EVENT WRAP-UPS
National Tennis League: Molik Playing for 2
Alicia Molik (pictured right) was playing for 2 as she
debuted for the Greenwich Giants (UWA/Reabold) on
centre court for the National Tennis League-Perth on
Wednesday evening.
The mum-to-be was radiating as she strutted on court
sporting a 7 month baby bump as she faced off against
another ‘baby’ of the game, seventeen year old Caitlin
Cridland from Ian Hutchison Real Estate (Hensman
Park/Midland).
The former No. 8 in the world displayed a ‘modified’ playing
style, limiting her court coverage and hyper-extensive
stretching to compensate for the new addition.
Cridland took advantage of Molik’s ‘unfamiliar’ game and cruised past the former great easily,
(4-1) (4-2).
“Perth tennis fans were really treated to something special this evening.” Tennis West
President Dean Williams said.
“What a fantastic reflection on one of Australia’s tennis greats to get involved in the NTL-Perth,
not to mention the phenomenal experience Caitlin was exposed to.”
“It really shows how much Alicia loves the sport and I congratulate her for coming out and
getting involved against one of our aspiring WA juniors”.
“Incredible commitment from the former number 8 in the world. A great day for Alicia and our
great game”. Williams said after Molik’s match.
When asked how she felt after the match Molik had this to say “I’ve been really lucky as I still feel
great. I always love coming out and playing with the other girls, so feel lucky to be a part of it. I
love the idea of a National Tennis League and the playing format suits me.”
It was however their opponents day, with Ian Hutchison’s Real Estate side taking out 5 of the 6
rubbers played on the evening.
Gordon Davies Real Estate v Cooling Towers WA
The other Women’s match for the evening saw Gordon Davies Real Estate (Dalkeith) obtain a
clean sweep of rubbers against Cooling Towers WA (Blue Gum Park). The onslaught begun
with Jessica Moore leading the charge against her inexperienced opponent Ivana Vojnovich.
The Williams star came thrashing out of the blocks on a vicious rampage, disposing of
Vojnovich (4-1) (4-0).
In the Men’s field the 130 strong crowd were treated to an extensive array of top tiered tennis,
with the gentleman of the game really stepping up their charge to the finals in Round 4 of the
inaugural event.
Ian Hutchison Real Estate v Macstiobhard
In a sensational display on centre court, Miles Armstrong from Ian Hutchison Real Estate
Page 5 of 21
(Hensman Park) edged out Macstobhard’s (Blue Gum Park) Zach Itzstein in a tie-break.
The level of play was exceptional with 2 serving powerhouses going head to head. After
Armstrong took the first set (4-2) Itzstein appeared to ‘acclimatise’ to Armstrong’s fierce serve in
the 2 nd , launching a number of blistering passing shots deep into the court to level the scores(2-
4) in the second.
It was however Armstrong who managed to overpower a very gallant Itzstein, closing it down
in a tie-break (7-3).
Ian Hutchison Real Estate went on to win the tie, 4 rubbers to 2.
Gordon Davies Real Estate v Greenwich Giants
Undefeated Gordon Davies Real Estate (Peppermint Grove) had a shaky start to their round 4
campaign, with Brenton Bacon dropping the 1 st rubber against an unforgettable display from
Andrew Roberts of the Greenwich Giants (2-4) (3-4).
Roberts (who has been absent for the past 2 weeks of play) dominated the court with his
electrifying forehand and extensive court coverage.
Despite the ideal start for the Giants, this was the first and last match they would claim for the
evening. Gordon Davies Real Estate steamrolling through the field undefeated.
Tennis Only v ERM Power
In the most anticipated match of the round, Tennis Only (Sorrento) took on ERM Power
(Wembley Downs). ERM Power’s Charles Williams performing a gallant comeback after losing
the first set to love, as he upset Hayden Gibson in a tie-break, taking the match (0-4) (4-2) (7-5).
After the first 4 singles matches were played the scores were levelled at 2 rubbers a piece.
Both teams went on to win a doubles match each before a count back was performed. Tennis
Only were determined victorious at the end of the night, winning 3-8-42 to 3-4-31.
The final 2 rounds are sure to be ecstatic tennis with 5 out of the 6 men’s teams still eligible to
make the finals with the Women’s championship still up for grabs.
The finalists of both the Men’s and Women’s ties will then head to the 2012 Australian Open to
play off against South Australia and Victoria in the NTL Finals.
Women in Tennis Foundation Cup & D’Arcy Slater
Cup
The 2011 Women in Tennis Foundation Cup was this year held at the Busselton Tennis Club
from the 6-8 October. 13 teams from 8 different country zones all made the trip to Busselton to
take part in the highly anticipated tournament.
Despite a few scattered showers the tournament was a huge success, with the girls
participating in plenty of tennis and receiving lots of opportunity to earn points for their team.
“South West A” were the eventual winners of the tournament, edging out their closest
competitors, “Great Southern A” by 20 points.
A huge thank you must go to the Busselton Tennis Club who were the perfect host venue for
the tournament – the courts were in fantastic condition, and the club and its members made for
a welcoming and enjoyable home-away-from-home for the girls and their families.
The 4 semi-finalists from the event have been invited to take part in the 2012 Interstate
Foundation Cup which will take place in Sydney in January. The following girls will be
representing WA:
1. Hayley McApline (Moore Districts)
2. Madeline Muller-Hughes (South West)
3. Rachelle Maestre (Midwest)
4. Sophie Tuckett (Great Southern)
The 2011 D’Arcy Slater Cup took place immediately following the Women in Tennis
Foundation Cup from October 9-11. Bunbury Tennis Club made their debut in hosting this
tournament, and did a fantastic job of doing so! Thanks to the tireless hours of the committee
and numerous volunteers, the tennis courts were in picture-perfect condition, and the ladies in
the kitchen did a fantastic job of feeding over 80 hungry boys each day!
South West A again took the honours in the teams event, edging out 15 other teams to claim
the D’Arcy Slater Cup. Central Districts A put in a valiant effort to claim the Runner-up title.
The 4 semi-finalists from this event will also make the trip to Sydney in January to participate in
the Interstate Foundation Cup. The following boys will be representing WA:
1. Thomas Vellios (South West A)
2. Colten Way (South Coast)
3. Kevin Banwell (South West A)
4. Paul Sutherland (Midwest A)
2011 Cliffs Esperance International
Western Australia’s Casey Dellacqua and Queensland’s Ben
Mitchell were crowned the 2011 Cliffs Esperance Tennis
International Champions.
Following a slight rain delay, the number one seed, Ben
Mitchell (QLD) took on the number 2 seed Matt Reid (NSW)
on court one. Coming into the match, Mitchell was the
frontrunner after knocking out local favourite, Brydan Klein
in the Semi-Finals the previous day.
He had a solid build up to the tournament winning his first
three matches in straight sets. He opened his finals bound campaign with a win over China’s
Peng Gao 6-1 6-3, before beating Scott Puodziunas 6-4 6-1. Mitchell then edged out the
number 6 seed Jose Statham 7-6 7-6 before knocking out WA’s Brydan Klein in 3 sets 6-2 4-6 6-
2 to advance to the final.
Reid had come off 3 consecutive 3-set marathon battles to pave his way to the final. He initially
took an easy win over Calum Puttergill in the opening round, before surviving a 3 set thriller
against Gavin Van Peperzeel 6-4 6-7 6-3. Matt was then forced to play 2 more consecutive 3
set epics, knocking Japan’s Kento Takeuchi out 6-4 2-6 6-2 before conquering Issac Frost 4-6
6-4 7-5.
Much to Mitchell’s delight, this is where the 3 set matches ceased. The Queenslander simply
outclassed Reid, smashing forehands deep into the court grazing the baseline time and time
again, taking the first set 6-1. In the second set, Reid seemed to settle and was much more
competitive, scrambling across the court to return Mitchell’s colossal serve.
The Sydney-sider soon however began to fade and Mitchell was able to capitalise and attack.
Claiming the championship in straight sets 6-1 6-4.
“I was really stoked to have a win in Esperance.” Mitchell said.
Matt Reid and Ben Mitchell with Esperance
Tennis Club President David Campbell.
I’ve been playing some good tennis and have reached a few finals, so to have a win here was a
great result for me. It’s strange to come into the court as the number one seed. It’s great for a
bit of confidence, but can also create more pressure as you start to build expectations.”
Next up was the Women’s Final. [2] Olivia Rogowska (VIC) vs. [3] Casey Dellacqua (WA). And
whilst the pair took out the doubles Final together the day before, the rivalry was fierce for the
Singles final!
Olivia had a smooth lead up to the finals, winning in straight sets the whole way through. In the
first round, she pushed past Kai-Lin Zhang 6-3 6-2, before outing New South Wales Monique
Adamczak 6-1 6-3. She managed to claim victory against Turkish star Pemra Ozgen before
cruising past USA’s Lina Litvak in the Semi’s 6-0 6-1.
Dellacqua cruised through the first round matches beating China’s Hao Ten Cheng 6-3 6-1 in
the opening round, Emelyn Starr 6-3 6-2 before knocking off China’s Yi-Fan Xu in the
quarterfinals 6-4 6-2. Dellacqua then came from a set down to knock out Sacha Jones the
number one seed and resilient opponent 2-6 6-4 6-2.
Despite Rogowska sailing through to the finals in straight sets, the final was another story.
Dellacqua took control from the opening point and didn’t allow Rogowska into the game
throughout the entire match. Dellacqua closed the number 2 seed down in straight sets 6-2 6-1.
QUOTE OF THE
MONTH
“We cannot always
build the future for our
youth, but we can
build our youth for the
future”
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
“Today was probably the best match I’ve played all week. Liv’s always a really tough competitor
so I was lucky to get the goods today.” Dellacqua said after her match.
“It’s been great to play in front of a really supportive crowd. My Uncle and Aunty live down here
and my Dad and his Girlfriend drove down to watch me play, so it’s really special to have that in
my home state.”
The Cliffs Esperance Tennis International is part of the 2011–2012 Australian Pro Tour, a
series of professional tennis events that bridge junior events and the ATP/WTA Tour, providing
an opportunity for players to earn their first world ranking points.
Gold Fields St Ives Tennis International
WA strengths (1) Casey Dellacqua and (4) Brydan
Klein took out the Women’s and Men’s titles
respectively at the 2011 Gold Fields St Ives Tennis
International to give the Pro Tour a Western waveoff
before the players departed WA for Port Pirie in Souh
Australia.
In the Men’s Final, (4) Brydan Klein (Rockingham)
fought back from 3-5 down in the first set to defeat
Queensland’s (1) Ben Mitchell 7-5, 6-3. Klein
dominated the match, not allowing Mitchell to enter,
let alone control the match. The fiery crowd favourite
rose to the occasion and displayed an animated
performance, securing the match in straight sets.
“I was wrapped to have a win at Kalgoorlie. I haven’t been well and wasn’t 100% as to whether I
would play or not. Ben played well and he’s a fierce competitor so I’m very pleased with the way
I played.” Brydan Klein said after his match.
Casey Dellacqua came into the tournament as the number one seed, the first time she has held
the top seed in the Pro Tour this year. Dellacqua cruised past fellow hitting partner Olivia
Rogowska in the Cliffs Esperance Tennis International Final one week prior, the WA starlet was
hungry to claim the 4 th title in as many matches.
Dellacqua was forced to conquer fellow West Australian and friend, Bojana Bobusic 6-2, 6-0 in
the Semi-Finals before disposing of Sydney’s Monique
Adamczak 6-2 , 6-2 in the final.
“I felt like I’ve been playing really well the past few
weeks. The more hitting I do, the easier I sink into my
shot so I’m looking forward to having a go at winning
my 5 th title in a row” Dellacqua said after the game.
It’s great to have a tournament in your home State, the
crowds are always great and I get to have some
downtime with my family and friends”.
Working with Children Check (WWC) Changes
On 1 July 2011, some new regulations regarding the Working with
Children (WWC) Legislation, applicable to the sport and recreation
industry, came into effect.
These changes include:
• Fees for paid employees and self employed people have
increased from $50 to $51.50. The fees for volunteers and students on unpaid
placement remain at $10.
• In situations where a person with two ‘jobs’ is employed in both paid and volunteer
child related work, the fee for paid work will be required. If a volunteer obtains paid
work during the three years that the WWC Card is valid, that person will not need to
apply for a new check until the card expires, unless there is a new offence of concern. A
current WWC Card remains transferable between paid and unpaid work.
• An exemption for students on unpaid placement who are under the age of 18 years
has been introduced.
It is important that you are implementing and complying with the WWC Legislation, which
includes keeping adequate records.
Club Health Check Incentives
Tennis Australia, in collaboration with The University of SA (CERM ©) have developed a series of
performance benchmarks to assist Australian tennis facility operators to annually benchmark
the performance of their tennis facility.
Why benchmark?
The indicators will become a critical tool for facility operators, Member Associations (MAs),
Government and Tennis Australia in determining where best to allocate resources and
assistance.
We also intend to develop a survey to benchmark the quality of services provided by tennis
facilities within Australia.
What are the benefits?
Affiliate and club benefits include:
• Benchmarking becomes part of the business and action planning process, which will
help improve management
• Invites research and recognition if a facility is below or above industry standards
• Provides the club with leverage for stakeholder assistance; for example, local
government grants
As an added incentive, the first 150 clubs who complete their Club Health Check by December
31, will receive a box of Wilson T1130 AO 4Balls. They will be distributed direct to the club by
early February.
For more information, or to complete the Club Health check visit the following website:
Blockbuster Washout
BLOCKBUSTER WASH OUT
The Brikmakers State Tennis League kicked off on Saturday 22 October with 8 Men’s teams
and 6 Women’s teams flocking to the State Tennis Centre to launch the opening round of the
season.
Australia’s number 2 and the World’s number 80, Matt Ebden, made a starring appearance
taking on last year’s Premiers Hensman Park and matching up against their number one, Miles
Armstrong. Ebden took an early lead and dictated play from the first to last ball. He managed
to shut down Armstrong’s rocket serve and take first set 6-1. Ebden came out firing in the
second set to take a 4-0 lead before play was suspended due to rain.
In the women’s, Williams local Jessica Moore debuted for City Beach, knocking out Caitlin
Cridland in straight sets.
Despite the standard of play and the electric atmosphere at the State Tennis Centre,
Page 16 of 21
unfortunately there was no stopping the rain. The rain crept in just after 3.30pm and play was
postponed, before the call was made at 5pm to cancel play for the day.
In the Juniors Blockbuster the following day, the level of play was remarkable. The stars of
tomorrow really stood up and put on a stellar display of competitive tennis in front of a healthy
crowd. Hensman Park’s young gun Rhys Johnson, starred in both the Seniors and Juniors
Blockbusters. The 16 year old disposing of Wembley Downs Craig Campbell in the seniors
before beating Dalkeith’s Linus Goh in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the juniors on Sunday. A total of
5 girl’s teams and 9 boy’s team make up the Junior State League competition, with Bunbury
Tennis Club joining the boy’s competition for the first time this year.
Thank you to all who attended, the coordinators, supporters and players. Good luck to all teams
participating in the nation’s biggest and most prestige pennants competition, the Brikmakers
Bojana Bobusic wins first Pro Tour
South Perth’s Bojana Bobusic (pictured in Orange) was
victorious in collecting her first Pro Tour title at the City
of Mount Gambier Blue Lake International.
Bobusic, the No. 8 seed had to knock off a number of top
seeds before claiming her first Pro Tour title by defeating
Korean Sung-Hee Han 6-3 6-2.
After her narrow loss to Olivia Rogowska in Port Pirie
last month, Bobusic capitalised on her top form to take the title effortlessly yesterday. Bobusic
did not lose a set on her run to the final.
The first round saw her whistle past Ashley Keir (ACT) 6-2 6-1. She went on to beat Karolina
Wlodarczak (Vic) 6-4 6-3 before knocking out New Zealander and No. 3 seed Sacha Jones 6-4
7-5. The semi then saw her defeat, for a second week in a row, No. 2 seed Isabella Holland (Qld)
6-2 6-3.
Though the win hasn’t sunk in for Bobusic, she was thrilled to have won her first Pro Tour title. “I
played well and I’m really happy to get the win,” Bojana Bobusic said.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but coming off last week and not being able to get the win and
having made a couple of other finals this year, I’m just really excited and happy I could come
away with it today.”
Tyra Calderwood (NSW) and Stephanie Bengson (NSW) took out the women’s doubles title
after No. 2 seeds Sally Peers (Vic) and Isabella Holland (Qld) withdrew due to injury.
