Evans Pass Rd into Sumner
is a race track for some,
particularly for cyclists and
motorcyclists.
The 2km stretch of winding
road has seen its fair share of
crashes; four serious and 12
minor so far this year.
So three Sumner residents,
Jason Irvine, Paul Bimler and
Ian Skelton, are trying to do
something about it.
Irvine has been videoing
cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers
descending Evans Pass,
many of which he says are
going too fast.
The speed limit is 50km/h but
Irvine estimates cyclists reach
more than 80km/h and motorcyclists,
more than 150km/h.
He, Bimler and Skelton have
taken their concerns to the
Waihoro-Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board.
Irvine has also been to the
police, but got nowhere.
“The police sort of laughed
about the idea of giving speeding
tickets to cyclists, but
they’re all part of the mix,” he
said.
“There’s no real governance
on the road and the behaviours
are now becoming normalised

Irvine said the issue had
worsened over the past 18
months.
The trio are concerned about
safety where Evans Pass Rd
connects to Wakefield Ave, near
Ko Taku Reo – Deaf Education.
Sumner School is also close by.
Irvine asked the community
board to look at a speed camera
at the bottom of the hill to deter
people from going too fast. The
community board referred
the issue to city council staff to
investigate.
Irvine said police had told
him they could not take action
against the people he captures
on video on his phone.

Celebrity cricket clash to launch
pavilion fundraising campaign

A fundraising campaign to
rebuild the Sumner Sports
Pavilion will start in February,
headlined by a star studded
rugby vs cricket T20 match.
The cross-code game will be
held at St Leonards Park on
February 5, with the first ball
bowled at 3pm.
All Blacks head coach and
Sumner identity Scott Robertson
will lead the celebrity line-up,
which includes
Canterbury icon
Robbie Deans,
Magicians pace
bowler Gabby
Sullivan and
former Black
Fern Helen
Mahon-Stroud.
Former White

the event.
“It's a great way to celebrate
our community as well as have
a bit of fun and raise some
cash,” said campaign lead Amy
Carter.
Carter said more former
athletes would be announced as
the game draws nearer.

renew its lease at St Leonards
Park and to remove the existing
pavilion to make way for a new
one.
Since then, a project team
has been working towards
launching the campaign,
progressing the design process
and securing resource consent,
which was granted in August.
The demolition of the current
pavilion and construction of
a new one is estimated to cost
about $3 million.
Carter said the group had
already invested about $500,000
into the project and was pursuing
grants, crowdfunding and events
as fundraising opportunities.
Demolition work would ideally
start immediately after the 2026
rugby season, she said, but would
depend on fundraising progress.
Carter said upgrading the pavilion,
home to Sumner rugby and
cricket clubs, was long overdue
and had been needed since before
the earthquakes.
“It’s just no longer fit for purpose
and it’s far from meeting
seismic strengthening requirements
as well,” she said.
The building was also unable
to accommodate for either
club’s growing female player
base.
The new pavilion will include
changing rooms for women,
match officials and people
with disabilities, a commercial
kitchen and running hot water.
The building’s conceptual
design has been completed,
with work now under way on
detailed plans ahead of a building
consent application.
Project contractor Jim the
Builder has agreed to take an
open-book approach, allowing
services and materials from the
community to be used to help
keep costs down.
The new pavilion is intended
to be a multi-use facility, with
space for local sports clubs and
community groups that do not
have a permanent home.
“We want the facility to be
utilised as much as possible,”
Carter said.

Sumner Community Residents’
Association to allow the
building to be used as an
emergency evacuation hub.

Diamond Harbour car fire
A motorist managed to escape
their car before it was engulfed
by fire on Sunday. The vehicle
crashed on Charteris Bay Rd
about 2.45pm. Diamond Harbour
Volunteer fire chief Frank Watson
said a concrete culvert ruptured
the petrol tank, causing the car
to catch fire. He said the driver
escaped the vehicle after seeing
smoke coming from the engine,
with the car engulfed in flames
shortly after. A passing motorist
called out the Diamond Harbour
brigade, which was assisted by
the Governors Bay brigade. It took
about 45 minutes to extinguish
the fire. The driver was uninjured.
McLellan to run for
Banks Peninsula seat
Labour list MP Tracey McLellan
will be the party’s candidate for
the Banks Peninsula electorate
at next year’s general election.
McLellan entered Parliament
in 2020, winning the electorate
over National’s Catherine Chu.
She then lost the seat in 2023
to National’s Vanessa Weenink,
who will be the incumbent at next
year’s election.

Restoring history: Decades-long

For 26 years, Dag Guest
has poured time, skill and
determination into restoring
one of the rarest warbirds in
existence – a World War 2 de
Havilland Mosquito 98.
“It’s a very historically significant
aircraft,” he said.
More than 7700 Mosquitos
were built from 1940-1950,
serving in multiple roles from
fighters to bombers. Only about
30 are left worldwide and just
five are still capable of flying.
Guest is one of about 30
volunteers at the Ferrymead
Aeronautical Society, a group
dedicated to preserving New
Zealand’s aviation history at
Ferrymead Heritage Park.
He leads a team of four volunteers
to restore Mosquito
HR339, the last surviving
aircraft operated by No 487
Squadron RNZAF and the only
surviving Mosquito flown by an
RNZAF squadron during WW2.
The de Havilland Mk VI Mosquito
flew 31 combat operations
between December 1944 and
May 1945.
“It saw action over Germany,
and it was severely damaged by
flak while attacking a train during
operation Clarion, forcing it
to belly-land at an emergency
airfield,” said Guest.
After extensive repairs,
HR339 returned to No 487
Squadron in April 1945, continuing
its service.

In 1948, it was flown to
RNZAF Ohakea near Palmerston
North and later written off after
it was involved in a taxiing accident
at RNZAF Wigram.
It was sold to a Banks Peninsula
farmer in 1952, who cut it
into pieces small enough to fit
on his small truck and transported
it back to his farm at
Pigeon Bay.
The remains were spotted
by members of the Aviation
Historical Society in 1972 and
retrieved by Ferrymead Aeronautical
Society volunteers.
Guest is a former aircraft
engineer and a furniture maker.
Yet advice from around the
world was there was no way the
master craftsman could repair
that much damage – and not to
bother trying.
“Well, that was like a red rag
to a bull to me. I like a challenge,”
said Guest.
The restoration project combines
the fuselage of another
Mosquito, NZ2328, with the
wings of HR339 to make a single
aircraft to static display
standard.
“It’s taken me 26 years to
repair the fuselage. It was very
badly damaged, particularly
around the starboard cockpit
area,” said Guest.
However, after more than a
quarter of a century, the project
doesn’t look like being completed
anytime soon.
“The structural repairs are
extremely complicated. As far
as we know, there’s only one
other person in the world who's
tackled wings as badly damaged
as ours.”
But that doesn’t faze the energetic
73-year-old.
Born in Bradford, England,
Guest became known as ‘Dag’
after enlisting with the Royal
Naval Reserve Air Branch at age
17.
“I walked into a Royal Navy
mess with the initials D.A.G on
my kitbag. Someone just said
you must be Dag, and the name
stuck.”
It was used so much he had it
changed to his legal name.
Guest went on to train as an
aircraft engineer with the Royal
Navy. He left the navy in 1978
after for 10 years.
“After I left the navy, I worked
for an American company in
the Middle East. Unfortunately
I got caught up in the January
1979 Iranian Revolution and
was trapped there for a while.”

The Iranian Revolution saw
the US-backed shah overthrown
and an Islamic Republic
established, led by Ayatollah
Khomeini, who had returned
from exile.
Guest said after he was evacuated
to America, he retrained
and got further qualifications
and a job working on Bell
helicopters.
In December 1979, he came to
New Zealand on holiday.
“I was broke and needed to
work, so I got a six-month work
permit and got a job as an aircraft
maintenance engineer at
Christchurch Airport.”
When his work permit ended,
he applied for permanent
residency. Two years later, he
married a New Zealander.
When asked how his wife
Carol feels about the amount of
time he devotes to his long-term
labour of love, Guest said she
was very supportive.
“She puts up with it, and
treats it as a good reason to
send me out of the house.”
In 1984, Guest changed
careers and opened a handmade
furniture business at
Ferrymead Heritage Park.
He joined the aeronautical
society six years later.
“I had my furniture business
in the park, but when I moved
it out I joined the aeronautical
society so I could still have
access to Ferrymead.”
The park is home to a
significant collection of 10 fixed

wing aircraft, ranging from a
Vickers Viscount airliner with a
94ft wingspan, to a de Havilland
Vampire jet fighter and a
Lockheed Hudson light bomber.
The aircraft represent New
Zealand’s civil and military
history of aviation from WW2
to the present day. The park
also boasts one of the largest
collections of helicopters in
New Zealand, with seven
complete or near-complete
aircraft.
The society welcomed the
former aircraft engineer turned
woodworker with open arms.
Guest said it “gently nudged me
towards the Mosquito”.
It was an ideal fit, as the WW2
de Havilland Mosquito was
famously constructed primarily
from wood, earning it the
wartime nickname “Wooden
Wonder”.
It was constructed of plywood
and balsa wood, along with
spruce for spars and ash for
framing, which minimised
the use of metal which was a
scarce commodity in wartime
Britain.
Guest said they could easily
have sped up the restoration
process by installing metal
plates to repair the aircraft,
“but that just wouldn’t look
right.”
He still runs his Halswellbased
hand-made furniture
business, but after semi-retiring
earlier this year has been able
to spend a lot more time on the
Mosquito’s restoration.
“With the progress we're
making now, I would hope that
the wing would be together in
five years, but it may be more.”
He said if all goes to plan,
the Mosquito may be ready for
public display in about 10 years.
“Provided I don’t go
doolally, I’d like to keep
going until it’s finished
. . . to get the airplane
together and on display.”

get a new building.”
He said a bigger display space
would be needed when the
wings are reunited with the
Mosquito’s fuselage.
“We’d like to be able to raise
the money to house the Mosquito,
along with the vampire
and Lockheed Hudson – but
that’s just a pipe dream at the
moment.”
He said the uncertain future
of Ferrymead Heritage Park
was also a worry for the society.
However, he remains unfazed
by the scale of the rebuild.
“Provided I don’t go doolally,
I’d like to keep going until it's
finished. What we want to do is
get the airplane together, and
on display.”

Late member’s bequest paves the way
for tennis club’s long-awaited rebuild

An inheritance from a late
Redcliffs Tennis Club member
is set to transform its ageing
clubrooms.
Rhondda Moffitt was a dedicated
member, player and
volunteer of the club for about
20 years before her death in
2013. After she died, her husband
Russell continued her
involvement with the club until
his death in 2023.
Before his passing, Russell was
in the process of bequeathing
a monetary gift on Rhondda’s
behalf to fund the redevelopment
of the club pavilion.
At his request, Rhondda’s legacy
will be recognised with the
new building to be named the
Rhondda Moffitt Pavilion.
The club currently has two
ageing buildings on site. The
original pavilion was built
around 1924, while an additional
hall – a former military
building – was moved onto the
site a few years later.
Club president Matt Love-
Smith said the buildings had
been outdated and unfit for
purpose for many years, but a
rebuild was never considered
possible until the bequest.
“They’re just old. If you had to
reconsent them now, they probably
wouldn’t meet all the modern
regulations,” he said.
The club has spent the past
12-18 months working through

the design process, has secured
resource consent and signed a
construction contract with Laing
last week.
Both existing buildings will be
demolished and replaced with a
single, open-plan pavilion, large
enough to move junior training
indoors during bad weather.
The new facility will include
upgraded kitchen facilities, onsite
parking and Wi-Fi.

Love-Smith said it would also
be made available for use by
other community organisations.
“Groups or associations that
are like-minded and are looking
for facilities where they can
bring people together – we’re
hoping we’ll be able to support
those in the future,” he said.
The new pavilion will be constructed
off-site and transported
to the club.
Love-Smith said Laing was now
working through the detailed
design, which will be submitted
to the city council for building
consent early next year.
Off-site construction is
expected to begin mid-next year,
alongside demolition of the existing
buildings. The new pavilion is
planned to open in January 2027.
The amount of the bequest and
the estimated cost of the rebuild
could not be disclosed but Love-
Smith said the club would be
looking to raise an additional
$75,000 through donations, fundraising
and sponsorship.
“We’re very excited about the
future for the whole community.
We’re a growing club and it’s
going to allow us to expand our
ability to provide access to tennis
for all abilities and age groups,”
Love-Smith said.
Earlier this month, the club
received Tennis New Zealand’s
Community Impact Award, a
national honour recognising its
coaching programme with Te
Raekura Redcliffs School.
Over the past eight years, the
club has invested about $8000 to
provide every pupil at the school
with two fully coached tennis
lessons each year at no cost.

Meet the robot protecting the harbour from pests
Environment Canterbury’s
coastal team can now tackle
new areas of Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour for
surveying and marine pest
control, thanks to a robot from
Kiwi tech company Boxfish
Robotics and Earth Sciences NZ.
Every year, ECan undertakes
biosecurity surveillance at
four ports and harbours across
Canterbury, searching for invasive
marine species that can
damage New Zealand's marine
biodiversity.
One of the biggest threats is
Sabella spallanzanii, the Mediterranean
fanworm.
The inner harbour is a hot
spot for the fanworm, which
can damage boats and smother
native species.

Working like an underwater
drone, it streams 4K video in
real time for accurate identification,
uses AI to detect pest
species and a mechanical arm
to grip, rotate, and remove
invasive species from underwater
structures – all without
sending divers into hazardous
conditions.
“The ROV gives us a safer,
more efficient method for
marine pest control,” said ECan
coastal response and readiness
lead Emma Parr.
“Using it to access areas
unsafe for divers, allows us
to remove sabella where we
previously couldn’t. This
technology opens up new
possibilities for managing
marine pests in challenging
environments.”
ECan is working to contain
fanworm within the inner harbour
and reduce populations,
with removal efforts up to four
times a year in collaboration
with Lyttelton Port Company
and Biosecurity New Zealand.
High-risk areas include Te Ana
Marina, Cashin Quay, and Magazine
Bay marina.
A harbour-wide survey in
2023 showed less fanworm
spread outside the inner
harbour. ECan is optimistic
about minimising its
impact on the wider marine
environment.

Ferrymead comes alive for Canty anniversary
Ferrymead Heritage Park came alive
at the weekend as it celebrated the
first four European ships arriving
in Lyttelton Harbour in 1850. About
500 people came through the doors
on Saturday and Sunday, dressed
to the nines for Canterbury’s 175th
anniversary. Attendees enjoyed brass
and pipe bands, Morris dancers,
trains, trams, vintage cars and traction
engines. Said park general manager
Ian France: “It was wonderful to see
so many people enjoying the history,
atmosphere, and festive spirit.
We are incredibly grateful to our
volunteers, performers, societies and
drivers who pulled out all the stops to
bring the park to life. And of course,
thank you to everyone who attended,
supported the event, and shared in
celebrating Canterbury’s past with us.
This is your park, and weekends like
this remind us why it’s so special.”

Marine hotels offer
new insights into
harbour’s health
Deep beneath the surface of
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
tiny invertebrates are offering
vital clues about the marine
environment’s health.
Earth and marine scientist
Joyce Yager knows this better
than most. She is passionate
about studying the invertebrates
that call Lyttelton Harbour home
and sharing her findings with the
wider community.
Yager has created multiplatform
“marine hotels” made
from ceramic tiles, stainless
steel, and rope.
Suspended at different
points around the harbour,
the structures have become
popular hangout spots for a
wide variety of invertebrates.
Together with a small team of
volunteers, Yager monitors the
marine hotels by periodically
removing them from the water.
They record which
invertebrates have settled in,
providing insights into the
overall health of the harbour
and its diverse ecosystem.
Yager said she wants the
harbour to be safe for both sea
creatures and humans for many
years to come.
“We think a lot about how
we’re impacting birds and
marine mammals in Lyttelton,
but maybe not so much the
smaller organisms.
“What I hope is people start
thinking about animals they’ve
probably never heard of in the
harbour and how what we’re
doing on land impacts some of
these other marine animals,” she
said.
Marine hotel residents
have included polychaete
worms, bryozoans, sea squirts,
gastropods, bivalves, fish,
decorator crabs, and a variety
of other crustaceans.
The monitoring process is
detailed. Tiles are removed,
placed in trays with seawater,
and photographed on top and
bottom, noting the “floor” of the
hotel.
Using observation sheets,
volunteers record dominant
species, estimate coverage
percentages, and track the
presence of common organisms.
From there, data can be
processed for diversity metrics,
including what proportion
of the hotel’s population is
native, endemic, introduced or
invasive.
Data is collected over time,
including if sea creature
communities in marine hotels
change seasonally, what
happens if the water heats up

suddenly, if the same organisms
dominate at each hotel site,
and do the same organisms
dominate all year long.
Individual organisms are
photographed and uploaded
to iNaturalist, making
the observations publicly
accessible.
Occasionally, the project has
led to the discovery of species
not previously recorded in the
harbour.
Local schools are also
involved, adopting their
own marine hotels as part of
curriculum-integrated learning.
For example, Governors
Bay School pupils carried out
an inquiry into conservation
and habitats through a ki uta
ki tai (mountains-to-the-sea)
perspective.
They explored local sites such
as Living Springs, learned about
restoration projects, conducted
water quality sampling,
and monitored the coastal
foreshore.
During these activities, pupils
made connections between land
use, historical practices, and the
health of the harbour.
Schools participate in the
marine hotel programme
through the national
Enviroschools initiative,
linking hands-on science with
environmental education.

Recycling batteries to
get safer at Barry’s Bay
New fire-resistant units for disposing of
household batteries are planned for the
Barry’s Bay transfer station.
The units will be installed next year,
allowing residents to dispose of batteries
more safely.
It follows the installation of units at
Christchurch’s Parkhouse, Metro and
Styx Mill EcoDrop resource recovery
centres, and the Blenheim Rd EcoShop.
Said City council resource recovery
manager Dr Alec McNeil: “Our new
units are fitted with fire suppression
and heat sensor technology, and fireresistant
liners, making the process
a lot safer for residents, staff and our
sites.”
The upgraded stations have 24/7
monitoring, meaning staff or FENZ are
notified when a fire has started, or conditions
suggest a potential risk.
​Over the past year, there have been
31 fires across the collection service,
including 26 at EcoDrop transfer stations.
More than 15,000kg of batteries
were collected during this period.
“It’s free to dispose of most common
household batteries using these collection
units, and we really encourage
people to use them,” McNeil said.
Batteries should not be put in wheelie
bins or directly into transfer station pits.

Chocolate: Keep Dogs Away from the
Dark Side
While chocolate is a delightful treat for us, it contains
theobromine and caffeine that can be highly toxic to
pets. The darker the chocolate the higher the levels of
these substances. Keep all chocolate goodies, including
decorations and gift wrappings, out of paws’ reach to
prevent accidental ingestion.
Christmas Cake: Not Such a Merry Christmas Treat for
Pets
Raisins, commonly found in Christmas cakes, can be
harmful to dogs, leading to kidney failure.
If your festive spread includes fruitcakes, ensure they are
stored securely, and keep a watchful eye on your pet to
avoid any unwanted snacking. Fresh grapes can be equally
harmful.
Christmas Lilies: A Blooming Catastrophe for Cats
While the beauty of lilies enhances our homes during the
holidays, they are highly toxic to cats.
Ingesting any part of the plant can cause kidney failure.
If you suspect your cat has come into contact with lilies,
contact your vet promptly.
Christmas Decorations: Pretty, but Potentially Perilous

system. Corn cobs and kebab skewers are another

meals, contain compounds that can damage a
pet’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. Ensure all
leftovers are kept away from inquisitive noses to

For those enjoying home brewing, be aware that
the hops can be toxic to dogs. Ingestion can lead to
increased temperature, rapid breathing, and even death.
Ensure brewing supplies are stored securely away from
pets.
Grass Seeds: A Pesky Problem for Paws
Everyone loves getting out for summertime walks, but be
sure to check your dog’s coat for grass seeds when you get
home. Pay particular attention to paws and ears where
these pesky seed heads have a habit of penetrating.

Youth programmes to return
after fundraising success
Shoreline Youth Trust will relaunch its
programmes for term 1 and 2 in 2026
after a successful fundraising campaign.
The trust, which has been providing
services to youth for 24 years, was
forced to shut down its operations in
April after missing out on funding from
donors.
Shoreline operates Fuse, an afterschool
and holiday
programme at Matuku
Takotako: Sumner Centre,
and Lightswitch, a free
counselling service for Te
Raekura Redcliffs School.
Alicia Mallo has been
hired as its part-time
manager and will recruit
two youth workers to
facilitate the trust’s
programmes.
Trust chair Chris Jansen said it
has diversified its income streams to

solely on philanthropic funding.
Based on feedback from a six-month
community consultation, the trust
has decided to change its after-school
sessions for year 7-9 students to be on a
term-by-term enrolment model, where
families pay to register their children for
each term.
The after-school programmes will also

young people can ‘cruise in and out’.
Fuse programmes will also continue
two days a week to offer lunchtime
leadership programmes at Redcliffs and
Sumner schools.

Lortan century sees
Heathcote secure
spot in semi-finals

An unbeaten century from
Heathcote player-coach Tyler
Lortan has led his team to a
club-first spot in the Metro
premiership T20 semi-finals.
Second-placed Heathcote will
host third-placed Sydenham
at Heathcote Domain on Sunday,
with the match starting at
10.30am.
The winner will progress
to the final at
2.30pm, where they will
face either Burnside West
or Old Boys’, who meet
in the other semi-final at
Burnside Park.
Heathcote needed two
wins on Saturday to guarantee
a place in the top
four.
In the first match of their
double-header, against St Albans,
Lortan’s experience in big
moments paid dividends.
He scored 118 not out off just
67 balls, leading Heathcote to a
strong total of 191/5.
“We needed to win that game
to secure a semi-final so it was
just nice to contribute and get a
win to get us locked in,” he said.
The chance to become the first
Heathcote premier team to qualify
for the semi-finals provided
added motivation for Lortan.

However, personal milestones
were never front of mind, with
the batter focused solely on putting
his team in the best possible
position.
“If you score a hundred and
lose, it doesn’t matter. Winning
for me is everything,” he said.
St Albans were dismissed
for 120 in reply, with Matthew
Hocquard leading the attack by
taking four wickets for 24
runs in his three-over spell.
Heathcote carry a psychological
edge into the
semi-final after beating
Sydenham by five wickets
in Saturday’s afternoon
game, as well as securing
an outright victory over
them during the two-day
competition.
“The past results are
there and hopefully there’s a bit
of scarring we can open up and
get the win,” Lortan said.
“Having the proverbial wood
over them, I think it always puts
you in good stead. We are used
to winning against them and
they’re used to losing against
us, so they are going to have to
change the norm.”
In Saturday’s clash, Sydenham
batted first and posted 103/8.

“In terms of momentum and
confidence, it’s obviously sky
high, but you’ve just got to take
the momentum into the game
and focus on whatever task is at
hand,” he said.
Heathcote’s one-day campaign
also starts on Saturday against
Riccarton, and Lortan said it
would be difficult not to think
ahead to the following day.
“It’s just about keeping your
mind on the task at hand. It
would be good to start that comp
on the right foot and then obviously
take the momentum from
that game into Sunday,” he said.
