Candidates’
campaign
spending
revealed
BY KEES CHALMERS
Evans Pass Rd into Sumner is a
race track for some, particularly
for cyclists and motorcyclists.
The 2km stretch of winding
road has seen its fair share of
crashes; four serious and 12
minor so far this year.
So three Sumner residents,
Jason Irvine, Paul Bimler and
Ian Skelton, are trying to do
something about it.
Irvine has been videoing
cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers
descending Evans Pass,
many of which he says are
going too fast.
The speed limit is 50km/h but
Irvine estimates cyclists reach
more than 80km/h and motorcyclists,
more than 150km/h.
He, Bimler and Skelton have
taken their concerns to the
Waihoro-Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board.
Irvine has also been to the
police, but got nowhere.
“The police sort of laughed
about the idea of giving speeding
tickets to cyclists, but
they’re all part of the mix,” he
said.
“There’s no real governance
on the road and the behaviours
are now becoming normalised
deviancy. I’m really worried
someone’s going to get killed.
“It does feel a bit that they've
given up.”
Irvine said the issue had
worsened over the past 18
months.
Rising risks
pushing up
insurance
premiums
Christchurch and the wider
Canterbury region are seeing
house insurance premiums climb
faster than the national average
as insurers increasingly adopt
detailed, risk-based pricing.
Data provided to Newstalk ZB
by insurance comparison platform
Quashed show the average
quote for house insurance in
Canterbury has increased almost
twice as fast as the average quote
for house insurance nationally.
Stats NZ data shows home
insurance premiums increasing
56% in the past three years and
contents insurance premiums rising
55.3%.
On Quashed, the average house
insurance quote and average contents
insurance quote have both
risen 34% during that three year
period.
In Christchurch – where quotes
have risen steadily this year –
the average house insurance
quote has increased 60% and the
contents insurance quote has
increased 33%.
By comparison, Auckland has
seen house insurance quotes
increase 46% and contents quotes
30%, while Wellington – where
premiums are generally higher
– has seen house quotes rise 41%
and contents quotes surge 58%.
Quashed chief executive Justin
Lim said the data suggested
Canterbury was seeing house
insurance premiums rise
consistently, while Wellington
was seeing contents insurance
premiums rise more sharply.
Stinky corpse flower comes to life
Te Kaha gets its green icing
This the world-class turf
sports stars will ply their trade
on at One New Zealand Stadium
at Te Kaha.
The surface was revealed
to media on Tuesday as
the countdown to the $683
million stadium in April
accelerates.
Subcontractor Terrafirma
Turf has been growing about
1.2 hectares of turf on the
outskirts of Christchurch since
March for the stadium.
“We’ve got three different
varieties of seed. It’s a topsecret
mix so we can’t share
what that is, but generally
it’s a ryegrass that’s hard
wearing and actively growing
in summer and winter,” said
Terrafirma Turf managing
director Chris Lewis.
The turf has been harvested
in rolls, each around 11m by
1.2m in size and weighing
about 750kg. The turf is laid
in place over the ventilation
and irrigation systems and
subgrade.
City council
senior project
manager and
turf specialist
Richard Gibbs
has overseen
the turf
development
project over the
past nine years. Richard Gibbs
“This is very
much the green
icing on the cake. It’s a real
achievement to have got this
far,” he said.
Cantabrians have the chance
to see a rare flowering tropical
plant that smells of rotting
flesh and hardly ever blooms.
The corpse flower, Amorphophallus
titanum, has been
growing at the Botanic Gardens
since 2008 and has only ever
flowered one other time, five
years ago.
It originates in the rainforests
of Sumatra.
Botanic Gardens and Mona
Vale deputy director Nicky
Brown is encouraging garden
enthusiasts and people with an
interest in the unusual to see
the flower in person.
“There is only a small window
to see the plant flowering.
It last flowered in 2020 and it’s
impossible to predict when the
next time will be as there isn’t
an annual blooming cycle,” she
said.
“This is a rare chance for
people to see and smell the
corpse flower outside of
Sumatra.”
The plant blooms only when
sufficient energy is accumulated,
making time between
flowering unpredictable.
The bloom emerges from,
and energy is stored in, a huge
underground stem called a
“corm”.
It is on show at the Ilex
function room in the gardens
seven days a week between
9am and 5pm daily.
The turf is in place at One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha, while the last of the seating is being installed.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
The city council will maintain
the turf into the future.
“There are 10 misting fans
that’ll be keeping the surface
cool in summer and keeping the
air circulating.
“There will also be a system
under the pitch that can blow
air through the profile, keep
oxygen levels up and then the
final component is the artificial
lighting rigs which provide
supplementary light when
required,” Gibbs said.
Tony Anderson
Halswell
“My favourite
place is indoor
bowls centre on
Kearneys Rd. I
started bowling
about five years
ago, and go up to
five times a week. I love meeting
up with people who have similar
interests and have a laugh.”
Fire restrictions in place
A restricted fire season was
put in place for Canterbury
on midnight Monday. Anyone
wanting to light an outdoor fire
will need to apply for a permit
from Fire and Emergency NZ.
FENZ district commander Dave
Stackhouse said there had
already been a disappointing
number of callouts with people
ignoring basic fire safety.
“Reignition of previous burns or
burnoffs getting out of control
should not occur if people follow
the advice on checkitsalright.
nz,” he said. “Having a restricted
fire season allows us to limit the
number of these kinds of fires.”
Daycare to review its
processes after incident
WorkSafe has taken enforcement
action against the Kindercare
childcare centre in Woolston
where at least five children
suffered chemical burns. Five
children and two adults were
taken to hospital earlier this
month after a steriliser chemical
was mistaken for detergent
and used on a children's slip
and slide. WorkSafe southern
regional manager Adrian van
Dyk told RNZ it had issued an
improvement notice to the
centre, recommending it review
its processes around the use of
harmful sanitisers. Kindercare
has until today to comply with the
notice.
Back-up needed to fight fire
Firefighters called for back-up
after a house on Heaton St,
Merivale, caught fire shortly
after 5pm on Monday. Multiple
crews were sent to tackle the
blaze but due to the house being
"well ablaze," two further fire
crews were called in to help, Fenz
said. The fire was brought under
control shortly before 7pm.
Bus lane bottleneck causing confusion
BY DYLAN SMITS
How courteous are you when
another motorist lane jumps
to get up the queue of traffic
quicker?
That is the scenario being
played out on a busy stretch of
Halswell Rd as the carriageway
gets a $60 million upgrade.
Heading into the city from
the intersection of Dunbars and
Halswell roads, some motorists
will switch into the left lane to
jump the queue building in the
right lane.
But a short distance north of
the intersection, the left-hand
lane becomes a bus lane, forcing
drivers to either rely on the
traffic in the right lane to let
them in or accelerate to reach
the merging lanes first.
A Star staffer who uses
the road regularly said the
behaviour of motorists has been
a mixed bag.
“Most let cars merge when
they see a right hand indicator
go on, but at times a driver in
the right hand lane will see
someone trying to getting an
advantage by taking the usually
empty-ish left lane and get
agitated and do their best to stop
them from merging,” he said.
“There needs to be some kind
of good signage on the BP side
of the Dunbars Rd intersection
to warn drivers what lies ahead
regarding the lanes.
“At the moment there are
none at all.”
A Halswell resident who did
not want to be named, agrees.
A vehicle cutting into the right lane on Halswell Rd after running into the start of a bus lane.
He has seen many drivers on
Halswell Rd unsure of what to
do when they see the bus lane
coming up.
“They either plant their boot to
get ahead or slam on their breaks
to merge into the other lane.”
He said locals know the bus
lane is coming up so they merge
early.
“And you’ll notice, not a lot of
people indicate either.”
He has driven down Halswell
Rd many times, and is not a fan of
the improvements.
“Very little benefit for the
amount of money and time
spent.”
The new 24/7 bus lanes on
Halswell Rd are a major part
of the road’s (State Highway
75) wider upgrade, which also
includes new stormwater
systems, water main upgrades,
traffic signals at intersections, and
new cycling and walking paths.
The Star observed how
drivers are handling the lane
design during the morning
commute last Friday.
Most drivers heading into
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
the city appeared aware of
the upcoming bus lane and
switched into the right lane to
avoid it.
However, 10 vehicles in the
left lane were caught unaware
over a 30-minute period.
These drivers either slammed
on their brakes and waited for
a gap to merge into the right
lane or sped up to overtake
vehicles on the right. Some did
not indicate.
for some drivers
Waka Kotahi NZTA director
of regional relationships James
Caygill acknowledged the bus
lane design is somewhat
unique for Christchurch
but said it follows best
practice.
“In Christchurch, it is
typical for bus lanes to be
located on the kerbside
lane so buses can access
the bus stops, although
there are exceptions to
this,” he said.
“We do appreciate the
new road layout may require
some adjustment as road
users get used to it, and we are
monitoring the traffic flows for
any issues.”
James Caygill
The bus lanes have ‘bus lane
ahead’ and ‘bus lane begins’
signs to signal drivers to merge,
as required by roading
rules.
Caygill said the signs
are a clear indication for
drivers to merge.
Bus lanes on Papanui
and Lincoln Rds start
from the kerbside rather
than a regular driving
lane, while Manchester
St has a design similar to
Halswell Rd.
On Papanui Rd and Lincoln
Rd, the bus lanes operate only
during peak traffic times and
function as on-street parking at
other times.
The approach to the Halswell Rd bus lanes offers little space for merging. Distracted
drivers may find themselves stuck behind a bus, waiting to merge into the right lane.
Community board asks
The trio are concerned about
Ko Taku Reo – Deaf Education.
Sumner School is also close by.
Irvine asked the community
board to look at a speed camera
at the bottom of the hill to deter
people from going too fast. The
community board referred the
issue to city council staff to
investigate.
Irvine said police had told
him they could not take action
against the people he captures
on video on his phone.
“It’s my word against the
motorcyclists or the drivers, but
I’ve only really taken it to highlight
the issue,” he said.
Many people he videos hurl
Bimler also outlined to the
Risk-based quotes see prices surge
› From Page 1
“When we dig into the
regions, there are pockets
where insurance premiums
continue to climb. In these pockets
we are seeing continued
increases and quite significant
increases.”
The Insurance Council said
average quotes on comparison
websites may not give a full and
consistent picture of what customers
are actually paying.
Insurance premiums reflect
the underlying risk a property is
exposed to, the council said.
“New Zealand is one of the
most natural-hazard–exposed
countries in the world, and
some regions face higher or
more complex risks than others.
“Christchurch, for example,
has higher seismic risk, which
increases the potential cost of
claims.”
The Insurance Council said
as insurers move toward more
detailed, risk-based pricing,
premiums in higher-risk areas
could shift more than the
national average.
It said other pressures apply
across the country, including
rising building and repair costs,
more frequent severe weather,
higher reinsurance costs, and
Government taxes and levies.
“These combined factors
mean some regions will see
larger premium movements
than others.”
Candidates’ backers, campaign
BY DYLAN SMITS
Property developers and two
Lyttelton port unions were
among the larger donors
to mayoral and city council
candidates in October’s local
body elections.
But the highest-spending
campaigns were not always the
winners.
Candidates have now provided
their electoral donation
and expenses return forms.
In a display of support for
anti-asset sale candidates, the
two port unions – the Maritime
Union of New Zealand
(MUNZ) and the Rail and Maritime
Transport Union (RMTU)
– made unique donations totalling
$6500 to new Heathcote
Ward city councillor Nathaniel
Herz-Jardine.
Herz-Jardine is strongly
opposed to selling Lyttelton Port
Company and other key city
council asset companies, while
rival candidate Ian Kearney
only came out against a port
sale later in the campaign.
Herz-Jardine, a left-leaning
The People’s Choice member,
went on to win the election
by 1612 votes against Kearney
(5206 to 3594).
It was the only highly-competitive
open ward race, after
incumbent Sara Templeton
stood for mayor only.
Herz-Jardine said he has a
good working relationship with
the union membership and
New Heathcote Ward city councillor Nathaniel Herz Jardine at a city council meeting in August 2021, advocating for a living
wage for council contractors.
built up the relationships, particularly
during the anti-asset
sale movement in 2023.
“We’ve worked together
before and I think there’s
a lot of trust there,” said
Herz-Jardine.
He asked for about $1000
from RMTU initially, but after
further discussion both union
memberships unanimously
decided to donate more.
MUNZ Lyttelton branch
president Gerard Loader said
the union has
not made any
other election
donations in
the 10 years
he has been in
leadership.
RMTU Lyttelton
Port branch Gerard Loader
secretary Mark
Wilson said they
have not donated to a campaign
since John Minto’s mayoral bid
in 2016.
Loader said MUNZ chose
to support Herz-Jardine over
other anti-asset sale candidates,
due to most of them being
more “entrenched” left-leaning
incumbents with a good chance
of victory.
“We knew the donation would
be most helpful for Nathaniel,”
said Loader.
When asked about the
union donations, LPC referred
The Star to parent company
Christchurch City Holdings Ltd.
CCHL did not respond before
deadline.
Herz-Jardine’s campaign also
received $7190 from left-leaning
People’s Choice political
ticket, of which he is a member.
He spent $16,864 during the
campaign period.
Both Heathcote candidates
had high spending during the
campaign period compared to
most ward races, with Kearney
spending $16,320.
Kearney received $27,500 in
donations above $1500.
Any campaign donations
above $1500 must be declared,
and any campaign expenditure
in the three-month period
before the election must be
detailed in the return forms.
This means some candidates
can make significant undeclared
spending on campaigns
earlier in the election cycle.
There is also a $70,000
spending limit during the
campaign period for mayoral
candidates and $20,000 for
Back behind the wheel again
Three weeks after handing in his
keys, Terence was back behind the
wheel of another Scania. His wife
still won’t let him forget she was
right - nor that he had the shortest
retirement she’s ever heard of.
For 15 years, the 66-yearold
had driven heavy haulage,
commanding a 500hp Scania
truck. It was the kind of career that
becomes a lifestyle. But inside the
cab, his body was telling him to
stop.
Years ago, Terence had crashed
a motorcycle high up in the
Hakataramea Pass, blown off the
road by high winds. He severely
damaged his left knee. Even after
a while, the joint never felt quite
right.
Driving a truck isn’t like driving
a car. The clutch is heavy. The
gearbox demands constant work
from your left leg - up, down, up,
down - shift after shift, hour after
hour. For Terence, every push sent
a reminder through his knee and
ankle.
“I was exhausted,” he admits.
“Loss of mobility, loss of sleep. I
just felt beaten.”
One stormy night, after a team
meeting, Terence had finally had
enough. He climbed out of his
truck, handed in his keys, and
walked away from the career he
loved.
“I thought, ‘What do I do now?’”
At home, his wife had been
reading about Koru FX, a natural
cream made in Christchurch. She
ordered him a bottle.
“I wasn’t interested,” Terence
laughs. “I thought it would be like
everything else I’d tried. But she
insisted.”
The bottle sat unopened for days.
Then one morning, with nothing to
lose, Terence applied it to his knee.
The cream absorbed quickly with
a pleasant peppermint scent, not
sticky, not stinking like a rugby
locker room.
“I noticed it took the edge off,”
he says. “But I wasn’t convinced.”
That afternoon, an old mate
rang. Word had got around that
Terence had hung up his keys. His
friend needed someone to cover a
shift and the truck had an 18-speed
Road Ranger gearbox.
“For those not in trucking,”
Terence explains, “a Road Ranger
requires heavy, constant clutch
work. The same thing that did me
in.”
“I thought, ‘Perfect,’” Terence
grins. “If this cream is useless, I’ll
know by tonight. Then I can write
to the company and tell them so.”
He climbed into the cab. Pushed
the clutch. The knee responded.
“I did a full day’s work,” he says,
still amazed. “Got out at the end of
the shift and could move freely. No
seizing. Nothing.”
Instead of a complaint, Terence
sent Koru Nutrition his story.
What makes Koru FX different
is its triple-action formula. The
blend of 16 natural oils, including
mānuka, arnica, and black pepper,
work synergistically. Warming
oils help the ingredients penetrate
deep, while peppermint provides
fast-acting support. Arnica and
calendula then deliver long-lasting
comfort.
The retirement he thought
was forced upon him has been
postponed. He’s back doing what
he loves, commanding the Scania
on the roads he knows best. These
days, Koru FX is part of his
morning routine before every shift.
“My wife won’t let me forget she
was right,” he laughs. “But I don’t
mind. I’m back in the truck.”
spending revealed
ward candidates except Banks
Peninsula, which has a $7000
limit.
Mayor Phil Mauger’s re-election
campaign was the biggest
spender during the election
period with $68,015, close to the
legal spending limit.
His campaign received
$116,000 in donations over $1500.
Mauger’s largest donors were
from property developer Miles
Yeoman with $11,000, March
Construction co-founder Buzz
March with $8000, Amherst
Properties owner Lindsay
O’Donnell with $7500, and car
dealers Bruce and Kaye Miles of
the Miles Group with $7000.
His campaign spending
included $11,850 on electronic
billboards, $11,700 on
print advertising, $9940 on
radio advertising, $10,800 on
online advertising, $7940
on billboard signage, and $1360
on vehicle signage.
Mauger’s main rival Sara
Templeton received $29,463 in
donations over $1500 with her
campaign spending $67,927 during
the election period, close to
Mauger’s total.
Her campaign’s biggest individual
donations came from
Canterbury University biological
sciences professor Dave
Kelly with $9070 and former
Labour Minister Judith Tizard
with $5000. Ōpāwaho Heathcote
River Network treasurer
Kay Robertson made a personal
donation of $5000.
Mayor Phil Mauger spent $7900 on billboard signage, and $11,850 on electronic
billboards during the October local body election.
Other ward elections with
high campaign spending
included Innes, Central and Riccarton
wards.
Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock
Residents’ Association chair
Tony Simons was the highest
spending ward candidate at
$18,680.
But he lost to incumbent People’s
Choice city councillor Tyla
Harrison-Hunt by 518 votes
(1657 to 1139).
Harrison-Hunt only spent
$3627 on the campaign, mostly
funded by People’s Choice.
He says it shows money is not
everything during an election.
“I didn’t feel the need to put
my name out everywhere this
election. I felt like the best way
to win was just to be knocking
on doors and talking.”
People’s Choice incumbent
candidates all provide a portion
of their city councillor salary to
a funding pool which is divvied
up among the candidates based
on political need.
In Central Ward, former
city councillor Raf Manji also
had considerable campaign
expenditure at $17,567.
But incumbent city councillor
Jake McLellan won by 667 votes
(1870 to 1203), with People’s
Choice spending $10,121 out
of the $14,077 total campaign
cost.
Former city councillor Ali
Jones spent $17,458 taking on
then deputy mayor Pauline
Cotter in Innes but lost by 246
votes (3273 to 3027), the closest
ward election result.
Cotter spent $13,670, with
$9117 in campaign funding
coming from People’s Choice.
The work has been scheduled
for the quieter holiday period
to minimise disruption to
residents, businesses and
schools, said city council
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury.
“Scheduling this super week
reduce the overall length of the
project and get a lot of work
done while people are away
for the holiday period and the
roads are quieter.”
Bradbury said the community
has been very supportive of the
improvements the city council
is making to Harewood Rd.
“We appreciate their continued
patience,” he said.
While the city council’s transport
and three waters teams
have co-ordinated their work in
the area to minimise disruption
by taking a ‘one pass’ approach,
some disruption is inevitable
said Bradbury.
“Our contractors are working
hard to reduce the impact on
residents and road users, and
have worked closely
with local businesses, schools
and churches to accommodate
their needs as much as
possible.”
Bus routes 8 Port to Port
(Airport to Lyttelton), 27 Northwood/Huntsbury
Climate change
could take nearly
all of NZ's glaciers,
research shows
BY KATE NEWTON
Almost all of New Zealand's
glaciers could disappear if
global warming continues on
its current track, new research
shows.
Glacier researchers say that
level of loss would contribute
to sea-level rise, make water
shortages worse, and affect
tourism.
The study, published in
Nature Climate Change on Tuesday,
modelled the number of
glaciers around the world that
will completely melt at different
levels of warming above preindustrial
levels.
It found that if the world
warms by 2.7°C, 87% of New
Zealand’s 3300 glaciers will
disappear by the end of this
century.
That level of warming is a
plausible scenario, according to
international non-profit Climate
Action Tracker, which tracks
the effects of current climate
change policies.
In an even more dire scenario,
where global warming
reaches 4°C, just 100 of the
country’s glaciers would
remain.
It shows glacier loss in New
Zealand peaking between 2035
and 2052, at a rate of more than
50 a year.
Canterbury University associate
professor Heather Purdie
has been involved in long-term
monitoring of New Zealand's
glaciers and said there were
widespread consequences if
they were lost.
“Every glacier that’s disappearing
is then becoming more
water in the ocean, so it has
implications for cause sea level
rise,” she said.
New Zealand was lucky to
have plentiful water, but glaciers
were still an important
resource, Purdie said.
Losing glaciers completely
would also change the shape
and flow of rivers, as snow and
rain falling at the heads of valleys
would no longer be slowed
by their presence.
Purdie has monitored Rolleston
Glacier in Arthur’s Pass for
many years and said the pace
of change had quickened in the
last five to 10 years.
Glaciologist Heather Purdie, right, carries monitoring equipment up Rolleston Glacier.
“You stand up there and look
over it, and it's just like – wow.
This thing is really thinning, it’s
really just shrinking before our
eyes,” she said.
“We’ve had these summers
where absolutely no snow has
been left on small glaciers like
the Rolleston Glacier by the end
of summer . . . The summers
were just too hot, too warm, too
much melt, and so your glacier
is going to be going backwards
really fast when it’s doing a lot
of melting and not getting any
gain at all.”
The new research made it
clear that limiting warming
could save thousands of glaciers
around the world from that
fate, Purdie said.
“That’s a frustration of
working in this space, is that
we’re witnessing increasing
temperatures, decreasing ice
mass, and yet at the moment,
our current government is
pulling back on our pledges.”
The economic argument
was often used as an excuse
not to take more action, Purdie
said.
But there were long-term
implications of not doing
anything, and that included the
potential effects on tourism.
“If it gets to the point where
they’ve all shrunken up into
the mountains, then that’s got
economic implications too.”
Antarctic Research Centre
associate professor Brian
Anderson has been monitoring
of New Zealand’s most wellknown
glaciers for 25 years.
He said Franz Josef Glacier
on the West Coast – a major
tourism drawcard – had
retreated up the valley by more
than 2km since he first studied
it.
Purdie said even now, it was
much harder to see the glaciers
up close than it was a decade
ago.
Whimp
company
investigated
The Financial Markets
Authority (FMA) is investigating
a Christchurch-based
investment corporation led by
businessman Bernard Whimp.
The investigation centres
around Chance Voight Investment
Corporation, as well as
subsidiaries, persons and entities
associated with Chance
Voight Group.
The six companies associated
with Whimp are Chance
Voight Investment Corporation
Ltd, Chance Voight Investment
Partners Ltd, CVI Securities Ltd,
CVI Financial Ltd, CVI Partners
Mortgage Fund Ltd, CVI Partners
Mortgage Income Fund
Ltd.
Interim liquidators PWC is
due to report back to the High
Court by January 26.
Whimp rose to prominence
in the 2010s for making offmarket
offers to buy shares
from investors at below their
market value. The then-
Securities Commission took
Whimp to court over what it
termed misleading “low ball”
offers.
In 2014, the FMA tightened
regulations around off-market
offers, effectively stopping the
practice. Last month, Chance
Voight bought financial advice
provider Patterson Wealth,
but Patterson Wealth did not
appear to be affected by the
liquidation orders.
Blue cottage that drew big crowds sells
A tiny blue cottage near the
beach that drew record crowds
has sold for $520,000.
The Blake St house in South
New Brighton had 120 groups at
its first open home – the busiest
Ray White New Brighton had
seen in 30 years.
Ray White agent Ricky Cave
told OneRoof the buyer was a
downsizer who was moving a
few suburbs over.
Cave said classic two-andthree-bedroom
homes in the
New Brighton area were proving
popular with first home buyers.
He told OneRoof they had 250
people through the cottage in
total – and 95% of them were
first home buyers.
“There were lots of locals and
lots of people who just loved
cottages – there’s a real following
for that old classic cottage
style.”
Entry-level homes in the
New Brighton area, such as the
Blake St property, had RVs in
the $400,000s and were selling
in the $500,000s, Cave told
OneRoof.
“I don’t think there’s any
other suburb in Christchurch
where you can get a nice home
close to the beach on a piece of
land in the $500,000s. I think
that’s why there was so much
interest,” he said.
A two-bedroom house at 94
Bowhill Rd had attracted similar
attention.
The property, which has an
RV of $475,000, was listed on
November 26. The deadline was
brought forward this week and
12 offers were made, Cave told
OneRoof. The property is now
under offer with a price well
above its RV.
“People are coming through
just loving it. We’ve had so
many offers on it.”
The blue cottage on Blake St, New
Brighton, has sold after record
viewings, while a two-bedroom house
on Bowhill Rd, also in New Brighton,
received 12 offers.
Recycle your batteries safely in new units
PHOTO: CCC
Household batteries can now
be disposed of more safely,
with upgraded, fire resistant
collection units.
Over the past year, there have
been 31 fires across the collection
service, with 26 at EcoDrop
transfer stations. More than
15,000kg of batteries were collected
during this period.
City council resource recovery
manager Dr Alec McNeil
said the battery receptables at
the EcoDrop resource recovery
centres and EcoShop are now
fire resistant.
“Our new units are fitted
with fire suppression and heat
sensor technology, and fireresistant
liners, making the
process a lot safer for residents,
staff and our sites,” he said.
The upgraded stations have
24/7 monitoring, meaning staff
or FENZ are notified when a fire
has started, or conditions suggest
a potential risk.
The upgraded units are at the
Parkhouse, Metro and Styx Mill
EcoDrop Resource Recovery
Centres, and the Blenheim Rd
EcoShop.
“It’s free to dispose of most
common household batteries
using these collection units, and
we really encourage people to
use them,” McNeil said.
Batteries should not be put
in wheelie bins or directly into
transfer station pits.
Students nail it with kennel gifts for SPCA
Appeal for
sightings of
stolen trailer
Police investigating a stolen
trailer and motorcycles are
seeking help from the public.
On Monday, police received a
report that a trailer (above) had
been stolen sometime overnight
on Sunday from an address on
Kairua Rd, Hornby.
The trailer – registration U110C
– was then used in a theft of four
motorcycles from an address
on Almond Ln, Prebbleton, on
Monday.
Police have since located the
trailer and now need the public’s
help to try find where the trailer
has been or who may have been
driving the vehicle towing it.
If you have any information
regarding the thefts or the
trailer’s movements from 4pm on
Sunday onwards, police would
like to know.
Information can be provided
through 105, either online or over
the phone, using reference number
251215/1054.
Alternatively, reports can
be made anonymously though
Seven-month-old staffy-cross
Manny and his canine pals at
the Christchurch SPCA have
a cool space to hang out this
Christmas while they wait for
homes of their own, thanks to a
donation from Ara Institute of
Canterbury.
Nine wooden kennels, crafted
by year 11 and 12 students
taking part in Ara’s carpentry
dual enrolment programme,
have been generously donated
to the SPCA.
The programme, which
combines school studies with
hands-on vocational learning
across a range of subjects,
wrapped up last week.
“We were delighted to deliver
these finished projects to the
SPCA as we rounded off classes
for the year,” said Ara portfolio
manager for construction
trades Mandy Gould.
“It’s a win for everyone,” she
said.
The idea came from an Ara
staff member who was keen to
see the snug kennels go to good
homes.
Made of plywood with treated
timber footings and treated
fence palings for roofing, they
took several weeks to measure,
cut and construct, with students
working in small teams.
Said carpentry tutor Tim
Melker: “It’s actually a great
project to learn the elements of
building a house.
“With rafters and bargeboards
and footings, they get an
understanding of the terminology
and use power tools and
hand tools along the way.”
SPCA Christchurch Centre manager Natasha Sutton and mixed-breed Manny with his new kennel.
Christchurch SPCA centre
manager Natasha Sutton said the
kennels would be put to good use
in play spaces “during run around
time” or distributed as needed.
“They’re great for our dogs to
chill out in or have a nap out of
the sun. But they’ll be handy for
those who might not have a kennel
lined up,” she said.
“We rely so heavily on our
community for lots of things,
and donations like this are just
fantastic. We can’t thank Ara
enough.”
Sutton said it was a busy time at
the centre with animals awaiting
adoption and the kitten season in
full swing.
She said she would love people
who are not going away and
have time on their hands to consider
fostering an animal for the
holidays.
“If people are off work and having
a nice break over Christmas,
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
we’d love them to consider fostering
for us because we have lots of
animals in the shelter who would
rather be out in a home for this
period.
“Fostering is a fantastic way to
give some love to an animal in
need, especially those who need
to learn what a loving home feels
like,” Sutton said.
• Anyone interested in fostering a
dog can contact the SPCA via email at:
Who’s in charge of the premier
The city’s rugby union and
league clubs are laying the
groundwork for the 2026
season. Sam Coughlan looks at
the coaches who will be leading
the charge
Metro rugby
MARIST ALBION
2025: 1st, won final
Defending champions Marist
Albion will have a new head
coach in 2026 as they look to
defend their title, with assistant
coach Sam Chamberlain stepping
up to replace Ross Kennedy
in the top job.
Kennedy will still be an
assistant coach, but he has opted
to focus on his representative
coaching duties with the
Cavaliers.

LINWOOD
2025: 4th on table, lost final
Brendan Nolan returns for
his third season in charge of
Linwood’s and will
look to continue
the good work of
recent years for
the Bulls.
Under Nolan,
Linwood have
made the final in
each of the last two
seasons, securing
their first title in 51 Brendan Nolan
years in 2024 and
falling narrowly short this year.
Sam Chamberlain, left, has replaced Ross Kennedy, right, as head coach at Marist
Albion next year.
HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS
2025: 3rd, lost preliminary final
Old Boys have a new coach
for the 2026 season with
assistant coach Jimmy Hema
replacing Joff Mooar in charge
after a season where HSOB
were knocked out in the
preliminary final.
Hema has previously cocoached
Old Boys alongside
Pete Manson as well as taking
charge at Belfast.
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
2025: 7th, lost preliminary final
Matt MacDougall is staying on
for a second year in charge of
Lincoln University, who made
a good fist of the playoffs this
year before being knocked out
in the preliminary finals by
eventual champions Marist
Albion.
MacDougall has previously
coached the Crusaders under 18
and under 20 sides.
UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY
2025: 2nd, lost semi-final
New head coach Tim Belcher
has replaced the outgoing Daniel
O’Brien for 2026, taking the step
up from directing the club’s colts
programme.
UC were knocked out in the
semi-finals this year despite
finishing second on the ladder,
after suffering a defeat in the
final in 2024.

SYDENHAM
2025: 5th, lost semi-final
Mark Croft is staying at the
helm of Sydenham, who were
losing semi-finalists to Linwood
after finishing fifth in the
regular-season.
Croft, who is Sydenham’s rugby
development officer, was also an
assistant coach for Canterbury’s
Farah Palmer Cup team who this
year went down to Waikato in
the final.

BELFAST
2025: 10th, won plate final
Head coach Nathan Anderson
is staying on at Belfast for his second
year in charge of the team,
after overseeing
a season of two
halves in 2025.
Belfast finished
10th in the regular
season but went
on a stunning run
to win the plate
competition, beating
sixth place
New Brighton
in the final.
Nathan
Anderson
Anderson said he believes if they
had finished in the top eight and
made the playoffs, they could
have won the whole thing.
NEW BRIGHTON
2025: 6th, lost plate final
Seaside stalward Scott Pawson
is returning for his 13th season
in charge of New Brighton, having
only missed
the 2020 season
since starting in
2013.
A former player,
he led the team
to sixth in the
standings last
year before they
crashed out of the
playoffs to Lincoln
Scott Pawson
eventually went down to Belfast
in the plate final.

BURNSIDE
2025: 8th, lost plate semi-final
Willie Brown returns to coach
a Burnside team that had an
up-and-down season in 2025,
sneaking into the playoffs after
finishing 8th before being
knocked out, and going on to lose
the plate semi-final.
Brown has played and coached
through the grades since first joining
Burnside in 2003.

SUMNER
2025: 9th, lost plate semi-final
After being a whisker away
from reaching the playoffs in
2025, Wave head coach Gareth
SPORT
Super Sunday
to decide T20
champions
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Breakout tournament signals
bright future for young star
Defending champions Burnside
and first-time finalists Heathcote
will host Sunday’s Metro Premier
T20 semi-finals at 10.30am, each
aiming to secure a spot in the
final later that afternoon.
Burnside will host Old Boys
Collegians, while Heathcote
face Sydenham.
Both hosts secured toptwo
finishes by winning their
final round-robin matches on
Saturday, with Heathcote’s
five-wicket afternoon win over
Sydenham seeing them leapfrog
their opponents into second
place on net run-rate.
St Albans narrowly missed
out on a semi-final berth
despite beating Riccarton, but a
loss to Heathcote in the morning
left them with too much
ground to make up.
St Albans captain Lachie
Harper scored 121 not out in
the afternoon win, having earlier
been on the receiving end
of a century from Heathcote’s
Tyler Lortan who scored 118
not out.
The one-day competition also
starts on Saturday ahead of
Sunday’s T20 finals.
Competition leaders Sydenham
host Old Boys, while last-placed
Riccarton visit Heathcote,
Burnside plays St Albans away
and East Shirley host Lancaster
Park, with all matches at starting
at 10.30am.
BY SAM COUGHLAN
St Margaret’s College has
announced itself as a rising force
in girls’ cricket, making the final
of the national championship –
and showcasing a crop of players
to watch in the years ahead.
The school went down to
Palmerston North Girls’ High
School by seven wickets in
Sunday’s final in their first-ever
trip to the girls’ first XI cup.
Opening batter Ciara
Hartland, who has recently
finished year 12, was the top
run-scorer at the tournament
and was rewarded by being
voted tournament MVP.
Hartland, 17, the niece of former
Black Cap Blair Hartland,
scored 392 runs in six innings
and averaged a mammoth
130.67.
Her top score of 108 not out is
the second-highest in the competition’s
history.
“I kept going out there to just
see how well I could go,” Hartland
said.
“I just wanted to stay in and
then see how much I could help
my team by scoring some runs.”
And help her team she did.
“I didn’t really expect it to
go that well. I thought maybe a
couple of times I would have got
out, but I was just in good form
at that tournament,” she said.
St Margaret’s College opener Ciara Hartland was the tournament MVP and top
run-scorer at the girls’ first XI cup, with 392 runs at an average of 130.67.
PHOTO: THOMAS BIRD
“Each game I just reset and
then (I was) just focusing in and
not letting anything distract
me,” she said.
Hartland was not the only St
Margaret’s player to impress –
batter Jessica Gearry scored 127
runs in the tournament, including
an unbeaten 48 in the final,
and captain Lily Young snared
nine wickets at an average of
16.44.
Coach Amanda Hardy said
she was proud of the team’s
efforts at their maiden national
tournament.
“I don't want to say it
exceeded my expectations
because I actually didn’t know
what to expect,” she said, “but
the tournament itself is a real
privilege to be at.
“Each day the girls gained
confidence in what they were
doing.”
Hartland’s summer of cricket is
just getting started. She will play
for Canterbury A against Otago
in Dunedin today and tomorrow,
and is also part of Canterbury’s
under 19 side for the national
tournament in January.
She has also been training
with the Canterbury Magicians
for the past month, something
the teenager said was “scary” to
begin with.
“I always had it as a goal. It
was a wee bit scary at the start
but I feel like I’ve settled in and
now it’s just pretty cool.”
Hartland represents Old Boys
Collegians’ premier side alongside
Magicians teammates Missy
Banks, Nat Cox and Abby Gerken,
and said she hoped to make
her Canterbury debut at some
point this season.
“Possibly, if they need me, but
I've got Canterbury A stuff and
then the 19s, and then after that,
I’m not really sure. We’ll just see
what happens.”
Next year Hartland said she
would be back to try and help St
Margaret’s qualify for a second
consecutive national cup.
Enjoy a super fun day out at Supa Karts
If you’re looking for an action-packed and
fun day out for the whole family, then head to
Supa Karts where you can get a real taste of
motorsports.
Situated in the heart of Christchurch, Supa
Karts has been a family favourite for decades
– and because it’s indoors, you’re guaranteed a
great day out, whatever the weather.
Supa Karts has recently unveiled its brand-new
track layout, which is longer, faster and more
exciting than the previous one – it also allows for
better passing meaning you can race like never
before.
The indoor track is one of the few kart tracks
in New Zealand that caters to the whole family –
from four to 94!
Kids aged between four and seven, can use the
Entries close January 16 2026
To be eligible for the draw all entries must
include your name and contact number
tandem karts to come along for the ride, while
the junior karts allow those aged eight and over
to get their thrills in safety.
The adult karts are perfect for those with
a need for speed. Discover your inner Shane
van Gisbergen with single, double or four ride
combos.
Meanwhile, groups of more than eight drivers
aged 16 and over can get their F1 fix with
the Individual Grand Prix. The fastest in the
10-minute qualifying session is awarded with
pole position for the 10-minute race itself.
Likewise, the Team Endurance Races cater
specifically for large groups and it’s all about
strategy. It is a relay event just like Le Mans, with
each driver on a team driving for two 10-minute
stints. So, make sure your quickest driver is saved
for last.
If your kids need to let off steam during the
school holidays and settle some friendly scores on
track, Supa Karts is just the place.
Slide, splash, explore
Summer is finally here, and with
the warm weather and longer days,
it’s a great opportunity to round up
your whanau and get outdoors to
blow away the cobwebs.
If you’re looking for a fun place
you can spend the day without
spending a cent, then grab yourself
a picnic and head to the Margaret
Mahy Playground on the banks of
the Avon River.
The Margaret Mahy Family
Playground is a fantastic spot with a
super-sized play area that’s suitable
for all ages – from gentle play for
little ones, to adventurous activities
for older children – so the kids can
burn off some energy and make the
most of the four-metre-wide slide,
water cannons and sprinklers,
climbing tower with a spiral slide,
tunnels, swings and sand-play area.
Framed by beautiful landscaping
and open lawns right in the heart
of the city, the playground offers
so much more than a place to play,
and if you’re looking for a bit of
peace and quiet, you can head out
to the jetty beside the river to soak
up the stunning scenery and try
and catch a glimpse of the tame
eels.
