A STUNNING

INTERNATIONAL

TRIBUTE TO THE

POWER AND BEAUTY

OF BIG, JUICY,

VOLUMINOUS AND

AUTHENTICALLY

TEXTURED HAIR.

Gary Kelly

● ELEGANT, FIERCE, FASHION-FORWARD.

“I love this look because it’s fearless. I

wanted to create something that celebrates

natural texture , structured, voluminous us

but still soft and wearable. Creating a shape

that feels both editorial and empowering.

The rich, copper tones give warmth and

catch the light, framing the face with

natural drama. For me, this look is about

showing the full spectrum of what textured

hair can be: elegant, fierce and fashionforward.

” Emma Simmons (UK)

▲ ART IN MOTION. “I was drawn to this

look for its sculptural quality–how the

braids become art in motion, shifting from

tradition into something entirely my own.

Inspired by the romanticism of historical

braided crowns, I wanted to breathe new

life into the form with expanded texture,

airy deconstruction, and weightless

movement. Intricate three strand twist

braids are woven seamlessly around the

head, with strategic pinning preserving

shape without sacrificing softness.”

Nanette Guild (USA)

◆ PURE VOLUME, RICH TEXTURE. “What

makes Afro hair so incredibly special is its

ability to defy gravity and create

architecture. The fullness, the softness, the

silhouette, it tells a story even before you

add colour or styling. There’s something

undeniably beautiful about the voluminous

finish that afro hair can achieve. It’s bold,

unapologetic, and demands attention, yet

it remains soft, elegant, and full of

individuality.” Chris Grimley (UK)

■ ANCIENT SYMBOLISM, REIMAGINED. “The

Koroba braids, rooted in Yoruba cultural

heritage, inspired me to merge tradition

with high fashion in a way that feels both

reverent and forward-thinking. This look

is a celebration of innovation through

storytelling–where texture is the language.

By reimagining braided circles that cascade

with intention, connecting ancient

symbolism to a futuristic editorial vision.”

■ WEARABLE ART. “I wanted this look to

embody self-expression and highlight the

power of texture. It’s rebellious yet refined,

and rooted in a love for the unusual and

unexpected. I wanted to explore something

different, even odd, and celebrate that.

Texture is often underestimated in its

ability to reshape a silhouette, and with this

look, I envisioned the hair as a bold

statement, like wearable art that pushes

boundaries. It’s about embracing odd

shapes and turning them into something

truly breathtaking and striking.” David

Barron (USA)

Styling: Clare Frith / Make-up: Maddie Austin

▲ PERFECT IMPERFECTION. “This look is

all about celebrating the natural texture

of the hair, enhancing those beautiful

ringlets without losing their effortless

feel. The honey blonde tones are layered

with highlights and lowlights to bring

out depth and movement, really

catching the light from every angle. It’s

about embracing texture and colour

with an effortless, lived-in vibe.”

◆ RAW AND REFINED. “I love this look

because it embraces and celebrates the

natural texture of the hair, allowing its

organic movement and personality to

shine through. The inspiration came from

wanting to work with, not against, the

hair’s natural state, enhancing it through

thoughtful colour placement that adds

dimension in synergy with the texture. ”

Chrystofer Benson (USA)

● VISUAL SYMPHONY. “Inspired by the

shifting patterns of a kaleidoscope, this

collection explores movement and

vibrancy through textured hair design.

Using diverse plating and styling

techniques, each look reflects the

captivating, ever-shifting patterns of a

kaleidoscope, where bold hues and

intricate details come together. The result

is a celebration of individuality and

creative expression.”

● VIBRANT SYNERGY. ““The starting point

for this image was PANTONE’s Mocha

Mousse, a luxurious brown that evokes

warmth and comfort. I was inspired to

create a vibrant synergy by blending this

rich tone with the earthy, reddish glow of

Himba women’s hair, a powerful memory

from my travels in Namibia that connects

directly to the lifeblood of the African

continent. The model’s pose adds to the

appeal, projecting a sense of relaxed

confidence and powerful grace.”

Anne Veck (UK)

■ ELECTRIC ENERGY. “I adore this look

because it captures fearless expression

through texture, volume, and striking

contrast. I was inspired by the raw,

unfiltered energy of nature - stormy skies,

electric energy, and the movement of wild

elements. The bold curls infused with deep

violets and indigos bring a sense of freedom

and power, while the structured styling and

netted fashion layer in futuristic elegance. ”

Georgia Mountain (UK)

▲ ATTIC REVERIE “This collection takes an

artistic approach to make us think and

dream, inviting a deeper connection to

creativity. Inspired by the layered textures

of an aged doll found in a dusty attic, it

explores innovative hair texture that

captures movement, depth, and dimension.

It’s about pushing boundaries while

honouring the familiar.”

Teresa Romero (USA)

◆ STATEMENT OF BEAUTY. “I absolutely love

this look because it’s a celebration of bold

texture and individuality. The voluminous

brushed out curl is a powerful statement of

natural beauty and freedom I wanted to

create a look that combined natural texture

with the softness and structure of vintageinspired

fashion. When creating this look,

it was important for us to work with the

model’s natural texture and create a colour

that partnered well with such a larger than

life style.” Petteri Rantaeilola (UK)

Gary Kelly

The 1970s launched

an unpredictable

journey through style.

Sometimes a bumpy

ride, they saw some

dizzying cultural shifts

and vibrant self-expression.

>>>33E

prochronicle

As we explored in our

summer issue, the 1960s

laid the fertile ground

for individual expression,

yet the next decade

saw that idealism meet

a harsher reality.

The free-flowing optimism that defined the late sixties

began to face tougher economic and social challenges,

giving rise to an explosion of incredibly diverse styles.

The 1970s moved away from a single defining look, instead

becoming a rich tapestry where hair and fashion served

as powerful channels for intense individual expression and

a sense of belonging within emerging subcultures. This

was a time when your chosen style loudly declared your tribe,

whether you were a disco queen, a punk rebel, or a laidback

bohemian, each look a response to the evolving world.

Actress Jane Fonda won the

Academy Award for Best Actress for

her role in the 1971 film Klute.

An Evolving Aesthetic

It’s true that the 1970s was a decade of rapid change in hair

and style, far more than a single look. From the lingering

bohemian influences of the early years, seen in relaxed,

natural hair and flowing garments, the decade quickly moved

through the polished glamour of disco and the theatricality

of glam rock. By its close in 1979, the emerging punk and

New Wave scenes had ushered in a starkly different

aesthetic, favouring sharper cuts, bolder colours in hair, and

more angular fashion silhouettes. This constant evolution

meant the early and late 70s truly felt like different eras in

hairdressing and fashion.

Iconic Hair Moments

Initially, the influence of the late sixties persisted with long,

straight hair, often with a simple centre parting, as seen on

icons like Cher and Ali MacGraw. This style embraced a

natural, often bohemian vibe, signifying a relaxed departure

from structured looks, fitting the era’s burgeoning

environmental awareness and a back-to-nature sensibility.

Quickly, the Shag emerged as a versatile, layered cut

popular for both men and women. Made famous by figures

such as Jane Fonda and Joan Jett, it offered a softer, more

rebellious edge, encouraging movement and mirroring a

desire for personal freedom in a changing world.

As the decade unfolded, Big Bouffant Afros became a

powerful and enduring statement. Worn with pride by stars

like Chaka Khan and Pam Grier, these voluminous, natural

styles symbolised Black identity and celebration, particularly

significant as civil rights movements continued to push for

equality. Around the same time, the Farrah Fawcett feathered

waves exploded onto the scene. This iconic, voluminous,

bouncy style, achieved with rollers and blow-dryers, defined

a new accessible sophistication for millions, arriving as

London on 8th March 1978 during the

making of a pop promo for their single

Dear' for Chrysalis Records.

television's reach expanded and a

new kind of accessible pop culture

celebrity took hold. For those

desiring a more structured yet

equally stylish look, the Purdey

Bob, famously worn by Joanna

Lumley in The New Avengers,

offered a chic, sharp alternative,

reflecting a growing appreciation

for strong, independent female characters in popular media.

The dazzling rise of Disco Curls also peaked during this

period. Voluminous, glamorous, and often highly styled,

these bouncy curls became synonymous with the disco

scene, perfected by divas like Diana Ross and Donna

Summer, shimmering under the dazzling club lights.

This celebratory style boomed as people sought escapism

and joy amidst economic uncertainties like the energy crisis,

finding release on the dance floor.

channels for intense

individual expression.”

California, January 1977.

International/Getty Images)

By the decade's close, Punkinspired

looks emerged as a stark,

anti-establishment contrast. Figures

like Debbie Harry and Siouxsie

Sioux showcased raw, defiant styles

featuring spiky cuts, often with

shaved sides, and vibrant,

deliberately shocking colours like

electric blue or shocking pink.

This represented a dramatic shift towards an anarchic and

bold aesthetic, challenging the mainstream glamour that

had dominated much of the decade and reflecting a growing

youth disillusionment with the establishment and a desire

to break all rules.

DECADE OF

UNDER-

CURRENTS

Beyond the evolving looks, the 1970s was a decade

shaped by significant societal shifts that deeply influenced

how people expressed themselves:

• Economic turbulence: The oil crisis and rising unemployment

led to widespread uncertainty.

• Social liberation: Movements like women's liberation

continued their fight for greater equality.

• Environmental awareness: Growing concerns influenced

a new back-to-nature aesthetic.

• Fragmented identities: The idealism of the sixties shifted as

people found their tribes through music, politics, and personal style.

• Style as identity: Hair and fashiaon became powerful ways

tovisually express beliefs and affiliations in an increasingly

complex world.
