COMFORT

CRAFTED

BEAUTIFULLY

The 2026 design trend that turns

ordinary rooms into hygge-inspired

havens — here’s how to get the look

with Cosentino

As 2026 unfolds and life settles into a gentler rhythm, there’s no better time

to rediscover comfort within your own space. Hygge — the beloved Danish and

Norwegian philosophy of warmth, ease, and mindful living — invites us to slow

down, savour simple pleasures, and surround ourselves with things that soothe.

With Cosentino’s beautifully crafted surfaces, every room becomes a haven of

calm, charm, and cosy contentment.

SLEEP WELL, WAKE REFRESHED

Hygge begins in the spaces where we rest. In the bedroom, soft cotton linens,

woollen throws, and textured cushions create a comforting cocoon ideal for

deep, restorative sleep. Ambient lighting — from table lamps or the soft glow of

candles — enhances the room with a gentle, serene warmth.

For a foundation of natural elegance, Cosentino’s Dekton® Sandik and Dekton®

Trevi from the Dekton® Pietra Edition bring subtle beauty. Their creamy hues and

soft veining add quiet sophistication, perfectly shaping a sanctuary that feels

peaceful, grounded, and inviting.

SOAK, RELAX, AND RECHARGE

Nothing captures the hygge spirit quite like a warm, unhurried

bath. Transform your bathroom into a soothing retreat with

Dekton® Pietra Kode by Cosentino, especially in the calming

Pair these surfaces with glowing candlelight, plush towels, and

simple greenery to create a spa-like refuge — a space where you

can breathe deeply, unwind, and melt away the day’s pressures.

COOK, SHARE, AND COSY UP

In any hygge-inspired home, the kitchen becomes the heart of

gathering and connection. Whether preparing comfort food or

sharing a quiet mug of cocoa, create an inviting culinary nook

with Dekton® Grafite or Dekton® Sabbia from the Dekton® Pietra

FRESH

BEGINNINGS

7 Malaysian Restaurants So

New, Foodies Are Keeping

Them Secret — Until Now!

As the calendar turns, Malaysia’s dining scene is buzzing with fresh concepts and bold ideas.

From rooftop sanctuaries to intimate kitchens, these new openings aren’t just about food—

they’re about stories, craft, and community. Here’s your guide to seven standout spots, complete

with what to order and why they deserve a place on your list.

YELLOW FIN HORSE @ ELSE HOTEL

After years in Michelin-starred kitchens such as Robuchon au Dôme and Narisawa, Chef Jun

Wong returns home with a clear vision: elemental cooking. Expect dishes centred on primal

techniques—open flames, curing and fermenting—served in a space that feels more like a stylish

apartment than a traditional restaurant. Think Mediterranean-inspired plates, natural wines

and curated vinyl nights for a soulful, atmospheric dining experience. Must-orders include the

labneh with salted plums, burnt butter hummus and grilled fish with pickled vegetables, with an

indicative budget of RM200–350 per person depending on shared plates and drinks.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TASTE

UPPER HOUSE KL @ ROOFTOP, B HOTEL

Created by twin brothers Alex and Kelvin Cheah of KARLS Group,

Upper House is a striking glasshouse perched above Petaling

Street, offering sweeping views of Merdeka 118. Its menu elevates

hawker classics with refined, share-friendly interpretations, while

the cocktail list stands out with inventive signature creations. Mustorders

include the Wagyu ox tongue on toast, butter fish with

yuzu-soy and crispy chee cheong fun, with an indicative budget of

RM120–220 per person based on recent menu prices.

ONE BRICK DROP @ DAMAI ROAD

Set in a former Laos Embassy bungalow, One Brick Drop is more

than just a restaurant—it’s a cultural hub that hosts craft markets,

creative collaborations and community-driven events. The cuisine

leans Japanese with a modern, indulgent twist, featuring standout

dishes such as uni pasta, ikura pesto risotto and engawa claypot

rice, all crafted to match the venue’s effortlessly stylish atmosphere.

Must-orders include the uni pasta, ikura pesto risotto and engawa

claypot rice, with an indicative budget of RM120–250 per person.

MERAKI DINING @ SECTION 17

Born from a pandemic-era private dining concept, Meraki has evolved

into a warm, greenery-filled space where chefs Lai Chee Hung and Barath

Kumar M. Sakrapani craft dishes that celebrate local flavours through

contemporary technique—comfort food elevated without ever losing its

soul. Signature plates such as the Chicken Rice Risotto, Laksa Panjang

Vongole Basah and Chilled Somen with ulam tempura reflect their

thoughtful approach, with an indicative budget of RM90–180 per person.

From the team behind Kay’s Steak & Lobster comes Fiel, a modern

grillhouse dedicated to the art of charcoal cooking. Here, premium cuts

are kissed by mangrove wood smoke, seafood is grilled to perfection

and even the drinks experiment with fermentation for added depth.

Must-orders include the koji-aged Hanwoo oyster blade with yuzu

hollandaise, flame-kissed seafood and the house-fermented tepache,

with an indicative budget of RM150–350 per person.

GAIA’S KL @ LEVEL 37, ILHAM TOWER

Gaia’s pays homage to Northern Malaysian traditions and Thai influences,

weaving history and regional flavours into every dish. Set high above the

city, it offers a dining experience that feels both grounded in heritage

and beautifully refined. Must-orders include the seasonal rice-forward

sharing plates and Smoked Wagyu ribs and Turmeric Wrapped Cod

grillled with Miso, with an indicative budget of RM150–280 per person.

ZAATARU @ TTDI

Chef Joel Kirk and Ameer Alzalek unite two culinary worlds in a lively,

hands-on dining concept where fusion is done right. Expect dishes like

hummus with bonito, edamame falafel, and breads designed to be torn

and shared, creating a communal, interactive experience. Must-orders

include the picnic platter of Levantine dips, bonito hummus, grilled

green olives with wasabi stems, edamame falafel, and fattoush, with

an indicative budget of RM80–160 per person based on menu pricing.

So there you have it—seven of Malaysia’s freshest culinary hideaways

that even the savviest foodies were keeping under wraps. From elevated

hawker classics to smoky grillhouses and lush greenery-filled escapes,

your taste buds are in for a serious adventure. Consider this your official

VIP pass: now it’s your turn to sneak in, savour every bite, and maybe—

just maybe—keep one or two of these gems your little secret too.

WATERCOLOUR LIDS & PASTEL EYES

Soft pastel eyes are shaping up to

be one of 2026’s most romantic

beauty statements. Runways favour

sheer washes of lavender, pink, baby

blue and peach, applied lightly and

blended to feel almost translucent. For

Valentine’s, this look feels intimate and

THE ROSY & TOASTY FLUSH

Blush has been taking centre stage,

romantic revival, bringing sweetness,

playfulness and a touch of drama to

every hairstyle. Expect everything from

personality-driven hairpins to soft hair

scarves that channel a charming, retro

vibe. Whether you lean dreamy, daring

or demure, the season’s accessories

turn even the simplest hairstyle into a

love-day moment.

FEATHERED, DEFINED LASHES

Lashes in 2026 are light, fluttery and even

coloured. Rather than heavy falsies, the emphasis

is on length, separation and tinted lashes that

opens up the eyes. This style draws attention to

the gaze while keeping the face soft.

BARELY-THERE BASE, MAXIMAL EXPRESSION

Beyond make-up, the self-care narrative is

strong in 2026, with targeted skincare being the

priority for going bare-faced. Skinimalism, they

call it. Lightweight bases, sheer coverage and

visible skin texture are encouraged rather than

concealed. This creates a fresher, more honest

canvas that feels personal and real.

44

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TREND

GLOSS, SHEEN & SOFT-FOCUSED LIPS

Matte steps aside as glossy and softly sheened lips

dominate the season. Hydrated textures catch the light

beautifully and feel more natural, especially in close,

intimate settings. Shades stay close to the lip’s natural

tone, enhancing rather than transforming. It is a reminder

that softness often makes the strongest impression.

PLAYFUL MIXED MAXIMALISM

With all these trends in mind, 2026 beauty ultimately

embraces personal combinations rather than rigid rules. A

glossy lip paired with pastel eyes, a rosy flush with a hint

of shimmer, or minimal skin balanced by expressive lashes

all feel right. This mix-and-match approach makes romance

feel individual rather than prescribed. Love, after all, is

rarely one-note.

THE NEW

AESTHETIC

ORDER

Spring/Summer 2026 arrives

with rare momentum. With

so many creative debuts at

the big fashion houses, the

season feels charged with

possibility, each director

eager to define a fresh era

After SS25’s so-called “trendless summer”, a deliberate break from

the relentless micro-trend cycle, it’s no surprise that SS26 pivots

away from novelty aesthetics like Barbiecore. Instead, the season

builds on broader, more enduring ideas, shifting the conversation

back to silhouette, craft and mood.

A COLOUR-CLASHING PALETTE

Colour this season behaves less like an accent and

more like a proclamation. Designers sent out headto-toe

primaries, layered intentionally in “clashing”

compositions that radiate optimism. Designers toyed

with unexpected pairings like cobalt and lemon, and

electric reds with saturated yellows. The effect is bold,

bright, and unmistakably confident. Wear multiple

brights at once, and let them argue happily.

SCULPTURAL VOLUMES & SILHOUETTES

Volume for SS26 is not just big, it’s engineered.

Designers are exaggerating hips and skirts so clothes

seem to hover around the body rather than trace it.

Soft jerseys and chiffons are layered into fluid, almost

gravity-defying shapes. However they are sculpted or

draped, the silhouette stands away from the body. A

single piece is enough to make a theatrical entrance.

FRINGE, TEXTURE & CLOTHES THAT MOVE

Movement is a key SS26 storyline with designers sending

out hems, panels and entire dresses that swish and

shimmy with every step. Fringe dominated the runways,

but this season’s interpretation traded bohemian sway

for material experimentation. Leather fringes ripple like

silk and precision-cut strands animate hourglass knits.

Texture, rather than print, does the talking. So these

pieces aren’t loud, they’re alive.

SKIN, LINGERIE & THE MIDRIFF (YES, SEX IS BACK)

Designers have stopped coyly hinting at sensuality and gone straight for the torso

as the focal point. Tailored suits are broken up with exposed midriffs, bra tops seen

through sheer layering, and underwear is literally daywear. The key is strategic reveal,

one bold area of exposure balanced by structure everywhere else.

THE DESCENDING WAISTLINE

Waistlines have officially relocated. Specifically,

downward. Drop-waisted dresses create long,

elegant torsos, while hip-sitting skirts brought back

a modernised sense of 1920s ease. Whether via the

flapper-like drop seam or the nonchalant low rise, the

effect is elongating, streamlined and quietly sensual—all

described as delivering effortless sex appeal.

DENIM REFRESH: FROM DISTRESSED TO DEFINITIVE

We thought it would be the “skinny jeans”, but denim

is re-emerging across two contrasting directions. On

one end, designers explored distressed treatments

with sculptural intentionality: shredded seams, frayed

panels, and uneven washes as textural language. On

the other, there is the return of the “definitive jean”:

clean, unfussy, and beautifully cut. The range is wide,

but the takeaway is clear—denim is once again a

designer canvas.

THE NEW BLOOM

Florals for spring, how groundbreaking. But indeed,

they still are! Designers are giving new life to romantic

boldness; tactile blossoms that stand proud from

the garment, petals erupting from bodices, abstract

blossoms curling along hemlines, and single oversized

blooms anchor entire looks. Even printed florals feel more

painterly, more intentional, more expressive.

Beyond

From

Bront Palarae’s

boldest

transformation

is only just

beginning

Over the past 25 years, Bront Palarae

has become one of Malaysia’s most

intriguing screen presences, navigating

roles that span tortured protagonists,

genre-bending horror comedies,

and cross-border productions from

Malaysia to Indonesia and Thailand.

His career defies easy categorisation—

something he attributes simply to a

“growth mindset.”

A NEW PHASE OF REINVENTION

While many actors pause between productions, Bront has chosen

a more rigorous route: he is currently in his third semester of an

MBA at the Asia School of Business, in collaboration with MIT

Sloan. The programme will soon take him to Boston for a monthlong

immersion, a prospect he approaches with his characteristic

blend of discipline and curiosity. “Keep learning, keep absorbing.

Experience, knowledge, and… friendship,” he says, distilling his

motivation with quiet clarity.

Keep learning,

keep absorbing.

Experience,

knowledge

and…

friendship

This academic pursuit marks a deliberate shift. After decades

immersed in the creative side of filmmaking, Bront now seeks to

understand the structures that underpin the industry—the policy,

economics, and long-term strategy that shape regional storytelling

ecosystems. “It’s time to expand the horizon,” he notes. “And to

pay it forward.”

ORIGINS & IDENTITY

Born Nasrul Suhaimin, Bront’s stage name was an unplanned legacy

from childhood, a nickname that followed him into adulthood and

eventually onto international marquees. “At some point you just

accept it,” he says. “There’s no point resisting.”

His heritage is equally layered: Malay, Chinese, Pakistani and Thai.

“Palarae” is his mother’s Thai family name, a tribute to a multilingual

upbringing shaped by Thai at home, Bahasa Malaysia in school,

English and Hokkien from his father, and later Indonesian through

work. “It’s not even like British versus American English,” he reflects.

“More nuanced, more complicated.”

CRAFT, FEAR & THE DISCIPLINE OF CHOOSING WELL

Bront approaches his craft with a surprising ally—fear. Not fear of the

dark, but of falling short. He looks for roles that unsettle him slightly,

those that ignite what he calls a necessary spark. “It makes me

focus,” he says. “It gets me up in the morning with clear motivation.”

He has just completed a Malaysian production with director

Razaisyam Rashid and the “High Council boys,” and is now

preparing for the Indonesian remake of My Wife Is a Gangster,

directed by the original Korean filmmaker. Yet his selectiveness

remains unwavering. “The toughest part is resisting the illusion of

money for something more meaningful,” he admits. “Because every

project you commit to means saying no to another.”

Bront switches it up easily and

instantly proving that his acting

range has no bounds

BEYOND ACTING: PRODUCING & THE LONG VIEW

Though widely regarded as a leading man, Bront originally

trained as a director-producer. He has already produced One Two

Jaga, and continues refining his behind-the-camera instincts by

observing directors on set. “Actors wait a lot,” he says. “You get

to see how directors handle pressure and time crunches. It’s like

head-hunting, really.”

Directing, however, is a future ambition. For now, he remains

committed to balancing his dual identities as actor and student.

LANDMARK ROLES & THEIR IMPACT

Bront resists the idea of a single breakthrough performance, preferring

to see his trajectory as a cumulative ascent. Even so, certain titles

have left indelible marks:

• Belukar – his first Best Actor win

• Ola Bola – expanded his reach to non-Malay audiences

• Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slaves) – screened in 42 countries and

solidified his international presence

• Indonesia’s horror-comedy Ghost in the Cell – a project he wryly

notes was marketed so poorly that audiences mistook it for a

forensic thriller

Each milestone brought new challenges—and, by his own admission,

new heights to pursue.

BETWEEN WORLDS: WORK ABROAD, HOME AT HEART

Off-screen, Bront is markedly introverted, preferring quiet corners

to the centre of attention. “I need to warm up,” he says. “Once I’m

comfortable, okay lah.” At home, fatherhood remains a grounding

force, and he credits his wife—a former producer and longtime

confidante—with anchoring their family rhythm. “She understands

the industry,” he says. “And that helps a lot.”

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

60

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TOTAL

Working abroad allows him to keep emotionally heavy roles from

spilling into domestic life. “You don’t bring the negative charges

home,” he explains. “Especially with kids.”

THE ROAD AHEAD

This chapter of Bront’s life is defined by balance: ambition tempered

with humility, reinvention anchored by experience. Age, he reflects,

has taught him to trust the natural course of things. “If it’s meant for

you, it’s meant for you.” Yet he remains driven—still searching for

roles that challenge him, stories that stretch him, and opportunities

that broaden his creative and intellectual world.

If it’s meant for

you, it’s meant

for you

It is this constant evolution—this refusal to remain still—that makes

Bront Palarae endlessly compelling. Each reinvention reveals a new

facet, each role a new resonance. And while audiences may never

know exactly which version of him will appear next, one thing remains

certain: it will be nothing short of extraordinary.

The

Fitness

INSIDE THE

WORLD OF

82

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

The first thing you notice at a HYROX event is not the noise, although

there is plenty of that. It is the hum. A low, nervous energy that fills

the arena long before the first wave begins.

Athletes pace the floor, headphones on, shoulders rolling, calves

stretching, quietly recalculating the decision they made months

earlier when they clicked “register”. HYROX is not a sport built

on elegance. It is built on effort, repetition and the uncomfortable

honesty of physical limits.

The race format is brutally simple. Competitors complete a total

of eight kilometres of running, broken into eight separate onekilometre

segments. After each run, they tackle a functional workout

station. Run one kilometre, work. Run again, work again. Repeat

eight times. The same sequence, the same distance and the same

movements in every race around the world. There are no surprise

obstacles, no last-minute changes, no muddy trenches. The clarity

is almost confrontational. You know exactly what is coming, which

somehow makes it harder.

HOW A GLOBAL FITNESS RACE WAS BORN

HYROX was conceived in Germany in 2017, when sports event

organiser Christian Toetzke and Olympic hockey champion Moritz

Fürste set out to design a new kind of mass-participation competition.

They wanted something that felt as serious and measurable as a road

race, but structured around the kind of functional training people

were already doing in gyms. The first events in Hamburg brought that

idea to life: an indoor race, in a controlled environment, built around

running and a fixed menu of exercises.

They wanted

something that

felt as serious

and measurable

as a road race,

but structured

around the kind

of functional

training people

were already

doing in gyms

From the beginning, standardisation was central. HYROX events

were designed so that a race in Hamburg, London or New York

would follow the same format. Athletes would always start with

a one-kilometre run, move through the same eight stations in the

same order and finish with wall balls. That consistency turned

HYROX from a one-off challenge into something closer to a sport. A

time set in one city could be meaningfully compared with a time set

in another. Functional fitness, long treated as a training style rather

than a discipline, suddenly had a scoreboard.

WHAT HYROX HITS DIFFERENT

On paper, HYROX looks straightforward. Eight runs, eight workout

stations, all indoors. In practice, the cumulative fatigue reshapes

everything. The event tests both endurance and strength. The

stations typically include a SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad

jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and, at the very end,

wall balls. None of these movements are particularly exotic, but the

way they are combined is punishing.

What surprises many first-time competitors is how much the

running dominates the experience. With eight kilometres in total,

the race quietly behaves like an endurance event, even before you

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

84

add resistance. Strength-focused athletes often discover that it

is not moving the sled that breaks them, but arriving at the sled

already breathless. Endurance athletes, meanwhile, must cope

with the shock of repeatedly dropping into heavy, full-body efforts

between runs.

THE TENSION BETWEEN GROWTH AND FAIRNESS

As HYROX has expanded across Europe, North America and Asia,

it has faced the growing pains that come with rapid success.

Questions about consistency, fairness and identity have become

more prominent, especially at the elite level. Debates around sled

difficulty, flooring and environmental conditions reflect a wider

conversation about how closely a global sport can be standardised

in practice, not just on paper.

There is also an ongoing discussion about what HYROX actually is. It

is often called a “hybrid” event, a blend of endurance and strength,

but that makes it hard to compare neatly with traditional endurance

races or established strength sports. Some athletes embrace this

ambiguity, arguing that it reflects the way people are now training

in real life. Others would prefer sharper boundaries.

The organisers, meanwhile, must balance two priorities: keeping

HYROX accessible as a mass-participation event and refining it as a

serious competitive discipline. Both are central to its identity.

Nevertheless, HYROX’s future appears busy. Calendars show an

increasing number of races across major cities, and demand for

entries has risen to the point where some events sell out quickly. The

elite field is becoming deeper and more professional, with athletes

specialising in the format and brands recognising its marketing

86

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

appeal. There is talk of further expansion and more formalised

circuits, including regional championships and high-profile finals.

With that growth comes the risk of losing the grassroots, communitydriven

feel that helped build the sport. For now, however, HYROX

remains recognisably itself: loud, demanding, repetitive in the best

possible way.

BACK TO THE STARTING LINE

Every HYROX story eventually returns to the same point. The arena.

The starting corral. The quiet moment before the countdown, when

an athlete glances at the layout, feels a flicker of doubt and then

steps forward anyway.

HYROX is

not about

perfection.

It is about

presence

HYROX is not about perfection. It is about presence. It is about

committing fully to the effort in front of you, without distraction or

disguise. It asks a simple but unsettling question: how fit are you, really?

Not on your best day. Not in theory. Not online.

Here. Now. One kilometre, one station, one breath at a time.

For a growing number of people around the world, that question is

impossible to resist.

Let’s be honest — parking in Malaysia can feel like a national sport.

Whether it’s squeezing into that one spot at Mid Valley on a weekend,

attempting a heroic parallel park outside your favourite kopitiam, or

doing the slow crawl around Publika hoping someone will reverse

out — we’ve all been there. But the OMODA 7? It’s not just playing

the game. It’s here to win, collect the medals, and wave at us smugly

while doing it.

Armed with APA (Automatic Parking Assistance) and RPA (Remote

Parking Assistance), this SUV parks with more confidence than the

average Malaysian who’s been driving for 20 years. Vertical, parallel,

slanted, tiny like-your-neighbour’s-condo-lot, or hilariously irregular

— OMODA 7 handles them all with the grace of a seasoned parking

valet. With the ability to support over 1,000 parking scenarios, it’s

practically the encyclopedia of parking. If it could talk, it would

probably say, “Boss, I got this.”

APA is like having a super-smart co-driver who never complains.

Approaching a parking space? OMODA 7 scans the situation, assesses

the angles, calculates the turns, and glides in — all while you sit there

pretending you knew how to do that manually. It handles entry and

exit maneuvers, picks the best parking spot, and even memorises

your reverse paths. Yes, it remembers. If only your partner did that

when you mention where you want to makan.

The bold and stylish SUV is the

first six-seater flagship model

from OMODA | Jaecoo Malaysia,

that combines modern luxury,

smart technology, and serious

off-road power

In tight residential lanes or old shoplot back alleys where space is

quite a squeeze, APA can retrace your steps with precision, making

traced reversing feel like a magic trick. Now here’s where things get

downright futuristic. With RPA, you don’t even have to be inside the

car. Just step out, whip out the key remote, and watch your OMODA

92

7 do the work. It slides in and out of tight spaces like it has years

of yoga experience. No more squeezing your body like kuih lapis

just to exit your car when someone parks too close. No more fear of

scratching your doors on concrete pillars in multi-storey car parks.

Just pure, blissful convenience.

This feature alone should earn it a Datukship.

The OMODA 7 boasts the fewest maneuvers and the fastest parking

speed in its segment. Translation? When everyone else is still

awkwardly turning the steering wheel left-right-left, you’ll already be

walking away confidently, pretending the car didn’t just park itself.

OMODA 7’s parking system is calibrated using global data, from the

EU to China, meaning it’s battle-tested across some of the world’s

most chaotic car parks — which, frankly, sounds perfect for Malaysia.

If it can survive European cobblestone streets and Beijing’s tight

residential zones, it can handle KLCC on a sale day.

With its intelligent systems, broad adaptability, and uncanny ability to

park better than most of us, the OMODA 7 sets a new gold standard for

parking convenience. It saves time, reduces stress, and gives you peace

of mind — especially in those “I definitely cannot fit there, lah” moments.

So yes, the OMODA 7 might be the most thoughtful parking partner

you’ll ever have. And unlike your friends, it’ll never judge your parking

skills — mostly because it doesn’t need you to park at all.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

BACK FROM

EXTINCTION

These creatures didn’t get the memo

about being extinct — and thank

goodness for that

In a world where the news cycle often feels like a conveyor belt of gloom, it’s a rare delight

to stumble upon stories that prove nature still has a wicked sense of humour — and a flair for

dramatic comebacks. So, settle into your favourite armchair, pour yourself something suitably

celebratory, and discover 7 creatures that casually re-entered the chat after decades — or, in one

case, millions of years — off-grid.

ATTENBOROUGH’S LONG-BEAKED ECHIDNA: THE PRICKLY HIDE-AND-SEEK CHAMPION

If animals had celebrity patrons, this spiky monotreme clearly chose wisely. Named in honour

of Sir David Attenborough, it’s one of the few mammals that lay eggs — because apparently

being rare wasn’t special enough. Last seen in 1961, the species spent over 60 years avoiding

humans before cheekily resurfacing in 2023 in Indonesia’s Cyclops Mountains. With its pointy

snout, protective spines, and general “do not disturb” energy, it is both adorable and vaguely

prehistoric, like a hedgehog that’s mastered espionage.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

VICTORIAN GRASSLAND EARLESS DRAGON: THE LIZARD THAT GHOSTED US

Once common in the Australian state of Victoria, this petite dragon went offgrid

for more than 50 years. Officially MIA since 1969, it had biologists fearing

the worst. A 2019 study even suggested extinction. But in 2023, the dragon reemerged

— presumably tired of the rumours. Sixteen individuals were promptly

whisked into a breeding programme at Melbourne Zoo, where, one imagines, they

are being treated like scaly royalty.

Clockwish from left: The

Victorian Grassland Earless

Dragon; the Chacoan

Peccary; Wallace's Giant

Bee; and the Coelacanth

COELACANTH: THE FISH THAT FORGOT TO DIE (66 MILLION YEARS AGO)

Few creatures can claim to have skipped their extinction appointment by several

geological periods. Thought to have vanished alongside the dinosaurs, the

coelacanth popped up in 1938 when a South African fisherman hauled one aboard.

Enter Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, the museum employee who realised the catch

was not just unusual — it was a scientific mic drop. This ancient fish, complete

with limb-like fins, is now a conservation icon and possibly the most glamorous

comeback queen in the oceans.

CHACOAN PECCARY: THE PIG WITH A POSTHUMOUS PLOT TWIST

Imagine thinking an entire species of pig-like mammals vanished thousands of

years ago… only for locals in Argentina to casually mention, “Oh yes, they’re over

there.” Discovered “officially” in 1971 after fossil-only assumptions, the Chacoan

Peccary proved once again that Western science sometimes just needs to ask the

neighbours. With its tough hide and desert-savvy demeanour, this is one pig that

refused to be pork-gotten.

rediscoveries are

that nature still

surprises,

WALLACE’S GIANT BEE:

THE SUPERSIZED BUZZ YOU CAN’T UNHEAR

Four times larger than your standard honeybee, Megachile pluto is

not the species you’d expect to misplace. And yet, scientists did —

for 38 years. In 2019, a colossal female was spotted nesting inside a

termite mound in Indonesia. With a 4 cm body and a wingspan that

could make a hornet jealous, it has instantly become the diva of the

insect world. Unfortunately, palm oil expansion continues to threaten

its habitat — a reminder that even giant bees need tiny homes.

NEW GUINEA BIG-EARED BAT:

THE ONE WITH THE EARS (TRULY, ENORMOUS EARS)

Collected in 1890, named in 1914, and then promptly never seen

again, this bat vanished for over a century. That is, until two

Australian PhD students stumbled upon one in 2012. A bit of

museum sleuthing confirmed the identity, proving that sometimes

all you need is patience — and access to very large filing cabinets.

98

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

Top to bottom: The New

Guinea Big Eared Bat and

the Antioquia Brushfinch

ANTIOQUIA BRUSHFINCH: THE PIOUS BIRD WITH PERFECT TIMING

Rediscovered in 2018 by a man on his way to Sunday mass, this

Colombian brushfinch made headlines for its impeccable sense of

occasion. After nearly 50 years without a confirmed sighting — and

after only recently being recognised as its own species — the little

bird gave conservationists reason to rejoice. More individuals have

since been found, giving hope that this feathered Lazarus might

thrive again.

NATURE’S PLOT TWISTS REMIND US: HOPE ISN’T EXTINCT

In a century where conservation battles feel endless, these

rediscoveries are joyful reminders that nature still possesses secrets,

surprises, and a slightly mischievous streak. Whether it’s an egglaying

mammal, a venomous shrew, or a bird that resurfaces on the

way to church, each comeback is a small miracle of survival.

THE

SWEET

TRUTH

Why sugar is delightful,

dangerous, and definitely

not going anywhere

(especially in Malaysia)

Sugar: Malaysia’s unofficial national treasure. It sweetens our kopi,

gives our kuih their irresistible charm, and ensures every festive

season is a glorious, syrupy affair. Yet, behind its sparkling white

façade lies a complicated love story — one filled with passion, denial,

overindulgence, and the occasional stern warning from your doctor.

Welcome to the fascinating, slightly sticky world of sugar: adored,

demonised, misunderstood, and absolutely essential… in moderation

(yes, we hear you, WHO).

Here’s the plot twist: sugar itself isn’t evil. Your body needs glucose

— it’s the fuel that keeps your brain buzzing, your muscles moving,

and you functioning through Monday meetings. But added sugars?

They’re the drama queens of the dietary world: all flair, no nutrients.

Too much of the stuff is strongly linked to a string of health issues.

Excessive sugar intake plays a significant role in the development

of chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic

fatty liver disease, and even some cancers. It is also a

major contributor to weight gain, as sugary foods and beverages

add calories without promoting satiety, encouraging overeating,

and increasing the risk of obesity-related illnesses.

Not to forget, sugar is the number one culprit behind dental caries

— the most common chronic disease on the planet — which is why

your dentist winces every time you mention bubble tea. Beyond

that, sugar can affect executive function, making it harder to focus,

plan, or resist cravings, and it contributes to chronic inflammation,

the silent troublemaker behind many long-term health problems.

110

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

Not all sugars behave the same way in your body, and this is where

the nuance comes in. Natural sugars found in whole fruits come

packaged with fibre, which slows absorption and keeps blood sugar

levels more stable. Added sugars in processed foods, however,

enter the bloodstream like they’re late for an appointment — fast

and dramatically.

Left to right: The sweet,

light and delicious kuih

lapis; like a warm hug,

Malaysia's teh tarik is

wanted by all

Then there’s the long-standing debate: is sugar the villain, or is

excess calorie intake the real culprit? Some researchers argue

that weight gain and metabolic disease are more closely tied to

overall energy surplus rather than sugar alone. Meanwhile, the

plot thickens with artificial sweeteners. While they contain fewer

calories, some research suggests they might disrupt gut bacteria,

leaving your microbiome mildly offended even if your calorie count

looks virtuous.

A major reason sugar contributes to weight gain is its ability to

sneak into almost everything. From fizzy drinks and desserts to

sauces, condiments, and seemingly “healthy” snacks, sugary items

add up far quicker than most people realise. Sugar doesn’t promote

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

111

fullness, spikes insulin levels, and encourages cravings, making it

remarkably easy to consume far more calories than intended. It’s

not so much a willpower issue as it is biology — sugar knows exactly

how to charm you into that “just one more doughnut” moment.

Beyond the waistline, sugar can interfere with your brain’s executive

function — the part responsible for decision-making, focus,

impulse control, and remembering where you left your car keys.

The combination of quick energy spikes and equally quick crashes

can leave you foggy and irritable. Meanwhile, sugar also fuels

inflammation, which acts like low-level background drama inside

the body and contributes to chronic disease.

The World Health Organization recommends that added sugars make

up no more than 5% of your daily calorie intake. That translates to

approximately six teaspoons per day — or, for Malaysians, roughly

half a can of soda, depending on brand, ice level, and whether the

stall kakak was feeling generous. It’s a tall order in a country where

“less sugar” often still tastes undeniably sweet.

112

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRIVE

Let’s be honest: Malaysians giving up sugar entirely is about as likely

as a fried rice stall closing at 8pm — highly improbable. But choosing

smarter options is perfectly doable. Limiting added sugars begins

with understanding where they lurk: flavoured yogurts, condiments,

breads, instant drinks, and even so-called “health snacks.” Reaching

for whole foods — think vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean

proteins — helps stabilise blood sugar and reduce cravings naturally,

as fibre slows digestion and moderates energy release.

Making mindful swaps also goes a long way. Choose plain yogurt

instead of dessert-like versions, opt for whole fruit instead of juices,

and consider black coffee or low-sugar beverages instead of liquid

desserts masquerading as tea. And of course, staying active remains

one of the best ways to support a healthy metabolism. Exercise

helps your body use glucose more efficiently, acting as the cleanup

crew after an enthusiastic sugar party.

Sugar is delicious. It’s cultural. It’s festive. It brings joy, nostalgia, and

community. But it’s also calorie-dense, metabolically mischievous,

and far too easy to overconsume. The trick isn’t to exile it — it’s to

treat it like a luxury item. Savour it. Respect it. Enjoy it sparingly, the

same way you would use truffle oil or store a designer bag.

In the end, the sweetest lifestyle is one lived in balance — indulgent

enough to enjoy, disciplined enough to sustain, and wise enough to

know when that second slice of cake is truly worth it.

Life is about

balance so cancel

out indulgences

with exercise and

movement

Sugar is delicious.

It’s cultural. It’s

festive. It brings

joy, nostalgia, and

community. But

it’s also caloriedense,

metabolically

mischievous, and

far too easy to

overconsume

STRENGTHENING FIRE

PREPAREDNESS:

TROPICANA & BOMBA CONDUCT TRAINING &

FIRE DRILL AT ITS HEADQUARTERS

Tropicana strengthens its fire preparedness with the Bomba & Rescue Department Damansara team as well

as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") committee

To enhance fire prevention and preparedness, Tropicana

recently conducted its annual fire drill exercise for the safety and

security of Tropicana HQ and all its employees and tenants on

25 November 2025. A total of 750 occupants were led by 44

floor wardens and 1 fire marshal, to ensure everyone is familiar

with the building’s evacuation procedures, the emergency exits,

and the designated assembly point. The exercise involved the

cooperation of 8 officers from Bomba & Rescue Department,

Damansara, and representatives from the IOI Mall Damansara.

This safety exercise, together with Tropicana’s Health and

Safety Framework, forms an integral part of the Group’s ESG

commitments, with a strong focus on employee well-being, safe

working conditions, and meaningful community engagement.

Michelle Pow, Senior General Manager of Administration for

Tropicana, thanked the Bomba team as well as the Occupational

Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") committee for

conducting the exercise and emphasised the importance of

holding such drills at least once a year. “These exercises are

essential for testing the building’s emergency systems, fire

equipment, and staff readiness. It also prepares employees for

real emergencies by practicing evacuation procedures, reducing

panic, and minimising response times. With the help of 8 officers

from the Bomba & Rescue Department Damansara, this initiative

also gave us a chance to engage them to review our safety

plans and route, ensuring an effective response time during an

emergency. Tropicana is also equipped with an AED unit, a first aid

kit, a wheelchair, a stretch bed, and a sick bay. All 44 floor wardens

and the fire marshal also received the necessary training.”

Mohd Shahir Bin Aziz, Operations Officer of Bomba & Rescue

Department Damansara, who led the fire drill, shared his

positive feedback, “There was great cooperation from Tropicana

and our appointed floor wardens and fire marshal today. This

fire drill exercise went smoothly, and we’re proud to have

provided support and shared safety tips to drive continuous

improvements.”

The exercise simulated an uncontrollable fire scenario where an

immediate evacuation was initiated. Floor wardens activated

emergency procedures, guiding all staff down the stairwells to a

designated safe zone. The scenario also included one simulated

casualty who was safely transported using an evacuation

wheelchair, treated at the assembly point, and prepared for

transfer to the nearest hospital.

Tropicana will continue to improve its safety and security

measures for its employees’ and tenants' well-being. For more

information about the fire drill and the exercise, visit www.dosh.

TOWARDS A

GREENER FUTURE:

TROPICANA HOSTS CLIMATE ACTION WORKSHOP

FOR SUPPLY CHAIN PARTNERS TOWARDS NET-ZERO

Tropicana collaborated with the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei, and Alliance Bank

to host the PROGRESS Climate Action Workshop. Held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort on 3

November 2025, more than 30 vendors and companies under the Tropicana Group supply chain were

in attendance. With the target audience being CEOs, directors, project leaders, project managers,

mid-senior management, and business owners, the core objective of the program is to build climate

resilience and competitiveness among Small and Medium Enterprises and their entire supply chain to

achieve net-zero. The workshop emphasised “Going Green Makes Good Business” and the importance

of ESG, providing insight to more than 30 of Tropicana’s vendors on how ESG practices positively

influence business resilience.

Ong Chou Wen, CEO of Tropicana Corporation Berhad, shared his insights at the start of the workshop,

"Good to see that Malaysia’s real estate sector is embracing ESG-driven transformation, aligning its

efforts with the nation’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Across the property

industry, ESG principles are increasingly being integrated through initiatives such as retrofitting

buildings for energy efficiency, incorporating renewable energy systems, and adhering to green

certification standards such as GBI, GreenRE, and LEED. At Tropicana, we are proud to have 20 greencertified

buildings under our belt — a testament to our steadfast commitment to sustainability. We will

continue to advance along this green path, promoting sustainable developments and greener lifestyles

guided by our three ESG pillars: People, Planet, and Partnership. These pillars steer our sustainability

journey — nurturing communities, protecting the environment, and fostering meaningful, long-term

collaborations. Today’s Climate Action Workshop reflects this commitment. By engaging with you,

our valued supply chain partners, we aim to move forward together towards a more sustainable and

greener future.”

on the program, saying, “Through the PROGRESS Climate

Action Workshop, UNGCMYB collaborates with Tropicana and

Alliance Bank to empower supply chain partners in translating

sustainability commitments into tangible business action. This

initiative forms part of our broader PROGRESS programme,

which has engaged over 13 corporate supply chain leaders and

delivered 18 workshops across six states this year – all aimed at

supporting SMEs in their climate transition and building more

resilient, future-ready supply chains.”

Roy Heong, Chief Sustainability Officer of Alliance Bank Malaysia

Berhad, said, "As ‘The Bank for Life’, we believe that sustainability

is not just a compliance checklist, but a strategic approach that

can create positive impact for both business and society. We

are proud to partner with Tropicana Corporation Berhad to

extend our bank’s Sustainability Impact Programme to engage

their supplier network, helping them meet Tropicana’s and the

broader market's sustainability requirements, while enhancing

their competitiveness within the sector.”

PROGRESS AND RESPONSIBILITY

The PROGRESS Climate Action Workshop is co-owned by the UN

Global Compact Malaysia & Brunei and Alliance Bank Malaysia

Berhad. UNGCMYB serves as a key partner, providing the content,

tools, and expertise to help businesses, particularly SMEs and

supply chain partners, integrate sustainability into their operations.

Alliance participates as the program’s exclusive banking partner,

committed to extending funding and offering green solutions and

incentives to the participating SMEs to support their transition to

low-carbon practices. By transitioning to sustainable and green

business practices, vendors are positioned to mitigate climaterelated

risks, tap into green market opportunities, and become

more competitive and resilient in a low-carbon economy.

Tropicana began its sustainability journey in 2016, progressing

with the establishment of its materiality matrix and governance

structure. Since then, the Group has continued to strengthen its

ESG framework and practices through the implementation of

key policies, including the Human Rights Policy, ESG Policy, and

Anti-Corruption Policy. In support of global sustainability efforts,

Tropicana has aligned its initiatives with 13 United Nations

Sustainable Development Goals ("SDGs"). As Tropicana strives

to create a positive impact, its goal is to become a future-ready

property group that upholds the principles of people, planet, and

partnerships. Reflecting this commitment, Tropicana integrates

sustainable methods into its construction and township planning

processes. This dedication to greener developments is further

guided by the GreenRE framework, with which Tropicana

proudly established a partnership in 2024.

Tropicana has achieved 20 GreenRE-certified buildings, and will

continue expanding this number — developing more sustainable

and energy-efficient buildings across the Group’s townships in

Malaysia. Tropicana is also in the midst of conducting its climate

risk assessment to understand the potential impacts of climate

change, both physical and transition risks, which will help in

future strategic planning. Facing climate risks is a collective effort,

and through this program, Tropicana will mitigate and adapt to

these risks, enabling the Group and its vendors to navigate the

challenges ahead while continuing to strengthen its ESG practices

by following the necessary guidelines. To learn more, visit www.

Tropicana initiated its ESG community engagement program by bringing long-term value to the Ulu

Gerik Orang Asli community in Perak. Reinforcing its commitments to community development,

Tropicana extended its support to the village by helping to improve its water supply systems

and infrastructure. To commemorate the completion and handover of the upscaling works on 1

December 2025, representatives from the Tropicana team and Perak state authorities visited the

village and donated essential food assistance.

This initiative was a collaborative effort between Tropicana, Tropicana’s community-conscious arm

Tropicana Foundation, subsidiaries Tropicana Golf & Country Resort and Mesatria, and its contractor,

Mercu Inai. This program is aimed at uplifting the community, bringing relief to the 360 residents.

Speaking at the completion and handover ceremony, Allan Wong, Managing Director of Tropicana’s

Project Division, said, “For many years, Tropicana has collaborated with the Perak State Government,

improving the communities together. We are pleased to note that our upgrading program helped

enhance the lives of the indigenous community in Perak. Beyond that, we also donated food

supplies and celebrated the unveiling ceremony with them, building a better relationship. Aside

from addressing our ESG commitments, this program is also aligned with the Group’s United Nations

Sustainable Development Goals with a focus on good health and well-being, promoting livable

and was under-resourced in terms of food. We are thankful to Tropicana for stepping up to support and

for improving their quality of life. We hope to collaborate on more CSR initiatives to help the people.”

For 6 months, the Tropicana team worked closely with the Orang Asli community and its contractor,

delivering materials and ensuring the work was completed on time. The Orang Asli community also

chipped in to assist in the building works. Their existing water supply pipes were replaced with larger

pipes to improve water pressure and ensure a more consistent supply to the community.

Chan Huan Hui, Senior Manager of Operations for Mesatria, emphasised, “The community living within

Ulu Gerik plays a crucial role in the maintenance of our plantation. It is only fitting that we give back to

them to ensure that they aren’t struggling in their own day-to-day when it comes to food and water.”

Tok Batin Bili, Head of Ulu Gerik Orang Asli village, shared, “On behalf of the Ulu Gerik community, we

are very grateful for Tropicana and the team's valuable contribution. With this, we finally have a proper

water supply system in place. It will surely provide greater efficiency and benefits to the community.

We are also happy that the team showed up to celebrate the end of the upscaling works and donated

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TATTLE

ROYAL SELANGOR:

FROM TIN TO TIMELESS

VISIT TO TT5 – WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

It was a rainy Saturday as we journeyed past winding rivers

and old mining ponds to Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5

(TT5)—Malaysia’s last surviving dredge and the symbolic

starting point of Royal Selangor’s Autumn/Winter 2025 story.

Built in England in 1938 and upgraded in 1963, TT5 was once

the beating heart of Perak’s tin industry, operating for 44

years until the global tin collapse in 1982. Today, its towering

steel corridors and colossal machinery stand as a proud relic

of an era that shaped the nation’s economy and identity.

DINNER AT JEFF’S CELLAR

If TT5 was the prologue, Jeff’s Cellar was the chorus. Set within

260-million-year-old limestone caves, the venue offered a

dramatic counterpoint of age and innovation. Amid stalactites

and candlelight, Royal Selangor unveiled its Autumn/Winter

2025 collection, a season that reads like Malaysia told in

chapters—heritage, nature, and culture translated into pewter

forms that balance function and feeling.

The Autumn/Winter 2025 lineup is more than a seasonal

release—it’s a curated narrative of heritage, innovation, and

artistry. Each collection is designed to reflect Royal Selangor’s

enduring philosophy: craftsmanship that remains relevant

because it is rooted in authenticity. This season brings

together sculptural home accents, functional lifestyle pieces,

and pop-culture collectibles, forming a spectrum that speaks

to both tradition and modernity.

Underlying this is a commitment to process: rapid prototyping

paired with meticulous craftsmanship, digital precision

complemented by artisanal touch. The result is a cadence of

innovation that shortens lead times without compromising

quality, allowing each launch to feel polished yet alive. AW2025

is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating objects that live

well, resonate emotionally, and stand the test of time.

beautiful and practical. Through use, it gathers meaning,

stories of roots and resilience, reflecting the brand’s journey across Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, and China.

More than a vessel, the Melon Teapot embodies continuity, turning a simple pour into a ceremonial gesture

of heritage.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 THRILL

THE QUIET SHIFT

Is Streaming Changing the Way We Watch

Films, or Who We Are As An Audience?

There is a specific kind of decision that has become normal in the

streaming age: the tiny, almost invisible moment when you are

about to watch a film and you ask yourself whether it deserves

“the effort”. The shoes, the traffic, the unspoken agreement to

sit still and not check your phone. Streaming has made watching

a film frictionless, and frictionless is a kind of magic. But it also

changes what a film is allowed to be in our lives.

The argument is usually framed as convenience versus

tradition, or price versus experience. That is tidy, but it is not

the real question. The deeper shift is about how we relate to

submission as an audience.

OF COMFORT, CONTROL AND WHERE ATTENTION IS NON-

NEGOTIABLE

Streaming, primarily, offers control. You can pause for a

snack. Rewind an unclear line. Watch while folding laundry.

Watch while scrolling. It turns films into something that

can be fitted around life, rather than something life briefly

fits around. And for many people, that is a relief. It meets

us where we are: busy, overstimulated, and protective of

our energy.

But there is a cost to control. When nothing requires your full

attention, you gradually forget how to give it.

A cinema trip is not only about a bigger screen, it is a social

ritual. There is the dark room, the shared silence, the sense

that you have entered a space where your usual life is

temporarily suspended. Laughter spreads. Tension tightens

the room. Silence becomes collective.

The point is not that rituals are mystical, but that they organise

meaning and attention. In that light, the cinema is a modern

ritual of watching, a place where we practise being present

together. This is why so many defences of cinemas return to

the communal atmosphere; the cinema is not simply a delivery

method for content, it is an event that people share.

But streaming has not eliminated communal viewing entirely.

It has relocated it. Group chats, watch parties, meme

culture—these are social practices too. A film can become a

shared cultural moment without ever being seen in a theatre.

But there is still a difference between social commentary

and shared attention. Reacting together is not the same as

watching together.

HOW CHOICE RESHAPES TASTE

One of the most unsettling changes of the streaming era is

the slow flattening of decision-making. When a film is an

event, you tend to pick with intention. But when a film is

one tile in an endless grid, the selection process starts to

resemble snacking. You sample. You abandon. You chase the

next thing before the first has settled.

This changes taste. Not because people suddenly become

less intelligent, but because the environment rewards

different behaviours. Algorithms do not only recommend

what you like, they shape what you think liking feels like.

If your viewing habits are formed by constant choice and

constant escape routes, then slow, quiet, challenging films

can begin to feel “wrong”, not because they are bad, but

because they demand the one thing streaming trains us to

avoid: patience.

This leads to a larger concern. Cinemas increasingly rely on

large franchises, while quieter, mid-budget or adult-focused

films move straight to streaming. Cinema does not disappear,

but it specialises. It becomes a place mainly for spectacle.

Here is a more niche way to think about it: streaming has

made films more like literature, and cinemas more like theatre.

Everyday films become domestic, and the cinema becomes

reserved for nights that people want to feel like occasions.

In that sense, the future of cinemas might not be “competing”

with streaming on convenience. It might be leaning into what

streaming cannot do: build a shared public moment. Some

recent commentary on “saving cinema” suggests exactly

this, that cinemas could thrive by emphasising communal

energy and event-like experiences.

And that brings us back to the hum in the dark room. The

feeling of being one person in a crowd, watching the same

screen, reacting together, without distraction or performance.

THE RADICAL ACT OF PAYING ATTENTION

The real question is what kind of relationship you want with

stories. Do you want art to fit around your life, or do you

want to occasionally fit your life around art?

Perhaps the healthiest stance is not a verdict but a practice:

stream intentionally, and still go to the cinema sometimes.

Not because you must, but because it trains a muscle that

modern life quietly weakens. The muscle of surrender. Of

shared attention. Of letting a film take you, rather than you

taking only what you want from it.

The cinema still protects patience. It forces you to sit through

the middle of a film. It forces you to live inside scenes that

might otherwise be skipped. It is, in a very practical way, a

defence against our own impatience.

ITS NOT A WAR, BUT A REASSIGNMENT

Streaming has also widened access. It has made film culture

more global and more democratic. That is a genuine gain.

The risk is not that people watch films at home, but that only

a narrow type of film is considered worthy of the big screen.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TECH

GADGET-ASTIC!

6 Tech Gadgets to Look

Forward to in 2026

If you’ve been feeling like the last couple of years were more

“iterative” than exciting, 2026 is shaping up to break that

streak. A handful of companies are finally ready to push

past the usual spec bump and explore new form factors,

interfaces, and ways of interacting with tech.

Let’s break it down.

Steam-Compatible VR (or XR) Headset from Valve

On the VR front, Valve is also working on a new headset that

pairs with its Steam ecosystem. This could make immersive

gaming and virtual experiences more accessible, especially

if it cuts out the need for a high-end PC. For fans of virtual

worlds, creative environments or VR gaming, this could be a

major jump forward.

SAMSUNG GALAXY Z TRIFOLD

Here’s the thing. Foldables are no longer shocking,

so Samsung is trying something bolder. The Z TriFold

opens into a full tablet-sized display that genuinely

feels like two devices in one. Early previews show a

10-inch AMOLED panel and refresh rates that make

it look like a mini-laptop screen in your hand. It

launched in Korea at the end of 2025, but its global

rollout is expected in early 2026.

If you’ve ever wished your phone could stretch just a

little more when watching Netflix or editing photos,

this might be the foldable that finally nails it.

A POSSIBLE FOLDABLE IPHONE

There are growing signs that 2026 might be when

Apple experiments with flexible-display iPhones.

Analysts expect a new iPhone model that rethinks

the form factor, potentially integrating foldable or

foldable-adjacent designs. If Apple does this, it could

push flexible-screen tech mainstream in a way few

devices have before.

APPLE SMART GLASSES

Apple reportedly plans to launch smart glasses in 2026,

aiming for a product that’s lighter and less bulky than a

full XR headset. The design focuses on features many of us

use daily: voice commands, cameras, audio, and possibly

environmental awareness powered by AI.

Instead of full augmented reality overlays, these glasses

look more like a modern, smarter eyeglass, a piece of

wearable tech that could act as a subtle companion to your

phone. With Siri baked in and AI-driven context awareness,

they could hint at what everyday “smart wearables” look

like in the near future.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2026 TECH

STEAM MACHINE

Valve is bringing back the “console

meets PC” concept with Steam Machine,

a compact, plug-and-play gaming box

running on SteamOS, built to drive 4K

gaming at 60 FPS (with support for

modern GPU features like ray-tracing and

fidelity-boosting tech). It’s meant to give

PC-level performance without needing

to assemble a desktop, making high-end

gaming more accessible for living rooms.

LENOVO LEGION PRO ROLLABLE (ROLLABLE-DISPLAY

GAMING LAPTOP)

Lenovo is reportedly prepping a gaming laptop with a

horizontally expanding OLED screen that shifts from a

standard format into an ultrawide 21:9 canvas. The idea:

a portable laptop that expands when you need more

screen, ideal for gaming, video editing, creative work, or

immersive media.

This model, the Legion Pro Rollable, is tipped to debut

around CES 2026. When fully extended, it unlocks extra

display real estate without needing an external monitor.

If you want a powerful, flexible, mobile machine that can

become a “wide-screen” device on demand, this might be

one of the boldest laptops of the year.

THE BIG PICTURE

2026 could mark a turning point: devices that adapt to

our needs instead of expecting us to adjust. Phones that

stretch into tablets. Laptops that widen for immersive work

or play. Glasses that act as discreet wearable assistants.

Consoles and VR systems are built for ease of use. Instead

of incremental upgrades, we may see bold design shifts

and a break from the slab-and-screen norm.
