ARTS TAKE CENTER STAGE
by Jennifer Maragoni
In Folsom, the arts take
center stage. From
intimate plays and
symphonies to curated
art exhibitions and highoctane
live music, Folsom’s
visual and performing
arts venues pulse with
creativity and talent.
“Our vision is to have
Folsom become a leading
city in the Sacramento
region, providing a
broad selection of arts
and cultural experiences
in education and
everyday life,” states the
city’s Master Plan for
Enhancement of the Arts,
created in 2006 and
updated in 2018.
Whether you’re captivated
by live plays, moved by
symphonies, inspired by
artwork hanging in local
cafés, or just want to dance,
Folsom has just the ticket.
Harris Center for the Arts
Harris Center for the Arts
The Harris Center for the Arts (harriscenter.net) is the heart of Folsom’s performing arts
community. With three stages and a world-class lineup, it’s a year-round hub for music,
theater, dance, and more. From Broadway tours to student showcases, symphonies to
tribute bands, there’s something for everyone—and there’s not a bad seat in the house.
The venue, which opened its doors in 2011, now hosts a staggering 400-plus public events
annually. The 2025-26 season is in full swing, with an early 2026 lineup that includes Tina:
The Tina Turner Musical, The Ten Tenors, and The Book of Mormon.
Folsom Lake Symphony
As the resident orchestra of the Harris Center and a staple in the community for over 20
years, the Folsom Lake Symphony ( folsomlakesymphony.com) blends big-city brilliance
with small-town charm. From Beethoven to Gershwin, the symphony presents a wide
range of orchestral literature under the direction of Maestro Peter Jaffe. Come February,
the symphony makes your Valentine’s Day plans easy with A Night of Romance, featuring
everything from dramatic overtures to joyful arias. Meanwhile, its community enrichment
programs include a Young Artists Competition and an “instrument petting zoo” for kids.
Folsom Concert Association
Dedicated to bringing exceptional live music to the community, the volunteer-driven
Folsom Concert Association curates a season of performances ranging from global acts to
local stars. Early 2026 shows include The Hitmen of Country and How Sweet It Is, a tribute
to James Taylor, at the Harris Center. The association’s mission is simple yet powerful:
to present a reasonably priced concert series and to foster an appreciation of music
through community outreach efforts, including performances at senior centers, college
scholarships, and refurbished instruments for school-age students in need.

artistic spirit takes form.
Folsom Arts Association
The Folsom Arts Association

and connection. Members range from
seasoned pros to eager beginners, and
you’ll find their work hanging in local
galleries, coffee shops, and city spaces—
all part of FAA’s mission to make art
visible and vibrant throughout Folsom.
Bank of America Gallery
Just inside the Harris Center, the Bank
of America Gallery showcases work
by Folsom Lake College students,
faculty, alumni, and visiting artists. The
rotating exhibits mirror the diversity
of the college community—painting,
photography, sculpture, and more. It’s
a quiet counterpoint to the roar of the
theater next door. For a dose of culture
between curtain calls, the Bank of
America Gallery (harriscenter.net/visit/

intermission. The first exhibition

Powerhouse Pub
If you like your music
loud, Powerhouse Pub
(powerhousepub.com) is a local
hot spot. The energetic venue
keeps Sutter Street alive late
into the night with live bands,
DJs, and karaoke. And if that isn’t
enough, the club has teamed
with the adjacent Scarlett’s
Specialty Bar and Big Rob’s Cigar
& Hookah Cabana to create a
conjoined “maze of bars and
decor.” Whether you’re catching
a favorite band or discovering
a new one, this is Folsom’s

FLC’s Oak Hall
WORLD-CLASS SCIENCE
EDUCATION TAKES ROOT
by Jennifer Maragoni
Large windows into the labs allow
passersby to see science in action. This
“science on display” approach is intended
to spark curiosity and interest in STEM
careers. There is also a 4,000-squarefoot
science center, where students can
access academic support, as well as
numerous gathering spaces designed to
foster a sense of community.
More than just a campus upgrade, Oak
Hall is now the largest science facility in
the Los Rios Community College District
and positions FLC as a regional hub for
scientific learning. For students interested
in biology, chemistry, and health sciences
who once had to trek to Sacramento for
advanced lab courses, Oak Hall brings
cutting-edge education closer to home.
If you’ve driven down East Bidwell Street
over the past couple of years, you’ve likely
noticed a large building sprouting from
the ground at Folsom Lake College. The
school’s striking, two-story science facility
opened its doors this past August, ushering
in a new era of innovation in Folsom.
At 75,000 square feet, Oak Hall isn’t just
a building—it’s a statement about the
future. Careers in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields are in
high demand, and the additional space—
including six biology and six chemistry labs—
enables the college to significantly expand
its science programs.
Oak Hall at Folsom Lake College
Designed by HMC Architects and built
by Otto Construction, Oak Hall merges
form and function. Natural light floods
the hallways, flexible learning spaces
encourage collaboration, and sustainable
features—including all-electric systems
and energy-efficient design—mirror
Folsom’s commitment to environmental
sustainability. The project is seeking
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Silver certification from the
United States Green Building Council.
“This state-of-the-art facility is far more
than just classrooms and labs. It’s a
vibrant hub where students, guided by our
dedicated and expert faculty and staff,
will ignite their passion, unlock their full
potential, and embark on meaningful STEM
careers that will enrich both our community
and the broader region,” said Art Pimentel,
president of Folsom Lake College. “Most
importantly, this building represents our
commitment to providing a high-quality
education that remains accessible and
affordable, ensuring that every student has
the opportunity to succeed.”
Oak Hall at Folsom Lake College
“This will alleviate those backlogs of
students who want to take the science
classes, and really open up a lot of
opportunities for them not only at
Folsom Lake College but to move beyond
and pursue the academic goals that
they’ve identified for themselves,” said
Greg McCormac, FLC vice president of
instruction.

primary care, specialty medicine, and wellness programs all in
one system.
UC Davis Health
UC Davis Health is expanding into Folsom, bringing world-class
academic medicine and cutting-edge research-based care closer
to residents. This expansion underscores Folsom’s position as
a regional hub for innovation in health services. This project is
relocating individual medical offices into one state-of-the-art
medical care clinic—expanding patient services from cardiology
to gynecology and many other specialties.
Marshall
Serving El Dorado County and now strengthening its Folsom
presence, Marshall provides hospital-level expertise and a
wide range of specialty practices, ensuring both residents and
neighboring communities benefit from expanded access to care.
The new medical clinic features same day primary care, walk-in
orthopedics, and family and sports medicine.
The Bottom Line
Health care is more than an amenity—it’s essential infrastructure.
In Folsom, the presence of multiple major health systems
ensures choice, quality, and access, while reinforcing the city’s
role as a hub for wellness in the greater Sacramento region.
Jobs & Workforce Development
Health care organizations are among the region’s
largest employers, offering thousands of jobs that
range from physicians and nurses to administrative
staff, technicians, and support services. The presence
of these major systems also creates opportunities for
workforce partnerships with local schools, colleges,
and training programs—preparing the next generation
of medical professionals right here in Folsom.
Investment in Facilities & Innovation
The ongoing expansion of medical campuses, clinics,
and specialty centers represents millions of dollars
in capital investment. Each project not only improves
access to care, but also supports local construction,
real estate, and service industries. As UC Davis
Health expands its footprint in Folsom, it brings
with it the prestige of an academic medical center
and the potential for future innovation and research
collaborations.
Regional Impact
Because Folsom sits at a central crossroads—
connecting Sacramento, El Dorado Hills, and the
Sierra foothills—its health care sector serves a much
wider population than just city residents. Patients
travel into Folsom for care, boosting the local
economy through secondary spending on dining,
retail, and hospitality.
Building a Healthy Future
As health care continues to expand, it strengthens
Folsom’s identity—not only as a desirable place to live but
also as a strategic hub for regional economic development.
With providers investing in growth and wellness.

SPORTS STARS
by Terry Carroll
Folsom is a proud city and has been for more than
150 years. And like many small towns, they take
their sports—all of them—seriously. From T-ball to
soccer and high school sports of all kinds, there is
always something athletic happening here.
Not surprisingly, Folsom has seen its share of
acclaimed athletes who have gone pro in their
respective sports. Some you may know, and some
you may not. If one thing is certain, however,
these wonderful athletes have earned respect for
their performance, and respect for and from their
hometown.
No doubt there are more coming, but for now,
here a few of our local sports stars.
Jake Browning,
Folsom High School,
Football. Jake was a
standout quarterback for
Folsom High School’s team and still
holds both national and state records
for passing. He went on to play for
the Washington Huskies, setting
more records in college, and led his
team to the national championship
game in 2018. He was drafted by the
Minnesota Vikings and then signed
by the Cincinnati Bengals, where he
is a highly regarded #2 quarterback.
Michele Sechser,
Two-Time
Olympian, Rowing.
Michele began her rowing career
for Capital Crew in Sacramento
County. She began pursuing the
United States National Women’s
Rowing Team after attending
graduate school at the University
of Tulsa and placed 5th with her
partner in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
At the age of 37, she then competed
in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Michele
has won numerous medals in the
sport, including a gold at the
World Cup in Poznan, Poland,
and a silver at the World Rowing
Championships in Račice, Czech
Republic, in 2022.
Jonah Williams,
Folsom High
School, Football.
Another outstanding
Folsom High School
football player, Jonah was recruited
by Alabama Crimson Tide, where
he started and excelled at his
position—earning accolades and
awards, including his selection as a
unanimous All-American in 2018. He
was a first-round draft pick of the
Cincinnati Bengals in 2019 and played
for them from 2019-2023. In 2024, he
signed a two-year contract worth $30
million with the Arizona Cardinals and
is their starting right tackle.
There are quite a few
more, including:
NFL Players
Josiah Deguara, Tight
End, Cardinals
Ryan Rau, Linebacker,
Dolphins
Jordan Richards,
Safety, Patriots and
the Ravens
Virgil Carter,
Quarterback, Browns
and Bengals
NBA Players
Jaylen Wells,
Grizzlies
Jordan Ford, Kings
MLB Players
John Briggs, Cubs
and Indians
Mike Cather, Braves
Spider Jorgensen,
Brooklyn Dodgers and
the NY Giants
Other Sports
John Jones, pro
soccer player
Janae Gonzalez, pro
soccer player
Aspen Ladd, mixed
martial arts
Bob Gitsham,
completed Iron Man
competition 13 times
Folsom has also
turned out quite a
few athletes who
have excelled at the
college level. It’s clear
that while the schools
here always land near
the top for education,
they also know a thing
or two about sports.

Pedal Power
5 FAMILY-FRIENDLY BIKE TRAILS
With over 50 miles of paved multi-use paths, Folsom
is built for bikes. The city’s trail network links lakes,
rivers, historic districts, and natural open space,
making it one of Northern California’s most inviting
cycling destinations. Whether you’re loading the kids
in a trailer, teaching a new rider, or tackling a longer
weekend ride, Folsom has a trail that fits the bill.
Here are five of the most family-friendly rides—
complete with mileage, difficulty ratings, and
highlights to help you plan your next adventure.
1. Folsom Lake Trail
DISTANCE: Up to 6 miles (out and back;
choose your segment)
SURFACE: Paved, with some gravel connectors
DIFFICULTY: Easy
HIGHLIGHTS: Lakeside picnic areas, swimming
access, panoramic views
The Folsom Lake Trail hugs the shoreline with
a mix of shady stretches and wide-open views
of the water. Families love this ride because
it’s flexible—you can pedal just a mile or two
before turning back or keep going to explore
hidden coves and picnic spots. Bring lunch,
skip rocks, or just relax by the water before
heading back.
2. Lake Natoma Trail
DISTANCE: 11-mile loop around the lake
SURFACE: Fully paved, multi-use trail
DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate
HIGHLIGHTS: Shady oak groves, calm water
views, wildlife spotting
The Lake Natoma Trail is a classic family
ride. With minimal elevation change and
plenty of shade, it’s comfortable, even on
warm days. Look for herons, egrets, and
the occasional otter along the shoreline.
Rentals are available at the Nimbus Flat
State Recreation Area, making it easy to
plan a spur-of-the-moment outing.
3. Johnny Cash Trail
DISTANCE: 2.5 miles (connects to longer trails)
SURFACE: Paved, gently rolling terrain
DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate (short hills)
HIGHLIGHTS: Public art, Folsom Prison views,
connection to American River Parkway
Part cycling path, part cultural journey,
the Johnny Cash Trail is lined with art
installations celebrating “The Man in Black.”
Riders will pass near the stone walls of
Folsom Prison—immortalized in Cash’s
music—before linking up with the American
River Parkway. It’s short but packed with
Cyclist’s Checklist
Best time to ride:
Spring & fall for cooler temps
Gear:
Helmets required for riders under 18
Rest stops:
Parks with restrooms at Lake
Natoma, Folsom Lake, and
along the Parkway
Rentals:
Available at Lake Natoma
(kayaks, too, if you want to mix in
some paddling)
character, perfect for older kids who enjoy a
theme with their ride.
4. American River Parkway
(Folsom section)
DISTANCE: Choose your distance—up to 32
miles one way to Sacramento
SURFACE: Paved, wide multi-use trail
DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate, depending on
distance
HIGHLIGHTS: Riverfront parks, picnic areas,
historic bridges
The American River Parkway is the crown jewel
of regional cycling. Starting in Folsom, families
can enjoy shorter stretches—such as the
four-mile ride to Sunrise Recreation Area—or
make a full-day journey toward downtown
Sacramento. Wide paths and numerous
access points make it easy to tailor the ride to
your group.
5. Humbug-Willow Creek Trail
DISTANCE: 3-7 miles, depending on route
SURFACE: Paved and boardwalk sections
DIFFICULTY: Easy
HIGHLIGHTS: Wetlands, wildlife, neighborhood
greenbelts
This trail system winds through wetlands
and open space in the heart of Folsom,
offering a peaceful escape just steps from
neighborhoods. Kids love spotting turtles
sunning on logs and egrets wading in the
shallows. Short, flat, and easy to access, it’s a
perfect after-school or weekend family ride.
Why Families Love Cycling in Folsom
With thoughtfully designed paths, abundant
natural beauty, and safe connections between
neighborhoods, Folsom’s trails are more than
recreation—they’re a way of life. For families,
they offer a chance to connect, explore, and
see the city from a new perspective.

Did You Know?
The City of Folsom was incorporated FOLSOM
in 1946, but the city’s fascinating
HISTORY
history dates back much further.
FUN FACTS
Native American Heritage
Folsom’s history begins with the Southern
Maidu and Nisenan indigenous people
who have long called the area home. The
city’s Nisenan Community Park honors the
history of these native people who lived in
harmony with the land.
Gold-Plated History
The first gold-seekers, known as 49ers,
rushed to sites along the American River
where the town of Folsom began. The
discovery of gold at John Sutter’s mill in
nearby Coloma attracted prospectors to
the region from around the world, hoping
to strike it rich. African Americans were
among the first to set up a mining camp
now called Black Miners Bar, now under
Lake Natoma. Mining operations spread
throughout the Sierra Nevada, making
the prospect of building a railroad from
Sacramento to Folsom to bring supplies
to miners, and to transport passengers, an
attractive enterprise.
Folsom’s Namesake
Folsom was named after Captain Joseph
Libbey Folsom, who was born in Meredith,
New Hampshire. He graduated from
West Point and arrived in California with
Colonel Stevenson’s 1st Regiment of New
York Volunteers March 6, 1847, to serve as
Quartermaster at San Francisco. When
William Leidesdorff, a San Francisco
businessman and civic leader, died in 1848,
his estate included a 35,000-acre Mexican
land grant east of John Sutter’s land grant.
Capt. Folsom purchased the estate from
the Leidesdorff heirs and hired Theodore
Judah, railway engineer and surveyor, to
lay out the town he called Granite City.
The town site was recorded in Sacramento
County December 28, 1855. Capt. Folsom
died July 19, 1855, and his executors
changed the town name to Folsom.
First Railroad in the West
The influx of gold-seekers sailing into
San Francisco created a demand for
transportation to serve miners in the
mountains. The Sacramento Valley
Railroad was organized by a group of San
Francisco businessmen in 1852. Charles
Lincoln Wilson, who owned a steamship
company, a toll road, and bridges, was the
inspiration. Wilson hired Theodore Judah
to lay out the route of a railroad from
Sacramento to Folsom, 22 miles distant.
In 1855, Capt. Folsom became the second
president of the Sacramento Valley
Railroad. The railroad made its first official
run February 22, 1856. Today, light rail runs
from Sacramento to Folsom on the line
laid out by Judah.
World’s First Long-Distance
Transmission of Electricity
In 1895, the first long-distance transmission
of electricity took place at the Folsom
Powerhouse in 1895. The transmission occurred
over 22 miles from Folsom to Sacramento.
Folsom Dam
Folsom Dam construction began in 1948 and
finished in 1955. The dam ushered in a surge of
growth known as “Folsom’s second Gold Rush.”
Folsom Dam provided flood protection for
Sacramento and hydroelectric power. It also
provided water for domestic, commercial, and
industrial use. The dam project created Folsom
Lake and Lake Natoma. A state park surrounds
both lakes.
Historic Bridges
Folsom is famous for its stunning bridges,
including Rainbow Bridge, which celebrated
its 100th anniversary in 2019; and the historic
Truss Bridge, which transported people, cattle,
and vehicles across the American River and
now serves as a connection for cyclists and
pedestrians from Folsom’s Historic District to
the American River Parkway.
The Lincoln Highway
The Lincoln Highway began as a coast-to-coast
highway in 1913, connecting New York and
California; the old highway went through Folsom
near Beal’s Point and downtown.
The Pony Express
The Pony Express ran from April 1860 to
October 1861 as a 10-day delivery mail
service from Missouri to California. It
employed horse-mounted riders and 150
relay stations with its Western Terminus
located at Folsom’s Assay Office.

By Plane
Folsom is just a 40-minute drive from
Sacramento International Airport
(SMF), offering nonstop flights from
major U.S. cities and easy connections
worldwide. Travelers can grab a rental car
at the airport or use rideshare services
for a seamless trip into town. For those
coming from further away, San Francisco
International Airport (SFO) and
Oakland International Airport (OAK)
are about two hours west, making them
great options if you want to combine
your Folsom visit with a Bay Area stop.
By Train
Looking for a relaxing ride into town?
Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor route
connects the Bay Area to Sacramento,
with service into nearby stations just
minutes from Folsom. Once you’re
here, SacRT’s light rail system makes it
easy to travel directly into the heart of
Folsom from downtown Sacramento. It’s
a stress-free way to explore the region
without worrying about traffic or parking.
By Car
For road-trippers, Folsom is perfectly
situated along Highway 50, making it
easy to reach from all directions. From
San Francisco, it’s about a two-hour drive;
from Lake Tahoe, just under 90 minutes.
Driving in offers scenic views of rolling
foothills, rivers, and historic landmarks
along the way. Once you arrive, ample
parking and walkable districts—like
the Folsom Historic District and the
Palladio—make exploring a breeze.
Getting Around
Once in Folsom, getting around is part of the adventure. The city boasts more than 50 miles of paved trails—perfect for biking,
jogging, or leisurely walks. Local bike rentals and trail maps make it easy to see Folsom at your own pace. And for those who prefer
to relax—rideshare, taxis, and hotel shuttles provide quick connections to shopping, dining, and attractions.
INSIDER TIP: No matter how you arrive, be sure to carve out extra time—Folsom is the kind of place where you’ll want to linger,
whether it’s sipping coffee on Sutter Street, paddling on Lake Natoma, or catching a live show at the Harris Center.
