Q&A

Kristian Schena, Aka Santa

Claus (And A Pirate, Too)

It’s the Santa Claus Issue, so Jack Wright chatted with Kristian

Schena, who talks about life in the red-and-white costume.

Kristian, when did you first dress up as Santa?

When I worked at the Coast Guard base daycare

center. They needed a Santa for the kids, and I did

it with a big fake beard. I was in college, so that

would’ve been around 1998 or 1999.

Were you already Santa-shaped back then?

Beard, belly? Not at all. No beard, no big belly. I

wore one of those pillow setups that goes around

your body to give you the right silhouette.

What were you studying in college? Psychology.

I went to Stockton College.

When did you grow your own beard?

After college, around 2000. I realized I liked the

shape of my head better with a beard. And now it

works for both Santa and my pirate character.

Where did you grow up? My dad was Coast

Guard, so we moved around the country a few

times. But we’ve been in Cape May County since I

was in second grade. I went to Cape May Elementary.

My dad did a bunch of jobs to keep us from

moving again, and he retired here.

Before Santa became your seasonal life, what

kinds of jobs did you do? My big summer job

through high school and college was Morrow’s

Nut House on Cape May boardwalk. After college,

I started working for the Arc of Cape May County.

I’m still there — I manage the thrift shop in Rio

Grande.

Where have you appeared as Santa over the

years? Lots of places. People hire me for home

parties, I’ve worked with restaurants like MudHen,

and I’ve been Santa for the Cape May County Zoo’s

tree-lighting as long as they’ve had it. I’ve never

done the mall Santa thing — by the time I was really

into it, malls were kind of dying anyway.

How many Santa outfits do you have? Right

now, three. I started with a classic Coca-Cola style,

but I don’t wear it much anymore. Then I found a

Victorian-looking suit — gold trim, detailed coat

— and people love that one. I still wear it, even for

Halloween sometimes. During COVID, when those

stimulus checks came through, I invested in a custom-made

suit. That’s the one I wear most now. It’s

comfortable, and it has options — I can take the coat

off and still look like Santa.

Your wife Sandy sometimes plays Mrs Claus

with you, right? She does, when she can. When

we first got together she was Mrs Claus for the zoo

and a few other gigs. MudHen specifically wanted

a Santa and Mrs Claus, so we do their hospitality

night together. These days that’s usually the only

event she joins me for, because she has her own job

at Bath Time and it’s hard to take off.

Do you ever worry about losing a lot of weight

and not looking like Santa? Not really. Santa

doesn’t have to be huge. If I lost weight I’d still be

Santa; the suit does a lot. Modern Santa portrayals

are sometimes slimmer anyway. I know a Santa

who works Sesame Place — he’s a skinny guy, and

he’s brilliant. I also keep my beard trimmed because

I don’t think Santa needs to look like a Yeti. Mrs

Claus wouldn’t let me in the cabin if I did.

You mentioned you and Sandy “stick to

your own lore.” What do you mean by that?

There are so many versions of Santa, and we choose

one and live inside it. In our story, Santa and Mrs

Claus are ancient beings who’ve been doing

this for a very long time. North Pole, elves,

workshop — all the classic parts are there, but

we have our own consistent backstory about

how it all works. The more consistent you are,

the more believable it feels to kids. Coca-Cola

didn’t invent Santa — they didn’t invent me.

They just pushed one image that stuck.

How do you make your beard and hair

white each season? I used to use white spray

paint from Party City, and it was awful —

messy, smelly, and rough on your skin. I had

to use Vaseline to get it off my face afterward.

Sandy figured out a better solution: a cream

called Afrocare. You brush it into your beard,

and it coats everything white without the

smell. It comes off with a shower, and it’s way

kinder on your lungs.

Do you wear makeup for rosy cheeks or

anything like that? No. The suit is hot enough

that your cheeks get rosy on their own.

When does your Santa season start?

Mid-November. My unofficial kickoff is

a convention in Philadelphia called PAX

Unplugged — a board-game convention. I go

for a friend who makes a game and actually

put my pirate character into it. I show up as

Captain Santa, a pirate-captain mashup.

So Santa and pirate work together in

your world? Completely. Captain Santa is

part of the fun. In my lore, sometimes Santa

and the elves take a break from the workshop

routine and decide to do something wild —

like become pirates for a while. I lean into

that. I also perform as Captain Kristian in

the summer — sword-fighting shows, pirateand-princess

events at the zoo, that kind of

thing. It’s all one big character ecosystem.

What kinds of Santa gigs do you do

besides public events? A lot of home visits,

phone calls and FaceTimes. People hire me

for parties where I come in, talk to the kids,

and hand out gifts. I’ve done Christmas Eve

visits, too, especially for friends — if everyone

is in the same area, you can hit a few houses

in one night.

Do kids still try to catch you out with

trick questions? All the time. They’ll ask my

name, or their own name to test whether I’m

real. Parents often help by whispering names

to me, but sometimes I just tell the kid, “I

don’t know everyone’s name. Do you remember

every person you’ve ever met?” And they

get it. That’s why Santa has lists and elves.

What do you say when a kid asks if you’re

the real Santa? I usually tell them it’s up to

them to believe. Santa is all about belief. I

might wink, and then I do a little magic trick

where my hand glows and I “take” their wish

from their head and send it to the North Pole.

It’s an old light-transfer trick, but kids love it. I

even have Mrs Claus rigged so she can “hold”

wishes, too, and tuck them away safely.

Top Christmas books and movies? I’ve

read The Night Before Christmas so many times I

know most of it by heart; Sandy knows all of it.

I’m also partial to How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

As for movies, I love the one from the ’80s

with John Lithgow as the evil toy maker. And

I love Violent Night with David Harbour — it’s

Santa in an action-hero role and it has a surprisingly

good Santa myth behind it.

What would be your last meal on earth?

I’m going classic comfort food. Give me a

big plate of old-school chicken parm with a

mountain of pasta — and a side of garlic bread

that’s basically illegal. And if we’re doing dessert,

too, I’m finishing with a really good slice

of cheesecake. If that’s the last meal, I want it

to feel like home.

us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee

and contemplate the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

I am 16 and worked for the first time last

summer. I worked with a landscaping company.

I really liked it and got a lot of tips,

which really surprised me. I still have the

money I earned and would like to spend some

of it on Christmas presents for my family.

I have an older sister and brother, plus my

parents. I would also like to get something

for my grandparents, but they seem to have

everything. I know they love the beach. It

sounds funny, but I’ve never bought anything

for anyone before and could use your

help. One more thing, I would like to buy

local, if possible. — New Consumer

Dear New

Welcome to the world of retail. How

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to life’s perplexing questions

thoughtful you are. You need look no further

than the Cape Island, Washington Street

Mall and Washington Commons. There’s a

good array of stores on the Mall and at the

Commons. Over in West Cape May, you

might find something very cool at Flying

Fish Studios for your siblings. For stocking

stuffers, pop into Just For Laughs on the

Mall. You’re bound to find something elegant

at Splash or Madame’s Port. Your parents

might like a gift certificate from Tisha’s

or Fin’s. As to your grandparents – why not

get them beach tags?

Dear Answer Lady

I’m a senior in high school and started

dating in September. She spent Thanksgiving

at her grandparents’ house in Pennsylvania.

I’d like to have her come to Christmas

dinner but sometimes the holidays at my

house are more like The War of the Roses.

My Mimi sometimes drinks too many

glasses of wine and starts in on my mom.

One year, my mother threw the bowl of

stuffing across the table and nearly smacked

her in the head. That was while my dad was

saying grace. Other times, everything is

fine. If I don’t invite her, it will look bad but

if I do and it’s war she may never talk to me

again. What should I do? — Stressed

Dear Stressed

Ahh there’s nothing like family at the

holidays. Take her on a MAC holiday trolley

tour and tell her the truth. Let her decide.

Remember, she’s dating you, not your Mimi.

It’s hard to believe that another glorious

autumn migration is drawing to a close.

The songbird migration that began back

in August with those first Yellow Warblers

filtering south has run its course. Only the

hordes of Yellow-rumped Warblers remain

and many of these hardy birds will remain

with us all winter. In winter, the hardy Yellow-rumped

is able to augment its diet with

seeds, including poison ivy and bayberry.

These boreal forest breeders are found

from Newfoundland to Alaska and winter

across the southern US, north even to coastal

New England. Much of the bird’s hardiness

can be traced to versatility. Yellow-rumps

can do it all — glean insect larvae from tree

trunks, forage amid the leaf litter on the forest

floor, even snap insects out of thin air.

Pioneering ornithologist Alexander Wilson,

unaware that what he had stumbled upon in

the New World was a whole new bird family,

initially called them “flycatchers”.

Yellow-rumps are also adept at scooping

up insects floating on the surface of ponds.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

If you feed birds and offer suet, don’t be surprised

to see a Yellow-rump clinging to the

wire cage. The warbler family is, as the name

suggests, celebrated for their songs which, of

course, are not being uttered right now.

In winter, most adult warblers are not as

brightly attired as breeding birds. But in winter,

Yellow-rumps still flash their tell-tale yellow

rumps. Overall brownish, flushed birds

show three points of light as they fly directly

away — one bright rump and white corners

on the tail. Flushed birds will also usually

utter their distinctive flat chep note. Even in

winter, the birds gather in small flocks and in

woodlands also join mixed species flocks, led

by chickadees.

The vegetated dunes of the South Cape

May Meadows are a particularly good location

to find Yellow-rumps. Come April, adults

will be graying up and showing touches of

yellow on the flanks and crown. For those

whose field guides assigns the bird to the

genus “Dendroica”, a decade ago this was correct.

But the genus Dendroica was tabled by

the A.O.S in favor of “Septophaga,” Greek for

“moth-eater.” Why? I don’t know. I don’t sit

on the Ornithological Society’s Classification

Committee. But Dendroica, which is Greek

for “tree dwelling,” seems to me just as apt.

If a rose is a rose is a rose, a warbler by any

other name sings just as beautifully. But until

April, when the birds are moved to sing, a chep

is all you’ll get.

If you love Cape May, you already have

a complex relationship with the winter

beach. It’s beautiful, except when it’s

brutal. It’s temperate, unless the wind

picks up. The skies are gray, except when

they are a brilliant blue. Small wonder that

some of my favorite beach photographs are

winter shots.

Taking photos on the winter beach

requires a bit of preparation. Of course, if

you’re an experienced photographer, you

don’t need advice from someone with a sixyear

old iPhone. When I asked a pro for tips

on winter beach portraits, she basically told

me to find an indoor site, because winter

can be uncomfortable for the models, the

photographer and the lenses. But, winter

does offer some advantages.

The sun rises later and sets earlier, so

you may be better able to corral the crew

for the “golden hour.” Even if you can’t,

the softer light of the winter sun should

be pretty all day, and a cloudy day creates

interesting shadows.

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there and enjoying this island

With fewer people around, you’ll have

large sections of the beach to yourself, so

you can take your time. Sit still to capture

a shore bird, or take your time posing your

models to get the fence, the lighthouse and

eye contact.

If you’re photographing kids, expect

chaos. Don’t put pressure on the models.

Instead, tell the well-fed and rested little

darlings that you’re taking a few pictures

before the fun begins, and wrap them in lots

of cozy gear. Unfamiliar gear works best

— you should get some adorable seasonal

shots as they are unwinding the scarves

and pulling off the mittens and earmuffs. If

you’re lucky, a small one will turn her little

chin up to a big one for help. Keep shooting

as you let them run around, flying a kite or

tossing a frisbee. Then, put the camera/

phone away because someone is about to get

wet. Oh, they’re just going to put their toes

in and their shoes are safely up on the promenade?

Ha! I don’t know how it happens, but

it does, and there will likely be tears, just as

the sun dips and the wind picks up. Bring a

full change of clothes and a blanket. Later,

marvel at how many cute shots you got.

Of course, professional photographers

can provide the best results, and Cape May

has several. M.P. Myers (mpmyersphotography.com)

specializes in portraits of children,

including your fur babies. Exit Zero’s

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three cat-tastic felines from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

JOEY is an 11-year-old, 18-pound gentle

giant who found himself at the shelter after

his owner moved away and left him behind.

He’s scared and confused after losing the

only home he has ever known. He has always

lived indoors and has never been around

other cats, dogs, or children, so a quiet, adultonly

home would be best for him.

JASPER is an 8-month-old boy who was rescued

with his siblings after being born to a

feral mother on the beach. After months in

a loving foster home, he’s now vaccinated,

neutered, house-trained, and ready for his

forever family. Jasper will happily curl up

beside you for hours. He’s an affectionate boy

and gets along well with other cats.

FOGHORN came to the shelter with a fractured

elbow — an injury his previous owners

believed came from a run-in with a rooster.

He uses his leg to play, and though walking

and running make him “skate” a bit on

that front leg, it doesn’t slow him down one

bit. He is 8 months old and needs to remain

inside. Foghorn is good with other cats.

DUKE was surrendered when his owners

realized they did not have the proper experience

to train a German Shepherd. This breed

requires patient introductions with several

meets before they feel truly comfortable.

Once he trusts you, he becomes sweet, affectionate,

and happily leans in for pets and

play. Duke’s first birthday is December 17!

FINN is a large, lovable boy who came to the

shelter when his owner could no longer keep

him. He is shy at first but quickly becomes

an affectionate companion. He loves fetch,

enjoys back scratches and is a big fan of car

rides. Finn did well with older children in his

previous home and would be happiest with

a family that lets him settle at his own pace.

THOR is a goofy, happy year-and-a-half-old

boy who came to the shelter when his owner

could no longer care for him. He loves attention

and will “talk” to anyone walking past

his kennel. His leash skills are great and he

brings the same joyful enthusiasm to his

walks as he does to playtime. He previously

lived with children but does not like cats.

This week, two takes on Wicked: For Good,

the box office sensation and likely Oscar

nominee. According to Rotten Tomatoes,

audiences are loving it, while critic

response is good, but less enthusiastic.

First from Will: The wait is finally over!

It has been a year since Elphaba, The Wicked

Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo) flew away on

her broomstick from “the authorities.” Now it is

time for the rest of the story in Wicked: For Good.

Your big questions about the Wizard of Oz,

which you’ve probably had since childhood, are

answered. How does Glinda the Good (Ariana

Grande) get her bubble? How does the Wicked

Witch of the East get crushed by a farmhouse?

What are the back stories of the Cowardly Lion,

Tin Man and Scarecrow?

How far are you willing to go when all you

stand for is challenged or mocked? Elphaba

faced this in the first installment when she

stood up for the animals who were treated

brutally. No amount of pressure or rejection

stopped her from giving up. Glinda the Good

was the friend who always supported her.

The Movie Column

By guest columnists Will Rodebaugh, III and Julia Rose

It seems like we can find that person in our

lives who always sticks by us. There is support

in this world which makes it a little easier to

follow our dreams and stand up for what we

believe. An important message from an enjoyable

film!

Now from Julia: Wicked: For Good was

decent, but it could’ve been better. The director

made some questionable choices when it came

to pacing and storytelling. Certain transitions

and plot points felt almost soap-opera-esque,

while others felt too small for how monumental

they were supposed to be.

Some moments hit home — for example,

the Tin Man leading the March of the Witch

Hunters, and Glinda and Elphaba saying goodbye.

But there were many moments that felt

brushed over.

I was left wondering if we needed Wicked to

be two movies. It seems like they threw in songs

that were unnecessary, and the long anticipation

for the sequel almost makes it impossible

to meet viewer expectations.

Still, the cast was outstanding. You cannot

go wrong with Erivo and Grande — they were

magnetic on screen. You really resonate with

both of their characters, and what they both had

to lose was heartbreaking. It all ties together

nicely. Overall, I’m disappointed by some of

the choices but happy the story was told today,

especially with these actors.

What’s your reaction to this blockbuster

movie? We want to hear from you. Email
