrian
stacker range, such
as the Combi-WR4
and the Combi-
CS are also ideal
for handling long
loads as well as
pallets. Equipped
with Combilift’s
unique, patented
tiller arm, these
models guarantee
maximum safety for
the operator and
other people in the vicinity. The tiller arm can
be turned to the left or right and allows the rear
wheel to be turned parallel to the chassis and
back again at the touch of a button.
This allows the operator to remain in the safest
position when working in narrow aisles – at
the side of the truck and not at the rear as with
other pedestrian stackers. This reduces the risk
of the operator becoming trapped between the
truck and the racking and ensures full visibility
of the load and the surrounding area.

your material handling operations while
maximising your storage space.

The health & safety benefits
of using CaberShield Eco
In the wettest of weather, building
can carry on, with the H&S
team reassured regarding slipresistance,
supported by the fact
that the boards are able to accept
heavy traffic on a busy site without
the level of grip deteriorating.
Contractors can reduce the risks
of slips and falls, while ensuring high technical
performance, by selecting the upgraded version of
a popular flooring product from the range of West
Fraser, the leading UK manufacturer of engineered
wood-based panel products.
Able to withstand the vagaries of the British
climate, as well as being immune to the spills of
plaster or mortar that inevitably occur on site,
CaberShield Eco boasts all of the inherent qualities
of CaberFloor P5, as well as representing the latest
sustainable solution for creating high specification,

Act 2022 makes BICoF
registration mandatory for all
classes of building inspector,
working in both the public and private sectors, in all
types of buildings across England and Wales.
Whilst the BICoF does not provide an exhaustive
list of competency criteria, assessments under the
BCI certification scheme include a review of the
relevant qualifications, knowledge and experience
academic/technical qualifications, as appropriate
to each inspector’s role. Continuous professional
development is another important aspect, as
building inspectors must be reassessed every four

as a purpose built deck/platform.
As West Fraser describes it to the
industry, these new waterproof
panels ensure that contractors can “keep building
even with the roof off.” In fact, the manufacturer
now promises an extended 60 days’ durability
for CaberShield Eco if correctly fixed using the
recommended adhesive. So, in the wettest of

New HomeHub
Vericon Systems, a leading manufacturer of remote
technologies to manage and control essential
building services, has launched HomeHub, a
sophisticated in-property device that has been
specifically developed to help Housing Associations
and property managers monitor and manage their
resident’s living environment.
HomeHub, with its intuitive user-friendly
touchscreen, provides real-time visibility into
environmental conditions within a property, such as
humidity levels and alerting residents to potential
issues such as damp and mould, by assessing the
risk in each room every five minutes rather than
providing a general view over a 24 hour period.
Thanks to its intelligent machine learning, the
HomeHub system ‘learns’ the property’s unique
heating characteristics, enabling it to accurately
calculate the time needed to achieve the desired
temperature. This data can also help landlords and
property managers better identify properties with
inefficient heating systems or inadequate insulation,
providing valuable insights for optimisation and
improvement.
HomeHub enables direct communication between
landlords and residents, including proactive
communication with residents, available in multiple
languages, to address concerns or when an issue
occurs, with regular updates to provide tenants
with reassurance that the relevant parties are
working to resolve the issue.
In the event of maintenance or repair works being
required, the device’s Track My Repair feature
enables residents to follow their case with a simple
flow chart that updates once each milestone is
reached with detailed notes and information, and a
full audit log for both residents and landlords.

Scotland’s leading modern
university introduces
step-free access in its
cyberQuarter building
Abertay University, recently ranked as a top
modern university in the National Student Survey,
is setting an exemplary standard in terms of
accessibility by introducing step-free access across
all five floors of the cyberQuarter building, thanks
to Stannah lifts.
This lift retrofit and installation was awarded to
Stannah, who secured first place in the APUC
framework. This process allows the university to
award contracts without the need for a tendering
process, streamlining the project and ensuring topquality
work from a trusted provider.
Located in Scotland, the university formerly
known as the University of Abertay Dundee blends
traditional and contemporary design, with the
old college dating back to 1888. The university is
home to Abertay’s cyberQuarter, a cutting-edge
£18m cybersecurity research and development
centre. This state-of-the-art facility brings together
students, academics, and
organisations to collaboratively
address global cybersecurity
challenges.
The works
The existing lift in the building had
become increasingly unreliable,
with frequent breakdowns and
maintenance issues that disrupted
operations. This highlighted the
need for a modernised lift system
that could ensure consistent
performance and compliance with
current safety standards.
After a thorough evaluation by
Stannah, it was clear that the best
solution was to completely replace the old lift with
a new, Stannah Machine Room-Less (MRL) traction
lift. This type of lift not only meets all necessary
safety standards but also provides enhanced
efficiency and reliability, making it an ideal choice
for the university.
Stannah was responsible for the entire design
process of the new lift, ensuring it was tailored
to the building specifications and client’s needs.
They also managed all on-site works, overseeing
the removal of the old lift and the installation of the
new MRL traction lift.
The challenge
This project involved the complex task of removing
the existing and installing a new lift system while
the building remained a live teaching environment.
One of the primary challenges was ensuring the
safety of all visitors throughout the construction
process. This included keeping corridors clear and
free from obstructions, implementing rigorous
safety protocols, and maintaining minimal noise
levels to avoid disrupting classes. To address these
concerns, Stannah adhered to CDM (Construction
Design and Management) regulations.
Due to the fact that this was a live building site,
the project was completed on a strict three-month
schedule. During construction, step-free access
was available via the café lift.
An additional challenge was the removal of the
existing MRL lift to make space for the new system.
Stannah designed the new lift installation to match
the dimensions of the existing lift shaft, thereby
eliminating the need for additional structural work.
Only cosmetic decoration was needed around the
new landing doors.
Balancing construction activities with the daily
operations of the building
required meticulous planning
and coordination, showcasing
Stannah’s commitment to creating
a safe environment despite the
challenges.
The solution
With support and guidance from
Stannah, an MRL lift was selected
due to it being one of the fastest
and most efficient lift systems
available, providing a reliable
solution for students, teachers,
and visitors.
The 8-person lift features modern
controls with buttons set at
heights accessible for wheelchair users. This
630kg capacity traction MRL lift is equipped with a
gearless variable voltage drive, meeting EN81-
20/50 standards.
Requiring minimal space both inside and outside
the shaft, this type of lift is ideal for most building
applications. Its highly flexible design allows it to
fit into existing lift shafts of any size, making it the
perfect choice for this project.
The result
Enhancing accessibility and efficient operation
of the lift was an important factor at Abertay
University’s cyberQuarter building. Now, the new,
reliable lift supports the needs of the users by
providing full step-free access.
The new MRL lift meets all open protocol and
design requirements set by the client. The design
complements the university’s aesthetic, while
ensuring
enhanced
performance
and
reliability. The stainless-steel lift showcases a
modern car interior, featuring artificial granite and
user-friendly elements such as digital displays,
enhancing accessibility for all users. The client
chose options for the lift car interior from Stannah’s
brochure, including selections for the walls, ceiling,
flooring, and car operating panel.
An open protocol lift system means that customers
are not tied to Stannah for maintenance and repair.
The cyberQuarter building, which can
accommodate up to 500 people, will necessitate
daily use of the new lift. It will provide step-free
access for all users, including wheelchair users and
those with reduced mobility.
All Stannah lifts are certified according to the Lifts
Regulations 2016 (2016 No. 1093).
Customer feedback
Bob Cochran, Project Manager from Stannah,
said, “Enhancing accessibility and transforming lift
operations were the primary goals of this project.
Prioritising health and safety, along with effective
communication, was crucial as we worked in a live
environment. As a result, the lift replacement was
a great success, with completion occurring just 12
weeks after starting on-site.”
Leigh Black, Estates Project and Design Manager
for Abertay, said, “We’re thrilled with the lift
solution provided by Stannah. The new lift is a
perfect fit for our cyberQuarter building providing
a smooth and accessible experience for everyone.
The installation process was seamless and it’s been
great working with the Stannah team who used
their lift expertise to overcome any challenges.”

For the drivers, a brand-new app – GB Domestic
Hours, is a completely digitised upgrade to the paper
log books, allowing drivers to record and manage
their drivers’ hours directly from their smartphone.
CheckedSafe is the only UK company to develop and
launch the GB Domestic Hours app, bringing marketfirst
technology to UK vehicle fleets. CheckedSafe’s
portfolio of compliance tools – that includes the
much-celebrated Driver Licencing Checks, priced
at an unbelievable £1.60 per check and Fleet
Management Software – enables fleet managers to
efficiently oversee fleets of any size fully digitally –
eliminating the need for cumbersome paperwork.
In addition to vehicle compliance, CheckedSafe
provides a Lone Worker App designed to enhance
the safety of employees working alone. This app
allows lone workers to log their location and
complete risk assessments, ensuring employers
can monitor their safety effectively.
Ideal for those who work outside of normal working
hours, are remote from a central office, or even
for those who are not in frequent contact with
their employer, the CheckedSafe Lone Worker App
and monitoring suite is the number one App for
employers to ensure the safety of their employees.
Offering a completely customisable experience, the
system boasts an extensive library of DVSA, HSE,
Puwer, Loler, and UK Border Force check templates,
all of which can be tailored to suit the specific
requirements of your business. What’s more, if
a driver has no signal, defects can be conducted
from anywhere at any time. This is because all
failed vehicle compliance checks will automatically
generate a report which is stored in CheckedSafe’s
secure CMS, ready for further analysis.
Gary Hawthorne, Director & Co-Founder mentioned,
“Fleet managers can now oversee any size fleet with
mobile phones, rather than copious amounts of
paperwork (a laptop is useful to interrogate the data).
There is no need to store huge boxes of reports, plus
it’s all in real-time so any defects/issues can be resolved
quickly, reducing overall long-term costs and reducing
downtime as better repair planning can be achieved.”
All of this can be achieved for just £1 per vehicle
per week. Just think, how much more efficient
your business could be if your employees could
carry out customised vehicle checklists via a
downloadable app – even when drivers are off-grid!

Perimeter Security
FBS Hörmann Perimeter Protection
secures business park
The specialist Perimeter Protection division of
FBS Hörmann have recently completed a project
to help secure a business park in Guildford,
fitting a range of high security gates and fencing.
The business park, which is home to various
businesses and warehousing facilities, had
been suffering from anti-social behaviour and
increasing criminal activity during out of hours
and were looking for a more robust and longlasting
solution to their problems.
two automated FBS6000 high security swing
gates, GMS intercom entry for out of hours
access, auto exit, and a new pedestrian gate.
The secondary entrance has seen the existing
rising barrier replaced with a robust cantilevered
sliding gate and a pedestrian gate. A total of
86m of security fencing has also secured the
perimeter. The gates and fencing have all been
finished in RAL 6005 Moss green to blend with
the semi-rural location of the site.
FBS Hörmann were able to provide a full-service
solution from initial consultation, surveying,
product specification and installation through
to the final sign off, together with coordinating
with other security contractors working on the
project. The project also fell under Construction
Design Management where FBSH Hormann
acted as principal
contractor for the
whole project,
managing other
security contractors
throughout the
project.
Existing security at
the site was fairly
light, with very little
fencing. Replacing
rising bollards, the
primary entrance
to the site has now
been fitted with
The FBS Hormann team completed the
installation in under 4 weeks, with the project
including all of the necessary civil works for the
gate and fencing installation. The company also
worked with a specialist security CCTV company
to provide civil engineering needs for a number
of CCTV towers situated throughout the site.
Commenting on
the installation,
Thomas Kirk, Head of
Perimeter Protection
at FBS Hörmann,
stated, “The owners
and facilities
management of this
site asked us to look
at upgrading security
during a pre-planned
maintenance visit
made by one of our
service engineers.
Our technical
sales team then attended to discuss the site’s
requirements and problems they were having
with the current equipment in place, we then
specified the exact products needed to meet the
site’s requirements.
“Having access to a wide range of Perimeter
systems, including bollards, barriers, gates,
and fencing, meant we were able to specify a
solution to meet their very specific requirements.
We were also able to offer the assurance that all
of the installation team were fully trained and
qualified, and employed by FBS Hörmann.
“This project has been a great success,
illustrating how our teams and disciplines work
together to ensure deadlines and customer
satisfaction was upheld throughout the project.
Well done, team!”

Game, set, match: Jacksons Fencing serves security
at West Beach Tennis Courts
Jacksons Fencing successfully supplied and
installed its state-of-the-art EuroGuard ® Rebound
sports mesh fencing at West Beach Tennis Courts
in Whitstable, Kent. In partnership with LTA Tennis
Foundation, this installation marks a key milestone
in Canterbury City Council’s initiative to upgrade
local sports infrastructure while reinforcing
Jacksons Fencing’s reputation as a leader in
high-quality, long-lasting fencing solutions for all
applications including sports and recreation.
Addressing security and durability challenges
The key challenges for the fencing were multifaceted.
First, security was a priority. The courts
needed to be securely enclosed to prevent
unauthorised access and vandalism, yet the
boundary needed to remain welcoming and
accessible to the public.
Durability was another major consideration,
especially given the coastal environment, where
salty sea air and strong winds could quickly
degrade materials that weren’t up to standard. The
fencing had to withstand harsh weather conditions
while maintaining its integrity and appearance
over time.
A tailored fencing solution
Understanding the unique demands of the
project, Jacksons Fencing supplied and installed
EuroGuard ® Rebound sports mesh fencing, an
advanced system engineered specifically for
sports facilities. Constructed from galvanised
steel mesh and finished with a marine-grade
polyester powder coating in green RAL 6005, the
fencing provides superior resistance to corrosion,
ensuring longevity in the harsh seaside climate.
Its innovative mesh configuration allows for
excellent ball rebound, minimising disruptions
during play while maintaining clear visibility of the
surrounding landscape.
