Hello and welcome
Welcome to the first issue of 2026.
As we begin a new year, it’s a wonderful moment to
appreciate the small acts of community spirit that
genuinely make Amersham shine. In this issue, you’ll
find some lovely examples - including Amersham Town
Council’s Christmas Tree Recycling Initiative (p9), a
simple but meaningful way to care for our environment
while supporting community projects.
We’re also delighted to share an uplifting piece on the new
Amersham Town Crier and the continued community
gardening partnership with students from Stony Dean
School (p6). It’s inspiring to see young people getting
involved and helping to keep our town looking beautiful.
If you’re still in the festive mood, have a look at the
GXCA Burns Night celebration on page 15 - a chance
to enjoy some fun and tradition close to home.
This issue also marks the launch of Community Together
Wellbeing (p16) alongside our new Health Section from
pages 16–21, focusing on simple ways to support body,
mind and lifestyle.
And if you’re part of a local group, charity or community
organisation, please get in touch with Ani to be featured
on our Amersham Community Sunshine Board.
Wishing you a joyful start to 2026,
With love,
Therese

COMMUNITY NEWS
New town crier
in Amersham
Amersham Town Council were delighted
to introduce Mr Joe Noaman as the newly
appointed Town Crier for Amersham.
Joe made his first official appearance at the
Amersham-on-the-Hill Christmas event in
December, where he opened the festivities
and welcomed the Town Mayor, Cllr Simon
Woodhead, to the stage. Dressed in his striking
traditional regalia, he brought colour, charm, and
a wonderful ceremonial spirit to the occasion.
Many residents will remember seeing him
alongside the vibrant stilt performer, adding
even more joy to the celebrations.
Joe was selected following the Council’s
recruitment call in late 2025 and was warmly
welcomed by the community at his debut event.
He shared how much he enjoyed being part of
the festivities and expressed his enthusiasm for
supporting civic and community occasions across
the town in the year ahead.
Residents also had the opportunity to see Joe
again at the Old Amersham Christmas event later
that same week.
Amersham last had an official Town Crier in 2018,
and it has been a pleasure to see this cherished
tradition return. Though now primarily ceremonial,
the role brings a sense of heritage, celebration,
and community spirit—qualities that Joe has
embraced with great enthusiasm.
Young hands
shaping Amersham
For many years, Amersham Town Council
had been collaborating with Stony Dean
SEN School, and for over a decade they
welcomed a small group of Year 11
pupils each Tuesday for 1–2 hours of
work experience.
This programme
offered the boys
not only practical,
hands-on experience
but also important
life skills that will
support them long
into adulthood.
Their tasks were
wonderfully varied
- from litter picking and bulb planting to bench
refurbishment, weeding and mulch spreading.
The list of ways they contributed to the town was
truly endless.
Most recently, the boys helped refresh a pair of
planters in Old Amersham with winter bedding,
adding a burst of colour and care to the town’s
historic streets.
Partnerships like this bring out the best in a
community. It has been uplifting to see young
people rolling up their sleeves, taking pride in their
environment, and helping to make Amersham a
lovely place to live, work and visit. The Town
Council remains proud to have supported such
meaningful opportunities for the pupils - and grateful
for the positive impact their efforts continue to have
on residents, businesses and visitors alike.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Walking in the
footsteps of history:
students explore
life in WWI
This term, Amersham School
students took part in an immersive
World War One experience designed
to deepen their understanding of
the past while building essential
Amersham CIRCLE Skills.
The day combined hands-on learning
with real historical insight, strengthening
communication, teamwork, research, learning
strategies, and effective self-management.
The programme opened with a medical
workshop centred on local soldiers from
Amersham who served in the Great War. Using
genuine case studies, students investigated
injuries and conditions faced by servicemen
before working collaboratively to design
treatment plans. This activity required
organisation, problem-solving, and confident
team contribution.
Students then explored wartime propaganda
to understand the motivations behind mass
enlistment. Analysing posters, speeches, and
newspaper extracts, they developed their
critical research skills while evaluating how
imagery and messaging shaped public
opinion. Sharing their interpretations with
peers helped refine their communication and
listening skills.
A further session focused on war poetry,
giving students the opportunity to examine
how poets expressed trauma, bravery, and
the emotional impact of conflict. Through
close reading and thoughtful discussion, they
strengthened empathy, interpersonal skills, and
their appreciation for the voices of the First
World War.
The highlight of the day was a dynamic
workshop delivered by Frontline Living
History. With authentic artefacts, uniforms, and
stories from the trenches, students were able
to engage directly with the realities of life on
the front line. Through questioning, discussion,
and hands-on investigation, they demonstrated
curiosity, maturity, and a strong ability to work
collaboratively.
This enriching experience not only broadened
students’ historical understanding but provided
meaningful opportunities to practise skills that
will serve them well in school, future careers,
and life.
Bringing communities together by sharing
thank you to Amersham School for sharing
their day of study.

EDUCATIONAL NEWS
Helping children embrace a growth mindset
The new year brings with it a sense of
fresh beginnings, new pencils, new
projects, and often, new resolutions.
But while adults might focus on fitness or
organisation, the best resolution we can
nurture in children is the courage to make
mistakes.
For many young learners, the desire to “get it
right” can sometimes overshadow the joy of
learning. Yet every error is a clue, a signpost
pointing to progress. Mistakes teach children
to think differently, to problem-solve, and to
persevere when the answer isn’t easy. In fact,
some of the most confident learners are those
who’ve learned that getting it wrong is simply
part of getting it right.
That’s where a growth mindset comes in -
the belief that ability isn’t fixed but can be
developed through effort and practice.
Teachers who nurture this mindset help children
turn “I can’t” into “I can’t yet.” The focus shifts
from being perfect to being persistent, from
fearing failure to embracing challenge.
Parents can do the same at home. Talk openly
about what you find tricky, celebrate effort
rather than outcome, and show that even adults
are always learning.
So, as we move into a new term, let’s make
space for mistakes, because when children
learn to see them as opportunities, confidence
grows, resilience flourishes, and every setback
becomes a step forward.

Driving with confidence
in the dark
For many drivers, the road after dark
can be a challenge. Headlights from
oncoming traffic, glare from wet roads,
and poor visibility can turn even familiar
routes into stressful experiences.
That’s where lenses like EnRoute Pro could help.
These driving lenses are designed specifically
to reduce glare, enhance contrast, and sharpen
visual clarity on the road.
Developed with advanced glare-reducing filters
and optimised contrast enhancement, EnRoute Pro
lenses target one of the most common complaints
among drivers: the blinding effect of high-intensity
headlights. By minimising scattered light and
improving contrast sensitivity, these lenses can help
drivers to detect obstacles, pedestrians, and traffic
signs more quickly and clearly.
EnRoute Pro were originally designed to aid the
visual demands of commercial and long-distance
drivers, but they can also aid drivers who find
driving at night difficult because of headlight
glare. The lenses are available in both single
vision and progressive designs, allowing for clear
and comfortable vision at all distances.
The technology used in EnRoute Pro lenses was
designed with an aim to reduce visual fatigue,
improve reaction time, and ultimately, ensure
safer roads.
Solutions like EnRoute Pro lenses serve as a
reminder that innovation in optics can have
real-world impact - not just in how we see, but
in how safely we move through the world.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Simple health:
mastering the art
of wellbeing
Words by James Griffiths
Good health, in its most fundamental
sense, is a state of being without illness or
injury, and experts insist that individuals
must prioritise this objective. To simplify
the pursuit, three essential numbers
must be optimised: blood pressure,
waist-to-hip ratio, and heart rate recovery.
Keeping all three in the “green” zone
offers a substantial reduction in the risk
of serious illness.
Achieving lasting wellbeing requires consistent
daily investment in behaviour. Professionals advise
minimising the four least healthy behaviours -
physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol,
and poor nutrition. Conversely, one must regularly
invest in the four most healthy behaviours: physical
activity, good nutrition, quality sleep, and nurturing
a strong community. These practices culminate
in the four daily pillars of health: Be Active, Be
Outside in nature, Be Together, and Be Passionate.
The true trick to
sustaining optimal
health lies
not in achieving
perfection, but in
understanding
behaviour change.
An individual’s health
is an exact mirror
of their lifestyle; the
choices and routines
they practice dictate
how they feel and
look. Experts argue
that mastering
health is largely a
matter of mastering
one’s behaviour in
a modern environment that often makes unhealthy
choices readily accessible. The root cause of poor
health is invariably lifestyle, not a lack of specific
supplements.
The social barrier arises when new behaviours
negatively impact one’s social status. The S.C.A.R.F.
framework - Status, Certainty, Autonomy,
Relatedness, and Fairness - helps people assess
and overcome this hurdle. The behavioural barrier
often involves habitual practices, such as seeking
“altered reality” through unhelpful rituals (like
drinking to de-stress), which must be replaced
with more positive habits. Procrastination is also
common, captured by the D.U.S.T. acronym:
when a task is too Difficult, misunderstood,
generates fear, or is too Tedious. In all cases, the
solution is consistent: asking for help to reframe
the challenge and gain necessary support.
Ultimately, consistent small wins, celebrated and
stacked high, will always surpass inconsistent
major changes on the journey to robust wellbeing.
For more details see details
on opposite page
The path to change is often fraught with barriers.

GARDENING
Winter wellness:
Essential care for plants and plots
In parts of the UK, winter offers short
windows of opportunity for crucial
garden preparation. Here are six simple
tasks to tackle in January and February
to help your garden burst back to life in
spring.
1. Start chitting early potato varieties.
Place seed potatoes in egg cartons or
shallow trays with the eyes facing up. Keep
them in a light, frost-free spot so they can
develop sturdy green shoots before planting
in early spring.
2. Prune Wisteria for summer flowers.
Carry out the essential second-stage winter
prune. Cut all lateral side shoots back to just
2–3 buds from the main stem. This helps the
plant focus its energy on producing strong
flowering spurs later in the year.
3. Inspect stored tubers and bulbs.
Check stored dahlia tubers, cannas, and gladioli
for signs of rot, mould, or pest damage. Remove
affected parts immediately and lightly mist any
tubers starting to shrivel to stop them drying out.
4. Sow slow-growing annuals indoors.
Get ahead for summer by sowing slowgrowing,
half-hardy annuals (like Begonias,
Geraniums, and Lobelia) in trays indoors.
They need a long growing season and will be
ready for pricking out in early spring.
5. Deep clean bird feeders and bird baths.
Clean all feeding stations and water baths
weekly with a mild disinfectant. This keeps birds
healthy and prevents the build-up of bacteria
such as salmonella.
6. Rake and tackle lawn moss.
On a dry, frost-free day, use a spring-tine rake
to pull out lawn moss and thatch. This improves
airflow to the roots and prepares the ground for
a winter moss-killer treatment.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Healthy toenails:
early care
Thick, yellow, crumbling toenails are far
more common than most people realise,
yet many sufferers hide the problem for
years.
As a podiatrist working in Harley Street
and Amersham, I regularly see people
whose nails have become painful,
distorted, or infected simply because
they’ve waited too long to seek help.
Toenails can thicken for several reasons.
Sometimes it’s the result of a fungal
infection. In other cases, everyday
footwear is to blame. Shoes that are too
tight, narrow, or allow the foot to slide
forward can repeatedly “tap” the nail,
causing it to harden and grow thicker over
time. Runners and walkers are especially
prone to this type of trauma.
Once a nail has thickened, it won’t
return to its original state, but the situation
can be managed. Keeping the nails
short, filing them regularly and wearing
properly fitted footwear can prevent
further damage. A podiatrist can also
reduce the bulk of the nail in-clinic, making
it more comfortable and less likely to split.
In more advanced cases, nails can curl and
twist into what’s known as a “ram’s horn”
nail. These can be extremely painful and
difficult to cut. While regular reduction
can help, permanent removal under local
anaesthetic is sometimes the best option.
One problem I see almost daily is
ingrown toenails. These occur when
a sharp edge of nail pierces the skin,
often due to uneven cutting. They’re
incredibly uncomfortable and frequently
lead to infection. A simple, conservative
trim is enough for many people, but
recurrent cases may need a small surgical
procedure to prevent regrowth.
Fungal infections remain one of the most
frequent causes of thickened, brittle
or discoloured nails. They often begin
as untreated athlete’s foot, which then
spreads under the nail. Early treatment
with antifungal cream is effective, but once
the nail itself is affected, specialist lacquers
or prescription tablets may be required.
The most important message? Don’t
ignore changes in your toenails. Early
advice can prevent long-term problems
and rule out rare but serious conditions
that occasionally mimic nail disease.

Walking in Gratitude
On Christmas Day 2013, Chalfont St Peter
resident Paul’s wife - a dedicated carer -
went into work to support residents and
colleagues. Partway through her shift, she
began to feel unwell, and the manager
contacted Paul to take her home.
When Paul arrived, he found his wife sitting in the
manager’s office with her head lowered. As she
looked up, she suddenly collapsed.
Her heart had stopped. Thanks to the swift and
skilled actions of the care home staff and paramedics,
her pulse was brought back.
She was rushed to Harefield Hospital, where she
received emergency treatment in the catheter lab
before being placed in an induced coma for seven
days. When she finally woke, her recovery continued
on the ward - a journey that marked the beginning of
a long and emotional road back to health.
Years later, Paul is now taking on a virtual
fitness challenge to raise funds for a charity that
played a vital role in saving his wife’s life. He will be
virtually walking and running the iconic Route 66 -
from E. Adams Street in Chicago to Santa Monica
Pier in California - a total of 2,278 miles.
Please support him as he gives back to those who
gave him so much.

winner with this heartfelt answer. We hope you and your
family enjoy the trip.
If I were given a handful of magic beans this Christmas, I’d
plant them in the richest soil I could find - right in the heart of
my community. I’d hope they’d grow into a great tree whose
branches bear gifts that can’t be wrapped: laughter for those
who’ve forgotten how to smile, warmth for anyone feeling the
cold of loneliness, and courage for those standing at the edge
of new beginnings. Its roots would stretch beneath every
doorstep, quietly weaving people together in kindness and
understanding. And when the wind rustles through its leaves,
it would whisper a simple reminder to us all: that the most
magical things we can grow are hope, love, and one another.

COMMUNITY NEWS
A celebration of
art, unity, and
community spirit
In February 2026, Beaconsfield Old
Town in Buckinghamshire will unveil a
vibrant new attraction: the Beaconsfield
Mosaic Trail - a joyful celebration of
history, creativity, and the power of
community coming together. Designed
to connect residents of all ages, the
trail links three new community-created
mosaics with much-loved existing
artworks across the Old Town’s historic
streets.
At the heart of the project is a simple,
beautiful idea: that art can be created with
a community, not simply for it. Hundreds of
residents - children, families, artists, volunteers,
and local groups - contributed personal
messages, patterns, and tiles, each expressing
a shared theme: we are one, and when we
work together, we create something far greater
than ourselves.
The trail features three new mosaics.
Maud Milton’s Tree of Life at the Fitzwilliams
Centre symbolises unity across all faiths and
the interconnectedness of community life.
Over 250 people contributed decorated tiles,
embedding their own stories in the artwork.
The Peacock Butterfly, created by the entire
Girlguiding community under the guidance
of Melanie Mosaics, celebrates colour, nature,
and transformation, while encouraging
visitors to explore Holtspur Nature Reserve.
The third piece, The Stagecoach, crafted by
Maud Milton, honours Beaconsfield’s historic
role as a 1700s coaching stop and includes
contributions from Bucks Vision.
The trail also highlights existing mosaics
and landmarks - including Maggy Howarth’s
iconic pebble mosaics, the War Memorial,
and the Town Crier Plaque - offering residents
and visitors a fresh way to rediscover the Old
Town.
More than an art trail, this project is a reminder
that when a community collaborates with love,
harmony, and shared purpose, it creates beauty
that lasts an inspiration to other towns, cities
and communities.

The Beaconsfield
Christmas shoe
box appeal for the
elderly
Christmas time can be a difficult time of
year especially for the elderly, from losing
loved ones, maybe being less mobile and
active to feeling forgotten.
This year local resident Jeannette Buckle decided
that she wanted to do something for the elderly in
Beaconsfield, particularly those living alone. So she
launched a shoe box appeal just for the elderly.
Her message touched the hearts and minds of
local people and businesses alike. With various
initiatives and donations of shoe boxes, she has
managed to collect a staggering amount over
200 filled Christmas shoe boxes, brimming with
goodwill and Christmas cheer. These have been
delivered directly to the elderly or shared out at
the various senior citizens lunch clubs, including
the Christmas Day lunch, held at St Teresa’s Parish
Centre.
Jeannette says, ‘I am delighted that this appeal
has resonated with local people and businesses.
I am so proud what Beaconsfield collectively has
achieved for the elderly this Christmas’.
Heart felt thanks to all local residents and
businesses who have supported and donated.
Special thanks to Ashington Page, Morse Funeral
Services, Thirst4Coffee, Rouse & Partners
