GAME 1
Luke Maglione
In a 21-0 loss to Melrose,
Peabody (0-1) trailed by just
seven points at halftime, but
couldn’t find the promised
land in the season opener
Sept. 5 at Fred Green Field.
The Tanners struggled
offensively, mustering only
27 yards rushing and 65
yards passing, yet still, it was
anyone’s game at the half.
Head coach Mark
Bettencourt said junior
Marc Mendonca played well
on the defensive end.
Senior captain Luke
Maglione completed
11-of-16 passes for 65
yards with one interception.
Mendonca (38 yards)
and senior captain Cory
Dooley (22 yards) caught
two passes apiece, while
sophomore Drake Dixon (5
yards) also had a reception.
Senior Christ Jeune led
the ground attack with 20
yards on nine carries, while
Yadiel Villanueva rushed
for 12 yards on seven
carries. Seniors Andrew
Anthony-Santos (2 yards)
and Kris Adams (yard) also
contributed.

GAME 2
Looking to avenge the prior week’s
21-0 loss in Melrose, the Tanners (0-2)
again fell short in enemy territory — this
time at Knowlton Stadium on Sept. 12,
losing to the Winchester Sachems 42-7.
For a second straight week, the
Tanners struggled offensively with only
104 total yards, but the defense kept
the Tanners within striking distance
at the half, trailing 21-0. Peabody cut
the deficit to 21-7 in the third quarter
on a keeper by senior captain Luke
Maglione, but the Sachems put the
dagger in the Tanners’ hearts on their
next possession, returning the kickoff
82 yards to the house, then adding two
more scores to close out the game and
send Peabody packing.
Maglione completed 14-of-21 passes
for 86 yards with one pick. Junior Mark
Mendonca caught three passes for 27
yards, while senior captain Cory Dooley
caught six passes for 24 yards. Senior
Max Silvia (11 yards) and sophomore
Drake Dixon (yard) had two receptions
each, while seniors Brian Collins (23
yards) and Anthonly Melo (5 yards) had
one catch each.
Jack Smith (carry, 12 yards),
Andrew Anthony Santos (2 carries, 9
yards), Dixon (4 carries, 7 yards) and
Yariel Villanueva (4 carries, 4 yards)
contributed to the Tanners’ ground
effort.

GAME 3
On Sept. 19, Peabody hosted
Swampscott in its first home game of
the season. Despite a big night from
quarterback Luke Maglione, who
completed 24-of-40 passes for a gamehigh
252 yards, the Big Blue left with a
28-6 victory behind a strong performance
from quarterback John von Barta and
wide receiver Chase Groothuis.
Barta threw for 197 yards and four
touchdowns to lead Swampscott. His
favorite target was Groothuis, who
caught two of those scores.
The Big Blue jumped out to a 14-0
lead during the first quarter. Barta
first connected with Jack Duffy on the
sideline. Duffy broke a tackle and raced
into the end zone for the game’s opening
score.
After forcing a three-and-out,
Swampscott took over on Peabody’s 48-
yard line. A 30-yard screen to Will Bush
and 14-yard rush by Barta pushed the
Big Blue deep into Tanners’ territory. On
the 5-yard line, Barta found Groothuis
on a slant route to make it 14-0 with 4:48
remaining in the first.
Peabody, after multiple three-andouts
to open the game, found some
rhythm through the air. Maglione
connected with senior Mark Mendonca
over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown.
The extra point was no good.
Maglione completed eight passes
to Mendonca, who finished with 94
receiving yards. Junior Brian Collins
Dixon (5 catches, 64 yards) and senior
captain Cory Dooley (6 catches, 49 yards)
also had big days. Seniors Joaquim
Chaves (24 yards) and Max Silvia (21)
caught two passes each.
Chaves (10 carries, 30 yards) and
senior Yadiel Villanueva (5 carries, 24
yards) led the ground attack.
Swampscott extended its lead just
before halftime. With 1:07 remaining,
Barta escaped a sack and found
Groothuis wide open for a 19-yard
touchdown, making it 21-6.
The Tanners had a chance to cut
into the deficit, but a 36-yard field goal
attempt went wide.
The Big Blue sealed the game in
the third quarter when Barta hit Noah
Bascon for a 51-yard touchdown. Bascon
showed off his speed and elusiveness
in the open field, making multiple
defenders miss.
Peabody dropped to 0-3 and is still
looking for its first multi-touchdown
game. Swampscott improved to 2-1,
winning its second straight after a
season-opening loss to St. Mary’s.
Before kickoff, Peabody honored
Freddy Espinal, a member of the Class
of 2026 who died in September of 2024.
Espinal’s family was recognized at
midfield and handled the coin toss.

GAME 4
There wasn’t a lot of defense in
this clash between visiting Lynn
English and Peabody. But if you love
big-play offenses, this one was for
you as the Bulldogs defeated the
Tanners 54-32 behind 40 secondhalf
points.
English quarterback Shane
Knowlton-Simard scored five
rushing touchdowns. Peabody’s
Mark Mendonca (5 catches, 85
yards) scored twice – one a pick-six.
After forcing a three-and-out,
Peabody started the game with
good field position at its own 41.
Jake Marcotullio capped the drive
with a 28-yard field goal to give
Peabody its first lead of the season.
The Tanners converted two thirddown
plays to keep the drive alive:
the first a 15-yard completion from
Luke Maglione (14-of-28, 190 yards,
3 TD, INT) to Brian Collins Dixon (4
catches, 33 yards), and second an
11-yard completion to Mendonca.
English came right back and
needed just 1:40 to take the lead on
a 7-yard quarterback keeper from
Knowlton-Simard and extra point
from Ghafour Diallo to make it 7-3.
Thanks to a 45-yard pick-six from
Mendonca, the Tanners regained their
lead, 10-7, with about eight minutes
remaining in the second quarter.
But on English’s ensuing drive,
Xavier Beauchamp capped a 14-
play drive with a 9-yard scamper to
make it 14-10 English.
Truth be told, the Tanners had no
answers for Beauchamp. Midway
through the fourth quarter, he had
wriggled his way to close to 200
yards rushing on 19 carries.
Maglione connected with
Mendonca from 33 yards out
to retake the lead for Peabody.
Marcotullio converted the extra
point to give the hosts a 17-14
halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs snatched their lead
Joaquim Chaves
right back on their first possession
of the third quarter, courtesy of
another quarterback keeper from
Knowlton-Simard – this one from 10
yards out.
Continuing the back-and-forth
theme, Peabody regained its lead
in just five plays, answering on
a bizarre 37-yard Maglione-to-
Cory Dooley (3 catches, 50 yards)
connection after two English
players deflected the pass right into
Dooley’s waiting hands, making the
score 24-20 in favor of the Tanners.
Beauchamp took charge on the
Bulldogs’ next drive, picking up
all 60 yards of the drive on three
carries, the final a 15-yard burst
off the left tackle to make it 26-24
English.
English stretched its lead
to 32-24 after a 43-yard bomb
from Knowlton-Simard to Jason
McDonald.
Peabody’s Max Silvia (2 catches,
50 yards) then caught a 32-yard
pass from Maglione, and a reverse
to Joaquim Chaves (14 carries, 68
yards) on the 2-point try tied the
game, 32-32.
After that, it was all English.
Actually, it was all Knowlton-
Simard, who put on a real show the
rest of the way.
An 8-yard keeper and 2-point
conversion from Simard gave
English the lead for good with
about six minutes to go. After an
interception by English’s Kassius
Chea, Knowlton-Simard exploded
from 42 yards out to stretch the
Bulldogs’ lead to 46-32. Then, to add
insult to injury, he added another
rushing touchdown and 2-point
conversion to seal the game, 54-32,
with about four minutes to play.
Christ Jeune (3 carries, 25 yards)
also contributed to the cause.
Sophomore Ty Lomasney completed
2-of-2 passes for 26 yards.
May the blessings of this Thanksgiving fill your
heart and home with happiness!

GAME 5
Despite a touchdown
reception from Peabody
junior Mark Mendonca
(from senior captain Luke
Maglione), the Tanners’
struggles continued with
a loss in enemy territory.
Masconomet defended home
field advantage with a 41-6
win on Oct. 3. Peabody had
no answer for Masconomet’s
high-powered offense,
which threw one big play
after another at the Tanners,
including three scores of 49
yards or more. The Chieftains
built a 14-0 lead after the first
quarter and put the game
away with a 20-point second
quarter to lead 34-0 at the
half.
Trailing 41-0 in the final
quarter, Maglione (16-of-22,
134 yards, TD, 2 INTs) hit
Mendonca (3 catches, 34
yards) from 21 yards out to
finally get the Tanners on the
board, but it was too little,
too late as the Tanners fell to
0-5 on the season.
Senior captain Cory
Dooley led the Tanners’
receivers with five catches for
29 yards, while junior Brian
Collins Dixon contributed
one catch for nine yards.
The Chieftains outrushed
the Tanners by a whopping
174-49 yards. Senior Christ
Jeune was the Tanners’
leading rusher with 23 yards
on seven carries, while senior
Joaquim Chaves picked up
13 yards on five carries. James Hooper

GAME 6
Luke Maglione
Records were out the window between the
Marblehead and Peabody football teams in this one.
The Tanners (0-6) gave the Magicians (6-0) a good
fight at Coley Lee Field, but Marblehead turned it
up late en route to a 35-14 victory on Oct. 17.
The Tanners got off to a solid start. After a
scoreless first quarter, senior captain Cory Dooley
staked Peabody to a 6-0 lead in the second quarter,
hauling in a 3-yard pass from senior captain Luke
Maglione (blocked kick).
Marblehead’s Finn Gallup had a monster game,
throwing for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He
connected for 30 yards with Finn Gallup to put the
Magicians on top 7-6 after a successful kick. Gallup
extended the lead to 14-6 with a 5-yard quarterback
keeper.
Peabody answered right back, electrifying the
home fans with a 91-yard kickoff return by junior
Mark Mendonca. After senior Joaquim Chaves
converted the 2-point attempt, the Tanners were
back in business, tied at 14-all.
Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there
for the Tanners as the Magicians responded with 19
unanswered points on a pair of rushing touchdowns
from Breydan Callahan and a 13-yard Gallup to
Trent Brown touchdown pass to close out the game.
Maglione completed 12-of-21 passes for 77
yards with one touchdown and an interception.
Jack Smith (4 catches, 34 yards), Dooley (5 catches,
25 yards), Chaves (catch 4 yards) and junior Brian
Collins Dixon (catch, 2 yards) contributed to the
Tanners’ aerial attack. The Tanners’ ground game
struggled, mustering only 20 net yards rushing.
Chaves led the team with 22 yards on 10 carries.

GAME 7
For a second consecutive
week, the Tanners had the lead
but couldn’t hold it, losing to host
Danvers 32-15 at Dr. Deering
Stadium on Oct. 24 to fall to 0-7.
The game was a contrast
in styles with the pass-heavy
Tanners and the run-heavy
Falcons. Defense ruled in the
first half with neither team
finding the end zone. But both
teams came out of the halftime
break energized and put on an
“anything you can do, I can do
better “show in the third quarter.
Peabody struck first. Senior
Joaquim Chaves (13 carries, 64
yards) punched it home from
5 yards out. After junior Jake
Marcotulio split the uprights on
the extra point, the Tanners were
on top 7-0.
Danvers answered right away
with touchdowns from Jack
Houston (45-yard pass from Nate
Wise) and Zach Fultz (11-yard
scamper) to stake the Falcons to
a 12-7 lead.
But Peabody refused to go
away. Junior receiver Mark
Mendonca (5 catches, 50 yards)
hauled in a 18-yard touchdown
reception from senior
quarterback Luke Maglione to
put Peabody back on top 13-7.
Peabody junior Brian Collins
Dixon converted the 2-point
attempt to stretch the lead to 15-7
at the end of the third quarter.
Unfortunately for the Tanners,
everything went stone cold in
the fourth quarter. The Peabody
defense had no answers for
Fultz (24 carries, 157 yards), Jack
Houston (13 carries, 78 yards)
and Kaio Baghorst (5 carries, 50
yards) the rest of the way, who
helped the Falcons rack up 21
unanswered points to seal the
win. By the time the dust settled
in this one, the Falcons’s rushing
attack finished with 281 yards (to
Peabody’s 63), leaving Peabody
on the outside looking in for
another week.
Wise attempted only three
passes in the contest, but he
completed two of them for 67
yards and one TD. Maglione
had an efficient day, completing
21-of-33 passes for 159 with one
touchdown and a pick. Dooley (4
catches, 52 yards), Mendonca (5
catches, 50 yards) and Dixon (7
catches, 37 yards) were favorite
targets. Chavez (3 catches) and
junior Jack Smith (2) finished
with 10 receiving yards each.

GAME 8
Too many turnovers that proved costly and
a struggling offense were the kisses of death
for the Tanners’ football team (0-8), which
lost to visiting Beverly 22-0 on a windswept
and rainy Halloween night at Coley Lee Field.
The game was also Peabody’s Senior Night.
Beverly had three interceptions, two of
which resulted in touchdowns.
Beverly’s Sean Costa (15 carries, 87 yards)
staked the Panthers to a 7-0 lead with a 5-yard
rush in the first quarter (Luca Guevara kick).
Costa bumped the lead to 14-0 at the half
with another 5-yard scamper in the second.
Safety Elvis Heredia sacked Peabody senior
quarterback Luke Maglione in the end zone
for a safety to add two more and make it a
16-0 game going into the final quarter. Costa
added a third score, this one a 6-yarder to
complete the scoring.
Maglione completed 9-of-17 passes for 79
yards. Senior captain Cory Dooley led Tanner
receivers with four receptions for 27 yards,
while junior Brian Collins Dixon had two
catches for 23 yards. Junior Mark Mendonca
(16 yards), junior Gabriel Casiano (7 yards),
and junior Jack Smith (6 yards) had one catch
each.
The Tanners also struggled with their
ground game, picking up just 26 net yards
rushing to Beverly’s 236. Senior Yadiel
Villanueva picked up 16 yards on five carries,
while senior Christ Jeune (4 carries) and
senior Joaquim Chaves (10 carries) rushed for
11 yards each. Nathan Ambrozavitch

GAME 9
For 20 minutes, the Nov. 6 non-playoff game
between the visiting Tanners and Essex Tech
was up for grabs. With Peabody on top 7-6 and
about two minutes to go in the half, Essex Tech
regained the lead 12-7 on a 24-yard rush by
Charlie Lussier. It went from bad to worse in a
hurry for the Tanners, who fumbled away the
kickoff. As good teams do, Tech capitalized with
another Lussier score to send the teams into
the halftime break with Peabody trailing 18-7.
Tech’s momentum continued in the third
quarter, scoring 22 points to put the game in the
bank. The final score was 40-14 as the Tanners
fell to 0-9.
Peabody outscored Tech 6-0 in the final
quarter, courtesy of sophomore Ty Lomasney
(2 catches, 40 yards), who hauled in a 28-yard
strike from senior captain Luke Maglione
(15-of-26, 188 yards, 2 TDs) for the first
touchdown of his career.
Junior Mark Mendonca led the Tanners’
receivers with 64 yards on five catches. Senior
Joaquim Chaves, who caught a 39-yard pass
from Maglione to give Peabody an early 7-0
lead after junior Jake Marcotullio’s PAT, caught
four passes for 57 yards. Junior Jack Smith (13
yards), senior Kris Adams (8 yards), senior
captain Cory Dooley (3 yards) and Yadiel
Villanueva (3 yards) had one reception each.
Villanueva led the Tanners’ ground attack
with 47 yards on nine carries, while senior
Christ Jeune was right behind with 30 yards on
seven carries. Chaves chipped in 14 yards on
five carries.

GAME 10
In a back-and-forth non-playoff
battle at Leary Field that went right
down to the wire, the Peabody
Tanners (1-9) made the big plays en
route to a 19-14 win.
Trailing 14-13 with 40 seconds
to play, senior captain Cory Dooley
caught a 6-yard touchdown from
fellow senior captain Luke Maglione
to put the Tanners on top 19-14.
After that, the Tanners’ defense
came up clutch. Waltham had two
shots at the end zone to steal the
game, only to be denied by the
Tanners’ secondary, which forced
an incomplete pass from Hawks’
senior quarterback Ryan Dragone.
Junior defensive back Jack Smith
intercepted a Dragone pass to seal
the win.
Bettencourt is hoping the
Tanners’ win will carry over to the
Thanksgiving Day game at home
against Saugus (2-8). Like the
Tanners, the Sachems will come
into the game on the heels of a win,
having beaten East Boston 34-0 in
their last game.
“We’re hoping this win will
give us some confidence and
momentum and allow our seniors
to walk off our home field as
winners on Thanksgiving morning,”
Bettencourt said.
Waltham struck first, taking a 7-0
lead in the first quarter on a 64-yard
rushing touchdown from freshman
JJ Wilder and successful PAT.
Peabody pulled to within one
at 7-6 in the second quarter on a
1-yard run from senior running
back Yadiel Villanueva.
In the third, the Tanners
took their first lead on a 2-yard
quarterback keeper from Maglione.
Junior Jake Marcotullio tacked on
the extra point to put the Tanners
on top 12-7.
Waltham regained the lead in
the fourth quarter on a 21-yard
touchdown reception from Bobby
Mendenzo, who looked to be
wrapped up at the Peabody 15-yard
line only to power through a gang of
Tanner tacklers into the end zone to
give the Hawks a 14-13 lead.
Waltham had two shots at the
endzone in the waning seconds, the
first an incomplete pass, then Smith
sealed the deal with an interception.
Senior captain Cory Dooley, in
his first start at running back, led
the Tanners’ ground attack with 51
yards on 12 carries. Fellow senior
Yadiel Villanueva picked up 40
yards on 16 carries.
Maglione completed 16-of-
23 passes for 146 yards with one
touchdown and one interception.
He also ran for 13 yards on five
carries.
Junior Mark Mendonca caught
three Maglione passes for 51
yards, while Smith (4 catches, 31
yards), junior Brian Collins Dixon
(5 catches, 29 yards), Dooley (3
catches, 29 yards) and freshman
Ryan Maguire (catch, 9 yards)
contributed to the Tanners’ aerial
attack.
Bettencourt said Dooley and
Villanueva shined in the backfield.
“Senior captain Cory Dooley
stepped up to play running back for
the first time in his career and did a
great job with fellow senior Yadiel
Villanueva running the ball.”
Bettencourt highlighted the play
of a couple of younger defensive
players.
“Defensively, sophomore Nick
Barbosa and freshman Zaiden
Nazaire filled in at linebacker and
boosted the defense.”
In a season of struggles,
Bettencourt also praised the yearlong
contributions and leadership
of junior captain and two-way
lineman Matt Dresser, the only
returning starter on the offensive
line.
“Matt has been invaluable
Jack Smith
with working with our young and
inexperienced offensive line,”
Bettencourt said. “Coming into this
season, one of our biggest voids
with the loss of Jimmy Festa, Dylan
Annesse, Jackson O’Brien and
Jayden Cautillo was our offensive
line. Most of our backup lineman
from last year were seniors, so
most of this year’s linemen needed
leadership and guidance. Matt has
done a great job being that person
and I think that we will see a lot of
that influence show itself in the next
couple of seasons.”
Faithfully serving our community, practicing a tradition
of TRUST, CARING and PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.
Congratulations!

great

THANKSGIVING 2024
Thanksgiving football games love
to pin rivals together, and Thursday
morning’s matchup at Christie Serino
Jr. Memorial Athletic Complex was no
different. Peabody walked away with
a 33-7 win over Saugus to make its
Thanksgiving dinner just a bit sweeter.
The Tanners found the scoreboard
first, thanks to a Luke Maglione shovel
pass to Anthony Silva, who ran one in
from 2 yards out. Peabody struck again
with 9:32 remaining in the first half
when Maglione found Jayce Jean-Pierre
on a screen pass. Jean-Pierre took it to
the house for a 7-yard score to make it
13-0 after the PAT.
Saugus wouldn’t go down without a
fight, however, as freshman quarterback
Eli Fialho found junior receiver Ryan
Shea around midfield for a 28-yard
completion to spark some life into the
Sachems.
“He’s one of those guys where I tell
the quarterback, ‘He’s never covered,’”
said Saugus coach Steve Cummings.
“Even if he has players around him,
we’re confident he’ll go up and make
the play. It’s unfair sometimes, because
we expect him to always make the play,
but he’s an incredible athlete. He didn’t
get much time last year because we had
other guys in his position, but we’re
looking forward to what he can bring
his senior year.”
A few plays later, Saugus had the ball
on Peabody’s 9-yard line and called a
run to the right for Shea. When Shea got
the ball, he quickly paused and reversed
field. From there, he picked up a crucial
block from Jordan Rodriguez and
scored on a 9-yard burst.
The Sachems – now with momentum
– forced a turnover on downs and
got the ball back at midfield with
2:29 remaining in the half. But the
momentum was short-lived, with
Peabody’s Tyler Rappold picking off
Fialho and taking it to the house for a
60-yard touchdown.
“He’s been dinged up this season. He
hurt his thumb, he was wearing a cast,
and for a cornerback and wide receiver,
that’s pretty hard to do,” said Peabody
coach Mark Bettencourt. “He had a
great game today.”
Cummings, in all honesty, thought
that sequence was critical.
“In the second quarter, we got the
ball back with a one-score game and we
just floated the ball. Their guy makes
a great play and makes the pick and
is able to take it all the way back,” he
said. “That kind of changed the game.
In weather conditions like today, it was
tough.”
Peabody’s defense wasn’t done there
as the Tanners got another pick-six. This
one came from Jean-Pierre, who took it
67 yards to make it 33-7.
Bettencourt, who has more than 20
seniors on his team, said he’s going to
miss them. Some of them have been in
the program since they were ball boys at
6 years old.
“It’s very emotional, when you have
kids like Jimmy (Festa) who you’ve
known since they were 6 or 7 years old,”
Bettencourt said. “He’s been at our
practices for 10 or 12 years.”
Saugus graduates star running back
Cody Munafo, who has the utmost
respect from his head coach.
“Pound for pound, I don’t think
you’re going to find anyone tougher,”
Cummings said. “He gives it everything
he has. You’d like for them to go out on
a better note, but these seniors laid it all
out there today.”
