Pet ram Bo is like a child to
Kathrine Calder-Ritchie and
her husband.
So, when their knobbly
kneed 3-year-old was stolen
from a paddock in Little
River, they were absolutely
devastated.
But through a tip-off, a
$1000 reward for his return
and a bit of courage against
police advice, Bo is safe and
sound again, back where
he belongs with the couple
who live in Springston.
Bo was taken midafternoon
13 days ago
where Calder-Ritchie
had put their animals in
preparation for a shift
to the property later this
month.
Witnesses reported
seeing three men in a red
sedan, wrangling Bo.
Calder-Ritchie said it was
believed Bo was lifted over
a padlocked gate and put in
the car’s boot.
She had feared the worst
when he was stolen: He had
been taken for meat.

Inquiries are under way to

The vehicle was photographed
by a member of the public in
the disabled spot at Darfield
Pool last week.
The council became aware of
it when the photo was posted
on the Darfield community
Facebook page.
The council staff member
commented on the post:
“Apologies, just a quick in and
out checking the pool water
quality.”

Prolonged La Niña conditions
keeping firefighters on edge

Firefighters are bracing for
hot and windy weather which
is expected to continue until
mid-January.
While this week started with
damp conditions, the forecast
high for today is 29deg C.
On Friday evening, fire crews
spent several hours battling a
scrub fire near Curraghs Rd,
Rolleston.
Later, a large-scale response
was needed again when crews
were called to a vegetation fire
on Trents Rd, Prebbleton, at
about 1am, with the final crews
leaving at 7.30am.
Rolleston fire chief Marty
Tier said the dry conditions,
combined with high winds, can
blow embers from burn piles
even two weeks old.
“All it takes is a bit of wind
getting under it,” he said.
Tier said while Fire and Emergency
New Zealand can put
a fire ban in place, it is determined
by moisture levels rather
than weather conditions.
“If the moisture in the soil is
not right, we can’t (put a ban in
place) because the farmers will
complain,” he said.
In its latest seasonal climate
outlook, Earth Sciences New Zealand
predicts La Niña conditions
are likely to persist until January,

​Pot left on stove
Firefighters had to climb through
an open window of a Barton Fields,
Lincoln, home on Wednesday
afternoon to remove a pot left on the
stove. Lincoln deputy fire chief Tim
Quinlivan said a neighbour called
after hearing the smoke alarm.
“We went round, climbed through a
window, unlocked the door and took
the pot out,” Quinlivan said. He said
one of the crew went back later to
check on the householder.
Emergency road repairs
Part of Selwyn Rd was closed on
Monday for urgent road repairs
needed to address safety concerns
over work carried out by a third
party. The road was closed between
Springston Rolleston Rd and
Scout St. The council was unable
to respond before deadline to
questions about what the specific
concerns were or if there was a cost
to the council.
Ski shop on the move
Ski shop Gnomes is relocating to
Islington after more than 40 years
in Darfield. The shop, which opened
in 1983, has outgrown its current
space and will move to a larger
building on Waterloo Rd in April.
All full-time staff are expected to
remain with the shop.

Facebook community group on
Thursday afternoon.
About 5pm, she received a
reply to her post from someone
who said they had information
on Bo’s whereabouts.
That information led her to
a Burnham property which
she visited two hours later. The
property was protected by a
padlocked gate. She was nervous
about approaching
the gate to get the attention
of who lived there, so called
the police and explained the
situation.
“They (police) basically
said, don’t go there, and they
would find someone available
to look into it further,” she
said.
“But I went there anyway, I
was just desperate to find him.”
She waved at the security
cameras on the property, trying
to get the attention of its occupants,
but to no avail. A woman
in a car then arrived, so Calder-
Ritchie explained why she was
there.
The woman went inside to
inquire about Bo. She came
back out and said there was no
sheep.
Calder-Ritchie thanked her
Bo the ram is still recovering from his
ordeal after being stolen.

woman at the Burnham property,
who said her associate
would like to help her find Bo.
Calder-Ritchie assumed she
saw her post on the Rolleston
community page.
Calder-Ritchie then passed
on her phone number to the
woman. Soon after a man rang,
asking if the $1000 reward
was legitimate, which she
confirmed.
The woman then sent a photo
of who she believed to be Bo.
Calder-Ritchie verified it
was him and gave her their
address.
Two men turned up to her
home about 1am on Friday with
Bo, who was on a trailer.
“I was just so stoked to see
him,” Calder-Ritchie told Selwyn
Times.
“It’s amazing, I honestly
thought he would be dead or
beaten but the fact he’s still
alive is just next level crazy.
“It’s like out of a movie.”
She came out of the house
and thanked the men.
The men told her Bo was
found in Hoon Hay.
She gave them $800 for their
trouble and sent $200 to the
person who tipped her off.
While at the house, one of the
men asked her if would be possible
to eat a ram like Bo.
“I said, no, you wouldn’t eat a
ram, bro,” she said.
The couple has had Bo since
his birth three years ago.
She said Bo is still a little bit
shaken from the experience.

could be costly

disabled car park is $750.
Larsen said council records
show no other council-owned
vehicles receiving parking
infringements.
“However, as a council we
are clear with our staff that we
expect them to maintain the
highest standards, especially
when driving council vehicles.”
From November 1, 2024, to
October 31 this year, the council
issued 2806 infringement
notices amounting to $392,739.
Of those, 42 were for parking in
a disabled spot ($31,500).
Meanwhile, the council
may consider taking a more
pragmatic approach to parking
fines.
Said Mayor Lydia Gliddon
last month: “I do believe a more
pragmatic approach should
guide how parking tickets are
issued, particularly for things
like cars parked on verges.
“Parking is challenging in
some areas, especially where
roads are narrow or there’s
limited designated parking.
“I do see the need for a
parking bylaw, as it provides
clear guidance where it’s
genuinely required.
“But in many day-today
situations, if a bit of
commonsense and discretion
were to be applied, there might
not be major issues.”

Property boom pumps up council coffers

The council is on track to
collect millions more in rates
than planned this year due
to continued growth and
unexpectedly high property
revaluations.
It is also set to underdeliver
on its capital projects
programme.
The first finance and performance
committee meeting of
the term last week provided
budget progress from July until
to the end of
October.

general rates “due
to higher number
of ratable properties
now in the
region” and the

below budget due to the timing
of water meter charges, Hammond

from building consents of high
value building projects and government
levies, she said.

the budget was $4.7m, but is
now estimated to cost $3.7m.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon pointed
out there are “timing challenges,
not necessarily efficiencies” with
the year-to-date budgets. She was
looking forward to staff including
budget forecasting and the
departmental breakdowns in
future reports.
Chairing his first meeting,
councillor Aaron McGlinchey
signalled a change to the detail
in the reports coming to the
committee to a performancebased
reporting process.
“Rather than just showing
us tables of numbers and percentages,
we also want to see
what is the outcomes from the
spending.
“That’s going to be a shift
that we’ll be seeing in future
meetings.”

Lines company pays out $1000
after poplar hedge hacked back

When Lorraine Youngman
discovered her poplar hedge
had been aggressively cut back,
she was “heartbroken”.
The 86-year-old Ellesmere
Rd resident takes pride in her
garden, and at the entry to her
property, she maintains a row
of poplar trees as a hedge.
Lorraine had returned from
milking her cows at about 10am
two Fridays ago and noticed a
contractor’s vehicle at the end
of her driveway.
“I thought they were just
using it to turn around,” she
said.
But about two hours later,
as Lorraine was leaving for an
appointment, she discovered
a contractor from lines company
Orion had severely cut the
hedge back, with all branches
removed.
“I pulled alongside these five
men and said, ‘How dare you do
that to my trees?’ They said, ‘We
have instructions to do that,
and you would have got a piece
of paper saying that’s what we
were going to do’.”
Now Orion has apologised
and given Lorraine $1000,
which she will donate to Pet
Refuge, a charity which helps
remove animals from homes
affected by domestic violence so
they don’t hinder someone trying
to escape abuse.

“It is my absolute favourite
charity, and it has a lot of
meaning for me. I think that’s
quite a nice donation.”
Lorraine said Orion told her
they sent a letter in March,
but she could not remember
receiving it.
An Orion spokesperson told
Selwyn Times there had been
a “lapse” in the notification
process and the company was
working to rectify it.
“While the landowner was
notified ahead of the initial
visit, a second visit was
required to address a quality
issue.
“In this instance, the
subsequent visit was not communicated
as it should have
been,” the spokesperson.
Lorraine said in previous
years, Orion contractors had
only trimmed the tops, and
she would hire a maintenance
person to tidy the hedge.
“There hasn’t been an issue
for 34 years.”
She had “no idea” why the
trees were cut back so severely
this time.
The spokesperson explained
it was due to poplars being a
fast-growing species.
“The initial trimming was
considered insufficient,
allowing the fast-growing
tree species to encroach on
overhead lines before the next
routine cut cycle.
“We are currently reviewing
all of our processes, including
the length of cuts and
engagement with landowners,
to prevent similar incidents
happening in future,” the
spokesperson said.
​Development
contributions
back on track

Latest financial figures show
the amount developers are
paying for new infrastructure is
heading in the right direction.
Development contributions
(DCs) are paid by developers or
property owners to councils to
help cover the cost of additional
infrastructure.
Last year, the council was
effectively shortchanged by
$33.9m by developers exploiting
a loophole allowing them to pay
an old DC rate while a new rate
was being consulted on.
Council capital and projects
accountant Peter Edghill told
the finance and performance
committee that so far this
financial year, reserves and
roading, sewage and water DCs
are all tracking ahead of budget.
“This is just the general timing
catch-up, where last year we
were receiving much lower
DCs than expected, now we are
starting to receive these newer
DCs as we are getting a few large
subdivisions coming online.”
The only DC category behind
budget is community infrastructure,
which has brought in
$144,000 compared to a forecast
of $436,000.
Edghill said this was because
the community infrastructure
DC was only introduced last year
and was still experiencing a lag,
which he expected would be
made up over time.
Retiree refuses to ‘sit it out’
When her four-year-old
grandson asked her to play on the
floor, 71-year-old Annie hesitated
– not because she didn’t want to,
but because she knew getting back
up would be difficult.
“That moment broke something
in me,” Annie recalls. “I’d been
making excuses for months. ‘Nana
will watch from the couch.’ But
seeing his disappointed face when
I said no again – I realised I’d
become a spectator in my own
life. I was sitting everything out.”
The decline had been gradual.
First, skipping morning beach
walks. Then the unopened pilates
mat gathering dust.
“You don’t notice you’re
shrinking your world until
suddenly it’s tiny,” she says. “I
went from being the grandmother
who’d chase them around to the
one watching from the bench.”
Annie had always prided herself
on being active.
“I felt like I was disappearing,”
she admits.
“Accepting this might be my
new normal,” she says. “That’s a
horrible feeling at 71.”
The turning point came when
a friend mentioned Koru FX, a
natural New Zealand cream that
had helped her.
Annie picked up a bottle from
her local pharmacy that afternoon.
Reading the ingredients, she
recognised names she trusted –
arnica for soothing, mānuka oil
from New Zealand, peppermint
for cooling relief.
“These weren’t mystery
chemicals,” she says. “They were
things my mother would have
used.”
The cream absorbed quickly and
seemed to last a long time. Annie
soon noticed changes.
“I wasn’t planning my
movements as much.”
“Each week I noticed something
else. Reaching high cupboards.

That’s the question Selwyn Youth
Council is asking after signing a deal
with game maker Hasbro.
The Selwyn edition will be used
as a fundraiser for youth and
community initiatives across the
district.
A key part of the project is to involve
the community in shaping the board
and contributing ideas about what
makes Selwyn special.
Said youth council member Bella
Thompson: “This board is all about
celebrating Selwyn and giving our
community a chance to have their
say.
“We want everyone, from tamariki
to rangatahi and their wider whānau,
to share their ideas on what makes
our towns special. It’s a fun, creative
way to showcase our district while
fundraising to support future youth
projects.”
The youth council is looking for
people’s favourite hangout spots, best
places to eat, chill, and play, the iconic
spots everyone knows, and the hidden
gems only locals know about.
The idea has been gaining a great
reception, with almost 200 responses
submitted at Selwyn youth events
over the past two weekends.
Several places around New Zealand
already have a custom board,
including Christchurch, Wellington,
Southland, Wānaka, Queenstown and
Dunedin.
The youth council will be at events
over summer to collect ideas for the
Monopoly board.

After the sun sets,
Shands Rd glows
with festive flair

“It’s dead Christmas,” Carl Yates
says. Around him, a graveyard of
sleeping elves, reindeer and toy
soldiers lay still.
‘Twas eerily quiet at Shands
Rd, Prebbleton, when RNZ visited.
Not a creature was stirring,
not even a mouse.
Tangles of wires wound their
way between model carnival
rides, above them rows of thousands
of fairy lights hung dull
and lifeless.
Lusterless stars sat at the top
of the trees, wreaths hung from
closed doors, and the trains were
parked at the station waiting for
the festive spirit to kick in.
​But when the sun sets and the
switch turns on, the ‘graveyard’
will come alive, and transform
into the district’s very own
Christmas wonderland.
“Most people, when you put
up your Christmas lights, they’re
up for a month, and then everything
comes down and your
home returns to normal,” Yates
says.
“This place, it’s like this all
year round, but of course,
the lights are off… So, it looks
like dead Christmas, but it
comes back to life again in a
spectacular way.”
It’s an acre full of colourful
lights and extravagant animations,
with a twist of steampunk
creations and a touch of New
Zealand history, including old
displays from the Court Theatre,
and the original Goodnight Kiwi.
​Thousands of people flock

experience the synchronised
light and sound show.
For almost two decades, Yates
has been tinkering away in his
very own Christmas workshop,
building all sorts of festive backdrops
and animatronics.
Setting up the plethora of
decorations is no easy or cheap
task; the thousands of Christmas
lights cost around $60,000
a year.
“We literally work on this all
year. I’m always coming up with
new ideas,” Yates says.
His late wife, Maureen, was
the driving force of the show,
which all started off with her
collection of Christmas bears.
“I created one of the display
rooms for her because the house
was getting overloaded. We put
up a few Christmas lights, and
it got bigger and bigger,” Yates
says.
Maureen died from motor
neurone disease in 2020, but
Yates continues her legacy.

“It was never intended to be
a business. It was really just set
up for friends and family, and
it escalated from there. So, I
didn’t really think too much of
it. It was just them being their
crazy selves,” she says.
The colourful Christmas village,
a new expansion to the
show, was largely Yates’ new
wife Yvonne’s work.
Her favourite part of the
experience is the low sensory
night just for autistic children
and adults, when the music is
turned down.
“I am dying for this
Christmas to be over so
I can start on the ideas
that are already coming
together.”

​“A lot of the parents say it’s so
nice we can bring the children
out and they feel comfortable,”
she says.
But don’t expect to hear lots
of the usual Christmas carols
when the public visits. While the
village plays blues Christmas
music, the rest of the light show
flashes in sync with popular
rock music.
“We are out here every night.
Do you want to listen to Christmas
music every day like that? I sure
as heck don’t,” Yates says.
For Yates, it’s a labour of love.
He enjoys seeing children’s faces
light up when they arrive.
“We are going to keep doing
this as long as we can. Yes, I do
fall off the roof quite regularly,
but I’ve learnt to land on my
head, so no damage happens.”
Next year is the show’s 20th
anniversary.
“I am dying for this Christmas
to be over so I can start on the
ideas that are already coming
together,” Yates says.
“That’s going to be our big

Tertiary scholarships support success
A dozen talented Selwyn teenagers are being
supported to continue their education through
the Selwyn District Council Tertiary Scholarships.
This year, 12 scholarships were awarded to students
across Selwyn District Council to support them in higher
education.
The Selwyn District Council Tertiary Scholarships recognise
and encourage our district’s secondary school students
to strive for excellence - whether that’s in academic
achievement, sport, culture, the arts, social responsibility, or
other areas of community life.
These scholarships also celebrate students who have shown
real resilience and determination, overcoming barriers
to achieve their goals. Two scholarships were awarded to
students from each of Selwyn’s four high schools, along with
four district-wide scholarships.
Molly O’Reilly from Rolleston, pictured above with
Mayor Lydia Gliddon, was among the recipients, and will be
putting the scholarship towards her first year at the University
of Canterbury studying English, Philosophy and French.
Along with an excellent academic record, competing at
national athletics championships and being a volunteer,
Molly has also overcame a battle with anorexia. Receiving
the scholarship was a proud moment and also a huge
opportunity to allow her to pursue her dreams for study.
“I think it’s an incredible opportunity. Without it I wouldn’t
have been able to study the things I want to do. I wouldn’t
have had resources to do some of the courses. I didn’t know
if I was going to get a scholarship and I’m so grateful.

Rescue vehicles do the job in Ukraine

​After two whirlwind trips
to Ukraine, Matt Goodrick
received the call he had been
hoping for.
A soldier told him the Isuzu
Trooper vehicle Goodrick had
donated to the war-torn country
had been used to rescue seven
wounded soldiers from the
southern frontline the previous
day.
“It’s good to know the trip
was worth it and we’re actually
helping. You know, everyone
can do their bit to help even if
it’s minor in the big scheme of
things,” said Goodrick.
He received the call in mid-
October and believes the
vehicle is still being used to
evacuate soldiers from the
frontline.
The 57-year-old crowd-funded
about $15,000 for Ukraine,
which he used to purchase
the Isuzu and a Mitsubishi
Challenger for casualty
evacuations.
The vehicles were filled with
medical equipment.
In July, Goodrick travelled
across Europe with United
Kingdom-based aid group
Ukraine Mission, driving from
the UK to the Polish border and
then 1600km into Ukraine.
The people of Ukraine have
been fighting off the Russian
invasion for nearly four years,
and Goodrick said they are now
in survival mode.
“They’re doing everything
they can to protect their way of
life and their democracy.”
During the nine-day trip,
he travelled from western to
southern Ukraine to deliver the
Isuzu Trooper to Dnipro, before
heading to Zaporizhzhia to
deliver an ambulance.
Zaporizhzhia, a city of 710,000
about 40km from the frontline,
has been claimed by Russia as
its territory but remains under
Ukrainian control.
The Mitsubishi Challenger
purchased by Goodrick only
arrived in Ukraine recently
after a mechanical fault had to
be repaired.
He returned to Ukraine in
September on a shorter trip,
delivering a minibus and a
campervan to the western
city of Lviv on behalf of the
charity, Ukraine Mission, before
heading back to the UK to spend
time with his English father.
He returned to Christchurch
in late-October.
Goodrick said his strongest
impression was the contrast
between the relatively normal
rhythms of daily life and the
constant reminders of war.
He had been swimming in
the Dnieper River and later
sat down for a meal at a
Zaporizhzhia restaurant when
he heard the distant boom of a
missile strike.

“That’s just the bizarre nature
of life in Ukraine,” he said.
Across the country, Goodrick
saw large memorial sites
marked with plaques, photos
and Ukrainian flags, honouring
the soldiers and civilians who
have died during the conflict.
“In every town and city you
can see the toll of the war,” he
said.
“In Dnipro we stayed in a
pretty standard hotel but then
you’re told the windows have
been replaced three times
because they were blown out
from bombings at the nearby
train station.”
The vehicles Goodrick
helped deliver were packed
with practical medical
supplies needed to treat
injured soldiers and civilians,
including stretchers, walkers,
wheelchairs, crutches and
monitors.
Many conversations Goodrick
had with Ukrainians will
stay with him forever, from
a young surgeon in a Dnipro
hospital treating the wounded
to a female soldier on the
Polish border who offered an
emotional thank you in broken
English.
In Zaporizhzhia, he was humbled,
and slightly embarrassed,
to be thanked in a small recognition
ceremony by an aid
group working on the frontline.
“Compared to what these
people do every day, my
contribution was tiny. But
I guess it just reflects how
grateful Ukrainians are for any
foreign support.”
He said it felt good to contribute
even on a “micro-level”.
Goodrick’s wife and his wider
family are glad to have him
home.
“There’s valid concerns about
safety and that so they're all
pretty pleased I'm back now.”

CORDE’s momentum building after
Council-owned CORDE is a big
player in the contractor game
in Canterbury and beyond.

The name CORDE comes from the
idea of different strands of rope
coming together – a reflection
of how the company has united
various services across the
infrastructure sector.
While the CORDE brand is
only three years old, its founding
company, council-owned Sicon
Ltd, has been around for more
than 30 years.
The 2022 rebranding brought
Sicon, Blakely Construction and
Blakely Three Waters together
under the CORDE name.
CORDE board chair Murray
Harrington said the name
change has been “wonderfully
successful”.
“That has gone alongside the
commercial success, which is
probably unparalleled in New
Zealand at the moment, we
think, in terms of a horizontal
infrastructure business doing the
things we do,” Harrington told
councillors during a briefing on
the work the company does.
In the 2024/25 financial year,
CORDE recorded its highest
revenue of $148 million and
its biggest profit at $14.6m,
returning a $3m dividend to the
council. The company has $19m
in assets and no debt.

purchase electrical services.”
The council spent $102.9m with
CORDE in 2024/25.
Like the district, CORDE has
grown significantly, expanding its
workforce from 246 staff in 2019
to 412 today across 25 locations.
About 43% of its staff live in
Selwyn.
“It won’t always be that
successful because we are in a
commercial world, but what it
means is we’ve had to lift the
company in all sorts of ways in
terms of governance structures,”
Harrington said.

At the briefing, CORDE staff
outlined the company’s key
departments – including water
services, parks, construction and
roading.
Its water services and parks
teams operate in Selwyn and
Timaru, and this year picked up
the Mackenzie District contract.
Water and parks general manager
Vance Perrin said the work
spans everything from toilet
cleaning and spraying to cemetery
maintenance, drinking water
treatment and managing the
Pines Resource Recovery Park.
Across CORDE staff and subcontractors,
the company has
treated just over 9 billion litres
of drinking water, emptied
76,742 rubbish
bins, and mown
149,467,000sq m
of grass in the past
year.
In Selwyn alone,
CORDE operates
39 water treatment
plants and
seven wastewater
treatment plants
–which run 24/7
– and visits about

Perrin said the team has
invested in new technology,
including a robotic line marker,
and is exploring the use of autonomous
mowers.
“We are deep into a project
where we are doing some field
evaluation of a variety of different
use cases for autonomous

technology is now getting to a
point, with regards to safety and
accuracy, that it is getting viable
to deploy some of these into the
district,” he said.

to scale our operations in
the same way,” he said.
“In 2026, we will undertake
a strategy refresh and identify
key initiatives to move the
business forward, which will
strengthen alignment between
our people and the work they
undertake.”
The discovery of a natural spring has delayed work to extend Lincoln Domain.
Extension delayed
to protect spring​

The extension of Lincoln
Domain has been delayed
following the discovery of a
natural spring at the site.
The $11.3 million project,
which will extend the domain
and Meijer Dr through to
Boundary Rd, was originally
due to be completed in June
2027.
The project has now been
pushed back by 12-18 months,
with construction expected to
begin in November next year.
Council infrastructure and
property executive director
Tim Mason said the council had
identified a spring on the site as
the primary source of the Liffey
Stream.
“Given the spring’s importance,
we need to make sure our work
does not have an adverse effect
on the spring and the Liffey
Stream, and that we address any
flood risks.”
So far, the council has spent
$3.1m on design and remediation
of the site, included the removal
of trees and asbestos.
Mason said any additional work
was not expected to add extra
costs to the project.
Once completed, the project
will also add new sports grounds,
cycling and walking tracks, as
well as additional space for
parking at the domain.
Historically, the Liffey provided
water for Moffat’s Mill, one of the
largest flour mills in Canterbury
between 1867 and 1921.

‘I don’t believe I should be getting

Ian Telfer is preparing to take
on Santa duties for yet another
festive season – 62 years after he
first put on the iconic red-andwhite
coat.
It all began on Labour weekend
in 1962. Ian and his parents,
William and Jesse, were staying
at their holiday house in Tikao
Bay, a short drive north of Wainui
in Akaroa Harbour, which
Ian and his father had built
seven years earlier.
He met a girl on the beach and
the attraction was immediate
and mutual. By New Year’s, they
were a couple. That girl later
became his wife and the mother
of his two children. Ian and
Ally were married for 51 years
before she died in 2017 from a
pulmonary embolism.
Ian can’t remember exactly
what he said to her that first
day – only that “he was very
complimentary”.
Ian, now 84, taught her to
swim and water ski, while she
tried to teach him to dance, “neither
with much success”.
“I met this bird on the beach
and my life changed,” he said.
The following November,
while staying with Ally’s family,
he was handed a brown parcel
from his mother-in-law, Dulcie
Comfort. Inside was a red and
white coat Dulcie had handstitched
for him – without his
knowledge.
"She said, ‘there we go, you’re
Santa for family Christmas’,” Ian
said.
“I was a 16-stone prop, being
Father Christmas was nothing
I’d ever thought of.”
He argued his beard was
“black as spades” and he
couldn’t possibly play the iconic
figure, but Dulcie had anticipated
that too. She made him a
false beard to cover it.
“She had me right under her
little finger,” Ian said.

Ian, who had grown up as an
only child. Dulcie was one of 12
children and Ally’s father, Ernie,
was one of 11.
“There were aunts and uncles
and cousins and whatnot coming
out the woodwork in all
directions,” he said.
“But, you know, I had a ball. I
thoroughly enjoyed myself.”

the family’s church – and the gig
grew from there.
Since then, he has impersonated
Father Christmas all over
the country at work parties,
playcentres, schools, and family
photoshoots, never charging a
cent.
“I don’t believe I should be
getting paid for having so much
fun.
“I just enjoy seeing the joy on
people’s faces.”
Ian still wears the same suit
Dulcie made in 1963 and insists
it has never been washed.
“I’m terrified if I wash it, the
thing will fall apart,” he said.
He dreams of reaching 70
years as Saint Nick. Mentally he
feels up to it, but physically he’s
less confident.
He is blind in one eye and
partially blind in the other, and
three years ago he fell down his
outdoor steps and broke 10 ribs.
When he eventually hangs
up his duties, he won’t be retiring
the coat – he plans to pass
it on to one of his great-grand
nephews.

Akaroa’s Christmas in the Park
since 1998, and used to wander
around New World on Moorhouse
Ave giving out lollies and
offering hugs.
“There was even businessmen
in suits – that was probably the
nearest they came to empathy
and compassion in their business
life,” he joked.
He has 14 “duties” lined up in
the weeks before Christmas —
six of them in Rotorua, where
he will be appearing this week.

for 31 years, mostly

head office, but his job
required him to travel wherever
issues arose. He said he
and his family lived in nine
houses in seven years.
Ian decided to take early
retirement in 1994, aged 52.
“I was losing count of the
number of mates that I had that
were falling to cancer,” he said.
“I thought, well, if we’re
gonna have any sort of retirement,
we need to start it soon.”
He and Ally had planned to
retire in Paraparaumu, but
after spending Christmas at
their regular holiday spot in
Tikao Bay in 1997, Ally asked
him a question on the drive
home.
“She said, ‘how long is it
from Paraparaumu to Wellington’,
I said about an hour. Then
she said, ‘how long is it from
Christchurch to Tikao’, I said,
well, about an hour.”
“She said, why the hell are we
moving to Paraparaumu.”
So they changed course and
moved back to where it all
began — into the house Ian and
his father had built. He still
lives there today.
Over the years Ian has had
many memorable experiences
while serving as Santa, but one
standout happened at a specialist
school in Wellington in 1979.
After handing out presents,
a child told Ian there was still
Jesse who was waiting outside in
a hospital bed after her fourth
operation for spina bifida.
“I went out and there was this
little kid with the biggest smile
I've ever seen. I go to give her
the present and she held my
hand and she held my hand and
she held my hand,” he said.
“I planned on being there for
about an hour and it was threeand-a-half
hours before she
fell asleep and I could quietly
disengage.”
He still makes memories, with
or without the coat.
Just last week at New World in
Halswell, he felt a bump on his
leg. It was a little girl.
“She said, are you going to
grow your beard down below
your knees? I said no.”
“Why not?” she asked.
“Because if it gets too long,
it gets in the way of saying ‘ho,
ho, ho’,” he replied, to the girl’s
amazement.
It’s not just children who get
into the festive spirit. Ian said
people in their seventies and
eighties have sat on his lap to
tell him what they want for
Christmas.
He recalled 85-year-old
Wainui farmer Vern Shadbolt
sitting on his lap and saying he
wanted “a good crop of ewes
that produced twins”.
Ally joined him for many
duties as Mrs Claus, reading out
the names of children when his
eyesight failed.
“She loved being Mrs. Santa,
absolutely thrived on it,” he
said.
Even after Ally’s death, Ian
was never tempted to hang up
the red and white coat.

so I've just kept doing it,” he

For aspiring Santas, Ian
advises simply being themselves
and fully believing in the
character while wearing the
coat and beard.
Ian grew up in Christchurch,
raised solely by his mother until
he was four, while his father
served as a lieutenant during
World War 2, mostly fighting in
the Pacific.
His first memories are of his
father teaching him how to box.
“He started off with one hand
behind his back, up until I got
him right on the nose, from then
on it was both hands,” he said.
His grandmother Elizabeth, a
Presbyterian, insisted he attend
Sunday School at St Paul’s when
he was six.
He recalled an older boy who
acted as “commander”, hitting
him over the head whenever he
made a mistake.
“He probably hit me five or
six times and I just hit him once,
but I was the one banned from
Sunday school,” he said.
“I thought if that’s their bloody
attitude, they can stick it up
their jumper and I’ve thought so
ever since.”
He went on to become the
heavyweight boxing champion
at Christchurch Boys’ High.
Ian doesn’t see Santa as a
religious figure, comparing him
instead to Odin, a chief god in
Norse mythology.

“Compare what Odin
reportedly did, to what Santa
does, which is basically make
people happy all around the
world,” he said.
Ian played for the Boys’ High
first XV and Old Boys’ as a front
rower, alongside players like
John Graham and Tony Steele,
both future All Blacks.
But Ian’s job at BP
stopped him committing to
representative rugby.
After high school he
completed his national service
with the New Zealand Scottish
Regiment.
He recalled being in a bar,
buying drinks for his kilted
Scots companions, when two
patrons approached and asked
how things were “under the
skirt”.
“I put an arm around each of
them and banged their heads
together, picked up the glasses
and returned to the Scots,” he
said.
“These two then started to
fight one another and of course,
immediately that started the
whole place off, everyone was
suddenly having a punch up.”
Except for the Scots, who
sat up the back, observing
the chaos. They were the only
ones not barred from the
establishment.
Ian said his father’s selfdefence
lessons stayed with him.
“I’ve always been a big ugly
bugger, I’ve always hated bullies
and I’ve helped people when I
can,” he said.

busy building model boats,

Santa gets into festive groove
Santa had a busy weekend in Selwyn,
with appearances at Christmas
parades in Rolleston on Sunday and
Leeston on Friday night. A decent
crowd turned out for Rolleston’s
second annual parade and market,
despite high winds and temperatures
approaching 30 deg C.
Santa’s busy schedule continues
with the Lincoln Christmas Parade
and Market on Saturday from 9am-
12.30pm.
Santa will be in his grotto at the
Darfield Jail on December 17-19 from
3-6pm. Children will have the chance
to meet him, have their photo taken
and receive a small present.

One school, two cam

The construction of stage one of the
senior campus is drawing to a close
and we are eager to begin the move-in
phase. Southbase Construction has done
an amazing job at keeping the project on
track and ready for handover at the end
of this year. This allows us the summer
holiday period to set up the school,
ready for the new school year in 2026.
We recently had a walk through, and the
facilities in the Science and Technology
block are absolutely amazing and
will provide a world class learning
environment for our learners.
Physical Education and sports teams
have a new gym. A special thank you to
our Board of Trustees who paid for an
upgrade to the floor,
to ensure a wooden floor was installed.
We have begun planning for our
Whakatau Whare, the blessing of the
new site; and we’re looking forward to
opening the school in early February
2026 for our year 12 and 13 learners.
We are looking forward to working
closely with the Ministry of Education as
we begin the detailed design phase of
stage two.
This will cater for further curriculum
areas as well as permanent
administration space for staff.
YEAR 13 GRADUATION
We were thrilled to celebrate our class of 2025 with
whānau and friends on Monday 1 December. We are
exceptionally proud of these flourishing lancewoods
and wish them the best as they head on to their next
chapter, whether it be tertiary study, apprenticeships,
full time work or something else.
More widely across the school, we are
very excited to bring Into the Woods Jr.
to our school community in term one
2026. This production will be performed
at the current campus with actors,
singers, musicians and dancers and tech
crew coming together from across both
campuses exemplifying our one school
two campuses approach.
On the sporting front, our senior
mixed touch team – recently crowned
Canterbury Champs – compete at
Nationals in Rotorua this coming
weekend. We all have our fingers
crossed for another awesome result
from this standout team.
Once again we thank our school and

and we can’t wait to walk into the next
chapter of Horoeka Haemata with
you all.

to winning

​After falling at the final hurdle
last season, Canterbury Country’s
quest to reclaim the Hawke Cup
has started with a thumping win
over Buller.
Country dismissed Buller for
68 and 75, either side of declaring
at 300 for four, to secure
the maximum 16 competition
points and strengthen their bid
to become the zone 3 challenger
for the cup next year.
Opener Robbie Foulkes topscored
with 64 while English
county representative Will
Williams, playing for Peninsula-
Harbour during the northern
hemisphere winter, finished
with 63 not out.
Country fielded two debutants
– Weedons leg-spinner William
Jull, who took four wickets,
and Ohoka wicketkeeper Jesse
Jones who claimed three catches
behind the stumps.
The representative side will
play Canterbury A in two T20
matches at MainPower Oval
– one tonight and the other
next Wednesday – before their
Hawke Cup campaign resumes
on January 10 and 11 away to
Marlborough.

likely to return from injury
after Christmas to boost the

​Standalone Rolleston first XV ready to step up

The school year may have ended,
but for the first-ever Rolleston
College first XV rugby team,
preparations for next year’s
Miles Toyota Championship are
only just beginning.
Rolleston was previously part
of the Selwyn Combined team,
which entered the premiership
in 2017 and featured players
from Lincoln High, Darfield High,
Ellesmere College and Akaroa
Area School.
But from 2026, Rolleston will
go out on its own, fielding a standalone
team under the Rolleston
College banner. The other four
schools will continue together as
Lincoln Combined.
Rolleston rugby co-ordinator
Alby Wilson said the squad was
eager to get started under head
coach Ethan Harrison, the former
coach of the school’s under
16 side.
The first XV and under 16
teams already have three weeks
of training under their belts,
and will have their final hit-outs
today and tomorrow before
returning in January after the
holiday break.
“We'll send them away with
a little bit of homework, and
get them back mid-January to
start getting back in the flow of
things,” Wilson said.
Because the former Selwyn
Combined side has now split,
both Rolleston and Lincoln’s new
teams will drop to the second-tier
championship next season.

Rolleston College’s first XV will lean on the experience of players like prop Lennox Kopelani, who was a standout for Selwyn
Combined as a year 11 last season.

“Just them knowing how
competitive and how physical
the game is, it will be a shock to
a lot of our boys who have just
played in the Ellesmere scene.”
Wilson said he did not have a
set target for their first season,
but hoped the side would be
pushing for a top-four finish.
“We will look to be competitive
and play really competitive
rugby,” he said.
“We don’t have a number, but
a top four spot would be great,
just because I've seen the talent
in these boys, I've seen them
growing and I know what they're
capable of.”
Wilson said he hoped a strong
rivalry would develop between
Rolleston and Lincoln Combined,
with Selwyn now fielding two
first XV teams for the first time.
The two sides will meet for the
first time on Friday, April 24, in
a pre-season match under lights
at Rhodes Park, and at least once
more during the championship
season, with the date and venue
still to be confirmed.
“That's a game where we want
to put a stake in the ground and
say this is the same atmosphere
as a Christchurch Boys’ v Christ’s
College game.
“Whoever’s got the home
game, we’ll make that part of the
school day – we’ll have the whole
school doing the haka.
“We’ve got school spirit behind
it and we will show the co-ed
schools in Selwyn can still have
meaningful rugby.
“That will be a big game,”
Wilson said.

New Parade Route and Market Area
Due to the Gerald Street roadworks and ongoing upgrades
this year, we have changed the parade route and market area
for 2025.
Parade: The parade route is a slightly shorter circuit this
year. Parade floats will leave the Lincoln Event Centre at
10.30am and head down Meijer Drive, North Belt, James
Street, then over the Liffey bridge to Kildare Terrace and
back along North Belt, finishing on Meijer Drive.
Christmas Market: This year, the Christmas Market is
located in and around Liffey Springs Reserve.

Exciting highlights of the big day!
There will be so much to enjoy at
the Lincoln Christmas Parade and
Market this Saturday – here’s just
some of the highlights.
• Float Competition: Meet by 9.45 at
the Event Centre. All parade entrants
will be judged, and a monetary prize
will be awarded, $500 first prize, 2nd
prize $200, 3rd prize $100.
• Decorated Bikes Competition: A
popular event for kids up to year 8,
with prizes. Gathering starts at 9:30
near the Liffey Gallery, the judging
and prize giving is at 10am, then all
participants join the Parade behind
Santa as he passes the gallery.
• Santa’s Grotto: The grotto is at
the raised playground (swings) in
the reserve off North Belt and Liffey
Place. After the parade, take a photo
with Santa and share your Christmas
wishes and dreams.
• Food and Drink: Expect a variety
of stalls and caravans offering food,
treats and refreshments.
• Shopping: Browse the market
stalls for unique gifts and Christmas
goodies. Support our local volunteer
groups and crafts people. All In the
shade of the trees in the Liffey.
• The Ellesmere Jazz Band will be
entertaining us in the Liffey.
• Adam Allsorts will be clowning
around and sculpting balloons.
• There will be an abundance of
other activities to keep the little ones
entertained throughout the whole
morning, from facepainting to clowns
to horse and pony rides to bouncy
castles.
• We’ll have plenty of seating,
plenty of toilets, a Mums/Dads and
Bubs tent, and First Aid on hand if
needed. Come to the HQ if you’re lost
or need some information.

The jars should be sterilised if you
want to keep the pickle for any length of
time. Pour boiling water into them after
washing, or warm them in the oven. Pack
the jars full, with the liquor coming to the
top.
INGREDIENTS
1 small cucumber
1 large shallot
1 medium carrot
4 radishes
6 heaped Tbsp sauerkraut
For the pickle
6 Tbsp white wine vinegar
6 Tbsp cider vinegar
5 Tbsp malt vinegar
2 tsp fennel seeds
15 black peppercorns
8 juniper berries
1 tsp caster sugar
1 tsp salt
METHOD
• Peel the cucumber, then slice it in half
lengthways. Scoop out the core and its
seeds with a teaspoon and discard.
Cut the cucumber into 1cm-thick slices
and put them in a large bowl.
• Peel the shallot, slice into thin rounds
and add to the cucumber. Scrub the carrot
then, using a potato peeler, shave into
long ribbons. Add these to the bowl, then
thinly slice and add the radishes and
sauerkraut.
• In a small, stainless-steel saucepan
mix together the vinegars, fennel seeds,
peppercorns and juniper berries.
• Add the sugar and salt and place over
a moderate heat. Bring to the boil, stirring
until the sugar and salt have dissolved.
• Pour the hot pickling liquor over the
vegetables and toss gently together.
• Transfer to clean, sterilised storage
jars, seal and refrigerate overnight.
CHEESE AND PICKLE
MUSTARD-BUTTER SANDWICHES
Makes 2 sandwiches
Brushing with mustard butter before
grilling gives a crispness and delicious
piquancy to the bread. It also makes
the surface brown more quickly, so it is
worth keeping a sharp eye on the bread’s
progress as it cooks.
INGREDIENTS
150g fontina (alternatively Gruyere)
40g butter
4 Tbsp summer vegetable pickle (see
separate recipe)
4 slices sourdough bread
1 tsp dijon mustard
• When the underside of the sandwich
is golden, turn and cook the other side.
When the cheese softens and the bread is
golden brown, eat immediately.
GUACAMOLE, PICKLE
AND MOZZARELLA BAGEL
Makes 4
I prefer avocado that is not too ripe. The
pickle juice slices through the oily flesh
and also keeps its colour bright.
INGREDIENTS
2 avocados
1 small red chilli
2 tsp grain mustard
a small handful of coriander leaves
juice of ½ lime
1 Tbsp olive oil
4 bagels
1 × 200g ball mozzarella
8 Tbsp summer vegetable pickle (see
separate recipe)
METHOD
• Halve, stone and peel the avocados. Put
the flesh into a bowl, then crush it with a
fork.
• Finely chop the chilli and add to the
bowl. Stir in the mustard, coriander
leaves, lime juice and olive oil to give a
thick, mustard-seed-freckled cream.
• Split the bagels in half and toast the cut
side under a hot grill, or in a toaster until
lightly crisp.
• Tear the mozzarella into large,
irregular pieces and place on the bottom
half of the toasted bagels.
• Spread generously with the avocado
cream. Spoon the pickle on top and place
the other half of the bagel on top and
serve.
METHOD
• Coarsely grate the cheese. Melt the
butter in a pan and stir in the mustard;
don’t worry if it doesn’t mix perfectly.
Brush both sides of the bread with the
mustard butter.
• Heat a griddle pan or frying pan.
Divide the cheese between 2 of the slices
of bread.
• Drain the pickle, then spoon it on top
of the cheese, place the reserved pieces of
bread on top and press down firmly. Put
the sandwiches on the griddle or in the
pan and press down firmly with a palette
knife or a weight.

VEGETABLES
​At this busy time of year,
routine maintenance in the
garden can be bottom of the list.
Set aside a few minutes every
fine day to hoe around all crops,
except strawberries.
Hoeing promotes air
circulation, preventing the
ground becoming hard and less
able to take in water when it
rains.
Peas, lettuce, radish, turnips,
kohlrabi, mustard and cress,
spinach and carrots can still be
sown, while cabbage, cauliflower,
leeks and celery can be planted in
well-manured soil. Peas, runner
and other climbing beans already
growing should be staked.
Swedes may still be sown in
districts with a long autumn
growing season.
Add equal parts of blood and
bone and superphosphate to
the soil, and work it into the top
15cm, before sowing seeds in
drills 1cm deep and 40cm apart.
Speed germination by covering
with sacks or planks, but remove
covers as soon as seedlings
appear.

month, but care should be taken
to remove any malformed buds
and faded flowers.
Cut rose blooms in the early
morning or late in the evening
and they will last longer.
Mulching material will help
conserve moisture in the soil
and gradually rot down into

or leaf mould. Spread it evenly,
no more than 10cm thick, and
keep it away from plant stems.

The 4.4-litre M TwinPower
Turbo V8 delivers 430kW and
750Nm, free-revving all the way
to 7200rpm. The electric motor,
integrated into the transmission,
contributes 145kW and
280Nm – but a clever pre-gearing
stage boosts torque at the
transmission input to a staggering
450Nm. Combined, the
system unleashes a colossal
545kW and an eye-watering
1000Nm of torque
All this power is channelled
through an eight-speed
auto, the clever M xDrive
all-wheel-drive system and an
electronically controlled differential.
Together they form
the backbone of this high-end,
authentically luxurious performance
express.
The character of this M5 is
not solely defined by the addictive
thrum of its V8 exhaust
– though that alone will hook
any enthusiast. It now adds a
plug-in hybrid capability, allowing
all-electric running for
those quieter solo trips.
A fast-charging cable tailored
for public chargers makes
replenishing the high-voltage
battery quick and simple.
BMW claims up to 61km of
electric-only range, although
the test car managed just over
40km – handy rather than
groundbreaking.
Not for the faint-hearted are
the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus
modes, tailored specifically
for circuit use, with engine,
e-motor and cooling systems
configured to meet track
demands.
A new Boost mode – activated
by a long pull of the left paddle
– delivers extra punch between
30km/h and 150km/h for sudden
bursts of speed. I found
there was already more than
enough thrust on tap, but some
may enjoy knowing the option
exists.
For such a performance
juggernaut, its ease of use is
genuinely impressive.
Considering its size, the M5
is remarkably well-mannered
in urban driving, happy to potter
around without constantly
tugging at the leash. That’s in
contrast to some rivals that
seem restless driving anywhere
but the fast lane.
Passenger space is generous
front and rear, with excellent
head and shoulder room, plus a
cavernous, easily accessed boot.
Standout highlights include
the light, airy cabin, a newly
designed flat-bottomed heated
steering wheel with lovely tactility,
and the BMW Interaction
Bar with M-specific ambient
lighting that greets you with
‘Welcome’ and ‘Goodbye’ animations.
The Merino leather
trim looks and feels every bit as
premium as expected.
A centre-console control panel
houses model-specific buttons,
including the Setup switch to
tailor the drive system, transmission
logic, chassis, steering,
brakes and xDrive AWD settings
– and fine-tune the M HYBRID
modes to your preference. The
large panoramic sunroof is
among the best I’ve seen in a
luxury performance sedan.
This latest M5 is loaded with
advanced driver-assistance
tech, including Driving Assistant
Professional and Parking Assistant
Professional.
The suspension retains that
traditional taut BMW ride,
expertly smoothing out rough
surfaces and minimising noise
while still delivering the exceptional
road holding you’d expect
from a modern M performance
great.
For me, the M5 remains
the benchmark in its class –
its balance, poise and agility
on twisty, undulating terrain
deliver a feel-good factor that’s
off the scale.
Much of the credit goes to
the superbly balanced chassis
and finely tuned adaptive
suspension. BMW’s latest xDrive
AWD system also plays its
part, multitasking brilliantly
to provide immense traction
and grip while taming the

REAA - Understanding real estate jargon
Every industry is full of jargon and
buzzwords that make no sense to anyone
who’s not part of the club. Real estate is no
different, which means it can be hard to get
up to speed. Here’s a handy guide to some
of the most common terms you’ll come
across when buying or selling property.
Agency agreement: If you are using
a licensed real estate agent to sell your
property, you’ll need to sign one of these
agreements - it sets out what the agent will
do and what they will be paid. Remember
you can negotiate the conditions, such as
who pays for marketing and how much
the commission is. Make sure you get
legal advice before you sign, because it’s a
binding document.
BEO or BBO: This stands for ‘Buyer
Enquiry Over’ or ‘Buyer Budget Over’,
which means that price listed on the
advertisement indicates the minimum that
the seller will accept. The seller actually
needs to give serious consideration to any
offers over the BEO, so this figure needs to
be selected carefully.
Deadline Sale or Deadline Private
Treaty: In this kind of sale, a property
is marketed for a set period (with an
advertised end date). The seller can choose
to accept an offer at any stage during the
listing period though it may be stated in the
advertising that ‘no offer will be accepted
prior’. Check the fine print.
LIM: This stands for Land Information
Memorandum, which contains everything
that the local council knows about the
property, such as any issues with drainage
and plumbing, erosion or permits. It will
help you identify if any additions haven’t
got the right consent. A LIM will also record
any unpaid rates.
Sale and purchase agreement: This
is a legally binding contract between
the buyer and seller for the purchase/
sale of a property. It provides certainty
to both parties and it sets out in writing
all the agreed terms and conditions. It’s
essential to get legal advice before you
sign an agreement – and that you read and
understand what it means.
Settlement: This is the end goal in a
property transaction, when the sale and
purchase is completed by the exchange of
property and payment. Settlement occurs
when the seller receives the money for the
sale – the buyer will not receive the keys
until this happens.
RV: This stands for ‘Rateable Value’ – this
is a value used to calculate local body rates.
It should not be assumed to be a market
value for a property when it is for sale as
the rating valuation may be a number of
years old. It is also not responsive to local
market fluctuations and may not reflect
any recent renovations to a property. This
was formerly known as ‘Government
Value’, or GV.
Tender: If a property is for sale by
tender, prospective buyers must submit
confidential written offers by a set date.
Usually there is no minimum price, but
properties are often listed with a BEO or
BBO price. The seller can then choose the
offer that is most acceptable to them, based
on the price and any attached conditions.
The most attractive tender is likely to be
one that combines a good price with few
conditions. Sellers are allowed to negotiate
with any one or more of the tenderers
received after tenders close.
