January 1 is such a persuasive deadline.

Not Monday. Not “after my birthday.”

Not “when things calm down a bit.”

January 1 carries a ceremonial weight

that practically demands a vow. You

can feel it at about 12:03am, when the fizzy

has gone flat, the room smells faintly of

regret, and someone says, “Right. This year,

I’m actually doing it.”

New Year’s resolutions are not a modern

invention dreamed up by gym owners and

diet plan promoters. The ancient Babylonians

were making promises to their gods

more than 4,000 years ago at the start of each

year, vowing to return borrowed farm equipment

and pay their debts. The Romans followed

suit, dedicating January to Janus — the

two-faced god of beginnings — while promising

improved behavior in the year ahead.

Even then, the idea seems to have been less

about reinvention and more about repair.

In 1816, the great British poet Lord Byron

wrote in his diary on New Year’s Day that he

was resolving to lose weight. He vowed to

restrict himself to vinegar and water, having

been alarmed by his expanding waistline. He

began immediately, stuck to it obsessively,

and shed a significant amount of weight. The

problem is that his resolution helped popularize

what we would now recognize as disordered

eating.

In 1929, Ernest Hemingway resolved on

January 1 to stop binge-drinking after a particularly

punishing holiday season in Paris.

The resolution lasted a matter of weeks.

Hemingway would repeat this New Year’s

resolution multiple times across decades —

sometimes succeeding briefly, oftentimes

not. His letters show a man who believed in

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

the idea of a fresh start, even as he repeatedly

failed to sustain it.

In 1972, heavyweight boxing champion,

and Philly icon, Joe Frazier announced a

New Year’s resolution to retire undefeated

and protect his health. Within months, he

reversed the decision, lured back by lucrative

offers and competitive pride. His subsequent

fights included brutal losses that permanently

damaged his health.

Politicians are especially fond of January

promises — and especially bad at keeping

them. In his New Year’s message of 1977,

President Jimmy Carter publicly resolved

to reduce White House staff excess and

eliminate wasteful spending. By mid-year,

staffing levels had increased, not decreased,

under the pressure of governing realities.

Carter later acknowledged that the resolution

underestimated the complexity of the

office.

Some New Year’s resolutions succeed

quietly and without drama, which is why

they’re so often forgotten. In 1982, David

Bowie resolved to finally get sober after years

of cocaine addiction. Unlike many celebrity

resolutions, this one stuck. Bowie later credited

the psychological power of the calendar

reset — calling the new year a “line in the

sand.” His sobriety marked a profound creative

and personal turning point. It wasn’t

flashy. It didn’t involve a press conference.

But it did endure.

One of the most instructive examples

came from comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who has

spoken about adopting a New Year’s resolution

early in his career to write a joke every

day. He tracked it with a red X on a wall calendar.

The chain, he resolved, must not be

broken. Decades later, Seinfeld credits that

New Year habit — not inspiration — with his

success. The fact that I don’t find Jerry Seinfeld

remotely funny is neither here nor there.

Which brings us, inevitably, back to the

rest of us. The pattern is remarkably consistent

across centuries and social classes

— New Year’s resolutions fail when they

demand instant transformation, moral

purity or public performance. They succeed

when they are narrow, repeatable, boring.

The calendar doesn’t change us. But it

does give us permission to try again.

And maybe that’s enough. After all, if

Byron could survive vinegar, Hemingway

could keep trying and Bowie could draw a

line in the sand, surely the rest of us can survive

January with our dignity mostly intact.

Even if, by February, we’re quietly renegotiating

the deal.

Me? I’m going to steer clear of public pronouncements

(and liquor stores — ha!).

Happy New Year, folks! Your peppy periodical

will be back, as always, right before

Valentine’s Day.

draft beers.

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw bar,

surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus outside

tables for some great people-watching!

The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure. They’re

bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining scene with

Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat pies

have been receiving rave reviews.

hour to enjoy food and drink specials along with live

us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee

and contemplate the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

Every New Year’s Eve, for the past 10

years, my husband and I have hosted a dinner

party for three other couples. Because

of health issues, I could not do it this year

and booked a reservation at Pier House for

my husband and I, explaining to the others

that we would have to pass this year. Imagine

my horror to find out that one of couples

called and added themselves to our party.

When I asked him why he did that, he said,

“Marge and I couldn’t bear to see you ring in

the New Year without your closest friends.

No need to thank me.” It is true that they are

our closest friends. It is also true we planned

a quiet evening together. My husband and I

have remained silent out of fear of offend-

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to life’s perplexing questions

ing them, even though they had no fear of

offending us. Should we go along or make a

stand? — Flummoxed

Dear Flummoxed

The Answer Lady would love to have a

definitive answer, but she does not. If you

feel your evening is ruined by this usurping

of your plans, by all means put on your

big girl pants and tell him how you feel. On

the other hand, maybe their presence will

add to the evening and sharing the ringing

of the New Year will elevate the night. You

might consider asking the other two couples.

Think about how you will feel come

midnight and act accordingly.

Dear Answer Lady

There’s a woman at work that I like very

much. I just don’t know how to ask her out.

Every time I approach her, I lose my nerve.

I thought about texting her but since she’s

right in front of me eight hours a day, that

seems a little cowardly. Surely you can help

me. I guess my greatest fear is that she will

blow me off. — Nervous Ned

Dear Nervous

No guts, no glory, my friend. Start small.

Ask her if she’d like a coffee from Coffee

Tyme. If she says yes, use the opportunity

to have a non-work-related conversation.

Next, invite her to lunch at Fins. Do not text

because you will never know how she really

feels about you by texting. Nuances are lost,

not to mention the all-so-important eye

contact. Cheers, and good luck!

Page 38 EXIT ZERO January 1, 2026

At the stroke of midnight, December

31, all the birds you tallied in the

365 days leading up to that moment

go the way of the old year. From

this moment on, every bird you

tally by sight or sound lays the groundwork

for your 2026 list. It’s just a game, of course,

but birders in Cape May who set their mind

to it should be able to tally over 200 bird species

in 2026. With little effort and a trip to

duck-rich Lake Lily or Bunker Pond, you’ll

tally your first 50 birds with ease. Add the

bird riches of the South Cape May Meadows

and a trip to the Second Avenue Jetty and

you are well on your way to 100 species in

just a single day.

Looking for raptors? Jake’s Landing is

the winter stronghold for hunting harriers,

perched Red-tailed Hawks and in the evening

Great-horned Owls that sit on the dead

cedars north of the landing. But you probably

tallied Great-horned Owl on January 1

as you turned in for bed. If you miss hearing

Great-horned Owl, in January Screech Owls

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

commonly vocalize just before dawn. If you

miss hearing owls, likely the first bird of the

New Year will be Northern Mockingbird,

whose scratchy rattle greets the dawn.

In our household, the first bird of the

New Year defines the year. A good year

begins with The Year of the Great-horned.

A bum one is The Year of the Starling. But

we’ve had lots of different first birds of the

year, including The Year of the Barn Owl and

The Year of the Canada Goose. Sorry, but

birds seen or heard in dreams don’t count

unless you keep a dream list.

New Year? Start a New Bird List. See if

you can tally 100 species per month. It will

enliven evening conversations and make

every robin you see special. Yes, you can see

American Robin every month of the year in

Cape May. All those robins breeding across

the Arctic need to go somewhere in winter.

We find that the Cape May Bird checklist

printed by Cape May Bird Observatory is

a fine way of keeping track of our earnings.

Grouped in the taxonomic order established

by the American Ornithological Society,

using the list will quickly convey the rhyme

and reason for the grouping and ordering of

birds. Why not just group birds in alphabetical

order? Because that would make as little

practical sense as going to the grocery store

and finding avocados, anchovies and AAA

batteries side by same in the same aisle.

Bird families are grouped like produce

and home products. Different aisles.

It’s been go, go, go since Thanksgiving, or

even Halloween. You’ve been busy creating

the magic that makes childhood

memories — shopping, cooking, wrapping.

You’re dressing the kids — and

yourself — for photos, or just to show Aunt

Tillie you appreciate the outfits she sent.

There are places you have to be — school

recitals, family gatherings, work events,

church. You are managing overwhelmed

children while feeling overwhelmed yourself.

You are tired.

There’s an old saying about being tired.

No, not the one that says, “I’ll sleep when

I’m dead,” which is usually said by someone

who has the freedom to sleep as long as he

wants to, whenever he wants to. I’m talking

about the one that reminds you, “If you don’t

schedule rest, your body will schedule it for

you.” This New Year, treat yourself to rest.

Don’t wait for the flu or norovirus to

force you into bed for 48 hours. Fake a snow

day. Turn off your alarm, pull the blinds,

and spend an hour reading in bed. Skip the

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there and enjoying this island

shower. Don’t shave. Play the board game

someone got you for Christmas. More

importantly, let the kids play with all of their

new things, and forget screen time limits for

the day.

If you’re lucky enough to have an Aunt

Tillie nearby, encourage her to take the kids

bowling, or to see the new SpongeBob movie

playing at Cape Square Entertainment in Rio

Grande. Or, hire the kid across the street to

build Legos with your kids for a few hours.

Eat only leftovers. Open the gift box of fancy

cookies you were saving in case someone

special dropped by — you are someone special.

Talk a walk through your neighborhood

— just a little walk, not the scheduled hike

which requires registration and showing up

at an assigned time, or the march to 15,000

steps someone told you you need, but a leisurely

stroll around your neighborhood. Feel

the sun on your face and stretch your legs.

Appreciate the decorations one last time.

Start a puzzle, or pick up the hobby you

used to enjoy before you told yourself you had

to hand make all the presents. Take a bubble

bath and use all the indulgent face creams

and foot lotions from your stocking — what

are you saving them for? Switch your playlist

from holiday magic to spa sounds and relax.

Honor the superstitions of your choice — I

like the one that says it’s bad luck to clean

on New Year’s Day, lest you sweep away your

good luck.

Happy New Year, everybody! Welcome

2026! Fingers crossed, you have all

been determined to see the best in

the year to come. That could be challenging,

I know this well, but we must

remain vigilantly hopeful. There are a few

filmmakers optimistic about their 2025 movies

getting a Film Independent Spirit Award.

The Oscars are great, but let’s go beyond Hollywood.

The Spirit Awards are focused on

indie films with a budget cap on films under

$30m. I know what you’re asking: “Is a $30m

movie still considered Indie?” Exactly!

Last year‘s Spirit Awards were disappointing

because nominated films had budgets

in the multi-millions. That is not “independent“

film. Last year, Anora won for Best

Feature and the film’s director and lead actor

won as well. Later, Anora would sweep the

Oscars. The film cost $6m to make. The Substance

starring Demi Moore, also nominated

at both events, cost $17m. Budgets like that

may qualify for a Spirit Award nomination,

but they don’t qualify for what I call “inde-

pendent“ film. We only have predictions to

go with here as official nominations have not

been announced. Keke Palmer is getting Spirit

buzz for her performance in One of Them Days.

She plays opposite SZA, and this was a feel

good comedy that really worked. It cost $14m

to make… maybe not so indie but still a lot of

fun.

Sorry, Baby is the front runner. It’s a story

about dealing with trauma and recovery. I

know that doesn’t exactly make you want to

rush off and see it — but it had several beautiful

moments. The sandwich guy scene was

inspired, and the end scene was extremely

well done. The cost to make this film was

reportedly $1.5m. That’s getting a little closer

to independent filmmaking.

There is one nominee hopeful getting a

lot of Spirit buzz (and it would seem that it is

“truly” independent). The movie is called If

I Had Legs, I’d Kick You. Despite having celebs

like Conan O’Brien and Christian Slater, this

movie reportedly was made on a budget of

only $1,500 ( yep, one thousand five hundred)!

Now, that’s indie!

This film depicts the challenges and conflicts

faced by mothers as they work their

hardest to do the best for their kids. There are

some gut wrenching scenes and an ending

that makes you wonder. But it’s because of

its truly low budget, I have to vote on this one

being my favorite.

The Spirit Awards is on YouTube February

15. And chin up — let’s look forward to 2026!
