Look who’s back!
Bo home
after
ram-raid
BY KEES CHALMERS
Pet ram Bo is like a child to
Kathrine Calder-Ritchie and her
husband.
So when their knobbly kneed
3-year-old was stolen from a
paddock in Little River, they
were absolutely devastated.
But through a tip-off, a
$1000 reward for his return
and a bit of courage against
police advice, Bo is safe and
sound again, back where he
belongs.
Bo was taken mid-afternoon
13 days ago where Calder-
Ritchie had put their animals
in preparation for a shift to the
property later this month.
Witnesses reported seeing
three men in a red sedan,
wrangling Bo.
Calder-Ritchie said it was
believed Bo was lifted over a
padlocked gate and put in the
car’s boot.
She had feared the worst
when he was stolen: He had
been taken for meat.
Calder-Ritchie posted an
article on the theft from last
week’s Bay Harbour News
on the Rolleston Facebook
community group on Thursday.
About 5pm, she received a
reply to her post from someone
who said they had information
on Bo’s whereabouts.
That information led her to
a Burnham property which
she visited two hours later.
Kathrine Calder-Ritchie and her pet ram Bo, who is home safe and sound after being stolen.
The property was protected
by a padlocked gate. She was
nervous about approaching
the gate to get the attention
of who lived there, so called
the police and explained the
situation.
“They (police) basically
said, don’t go there, and they
would find someone available
to look into it further,” she
said.
“But I went there anyway, I
was just desperate to find him.”
She waved at the security
cameras on the property,
trying to get the attention of its
occupants, but to no avail. A
woman in a car then arrived, so
Calder-Ritchie explained why
she was there.
The woman went inside to
inquire about Bo. She came
back out and said there was no
sheep.
Calder-Ritchie thanked her
for the help and went back
home to Springston.
About 9pm, a glimmer of
hope appeared when she
received a Facebook message
from the woman at the
Burnham property, who said
her associate would like to help
her find Bo.
Calder-Ritchie assumed she
saw her post on the Rolleston
community page.
Calder-Ritchie then passed
on her phone number to the
woman.
NEWS Bay Harbour News, December 11, 2025 | 3
Petition opposes plans for school site
BY KEES CHALMERS
Pigeon Bay residents have gone
on the front foot in their bid to
prevent the old Kukupa School
from being turned into a mental
health retreat centre.
A petition signed by more
than 160 people was presented
to Te Pātaka-o-Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board on Monday.
The city council agreed to
lease the building to kaupapa
Māori mental health provider
Purapura Whetū Trust in 2022,
to be used as a mental health
retreat and camp. But finalising
the lease was on hold until the
community was consulted.
Now three years on, residents
and others connected to Pigeon
Bay have taken matters into
their own hands.
In October, about 40 residents
met to discuss their frustration
with the proposal and lack of
public consultation, which led
to Monday’s petition to the community
board.
The residents meeting was
prompted after city council staff
gave an update to the community
board in August, saying
the lease process was almost
complete.
This set alarm bells off for
residents.
The Kukupa School Reserve
Working Group was established
as a result, to examine the city
council’s process and PWT’s
proposal.
Jo Goven spoke on behalf of
the working group at Monday’s
community board meeting.
She said the lack of consultation
has led residents to
mistrust the process.
In 2022, the city council
agreed to consult with the community
before finalising the
lease. At the time PWT said
it was happy to consult with
the community, and would be
guided by the city council on
what form that took.
Pigeon Bay resident Peter
Staples, who presented the petition,
said consultation is yet to
happen three years on.
“The petition captures the
feeling of the local community
towards a process that shuts
out voices of local residents and
any solution,” he said.
But PWT chief executive
Karaitiana Tickell said no official
community consultation
has been carried out on the
trust’s behalf
and that is the
city council’s
responsibility.
“At no point
have we been
asked to communicate
with the
public or meet
with residents,”
he said.
PWT is awaiting
a feasibility study
Karaitiana
Tickell
on the site from the city council
before signing the lease.
Goven told the community
board the services PWT
provides, namely drug rehabilitation,
pose risks for residents
who live near the historic site,
given Pigeon Bay’s isolation
from emergency services.
More than 160
people have signed
a petition, opposing
the proposed use of
the old Kukupa School
in Pigeon Bay as a
mental health retreat
centre.
But Tickell told Bay Harbour
News addiction services
would not be part of the
programme.
The community board confirmed
the petition would be
forwarded to city council staff
for further assessment.
Kukupa School was originally
built in 1878 at a time when
Pigeon Bay’s population was
steadily increasing and is
a category 2 heritage listed
building.
The school roll peaked in 1889
with 55 students, then declined
until it closed in 1949.
It was used as a youth hostel
for many years before falling
into disrepair.
The city council last year
estimated the cost of restoring
the building to be $700,000.
Interactions
with seal
prompt
move, DOC
warning
BY PRETORIA GORDON
The Department of
Conservation is reminding
people not to feed or interact
with seals, after a kekeno pup
had to be relocated from the
Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River.
DOC ranger Mailee Stanbury
said the pup had travelled from
Redcliffs along the river to
Opawa. While DOC would have
prefered to leave it alone, Stanbury
said she had to move it
“because it was unsafe”.
She said the pup was being
hand-fed fish, and one person
had even taken it from the river
and put it beside the road.
“There were men there who
were saying that they were
going to take the pup and put it
in their bath at home, which is
completely inappropriate.”
Stanbury took the pup to Godley
Head late Friday night, but
it returned, prompted her to
release it in a bay past Akaroa
Harbour on Monday.
“These little seals are only
just weaned from their mothers
and need to learn to feed and
survive in the wild. . . We urge
the public to leave seals alone.”
Bo on safer
ground after
mercy mission
› From Page 1
Soon after a man rang,
asking if the $1000 reward
was legitimate, which she
confirmed.
The woman then sent a photo
of who she believed to be Bo.
Calder-Ritchie verified it
was him and gave her their
address.
Two men turned up to her
home about 1am on Friday with
Bo, who was on a trailer.
“I was just so stoked to see
him,” Calder-Ritchie told Bay
Harbour News.
“It’s amazing, I honestly
thought he would be dead or
beaten but the fact he’s still
alive is just next level crazy.
“It’s like out of a movie.”
She came out of the house
and thanked the men.
The men told her Bo was
found in Hoon Hay.
She gave them $800 for their
trouble and sent $200 to the
person who tipped her off.
While at the house, one of the
men asked her if would be possible
to eat a ram like Bo.
“I said, no, you wouldn’t eat a
ram, bro,” she said.
The couple has had Bo since
Bo the ram is still recovering from his
ordeal after being stolen.
his birth three years ago.
She said Bo is still a little bit
shaken from the experience.
The Eastern performing at Live at the Point earlier this year.
Live at the Point cut back
BY KEES CHALMERS
Popular summer outdoor
concert series Live at the Point
will be reduced from eight
to five days this year due to
volunteer fatigue and dwindling
funds.
The free-entry annual series
is held at the Godley House Gardens
in Diamond Harbour over
January and February.
Next year the event will run
every Sunday from January 11
to February 8.
For next year’s series, Diamond
Harbour Events applied
to the city council’s Strengthening
Communities Fund for
$18,000 to cover musician fees.
A grant of $5000 was approved.
The event also received $2900
from the Creative
Communities
Fund, also administered
by the city
council.
Event organiser
Al Park said city
council funding
had fallen
substantially over Al Park
the past three
years.
Live at the Point also used
to receive an annual grant of
about $10,000 from the Rata
Foundation, but that stopped
three years ago, he said.
Fellow organiser Tim
Pattinson said the concert
series costs about $40,000 to
run annually and is entirely
volunteer-led.
“We have no interest in making
money for ourselves, we do this
entirely to do a nice thing for the
peninsula community,” he said.
Park said the festival would
not have gone ahead in January
without an increase in funding
from the Maritime Union NZ.
Typically receiving about $2000,
the event was given $5000 this
year.
“It’s meant we’ve got at least
another year out of it,” he said.
Park said Live at the Point
can attract up to 900 people
for bigger artists such as The
Eastern.
“It’s good for Diamond
Harbour businesses, good for
the ferries, and it’s just good for
people being able to get out and
see bands with no cost to them.”
Creative dream for derelict stables site
BY KEES CHALMERS
A plan to turn an abandoned
historic building into a haven for
artists is taking shape.
Te Puna Auaha Trust chair
Paul Dietsche and conservation
architect Tony Ussher
want to transform the derelict
former Lyttelton Borough
Council Stables on Donald St
into a functional creative hub
for artists, musicians,
designers
and community
groups.
“For Lyttelton,
with such a strong
arts community, I
think it’s a really
easy fit,” Dietsche
said.
“If we can get Paul Dietsche
that space up and
running, then we can get some
really talented people in there
doing some amazing things.”
Dietsche said the idea came
after repeatedly seeing Facebook
posts from local artists searching
for workspace.
"I’ve been looking at that building
for quite a while and saying,
‘wouldn’t it be amazing if something
was done with it’.”
The heritage building, built
in 1914, was severely damaged
in the 2011 earthquakes and
became unsafe to occupy. It has
remained empty and unused
since.
Last year, the city council
tasked its development agency
ChristchurchNZ with finding
a way to repair and reuse
A community initiative is looking to restore the Lyttelton Borough Council Stables to its former glory by turning it into a
haven for local artists.
the stables and
develop the site.
At a Te Pataka
o Rakaihautu
Banks Peninsula
Community
Board meeting
in August 2024,
ChristchurchNZ
development partnership
manager
Tony Ussher
Amanda Healy outlined a range
of possibilities for the site, including
hospitality outlets, visitor
accommodation, an entertainment
venue, community spaces
and terraced housing.
However, a ChristchurchNZ
spokesperson confirmed on Monday
the agency has not worked
on the project for the past year.
Dietsche said he does not
think the agency’s plan would be
a good fit for Lyttelton.
“It all sounds very nice, but
who’s going to be able to afford
to be in there?
“Is it going to be actual local
artists or is it just going to be too
expensive.
“If we, as a community, don't
get into it and activate it, then
it's probably going to be something
that isn't necessarily a
good fit,” he said.
Dietsche and Ussher presented
their proposal to the community
board on Monday, seeking support
for the plan.
Said board chair Lyn Leslie:
“It’s early days, but it’s a fantastic
community initiative.”
She asked city council staff
to determine if any remaining
funds from the 2013 Lyttelton
Master Plan could be used for
the project.
Dietsche has requested the city
council carry out basic remediation
on the building and provide
a full geotechnical report on the
site.
The next step is to file an
online expression of interest
in the stables site with the city
council, followed by a detailed
proposal with estimated costs.
If the project progresses,
Dietsche is confident funding
can be found, suggesting a
model similar to the communityled
rebuild of the Governors Bay
jetty could be used.
The development would also
house Lyttel Creators Space, a
youth initiative led by Dietsche
and Lyttelton Harbour Business
Association chair Sabrina
Saunders.
It aims to equip young people
aged 15-25 who are not pursuing
tertiary education with life
skills, mentorship and clear
career pathways.
“It will give young people an
opportunity,” Dietsche said.
“Those who are not able to
go on to university, or if high
school wasn’t really for them –
they still have the abilities but
don’t have the tools to activate
them.”
Dietsche and Ussher have
spent the past two years engaging
with local creatives, who
are enthusiastic about having a
centralised workspace.
“There’s a lot of momentum
and the timing just seems to be
right for this sort of project,”
Dietsche said.
The Seafarers’ Centre has also
expressed interest in using the
stables site.
A temporary portacabin on
Norwich Quay has served as the
Seafarers’ Centre since 2015,
after its original building suffered
earthquake damage.
Centre chaplain John McLister
said the current facility is no
longer adequate, with about 350
people visiting each month.
“(The city council) owns
a port, and one of the vital
services seafarers need when
arriving in this port is a
Seafarers’ Centre,” he said.
Play tackles ‘normalised’ youth vaping
BY DYLAN SMITS
Young footballers turned actors
are taking a stand against youth
vaping.
The 10 players appear in Ali
Tries Vaping, a comedy put on
by All Stars Theatre Company.
Formed from the Muslim Boys
Football Club, the actors, aged
11-14, are aiming to perform
at primary and intermediate
schools across
the city.
Writer and
director Kynan
Buckingham
said he was
prompted to
create the play
after seeing a
rise in vaping
among adults
and youth at Al
Noor Mosque.
Kynan
Buckingham
“I do see some vaping around
the mosque area, which we
don’t really want to become
normalised. So I thought this
might be a good fun way to give
the message to the youth that
this shouldn't be your way of
life,” he said.
The Asthma Respiratory
Foundation New Zealand 2024
report shows vaping increases
significantly among teens as
they go through high school.
It found 2.7% of year 7 and
8 students had vaped in the
sewven days before they were
surveyed, rising to 8.6% among
year 9-11 students and 21.9%
for year 12 and 13.
Buckingham wants to spread
a message against vaping to
primary and intermediate
school children ahead of their
teen years, when vapes will
become more widely
used and accessible by their
peers.
A Canterbury University
study last year found many
vape stores are located close to
schools, with 30% within 400m
of a school and 71% within
800m.
Ali Tries Vaping follows
17-year-old Muslim boy Ali
after he moves to a big city and
decides to take up vaping.
Vape sellers seem friendly
and give Ali a good deal, but
through comedic moments,
the play explores whether they
really have his best interests at
heart.
In the end Ali has to decide if
it is worth risking his health to
look cool.
“The actors have really
worked hard over the last two
months of rehearsal. They’re
really really loving it,” said
Buckingham.
The first performance, which
is open to the public in general,
is at Spreydon School on
Saturday at 3.20pm. Doors open
at 3pm.
Entry is by gold coin
donation.
‘Alcohol in
brains out’
on crate day
BY KEES CHALMERS
A group of young men were
“extremely lucky” their crate
day bonfire did not have more
serious consequences when it
got out of control.
The Akaroa Volunteer Fire
Brigade was called to Archdalls
Rd in Robinsons Bay about
11.30pm on Saturday, after
the bonfire spread to a nearby
hedge.
Fire chief Mark
Thomson said
the men were
also setting off
fireworks.
“Alcohol in,
brains out,” he
said.
Thomson
estimated the
men were
Mark Thomson
between 18 and 20 years of age.
He said a few had the sense
to apply water to the blaze
to prevent it from spreading
further.
One had called the fire
brigade.
Thomson said it took the
brigade about 40 minutes to put
out the fire.
It was “extremely lucky” the
fire did not spread further.
The situation could have
been more serious if the
wind had picked up and the
surrounding bush caught fire,
Thomson said.
Dog upsets
nesting birds
at Estuary
BY KEES CHALMERS
Tanya Jenkins is concerned
after an unleashed dog wreaked
havoc on a group of nesting
birds on Saturday.
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary
Ihutai Trust manager said the
dog swam across to the islands
in McCormacks Bay.
Its owner called out to the dog
but it would not come, forcing
him to wade through the water
to retrieve it.
“The Estuary
Trust raised funding
and worked
hard to drag
truckloads of
gravel across to
an island to try
and attract the
critically endangered
black-billed
gulls back to nest Tanya Jenkins
here,” Jenkins
said.
“To our delight they came
back to nest, just to be disturbed
by this dog which was
totally not under control. We
are devastated.”
The trust notified city council
dog officers and Jenkins hopes
they follow up on the incident.
Jenkins cited the new dog
bylaw, introduced last month,
which states dogs must be on a
lead along walking tracks and
are not allowed on the mudflats
or islands.
Sports gear project bags top award
A community-driven project
to help children play sports
by recycling gear has been
recognised nationally.
Gear Up Ōtautahi took out
the top spot in the outstanding
community recreation
programme category at the
2025 Recreation Awards,
which celebrate the projects,
programmes, facilities, and
people shaping the future of
recreation.
“This is a
fantastic result
for a project
that has helped
hundreds of
tamariki across
Christchurch and
Banks Peninsula
get involved in
sport,” said city John Filsell
council head
of community support and
partnerships John Filsell.
“This win reflects the
creativity, collaboration, and
commitment from the many
people that make this project a
success.”
Gear Up Ōtautahi – originally
known as Give Gear Get Great
– began in 2015 as a one-off
sports equipment drive, with
donated gear redistributed at
community events.
The idea, conceived by
then-Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board chair
Karolin Potter, quickly gained
momentum and grew into a
city-wide movement.
People can donate their
used or outgrown sports gear,
Gear Up Ōtautahi – originally known as Give Gear Get Great – was created by former Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board
chair Karolin Potter, left, as a one-off sports equipment drive. Potter is pictured with city council community governance
manager Emma Pavey.
excluding helmets and clothes,
that is in good condition to the
more than 30 collection bins
around the city. The gear is then
redistributed at community
events.
Filsell said thousands of
items, including boots, balls,
and other equipment, have
been re-homed, directly
reducing the financial barriers
for young people to participate
in sport.
“They can then join teams,
stay active and feel included.
The project also helps combat
all the waste generated by
unused or outgrown sports
gear,” he said.
A key goal of the project
was to create a sustainable
model that would allow the
community to eventually take
ownership from the council,
and earlier this year, Gear
Up Ōtautahi became a fully
community-led and operated
programme,
The city council was also
a finalist in the Recreation
Awards’ outstanding event
category for its Children’s Day
2025 event.
We’re investing in your electricity network
Have your say on our plans
To continue providing the safe, reliable and resilient
power supply that you depend on, we must invest
more. This includes renewing ageing assets,
expanding capacity, and strengthening resilience.
Electricity use is changing, so we’re also making
the network smarter to support two-way energy
flows and technologies like solar and batteries –
giving you more choice and us more flexibility to
meet demand. While this means a small increase in
electricity distribution charges, you’ll benefit from
a reliable and future-ready network.
STUCK for a fresh Christmas gift
idea? Look no further - give the gift
of meticulously crafted home-style
Japanese cuisine with a beautiful Maru
Kitchen Gift Voucher illustrated by Fion.
Since opening in Sumner Village a
few months ago, owner/operator Fion
Stewart said they have grown a good
base of regular and new customers.
“All our items are freshly made on
site using quality seasonal produce.
People tell us they can really taste the
freshness in our food,” explains Fion. “I
have always had a passion for Japanese
food and excited to set up my first small
kitchen that blends Japanese cuisine
and lifestyle. From palette to plate, I
treat food presentation like art. I like to
experiment with ingredients to create
‘joyful bites’. My food is not heavy,
it is light, simple, healthy, and full of
flavour.”
As an eatery, the Maru Kitchen is
small with limited seating, so currently
more suited to takeaway and open from
Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am to
3.30pm.
On offer in the display cabinet is a
generous selection ranging freshly
made sushi, bento, salads and desserts.
It is nothing like a food hall sushi bar.
The attention to detail and presentation
of each item is stunning - it almost looks
far too good to eat! Fion’s background as
an Artist (examples of her water colours
decorate the walls) reflects in her food.
Looks aside, on first taste it’s the burst
of fresh mouth watering flavours that
set Maru Kitchen above any mass
produced sushi bar.
The kitchen is also set up for outcatering
and offers Maru’s exquisitely
presented selection as catering packs
for any occasion.
“I can add a beautiful touch to your
A day to remember kaumātua’s
legacy and strengthen community
Rāpaki Tangata
Tiaki chairman
Nuk Korako
pays tribute
to kaumātua
Henry Couch
ahead of the group’s Christmas
celebrations
The Rāpaki Tangata Tiaki
(Guardians of Whakaraupō/
Lyttelton Harbour) will
gather on Saturday for our
annual Christmas party, a
day especially for our Rāpaki
kaumātua (elders) and our
tamariki (children).
This year, it will carry a different
weight. It will be the first
time we come together without
our tangata tiaki kaumātua
Henry Couch there in person,
yet his presence will be felt in
everything the day stands for.
The Christmas party is not
just a social event: It is one of
Henry’s legacies.
In the days before Henry left
us in November, the moana
spoke in its own language.
A school of aihe (dolphins)
was seen moving through
Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour,
and a tohorā (whale) was
sighted in Akaroa Harbour.
For many of us, these were
not random moments; they
were a tohu (a natural sign) a
messenger from the atua (our
esoterical gods) and our tupuna
(ancestors) – a sign that Henry
was preparing to make his
journey beyond the veil, and
that we, the Rāpaki Tangata
Tiaki, must assist the whānau,
to prepare for his departure.
Henry believed kaitiakitanga
(guardianship) is not only what
we do on the water or in the
meetings, but also what we pass
on, quietly and consistently,
from generation to generation.
He understood when our
kaumātua are honoured, our
people stand taller. And when
our tamariki are surrounded by
aroha, laughter and belonging,
they grow up knowing exactly
who they are, and who they are
responsible to.
Rāpaki Tangata Tiaki’s Christmas gathering will be both a celebration and a
memorial for kaumātua Henry Couch.
That was Henry Couch, a man
who built the future by caring for
the people right in front of him.
But as we gather to celebrate
the coming of Christmas, we
must also hold the other truth
that Henry carried – the one
that sat heavy in his heart near
the end. His greatest sorrow
was Te Awaparahi Bay: a place
that should be remembered
as a nursery of life, a cradle of
abundance and a sustaining
ground for mahinga kai, is
now, in our eyes, diminished
by reclamation and the impacts
of development described by
others as “progress”.
At the Lyttelton Port Company
annual meeting, it was spoken
of in the language of “progress”.
But Henry, and many in our
community, felt the cost. He
carried that mamae (sadness)
not as bitterness, but as grief
for what was being lost and
for what our mokopuna
(grandchildren) might never
know if we do not change
course.
After Henry’s passing,
we are too tired to do our
Te Awaparahi Bay hīkoi
(march) to raise awareness
of the destruction through
reclamation. The passing of
Henry has taken something
out of us, and the ongoing
works in the “killing fields” of
Te Awaparahi Bay have added
another layer of exhaustion.
But our tiredness does not
mean consent. It means grief.
It means we are carrying too
much, while watching too
much.
In 2026, we will come back,
better organised and better
equipped. Our lament hīkoi will
be a poroporoaki (farewell), a
tangihanga (funeral) for our
spawning grounds for the harbour
taonga of sea life.
To the Lyttelton Port
Company: “E hoa, ka whawhai
tonu mātou, ki a koe, ake tonu
atu, mō te whakangaromanga
o te taiao o Whakaraupō.”
(Friend, we will fight you
forever, forever over the
environmental destruction of
Lyttelton Harbour.)
And that is why Saturday
matters so much.
It will be both a celebration
and a memorial. We will share
kai, welcome “Hanakoko”
(Father Christmas), we will
listen to the voices of our little
ones, we will embrace our
kaumātua, and in doing so
we will be doing what Henry
always wanted – strengthening
the bonds that hold our
community together. Even
in grief, we will uphold joy.
Even in loss, we will protect
warmth. Even with tears close
to the surface, we will keep the
environmental protection of
Whakaraupō at Rāpaki alive.
We will remember
Henry not only as a Rāpaki
Tangata Tiaki who carried
the responsibilities of the
moana, but as a kaumātua
who ensured our people kept
gathering kai moana (seafood)
so our tamariki could see what
“We will remember Henry not
only as a Rāpaki Tangata Tiaki
who carried the responsibilities
of the moana, but as a
SPORT
Rising stars, veteran set for international stage
BY KEES CHALMERS
Two of them finished high
school last year, and the other
was born just before Neil
Armstrong walked on the
moon, but all three Heathcote
cricketers will represent New
Zealand on the international
stage in 2026.
Callum Samson, 19, and
Hunter Shore, 18, learned on
Tuesday that they will be on the
plane to Zimbabwe in January
to represent New Zealand at the
Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
At the same time, 56-year-old
John Garry has been selected
for the New Zealand over-
50s team to face Australia in
Christchurch in February.
The trans-Tasman rivals will
play three one-day matches and
contest the first-ever masters
test match – a three-day game at
MainPower Oval in Rangiora.
Shore said he woke up on
Tuesday feeling nervous, knowing
head coach Anton Devcich
would be calling at some point
to confirm whether he had
made the squad.
The fast bowler and his flatmates
spent most of the day
huddled around Shore’s phone,
waiting for it to ring.
When it finally did, he rushed
outside to take the call – and
heard the good news.
“I was shaking, I just couldn’t
believe it,” Shore said.
“I called my whole family and
they were stoked. It was just a
great moment.”
Samson and Shore earned
their spots through strong
Callum Samson, left, and Hunter Shore earned their spots in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad through strong performances for Canterbury at last week’s national
under-19 tournament, while Heathcote stalwart John Garry has previously made 12 appearance for the NZ over-50s side.
performances for Canterbury
at last week’s national under-19
tournament, along with standout
showings at New Zealand
training camps over winter.
“All the hard work finally
paid off,” Samson said.
“Something I’ve dreamt of for
the last few years is making this
team, so it’s pretty cool.”
Samson, an allrounder, bats
right-handed and is a useful
left-arm seam bowler.
Both Shore and Samson have
become regulars for the Heathcote
premier side this year,
their first full senior season
since leaving school.
“I’m loving it, it’s a good
group of guys we’ve got, so it’s
very enjoyable,” Samson said.
Said Shore: “It's been so good,
especially having guys like
Tyler (Lortan) and Travis (Muller)
who have played a lot of
high-level cricket – you learn
heaps.”
Samson was captain of the
Christchurch Boys’ High first XI,
and Shore was a first XI player
at Christ’s College.
Both are eager to get stuck
into preparations, with a training
camp for the 15-man squad
scheduled for next week at Bert
Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln.
While Samson and Shore prepare
for their World Cup debuts,
Garry is gearing up for his first
masters test match after learning
of his national selection through a
Facebook post last week.
A Heathcote stalwart for more
than 30 years, he still turns out in
the second-tier Metro championship
grade, driven in part by the
chance to play alongside his sons,
Jackson and Louie.
Jackson plays in Heathcote’s
championship team, while Louie
is set to join them after finishing
at Christ’s College.
“It’s a real treat,” Garry said of
playing alongside his sons.
Since his debut at the 2020 Masters
World Cup in Cape Town,
Garry has made 12 appearances
for the NZ over-50s side.
The opening bat is looking forward
to playing in the inaugural
masters test match, though he is
wary of how his body will cope.
“It’ll be exciting to be able to do
that, especially at our age, but we
might be suffering if we’re in the
field for a day-and-a-half.”
Garry relishes the chance to
play high-level masters cricket.
“It keeps so many of us
playing the game and it’s very
competitive. It’s not golden oldies,
it’s proper cricket,” he said.
Grave restoration revives forgotten Titanic link
BY GEOFF SLOAN
A long-neglected grave in
Linwood Cemetery with a littleknown
link to one of history’s
most infamous maritime
disasters has been brought back
to life.
It belongs to Christchurch
teacher Ada Florence Murdoch
(née Banks), who married William
McMaster Murdoch, the
first officer aboard the Titanic
when it sank, later the subject
of controversy and debate surrounding
his final actions and
death.
In 1912, the
state-of-the-art
ocean liner was on
its maiden voyage
from Southampton
to New York
when it struck an
iceberg and sank,
claiming more
than 1500 lives.
“It’s a tragedy
that still fascinates
people to this day,”
Simon
Strombom
said New Zealand Remembrance
Army founder Simon Strombom,
who organised the gravestone’s
restoration.
The retired New Zealand Army
major and decorated Afghanistan
veteran leads a group of
volunteers dedicated to preserving
neglected graves and
memorials of military service
personnel across the country.
Strombom said while Ada
Murdoch did not serve in the
armed forces, her grave was
internationally significant.
“Our charity obviously focuses
on restoring service graves, but
this story was just so exceptional,
we felt we needed to do
the right thing by her and recognise
(Murdoch’s) service by
putting her grave back together.
It is something that should be
protected.”
The NZRA was alerted to the
historic significance of the earthquake-damaged
grave by the NZ
Returned and Services’ Association’s
London-based official
historian Dr Andrew Macdonald.
“We almost fell over backwards
when we realised who
and what it was.”
Strombom said their research
showed Ada’s husband, William
Murdoch held the rank of
lieutenant in the Royal Naval
Reserve, and served on ships
operating between New Zealand,
Australia and the UK.
Ada Florence Murdoch died in 1941, aged 65, and was buried in the Banks family plot in Linwood Cemetery. Her gravestone
was recently restored by the NZ Remembrance Army.
“So there was a really strong
connection.”
Ada Florence Banks was born
in Christchurch in 1873, growing
up in a politically progressive
family.
She, along with her mother and
older sisters, signed the petition
for women’s suffrage in 1892.
William McMaster Murdoch
was born in Scotland in 1873.
Like his father and grandfather
before him, he went to sea.
A member of the Royal Naval
Reserve, he joined the White Star
Line in 1900 after serving on a
number of naval ships.
Ada, then a 29-year-old teacher,
met Murdoch aboard the Runic,
a White Star liner travelling from
Sydney to England in 1903.
Ada’s family was originally
from Scotland, and she was on
her way to live there after taking
up a hospitality role with a
shipping line.
The pair hit it off and began a
long-distance correspondence.
They married in Southampton
in 1907, when Banks was 33.
In 1912, Ada paid a visit to her
husband on his latest ship, marvelling
at the size and grandeur
of the RMS Titanic.
It was just six days before the
ship departed on its ill-fated
voyage on April 10.
Murdoch had originally been
appointed chief officer for the
maiden voyage, but a last-minute
reshuffle after Captain Edward
Smith took command saw him
demoted to first officer.
Strombom said controversy
surrounded Murdoch’s role on
the night of the disaster, as he was
the officer in charge of the bridge
when the Titanic hit an iceberg at
11.40pm on April 14.
“In the movie Titanic, he was
portrayed as panicking when he
was loading the lifeboats. The
movie portrayed him as a bit of
a hothead and firing a pistol,” he
said.
“Someone did fire a pistol in
the air, but that has never been
attributed to him.”
As passengers were being
loaded into lifeboats, Strombom
said Murdoch’s side of the ship
keeled over and he was swept
into the water, where he is
believed to have drowned. His
body was never recovered.
He is credited with overseeing
the launch of about 10 lifeboats,
saving many of the survivors.
“From all accounts from the
survivors, he did his job really
well,” Strombom said.
Second officer Charles Herbert
Lightoller, who survived after
diving into the water, later wrote
to Ada, co-signing a letter with
the other surviving officers
expressing their “deep sympathy
in this, your awful loss”.
Lightoller said the letter also
served to “refute the reports that
were spread in the newspapers”.
English newspapers had published
conflicting and unverified
reports of a shooting and possible
suicide by an officer during the
evacuation.
The letter stated Murdoch
was “working hard, personally
assisting, overhauling the forward
boat’s fall”, and Lightoller
insisted “other reports as to the
ending are absolutely false. Mr
Murdoch died like a man, doing
his duty.”
The negative portrayal of
Murdoch in director James
Cameron’s Oscar-winning 1997
movie caused significant distress
for Murdoch’s family and
sparked public backlash in his
hometown of Dalbeattie, Scotland,
where he is remembered
as a hero.
Film executives later travelled
to the town in 1998 to formally
apologise for the depiction.
Because Ada’s husband had
been the officer in charge of the
Titanic that night, Strombom
said a great deal of media
attention fell on her.
In 1917, she moved back
to New Zealand to live with
her father and two sisters in
Christchurch.
“She never remarried and
lived a quiet life out of the
spotlight,” Strombom said.
Ada was said to have told her
family her only disappointment
in the marriage was that she and
William never had children.
Ada Murdoch died on April
21, 1941 aged 65 and was buried
in the Banks family plot in
Linwood Cemetery.
As part of their restoration
process, Strombom said the
NZRA makes every effort to
contact relatives.
“We didn’t have much luck.
I suspect they’re probably in
Scotland, but there might still be
some New Zealand connections.”
Though Ada Murdoch lived a
quiet life in Christchurch, the
Titanic connection ensures her
story remains part of maritime
history.
William McMaster Murdoch was originally appointed chief officer for the Titanic’s maiden sailing, but a late reshuffle saw Captain
Edward Smith take charge. The liner struck an iceberg on April 14 and sank, claiming 1500 lives, including Murdoch’s. PHOTOS: GETTY
MOTORING
Hybrid muscle
helps M5 raise
the bar again
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Rating out of 10: Performance 9, Handling 9, Build Quality 8, Comfort 7, Space 8, Styling 8, Fuel Economy; On
road test average consumption, 8.5L /100km, Value for money 7, Safety, 5 Star EuroNCAP rating
Overall points out of 10: 9
Improving on the epic M5
– already one of the finest highperformance
luxury sedans
around – was a daunting
assignment for BMW. But they
have nailed it in emphatic
fashion.
The team charged with this
challenge applied serious engineering
ingenuity, trademark
Germanic attention to detail
and a healthy dose of plug-in
hybrid tech to create a modern,
stylish and immensely potent
successor to its hugely impressive
predecessor. It catapults
the already vaunted M5 badge
to even loftier heights – an
extraordinary achievement in
itself.
A distinctive styling package
features muscular wheel
arches, side skirt extensions,
a sculpted front apron and an
aerodynamically optimised M
rear spoiler, all finished in highgloss
black.
The nicely proportioned lines
give this M5 its commanding
and aggressive road presence.
Joining the exclusive BMW M
club comes at a price, in this
case $244,900.
This latest M5 sedan is the
third BMW M model in the
current line-up to run the
M HYBRID system from the
company’s M Hybrid World
Endurance Championship race
car.
The 4.4-litre M TwinPower
Turbo V8 delivers 430kW and
750Nm, free-revving all the way
to 7200rpm. The electric motor,
integrated into the transmission,
contributes 145kW and
280Nm – but a clever pre-gearing
stage boosts torque at the
transmission input to a staggering
450Nm. Combined, the
system unleashes a colossal
545kW and an eye-watering
1000Nm of torque
All this power is channelled
through an eight-speed
auto, the clever M xDrive
all-wheel-drive system and an
electronically controlled differential.
Together they form
the backbone of this high-end,
authentically luxurious performance
express.
The character of this M5 is
not solely defined by the addictive
thrum of its V8 exhaust
– though that alone will hook
any enthusiast. It now adds a
plug-in hybrid capability, allowing
all-electric running for
those quieter solo trips.
A fast-charging cable tailored
for public chargers makes
replenishing the high-voltage
battery quick and simple.
BMW claims up to 61km of
electric-only range, although
the test car managed just over
40km – handy rather than
groundbreaking.
Not for the faint-hearted are
the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus
modes, tailored specifically
for circuit use, with engine,
e-motor and cooling systems
configured to meet track
demands.
A new Boost mode – activated
by a long pull of the left paddle
– delivers extra punch between
30km/h and 150km/h for sudden
bursts of speed. I found
there was already more than
enough thrust on tap, but some
may enjoy knowing the option
exists.
For such a performance
juggernaut, its ease of use is
genuinely impressive.
Considering its size, the M5
is remarkably well-mannered
in urban driving, happy to potter
around without constantly
tugging at the leash. That’s in
contrast to some rivals that
seem restless driving anywhere
but the fast lane.
Passenger space is generous
front and rear, with excellent
head and shoulder room, plus a
cavernous, easily accessed boot.
Standout highlights include
the light, airy cabin, a newly
designed flat-bottomed heated
steering wheel with lovely tactility,
and the BMW Interaction
Bar with M-specific ambient
lighting that greets you with
‘Welcome’ and ‘Goodbye’ animations.
The Merino leather
trim looks and feels every bit as
premium as expected.
A centre-console control
panel houses model-specific
buttons, including the Setup
switch to tailor the drive system,
transmission logic, chassis,
steering, brakes and xDrive
AWD settings – and fine-tune
the M HYBRID modes to your
preference. The large panoramic
sunroof is among the best
I’ve seen in a luxury performance
sedan.
This latest M5 is loaded with
advanced driver-assistance
tech, including Driving Assistant
Professional and Parking
Assistant Professional.
The suspension retains that
traditional taut BMW ride,
expertly smoothing out rough
surfaces and minimising
noise while still delivering the
exceptional road holding you’d
expect from a modern M performance
great.
For me, the M5 remains
the benchmark in its class –
its balance, poise and agility
on twisty, undulating terrain
deliver a feel-good factor that’s
off the scale.
Much of the credit goes to
the superbly balanced chassis
and finely tuned adaptive
suspension. BMW’s latest
xDrive AWD system also plays
its part, multitasking brilliantly
to provide immense traction
and grip while taming the
monumental power and torque.
The result – an unforgettable
driving experience.
HOME CHRISTCHURCH LIMITED,LICENSED REA 2008

5 LAPWING LANE | MT PLEASANT
DEADLINE: 5PM, 15 DECEMBER 2025
(UNLESS SOLD PRIOR)
“Once in a lifetime opportunity” is a
phrase often overused, yet it feels
entirely fitting for 5 Lapwing Lane – a
HOME with no true comparison. Set
across an exclusive & private 7,871sqm
on the lower slopes of Mount Pleasant,
this property commands some of the
most breathtaking views Christchurch has
to offer.
Facing west, the HOME enjoys
exceptional sun and, unusually for a hill
property, almost all of it is usable flat
area. Inside the execution is flawless.
Award-winning designer Davinia Sutton
has shaped interiors of remarkable
sophistication, where every detail has
been considered and crafted to the
highest standard. The layout offers four
bedrooms, two bathrooms, three living
spaces, a separate toilet, and a
dedicated laundry, creating a sense of
ease and flexibility throughout.
Built in 2004, this HOME showcases
quality craftsmanship with its solid
Douglas Fir construction, offering both
durability and timeless warmth.
Thoughtful detailing continues inside,
where Lawson Cypress features beneath
the staircase add a beautiful natural
touch and hint at the care that went into
every aspect of the build.
Outdoors, a series of sun-soaked,
sheltered spaces invite you to relax,
entertain, or simply take in the
panorama. The over-height triple
garage, combined with abundant offstreet
parking suitable for a boat,
trailer, or caravan, is almost unheard
of in Christchurch, let alone on the
hill. Complementing the setting is an
expansive vegetable garden, numerous
fruit trees, and generous grounds that
make this property feel like a
generational HOME — one you will
seldom want, or need, to leave.
Adding further versatility is the fully
consented, self contained apartment
above the garage. Complete with its
own bathroom, living area, kitchenette,
and private access.
A SPRING IN THE MARKET -
COASTAL SUBURBS ON THE RISE
FROM OUR
CLIENTS
“We cannot speak highly enough of the
exceptional service we received from
Eddie Spry and the HOME team. From
the very beginning, he displayed
professionalism, honesty, and genuine
care—qualities that are unfortunately rare
in the industry and have truly restored
our faith in real estate agents.
Eddie went above and beyond at every stage
of the process, keeping us fully informed,
guiding us with his expert advice, and always
acting with integrity. His communication was
clear and prompt, His knowledge was
impressive, and his commitment to achieving
the best outcome for us never wavered he
got us a great price beyond what we could
have expected.
People are trading the hustle and bustle of city life for the
relaxed coastal outlook - and why would you blame them? As
locals, we understand the lifestyle the bays offer, not just in
enjoyment but also in the long-term value of the HOMES.
With recent Reserve Bank changes, the pressure on the wallet
is easing. Banks are entering a price war to secure new
customers, offering substantial cashbacks as incentives. These
shifts are helping us see , and achieve, peak 2021 prices,
with a strong outlook for further uplift in Christchurch.
Te Kaha Stadium, set to open in 2026, will bring
unprecedented attention to Christchurch. Offering the full
package, and as the only city in New Zealand blending
heritage charm with modern characteristics, it’s an easy
decision to call Christchurch HOME - especially as the most
affordable CBD in the country.
We understand that people move for many reasons - some
chasing new opportunities, others making more serious life
changes. To help you get to where you want to go, we offer
one of the sharpest commission rates in the city, along with a
complimentary auctioneer fee. The value we bring through
transparency, expertise, and skilled negotiation is something
that cannot be underestimated.
What could have been a stressful experience
was made smooth, positive, and even
enjoyable thanks to his hard work and
dedication. We felt supported, respected,
and confident throughout.
We are incredibly grateful to Eddie and
would recommend him to anyone looking for
an agent who genuinely delivers on their
promises!!!! Absolutely outstanding!!!!!”
“Kieren was nothing but professional his
communication was above and beyond, as the
buyer he was honest with us went out of his
way to help us & even tho his job is to work
for the seller it never felt this way as he went
out of his way to also help us.
I look forward to working with Kieren and
the HOME team again sometime & highly
recommend him whether buying or selling.”
