I

just returned from a trip to Scotland that

was epic, even though it only spanned

five days. The reason for the trip (other

than spending time with my 90-yearold,

four-foot-nine mum) was to see my

soccer team St Mirren play in a cup final

against a team, Celtic, with a payroll nearly

20 times ours. We shouldn’t even have been

in the final, and we definitely shouldn’t have

been beating Celtic. But we kicked their butts

3-1 in a game that my brother and I agreed

was the greatest we had enjoyed in our

50-odd years of following the Saints.

The joy I (and every other St Mirren fan)

felt was equal to that of folks around here

watching the Phillies win the 1980 and 2008

World Series or the Eagles winning the Super

Bowl in 2018 and 2025. The only difference is

that the Philly teams weren’t HUGE underdogs

in those contests. It got me thinking

about the hopes, dreams and crushing disappointments

of being a sports fan. And about

the whole idea of gratitude in general.

There was a time when being a Philadelphia

sports fan felt less like a hobby and

more like a test of character. Philadelphia

wasn’t just a city that didn’t win. It was a city

that almost won. Repeatedly. And lost inventively.

Cruelly. Philly didn’t just lose — it lost

in ways that lingered. Joe Carter’s home run

landing somewhere in the collective soul of

the Delaware Valley. The Vet rocking under

the weight of optimism before collapsing

into familiar despair. Fourth-and-26. The

Fog Bowl. The Flyers becoming a traveling

museum exhibit titled “What If?” (But who

cares about hockey? I sure don’t.)

For decades, Philadelphia waited longer

than any other major American sports city to

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

feel what winning really felt like. And that’s

why Philadelphia fans understood the bargain

they were making. Because when you

root for teams that rarely win, you are not

chasing glory. You are chasing meaning.

The Phillies are a perfect example. One

championship in their first 125 years of existence.

One. Entire generations lived and died

without seeing it. The Phillies weren’t just

bad for long stretches — they were the kind

of bad that required effort. Then came 2008.

The rain delay. Brad Lidge’s final pitch. That

frozen moment before the strike call, when

a city held its breath out of habit more than

hope. Then... release.

The celebration that followed wasn’t elegant.

It was primal. It poured into the streets,

down Broad, across bridges, into neighborhoods

that had waited their entire lives for

a single night. Parents cried. Grandparents

cried harder. Kids learned, in real time, that

sports could deliver something other than

disappointment.

That joy did not come from winning

alone. It came from waiting.

The Eagles followed a similar, perhaps

even more tortured, path. A franchise that

specialized in being good enough to hurt

you. NFC Championship games as annual

reminders that progress is not the same as

success. Always relevant. Rarely rewarded.

And then, finally, Super Bowl LII. Not

just a win — but a win delivered in the most

Philadelphia way possible. As underdogs.

With a backup quarterback. With a play so

audacious it felt like fiction.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Because

once you’ve waited that long — once you’ve

paid that price — winning changes you. Philadelphia

fans no longer root from a place of

scarcity. They root from a place of expectation.

The Eagles aren’t a pleasant surprise

anymore. They are supposed to contend. The

Phillies aren’t a novelty act; they’re a payroll-heavy,

ambition-forward franchise that

expects, nay demands, October baseball.

Expectation, while intoxicating, is dangerous.

When winning becomes normal,

it stops being miraculous. The emotional

curve flattens. Philadelphia has crossed

an invisible threshold — from grateful to

demanding.

It will very likely be many, many years

before my beloved St Mirren win again. I’m

okay with that. The crushing disappointments

of losing most of our games on Saturday

afternoons makes these once-in-a-generation

moments all the more magical.

Philly fans, don’t be demanding. Enjoy

(like crazy) the good things when they happen.

But don’t bitch too much when the crap

comes along. And you know it will come.

Whoever you follow, Merry Christmas.

And don’t take anything for granted!

relationship quandaries, matters of

the heart and ethics. If you’d like to

send a query, write to info@exitzero.

us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee

and contemplate the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

My family hosts a party on the Sunday

after the Christmas Parade. It’s a great

time and we exchange Christmas presents.

It enables us to spend the holiday with our

immediate family without guilt. Imagine

my surprise this year when I opened one of

my presents to discover the same gift I gave

my sister last year. This was no cheap bauble

but a beautiful hand-blown bowl from West

End Garage. I was livid. I exploded. In fact,

I credit myself for not throwing eggnog on

her. Of course, my sister feigned innocence

and everyone else ignored me. My husband

reprimanded me then, and later, for being

so reactive. I feel people should be held

accountable. What say you? – Incensed

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to life’s perplexing questions

Dear Incensed

The Answer Lady must agree with

your husband. These holiday blow-ups are

never about a regifted item, but rather some

deeply held resentments. The bowl is simply

the key that unleashes them. You should

remember the old adage that “revenge is a

dish best served cold.” Imagine if you could

have contained yourself, thanked her for

her thoughtful gift and in Christmas 2026

regifted it back to her. For now, to quote

another adage, “fahhgetaboutit.” Go back to

West End Garage and buy yourself special.

Dear Answer Lady

I’m having a dinner party for friends,

and they all seem to have a food issue —

vegetarian, bad reaction to mustard, severe

shellfish allergy. How do I plan dinner? Do

I prepare separate dishes? I had a menu all

planned until the restrictions started coming

in. Plus, I was told to not try to “pair up”

one of my widower friends. He says he’s fine

being alone for now. But then the party is

uneven. What would you do? – Frustrated

Dear Frustrated

The Answer Lady fears you are a bit

inflexible. No, you need not embarrass your

guests with separate dishes. Plan a menu

that is more accommodating. Go to the

Cheese Shop for a cheese and fruit platter to

start off. Sunset Liquors will help you pair a

nice wine. For dinner, offer a meat course,

but bookend it with spinach lasagna. And

invite whoever you want. Let the chips fall.

Winter means owls. Those species

that breed locally are getting

vocal, reestablishing their

pair bonds. In addition, several

northern species winter

locally And one, the great Snowy Owl, can be

counted upon to make an annual appearance

somewhere along our coast. It’s all about the

food. If the birds find a surfeit of prey, they

stay, if not they wander.

As for local breeders, Great-horned Owls

begin getting vocal in early December. These

mostly woodland birds are fond of sitting

on woodland edges overlooking salt marsh

around dusk. There, male-females duets use

the classic hoot: Who, who who, who... hoohoohoo.

Males, with lower-pitched hoots, commonly

initiate the sequence. The birds are incubating

eggs as early as February and as birds that

do not build their own nests, they appropriate

almost any elevated platform — deer stands,

duck blinds, Osprey nests.

Another owl to listen for is Eastern

Screech-Owl, whose whinnying call is often

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

given just before dawn. The monkey-faced

Barn Owl is also resident but almost strictly

nocturnal, sallying out over open marsh in

search of rodents. Ghostly white below, the

birds are often mistaken for Snowy Owls.

Beaches are the bird’s favored haunts of these

Arctic visitors and utility poles and summer

beach houses overlooking open stretches of

beach are particularly favored.

Stone Harbor Point and Wildwood Crest

are local hotspots. Finding Snowy Owls is a

simple matter of scanning for soot-speckled

snowmen seated on the upper beach or atop

some elevated point. Other beach birds like

gulls and harriers often disclose the location

of owls by diving repeatedly on their hunched

form. It also pays to scan stretches of beach,

curiously devoid of gulls.

Snowy Owls do a good deal of sitting.

Their survival strategy relies upon conserving

energy. For this reason, it is a good practice

to give Snowy Owls a wide berth. Flushing

an owl is considered poor etiquette. Don’t

let your interest in getting a thumbs-up-worthy

Facebook post get the better (or worst?)

of you. When the owl fixes its eyes on you

and stares, you are too close. Your next step

should be a step backwards. And resist the

temptation to disclose the location of owls to

friends. If you tell just one person about the

location of a roosting owl, be assured that in

three days a hundred people will know where

it used to be, because the hard-pressed bird

was forced to find a less-contested place.

Animals have always been part of the

magic of Christmas, from the sheep

who first heard the tidings, to the

cattle gathered around the manger.

Legends grew up around them —

because a stork plucked out her feathers to line

the manger, storks get to deliver babies. Donkeys,

like the one who carried Mary, gained

healing powers — you can apparently cure a

child of whooping cough by passing him under

a donkey three times. The snake, still getting

the blame for that apple, is said to be the only

animal that doesn’t kneel on Christmas Eve,

though the lack of knees may play a part.

Depending on where you live, Santa may

be helped by eight reindeer, six kangaroos,

one white horse or the Yule goat. Animals

speak on Christmas Eve, but only the pure of

heart can hear them. Bees hum a psalm, but

others cause mischief. There’s a French tale

of a mistreated dog and cat who told burglars

where their miserly owner kept her money.

The Mari Lwyd, a skeleton horse that accompanies

Welsh wassailers, delivers demands

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there and enjoying this island

for hospitality in rhyme. The Yule cat doesn’t

speak, but will eat you if you don’t wear new

clothes.

There’s something magical about

non-mythical animals, too. We all like videos

of kittens in Christmas trees and dogs discovering

snow, but nothing beats the magic of

the zoo. In winter, crowds are thinner, smells

are less pungent and things are quieter. Listen

for a snow leopard’s “roar,” which sounds

like sawing wood. Watch the red pandas play.

Check out the two litters of capybaras. Duck

into the Reptile and Amphibian House if

you need to warm up. The Cape May County

Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos

and Aquariums, which means it meets a high

standard of care for animals and conservation

efforts. You can support those efforts by

contributing to the Penguin & Flamingo Habitat

Campaign, designed to build world-class

habitats for Humboldt penguins and Chilean

flamingos. These “ambassadors for global

conservation” can educate visitors about

habitat loss. Or, you can adopt an animal and

receive a furry facsimile to cuddle. Visit capemaycountynj.gov

for more information.

Admission and parking are free at

the Cape May County Zoo. Donations are

encouraged. The regular winter hours are 10

to 3:30, but they close at 2:30 on Christmas

Eve and New Year’s Eve, and the zoo is closed

on Christmas Day. The main entrance is currently

closed, so use the South Dennis Road

entrance. Bundle up and wear good walking

shoes.

Merry Christmas and Joyous

Kwanza to all y’all who celebrate,

and Hanukkah has just passed.

All these holidays can only mean

one thing! After the big meal, let’s

go to the movies or stream something! It’s

not lost on me that more of us are streaming.

Heck, did you hear the Oscars will start

streaming exclusively on YouTube in 2029?

Crazy. So let’s take a look at what you can

watch now before grandpop starts dozing on

the recliner. Hey, it happens!

Going to the theater? Zootopia 2 is pleasing

critics and audiences alike on Rotten

Tomatoes! Many say it’s better and less scary

(for kids) than the first. I have to argue that

the first one was much better.

Another animated film, David, is getting

some favorable first reviews on RT and is PG,

so it’s good for kids. Audiences seem to be

enjoying the film with mostly high scores and

a few way thumbs down.

In streaming, there’s a new Amazon

Prime movie called Merv about a dog who’s

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

depressed because his mom and dad (Zooey

Deschanel and Charlie Cox) split up. It’s getting

trashed on RT, but I really liked it. Wake

Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is receiving

better scores than the second installment in

the trilogy. The second wasn’t my cup of tea.

I’m interested to see the new film.

Ted Danson’s A Man on the Inside has a

second season. The first episode was outstanding.

A new season of The Floor, the trivia

game show hosted by Rob Lowe, is about to

wrap up. Totally fun.

One movie getting Oscar buzz was

released a while ago — and you can only

stream it now. Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician

Scheme is as quirky as Wes Anderson gets but

with maybe a little more soundness. It was

cool, less out in left field like a lot of his more

recent films.

In Memoriam: Last week, we lost actor/

director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele in

a brutal act. When you look at the long list of

films he directed, you can’t help but see a very

diverse offering. What was your favorite? For

me, it’s Misery (1990), but I know Princess

Bride (1987) is on many people’s classics list.

Still others love When Harry Met Sally (1989)

or This is Spinal Tap (1984) the best. There

are plenty of others worth noting, so what is

your favorite?

And what are you watching with the fam?

Yeah, I’m being nosy, but that’s what makes

the holidays sparkle! Email flixyoumissed@

gmail.com.
