ENVIRONMENTAL
OUR GREEN POLICIES
For a few weeks of the year, the Seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare, which is host to the Weston
Beach Race, is transformed into one of the largest off-road motorsport events in the United Kingdom,
attracting up to 2,000 Competitors. The town of Weston-super-Mare can double in size when the
Weston Beach Race is held. We ask all Competitors to work with us in ensuring the future of this
natural race circuit.
NATURAL ENGLAND
Weston-super-Mare Beach and its surrounding habitat is protected by Natural England. RHL work
closely with Natural England and the Environment agency in both its licensing to host the event on
their natural asset and sustaining and protecting its future, both for the residents and visitors of
Weston and also to safeguard this natural race circuit RHL and its Competitors have the opportunity
to race on.
SAND MOVEMENT & REGENERATION
Part of RHL’s work with North Somerset Council is restoring the sand levels of the Beach at Westonsuper-Mare,
which gets eroded away during the year.
RHL work closely with North Somerset Council, with re distribution of the sand along the Bay, whilst
ensuring not only during the build of the race circuit, but during and on breakdown the impact on
the balance of the sediment across the bay, has a non-significant impact on the natural environment
of the race circuit.
The Weston Beach Race is part of the Weston Bay Beach and Dune Management Plan and we are
proud to be able to work with the local Council in this very important environmental and
maintenance plan, of the historic beach and surrounding areas.
The scale of the event is such that it is easy to forget, for the rest of the year, the beach and its lawns
and promenade are home to holiday makers, joggers, dog walkers, donkey rides and all the activities
naturally enjoyed within a seaside town.
Weston-super-Mare Beach and its surrounding habitat is protected by Natural England.
WASTE GENERATED AT THE EVENT
What we achieved in 2023
‣ Recycling Waste 75% Recycled
‣ Recycling Waste 25% Diverted From Landfill
‣ General Waste 100% Diverted from Landfill
‣ Unused Food This is given to local charities
RHL will always aim to improve on Waste and its end destination.
ENVIRONMENTAL MATS
202602 WESTON BEACH RACE REGULATIONS 2026 Page 50 of 58
2026
The Environmental Mat is a compulsory piece of equipment that must be used by Competitors. This
is to protect the Beach and waterways and all its living organisms from being contaminated, which
could jeopardise the future of the event.
The Environmental mat must be composed of an absorbent upper part and an impermeable lower
part. It is compulsory to use and Environmental mat (or other effective and approved system) to
prevent sand and water contamination within the Pits/Work Area.
TEAR OFFS
These are strictly prohibited. Due to the composition of Tear Offs, these can remain in the Environment
for decades and once they enter the waterways become a danger to all the species that live within.
CABLE TIES
The use of Cable Ties whilst not prohibited at present, we would ask Competitors to be mindful of their
use, ensuring any used to secure easy ups, awnings etc., once cut are picked up and taken home in
their own rubbish. Think could you use an alternative, like re-useable bungee straps.
Cable ties can cause untold damage to the natural sea life, if they enter the waterways.
IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY
For the Weston Beach Race to be sustainable, we all have a duty to make sure the Beach, its lawns and
promenade on which it is built, is looked after. With between 50,000 – 80,000 people visiting and
working across this temporary event site, reducing and controlling the impact the Weston Beach Race
has on its environment is a huge task.
This is a task we embrace, but we cannot do it without the help of all those involved within the event,
from the person who builds the track to the Spectator that comes to the event.
RHL has invested heavily in sustainability with the training and accreditation of key officials to FIM
Environmental Officers, enabling them to teach, train and make aware RHL and its team of its
Environmental and Sustainability responsibilities and that of the Competitor.
SUSTAINABILITY - EDUCATION
RHL work closely with local schools and colleges in bringing them to the Beach Race and working with
them on projects and career paths.

PROTECTED DUNES
The Sand Dunes located at the Southern end of the Beach by Royal Sands are a Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI) and are protected by Natural England. They play an important role in protecting parts
of the town from flooding by acting as a natural barrier against coastal flooding and rising sea levels
and storms.
Entering on to the Dunes along the side of the Racetrack, will be interpreted as intentionally and/or
recklessly damaging the special features of the SSSI area, including its flora, fauna and
geological/physiographical features. Such act is classified as criminal and can result in prosecution,
unlimited fines or even prison time, to the person and or persons who so breach the restricted area
boundary lines clearly signposted.
Unauthorised entry into this area also jeopardises the future of the Weston Beach Race. Please work
with us to protect these Dunes, preserve our beach, and help ensure the future of the Beach Race.

ENVIRONMENTAL – LITTLE THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
TOILETS PROVIDED
Urinating outside of these facilities, can result in contamination of the local water supply, killing of
local wildlife and seriously compromises the future of the event.
WASTE UNITS AND LITTER
It is not okay to drop litter on the ground. Help us by placing your waste into the correct recycling
bins.
Remember if you drop something on the beach, it can be washed away into the sea, contaminating
our waters and natural habitats and the wildlife within.
RHL employ a dedicated team who work throughout the event, hand picking litter and depositing in
the recycling units.
CAMPING VILLAGES
Ensure you put all your rubbish in the waste units provided.
Chemical waste to be deposited in the relevant chemical waste unit.
Contaminated Waste – Tyres/Filters/Plastic gloves – Please ensure you take these home.
REUSEABLE AND BIO DEGRADEABLE CUPS
Bring your own reuseable cup to use if buying coffee/tea, from our vendors. They will be more than
happy to use your cup.
All our Caterers are encouraged to use bio-degradable/reuseable containers to serve food and drink.
ONLY USE WHAT YOU NEED
Do you need to use four napkins, when one with suffice. Think waste, think smart.
Our Caterers are asked to use pump dispensers rather than single use condiment sachets.
SINGLE USE PLASTIC
Bring your own bag. RHL distribute reuseable bags to the Competitors, we ourselves use these, they
are great and last for years.
We ask our Caterers to replace plastic cutlery with wooden cutlery.
BIODEGRADEABLE WIPES
Think do you need to use wipes, even Biodegradable wipes, which quickly breakdown into micro
plastics, are problematic environmental pollutants.

WATER
There are two standpipes located on site, which have been treated in line with Water Regulations and
Guidelines. They are for cooking purposes and cleaning only.
There is no facility on the beach to wash bikes.
Standpipes have a chemical security seal on them, do not tamper with these, they will render them
useless and incur a minimum fine of £2,500 by Bristol Water as it will be deemed as contamination of
the British Waterways.
RHL have Water Stations in all their working areas and promote the use of Reuseable cups within
their areas by their Team.
SOUND
This is a natural pollutant and RHL have strict shut down times and working times, to ensure we create
as little disruption as possible to the local residents.
RHL ensure they only work within designated hours and create a detailed vehicle and plant movement
and utilisation plan, to work with the local Council and residents in keeping sound pollution to a
minimum.
Generators are sound tested and RHL ensure they hire in Low Sound Generators with dBA readings of
between 52 to 72dBA, depending on consumption.
ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
This is a natural pollutant and RHL ensure the placement of security lighting creates as less impact as
possible on the local area, whilst still maintaining a secure environment for the event site.
