Most of the instruments are

“ We will definitely be back,

making music here

is great fun! ”

Together with the other participants,

you will use the SoundLAB instruments

to create an entirely new musical piece,

which you will perform for each other

at the end of the workshop. A super fun

and unique experience that requires

no musical skills. Anyone can play!

We also organise special SoundLAB

workshops during festivals and events.

You can even have your birthday party

in the SoundLAB.

A music

laboratory

SoundLAB is a music laboratory featuring

a large collection of technological musical

instruments. The lab is housed within

Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam

– a leading venue for contemporary music

and sound art.

Through hands-on learning and playful

methods, the SoundLAB workshops for

schools encourage pupils to explore

sound and create music togerther.

SoundLAB is for everyone, regardless

of their background or abilities.

“Great fun! Very different

from music lessons at school.”

“I’ve discovered a new

talent in myself.”

For primary, special,

secondary and

higher education

During the SoundLAB workshop,

students will create their own

compositions under the enthusiastic

guidance of our experienced team.

At the end of the workshop, they will

present their music to each other. No

prior musical knowledge is required.

Key learning objectives: Developing

creative confidence, experimenting with

sound, making your own music and

collaborating with others. In consultation

with the teacher, the workshops can

be tailored to suit a specific learning

plan or subject theme. We customize

the workshops for special education.

Overview

Our collection

Sound artists and designers developed over 100

completely unique instruments for the Muziekgebouw.

The SoundLAB collection consists of digital and

electro-acoustic instruments, combined with

percussion. These instruments are played creatively,

using sensors, sliders or buttons. SoundLAB closely

follows the rapid developments in music technology

and education, continuously expanding the collection.

The workshops

The workshops are made to suit the participants.

Discover the joy of making music at a SoundLAB

birthday party or dive into the more theoretical

aspects during a Loopstation workshop. Unwind

with your colleagues with a teambuilding

workshop or challenge yourself to set sound

to film with the Soundtrack Live workshop.

SoundLAB on Tour

For children and teenagers who are not able to travel

to the Muziekgebouw, we bring the experience to

them with SoundLAB on Tour: a portable set of

instruments that allows us to give the workshop

anywhere. We also host SoundLAB on Tour

workshops at museums, festivals or other events.
