LYNNFIELD VS. PEABODY SCRIMMAGE
PEABODY — At first glance, you
might not think the Peabody and
Lynnfield football teams have much
in common as they prepare for the
2025 season. From roster size to
divisions and leagues to experience
at quarterback, it would be easy to
conclude that each team faces unique
challenges.
In reality, however, the Tanners and
Pioneers are in the same predicament
when it comes to one thing - how to
find the personnel to fill their respective
lines which were decimated by
graduation.
The Tanners return only one starter
on the offensive line, senior captain
Matt Dresser. The Pioneers’ lone
returning starter on either line is senior
captain Ben Gazit.
Saturday at Coley Lee Field, both
teams had a chance to evaluate their
preseason progress in a full-contact
scrimmage. Both coaches came away
with favorable first looks.
“I liked our intensity and physicality
today,” Peabody Head Coach Mark
Bettencourt said. “And I liked the fact
that our offensive line didn’t have one
holding call. The biggest question on
our team is our offensive line which is a
glaring hole. We have a lot of new faces
and kids that are green who are learning
and some kids who are going to get
thrown into the fire. Today was the first
day in the cooker and I thought they did
very, very well. No holding calls in our
first 40 plays is a huge step in the right
direction.”
“I saw some nice things from the
young, new offensive and defensive
lines,” Lynnfield Head Coach Pat
Lamusta said. “There’s still a lot of
learning to get to, but, in terms of effort,
that was really good. We just want to get
to the point where they’re all confident.
The size and the effort is there, but we
just want to make it the whole package.”
Bettencourt was happy with
the play of junior left tackle James
Hooper, junior right guard Bernando
Marciel and sophomore center Mark
Bettencourt.
“Obviously, there are tons of
improvements to make, but they all had
a good first game. The season is coming
really quickly with only two weeks
until our first game against Melrose,”
Bettencourt said. “We knew this was
going to be a project but we are in a
better place than we thought we could
have been, especially with the offensive
line.”
Bettencourt was also encouraged
by the running backs — and pleased
that “we held onto the ball and didn’t
fumble.”
“There is a fight right now for the
starting running back. I thought senior
Yardial Villanueva ran the ball well
and looked good in the first 10 carries,”
Bettencourt said. “Senior Andrew
Anthony-Santos also ran the ball well.
We protected the ball which made me
feel we may get there quicker than I
thought.”
Bettencourt also highlighted the play
of junior Jason Palladino, senior Alex
Vincent, junior Christ Jeune.
“We have a lot of competition for the
running back position and each one of
them brings something different, so it’s
a matter of combining all that together,”
Bettencourt said. “Depth is one thing,
but they are all fighting for a job.”
Bettencourt said the Tanners needed
to be quicker and also needed to “have
better reads - running backs finding
the right holes and cutbacks and lanes.
With the receivers, there were some
balls they didn’t get to on good throws
from (senior captain) Luke Maglione.
They stopped their routes, but their
blocking downfield was excellent..”
Bettencourt was “very happy” with
the defensive line.
“They were being disruptive keeping
offensive linemen off the backs of the
linebackers so they were free to roam
and make plays,” he said.
In terms of tackling, Bettencourt said
he gave a B- grade.
“We had real good contact, but didn’t
finish, we didn’t wrap,” Bettencourt
said. “We talk about hit-wrap, hit-wrap.
We also did some arm tackling. We
need to go low and stay low.”

LYNNFIELD VS. PEABODY SCRIMMAGE
Pioneers’ performance
was that it was “a good first
showing.
“But the reality check is
we need to be a lot better,”
Lamusta said. “The bar is still
high for a first-year starter
even if you’re a sophomore or
junior. They have to learn fast.
That was really the message.
Watch film on your own.
Focus on it when we watch
as a team and then let’s try to
get better next week and be
competitive against Melrose
in the next scrimmage.”
Lamusta said he was
pleased with “nice explosive
plays” on offense and the
defense’s energy.
“I liked the connection
between (senior captain and
quarterback) Matt Tracy and
(senior captain and wide
receiver) Luke DiSilvio on a
tunnel screen. Lucas Deraps
had a nice, long outside run
that he cut up and broke
a tackle,” Lamusta said. “I
thought defensively, our
pursuit was pretty good in
terms of everyone trying to fly
to the ball.”
He also praised the
“cohesiveness” among senior
Kevin Keyes and juniors Lucas
Deraps and Chase Bergeron.
“That’s also a young group,
but they’re pretty strong,”
Lamusta said. “I saw some
good knock-back from that
group. On the defensive line,
sophomore Marko Tare,
sophomore Alex Amico and
senior captain Ben Gazit also
looked good.”
On the flip side, Lamusta
said execution needs
improvement.
“I would say that is always
the No. 1 thing with the first
scrimmage,” Lamusta said.
“But I think when everyone
focuses a little more in
practice, they will know what
to do and do it faster.”
Tracy said the Pioneers
improved as the scrimmage
went on.
“The second offensive
series was much better than
the first,” Tracy said. “The run
game opened up pretty well.
The first series was definitely
sloppy all around. We just
have to be better.”
Gazit said the offensive line
was “a little shaky” at the start.
“We have a lot of new guys
who aren’t familiar with our
offense, so we have to get
them right and we’ll be good,”
Gazit said.
DiSilvio added that with
only three returning starters,
“it’s going to take some time
for everyone to come together.
We just need to keep gelling.”

12 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP LYNNFIELD THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL 2025
GAME 1
BILLERICA — At last, after a
Week 1 bye, the Pioneers’ football
team opened the 2025 season
Sept. 12 at host Shawsheen Valley
Technical School in Billerica.
That said, while the Pioneers
played a better second half in this
one, it wasn’t enough, losing 41-6
to the defending Division 5 state
champions.
Pioneer positives included
senior captain Matt Tracy finding
senior Dan Lemieux for a 4-yard
touchdown and also finding junior
James Pasquale for chunk-yardage
plays, senior captain Ben Gazit (4
tackles) holding his own on the
defensive line, and senior captain
Luke DiSilvio impressing in the
secondary, “playing tight coverage
against one of their top receivers,”
according to Lynnfield head coach
Lucas Deraps , left, and Matt Tracy
Pat Lamusta.
Statistically, the game appeared
to be relatively close with
Shawsheen holding a 189-176 edge
in total yards. But the Pioneers
couldn’t get their ground game
going, rushing for only 4 net yards.
Sophomore Spencer Brown led the
attack with 13 yards on four carries.
“We went in there knowing
it was going to be a difficult
matchup,” Lamusta said. “Things
just got rolling and our youth
hadn’t really gotten there yet. We
have a very young offensive line,
but it was really good for them to
see that level of speed, so that was
a silver lining in that they got to see
a really high quality team playing
with so much speed. The bar was
set high early.”
Tracy completed 10 of 18 passes
for 172 yards, while Lemieux
hauled in five balls for 122
yards and a touchdown. Brown
completed 1-of-4 passes for 27
yards. Junior James Pasquale
caught two passes for 40 yards.
Junior Joel Attabuto (11 yards) and
junior Xander Janicki (27 yards)
caught one pass apiece.
Tracy and Attabuto each had a
fumble recovery.
Deraps and Buoniconti had a
team-high nine total tackles, while
junior Xander Janicki had four
tackles and Joel Attubato had three.
Senior Kevin Keyse, sophomore
Marko Tare and senior Tobin
Ventolieri had two tackles each.

GAME 2
For Lynnfield fans, there
wasn’t much good to say about
this one.
In its home opener at
Pioneer Stadium, Lynnfield
struggled in all phases of the
game, losing to Wakefield 28-0.
Three untimely turnovers,
60 penalty yards, just five first
downs, and an inability to take
advantage of a couple of big
defensive stops early in the
third quarter proved costly,
dropping the Pioneers to 0-2.
“You have to convert and
we didn’t capitalize when we
had chances. There were some
situations where we needed
that one play, but I have to
give credit to the Wakefield
defense. They played well and
were pretty big up front,” said
Pioneers’ coach Pat Lamusta.
“Their quarterback was pretty
efficient and made all the
short ones. We’re still stying
to find our identity and figure
out how to give our kids more
opportunities and get our
younger linemen feeling good
about themselves going into
the Cape Ann League games.”
Trailing, 21-0, the Pioneers
came into the second half
energized, forcing two big
defensive stops to keep the
game within reach. A Lucas
Deraps sack and ensuing
punt on the Warriors’ first
possession gave the ball to the
Pioneers at their own 15. They
advanced to the 30 when junior
Xander Janicki (5 carries, 25
yards) broke loose for a 13-yard
pickup. A Wakefield penalty
and a couple of more yards
from Janicki put the ball on the
38, but the Warriors’ second
interception of the game ended
the drive.
The Pioneers forced a punt
on Wakefield’s next possession,
returned by senior Dan
Lemieux (2 carries, 34 yards)
27 yards to the Pioneers’ 47. An
8-yard rush by senior captain
Luke DiSilvio (4 carries, 21
yards) put the Pioneers in
Wakefield territory for the
first time in the game, only to
fumble it away.
“I thought coming out with
a little fire out of the half, it
was nice to get a couple of
stops and we could get back
in the game,” Lamusta said.
“Unfortunately, we just didn’t
take advantage.”
After that, Warriors’ running
back Jaden Fullerton did the
rest, allowing Wakefield (2-0)
to chew up the clock and put
the win in the bank. Fullerton
was a real workhouse, finishing
with 120 yards on six carries
and four TDs.
Lamusta highlighted the
play of senior captains DiSilvio,
Matt Tracy (5-for-15, 41 yards,
2 INT) and Ben Gazit (fumble
recovery).
“Luke played right up to
the end,” Lamusta said. “That’s
how he is. He just competes to
the very end. Ben has a lot with
playing both ways and Matt
just hung in there. We couldn’t
get our running game going to
free him up.”
Deraps led the defense with
12 tackles - six of them solo
- and one sack. Sophomore
Marko Tare (9 tackles) and
Lemieus (8 tackles) were also
solid on the defensive side.
Gazit (4 solo) and
sophomore Josh Bernabei had
seven tackles each. Juniors Joe
Rosa, Xander Janicki, junior
Cole Dixon and junior Chase
Buoliconti had four tackles
each and DiSilvio had three.
Sophomore Aaron Attubato
and senior Tobin Ventolieri
finished with two tackles each
Defensively, Deraps,
DiSilvio and junior Cole Dixon
had one sack each.
Prior to the game, a moment
of silence was observed in
memory of Chris Sakelakos,
a popular math teacher at
Lynnfield High and Peabody
native. He died Sept. 16 at the
age of 45 from osteosarcoma,
a rare and aggressive form of
cancer.
“That’s a tough one,”
Lamusta said. “It was an
emotional night. We knew him
well. Just an awesome person
in the Lynnfield community.
We are going to miss him. It
was nice that the family was
able to make it. Obviously, we
wish we had a better result, but
Sak would just be saying, ‘Keep
on fighting.’ He was such a fun
guy who loved experiences. I
Luke DiSilvio
got a chance to go out and have
adventures with his family and
got to know his brother and
sister and parents, and they are
just a really great family. We are
all pulling for his family right
now. He was an incredible
person and teacher who will be
missed.”
14 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP LYNNFIELD THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL 2025
GAME 3
After an 0-2 start, the
Pioneers’ football team
capitalized on its home
turf and got back on track
Oct. 26 at Pioneer Stadium,
taking down Ipswich 34-14 to
improve to 1-2.
“Our offense had some
really explosive plays which
got out in front early,”
Pioneers’ coach Pat Lamusta
said. “It was a great offensive
week for us. At times the
defense had a tough time with
their wing-T run game, but
we got some stops when we
needed them.”
Do-it-all senior captain
Luke DiSilvio (6 receptions, 147
yards) caught two Matt Tracy
touchdown passes, one for
69 yards and the other for 40
yards, and also scored a 55-yard
rushing touchdown. Tracy, also
a senior captain, completed 15-
of-18 passes for 140 yards with
two two touchdowns and two
interceptions. Junior Xander
Janicki (6 tackles) had a 32-yard
rushing touchdown and also
played well for the Pioneers on
both sides of the ball.
“Matt not only had some
explosive plays, but he did
a nice job intermediate and
short spreading the ball
around,” Lamusta said.
Senior Dan Lemieux (3
carries, 8 yards) helped the
cause with a 3-yard rushing
touchdown and also caught
three passes for 42 yards.
Junior Lucas Deraps caught
four passes for 24 yards and
also scored a two-point
conversion. Sophomore
Spencer Brown also saw some
time under center, completing
all three of his passes for 43
yards.
DiSilvio led the Pioneers’
ground attack with 45 yards
on just two carries, while
Tracy picked up 35 yards on
six carries. Janicki had two
carries for 27 yards.
Junior Joel Attubato (27
yards) and Deraps (24 yards)
caught four passes each, while
sophomore Mikey Hubbard
caught one pass for 35 yards.
Defensively, junior
Joel Attubato recorded an
interception and senior Tobin
Valentieri scooped up a
fumble.
Deraps had an impressive
game defensively with a teamhigh
12 tackles.
“He was all over the field
and played a great game,”
Lamusta said.
Senior Kevin Keyes had
seven tackles and a sack,
while junior Chase Buoniconti
was right behind with six
tackles. Senior captain Ben
Gazit, junior Xander Janicki
(sack), sophomore Jack
Tranfaglia, Tobin Ventolieiri,

GAME 4
AMESBURY — If you’re a Lynnfield
Pioneer fan, there wasn’t much to write
home about Friday night at Landry
Stadium as the undefeated Red Hawks (4-
0) ran wild from start to finish in a 52-8 rout
over visiting Lynnfield (1-3), ending a fouryear
winless streak against the Pioneers.
Trailing, 38-0, senior captain Luke
DiSilvio scored the only Lynnfield
touchdown. With 5:02 to go in the third
quarter, he hauled in a pass from senior
captain Matt Tracy and took it 66 yards
into the house, the final 3 yards dragging a
couple of Red Hawks on his back. Senior
Dan Lemieux converted the two-pointer
to cut the Red Hawks’ lead to 38-8, but that
was as good as it got.
“Matt kept plugging away and was able
to connect with Luke in the third quarter,”
Lynnfield coach Pat Lamusta said. “The
game wasn’t going our way and they didn’t
quit. Luke had some serious breakaway
speed shown on that catch. Our young line
continues to gain experience each week, so
we hope to build on the positive plays and
learn from the mistakes.”
Sophomore Spencer Brown came in
late off the bench and played one short
series and gave the Pioneers something
good to think about on the long drive
home down Route 95. He exploded for a
24-yard gain to pick up the only Pioneers’
first down of the game.
Junior defensive back Joe Attubato
played a strong defensive game. Lamusta
also thought Lemieux and junior Lucas
Deraps played well defensively.
“Dan and Lucas were all over the field
making tackles against Amesbury’s runheavy
offense,” Lamusta said. “Lucas made
a very athletic play when he intercepted
Amesbury’s quarterback on a two-point
conversion try. Dan also made some great
tackles on special teams.”
The Red Harks dominated all phases of
the game, scoring on each of their seven
possessions. They outgained Lynnfield
by a whopping 329-60 yard margin and
held a 12-1 advantage in first downs. The
Pioneers had no answers for Amesbury
quarterback Justin Dube (TD, 2 two-point
conversions) and the running back trio of
Joe Celia (3 TDs, two-point conversion),
Connor Scialdone (TD), and Joe Puleo
(TD).
Offensively, the Pioneers made just two
trips into Amesbury territory.
Marko Tare, left, and Lucas Deraps
Couple the Red Hawks’ textbook
performance with some costly miscues
on the part of the Pioneers in the first half
that handed Amesbury extremely short
fields for much of the night. A swarming
defensive line sacked Tracy four times in
the first half alone and held the Pioneers to
-27 yards.
All four Red Hawks’ drives in the first
half started in Lynnfield territory, three of
them inside the 30 with one of them at the
Pioneers’ 5-yard line after a botched punt
attempt.
A poor Pioneers’ punt on their first
possession handed the ball to Amesbury
on the Lynnfield 30. Dube started the
party with a 1-yard touchdown on the Red
Hawks’ first possession. Celia added the
two-point conversion to make it 8-0. Celia
added a rushing touchdown from the one
(Dube 2-point conversion) to double the
Red Hawks’ lead to 16-0.
The Red Hawks added scores from
Puleo (14-yard run) and Celia (2-yard run)
to go into the halftime break with a 30-0
lead.
While the second half saw better
execution on the part of Lynnfield, forcing
the Red Hawks to start on their own side
of the field every possession, it made no
difference. Short field or long, the Pioneers
simply had no answers for the Red Hawks’
trademark ground-and-pound game.
A bright spot for the Pioneers was the
kicking game in the second half, forcing
the Red Hawks to start inside their own
30 on every possession. Another positive
takeaway – no doubt – was the first-half
play of the Pioneers’ defensive line, which
hit the Red Hawks hard and made them
earn yardage.
“Senior defensive linemen Kevin Keyes
and Alex Morales more than held their
own against the bigger Amesbury offensive
linemen,” Lamusta said. “They did a great
job playing low.”
Junior Lucas Deraps had a big defensive
game with 12 tackles and an interception.
Lemieux also had a solid night
defensively with 11 tackles
Sophomore Marko Tare had six tackles.
Sophomores Aaron Attubato and Jack
Tranfaglia had four tackles each. DiSilvio
and senior Tobin Ventolieri had three
tackles each, while senior captain Ben
Gazit had two tackles.

BYFIELD — Lynnfield’s football team
couldn’t deliver in enemy territory, falling to
Cape Ann League foe Triton, 37-14, at Triton
Stadium on Oct. 10 and dropping to 1-4.
On the positive side, the Pioneers held an
advantage in passing yards, shutting down
the Vikings, 111-0, with each side picking
up 10 first downs. But on the downside,
Triton held a huge advantage on the ground,
rushing for 375 yards while the Pioneers
rushed for 99.
Each side turned the ball over once.
Penalties were also relatively even with
Lynnfield committing 10 penalties and
Triton committing nine.
Leading the Pioneers on the ground were
junior Lucas Deraps (9 carries, 43 yards, TD),
senior Dan Lemieux (4 carries, 30 yards,
15-yard rushing TD) and senior captain Matt
Tracy (8 carries, 21 yards, 1-yard rushingTD).
Tracy completed 12-of-21 passes for
107 yards. His favorite target was senior
captain Luke DiSilvio, who hauled in seven
receptions for 73 yards. Lemieux caught
two balls for 22 yards. Deraps (7 yards).
Sophomore Spencer Brown (5 yards) and
Tracy (4 yards) caught one pass each.
Sophomore Jack Tranfaglia recovered a
fumble. Lemieux and senior Tobin Ventolieri
each connected on extra-point attempts.
Junior Chase Buoniconti had five solo
and four assisted tackles, while junior Joe
Rosa had five solo tackles and one assisted.

Xander Janicki had five tackles. Junior Joel
Attubato and DiSilvio had four solo tackles

Pioneer Stadium against CAL foe
Newburyport as the Clippers put on a
show en enroute to a 29-19 win, spoiling
the Pioneers’ Senior Night.
Junior linebacker Joe Rosa had a
memorable night with a 30-yard picksix
and a fumble recovery. Junior Chase
Buoniconti delivered a solid offensive
effort with six carries for 37 yards and
rushing touchdowns of 2 and 5 yards.
Senior captain Matt Tracy was 12-for-20
for 137 yards with two interceptions. His
favorite receiver was fellow senior captain
Luke DiSilvio, who caught seven passes for
68 yards. DiSilvio also ran for 30 yards on
four carries.
“We originally thought Joe would be a
receiver or a tight end and the next thing
he’s O- and D- line,” Lamusta said. “He’s
been solid for us all year and has made
a couple of really cool plays and that
(interception) was one of them.”
Junior Joel Attubato (3 receptions, 26
yards), senior Will Mandile (1 reception,
29 yards) and junior Xander Janicki (1
reception, 14 yards) also caught Tracy
passes. Janicki also rushed for a teamhigh
33 yards on seven carries, while
Tracy picked up 15 rushing yards on eight
carries.
Freshman Mason Fusco converted the
first downs and a 137 yard advantage in
passing yards. But the Clippers owned the

Despite a 31-yard rushing
touchdown from junior Lucas Deraps
(44 yards on 4 carries), a 65-yard
rushing touchdown from junior Chase
Buoniconti (65 yards on 5 carries),and a
96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
from senior captain Luke DiSilvio,
Lynnfield met its match 41-19 against
the visiting Hornets at Pioneer Stadium
Oct. 24.
“Manchester-Essex is quite good
this year, but we did have a few
good defensive stops, which was
encouraging,” Lynnfield coach Pat
Lamusta said. “It was hard to corral
their quarterback, so we needed to
keep pace scoring wise. We definitely
saw some bright spots with our run
game and the offensive line with quality
inside runs. Lucas’ run up the gut early
gave us some momentum, but we
needed to keep up the offensive pace
and couldn’t.”
Sophomore quarterback Spencer
Brown completed 6-of-12 passes for
67 yards with one interception. Senior
captain Matt Tracy completed 1-of-7
passes for 17 yards.
Simply put, the Hornets dominated
in this one, outgaining the Pioneers
477-223 in total yards.
Manchester-Essex (6-1) jumped out
to a quick 12-0 lead and took care of
business from there despite committing
10 penalties for 115 yards compared to
the Pioneers, which committed only
three for a total of 10 yards. The Hornets
extended the lead to 20-6 at the half.
Brown (24 yards on 5 carries) and
Tracy (17 yards on 2 carries) also
contributed to the ground attack.
DiSilvio led all receivers with 38
yards on two receptions. He also
returned four kickoffs for 176 yards, an
average of 44.0 yards per return. Junior
Joel Attubato caught two passes for 38
yards, Buonconti caught two passes
for 14 yards and sophomore Aaron
Attabuto caught one for seven yards.
Chase Buoniconti
Deraps had a massive defensive
game with nine tackles - six of them
solo - and three sacks. Joel Attubato
also had nine tackles. DiSilvio had a
team-high seven solo tackles, while
senior Keven Keyes also had seven
tackles.
Buoniconti and Aaron Attubato had
seven tackles and one interception
each. Junior Josh Bernabei had six
tackles.
Junior Joe Rosa had another solid
defensive game with three solo tackles
and two sacks. Junior Devon Neenan
and sophomore Marko Tare had
three solo tackles each. Senior Tobin
Ventollieri had two tackles.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 1-6.

HAMILTON — Two struggling high
school football teams collided in South
Hamilton in Cape Ann League action
Friday night. In the end, Lynnfield (2-6)
made it a happy Halloween with a 35-
14 victory against Hamilton-Wenham
(1-7).
Sophomore Spencer Brown got
his first varsity start and impressed,
completing 11-of-15 passes for 130
yards and two touchdowns.
“He did a great job especially
considering Hamilton-Wenham was
blitzing us, so he had to get the ball out
early,” Lynnfield coach Pat Lamusta
said. “I thought he did a great job hitting
our short and intermediate guys.”
Trailing 28-0, the Generals made
things interesting with two fourthquarter
touchdowns but they weren’t
enough to mount a comeback against
the Pioneers.
The Pioneers held a 136-73
advantage in rushing yards and 130-89
yards in passing yards, finishing with a
263-144 advantage in total net yards.
The first quarter ended, 7-0, in favor
of Lynnfield after a “highlight reel”
worthy 59-yard rushing touchdown
from junior Chase Buoniconti.
Buonoconti was a beast, finishing with
100 rushing yards on just five carries
and another rushing TD (35 yards) late
after the Generals had closed to 28-14.
“He broke four tackles on that
run,” Lamusta said. “We said that was
definitely a highlight video.”
From there, in the second and third
quarters, senior Dan Lemieux caught
7- and 56-yard touchdown passes from
sophomore Spencer Brown.
“That last one was pretty cool as it
looked like it was going for only a fiveyard
gain and then a guy missed a tackle
and he went all the way,” Lamusta said.
Buoniconti put a lid on things when
he raced for a 65-yard touchdown in
Jack Burns
the fourth quarter (35-14). Another
highlight of the game was when junior
Lucas Deraps (7 tackles, 1 reception
for 14 yards) recovered a fumble and
booked it 45 yards to the house.
Lemieux caught five balls for 85
yards with two touchdowns. Senior
captain Luke DiSilvio also had a solid
all-around game with 31 yards on four
catches and 35 rushing yards on four
carries.

Lamusta highlighted the defensive play of Tracy.

SAUGUS — The Pioneers picked
up their third win of the season
Friday night, defeating host Saugus
28-0 at Saugus Middle High School.
The Pioneers dominated the
Sachems in all phases of the game,
outgaining them 167- 42 in net
rushing yards and holding a 227-
105 edge in total net yards. The
Pioneers also held an 8-5 advantage
in first downs.
Spencer Brown completed
12-of-17 passes for 81 yards with
one touchdown. Brown’s favorite
target was senior Dan Lemieux,
who caught six passes for 61 yards
with one touchdown. Lemieux also
converted two of three points after
attempts.
Chase Buoniconti had a game
to remember, rushing for 171 yards
and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Luke Di Silvio rushed for one score
and caught three passes for 30
yards.
“What can say but that Chase
monster game,” Lynnfield coach
Pat Lamusta said. “That was a good
defensive team that had us in yellow
and red, but we came up with at
least two big fourth-down stops
tha,t had they not happened, could
have changed the trajectory as we
gave up some big chunk passes.”
Lynnfield also won the turnover
battle with Buoniconti recovering

GAME 10
Jack Tranfaglia, left, and Xander Janicki
The Lynnfield football team
had no answers for Wayland’s
rushing game during Friday’s
non-playoff showdown at
Pioneer Stadium.
While the Pioneers (3-7)
owned the passing game
with a 193-130 advantage,
the Warriors outgained the
Pioneers 250-25 on the ground
and held a huge 17-5 edge in
first downs en route to a 38-21
win.
“We had some key stops
on defense in the first half
that kept us within striking
distance,” said Lynnfield coach
Pat Lamusta. “Ultimately, their
run game helped them pull
away in the second half.”
Sophomore quarterback
Spencer Brown completed
16-of-23 passes for 193 yards
with two touchdowns, three
interceptions, and a two-point
conversion.
Senior captain Luke DiSilvio
and senior Dan Lemieux had
monster receiving games with
DiSilvio picking up 95 yards on
seven catches along with one
touchdown and one two-point
conversion. Lemieux was close
behind with seven catches for
90 yards and a touchdown.
Lemieux also converted a point
after.
DiSilvio and sophomore
Mikey Hubbard were in the
right place at the right time
with a fumble recovery on
a botched Wayland punt.
DiSilvio was in the process
of downing the ball when a
Wayland player picked up the
ball. DiSilvio knocked the ball
loose and Hubbard picked it up
and returned it to the house.
“I was just there waiting to
touch it, then their guy tried to
grab it,” DiSilvio said.
“That was a huge fumble
recovery on punt coverage that
gave us some life,” Lamusta
said. “He is the snapper, so to
make that run and get involved
in that play was excellent
hustle from a young guy. Luke
was also heads up to be able to
jar the ball loose from the punt
returner and Hubbard was
right there to scoop it up.”
Sophomore Aaron Attubato
hauled in one reception for
seven yards.
DiSilvio led the Pioneers’
rushing attack with 17 yards
on five carries, while senior
Spencer Liu picked up 11 yards
on three carries.
Despite the loss, Lamusta
was happy with the Pioneers’
effort.
“Brown, DiSilvio and
Lemieux helped offensively
with some explosive plays,
but ultimately, we had trouble
moving the chains and getting
the run game going down the
stretch. They played hard right
to the end against a solid Dual
County team.”

THANKSGIVING PREVIEW
It’s been an up-and-down season
for the Lynnfield football team. Riddled
by a rash of injuries and lacking
experience, the Pioneers have won just
three games.
Nonetheless, the team is hoping to
finish the year on a high note with a
win against traditional archrival North
Reading on Thanksgiving Day. The
game is slated for 10 a.m. at Pioneer
Stadium.
To do so, however, will be an uphill
climb. The 9-1 Hornets advanced to
the semifinals of the Division 5 state
tournament.
“North Reading will be a challenge
this year for sure,” said Lynnfield’ coach
Pat Lamusta. “They are well-equipped
in all phases of the game. We want to
get some consistent rhythm on offense
in the game so we keep their offense off
the field.”
Truth be told, this may be Lamusta’s
most challenging season since taking
over as head coach in 2018 after the
departure of Neal Weidman. With a
revolving door of injuries, Lamusta has
had to scramble week after week to find
the right personnel he hoped would
click. Turkey Day will likely be more of
the same.
The Pioneers hope to close
out the season with a win against
traditional archrival North Reading on
Thanksgiving Day, but it won’t be easy.
The Hornets are on a roll at 9-1. The
No. 5 seed in the Division 1 tournament,
North Reading squares off against topseeded
Shawsheen Valley Tech in the
semifinals Friday night.
“We’re eager to get a win for our
seniors,” Lamusta said. “They have put
a ton of time in for this program over
the years, loved the ups and downs,
and would like to get them one on
Thanksgiving Day.”
He said a key to the game will be
special teams.
“We are hoping to get a few guys
back from injury for the game, but a big
difference is special teams,” Lamusta
said. “North Reading does a good job,
typically, and they have a great returner
this year who we’ll need to contain. Dan
Lemieux will be a big part of this game
— kicking and returning.”
Another one: not giving up big plays.
“Defensively, we’re hoping we can
keep them in front of us and not give
up chunk plays,” Lamusta said. “We
will need to be sharp on pursuit and
tackling on the perimeter.”
The Pioneers have won Turkey Day
bragging rights for three consecutive
years.
“We’re eager to get a win for our
seniors,” Lamusta said. “They have put
a ton of time in for this program over
the years, loved the ups and downs,
and we would like to get them one on
Thanksgiving Day.”
Tri-captains Luke DiSilvio, Ben
Gazit, and Matt Tracy are part of a
senior group that has never lost a
Thanksgiving Day game. They know the
season hasn’t been what they’d hoped
for, but are confident they can go out as
winners.
“I’m really proud of the guys for
working so hard, considering we
had so many injuries and were really
inexperienced,” Tracy said. “I just want
to go into North Reading playing hard
like we always have and see what we
can do.”
Tracy was one of many players
asked to play a different position this
year, seeing significant minutes as a
defensive end.
“I played a little bit last year, so I
knew the position and went back to it
when we needed me to,” he said. “I had
a lot of fun doing it — to be honest.”
Tracy thinks the Pioneers are ready
to win.
“We’ve had so many growing pains
this year with a lot of kids having to
move around doing what we think is
best for us,” he said. “We’ve come a long
way. Every year, you come out kind of
slow, but we should be able to pick it up
by the end of the year, so I think we are
at a point where we can be successful.”
DiSilvio said he trusts the coaching
staff to come up with a successful
gameplan.
“North Reading is very good, but I
think I have a good idea that we can
come up with a good scheme during the
week. We just have to pick at what we
can at their defense,” he said. “This year,
injuries really killed us. We definitely
would have had a much better record
if we had the team we had started the
season with. I think we have a good
chance to win. We just need to get a
good, solid week of practice in and we
just need to know that we can. We have
the right attitude to do that.”
Unfortunately for Gazit, who was
the only returning member of the
offensive line, he’s done for the year
after undergoing shoulder surgery a
couple of weeks ago to remedy an injury
he suffered during the first game of the
season. He said he tried to play through
it, but it finally caught up with him.
“I can’t really move it right now,
but it’s not too bad,” Gazit said. “I tried
to pay through it, but it kept popping
out and I had to ice it every game, so
surgery was inevitable.”
He agreed with DiSilvio that the
Pioneers will need a great week of
practice if they are to win the game.
“As Luke said, we need to have a
good week of practice,” he said. “For us,
as seniors, it’s our last time to go out,
so we need everyone onboard. We are
going to need the juniors to play like
it’s their last game as well. We all need
to give it everything we have. It doesn’t
matter if the score is not what we want
it to be. Hopefully, we can come away
with a win.”
Gazit said he believes the Pioneers
will be back to their winning ways next
year.
“We definitely have a very young
offensive line, but the future is very
bright for them,” he said. “Having a year
of varsity experience really helps you
a lot and I believe that next year, they
can take that experience and turn it into
some wins.”
While he’s disappointed he can’t suit
up on Turkey Day, he’ll be the Pioneers’
biggest fan.
“I’ll be cheering everyone on —
that’s for sure,” Gazit said. “That’s my
role that day, so that’s what I’ll do.”

NORTH READING — It may have
gotten a little too close for comfort in
the late stages, but the Pioneers (9-2)
had just enough left in the tank to
survive a furious Hornets’ rally in the
fourth quarter to come away with a
Thanksgiving Day 43-36 rain-soaked
road win over archrival North Reading
(8-3) at Arthur Kenney Field.
After Spencer D’Augusta scampered
up the middle to make it 43-22,
Lynnfield appeared to be in the drivers’
seat, but the Hornets had other ideas.
Gavin Brady exploded on the ensuing
kickoff, weaving his way 88 yards into
the end zone to make it 43-29 with 4:42
left to play. North Reading recovered
an onside kick at the Lynnfield 47 and
advanced to the 36 on the next play.
Jared Bernabei seemed to restore order
with an interception, but a Pioneer
fumble gave the ball right back to North
Reading on the Lynnfield 35. One play
later, quarterback Jason Berry executed
a flea slicker to Antonio Ricca to make
it a one-score game, 43-36 with four
minutes to go.
Lynnfield’s Will Mandile was in the
right place at the right time, recovering
the onside kick, but it wasn’t until
Bernabei put the game in the books
with a minute to go after he picked up
five yards for a first down, allowing the
Pioneers to run out the clock.
While Lynnfield is known for its
passing game, head coach Pat Lamusta
flipped the script in this one - and it
worked.
Bernabei (176 yards on 20 carries)
was a backfield wrecking crew,
scoring four touchdowns. He tossed
in a defensive interception for good
measure. D’Augusta wasn’t too shabby
either; he ran for 112 yards on nine
carries. Simply put, the Hornets simply
could not stop the Pioneers’ running
game.
“Those two and our entire running
game was phenomenal today,” Lamusta
said. “They were driven and just stuck
to the game plan and the offensive line
was tremendous. I can’t say enough
Jared Bernabei
about the way the kids responded and
the effort they put in to win this game.”
Lamusta gave a shout out to the
seniors.
“The seniors drove the success of this
team,” Lamusta said. “On and off the
field. Captains like Walter Radulski and
Iain McCarthy who may not have been
in the stat column every week were key
leaders on the offensive line and the
defensive backfield, respectively. It’s
young men like Walter and Iain who
glue it all together and make this thing
go.”
It did not start well for Lynnfield.
North Reading took a 7-0 lead in the
first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown
pass from Jason Berry to Gavin Brady.
Tyler Adamo answered with a 7-yard
scramble to make it a 7-7 game with
4:19 left in the quarter after Massimo
LoGrasso (7-for-7 PATs) tacked on the

extra point. A Berry to Gavin 55-yard
bubble pass regained the lead for North
Reading at 14-7.
But the rest of the half belonged to
Lynnfield. Jesse Dorman got the party
with a pick in the endzone. Lynnfield
needed just a couple of minutes to
string together an 80-yard drive, capped
by Bernabei’s TD from five yards out,
the big plays being a 32-yard run by
Bernabei and 40 yard Adamo-to-
Dorman strike. D’Augusta tacked on the
2-point conversion to send Lynnfield
into halftime with a 22-14 lead.
The Pioneers picked up where they
left off in the third, driving 63 yards in
12 plays. A big play on the drive was
a 15-yard completion from Adamo to
Madux Iovinelli (3 receptions, 58 yards)
allowing Iovinelli to set a new mark for
career receiving yards (872). Bernabei
polished off the drive with a 5-yard run
to bump the lead to 29-14. Touchdowns
from Bernabei (31-yard run) and
D’Augusta (50-yard run) completed the
scoring for Lynnfield.
The win was the third straight Turkey
Day for Lynnfield, which now owns a
37-29 edge.
