GAME 1
Two programs with rich histories
of success — and former conference
foes — kicked off the season under the
lights at Manning Field.
Marblehead flipped its own script.
After dropping its season-opener the
past two years, the Magicians struck
early and controlled the game en route
to a 21-6 win against Lynn English.
Senior quarterback Finn Gallup
shook off a slow start to lead the way.
After going just 2-of-5 for 9 yards
and taking a 25-yard sack in the first
quarter, he settled in and picked apart
the Bulldogs’ defense. Gallup finished
8-of-13 for 165 yards and three
touchdowns.
Gallup’s first score came on a
fourth-and-7 play midway through
the second quarter, when he
connected with Breydan Callahan
for a 37-yard score. The extra point
missed, but Marblehead went into
halftime ahead, 6-0.
In the third quarter, Gallup found
Owen Coyne across the middle for
a 28-yard touchdown, then hit him
again early in the fourth. Coyne (3
receptions, 106 yards) broke free in
the open field and sprinted to the end
zone for a 21-0 cushion.
The Magicians’ running game also
set the tone. Callahan broke free for
a 55-yard run on his first carry and
finished with 113 yards rushing.
English leaned heavily on
quarterback Shane Knowlton-Simard
and running back Xavier Beauchamp.
Knowlton-Simard rushed for 170
yards, while Beauchamp logged 94.
But the Bulldogs were stopped
short on key fourth-down attempts,
with Marblehead’s defense coming up
big each time.
Late in the fourth quarter, after the
Bulldogs forced Marblehead to punt,
fans held out hope for a comeback
with less than four minutes remaining.
That said, Marblehead’s Madden Lyons
intercepted a deep pass and returned
it to English territory.
Gallup kneeled out the clock to seal
the Magicians’ first win of the season.
From left, Jack Morin and Breydan Callahan line up on the defensive side
of the ball.
Happy Thanksgiving from your State Senator and State Representative!

a spirited and safe game. Have a wonderful holiday season!

GAME 2
Marblehead’s football team (2-0)
worked its magic again — this time, with
the Bishop Fenwick Crusaders in town at
Piper Field.
With a 26-20 final in the books, coach
Jim Rudloff and his Magicians took down
Fenwick for the first time in two years.
James Machado, Breydan Callahan,
and Rylan Golden (from quarterback
Finn Gallup) scored touchdowns for the
Magicians, while kicker Finbar Bresnahan
converted two field-goal attempts.
Better yet, Marblehead faced adversity
in this one. Fenwick led, 13-10, at halftime
and cut the lead to 26-20 late.
Callahan rushed for 75 yards, while
Gallup added another 60 on the ground.
Gallup threw for more than 200 yards as
well, capping off a terrific night under
center.
Golden (137 yards) and Owen Coyne
(69) led Marblehead’s receiving attack. The Marblehead Magicians celebrate after a big play against Bishop Fenwick.
GAME 3
Marblehead linemen await a snap.
Shepherd Hill scored first in this one, but against good teams, that’s not the
end of the world. The Marblehead Magicians (3-0) stayed perfect and had the
last laugh 35-22 in enemy territory.
Finn Gallup found Rylan Golden for a 15-yard touchdown just before
halftime for a 7-6 lead. And from there, coach Jim Rudloff’s visitors turned up
the pressure with 28 second-half points.
Gallup and Breydan Callahan (2 TDs) reached the promised land before
Golden secured the win with another touchdown — this one in the final two
minutes.
It’s been quite the season for the Red and Black, who have scored more than
20 points in each of their three outings against Lynn English, Bishop Fenwick,
and now Shepherd Hill. In total, Marblehead has outscored opponents 82-48.

GAME 4
GAME 5
Marblehead stayed perfect (5-0) with a
dominant performance in Beverly (4-2). Breydan
Callahan scored three consecutive rushing
touchdowns to lead the Magicians.
Despite Beverly’s Danny Pierce getting
things started with a 1-yard rushing touchdown,
Marblehead didn’t panic. Rylan Golden caught a
9-yard touchdown pass from Finn Gallup to put
the visitors on the board.
Marblehead’s Tim Wales (12-yard pass from
Gallup) scored the game’s final touchdown. Gallup
put on a show with nearly 250 yards passing.
GAME 6
Breydan Callahan runs the ball downfield.
This one was never in
doubt.
Marblehead High’s varsity
football team defended
Piper Field in style, cruising
to a 48-0 win against North
Andover. The team entered
its bye week with a perfect
record of 4-0.
The Scarlet Knights had
no answer for Marblehead’s
versatile, high-powered
offense. Despite holding the
Magicians scoreless for one
quarter, Marblehead struck
first when Finn Gallup rushed
16 yards to the promised land
in the second (7-0).
Tim Wales (from Gallup)
upped the advantage when
he raced 50-plus yards to the
end zone. Midway through
the second quarter, it was
14-0 in favor of the hosts.
Rylan Golden hauled in a
pass from Gallup toward the
tail-end of the first half —
one that ended with a 21-0
Marblehead lead behind
some extra-point kicks from
Finbar Bresnahan.
Owen Coyne, Vidal
Clark, Breydan Callahan,
and Armany Villar joined
the scoring barrage in the
second half.
Just like that, the Red and
Black had defended home
turf from another visitor.
Marblehead moves
forward with wins against
Lynn English, Bishop
Fenwick, Shepherd Hill, and
now North Andover under
its belt.
Finn Gallup takes Peabody’s Cory Dooley with him for a few yards.
Records were out the window between the
Marblehead and Peabody football teams. The
Tanners (0-6) gave the Magicians (6-0) a good
fight at Coley Lee Field, but Marblehead turned
it up late en route to a 35-14 Northeastern
Conference victory.
Marblehead’s Finn Gallup (265 yards
passing, 65 yards rushing) collected three total
touchdowns, Brayden Callahan (169 yards
rushing) rushed twice for scores, receiver
Madden Lyons (7 catches, 112 yards) made a
big difference in the passing game, and both
Tim Wales and Trent Brown caught touchdown
passes.
As for Peabody — which had the game
tied, 14-14, in the second half — Cory Dooley
and Mark Mendonca scored touchdowns.
Quarterback Luke Maglione completed 12
passes for 77 yards with a touchdown and an
interception, while receiver Jack Smith hauled in
four balls for 34 yards.
This season, coach Jim Rudloff and his
Magicians have outscored opponents, 200-76.
They’ve collected wins against Lynn English,
Bishop Fenwick, Shepherd Hill, North Andover,
Beverly, and now Peabody.

6-1 record a pleasant
surprise for Rudloff
After a few seasons of slow starts,
Marblehead’s varsity football team flipped
the script this fall. The Magicians, under
longtime coach Jim Rudloff, began the
season with six wins before suffering their
first loss against Masconomet (Game 7).
“This year, however, to be honest, we’re
just as surprised as anybody else. Of all the
past three years put together, this is the
year that we should have started off slow
on paper,” Rudloff said. “The last two years,
I’ve scheduled King Philip for a Week 2
matchup and that game is kind of one of
those games where you can almost cross it
off. Bishop Fenwick caught us twice when
we weren’t ready. We lost Miles O’Neil to
a private school and had two sophomore
quarterbacks who had never played in a
varsity game.”
The Magicians graduated 27 seniors
from last year’s team and returned only
a small handful of experienced players.
Some of this year’s seniors, Rudloff said,
had never played football before joining the
team.
“We thought the beginning of this year
was going to be rough, regardless of who we
played.”
Still, a strong returning presence at
quarterback made a difference. Senior
signal-caller Finn Gallup, who played half
of the snaps last season, has provided
leadership and stability on offense.
“Having someone who can explain
everything to the guys in the huddle or
in a meeting helps so much,” Rudloff
said. “A returning quarterback impacts
your running backs and receivers — he
can tell a running back if they’re lined
up wrong. That reduces the amount of
mistakes on the field.”
Gallup has led a balanced Marblehead
attack, while senior captain Breydan
Callahan has emerged as the team’s top
running back — despite not even playing
at the position last season.
Rudloff doesn’t see one dominant
strength defining this year’s group, but
instead credits its overall balance.
“This is one of the most balanced teams
I’ve had, at least up to this point in the
season,” he said. “We don’t really have
a defensive or offensive identity. I think
Finn’s ability to run and throw makes us
very versatile on offense. I don’t think
we’re great at anything; I just think we’ve
been pretty good at everything.”
GAME 8
Junior Finbar Bresnahan attempts a field goal at Piper Field.
Host Marblehead (6-2) fell short
against Danvers (6-2), 21-7, in a
late October meeting of Division 4
contenders. As of that week’s MIAA
power rankings, the Magicians
ranked fifth, while the Falcons
checked in at No. 12.
Marblehead’s Breydan Callahan
scored a rushing touchdown to tie
the game during the first quarter.
Danvers held a 14-7 lead after three
quarters before scoring again in the
fourth.

The Marblehead Magicians, over
the last few seasons, have been known
as a slow-starting group, but that was
anything but the case this fall.
The Magicians started the year with
six victories, including impressive wins
against Bishop Fenwick (26-20 final)
and Shepherd Hill (35-22). Last season,
Marblehead started 0-2 with losses
against Fenwick and King Philip before

Marblehead cruised in Division 4.
The following week, a Round of

Marblehead’s (7-3) season came to an
end in a 27-22 final.
Canton (8-2) advanced to the Final

history. Better yet for Bulldogs’ fans,
the home victory came in comeback
fashion.
The Magicians jumped on the hosts
right away. Armany Villar returned
the opening kickoff for a touchdown

Magic on display in Marblehead
Marblehead scored 48 points against
North Andover as well as 35 against
Peabody and Beverly — all while
playing solid defense, allowing two or
less scores five times this year.
Coach Jim Rudloff said Gallup has
helped the young team settle.
“Having someone who can explain
everything to the guys in the huddle or
in a meeting helps so much,” Rudloff
said. “A returning quarterback impacts
your running backs and receivers. He
can tell a running back if they’re lined

What helps Gallup is having toptier
receivers like Tim Wales and Rylan
Golden — to name a few. Against
North Andover, each caught receiving
touchdowns. Not only are they a pair of
safe hands for Gallup, but they’re hard
to bring down in the open field.
Pick your poison, as Marblehead can
also hurt you on the ground. Against
Beverly, Breydan Callahan scored three
rushing touchdowns. Entering the

Rudloff also spoke about the team
being balanced.

ability to run and throw makes us very
versatile on offense. I don’t think we’re

Marblehead looks to extend its streak to 13

14 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP MARBLEHEAD THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL 2025
LAST YEAR’S GAME
Bodie Smith swings the Silver Slugger Trophy as his team celebrates
at Fenway Park.
Around here, there are few rivalries
bigger than Marblehead vs. Swampscott.
When schedules get released — no matter
the sport — every Magician and Big Blue
athlete checks to see when they play the
other side.
And in 2024, they met at historic Fenway
Park in Boston.
Marblehead walked out of Fenway Park
victorious — and it didn’t need a walk-off to
do it. Whether it was through the air, on the
ground, or on defense, Marblehead seemed
to have every advantage in a 42-6 win.
Marblehead opened the game with a
65-yard scoring drive. The Magicians faced
a critical fourth-and-3 inside their own 50
and elected to go for it — a choice that paid
off. Fast forward a few plays, and Yandel
Garcia ran one in from 5 yards out to make
it 7-0. The drive took 8:47 off the clock.
Before you knew it, the score was 14-0
thanks to a Bernardo Bannis score.
Then, after another three-and-out from
Swampscott, Marblehead hit a home run
with Finn Gallup tossing one to Brady
Selvais for a 48-yard score.
“It’s something that I thought about
coming in,” Selvais said of his touchdown
celebration. “I’m only going to be in
Fenway Park once in my entire life playing
a football game, so might as well hit a funny
baseball side after scoring a touchdown.”
Swampscott, with two minutes
remaining in the half and down 21-0, got
the ball back thanks to a Jay Domelowicz
interception. However, the potential spark
that Swampscott needed was halted when
defensive tackle Gunther Fehrenbach
dropped into coverage and came up with
an interception of his own.
“That’s a coach’s dream,” Marblehead
coach Jim Rudloff said of the lineman’s
big play.
From there, Gallup found Crew Monaco
for a 48-yard touchdown to make it 28-0
with five seconds left.
Fortunately for the Big Blue, they only
needed five seconds to answer back. On
the ensuing kickoff, Gabe Tripp picked
the ball up from the 30 and bolted past
the coverage, sprinting into the end zone
to end the half, 28-6, after the PAT was
blocked.
The second half was more of the same,
with Marblehead winning the margins and
making the right plays at the right time.
