Beautiful Iris in Truro

Hello & welcome!

Welcome to the first issue of 2026 - and congratulations

on making it through 2025. A new year always invites

reflection: what we learned, what we achieved, and where

life stretched us. The Chinese teach that water is the most

powerful element because it is completely non-resistant. It

shapes mountains simply by flowing.

This year, I find myself asking: how gently can I flow?

Looking back, most of my resistance came from emotion

- those quick, human reactions to comments, situations, or

fears. Someone once told me, “go with the flow,” and only

now do I truly understand it. When something triggers us,

we can pause, breathe, and ask: Is this worth my peace?

Can I see another perspective? Can I let it be?

Working with the homeless has shown me extraordinary

resilience. Even at breaking point, many still rise each day

with courage. Life’s hardest moments aren’t punishments;

they are invitations - quiet blessings guiding us towards

something more meaningful, just as water moves around a

boulder with grace.

As part of my own journey, we are launching Community

Together Wellbeing, and in this issue we begin 2026

with a feature on wellbeing (p13). I hope it supports you

wherever you are on your path. Your thoughts, ideas, and

encouragement are always welcome.

Wishing you peace, strength, and love to share.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Your smile deserves

daily care

Maintaining good oral health is an essential part

of overall wellbeing, yet it is often overlooked in

daily routines.

Regular dental care helps prevent a wide range

of issues, from tooth decay and gum disease to

more serious infections that can affect general

health. When someone commits to consistent

brushing, flossing, and routine check-ups, they

are investing in long-term comfort, confidence,

and quality of life.

Dentists emphasise that prevention is far more

effective than treatment. Simple habits, carried

out twice a day, remove plaque before it

hardens and causes damage. Regular professional

check-ups also allow early detection of problems

- meaning small concerns can be addressed

quickly, before they become painful or costly.

Beyond the medical benefits, caring for teeth has

a positive impact on everyday life. A healthy smile

supports clear speech, comfortable eating, and

greater self-esteem. Research increasingly links

oral health with wider physical health, suggesting

that gum disease may influence conditions such

as heart disease and diabetes.

For children, establishing these habits early

lays the foundation for a lifetime of good oral

health. For adults, maintaining them ensures

teeth remain strong and functional well into later

years.

Consistent, thoughtful dental care is a simple yet

powerful act of self-care that benefits the whole

body.

COMMUNITY NEWS

A celebration of

art, unity, and

community spirit

In February 2026, Beaconsfield Old

Town in Buckinghamshire will unveil a

vibrant new attraction: the Beaconsfield

Mosaic Trail - a joyful celebration of

history, creativity, and the power of

community coming together. Designed

to connect residents of all ages, the

trail links three new community-created

mosaics with much-loved existing

artworks across the Old Town’s historic

streets.

At the heart of the project is a simple,

beautiful idea: that art can be created with

a community, not simply for it. Hundreds of

residents - children, families, artists, volunteers,

and local groups - contributed personal

messages, patterns, and tiles, each expressing

a shared theme: we are one, and when we

work together, we create something far greater

than ourselves.

The trail features three new mosaics.

Maud Milton’s Tree of Life at the Fitzwilliams

Centre symbolises unity across all faiths and

the interconnectedness of community life.

Over 250 people contributed decorated tiles,

embedding their own stories in the artwork.

The Peacock Butterfly, created by the entire

Girlguiding community under the guidance

of Melanie Mosaics, celebrates colour, nature,

and transformation, while encouraging

visitors to explore Holtspur Nature Reserve.

The third piece, The Stagecoach, crafted by

Maud Milton, honours Beaconsfield’s historic

role as a 1700s coaching stop and includes

contributions from Bucks Vision.

The trail also highlights existing mosaics

and landmarks - including Maggy Howarth’s

iconic pebble mosaics, the War Memorial,

and the Town Crier Plaque - offering residents

and visitors a fresh way to rediscover the Old

Town.

More than an art trail, this project is a reminder

that when a community collaborates with love,

harmony, and shared purpose, it creates beauty

that lasts an inspiration to other towns, cities

and communities.

TRAVEL

Winter SUN and SKI!

Two ways to escape....

When winter settles in and the days turn

inward, many travellers feel the pull towards

warmth, light, and landscapes that promise

renewal. This year, the secret to shaking off

the grey lies not in long-haul flights, but

in hand-picked destinations that offer either

unexpected winter sun or snow-covered

serenity - all within easy reach of the UK.

Whether you crave golden light or alpine air,

these refined escapes deliver it beautifully.

The winter sun secret:

unexpected sunshine escapes

For those longing for Vitamin D, bright blue skies,

and a sense of space, three short-haul gems offer

the perfect seasonal lift.

La Gomera, Canary Islands – the quiet island

that restores you

A world away from the bustle of Tenerife and

Gran Canaria, La Gomera is an island of deep

ravines, laurel forests, and cliff-top trails that

reward the soul as much as the body. Reached via

a short ferry from Tenerife South, it feels blissfully

untouched.

Why go: Reliable winter warmth (18–21°C), low

rainfall, and peaceful walking routes make it ideal

for nature-first travellers.

Best for: Active couples, hikers, and anyone

seeking tranquillity wrapped in sunshine.

Morocco - colour,

culture, and winter

warmth

From Cornwall, the

easiest way to reach

Marrakech is via

Bristol, with regular

direct flights that

bring you to Morocco

in under four hours.

It’s an instant shift

from winter grey to warm light, vivid colours and

the gentle bustle of the souks.

Why go: With 18–20°C winter days, you can

explore the Medina, browse colourful markets

and enjoy rooftop dining without the summer

heat.

Best for: Food lovers, culture seekers and

travellers wanting an immersive, atmospheric

escape close to home.

Seville, Spain -

Europe’s warmest

winter city

A southern jewel of

Andalusia, Seville

delivers soft sunlight,

elegant boulevards,

and Moorish palaces

wrapped in citrus

perfume.

Why go: Expect blue skies and temperatures of

17-19°C - perfect for tapas lunches, garden strolls,

and unhurried exploration.

Best for: City breakers, architecture fans, and

those who enjoy slow, sunlit afternoons.

GARDENING

Winter wellness:

Essential care for plants and plots

In parts of the UK, winter offers short

windows of opportunity for crucial

garden preparation. Here are six simple

tasks to tackle in January and February

to help your garden burst back to life in

spring.

1. Start chitting early potato varieties.

Place seed potatoes in egg cartons or

shallow trays with the eyes facing up. Keep

them in a light, frost-free spot so they can

develop sturdy green shoots before planting

in early spring.

2. Prune Wisteria for summer flowers.

Carry out the essential second-stage winter

prune. Cut all lateral side shoots back to just

2–3 buds from the main stem. This helps the

plant focus its energy on producing strong

flowering spurs later in the year.

3. Inspect stored tubers and bulbs.

Check stored dahlia tubers, cannas, and gladioli

for signs of rot, mould, or pest damage. Remove

affected parts immediately and lightly mist any

tubers starting to shrivel to stop them drying out.

4. Sow slow-growing annuals indoors.

Get ahead for summer by sowing slowgrowing,

half-hardy annuals (like Begonias,

Geraniums, and Lobelia) in trays indoors.

They need a long growing season and will be

ready for pricking out in early spring.

5. Deep clean bird feeders and bird baths.

Clean all feeding stations and water baths

weekly with a mild disinfectant. This keeps birds

healthy and prevents the build-up of bacteria

such as salmonella.

6. Rake and tackle lawn moss.

On a dry, frost-free day, use a spring-tine rake

to pull out lawn moss and thatch. This improves

airflow to the roots and prepares the ground for

a winter moss-killer treatment.

WELLBEING

Exploring new paths to wellbeing in 2026

As 2026 begins, many people feel a

gentle pull towards change - not the

pressured resolutions of the past, but

a more authentic desire to feel alive,

connected and grounded again.

Increasingly, people are discovering that

wellbeing isn’t a single destination but

away from daily worries, and into a life

that feels more joyful and intentional.

Across the community, residents are

exploring a rich variety of ways to

reconnect with themselves and improve

their wellbeing. Wild water swimming

a natural reset that boosts the immune

system and sharpens mental clarity.

Creativity is also playing a powerful

role, with pottery, painting and craft

through volunteering, discovering that

giving time to others brings a renewed

sense of purpose, gratitude and connection.

Being in nature remains one of the

simplest and most effective healers.

Gardening, community growing projects

and mindful walks help people slow

down, breathe more deeply and reconnect

with the rhythm of the seasons. Spiritual

practices are also becoming more

mainstream, with journaling, meditation

WELLBEING

Dry 2026: choosing

clarity, courage & a

new relationship with

alcohol

For many people, alcohol is woven into the

backdrop of everyday life - dinners out,

celebrations, the end of a long week. We

drink to relax, to unwind, to let our hair down,

and sometimes to release the inhibitions that

keep us tightly bound through the pressures

of daily living.

In moderation, alcohol can feel harmless. But for

others, it becomes something more — a coping

mechanism, a crutch, or a way to soften pain we

haven’t yet found the words for. When drinking shifts

from occasional pleasure to emotional support, it

can quietly take us down a slippery slope.

Dry 2026 isn’t about strict rules or guilt. It’s about

awareness. It’s about understanding why we drink,

and what happens internally that leads us to

reach for the glass.

Many people notice patterns when they pause

and reflect:

What time of day do you crave a drink?

What emotion tends to arrive first - stress,

loneliness, boredom, overwhelm?

Does alcohol help you avoid looking in the

inner mirror?

Journalling can be a powerful first step - a simple

way to capture triggers, thoughts, and emotional

responses without judgement. It often takes

maturity, courage, and one-pointedness to admit

two things:

I might be drinking more than I want to.

I’m ready to do something about it.

This path always begins with understanding the

root cause - and that isn’t easy. But support is

available, and many people in Truro offer safe,

professional ways to explore emotional patterns,

heal old wounds, and build new habits that feel

empowering rather than restrictive.

COMMUNITY WELLBEING NEWS

Finding creative joy

in nature

Living in Cornwall offers something truly

special: a landscape so beautiful that inspiration

sits quietly at every turn, waiting to be noticed.

For many residents, finding joy isn’t about

grand gestures but simple, creative acts that

open the heart, spark imagination and make

the community just a little brighter.

One of the easiest ways to begin is through

small acts of service. A simple litter-picking

stick, costing between £1 and £3 online, can

become a tool for both mindfulness and

impact. Walking along the shoreline, a favourite

footpath or a quiet Truro street while picking

up litter creates an immediate sense of

contribution. It’s gentle, grounding and

surprisingly uplifting - proof that tiny efforts

can shape a cleaner, kinder environment.

Creativity, too,

can be woven

into everyday

life. Cornwall’s

beaches are

scattered with

smooth pebbles

perfect for

collecting

and painting.

Families and

friends can

gather around

a kitchen table

and bring these stones to life with bright

colours, patterns or positive messages. After

painting your creations, you might gently

leave these small sparks of joy somewhere

for someone to find - a simple way to brighten

a stranger’s day and share a moment of

kindness without ever meeting. Pinterest

offers endless ideas, from mandala designs

to cheerful creatures, with projects that suit

all ages and abilities.

For those drawn to the outdoors, taking

a sketchbook and a small travel set of

watercolours can transform an ordinary

walk into a moment of artistic connection.

Whether sitting beside the Truro River, at

Boscawen Park, watching tide patterns at

Loe Beach or pausing in Victoria Gardens,

capturing a simple scene - no matter

how imperfect - nurtures confidence and

presence.

There are countless other ways to blend

creativity with wellbeing. Residents might

try making their own driftwood decorations,

pressing wildflowers found on local walks, or

joining a community art group in Truro. Nature

photography is another accessible option:

using a phone to capture morning light over

Malpas, birdlife along the river, or colourful

harbour scenes in Falmouth.

What matters most is the intention - to look

more closely, feel more deeply and contribute

more generously. In Cornwall, joy is never

far away; sometimes it simply begins with

noticing.

COMMUNITY NEWS

What it truly means

to be a Scout

Being a Scout is far more than learning

outdoor skills - it’s a journey that builds

character, confidence, and community.

For young people aged 5 to 14 in Truro and

the surrounding areas, 18th Truro Scouts

offers a place to grow, make friends, take

on new challenges, and discover their

strengths. Through teamwork, problemsolving,

and adventure, our young people

develop resilience, leadership, and a sense

of responsibility for others and the world

around them.

These experiences stay with them for life.

From cooking outdoors to navigating with

a map and compass, Scouts gain practical

skills – but they also learn compassion,

courage, and perseverance. Every camp,

badge, hike, and challenge helps them

build independence and self-belief that

supports them in school, friendships,

and beyond.

But we can only continue offering these

opportunities with the support of our

community.

This year, 18th Truro Scout Group missed

out on vital fundraising when we were unable

to secure a stall at the Christmas Market,

leaving our budget for equipment, activities,

and future adventures under real strain.

We urgently need volunteers - could

you help?

Whether you can give an hour a week or just

occasional support, every bit makes a huge

difference. You don’t need special skills, just

enthusiasm and a willingness to help young

people thrive.

If volunteering isn’t possible, donations

or sponsorship are also incredibly valuable

and go directly towards providing adventures

that build confidence and shape young lives.

The 18th Truro Scout Group warmly

invites the community to get involved so

that every young person can continue

to enjoy the friendships, challenges, and

unforgettable experiences that Scouting

brings.

Together, we can keep the adventure

going.

Please contact: Matthew

(gsl@18thtruro.org.uk) or Steph

(bsl@18thtruro.org.uk) our joint lead

CITIZENS ADVICE

Lasting Power

of Attorney

Appointing lasting power of attorney (LPA)

means nominating someone to act on your

behalf and manage your finances, care or

treatment, if you lose mental capacity.

Setting up an LPA doesn’t mean you’re expecting

anything to happen, it’s something you might want to

do in case something happens in future.

There are two types of LPA, property and financial

affairs and health and welfare. You don’t have to

make both types at the same time but you must

make an LPA while still capable of making decisions

yourself (having mental capacity). Both must be

registered and you should choose who manages your

affairs for you very carefully.

A property and financial affairs LPA gives someone

authority to make decisions like buying or selling

property, bank and other financial accounts, benefits

and debts. You can give someone power of attorney

to deal with all of those affairs, or only certain things.

A health and welfare LPA gives someone authority

to make decisions about things like where you live,

day-to-day care, and healthcare treatment - either for

Toddler Time

Every Tuesday, 10.30

all aspects of your welfare, or only certain things. It’s

not possible to use a health and welfare LPA until the

person who made it has lost mental capacity.

You can make an LPA online at gov.uk or by

downloading the forms from gov.uk. If you want

someone to look after both aspects, you’ll need

two separate LPAs.

Once completed, you’ll need to register the LPA

by sending the forms to the Office of the Public

Guardian. If there are no objections, the Public

Guardian must register it. This can take around 20

weeks.

The Public Guardian must notify you and your

attorneys they have registered the LPA, and it can

then be used. You can find information on LPAs by

visiting the Citizens Advice website.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Casting a lifeline for Cornwall’s fishing

community

A new initiative by Citizens Advice

Cornwall and Cornwall Rural Community

Charity (CRCC) is taking money and

benefits advice to ports and harbours

across the county to tackle financial

instability, fluctuating income and social

isolation faced by people in the fishing

industry and their families.

Cornwall’s fishing community is the beating

heart of the county’s coastal heritage — yet

behind the hard graft and proud tradition,

many fishermen face unseen challenges with

their income.

The new government-funded collaboration,

called Net Savings, is a pioneering project

providing tailored budget management and

debt support for commercial fishermen at

ports across Cornwall.

For many fishermen, income rises and falls

with the tides. Weather conditions, fuel costs,

market prices, and shifting regulations can

all impact earnings from one week to the

next. That unpredictability makes budgeting

difficult - and when debt mounts, cultural and

practical barriers can make it even harder to

seek help.

Isolation adds to the problem. Long working

hours, time at sea, and a strong sense of

independence mean many fishermen are

reluctant to approach traditional financial

advice services. Others may lack the

confidence or digital skills to navigate

online tools and resources.

Recognising these challenges, Net Savings

offers a bespoke programme of advice,

training, and one-to-one support.

Running to March 2026, the project will

deliver drop-in debt advice sessions and

group workshops in Newquay, Looe,

Mevagissey and Newlyn covering budgeting,

managing variable income, and using

digital tools to access financial support

and benefits.

Alongside direct advice, participants will

help identify barriers preventing fishermen

seeking debt support - from stigma and

trust issues to connectivity and digital access.

These findings will guide the development

of new technological and service solutions,

ensuring future support is more accessible

and culturally sensitive.

one-to-one appointment, email:

EDUCATION

Huge news for

Penzance

PZN Youth has officially secured its own

permanent building - a safe, welcoming

space for young people aged 11–17.

The organisation was delighted to receive grant

funding totalling £30,000 from the Emily Bolitho

Trust Fund and the Community Fund, support

that played a crucial role in bringing this project

to life.

PZN Youth Director, Bek Brewslaw, shared her

appreciation:

“Cornwall Community Foundation has been with

us from the very beginning. The Emily Bolitho

Fund offered £20,000 and the CCF Community

Fund added £10,000 - support that made this

dream finally feel possible.”

PZN Youth and Bek Brewslaw

Warm congratulations go to Bek and the

entire PZN Youth team. This new space

marks a significant milestone and will transform

opportunities for young people across Penzance.

The future looks incredibly bright for the

community they serve.

New Head at Polwhele

Polwhele House School has announced the

appointment of Mark Clutsom as its new

Head of School. With over 20 years of school

leadership experience, including roles as

Executive Head across multiple settings,

he brings a proven track record in school

improvement, innovation and communityfocused

education.

Mr Clutsom is already well known within the

Polwhele community, having taught pupils in

Years 3 to 9 across History, Humanities and IT

over the past year. He has also led football and

woodwork clubs and, in his most recent role as

IT Lead, introduced a new digital strategy for the

school. He expressed pride in the appointment

and enthusiasm for leading a dedicated and

talented team.

This announcement comes during a period of

strong momentum for Polwhele House. Since

moving to new ownership in 2025, the school

has invested significantly in facilities, curriculum

development and long-term planning. All profits

continue to be reinvested directly into the school,

and an ISI inspection in early 2025 rated Polwhele

highly across all areas.

The Polwhele Nursery also continues to thrive,

currently operating at full capacity with a

growing waiting list. To meet local demand,

nursery provision will expand from January

2026, enabling more families to access its

nurturing early years environment.

The school remains committed to its core values

of kindness, respect, courage, resilience and

creativity as it prepares its first GCSE cohort for

examinations in 2027. The Senior Leadership

Team - Amber Marsh, Rose Sullivan and Olivia

Cole - continues unchanged, providing stability

during this exciting phase of growth.

EDUCATION

Walking in the footsteps

of history: students

explore life in WWI

Amersham School students in Buckinghamshire

took part in an immersive World War One

experience designed to deepen their

understanding of the past while building

essential Amersham CIRCLESkills.

The day blended hands-on activities with real

historical insight, helping students strengthen

communication, teamwork, research abilities, and

effective self-management.

The programme began with a medical workshop

based on local soldiers from Amersham who served

in the Great War. Students examined genuine

case studies, researched common injuries, and

worked collaboratively to design treatment plans -

an exercise that encouraged organisation,

problem-solving, and confident participation.

Students then explored wartime propaganda, analysing

posters, speeches, and newspaper extracts to understand

why so many men felt compelled to enlist. This session

developed their critical thinking and communication

skills as they shared interpretations and evaluated

how messaging shaped public opinion.

A further activity focused on war poetry, allowing

students to explore how poets expressed trauma,

bravery, and the emotional impact of conflict Through

close reading and discussion, they strengthened

empathy and interpersonal skills while gaining a

richer appreciation of historical voices.

The highlight of the day was a workshop with

Frontline Living History. Authentic artefacts, uniforms,

and trench stories brought the era vividly to life,

giving students the opportunity to ask questions,

investigate, and engage in meaningful discussion.

This enriching experience not only broadened

historical understanding but also provided valuable

opportunities to practise key skills that will support

students in school and beyond.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Truro Loops:

Boscawen - Newham

Bridge update

The long-awaited bridge linking

Boscawen Park to Newham remains

a live and vital project, despite recent

setbacks.

Earlier in 2025, the Truro Town Deal Board

confirmed that rising construction costs

had made the original lifting-bridge design

unaffordable within the current grant

allocation. As a result, the initial planning

application was withdrawn.

A revised, more cost-effective swing bridge

design is now being prepared and will

form part of a new planning submission once

approved by the Town Deal Board, expected

later this month. Although no date has been

set for the next Planning Committee or

consultation period, public backing continues

to play a crucial role in keeping the scheme

moving forward.

Over 600 positive comments have already

been recorded, describing the project as

“a must for Truro” and “good for residents

and visitors.” Supporters are urged to stay

engaged, ready to comment again when the

revised application opens.

Highways have confirmed that the Newham

Road junction’s new diagonal crossing is

safe and classed as permitted development,

separate from the bridge project.

The Truro Loops volunteer team continues

to champion the scheme. They welcome

visitors to the Truro Loops Room (next to the

café in Boscawen Park) every Wednesday,

Friday, and Saturday morning and afternoon,

to share the latest updates and gather

signatures for the public petition.
